एतच्छ्रुत्वा महाराज धृतराष्ट्रोऽम्बिकासुतः। शोकस्यान्तमपश्यन्वै हतं मत्वा सुयोधनम् ॥ विह्वलः पतितो भूमौ नष्टचेता इव द्विपः ॥८-३-१॥
etacchrutvā mahārāja dhṛtarāṣṭro'mbikāsutaḥ। śokasyāntamapaśyanvai hataṃ matvā suyodhanam ॥ vihvalaḥ patito bhūmau naṣṭacetā iva dvipaḥ ॥8-3-1॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; अम्बिकासुतः (ambikāsutaḥ) - son of Ambika; शोकस्य (śokasya) - of grief; अन्तम् (antam) - end; अपश्यन् (apaśyan) - not seeing; वै (vai) - indeed; हतम् (hatam) - killed; मत्वा (matvā) - thinking; सुयोधनम् (suyodhanam) - Suyodhana; विह्वलः (vihvalaḥ) - overwhelmed; पतितः (patitaḥ) - fallen; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; नष्टचेताः (naṣṭacetāḥ) - unconscious; इव (iva) - like; द्विपः (dvipaḥ) - an elephant;]
(Having heard this, O great king, Dhritarashtra, the son of Ambika, not seeing the end of grief, thinking Suyodhana killed, indeed overwhelmed, fell on the ground unconscious like an elephant.)
Upon hearing this, King Dhritarashtra, the son of Ambika, overwhelmed with grief and thinking that Suyodhana was killed, fell to the ground unconscious, like a stricken elephant.
तस्मिन्निपतिते भूमौ विह्वले राजसत्तमे। आर्तनादो महानासीत्स्त्रीणां भरतसत्तम ॥८-३-२॥
tasminnipatite bhūmau vihvale rājasattame। ārtanādo mahānāsītstrīṇāṃ bharatasattama ॥8-3-2॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; निपतिते (nipatite) - fallen; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; विह्वले (vihvale) - distressed; राजसत्तमे (rājasattame) - the best of kings; आर्तनादः (ārtanādaḥ) - a loud cry; महान् (mahān) - great; आसीत् (āsīt) - there was; स्त्रीणाम् (strīṇām) - of the women; भरतसत्तम (bharatasattama) - O best of the Bharatas;]
(In that fallen, distressed best of kings on the ground, there was a great loud cry of the women, O best of the Bharatas.)
When the best of kings fell to the ground in distress, there arose a great cry from the women, O best of the Bharatas.
स शब्दः पृथिवीं सर्वां पूरयामास सर्वशः। शोकार्णवे महाघोरे निमग्ना भरतस्त्रियः ॥८-३-३॥
sa śabdaḥ pṛthivīṃ sarvāṃ pūrayāmāsa sarvaśaḥ। śokārṇave mahāghore nimagnā bharatastriyaḥ ॥8-3-3॥
[स (sa) - that; शब्दः (śabdaḥ) - sound; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - earth; सर्वां (sarvāṃ) - entire; पूरयामास (pūrayāmāsa) - filled; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - completely; शोकार्णवे (śokārṇave) - in the ocean of sorrow; महाघोरे (mahāghore) - extremely terrible; निमग्ना (nimagnā) - immersed; भरतस्त्रियः (bharatastriyaḥ) - women of Bharata;]
(That sound completely filled the entire earth. The women of Bharata were immersed in the extremely terrible ocean of sorrow.)
The sound reverberated throughout the entire earth, and the women of Bharata were engulfed in a profound and terrible ocean of grief.
