अथैनं पुनराजघ्ने नवत्या निशितैः शरैः। सर्वमर्माणि सम्प्रेक्ष्य मर्मज्ञो लघुहस्तवत् ॥८-११-२॥

Then, Arjuna, the son of Pandu, skillfully shot thousands of arrows at Ashwatthama, the son of Drona, and let out a mighty roar like a lion.
शरैः शरांस्ततो द्रौणिः संवार्य युधि पाण्डवम्। ललाटेऽभ्यहनद्राजन्नाराचेन स्मयन्निव ॥८-११-५॥

ललाटस्थं ततो बाणं धारयामास पाण्डवः। यथा शृङ्गं वने दृप्तः खड्गो धारयते नृप ॥८-११-६॥
lalāṭasthaṃ tato bāṇaṃ dhārayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ। yathā śṛṅgaṃ vane dṛptaḥ khaḍgo dhārayate nṛpa ॥8-11-6॥

ततो द्रौणिं रणे भीमो यतमानं पराक्रमी। त्रिभिर्विव्याध नाराचैर्ललाटे विस्मयन्निव ॥८-११-७॥

ततः शरशतैर्द्रौणिमर्दयामास पाण्डवः। न चैनं कम्पयामास मातरिश्वेव पर्वतम् ॥८-११-९॥
tataḥ śaraśatairdrauṇimardayāmāsa pāṇḍavaḥ। na cainaṃ kampayāmāsa mātariśveva parvatam ॥8-11-9॥

(Then the Pandava tormented Drona's son with hundreds of arrows. And he did not shake him, like the wind does not shake a mountain.)
Then the Pandava attacked Drona's son with hundreds of arrows, but he remained unmoved, like a mountain stands firm against the wind.
तथैव पाण्डवं युद्धे द्रौणिः शरशतैः शितैः। नाकम्पयत संहृष्टो वार्योघ इव पर्वतम् ॥८-११-१०॥
tathaiva pāṇḍavaṃ yuddhe drauṇiḥ śaraśataiḥ śitaiḥ। nākampayata saṃhṛṣṭo vāryogha iva parvatam ॥8-11-10॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pāṇḍava; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Droṇa's son; शरशतैः (śaraśataiḥ) - with hundreds of arrows; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - sharp; नाकम्पयत (nākampayata) - did not shake; संहृष्टः (saṃhṛṣṭaḥ) - elated; वार्योघः (vāryoghaḥ) - flood of water; इव (iva) - like; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - mountain;]
(In the same way, Droṇa's son, with hundreds of sharp arrows, did not shake the elated Pāṇḍava in battle, like a flood of water does not shake a mountain.)
In the battle, Droṇa's son, despite using hundreds of sharp arrows, could not disturb the confident Pāṇḍava, just as a flood cannot move a mountain.
तावन्योन्यं शरैर्घोरैश्छादयानौ महारथौ। रथचर्यागतौ शूरौ शुशुभाते रणोत्कटौ ॥८-११-११॥
tāvanyonyaṃ śarairghoraiśchādayānau mahārathau। rathacaryāgatau śūrau śuśubhāte raṇotkaṭau ॥8-11-11॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; अन्योन्यं (anyonyaṃ) - each other; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - with arrows; घोरैः (ghoraiḥ) - terrible; छादयानौ (chādayānau) - covering; महारथौ (mahārathau) - great charioteers; रथचर्यागतौ (rathacaryāgatau) - engaged in chariot maneuvers; शूरौ (śūrau) - heroes; शुशुभाते (śuśubhāte) - shone; रणोत्कटौ (raṇotkaṭau) - fierce in battle;]
(Those two great charioteers, covering each other with terrible arrows, engaged in chariot maneuvers, shone as heroes fierce in battle.)
The two great warriors, skilled in chariot warfare, fiercely covered each other with dreadful arrows, shining as valiant heroes in the intense battle.
आदित्याविव संदीप्तौ लोकक्षयकरावुभौ। स्वरश्मिभिरिवान्योन्यं तापयन्तौ शरोत्तमैः ॥८-११-१२॥
ādityāviva sandīptau lokakṣayakarāvubhau। svaraśmibhirivānyonyaṃ tāpayantau śarottamaiḥ ॥8-11-12॥

कृतप्रतिकृते यत्नं कुर्वाणौ च महारणे। कृतप्रतिकृते यत्नं चक्राते तावभीतवत् ॥८-११-१३॥

(Like tigers in battle, those two great warriors roamed, with arrows as fangs, invincible, with drawn bows, fearsome.)

