Pancharatra and Core: After reconciling, obtaining blessings from Yudhishthira, Arjuna and Krishna move towards the battlefield, greeted by auspicious omens.
सञ्जय उवाच॥

इति स्म कृष्णवचनात्प्रत्युच्चार्य युधिष्ठिरम्। बभूव विमनाः पार्थः किञ्चित्कृत्वेव पातकम् ॥८-५०-१॥
iti sma kṛṣṇavacanātpratyuccārya yudhiṣṭhiram। babhūva vimanāḥ pārthaḥ kiñcitkṛtveva pātakam ॥8-50-1॥
[इति (iti) - thus; स्म (sma) - indeed; कृष्णवचनात् (kṛṣṇavacanāt) - from Krishna's words; प्रत्युच्चार्य (pratyuccārya) - having addressed; युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira; बभूव (babhūva) - became; विमनाः (vimanāḥ) - disheartened; पार्थः (pārthaḥ) - Arjuna; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - somewhat; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; इव (iva) - as if; पातकम् (pātakam) - a sin;]
(Thus indeed, having addressed Yudhishthira from Krishna's words, Arjuna became disheartened, as if having committed a sin.)
Upon hearing Krishna's words, Arjuna addressed Yudhishthira and became disheartened, feeling as though he had committed a sin.
ततोऽब्रवीद्वासुदेवः प्रहसन्निव पाण्डवम्। कथं नाम भवेदेतद्यदि त्वं पार्थ धर्मजम् ॥ असिना तीक्ष्णधारेण हन्या धर्मे व्यवस्थितम् ॥८-५०-२॥
tato'bravīd vāsudevaḥ prahasann iva pāṇḍavam। kathaṃ nāma bhaved etad yadi tvaṃ pārtha dharmajam ॥ asinā tīkṣṇadhāreṇa hanyā dharme vyavasthitam ॥8-50-2॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वासुदेवः (vāsudevaḥ) - Vasudeva; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - to Pandava; कथम् (katham) - how; नाम (nāma) - indeed; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; एतत् (etat) - this; यदि (yadi) - if; त्वम् (tvam) - you; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; धर्मजम् (dharmajam) - born of Dharma; असिना (asinā) - with sword; तीक्ष्णधारेण (tīkṣṇadhāreṇa) - sharp-edged; हन्याः (hanyāḥ) - would kill; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; व्यवस्थितम् (vyavasthitam) - situated;]
(Then Vasudeva, smiling as if, said to Pandava: "How indeed would this be if you, O son of Pritha, born of Dharma, would kill with a sharp-edged sword one situated in righteousness?")
Then Vasudeva, with a smile, said to Pandava: "How could it be, O son of Pritha, that you, born of Dharma, would kill someone who is situated in righteousness with a sharp-edged sword?"
त्वमित्युक्त्वैव राजानमेवं कश्मलमाविशः। हत्वा तु नृपतिं पार्थ अकरिष्यः किमुत्तरम् ॥ एवं सुदुर्विदो धर्मो मन्दप्रज्ञैर्विशेषतः ॥८-५०-३॥
tvamityuktvaiva rajanamevaṁ kaśmalamāviśaḥ। hatvā tu nṛpatiṁ pārtha akariṣyaḥ kimuttaram ॥ evaṁ sudurvido dharmo mandaprajñairviśeṣataḥ ॥8-50-3॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; एव (eva) - indeed; राजानम् (rājanam) - king; एवं (evaṁ) - thus; कश्मलम् (kaśmalam) - confusion; आविशः (āviśaḥ) - you enter; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; तु (tu) - but; नृपतिम् (nṛpatim) - king; पार्थ (pārtha) - O son of Pritha; अकरिष्यः (akariṣyaḥ) - you will do; किम् (kim) - what; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - reply; एवं (evaṁ) - thus; सुदुर्विदः (sudurvidaḥ) - very difficult to understand; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; मन्दप्रज्ञैः (mandaprajñaiḥ) - by the dull-witted; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(You, having thus spoken to the king, enter into confusion. Having killed the king, O son of Pritha, what reply will you give? Thus, duty is very difficult to understand, especially by the dull-witted.)
After addressing the king in this manner, you fall into confusion. O son of Pritha, after killing the king, what answer will you provide? Indeed, duty is extremely hard to comprehend, particularly for those who are not sharp-witted.
स भवान्धर्मभीरुत्वाद्ध्रुवमैष्यन्महत्तमः। नरकं घोररूपं च भ्रातुर्ज्येष्ठस्य वै वधात् ॥८-५०-४॥
sa bhavāndharmabhīrutvāddhruvamaiṣyanmahattamaḥ। narakaṃ ghorarūpaṃ ca bhrāturjyeṣṭhasya vai vadhāt ॥8-50-4॥
[स (sa) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - you; धर्मभीरुत्वात् (dharmabhīrutvāt) - due to fear of unrighteousness; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certainly; एष्यन् (aiṣyan) - will go; महत्तमः (mahattamaḥ) - greatest; नरकं (narakaṃ) - hell; घोररूपं (ghorarūpaṃ) - terrible form; च (ca) - and; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of brother; ज्येष्ठस्य (jyeṣṭhasya) - eldest; वै (vai) - indeed; वधात् (vadhāt) - due to killing;]
(He, due to fear of unrighteousness, will certainly go to the greatest and terrible form of hell, indeed due to the killing of the eldest brother.)
You, being afraid of unrighteousness, will certainly go to the greatest and most terrible form of hell because of the killing of your eldest brother.
स त्वं धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठं राजानं धर्मसंहितम्। प्रसादय कुरुश्रेष्ठमेतदत्र मतं मम ॥८-५०-५॥
sa tvaṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ śreṣṭhaṃ rājānaṃ dharmasaṃhitam। prasādaya kuruśreṣṭhametadatra mataṃ mama ॥8-50-5॥

