तत्र दत्त्वा बहु द्रव्यं पूजयित्वा तथा द्विजान्। उपस्पृश्य च तत्रैव प्रहृष्टो मुसलायुधः ॥९-३५-२॥

(There, having given much wealth and having worshipped the twice-born, and having touched there itself, Musalayudha was joyful.)
Musalayudha, after giving much wealth and worshipping the Brahmins there, felt joyful after performing the rituals at that very place.
तत्र धर्मपरो ह्यासीत्त्रितः स सुमहातपाः। कूपे च वसता तेन सोमः पीतो महात्मना ॥९-३५-३॥
tatra dharmaparo hyāsīttritaḥ sa sumahātapāḥ। kūpe ca vasatā tena somaḥ pīto mahātmanā ॥9-35-3॥

(There, indeed, Trita, devoted to dharma, was of great penance. Living in the well, Soma was drunk by the great soul.)

āsan pūrvayuge rājan munayo bhrātaraḥ trayaḥ। ekataś ca dvitaś caiva tritaś cādityasaṃnibhāḥ ॥9-35-7॥

तेषां तु तपसा प्रीतो नियमेन दमेन च। अभवद्गौतमो नित्यं पिता धर्मरतः सदा ॥९-३५-९॥
teṣāṃ tu tapasā prīto niyamena damena ca। abhavadgautamo nityaṃ pitā dharmarataḥ sadā ॥9-35-9॥

स तु दीर्घेण कालेन तेषां प्रीतिमवाप्य च। जगाम भगवान्स्थानमनुरूपमिवात्मनः ॥९-३५-१०॥
sa tu dīrghena kālena teṣāṃ prītimavāpya ca। jagāma bhagavānsthānamanurūpamivātmanaḥ ॥9-35-10॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; दीर्घेण (dīrghena) - by long; कालेन (kālena) - by time; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - their; प्रीतिम् (prītim) - affection; अवाप्य (avāpya) - having obtained; च (ca) - and; जगाम (jagāma) - went; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; अनुरूपम् (anurūpam) - suitable; इव (iva) - as if; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself;]
(He, however, having obtained their affection over a long period, went to a place suitable for himself, as if.)

राजानस्तस्य ये पूर्वे याज्या ह्यासन्महात्मनः। ते सर्वे स्वर्गते तस्मिंस्तस्य पुत्रानपूजयन् ॥९-३५-११॥
rājānas tasya ye pūrve yājyā hy āsan mahātmanaḥ। te sarve svargate tasmiṁs tasya putrān apūjayan ॥9-35-11॥
[राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; तस्य (tasya) - his; ये (ye) - who; पूर्वे (pūrve) - former; याज्याः (yājyāḥ) - sacrificial priests; हि (hi) - indeed; आसन (āsan) - were; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great soul; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; स्वर्गते (svargate) - having ascended to heaven; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - when he; तस्य (tasya) - his; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; अपूजयन् (apūjayan) - worshipped;]
(The kings who were his former sacrificial priests indeed were of the great soul. When he ascended to heaven, they all worshipped his sons.)

तेषां तु कर्मणा राजंस्तथैवाध्ययनेन च। त्रितः स श्रेष्ठतां प्राप यथैवास्य पिता तथा ॥९-३५-१२॥