The moon and the sun were completely obscured by the dense barrage of arrows, resembling a sky covered by thick clouds.
प्रकाशौ च मुहूर्तेन तत्रैवास्तामरिंदमौ। विमुक्तौ मेघजालेन शशिसूर्यौ यथा दिवि ॥८-११-१६॥
prakāśau ca muhūrtena tatraivāstām ariṃdamau। vimuktau meghajālena śaśisūryau yathā divi ॥8-11-16॥

(The bright ones and the subduers of enemies were there indeed in a moment, freed from the cloud cover, as the moon and the sun in the sky.)
The bright warriors, known as the subduers of enemies, appeared there instantly, freed from the cloud cover, just like the moon and the sun appear in the sky.
अपसव्यं ततश्चक्रे द्रौणिस्तत्र वृकोदरम्। किरञ्शरशतैरुग्रैर्धाराभिरिव पर्वतम् ॥८-११-१७॥
apasavyaṁ tataścakre drauṇistatra vṛkodaram। kirañśaraśatairugrairdhārābhiriva parvatam ॥8-11-17॥
[अपसव्यम् (apasavyam) - anticlockwise; ततः (tataḥ) - then; चक्रे (cakre) - made; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Drona's son; तत्र (tatra) - there; वृकोदरम् (vṛkodaram) - Vrikodara; किरञ् (kirañ) - showering; शरशतैः (śaraśataiḥ) - with hundreds of arrows; उग्रैः (ugraiḥ) - fierce; धाराभिः (dhārābhiḥ) - with streams; इव (iva) - like; पर्वतम् (parvatam) - a mountain;]
(Then Drona's son made an anticlockwise turn there, showering Vrikodara with hundreds of fierce arrows, like streams on a mountain.)

न तु तन्ममृषे भीमः शत्रोर्विजयलक्षणम्। प्रतिचक्रे च तं राजन्पाण्डवोऽप्यपसव्यतः ॥८-११-१८॥
na tu tanmamṛṣe bhīmaḥ śatrorvijayalakṣaṇam। praticakre ca taṃ rājanpāṇḍavo'pyapasavyataḥ ॥8-11-18॥

(But Bhima did not endure that sign of victory of the enemy. And the Pandava countered him from the left, O king.)
Bhima could not tolerate the enemy's sign of victory. O king, the Pandava also countered him from the left side.
मण्डलानां विभागेषु गतप्रत्यागतेषु च। बभूव तुमुलं युद्धं तयोस्तत्र महामृधे ॥८-११-१९॥
maṇḍalānāṃ vibhāgeṣu gatapratyāgateṣu ca। babhūva tumulaṃ yuddhaṃ tayostatra mahāmṛdhe ॥8-11-19॥

चरित्वा विविधान्मार्गान्मण्डलं स्थानमेव च। शरैः पूर्णायतोत्सृष्टैरन्योन्यमभिजघ्नतुः ॥८-११-२०॥
caritvā vividhānmārgānmaṇḍalaṃ sthānameva ca। śaraiḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭairanyonamabhijaghnatuḥ ॥8-11-20॥

अन्योन्यस्य वधे यत्नं चक्रतुस्तौ महारथौ। ईषतुर्विरथं चैव कर्तुमन्योन्यमाहवे ॥८-११-२१॥
anyonyasya vadhe yatnaṁ cakratus tau mahārathau। īṣatur virathaṁ caiva kartum anyonyam āhave ॥8-11-21॥
