एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं तदाचक्ष्व द्विजोत्तम। न हि तृप्यामि पूर्वेषां शृण्वानश्चरितं महत् ॥९-१-३॥

ततः कर्णे हते राजन्धार्तराष्ट्रः सुयोधनः। भृशं शोकार्णवे मग्नो निराशः सर्वतोऽभवत् ॥९-१-४॥
tataḥ karṇe hate rājan dhārtarāṣṭraḥ suyodhanaḥ। bhṛśaṃ śokārṇave magno nirāśaḥ sarvato'bhavat ॥9-1-4॥

(Then, when Karna was slain, O king, the son of Dhritarashtra, Suyodhana, became greatly submerged in the ocean of sorrow, completely despondent.)

हा कर्ण हा कर्ण इति शोचमानः पुनः पुनः। कृच्छ्रात्स्वशिबिरं प्रायाद्धतशेषैर्नृपैः सह ॥९-१-५॥

(Alas Karna, alas Karna, thus lamenting again and again, with difficulty went to his camp with the remaining kings.)
Lamenting repeatedly, "Alas, Karna! Alas, Karna!", he returned to his camp with the surviving kings, with great difficulty.
स समाश्वास्यमानोऽपि हेतुभिः शास्त्रनिश्चितैः। राजभिर्नालभच्छर्म सूतपुत्रवधं स्मरन् ॥९-१-६॥
sa samāśvāsyamāno'pi hetubhiḥ śāstraniścitaiḥ। rājabhirnālabhaccharma sūtaputravadhaṃ smaran ॥9-1-6॥

स दैवं बलवन्मत्वा भवितव्यं च पार्थिवः। सङ्ग्रामे निश्चयं कृत्वा पुनर्युद्धाय निर्ययौ ॥९-१-७॥
sa daivaṁ balavanmatvā bhavitavyaṁ ca pārthivaḥ। saṅgrāme niścayaṁ kṛtvā punaryuddhāya niryayau ॥9-1-7॥

(He, considering fate as powerful and destined, the prince, having made determination in battle, went out again for battle.)
The prince, acknowledging the power of fate and destiny, resolved himself in battle and went out once more to fight.
शल्यं सेनापतिं कृत्वा विधिवद्राजपुङ्गवः। रणाय निर्ययौ राजा हतशेषैर्नृपैः सह ॥९-१-८॥
śalyaṃ senāpatiṃ kṛtvā vidhivad rājapuṅgavaḥ। raṇāya niryayau rājā hataśeṣair nṛpaiḥ saha ॥9-1-8॥

ततः सुतुमुलं युद्धं कुरुपाण्डवसेनयोः। बभूव भरतश्रेष्ठ देवासुररणोपमम् ॥९-१-९॥

ततः शल्यो महाराज कृत्वा कदनमाहवे। पाण्डुसैन्यस्य मध्याह्ने धर्मराजेन पातितः ॥९-१-१०॥
tataḥ śalyo mahārāja kṛtvā kadanamāhave। pāṇḍusainyasya madhyāhne dharmarājena pātitaḥ ॥9-1-10॥

तस्मिन्हते महेष्वासे हतशिष्टास्त्रयो रथाः। संरभान्निशि राजेन्द्र जघ्नुः पाञ्चालसैनिकान् ॥९-१-१३॥
tasminhate maheṣvāse hataśiṣṭāstrayo rathāḥ। saṁrabhānniśi rājendra jaghnuḥ pāñcālasainikān ॥9-1-13॥

(In that, the great archer having been killed, the three chariots remaining after being killed, with enthusiasm at night, O king, killed the Panchala soldiers.)

ततः पूर्वाह्णसमये शिबिरादेत्य सञ्जयः। प्रविवेश पुरीं दीनो दुःखशोकसमन्वितः ॥९-१-१४॥
tataḥ pūrvāhṇasamaye śibirād etya sañjayaḥ। praviveśa purīṃ dīno duḥkhaśokasamanvitaḥ ॥9-1-14॥

आकुमारं नरव्याघ्र तत्पुरं वै समन्ततः। आर्तनादं महच्चक्रे श्रुत्वा विनिहतं नृपम् ॥९-१-१९॥

(O tiger among men, having heard that the prince was slain, indeed a great loud wail was made all around that city.)