(Of them, but by action, O king, also indeed by study, Trita attained excellence as indeed his father so.)
Among them, O king, Trita achieved excellence through both his actions and studies, just as his father did.
तं स्म सर्वे महाभागा मुनयः पुण्यलक्षणाः। अपूजयन्महाभागं तथा विद्वत्तयैव तु ॥९-३५-१३॥
taṁ sma sarve mahābhāgā munayaḥ puṇyalakṣaṇāḥ। apūjayanmahābhāgaṁ tathā vidvattayaiva tu ॥9-35-13॥
[तं (taṁ) - him; स्म (sma) - indeed; सर्वे (sarve) - all; महाभागा (mahābhāgā) - great souls; मुनयः (munayaḥ) - sages; पुण्यलक्षणाः (puṇyalakṣaṇāḥ) - of virtuous characteristics; अपूजयन् (apūjayan) - worshipped; महाभागं (mahābhāgaṁ) - the great soul; तथा (tathā) - thus; विद्वत्तया (vidvattayā) - with wisdom; एव (eva) - indeed; तु (tu) - but;]
(Him indeed all great souls, sages of virtuous characteristics, worshipped the great soul thus with wisdom indeed but.)
All the great sages, who were of virtuous characteristics, worshipped him, the great soul, with wisdom.
कदाचिद्धि ततो राजन्भ्रातरावेकतद्वितौ। यज्ञार्थं चक्रतुश्चित्तं धनार्थं च विशेषतः ॥९-३५-१४॥
kadāciddhi tato rājanbhrātarāvekatadvitau। yajñārthaṃ cakratuścittaṃ dhanārthaṃ ca viśeṣataḥ ॥9-35-14॥

(Of them, a thought arose, having taken Trita, O subduer of enemies, having accepted all sacrificial animals, having received the animals, then.)
A thought arose among them, O subduer of enemies, after taking Trita and accepting all the sacrificial animals, and then receiving the animals.
सोमं पास्यामहे हृष्टाः प्राप्य यज्ञं महाफलम्। चक्रुश्चैव महाराज भ्रातरस्त्रय एव ह ॥९-३५-१६॥
somaṁ pāsyāmahe hṛṣṭāḥ prāpya yajñaṁ mahāphalam। cakruścaiva mahārāja bhrātarastraya eva ha ॥9-35-16॥

(Delighted, we shall drink Soma, having obtained the sacrifice of great fruit. And indeed, O great king, the three brothers did.)

तथा तु ते परिक्रम्य याज्यान्सर्वान्पशून्प्रति। याजयित्वा ततो याज्याँल्लब्ध्वा च सुबहून्पशून् ॥९-३५-१७॥
tathā tu te parikramya yājyānsarvānpashūnprati। yājayitvā tato yājyāṁllabdhvā ca subahūnpaśūn ॥9-35-17॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - they; परिक्रम्य (parikramya) - having circumambulated; याज्यान् (yājyān) - sacrificial animals; सर्वान् (sarvān) - all; पशून् (paśūn) - animals; प्रति (prati) - towards; याजयित्वा (yājayitvā) - having sacrificed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; याज्यान् (yājyān) - sacrificial animals; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; च (ca) - and; सुबहून् (subahūn) - many; पशून् (paśūn) - animals;]
(Thus, but they, having circumambulated all the sacrificial animals, towards the animals, having sacrificed, then having obtained many sacrificial animals.)

याज्येन कर्मणा तेन प्रतिगृह्य विधानतः। प्राचीं दिशं महात्मान आजग्मुस्ते महर्षयः ॥९-३५-१८॥
yājyena karmaṇā tena pratigṛhya vidhānataḥ। prācīṃ diśaṃ mahātmāna ājagmuste maharṣayaḥ ॥9-35-18॥

