Pancharatra and Core: Karna and Ashwatthama on the Kaurava side battle Bhima and Dhrishtadyumna, as described by Vasudeva to Arjuna.
sañjaya uvāca॥
Sanjaya said:
tvaramāṇaḥ punaḥ kṛṣṇaḥ pārtham abhyavadac chanaiḥ। paśya kauravya rājānam apayātāṃś ca pāṇḍavān ॥8-41-1॥
In a hurry once more, Krishna softly spoke to Arjuna: "Look, O Kuru's descendant, at the king and the Pandavas who are retreating."
karṇaṁ paśya mahāraṅge jvalantamiva pāvakam। asau bhīmo maheṣvāsaḥ saṁnivṛtto raṇaṁ prati ॥8-41-2॥
Behold Karna in the grand arena, shining like a flame. Here is Bhima, the mighty archer, who has returned to the battlefield.
tam ete'nu nivartante dhṛṣṭadyumnapurogamāḥ। pāñcālānāṃ sṛñjayānāṃ pāṇḍavānāṃ ca yanmukham ॥ nivṛttaiśca tathā pārthairbhagnaṃ śatrubalaṃ mahat ॥8-41-3॥
Led by Dhrishtadyumna, these warriors return after the front of the Panchalas, Srinjayas, and Pandavas. The great enemy forces are broken by the returning sons of Pritha.
kauravāndravato hyeṣa karṇo dhārayate'rjuna। antakapratimo vege śakratulyaparākramaḥ ॥8-41-4॥
Karna, with the speed of Yama and valor equal to Indra, holds the fleeing Kauravas against Arjuna.
asau gacchati kauravya drauṇirastrabhr̥tāṃ varaḥ। tameṣa pradrutaḥ saṅkhye dhṛṣṭadyumno mahārathaḥ ॥8-41-5॥
Drona's son, the best among the wielders of weapons, is advancing, O Kauravya. Dhrishtadyumna, the great chariot-warrior, is rushing towards him in the battle.
sarvaṁ vyācaṣṭa durdharṣo vāsudevaḥ kirīṭine। tato rājanprādurāsīnmahāghoro mahāraṇaḥ ॥8-41-6॥
Vasudeva, the invincible, explained everything to Arjuna. Then, O king, a very terrible great battle ensued.
siṃhanādaravāścātra prādurāsansamāgame। ubhayoḥ senayo rājanmṛtyuṃ kṛtvā nivartanam ॥8-41-7॥
In the assembly of both armies, O king, the sounds of lion roars emerged, signifying a retreat from death.