(He, you, the best of the upholders of dharma, the king bound by dharma, please, O best of the Kurus, this here is my opinion.)
"O best of the Kurus, please appease the king, the best among the upholders of dharma, who is bound by dharma. This is my opinion here."
प्रसाद्य भक्त्या राजानं प्रीतं चैव युधिष्ठिरम्। प्रयामस्त्वरिता योद्धुं सूतपुत्ररथं प्रति ॥८-५०-६॥
prasādya bhaktyā rājānaṃ prītaṃ caiva yudhiṣṭhiram। prayāmas tvaritā yoddhuṃ sūtaputrarathaṃ prati ॥8-50-6॥

(Having pleased the king with devotion, and indeed Yudhishthira being pleased, we proceed hurriedly to fight towards the chariot of Karna.)
Having pleased the king with devotion, and with Yudhishthira's approval, we hastily move towards Karna's chariot to engage in battle.
हत्वा सुदुर्जयं कर्णं त्वमद्य निशितैः शरैः। विपुलां प्रीतिमाधत्स्व धर्मपुत्रस्य मानद ॥८-५०-७॥
hatvā sudurjayaṃ karṇaṃ tvamadya niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ। vipulāṃ prītimādhatsva dharmaputrasya mānada ॥8-50-7॥
[हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; सुदुर्जयम् (sudurjayam) - very difficult to conquer; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karṇa; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अद्य (adya) - today; निशितैः (niśitaiḥ) - with sharp; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - arrows; विपुलाम् (vipulām) - great; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - joy; आधत्स्व (ādhatsva) - attain; धर्मपुत्रस्य (dharmaputrasya) - of Yudhishthira; मानद (mānada) - O giver of honor;]
(Having killed the very difficult to conquer Karṇa with sharp arrows today, attain great joy for Yudhishthira, O giver of honor.)
"Today, having slain the formidable Karṇa with your sharp arrows, bring great joy to Yudhishthira, O honor-giver."
एतदत्र महाबाहो प्राप्तकालं मतं मम। एवं कृते कृतं चैव तव कार्यं भविष्यति ॥८-५०-८॥
etadatra mahābāho prāptakālaṃ mataṃ mama। evaṃ kṛte kṛtaṃ caiva tava kāryaṃ bhaviṣyati ॥8-50-8॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; अत्र (atra) - here; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; प्राप्तकालम् (prāptakālam) - appropriate time; मतम् (matam) - opinion; मम (mama) - my; एवम् (evam) - thus; कृते (kṛte) - done; कृतम् (kṛtam) - accomplished; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तव (tava) - your; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - task; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(This here, O mighty-armed one, is my opinion at the appropriate time. Thus, when done, your task will indeed be accomplished.)
"O mighty-armed one, this is my opinion at the right time. If you act accordingly, your task will surely be accomplished."
ततोऽर्जुनो महाराज लज्जया वै समन्वितः। धर्मराजस्य चरणौ प्रपेदे शिरसानघ ॥८-५०-९॥
tato'rjuno mahārāja lajjayā vai samanvitaḥ। dharmarājasya caraṇau prapede śirasānagha ॥8-50-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अर्जुनः (arjunaḥ) - Arjuna; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; लज्जया (lajjayā) - with shame; वै (vai) - indeed; समन्वितः (samanvitaḥ) - filled; धर्मराजस्य (dharmarājasya) - of Dharmaraja; चरणौ (caraṇau) - feet; प्रपेदे (prapede) - approached; शिरसा (śirasā) - with his head; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one;]
