अत्यद्भुतमिदं ब्रह्मञ्श्रुतवानस्मि तत्त्वतः। अभिषेकं कुमारस्य विस्तरेण यथाविधि ॥९-४६-१॥
atyadbhutamidaṁ brahmañśrutavānasmi tattvataḥ। abhiṣekaṁ kumārasya vistareṇa yathāvidhi ॥9-46-1॥
[अत्यद्भुतम् (atyadbhutam) - very wonderful; इदम् (idam) - this; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; श्रुतवान् (śrutavān) - heard; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly; अभिषेकम् (abhiṣekam) - consecration; कुमारस्य (kumārasya) - of the prince; विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in detail; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to the rules;]
(I have truly heard this very wonderful consecration of the prince in detail, O Brahman, according to the rules.)
"O Brahman, I have heard in detail about this very wonderful consecration of the prince, performed truly according to the rules."
यच्छ्रुत्वा पूतमात्मानं विजानामि तपोधन। प्रहृष्टानि च रोमाणि प्रसन्नं च मनो मम ॥९-४६-२॥
yacchrutvā pūtamātmānaṃ vijānāmi tapodhana। prahṛṣṭāni ca romāṇi prasannaṃ ca mano mama ॥9-46-2॥
[यत् (yat) - which; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; पूतम् (pūtam) - purified; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; विजानामि (vijānāmi) - I know; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O sage; प्रहृष्टानि (prahṛṣṭāni) - thrilled; च (ca) - and; रोमाणि (romāṇi) - hairs; प्रसन्नम् (prasannam) - pleased; च (ca) - and; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; मम (mama) - my;]
(Having heard which, O sage, I know my self to be purified; my hairs are thrilled and my mind is pleased.)
"O sage, upon hearing this, I realize my soul is purified; my body is thrilled and my mind is at peace."
अभिषेकं कुमारस्य दैत्यानां च वधं तथा। श्रुत्वा मे परमा प्रीतिर्भूयः कौतूहलं हि मे ॥९-४६-३॥
abhiṣekaṃ kumārasya daityānāṃ ca vadhaṃ tathā। śrutvā me paramā prītirbhūyaḥ kautūhalaṃ hi me ॥9-46-3॥

(The consecration of the prince and the slaughter of the demons also, having heard, my great joy again, indeed my curiosity.)
Having heard about the consecration of the prince and the slaughter of the demons, my joy was great, and my curiosity was indeed piqued again.
अपां पतिः कथं ह्यस्मिन्नभिषिक्तः सुरासुरैः। तन्मे ब्रूहि महाप्राज्ञ कुशलो ह्यसि सत्तम ॥९-४६-४॥
apāṃ patiḥ kathaṃ hyasminn abhiṣiktaḥ surāsuraiḥ। tanme brūhi mahāprājña kuśalo hyasi sattama ॥9-46-4॥
[अपाम् (apām) - of waters; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord; कथम् (katham) - how; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; अभिषिक्तः (abhiṣiktaḥ) - consecrated; सुरासुरैः (surāsuraiḥ) - by gods and demons; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O great wise one; कुशलः (kuśalaḥ) - skilled; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - you are; सत्तम (sattama) - O best one;]
(How indeed is the lord of waters consecrated by gods and demons in this? Tell me that, O great wise one, for you are indeed skilled, O best one.)
"O great wise one, please tell me how the lord of waters was consecrated by the gods and demons in this context, as you are indeed skilled and the best among men."
