hate droṇe maheṣvāse tava putrā mahārathāḥ। babhūvurāśvastamukhā viṣaṇṇā gatacētasaḥ ॥8-2-1॥
[हते (hate) - having been killed; द्रोणे (droṇe) - Droṇa; महेष्वासे (maheṣvāse) - great archer; तव (tava) - your; पुत्राः (putrāḥ) - sons; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - great warriors; बभूवुः (babhūvuḥ) - became; आश्वस्तमुखाः (āśvastamukhāḥ) - relieved faces; विषण्णाः (viṣaṇṇāḥ) - dejected; गतचेतसः (gatacētasaḥ) - lost consciousness;]
(With Droṇa, the great archer, having been killed, your sons, the great warriors, became with relieved faces, dejected, and lost consciousness.)
After Droṇa, the great archer, was killed, your sons, the mighty warriors, appeared relieved yet dejected and lost their senses.
अवाङ्मुखाः शस्त्रभृतः सर्व एव विशां पते। अप्रेक्षमाणाः शोकार्ता नाभ्यभाषन्परस्परम् ॥८-२-२॥

(With downcast faces, bearing weapons, all indeed, O lord of men, not looking at each other, afflicted with grief, they did not speak to one another.)
With their faces downcast and bearing weapons, all the warriors, O lord of men, were so afflicted with grief that they did not look at each other or speak to one another.
तान्दृष्ट्वा व्यथिताकारान्सैन्यानि तव भारत। ऊर्ध्वमेवाभ्यवेक्षन्त दुःखत्रस्तान्यनेकशः ॥८-२-३॥
tāndṛṣṭvā vyathitākārānsainyāni tava bhārata। ūrdhvamevābhyavekṣanta duḥkhatrastānyanekaśaḥ ॥8-2-3॥

(Having seen them, your armies, O Bharata, with distressed appearances, looked upwards indeed, numerous and fearful in sorrow.)

शस्त्राण्येषां च राजेन्द्र शोणिताक्तान्यशेषतः। प्राभ्रश्यन्त कराग्रेभ्यो दृष्ट्वा द्रोणं निपातितम् ॥८-२-४॥
śastrāṇyeṣāṃ ca rājendra śoṇitāktānyaśeṣataḥ। prābhraśyanta karāgrebhyo dṛṣṭvā droṇaṃ nipātitam ॥8-2-4॥

(The weapons of these, O king, smeared with blood, completely fell off from the tips of the hands, seeing Droṇa fallen.)

तानि बद्धान्यनिष्टानि लम्बमानानि भारत। अदृश्यन्त महाराज नक्षत्राणि यथा दिवि ॥८-२-५॥
tāni baddhānyaniṣṭāni lambamānāni bhārata। adṛśyanta mahārāja nakṣatrāṇi yathā divi ॥8-2-5॥
[तानि (tāni) - those; बद्धानि (baddhāni) - bound; अनिष्टानि (aniṣṭāni) - inauspicious; लम्बमानानि (lambamānāni) - hanging; भारत (bhārata) - O Bharata; अदृश्यन्त (adṛśyanta) - were seen; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; नक्षत्राणि (nakṣatrāṇi) - stars; यथा (yathā) - as; दिवि (divi) - in the sky;]
(Those bound inauspicious things, hanging, O Bharata, were seen, O great king, like stars in the sky.)

तथार्तं स्तिमितं दृष्ट्वा गतसत्त्वमिव स्थितम्। स्वं बलं तन्महाराज राजा दुर्योधनोऽब्रवीत् ॥८-२-६॥
tathārtaṃ stimitaṃ dṛṣṭvā gatasattvamiva sthitam। svaṃ balaṃ tanmahārāja rājā duryodhano'bravīt ॥8-2-6॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; आर्तं (ārtaṃ) - distressed; स्तिमितं (stimitaṃ) - motionless; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; गत (gata) - gone; सत्त्वम् (sattvam) - vitality; इव (iva) - as if; स्थितम् (sthitam) - standing; स्वम् (svam) - own; बलम् (balam) - army; तत् (tat) - that; महाराज (mahārāja) - great king; राजा (rājā) - king; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Thus, having seen his own army distressed, motionless, standing as if devoid of vitality, King Duryodhana, the great king, said:)