(Then Arjuna, O great king, filled with shame, indeed approached the feet of Dharmaraja with his head, O sinless one.)
Then Arjuna, filled with shame, approached Dharmaraja's feet with his head bowed, O sinless king.
उवाच भरतश्रेष्ठ प्रसीदेति पुनः पुनः। क्षमस्व राजन्यत्प्रोक्तं धर्मकामेन भीरुणा ॥८-५०-१०॥
uvāca bharataśreṣṭha prasīdeti punaḥ punaḥ। kṣamasva rājanyatproktaṃ dharmakāmena bhīruṇā ॥8-50-10॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - said; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; प्रसीद (prasīda) - be pleased; इति (iti) - thus; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; क्षमस्व (kṣamasva) - forgive; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यत् (yat) - what; प्रोक्तं (proktaṃ) - spoken; धर्मकामेन (dharmakāmena) - with a desire for righteousness; भीरुणा (bhīruṇā) - by the timid;]
(Said, "O best of the Bharatas, be pleased," again and again. "Forgive, O king, what was spoken by the timid with a desire for righteousness.")
He repeatedly said, "O best of the Bharatas, please be gracious." He asked for forgiveness from the king for the words spoken by the timid one, who was motivated by a desire for righteousness.
पादयोः पतितं दृष्ट्वा धर्मराजो युधिष्ठिरः। धनञ्जयममित्रघ्नं रुदन्तं भरतर्षभ ॥८-५०-११॥
pādayoḥ patitaṃ dṛṣṭvā dharmarājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। dhanañjayamamitraghnaṃ rudantaṃ bharatarṣabha ॥8-50-11॥
[पादयोः (pādayoḥ) - at the feet; पतितं (patitaṃ) - fallen; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmaraja; युधिष्ठिरः (yudhiṣṭhiraḥ) - Yudhishthira; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhananjaya; अमित्रघ्नं (amitraghnaṃ) - foe-slayer; रुदन्तं (rudantaṃ) - weeping; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - bull of the Bharatas;]
(Seeing Yudhishthira, the Dharmaraja, fallen at the feet, the foe-slayer Dhananjaya, the bull of the Bharatas, was weeping.)
Upon seeing Yudhishthira, the righteous king, fallen at the feet, Arjuna, the mighty warrior and protector of the Bharatas, began to weep.
उत्थाप्य भ्रातरं राजा धर्मराजो धनञ्जयम्। समाश्लिष्य च सस्नेहं प्ररुरोद महीपतिः ॥८-५०-१२॥
utthāpya bhrātaraṃ rājā dharmarājo dhanañjayam। samāśliṣya ca sasnehaṃ praruroda mahīpatiḥ ॥8-50-12॥
[उत्थाप्य (utthāpya) - having lifted; भ्रातरं (bhrātaraṃ) - brother; राजा (rājā) - king; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmaraja; धनञ्जयम् (dhanañjayam) - Dhananjaya; समाश्लिष्य (samāśliṣya) - having embraced; च (ca) - and; सस्नेहम् (sasneham) - with affection; प्ररुरोद (praruroda) - cried; महीपतिः (mahīpatiḥ) - the king;]
(Having lifted his brother, King Dharmaraja embraced Dhananjaya with affection and cried.)
King Dharmaraja, after lifting his brother Dhananjaya, embraced him with affection and wept.
रुदित्वा तु चिरं कालं भ्रातरौ सुमहाद्युती। कृतशौचौ नरव्याघ्रौ प्रीतिमन्तौ बभूवतुः ॥८-५०-१३॥
ruditvā tu ciraṃ kālaṃ bhrātarau sumahādyutī। kṛtaśaucau naravyāghrau prītimantau babhūvatuḥ ॥8-50-13॥
[रुदित्वा (ruditvā) - having cried; तु (tu) - but; चिरं (ciraṃ) - for a long time; कालं (kālaṃ) - time; भ्रातरौ (bhrātarau) - the two brothers; सुमहाद्युती (sumahādyutī) - of great splendor; कृतशौचौ (kṛtaśaucau) - having performed ablutions; नरव्याघ्रौ (naravyāghrau) - tiger among men; प्रीतिमन्तौ (prītimantau) - affectionate; बभूवतुः (babhūvatuḥ) - became;]