राजानं च समासाद्य गान्धारी भरतर्षभ। निःसञ्ज्ञा पतिता भूमौ सर्वाण्यन्तःपुराणि च ॥८-३-४॥
rājānaṃ ca samāsādya gāndhārī bharatarṣabha। niḥsañjñā patitā bhūmau sarvāṇyantaḥpurāṇi ca ॥8-3-4॥
[राजानम् (rājānam) - king; च (ca) - and; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - approaching; गान्धारी (gāndhārī) - Gandhari; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; निःसञ्ज्ञा (niḥsañjñā) - unconscious; पतिता (patitā) - fallen; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; अन्तःपुराणि (antaḥpurāṇi) - inner chambers; च (ca) - and;]
(Approaching the king, Gandhari, O best of the Bharatas, fell unconscious on the ground, along with all the inner chambers.)
Gandhari, upon approaching the king, fell unconscious to the ground, and all the women of the inner chambers followed suit, O best of the Bharatas.
ततस्ताः सञ्जयो राजन्समाश्वासयदातुराः। मुह्यमानाः सुबहुशो मुञ्चन्त्यो वारि नेत्रजम् ॥८-३-५॥
tatastāḥ sañjayo rājansamāśvāsayadāturāḥ। muhyamānāḥ subahuśo muñcantyo vāri netrajam ॥8-3-5॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ताः (tāḥ) - they; सञ्जयः (sañjayaḥ) - Sanjaya; राजन् (rājan) - O King; समाश्वासयत् (samāśvāsayat) - consoled; आतुराः (āturāḥ) - distressed; मुह्यमानाः (muhyamānāḥ) - bewildered; सुबहुशः (subahuśaḥ) - repeatedly; मुञ्चन्त्यः (muñcantyaḥ) - shedding; वारि (vāri) - tears; नेत्रजम् (netrajam) - from the eyes;]
(Then Sanjaya, O King, consoled them who were distressed, bewildered, and repeatedly shedding tears from the eyes.)

समाश्वस्ताः स्त्रियस्तास्तु वेपमाना मुहुर्मुहुः। कदल्य इव वातेन धूयमानाः समन्ततः ॥८-३-६॥
samāśvastāḥ striyastāstu vepamānā muhurmuhuḥ। kadalya iva vātena dhūyamānāḥ samantataḥ ॥8-3-6॥
[समाश्वस्ताः (samāśvastāḥ) - reassured; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; ताः (tāḥ) - those; तु (tu) - but; वेपमाना (vepamānā) - trembling; मुहुर्मुहुः (muhurmuhuḥ) - again and again; कदल्यः (kadalyaḥ) - banana trees; इव (iva) - like; वातेन (vātena) - by the wind; धूयमानाः (dhūyamānāḥ) - being shaken; समन्ततः (samantataḥ) - all around;]
(The reassured women, however, were trembling again and again, like banana trees being shaken by the wind all around.)

राजानं विदुरश्चापि प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम्। आश्वासयामास तदा सिञ्चंस्तोयेन कौरवम् ॥८-३-७॥
rājānaṃ viduraścāpi prajñācakṣuṣamīśvaram। āśvāsayāmāsa tadā siñcaṃstoyena kauravam ॥8-3-7॥
[राजानम् (rājānam) - king; विदुरः (viduraḥ) - Vidura; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; प्रज्ञाचक्षुषम् (prajñācakṣuṣam) - wise-eyed; ईश्वरम् (īśvaram) - lord; आश्वासयामास (āśvāsayāmāsa) - consoled; तदा (tadā) - then; सिञ्चन् (siñcan) - sprinkling; तोयेन (toyena) - with water; कौरवम् (kauravam) - Kaurava;]
(Vidura also consoled the king, the wise-eyed lord, then sprinkling the Kaurava with water.)
Vidura, recognizing the wisdom and authority of the king, consoled him by sprinkling water, a gesture of comfort and respect, upon the Kaurava.