धावतश्चाप्यपश्यच्च तत्र त्रीन्पुरुषर्षभान्। नष्टचित्तानिवोन्मत्ताञ्शोकेन भृशपीडितान् ॥९-१-२०॥
dhāvataś cāpy apaśyac ca tatra trīn puruṣarṣabhān। naṣṭacittān ivonmattāñ śokena bhṛśapīḍitān ॥9-1-20॥

(Running and also saw there three bulls among men, as if lost-minded, mad, severely afflicted by grief.)
He saw three great men running there, appearing as if they had lost their minds, maddened and severely afflicted by grief.
तथा स विह्वलः सूतः प्रविश्य नृपतिक्षयम्। ददर्श नृपतिश्रेष्ठं प्रज्ञाचक्षुषमीश्वरम् ॥९-१-२१॥
tathā sa vihvalaḥ sūtaḥ praviśya nṛpatikṣayam। dadarśa nṛpatiśreṣṭhaṃ prajñācakṣuṣamīśvaram ॥9-1-21॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; सः (saḥ) - he; विह्वलः (vihvalaḥ) - agitated; सूतः (sūtaḥ) - charioteer; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - entering; नृपतिक्षयम् (nṛpatikṣayam) - king's abode; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; नृपतिश्रेष्ठम् (nṛpatiśreṣṭham) - best of kings; प्रज्ञाचक्षुषम् (prajñācakṣuṣam) - wise-eyed; ईश्वरम् (īśvaram) - lord;]
(Thus, the agitated charioteer, entering the king's abode, saw the best of kings, the wise-eyed lord.)
In this manner, the distressed charioteer entered the palace and saw the greatest of kings, the lord with the eyes of wisdom.
दृष्ट्वा चासीनमनघं समन्तात्परिवारितम्। स्नुषाभिर्भरतश्रेष्ठ गान्धार्या विदुरेण च ॥९-१-२२॥

विद्वन्क्षत्तर्महाप्राज्ञ त्वं गतिर्भरतर्षभ। ममानाथस्य सुभृशं पुत्रैर्हीनस्य सर्वशः ॥ एवमुक्त्वा ततो भूयो विसञ्ज्ञो निपपात ह ॥९-१-४३॥
vidvaṅkṣattarmahāprājña tvaṃ gatirbharatarṣabha। mamānāthasya subhṛśaṃ putrairhīnasya sarvaśaḥ ॥ evamuktvā tato bhūyo visañjño nipapāta ha ॥9-1-43॥

(O learned charioteer, O wise one, you are the refuge, O best of the Bharatas, of my completely helpless self, greatly bereft of sons. Having thus spoken, then again he fell down unconscious.)
The learned charioteer, addressed as the wise one and the best of the Bharatas, is the refuge for the speaker who is completely helpless and greatly bereft of sons. After saying this, the speaker once again fell unconscious.
तं तथा पतितं दृष्ट्वा बान्धवा येऽस्य केचन। शीतैस्तु सिषिचुस्तोयैर्विव्यजुर्व्यजनैरपि ॥९-१-४४॥
taṁ tathā patitaṁ dṛṣṭvā bāndhavā ye'sya kecana। śītaistu siṣicusto yairvivyajurvyajanairapi ॥9-1-44॥

(But he, the king, reassured by long time, silently pondered, afflicted by son's distress, sighing like a crooked one thrown into a jar, O lord of men.)
The king, though reassured over time, remained silent and pondered deeply, troubled by his son's plight, sighing as if he were a crooked figure trapped in a jar, O lord of men.
सञ्जयोऽप्यरुदत्तत्र दृष्ट्वा राजानमातुरम्। तथा सर्वाः स्त्रियश्चैव गान्धारी च यशस्विनी ॥९-१-४६॥
sañjayo'pyarudattatra dṛṣṭvā rājānamāturam। tathā sarvāḥ striyaścaiva gāndhārī ca yaśasvinī ॥9-1-46॥

(Then, seeing the king there, who had regained consciousness, the scorcher of foes, Sanjaya, distressed and crying, was greatly afflicted.)