(Having cried for a long time, the two brothers of great splendor, having performed ablutions, became affectionate tigers among men.)
After crying for a long time, the two illustrious brothers, having cleansed themselves, became affectionate and were like tigers among men.
तत आश्लिष्य स प्रेम्णा मूर्ध्नि चाघ्राय पाण्डवम्। प्रीत्या परमया युक्तः प्रस्मयंश्चाब्रवीज्जयम् ॥८-५०-१४॥
tata āśliṣya sa premṇā mūrdhni cāghrāya pāṇḍavam। prītyā paramayā yuktaḥ prasmayaṃścābravījjayam ॥8-50-14॥
[तत (tata) - then; आश्लिष्य (āśliṣya) - embracing; स (sa) - he; प्रेम्णा (premṇā) - with love; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; च (ca) - and; अघ्राय (aghrāya) - smelling; पाण्डवम् (pāṇḍavam) - Pāṇḍava; प्रीत्या (prītyā) - with affection; परमया (paramayā) - supreme; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; प्रस्मयन् (prasmayan) - smiling; च (ca) - and; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; जयम् (jayam) - victory;]
(Then, embracing him with love, and smelling the head of Pāṇḍava, endowed with supreme affection, smiling, he said 'Victory'.)
Then, with great affection, he embraced Pāṇḍava, kissed his head, and with a smile, said 'Victory'.
कर्णेन मे महाबाहो सर्वसैन्यस्य पश्यतः। कवचं च ध्वजश्चैव धनुः शक्तिर्हया गदा ॥ शरैः कृत्ता महेष्वास यतमानस्य संयुगे ॥८-५०-१५॥
karṇena me mahābāho sarvasainyasya paśyataḥ। kavacaṃ ca dhvajaścaiva dhanuḥ śaktirhayā gadā ॥ śaraiḥ kṛttā maheṣvāsa yatamānasya saṃyuge ॥8-50-15॥
[कर्णेन (karṇena) - by Karna; मे (me) - my; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed one; सर्वसैन्यस्य (sarvasainyasya) - of the entire army; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while watching; कवचं (kavacaṃ) - armor; च (ca) - and; ध्वजः (dhvajaḥ) - flag; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; धनुः (dhanuḥ) - bow; शक्तिः (śaktiḥ) - spear; हयाः (hayāḥ) - horses; गदा (gadā) - mace; शरैः (śaraiḥ) - by arrows; कृत्ता (kṛttā) - cut; महेष्वास (maheṣvāsa) - O great archer; यतमानस्य (yatamānasya) - of the one striving; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(By Karna, my armor, flag, bow, spear, horses, and mace were cut by arrows while the entire army was watching, O mighty-armed one, O great archer, in battle, of the one striving.)
O mighty-armed one, while the entire army was watching, Karna cut my armor, flag, bow, spear, horses, and mace with arrows in the battle, O great archer, as I was striving.
सोऽहं ज्ञात्वा रणे तस्य कर्म दृष्ट्वा च फल्गुन। व्यवसीदामि दुःखेन न च मे जीवितं प्रियम् ॥८-५०-१६॥
so'haṁ jñātvā raṇe tasya karma dṛṣṭvā ca phalguna। vyavasīdāmi duḥkhena na ca me jīvitaṁ priyam ॥8-50-16॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; तस्य (tasya) - his; कर्म (karma) - action; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; च (ca) - and; फल्गुन (phalguna) - Arjuna; व्यवसीदामि (vyavasīdāmi) - I am despondent; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - with sorrow; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; मे (me) - my; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life; प्रियम् (priyam) - dear;]
(He, having known and seen Arjuna's action in battle, I am despondent with sorrow, and my life is not dear to me.)
