सुषेणोऽरिष्टसेनश्च धृतसेनश्च वीर्यवान्। जयत्सेनश्च राजानस्ते रात्रिमुषितास्ततः ॥९-५-३॥

(That unmatched in deeds, unequaled in form on earth, master of all knowledge, ocean of virtues, blameless, him approaching, the son said to you, Ashwatthama.)

(Whom placing in front, together in battle we will conquer the Pandavas. The teacher's son today is the supreme refuge of all of us. Therefore, by your order, who should be my general?)

(Having abandoned his own nephews, the grateful Mahasena, mighty-armed, approached us like another Mahasena.)

(Having made this one the general, O best of kings, it is possible for us to obtain victory like the unconquered Skanda by the gods.)
By appointing him as the general, O noble king, we can achieve victory like the invincible Skanda, with the help of the gods.
तथोक्ते द्रोणपुत्रेण सर्व एव नराधिपाः। परिवार्य स्थिताः शल्यं जयशब्दांश्च चक्रिरे ॥ युद्धाय च मतिं चक्रूरावेशं च परं ययुः ॥९-५-२१॥
tathokte droṇaputreṇa sarva eva narādhipāḥ। parivārya sthitāḥ śalyaṃ jayaśabdāṃśca cakrire ॥ yuddhāya ca matiṃ cakrūrāveśaṃ ca paraṃ yayuḥ ॥9-5-21॥

(Thus spoken by the son of Droṇa, all the kings, surrounding Śalya, stood and made victory cries. They made up their minds for battle and went with great enthusiasm.)
Upon hearing the words of Droṇa's son, all the kings gathered around Śalya, raising cries of victory. They prepared themselves for battle, filled with great enthusiasm and determination.

(Then Duryodhana, standing on the ground, addressed Shalya, who was standing on the chariot, with folded hands, becoming equal to Rama and Bhishma in battle.)

(This is the time arrived for friends, O lover of friends, where wise people test whether one is a friend or a non-friend.)

स भवानस्तु नः शूरः प्रणेता वाहिनीमुखे। रणं च याते भवति पाण्डवा मन्दचेतसः ॥ भविष्यन्ति सहामात्याः पाञ्चालाश्च निरुद्यमाः ॥९-५-२४॥
sa bhavānastu naḥ śūraḥ praṇetā vāhinīmukhe। raṇaṃ ca yāte bhavati pāṇḍavā mandacētasaḥ ॥ bhaviṣyanti sahāmātyāḥ pāñcālāśca nirudyamāḥ ॥9-5-24॥
[स (sa) - he; भवान् (bhavān) - you; अस्तु (astu) - may be; नः (naḥ) - our; शूरः (śūraḥ) - hero; प्रणेता (praṇetā) - leader; वाहिनीमुखे (vāhinīmukhe) - at the front of the army; रणं (raṇam) - battle; च (ca) - and; याते (yāte) - when goes; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - Pāṇḍavas; मन्दचेतसः (mandacētasaḥ) - dull-minded; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; सहामात्याः (sahāmātyāḥ) - with ministers; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - Pāñcālas; च (ca) - and; निरुद्यमाः (nirudyamāḥ) - inactive;]
(He, you may be our hero, leader at the front of the army. When the battle goes on, the Pāṇḍavas become dull-minded. The Pāñcālas and their ministers will become inactive.)
"You should be our hero and leader at the front of the army. When the battle ensues, the Pāṇḍavas will become dull-minded, and the Pāñcālas along with their ministers will become inactive."

यत्तु मां मन्यसे राजन्कुरुराज करोमि तत्। त्वत्प्रियार्थं हि मे सर्वं प्राणा राज्यं धनानि च ॥९-५-२५॥
yattu māṁ manyase rājan kururāja karomi tat। tvatpriyārthaṁ hi me sarvaṁ prāṇā rājyaṁ dhanāni ca ॥9-5-25॥
[यत् (yat) - that; तु (tu) - but; माम् (mām) - me; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कुरुराज (kururāja) - Kuru king; करोमि (karomi) - I do; तत् (tat) - that; त्वत् (tvat) - your; प्रियार्थम् (priyārtham) - for the sake of pleasing; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - my; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - life; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; धनानि (dhanāni) - wealth; च (ca) - and;]
(But what you think of me, O king, Kuru king, I do that for the sake of pleasing you, indeed, all my life, kingdom, and wealth.)
O King, what you think of me, I do it all for your pleasure, indeed, my entire life, kingdom, and wealth are for you.

(By the commander, I choose you, my incomparable uncle. He protects us in battles, the best Skanda, like the gods in battle.)