स लब्ध्वा शनकैः सञ्ज्ञां ताश्च दृष्ट्वा स्त्रियो नृप। उन्मत्त इव राजा स स्थितस्तूष्णीं विशां पते ॥८-३-८॥
sa labdhvā śanakaiḥ sañjñāṃ tāśca dṛṣṭvā striyo nṛpa। unmatta iva rājā sa sthitastūṣṇīṃ viśāṃ pate ॥8-3-8॥
[स (sa) - he; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having regained; शनकैः (śanakaiḥ) - slowly; सञ्ज्ञाम् (sañjñām) - consciousness; ताः (tāḥ) - them; च (ca) - and; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - women; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; उन्मत्त (unmatta) - mad; इव (iva) - as if; राजा (rājā) - the king; स (sa) - he; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - stood; तूष्णीम् (tūṣṇīm) - silent; विशाम् (viśām) - of the people; पते (pate) - O lord;]
(He, having slowly regained consciousness and having seen those women, O king, the king stood silent as if mad, O lord of the people.)
Having slowly regained his senses and seeing the women, the king stood silently, appearing as if mad, O lord of the people.
ततो ध्यात्वा चिरं कालं निःश्वसंश्च पुनः पुनः। स्वान्पुत्रान्गर्हयामास बहु मेने च पाण्डवान् ॥८-३-९॥
tato dhyātvā ciraṃ kālaṃ niḥśvasaṃśca punaḥ punaḥ। svānputrāngarhayāmāsa bahu mene ca pāṇḍavān ॥8-3-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ध्यात्वा (dhyātvā) - having meditated; चिरं (ciraṃ) - for a long time; कालं (kālaṃ) - time; निःश्वसंश्च (niḥśvasaṃśca) - and sighing; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; स्वान् (svān) - his own; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; गर्हयामास (garhayāmāsa) - criticized; बहु (bahu) - much; मेने (mene) - considered; च (ca) - and; पाण्डवान् (pāṇḍavān) - the Pandavas;]
(Then, having meditated for a long time and sighing again and again, he criticized his own sons and considered the Pandavas much.)

गर्हयित्वात्मनो बुद्धिं शकुनेः सौबलस्य च। ध्यात्वा च सुचिरं कालं वेपमानो मुहुर्मुहुः ॥८-३-१०॥
garhayi tvātmano buddhiṁ śakuneḥ saubalasya ca। dhyātvā ca suciraṁ kālaṁ vepamāno muhurmuhuḥ ॥8-3-10॥
[गर्हयित्वा (garhayi tvā) - having censured; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - his own; बुद्धिं (buddhiṃ) - intelligence; शकुनेः (śakuneḥ) - of Śakuni; सौबलस्य (saubalasya) - the son of Subala; च (ca) - and; ध्यात्वा (dhyātvā) - having contemplated; च (ca) - and; सुचिरं (suciraṃ) - for a long time; कालं (kālaṃ) - time; वेपमानः (vepamānaḥ) - trembling; मुहुर्मुहुः (muhurmuhuḥ) - again and again;]
(Having censured his own intelligence and that of Śakuni, the son of Subala, and having contemplated for a long time, trembling again and again.)
He censured his own intelligence and that of Śakuni, the son of Subala, and after contemplating for a long time, he trembled repeatedly.
संस्तभ्य च मनो भूयो राजा धैर्यसमन्वितः। पुनर्गावल्गणिं सूतं पर्यपृच्छत सञ्जयम् ॥८-३-११॥
saṁstabhya ca mano bhūyo rājā dhairyasamanvitaḥ। punargāvalgaṇiṁ sūtaṁ paryapṛcchata sañjayam ॥8-3-11॥
[संस्तभ्य (saṁstabhya) - having controlled; च (ca) - and; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; राजा (rājā) - the king; धैर्यसमन्वितः (dhairyasamanvitaḥ) - endowed with patience; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; गावल्गणिम् (gāvalgaṇim) - to Gāvalgaṇi; सूतम् (sūtam) - the charioteer; पर्यपृच्छत (paryapṛcchata) - asked; सञ्जयम् (sañjayam) - Sañjaya;]
(Having controlled his mind again, the king, endowed with patience, asked the charioteer Gāvalgaṇi, Sañjaya.)
The king, having once more steadied his mind and filled with patience, questioned his charioteer, Gāvalgaṇi, who is Sañjaya.