(Trita, of them, O great king, goes in front joyfully; on one side and Dvita indeed behind driving animals.)
O great king, Trita joyfully leads them from the front, while Dvita follows behind, herding the animals.
तयोश्चिन्ता समभवद्दृष्ट्वा पशुगणं महत्। कथं न स्युरिमा गाव आवाभ्यां वै विना त्रितम् ॥९-३५-२०॥
tayoś cintā samabhavad dṛṣṭvā paśugaṇaṃ mahat। kathaṃ na syur imā gāva āvābhyāṃ vai vinā tritam ॥9-35-20॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of them; चिन्ता (cintā) - worry; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - seeing; पशुगणं (paśugaṇam) - herd of animals; महत् (mahat) - great; कथम् (katham) - how; न (na) - not; स्युः (syuḥ) - would be; इमाः (imāḥ) - these; गावः (gāvaḥ) - cows; आवाभ्याम् (āvābhyām) - by us two; वै (vai) - indeed; विना (vinā) - without; त्रितम् (tritam) - third;]
(Of them, worry arose seeing the great herd of animals. How would these cows not be without us two, indeed, the third?)
Seeing the large herd of animals, they both became worried. They wondered how these cows could manage without the two of them, indeed, without a third person.
तावन्योन्यं समाभाष्य एकतश्च द्वितश्च ह। यदूचतुर्मिथः पापौ तन्निबोध जनेश्वर ॥९-३५-२१॥
tāv anyonyaṃ samābhāṣya ekataś ca dvitataś ca ha। yad ūcatur mithaḥ pāpau tan nibodha janeśvara ॥9-35-21॥
[तौ (tau) - they both; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyaṃ) - each other; समाभाष्य (samābhāṣya) - having conversed; एकतः (ekataḥ) - from one side; च (ca) - and; द्विततः (dvitataḥ) - from the other side; च (ca) - and; ह (ha) - indeed; यत् (yat) - what; ऊचतुः (ūcatuḥ) - they both said; मिथः (mithaḥ) - to each other; पापौ (pāpau) - O sinners; तत् (tat) - that; निबोध (nibodha) - listen; जनेश्वर (janeśvara) - O lord of people;]
(They both, having conversed with each other, from one side and from the other side, indeed, what they both said to each other, O sinners, that, listen, O lord of people.)
The two, after conversing with each other from both sides, indeed said to each other, 'O sinners, listen to what we have to say, O lord of people.'
त्रितो यज्ञेषु कुशलस्त्रितो वेदेषु निष्ठितः। अन्यास्त्रितो बहुतरा गावः समुपलप्स्यते ॥९-३५-२२॥
trito yajñeṣu kuśalastrito vedeṣu niṣṭhitaḥ। anyāstrito bahutarā gāvaḥ samupalapsyate ॥9-35-22॥

