सञ्जय उवाच॥
Sanjaya said:
हते द्रोणे महेष्वासे तव पुत्रा महारथाः। बभूवुराश्वस्तमुखा विषण्णा गतचेतसः ॥८-२-१॥
After Droṇa, the great archer, was killed, your sons, the mighty warriors, appeared relieved yet dejected and lost their senses.
अवाङ्मुखाः शस्त्रभृतः सर्व एव विशां पते। अप्रेक्षमाणाः शोकार्ता नाभ्यभाषन्परस्परम् ॥८-२-२॥
With their faces downcast and bearing weapons, all the warriors, O lord of men, were so afflicted with grief that they did not look at each other or speak to one another.
तान्दृष्ट्वा व्यथिताकारान्सैन्यानि तव भारत। ऊर्ध्वमेवाभ्यवेक्षन्त दुःखत्रस्तान्यनेकशः ॥८-२-३॥
Upon seeing them, your armies, O Bharata, appeared distressed and looked upwards, filled with numerous fears and sorrows.
शस्त्राण्येषां च राजेन्द्र शोणिताक्तान्यशेषतः। प्राभ्रश्यन्त कराग्रेभ्यो दृष्ट्वा द्रोणं निपातितम् ॥८-२-४॥
O King, seeing Droṇa fallen, the weapons of these warriors, completely smeared with blood, fell from their hands.
तानि बद्धान्यनिष्टानि लम्बमानानि भारत। अदृश्यन्त महाराज नक्षत्राणि यथा दिवि ॥८-२-५॥
O Bharata, those inauspicious things that were bound and hanging were seen by the great king, resembling stars in the sky.
तथार्तं स्तिमितं दृष्ट्वा गतसत्त्वमिव स्थितम्। स्वं बलं तन्महाराज राजा दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत् ॥८-२-६॥
Seeing his army in distress and motionless, as if it had lost its spirit, King Duryodhana spoke to the great king.
भवतां बाहुवीर्यं हि समाश्रित्य मया युधि। पाण्डवेयाः समाहूता युद्धं चेदं प्रवर्तितम् ॥८-२-७॥
Relying on your strength, I summoned the Pandavas to battle, and thus this war began.
तदिदं निहते द्रोणे विषण्णमिव लक्ष्यते। युध्यमानाश्च समरे योधा वध्यन्ति सर्वतः ॥८-२-८॥
"This situation appears as if it is dejected with Droṇa slain. The warriors fighting in the battle are being killed everywhere."
जयो वापि वधो वापि युध्यमानस्य संयुगे। भवेत्किमत्र चित्रं वै युध्यध्वं सर्वतोमुखाः ॥८-२-९॥
Whether it is victory or defeat, for a fighter in battle, what is the wonder here? Indeed, fight facing all directions.
पश्यध्वं च महात्मानं कर्णं वैकर्तनं युधि। प्रचरन्तं महेष्वासं दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्महाबलम् ॥८-२-१०॥
Behold the great-souled Karṇa, son of Vikartana, as he moves in battle, a great archer, mighty with divine weapons.
यस्य वै युधि सन्त्रासात्कुन्तीपुत्रो धनञ्जयः। निवर्तते सदामर्षात्सिंहात्क्षुद्रमृगो यथा ॥८-२-११॥
Indeed, in battle, Dhananjaya, the son of Kunti, retreats out of fear from whom, just as a small animal retreats from a lion, always out of anger.
येन नागायुतप्राणो भीमसेनो महाबलः। मानुषेणैव युद्धेन तामवस्थां प्रवेशितः ॥८-२-१२॥
Bhimasena, who possessed the strength of ten thousand elephants and was greatly powerful, was brought into such a condition by a human through battle.
येन दिव्यास्त्रविच्छूरो मायावी स घटोत्कचः। अमोघया रणे शक्त्या निहतो भैरवं नदन् ॥८-२-१३॥
Ghatotkacha, the heroic and illusionist son of Bhima, known for his divine weapons, was killed in battle by an infallible weapon, roaring in terror.
तस्य दुष्पारवीर्यस्य सत्यसन्धस्य धीमतः। बाह्वोर्द्रविणमक्षय्यमद्य द्रक्ष्यथ संयुगे ॥८-२-१४॥
Today, in battle, you will witness the inexhaustible wealth of the arms of the wise and truthful warrior of immense strength.
द्रोणपुत्रस्य विक्रान्तं राधेयस्यैव चोभयोः। पाण्डुपाञ्चालसैन्येषु द्रक्ष्यथापि महात्मनोः ॥८-२-१५॥
You will witness the bravery of both Drona's son and Karna in the armies of the Pandavas and Panchalas.
सर्व एव भवन्तश्च शूराः प्राज्ञाः कुलोद्गताः। शीलवन्तः कृतास्त्राश्च द्रक्ष्यथाद्य परस्परम् ॥८-२-१६॥
"All of you are indeed heroes, wise, noble-born, virtuous, and skilled in weapons; today you will see each other."
एवमुक्ते महाराज कर्णो वैकर्तनो नृपः। सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैः प्रायुध्यत महाबलः ॥८-२-१७॥
Upon hearing these words, the mighty Karṇa, son of Vikartana, roared loudly like a lion and engaged in battle, O great king.
स सृञ्जयानां सर्वेषां पाञ्चालानां च पश्यताम्। केकयानां विदेहानामकरोत्कदनं महत् ॥८-२-१८॥
He inflicted a great massacre upon all the Sṛñjayas, Pāñcālas, Kekayas, and Videhas, in full view of everyone.
तस्येषुधाराः शतशः प्रादुरासञ्शरासनात्। अग्रे पुङ्खे च संसक्ता यथा भ्रमरपङ्क्तयः ॥८-२-१९॥
His arrows emerged in hundreds from the bow, aligned in front on the feathers like rows of bees.
स पीडयित्वा पाञ्चालान्पाण्डवांश्च तरस्विनः। हत्वा सहस्रशो योधानर्जुनेन निपातितः ॥८-२-२०॥
He oppressed the Panchalas and the mighty Pandavas, and after killing thousands of warriors, he was ultimately slain by Arjuna.