Having witnessed Arjuna's actions in the battle, I am filled with sorrow and despair, and life no longer holds any value for me.
तमद्य यदि वै वीर न हनिष्यसि सूतजम्। प्राणानेव परित्यक्ष्ये जीवितार्थो हि को मम ॥८-५०-१७॥
tam adya yadi vai vīra na haniṣyasi sūtajam। prāṇān eva parityakṣye jīvitārtho hi ko mama ॥8-50-17॥
[तम् (tam) - that; अद्य (adya) - today; यदि (yadi) - if; वै (vai) - indeed; वीर (vīra) - hero; न (na) - not; हनिष्यसि (haniṣyasi) - you will kill; सूतजम् (sūtajam) - son of a charioteer; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life; एव (eva) - only; परित्यक्ष्ये (parityakṣye) - I will abandon; जीवितार्थः (jīvitārthaḥ) - for the sake of life; हि (hi) - indeed; कः (kaḥ) - who; मम (mama) - my;]
(That today, if indeed, O hero, you will not kill the son of a charioteer, I will abandon my life, for who is my sake of life indeed?)
"Today, if you do not kill the son of a charioteer, O hero, I will abandon my life, for what is the purpose of my life indeed?"
एवमुक्तः प्रत्युवाच विजयो भरतर्षभ। सत्येन ते शपे राजन्प्रसादेन तवैव च ॥ भीमेन च नरश्रेष्ठ यमाभ्यां च महीपते ॥८-५०-१८॥
evamuktaḥ pratyuvāca vijayo bharatarṣabha। satyena te śape rājanprasādena tavaiva ca ॥ bhīmena ca naraśreṣṭha yamābhyāṃ ca mahīpate ॥8-50-18॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - spoken; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - Vijaya; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; ते (te) - to you; शपे (śape) - I swear; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रसादेन (prasādena) - by grace; तव (tava) - your; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; भीमेन (bhīmena) - by Bhima; च (ca) - and; नरश्रेष्ठ (naraśreṣṭha) - O best of men; यमाभ्याम् (yamābhyām) - by the two Yamas; च (ca) - and; महीपते (mahīpate) - O lord of the earth;]
(Thus spoken, Vijaya replied, "O best of the Bharatas, I swear to you by truth, by your grace, and by Bhima, O best of men, and by the two Yamas, O lord of the earth.")
Upon being addressed thus, Vijaya responded, "O esteemed descendant of Bharata, I pledge to you truthfully, by your favor, and by Bhima, the foremost of men, as well as by the two Yamas, O sovereign of the land."
यथाद्य समरे कर्णं हनिष्यामि हतोऽथ वा। महीतले पतिष्यामि सत्येनायुधमालभे ॥८-५०-१९॥
yathādya samare karṇaṃ haniṣyāmi hato'tha vā। mahītale patiṣyāmi satyenāyudhamālabhe ॥8-50-19॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; अद्य (adya) - today; समरे (samare) - in battle; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karṇa; हनिष्यामि (haniṣyāmi) - I shall slay; हतः (hataḥ) - slain; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; महीतले (mahītale) - on the ground; पतिष्यामि (patiṣyāmi) - I shall fall; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; आयुधम् (āyudham) - weapon; आलभे (ālabhe) - I take;]
(As today in battle I shall slay Karṇa, or if slain, I shall fall on the ground; by truth, I take up the weapon.)
"Today, I vow to either slay Karṇa in battle or fall on the ground if I am slain. By truth, I take up my weapon."
एवमाभाष्य राजानमब्रवीन्माधवं वचः। अद्य कर्णं रणे कृष्ण सूदयिष्ये न संशयः ॥ तदनुध्याहि भद्रं ते वधं तस्य दुरात्मनः ॥८-५०-२०॥
evam ābhāṣya rājānam abravīn mādhavaṃ vacaḥ। adya karṇaṃ raṇe kṛṣṇa sūdayiṣye na saṃśayaḥ॥ tad anudhyāhi bhadraṃ te vadhaṃ tasya durātmanaḥ॥ 8-50-20॥

