Core and Pancharatra: Wounded Duryodhana comes out of the water, unable to bear the harsh words of Yudhisthira, and asks one of the Pandavas to fight him with a mace. Yudhisthira asks, where was his Dharma, whem he attacked Abhimanyu with many, when he was single?

इयं च पृथिवी सर्वा सम्लेच्छाटविका भृशम्। प्रसादाद्ध्रियते यस्य प्रत्यक्षं तव सञ्जय ॥९-३१-३॥

सलिलान्तर्गतो राजा धुन्वन्हस्तौ पुनः पुनः। मनश्चकार युद्धाय राजानं चाभ्यभाषत ॥९-३१-८॥

(You all, the sons of Pṛthā, are with friends and all with chariots and vehicles. I alone am distressed, without a chariot, deprived of a vehicle.)

आत्तशस्त्रै रथगतैर्बहुभिः परिवारितः। कथमेकः पदातिः सन्नशस्त्रो योद्धुमुत्सहे ॥९-३१-१०॥

न मे त्वत्तो भयं राजन्न च पार्थाद्वृकोदरात्। फल्गुनाद्वासुदेवाद्वा पाञ्चालेभ्योऽथ वा पुनः ॥९-३१-१३॥
na me tvatto bhayaṃ rājanna ca pārthādvṛkodarāt। phalgunādvāsudevādvā pāñcālebhyo'tha vā punaḥ ॥9-31-13॥

(By whom or from Yuyudhāna, or who else are your soldiers, I alone, angry, am not able to fight them here.)
I am not able to fight here alone against all your soldiers, whether they are led by Yuyudhāna or anyone else, as I am angry.
धर्ममूला सतां कीर्तिर्मनुष्याणां जनाधिप। धर्मं चैवेह कीर्तिं च पालयन्प्रब्रवीम्यहम् ॥९-३१-१५॥
dharmamūlā satāṃ kīrtirmanuṣyāṇāṃ janādhipa। dharmaṃ caiveha kīrtiṃ ca pālayanprabravīmyaham ॥9-31-15॥

(The fame of the virtuous is rooted in dharma, O ruler of people. Here, indeed, protecting dharma and fame, I declare.)
O ruler of people, the fame of virtuous men is rooted in dharma. Here, I declare that by protecting both dharma and fame, one upholds the highest virtues.
अहमुत्थाय वः सर्वान्प्रतियोत्स्यामि संयुगे। अन्वंशाभ्यागतान्सर्वानृतून्संवत्सरो यथा ॥९-३१-१६॥
aham utthāya vaḥ sarvān pratiyotsyāmi saṃyuge। anvaṃśābhyāgatān sarvān ṛtūn saṃvatsaro yathā ॥9-31-16॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having arisen; वः (vaḥ) - you all; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; प्रतियोत्स्यामि (pratiyotsyāmi) - will fight back; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; अन्वंशाभ्यागतान् (anvaṃśābhyāgatān) - descendants arrived; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; ऋतून् (ṛtūn) - seasons; संवत्सरः (saṃvatsaraḥ) - year; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(I, having arisen, will fight back against you all in battle, just as the year does against all the seasons that have arrived as descendants.)

(Today, your chariots with horses, being unarmed and even without chariot, like all stars at the end of night, the sun with brilliance, I will destroy. Be steady, O sons of Pandu.)

सङ्क्षोभ्य सलिलं वेगाद्गदामादाय वीर्यवान्। अद्रिसारमयीं गुर्वीं काञ्चनाङ्गदभूषणाम् ॥ अन्तर्जलात्समुत्तस्थौ नागेन्द्र इव निःश्वसन् ॥९-३१-३५॥
saṅkṣobhya salilaṃ vegādgadāmādāya vīryavān। adrisāramayīṃ gurvīṃ kāñcanāṅgadabhūṣaṇām ॥ antarjalātsamuttsathau nāgendra iva niḥśvasan ॥9-31-35॥

(But having seen that crossed, all rejoiced. The Panchalas and Pandavas gave each other palms.)
Upon witnessing the crossing, the Panchalas and Pandavas were filled with joy and exchanged greetings by clapping each other's palms.

(This was not your wisdom, Suyodhana, how thus many great warriors killed Abhimanyu in battle.)

आमुञ्च कवचं वीर मूर्धजान्यमयस्व च। यच्चान्यदपि ते नास्ति तदप्यादत्स्व भारत ॥ इममेकं च ते कामं वीर भूयो ददाम्यहम् ॥९-३१-५२॥
āmuñca kavacaṃ vīra mūrdhajānyamayasva ca। yaccānyadapi te nāsti tadapyādatsva bhārata ॥ imam ekaṃ ca te kāmaṃ vīra bhūyo dadāmy aham ॥9-31-52॥

(Remove your armor, hero, and take off your headgear. Whatever else you do not have, take that too, O Bharata. I give you this one wish again, hero.)

(Of the five sons of Pandu, by whom you wish to fight here, having killed him, indeed you become king, or if killed, attain heaven. Without life, O hero, what shall we do for your pleasure in battle?)
Among the five sons of Pandu, the one you wish to fight here, if you kill him, you will indeed become king, or if you are killed, you will attain heaven. Without life, O hero, what can we do to please you in battle?

(He, with a fastened helmet and beautiful golden armor, shone like a golden mountain king, your son, O king.)

atha vā phalgunenādya tvayā vā bharatarṣabha। yotsye'haṃ saṅgaraṃ prāpya vijeṣye ca raṇājire ॥9-31-58॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; फल्गुनेन (phalgunena) - with Arjuna; अद्य (adya) - today; त्वया (tvayā) - with you; वा (vā) - or; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; योत्स्ये (yotsye) - I shall fight; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; सङ्गरं (saṅgaraṃ) - battle; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having reached; विजेष्ये (vijeṣye) - I shall conquer; च (ca) - and; रणाजिरे (raṇājire) - in the battlefield;]
(Then, either with Arjuna or with you, O best of the Bharatas, I shall fight today; having reached the battle, I shall conquer in the battlefield.)

(I today will go to the very difficult end of enmity, O tiger among men, with a mace bound with a golden belt.)

(In mace battle, think that there is no one equal to me. With the mace, I will slay all who have assembled. Let him take the mace who indeed fights with me today.)