यत्त्वया कथितं वाक्यं श्रुतं सञ्जय तन्मया। कच्चिद्दुर्योधनः सूत न गतो वै यमक्षयम् ॥ ब्रूहि सञ्जय तत्त्वेन पुनरुक्तां कथामिमाम् ॥८-३-१२॥
yattvayā kathitaṃ vākyaṃ śrutaṃ sañjaya tanmayā। kaccidduryodhanaḥ sūta na gato vai yamakṣayam ॥ brūhi sañjaya tattvena punaruktāṃ kathāmimām ॥8-3-12॥
[यत् (yat) - that; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कथितम् (kathitam) - spoken; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - sentence; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya; तत् (tat) - that; मया (mayā) - by me; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; सूत (sūta) - charioteer; न (na) - not; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; वै (vai) - indeed; यमक्षयम् (yamakṣayam) - to the abode of Yama; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - Sanjaya; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - truly; पुनरुक्ताम् (punaruktām) - repeated; कथाम् (kathām) - story; इमाम् (imām) - this;]
(The sentence that was spoken by you, Sanjaya, was heard by me. O charioteer, has Duryodhana not indeed gone to the abode of Yama? Tell me truly, Sanjaya, this repeated story.)
Sanjaya, the words you spoke were heard by me. Has Duryodhana, the charioteer, not gone to the abode of Yama? Please tell me the truth about this repeated story, Sanjaya.
एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीत्सूतो राजानं जनमेजय। हतो वैकर्तनो राजन्सह पुत्रैर्महारथैः ॥ भ्रातृभिश्च महेष्वासैः सूतपुत्रैस्तनुत्यजैः ॥८-३-१३॥
evamukto'bravītsūto rājānaṃ janamejaya। hato vaikartano rājansaha putrairmahārathaiḥ ॥ bhrātṛbhiśca maheṣvāsaiḥ sūtaputraistanutyajaiḥ ॥8-3-13॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; सूतः (sūtaḥ) - the charioteer; राजानम् (rājānam) - to the king; जनमेजय (janamejaya) - Janamejaya; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; वैकर्तनः (vaikartanaḥ) - Karna; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सह (saha) - with; पुत्रैः (putraiḥ) - sons; महारथैः (mahārathaiḥ) - great warriors; भ्रातृभिः (bhrātṛbhiḥ) - by brothers; च (ca) - and; महेष्वासैः (maheṣvāsaiḥ) - by great archers; सूतपुत्रैः (sūtaputraiḥ) - by the sons of the charioteer; तनुत्यजैः (tanutyajaiḥ) - by those who have given up their bodies;]
(Thus spoken, the charioteer said to King Janamejaya: "O king, Karna has been killed along with his sons, the great warriors, by the brothers, the great archers, the sons of the charioteer, and those who have given up their bodies.")
Upon hearing this, the charioteer informed King Janamejaya that Karna, along with his sons and the great warriors, had been slain by the brothers, who were great archers, the sons of the charioteer, and those who had sacrificed their lives.
दुःशासनश्च निहतः पाण्डवेन यशस्विना। पीतं च रुधिरं कोपाद्भीमसेनेन संयुगे ॥८-३-१४॥
duḥśāsanaśca nihataḥ pāṇḍavena yaśasvinā। pītaṃ ca rudhiraṃ kopādbhīmasenena saṃyuge ॥8-3-14॥
[दुःशासनः (duḥśāsanaḥ) - Duhshasana; च (ca) - and; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; पाण्डवेन (pāṇḍavena) - by Pandava; यशस्विना (yaśasvinā) - glorious; पीतं (pītaṃ) - drank; च (ca) - and; रुधिरं (rudhiraṃ) - blood; कोपात् (kopāt) - out of anger; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhimasena; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(Duhshasana was slain by the glorious Pandava, and Bhimasena drank the blood out of anger in battle.)
Duhshasana was killed by the illustrious Pandava, and in his wrath, Bhimasena drank his blood during the battle.