(Thus, having addressed the king, he said to Mādhava: "Today, O Kṛṣṇa, I will slay Karṇa in battle, no doubt." Consider that, good for you, the killing of that wicked soul.)
Having spoken thus to the king, he addressed Mādhava: "Today, O Kṛṣṇa, I will surely kill Karṇa in battle, without a doubt." Reflect on this, as it is beneficial for you, the destruction of that wicked soul.
एवमुक्तोऽब्रवीत्पार्थं केशवो राजसत्तम। शक्तोऽस्मि भरतश्रेष्ठ यत्नं कर्तुं यथाबलम् ॥८-५०-२१॥

(Thus spoken, Krishna said to Arjuna, O best of kings, I am capable, O best of the Bharatas, to make an effort according to ability.)
Having been addressed in this way, Krishna said to Arjuna, "O best of kings, I am indeed capable, O best of the Bharatas, of making an effort to the best of my ability."
एवं चापि हि मे कामो नित्यमेव महारथ। कथं भवान्रणे कर्णं निहन्यादिति मे मतिः ॥८-५०-२२॥
evaṃ cāpi hi me kāmo nityameva mahāratha। kathaṃ bhavānraṇe karṇaṃ nihanyāditi me matiḥ ॥8-50-22॥

(Thus, indeed, my desire always, certainly, O great chariot-warrior, is how you could slay Karna in battle, thus is my thought.)
Thus, my constant desire, O great chariot-warrior, is to know how you could slay Karna in battle; this is my belief.
भूयश्चोवाच मतिमान्माधवो धर्मनन्दनम्। युधिष्ठिरेमं बीभत्सुं त्वं सान्त्वयितुमर्हसि ॥ अनुज्ञातुं च कर्णस्य वधायाद्य दुरात्मनः ॥८-५०-२३॥
bhūyaścovāca matimānmādhavo dharmanandanam। yudhiṣṭhiremaṃ bībhatsuṃ tvaṃ sāntvayitumarhasi ॥ anujñātuṃ ca karṇasya vadhāyādya durātmanaḥ ॥8-50-23॥

(Again, the wise Madhava said to Dharmanandana: "You ought to console this Bibhatsu, and permit the killing of the wicked Karna today.")
Once more, the wise Madhava addressed Dharmanandana, urging him to console Bibhatsu and to give permission for the slaying of the wicked Karna today.
श्रुत्वा ह्ययमहं चैव त्वां कर्णशरपीडितम्। प्रवृत्तिं ज्ञातुमायाताविह पाण्डवनन्दन ॥८-५०-२४॥
śrutvā hyayamahaṃ caiva tvāṃ karṇaśarapīḍitam। pravṛttiṃ jñātumāyātāviha pāṇḍavanandana ॥8-50-24॥

(Having heard indeed this, I certainly have come here to know the news of you afflicted by Karna's arrow, O son of Pandava.)

दिष्ट्यासि राजन्निरुजो दिष्ट्या न ग्रहणं गतः। परिसान्त्वय बीभत्सुं जयमाशाधि चानघ ॥८-५०-२५॥

(By fortune, O king, you are free from disease; by fortune, you have not gone into captivity. Console Bibhatsu (Arjuna) and achieve victory, O sinless one.)
"By good fortune, O king, you are healthy and have not been captured. Console Arjuna and secure victory, O sinless one."

अहं त्वामनुजानामि जहि कर्णं धनञ्जय। मन्युं च मा कृथाः पार्थ यन्मयोक्तोऽसि दारुणम् ॥८-५०-२७॥

I allow you, Arjuna, to slay Karṇa. Do not harbor anger, dear Partha, for my words have been severe.

(Then Dhananjaya (Arjuna), O king, bowed with his head and took the feet of his elder brother with his hands, O venerable one.)
Then Dhananjaya (Arjuna), with respect and humility, bowed down and touched the feet of his elder brother, showing reverence and honor.
समुत्थाप्य ततो राजा परिष्वज्य च पीडितम्। मूर्ध्न्युपाघ्राय चैवैनमिदं पुनरुवाच ह ॥८-५०-२९॥
samutthāpya tato rājā pariṣvajya ca pīḍitam। mūrdhnyupāghrāya caivainamidaṃ punaruvāca ha ॥8-50-29॥

(Having lifted him, then the king embraced the afflicted one, smelled his head, and indeed said this again.)
The king, after lifting and embracing the afflicted one, smelled his head and spoke to him again.
धनञ्जय महाबाहो मानितोऽस्मि दृढं त्वया। माहात्म्यं विजयं चैव भूयः प्राप्नुहि शाश्वतम् ॥८-५०-३०॥
dhanañjaya mahābāho mānito'smi dṛḍhaṃ tvayā। māhātmyaṃ vijayaṃ caiva bhūyaḥ prāpnuhi śāśvatam ॥8-50-30॥