tato yathāvidhi prāptānbhāgānprāpya divaukasaḥ। prītātmāno dadustasmai varānyānmanasecchati ॥9-35-44॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to the rule; प्राप्तान् (prāptān) - obtained; भागान् (bhāgān) - shares; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; दिवौकसः (divaukasaḥ) - the gods; प्रीतात्मानः (prītātmānaḥ) - pleased in mind; ददुः (daduḥ) - gave; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; वरान् (varān) - boons; यान् (yān) - which; मनसा (manasā) - in mind; इच्छति (icchati) - desires;]
(Then, having obtained the shares according to the rule, the gods, pleased in mind, gave him the boons which he desired in mind.)
Then, as per the rules, the gods, having received their shares, were pleased and granted him the boons he wished for in his heart.
स तु वव्रे वरं देवांस्त्रातुमर्हथ मामितः। यश्चेहोपस्पृशेत्कूपे स सोमपगतिं लभेत् ॥९-३५-४५॥
sa tu vavre varaṁ devāṁstrātumarhatha māmitḥ। yaścehopaspṛśetkūpe sa somapagatiṁ labhet ॥9-35-45॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; वव्रे (vavre) - chose; वरं (varaṁ) - boon; देवान् (devān) - gods; त्रातुम् (trātum) - to protect; अर्हथ (arhatha) - you should; माम् (mām) - me; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; यः (yaḥ) - who; च (ca) - and; इह (iha) - here; उपस्पृशेत् (upaspṛśet) - touches; कूपे (kūpe) - in the well; सः (saḥ) - he; सोमपगतिं (somapagatiṁ) - path to Soma; लभेत् (labhet) - should obtain;]
(He, however, chose a boon: 'O gods, you should protect me from here. Whoever touches the well here should obtain the path to Soma.')
He chose a boon and said, 'O gods, please protect me from this place. Whoever touches the water in this well shall attain the path to Soma.'
तत्र चोर्मिमती राजन्नुत्पपात सरस्वती। तयोत्क्षिप्तस्त्रितस्तस्थौ पूजयंस्त्रिदिवौकसः ॥९-३५-४६॥
tatra cormimatī rājannutpapāta sarasvatī। tayotkṣiptastritastasthau pūjayaṃstridivaukasaḥ ॥9-35-46॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; च (ca) - and; उर्मिमती (urmimatī) - wave-filled; राजन् (rājan) - O king; उत्पपात (utpapāta) - arose; सरस्वती (sarasvatī) - Sarasvati; तया (tayā) - by her; उत्क्षिप्तः (utkṣiptaḥ) - lifted; त्रितः (tritaḥ) - Trita; तस्थौ (tasthau) - stood; पूजयन् (pūjayan) - worshipping; त्रिदिवौकसः (tridivaukasaḥ) - the inhabitants of heaven;]
(There, O king, the wave-filled Sarasvati arose. Lifted by her, Trita stood worshipping the inhabitants of heaven.)
There, O king, the Sarasvati river, filled with waves, arose. Trita, lifted by her, stood worshipping the heavenly beings.
तथेति चोक्त्वा विबुधा जग्मू राजन्यथागतम्। त्रितश्चाप्यगमत्प्रीतः स्वमेव निलयं तदा ॥९-३५-४७॥
tatheti coktvā vibudhā jagmū rājanyathāgatam। tritaścāpyagamatprītaḥ svameva nilayaṃ tadā ॥9-35-47॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so; च (ca) - and; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; विबुधाः (vibudhāḥ) - the gods; जग्मुः (jagmūḥ) - went; राजन् (rājan) - O king; यथा (yathā) - as; आगतम् (āgatam) - they came; त्रितः (tritaḥ) - Trita; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अगमत् (agamat) - went; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; स्वम् (svam) - his own; एव (eva) - indeed; निलयं (nilayaṃ) - abode; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Thus, having spoken, the gods went, O king, as they came. Trita also went, pleased, to his own abode then.)
Thus, after speaking, the gods departed as they had come, O king. Trita, too, pleased, returned to his own abode at that time.
क्रुद्धः स तु समासाद्य तावृषी भ्रातरौ तदा। उवाच परुषं वाक्यं शशाप च महातपाः ॥९-३५-४८॥
kruddhaḥ sa tu samāsādya tāvṛṣī bhrātarau tadā। uvāca paruṣaṃ vākyaṃ śaśāpa ca mahātapāḥ ॥9-35-48॥
[क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - approaching; तौ (tau) - those two; ऋषी (ṛṣī) - sages; भ्रातरौ (bhrātarau) - brothers; तदा (tadā) - then; उवाच (uvāca) - said; परुषं (paruṣam) - harsh; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - words; शशाप (śaśāpa) - cursed; च (ca) - and; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - great ascetic;]
(Angry, he, but approaching those two sage brothers then, said harsh words and cursed, the great ascetic.)
In his anger, the great ascetic approached the two sage brothers and then spoke harsh words and cursed them.
पशुलुब्धौ युवां यस्मान्मामुत्सृज्य प्रधावितौ। तस्माद्रूपेण तेषां वै दंष्ट्रिणामभितश्चरौ ॥९-३५-४९॥