भवतां बाहुवीर्यं हि समाश्रित्य मया युधि। पाण्डवेयाः समाहूता युद्धं चेदं प्रवर्तितम् ॥८-२-७॥
bhavatāṃ bāhuvīryaṃ hi samāśritya mayā yudhi। pāṇḍaveyāḥ samāhūtā yuddhaṃ cedaṃ pravartitam ॥8-2-7॥
[भवतां (bhavatāṃ) - your; बाहुवीर्यं (bāhuvīryaṃ) - arm strength; हि (hi) - indeed; समाश्रित्य (samāśritya) - relying on; मया (mayā) - by me; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; पाण्डवेयाः (pāṇḍaveyāḥ) - the Pandavas; समाहूता (samāhūtā) - were summoned; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - war; च (ca) - and; इदं (idaṃ) - this; प्रवर्तितम् (pravartitam) - was commenced;]
(Relying indeed on your arm strength, by me in battle, the Pandavas were summoned, and this war was commenced.)
Relying on your strength, I summoned the Pandavas to battle, and thus this war began.
तदिदं निहते द्रोणे विषण्णमिव लक्ष्यते। युध्यमानाश्च समरे योधा वध्यन्ति सर्वतः ॥८-२-८॥
tadidaṁ nihate droṇe viṣaṇṇamiva lakṣyate। yudhyamānāśca samare yodhā vadhyanti sarvataḥ ॥8-2-8॥
[तत् (tat) - that; इदं (idaṁ) - this; निहते (nihate) - slain; द्रोणे (droṇe) - Droṇa; विषण्णम् (viṣaṇṇam) - dejected; इव (iva) - as if; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyate) - appears; युध्यमानाः (yudhyamānāḥ) - fighting; च (ca) - and; समरे (samare) - in battle; योधाः (yodhāḥ) - warriors; वध्यन्ति (vadhyanti) - are being killed; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - everywhere;]
(That this appears dejected as if Droṇa is slain. And the warriors fighting in battle are being killed everywhere.)

जयो वापि वधो वापि युध्यमानस्य संयुगे। भवेत्किमत्र चित्रं वै युध्यध्वं सर्वतोमुखाः ॥८-२-९॥
jayo vāpi vadho vāpi yudhyamānasya saṃyuge। bhavetkimatra citraṃ vai yudhyadhvaṃ sarvatomukhāḥ ॥8-2-9॥

पश्यध्वं च महात्मानं कर्णं वैकर्तनं युधि। प्रचरन्तं महेष्वासं दिव्यैरस्त्रैर्महाबलम् ॥८-२-१०॥
paśyadhvaṁ ca mahātmānaṁ karṇaṁ vaikartanaṁ yudhi। pracarantaṁ maheṣvāsaṁ divyairastrairmahābalam ॥8-2-10॥

tasya duṣpāravīryasya satyasandhasya dhīmataḥ। bāhvordraviṇamakṣayyamadya drakṣyatha saṃyuge ॥8-2-14॥

(Today, you will see the inexhaustible wealth of the arms of the wise, truthful, and immensely strong one in battle.)

(All of you are indeed heroes, wise, noble-born, virtuous, and skilled in weapons; today you will see each other.)

एवमुक्ते महाराज कर्णो वैकर्तनो नृपः। सिंहनादं विनद्योच्चैः प्रायुध्यत महाबलः ॥८-२-१७॥

(Thus having been spoken, O great king, Karṇa, the son of Vikartana, the king, having roared like a lion loudly, engaged in battle, mighty.)

स सृञ्जयानां सर्वेषां पाञ्चालानां च पश्यताम्। केकयानां विदेहानामकरोत्कदनं महत् ॥८-२-१८॥
sa sṛñjayānāṃ sarveṣāṃ pāñcālānāṃ ca paśyatām। kekayānāṃ videhānāmakarotkadanaṃ mahat ॥8-2-18॥
[स (sa) - he; सृञ्जयानां (sṛñjayānāṃ) - of the Sṛñjayas; सर्वेषां (sarveṣāṃ) - of all; पाञ्चालानां (pāñcālānāṃ) - of the Pāñcālas; च (ca) - and; पश्यताम् (paśyatām) - of those who were watching; केकयानां (kekayānāṃ) - of the Kekayas; विदेहानाम् (videhānām) - of the Videhas; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; कदनं (kadanaṃ) - slaughter; महत् (mahat) - great;]
(He did a great slaughter of all the Sṛñjayas, Pāñcālas, Kekayas, and Videhas, as they were watching.)
He inflicted a great massacre upon all the Sṛñjayas, Pāñcālas, Kekayas, and Videhas, in full view of everyone.
तस्येषुधाराः शतशः प्रादुरासञ्शरासनात्। अग्रे पुङ्खे च संसक्ता यथा भ्रमरपङ्क्तयः ॥८-२-१९॥
tasyeṣudhārāḥ śataśaḥ prādurāsañśarāsanāt। agre puṅkhe ca saṃsaktā yathā bhramara-paṅktayaḥ ॥8-2-19॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; इषुधाराः (iṣudhārāḥ) - arrows; शतशः (śataśaḥ) - hundreds; प्रादुरासन् (prādurāsan) - appeared; शरासनात् (śarāsanāt) - from the bow; अग्रे (agre) - in front; पुङ्खे (puṅkhe) - on the feathers; च (ca) - and; संसक्ता (saṃsaktā) - attached; यथा (yathā) - like; भ्रमरपङ्क्तयः (bhramara-paṅktayaḥ) - rows of bees;]