येन त्वं पीडितो बाणैर्दृढमायम्य कार्मुकम्। तस्याद्य कर्मणः कर्णः फलं प्राप्स्यति दारुणम् ॥८-५०-३२॥
yena tvaṁ pīḍito bāṇairdṛḍhamāyamya kārmukam। tasyādya karmaṇaḥ karṇaḥ phalaṁ prāpsyati dāruṇam ॥8-50-32॥

(By whom you were afflicted with arrows, having firmly drawn the bow, today Karṇa will obtain the terrible fruit of that action.)

अद्य त्वामहमेष्यामि कर्णं हत्वा महीपते। सभाजयितुमाक्रन्दादिति सत्यं ब्रवीमि ते ॥८-५०-३३॥

नाहत्वा विनिवर्तेऽहं कर्णमद्य रणाजिरात्। इति सत्येन ते पादौ स्पृशामि जगतीपते ॥८-५०-३४॥

Arjuna, having pleased Dharmaraja and filled with inner joy, spoke to Govinda, ready to kill Karna.
कल्प्यतां च रथो भूयो युज्यन्तां च हयोत्तमाः। आयुधानि च सर्वाणि सज्ज्यन्तां वै महारथे ॥८-५०-३६॥
kalpyatāṃ ca ratho bhūyo yujyantāṃ ca hayottamāḥ। āyudhāni ca sarvāṇi sajjyantāṃ vai mahārathe ॥8-50-36॥
[कल्प्यतां (kalpyatāṃ) - let it be prepared; च (ca) - and; रथः (rathaḥ) - chariot; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; युज्यन्तां (yujyantāṃ) - let them be yoked; च (ca) - and; हय-उत्तमाः (haya-uttamāḥ) - excellent horses; आयुधानि (āyudhāni) - weapons; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; सज्ज्यन्तां (sajjyantāṃ) - let them be prepared; वै (vai) - indeed; महा-रथे (mahā-rathe) - for the great chariot;]
(Let the chariot be prepared again, and let the excellent horses be yoked. Let all the weapons indeed be prepared for the great chariot.)
"Let the chariot be prepared again, and let the best horses be yoked. Indeed, let all the weapons be made ready for the great chariot."
उपावृत्ताश्च तुरगाः शिक्षिताश्चाश्वसादिनः। रथोपकरणैः सर्वैरुपायान्तु त्वरान्विताः ॥८-५०-३७॥
upāvṛttāśca turagāḥ śikṣitāścāśvasādinaḥ। rathopakaraṇaiḥ sarvairupāyāntu tvarānvitāḥ ॥8-50-37॥
[उपावृत्ताः (upāvṛttāḥ) - turned back; च (ca) - and; तुरगाः (turagāḥ) - horses; शिक्षिताः (śikṣitāḥ) - trained; च (ca) - and; अश्वसादिनः (aśvasādinaḥ) - horse riders; रथोपकरणैः (rathopakaraṇaiḥ) - with chariot equipment; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; उपायान्तु (upāyāntu) - should come; त्वरान्विताः (tvarānvitāḥ) - with speed;]
(The turned back horses and trained horse riders should come with all chariot equipment with speed.)
The horses that have turned back and the trained horse riders should come quickly with all the chariot equipment.
एवमुक्ते महाराज फल्गुनेन महात्मना। उवाच दारुकं कृष्णः कुरु सर्वं यथाब्रवीत् ॥ अर्जुनो भरतश्रेष्ठः श्रेष्ठः सर्वधनुष्मताम् ॥८-५०-३८॥

(Thus, O great king, having been spoken by the great soul Phalguna, Krishna said to Daruka, "Do everything as Arjuna, the best of the Bharatas, the best of all bowmen, spoke:")
Upon hearing the words of the great soul Phalguna, O great king, Krishna instructed Daruka to act according to the instructions given by Arjuna, the foremost of the Bharatas and the finest among all archers.
आज्ञप्तस्त्वथ कृष्णेन दारुको राजसत्तम। योजयामास स रथं वैयाघ्रं शत्रुतापनम् ॥८-५०-३९॥