paśulubdhau yuvāṃ yasmānmāmutsṛjya pradhāvitau। tasmādrūpeṇa teṣāṃ vai daṃṣṭriṇāmabhitaścarau ॥9-35-49॥
[पशुलुब्धौ (paśulubdhau) - animal-hunters; युवां (yuvāṃ) - you two; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; माम् (mām) - me; उत्सृज्य (utsṛjya) - leaving; प्रधावितौ (pradhāvitau) - ran away; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - in form; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; वै (vai) - indeed; दंष्ट्रिणाम् (daṃṣṭriṇām) - of the fanged ones; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - around; चरौ (carau) - you wander;]
(You two animal-hunters, having left me, ran away. Therefore, you wander around in the form of the fanged ones.)
"You two, who are hunters of animals, left me and ran away. Therefore, you now wander around in the form of those with fangs."
भवितारौ मया शप्तौ पापेनानेन कर्मणा। प्रसवश्चैव युवयोर्गोलाङ्गूलर्क्षवानराः ॥९-३५-५०॥
bhavitārau mayā śaptau pāpenānena karmaṇā। prasavaścaiva yuvayorgolāṅgūlarkṣavānarāḥ ॥9-35-50॥
[भवितारौ (bhavitārau) - will become; मया (mayā) - by me; शप्तौ (śaptau) - cursed; पापेन (pāpena) - by sin; अनेन (anena) - this; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by act; प्रसवः (prasavaḥ) - birth; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; युवयोः (yuvayoḥ) - of you two; गोलाङ्गूल (golāṅgūla) - tail of a cow; ऋक्ष (ṛkṣa) - bear; वानराः (vānarāḥ) - monkeys;]
(You two will be cursed by me due to this sinful act. Indeed, the birth of you two will be as a bear and monkeys with a cow's tail.)
You two are cursed by me for this sinful act. You will be reborn as a bear and monkeys with a cow's tail.
इत्युक्ते तु तदा तेन क्षणादेव विशां पते। तथाभूतावदृश्येतां वचनात्सत्यवादिनः ॥९-३५-५१॥
ityukte tu tadā tena kṣaṇādeva viśāṃ pate। tathābhūtāvadṛśyetāṃ vacanātsatyavādinaḥ ॥9-35-51॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्ते (ukte) - having been said; तु (tu) - but; तदा (tadā) - then; तेन (tena) - by him; क्षणात् (kṣaṇāt) - instantly; एव (eva) - indeed; विशां (viśāṃ) - of men; पते (pate) - O lord; तथा (tathā) - thus; भूतौ (bhūtau) - the beings; अदृश्येताम् (adṛśyetām) - became visible; वचनात् (vacanāt) - from the words; सत्यवादिनः (satyavādinaḥ) - of the truth-speaker;]
(Thus having been said, O lord of men, instantly indeed by him, the beings became visible from the words of the truth-speaker.)
Upon hearing these words, O lord of men, the beings instantly became visible due to the truth-speaker's words.
तत्राप्यमितविक्रान्तः स्पृष्ट्वा तोयं हलायुधः। दत्त्वा च विविधान्दायान्पूजयित्वा च वै द्विजान् ॥९-३५-५२॥
tatrāpyamitavikrāntaḥ spṛṣṭvā toyaṃ halāyudhaḥ। dattvā ca vividhāndāyānpūjayitvā ca vai dvijān ॥9-35-52॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; अमितविक्रान्तः (amitavikrāntaḥ) - immeasurable prowess; स्पृष्ट्वा (spṛṣṭvā) - having touched; तोयम् (toyam) - water; हलायुधः (halāyudhaḥ) - Halayudha (Balarama); दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; च (ca) - and; विविधान् (vividhān) - various; दायान् (dāyān) - gifts; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having worshipped; च (ca) - and; वै (vai) - indeed; द्विजान् (dvijān) - the twice-born (Brahmins);]
(There also, the one with immeasurable prowess, Halayudha (Balarama), having touched the water, and having given various gifts, and having worshipped the twice-born (Brahmins), indeed.)
There, the mighty Balarama, known as Halayudha, also touched the water, offered various gifts, and worshipped the Brahmins with great reverence.
उदपानं च तं दृष्ट्वा प्रशस्य च पुनः पुनः। नदीगतमदीनात्मा प्राप्तो विनशनं तदा ॥९-३५-५३॥
udapānaṃ ca taṃ dṛṣṭvā praśasya ca punaḥ punaḥ। nadīgataṃ adīnātma prāpto vinaśanaṃ tadā ॥9-35-53॥
[उदपानम् (udapānam) - water-well; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - that; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; प्रशस्य (praśasya) - praised; च (ca) - and; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; नदीगतं (nadīgataṃ) - gone to the river; अदीनात्मा (adīnātma) - undaunted soul; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - reached; विनशनं (vinaśanam) - destruction; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having seen the water-well and praised it again and again, the undaunted soul, having gone to the river, then reached destruction.)
Upon seeing the water-well and repeatedly praising it, the undaunted soul went to the river and then met his end.