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

शृणु राजन्निदं चित्रं पूर्वकल्पे यथातथम्। आदौ कृतयुगे तस्मिन्वर्तमाने यथाविधि ॥ वरुणं देवताः सर्वाः समेत्येदमथाब्रुवन् ॥९-४६-५॥
śṛṇu rājannidaṃ citraṃ pūrvakalpe yathātatham। ādau kṛtayuge tasminvartamāne yathāvidhi ॥ varuṇaṃ devatāḥ sarvāḥ sametyedamathābruvan ॥9-46-5॥
[शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इदं (idaṃ) - this; चित्रं (citraṃ) - wonderful; पूर्वकल्पे (pūrvakalpe) - in the previous age; यथातथम् (yathātatham) - as it was; आदौ (ādau) - in the beginning; कृतयुगे (kṛtayuge) - in the Krita Yuga; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; वर्तमाने (vartamāne) - existing; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to the rule; वरुणं (varuṇam) - Varuna; देवताः (devatāḥ) - the gods; सर्वाः (sarvāḥ) - all; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; इदम् (idam) - this; अथ (atha) - then; अब्रुवन् (abruvan) - said;]
(Listen, O king, to this wonderful story as it was in the previous age. In the beginning, in the Krita Yuga, as it existed according to the rule, all the gods having assembled, then said this to Varuna.)
"Listen, O king, to this wonderful tale from the previous age, exactly as it happened. In the beginning of the Krita Yuga, when everything was as it should be, all the gods gathered and spoke to Varuna."
यथास्मान्सुरराट्शक्रो भयेभ्यः पाति सर्वदा। तथा त्वमपि सर्वासां सरितां वै पतिर्भव ॥९-४६-६॥
yathāsmānsurarāṭśakro bhayebhyaḥ pāti sarvadā। tathā tvamapi sarvāsāṃ saritāṃ vai patirbhava ॥9-46-6॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; सुरराट् (surarāṭ) - king of gods; शक्रः (śakraḥ) - Indra; भयेभ्यः (bhayebhyaḥ) - from fears; पाति (pāti) - protects; सर्वदा (sarvadā) - always; तथा (tathā) - so; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; सर्वासाम् (sarvāsām) - of all; सरिताम् (saritām) - rivers; वै (vai) - indeed; पतिः (patiḥ) - lord; भव (bhava) - be;]
(As the king of gods, Indra, always protects us from fears, so you also be the lord of all rivers.)
"Just as Indra, the king of gods, always protects us from fears, you too should become the lord of all rivers."
वासश्च ते सदा देव सागरे मकरालये। समुद्रोऽयं तव वशे भविष्यति नदीपतिः ॥९-४६-७॥
vāsaśca te sadā deva sāgare makarālaye। samudro'yaṃ tava vaśe bhaviṣyati nadīpatiḥ ॥9-46-7॥
[वासः (vāsaḥ) - residence; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; सदा (sadā) - always; देव (deva) - O god; सागरे (sāgare) - in the ocean; मकरालये (makarālaye) - in the abode of crocodiles; समुद्रः (samudraḥ) - the ocean; अयम् (ayam) - this; तव (tava) - your; वशे (vaśe) - under control; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; नदीपतिः (nadīpatiḥ) - lord of rivers;]
(Your residence is always, O god, in the ocean, in the abode of crocodiles. This ocean will be under your control, O lord of rivers.)
"O god, your eternal abode is in the ocean, the dwelling place of crocodiles. The ocean, lord of rivers, will be under your command."
सोमेन सार्धं च तव हानिवृद्धी भविष्यतः। एवमस्त्विति तान्देवान्वरुणो वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥९-४६-८॥
somena sārdhaṃ ca tava hānivṛddhī bhaviṣyataḥ। evamastviti tāndevānvaruṇo vākyamabravīt ॥9-46-8॥
[सोमेन (somena) - with Soma; सार्धं (sārdhaṃ) - together; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - your; हानिवृद्धी (hānivṛddhī) - loss and gain; भविष्यतः (bhaviṣyataḥ) - will be; एवम् (evam) - thus; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; इति (iti) - thus; तान् (tān) - those; देवान् (devān) - gods; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuna; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(With Soma, your loss and gain will be. Thus let it be, Varuna spoke these words to those gods.)
Varuna addressed the gods, saying, "With Soma, your fortunes will fluctuate. So be it."
समागम्य ततः सर्वे वरुणं सागरालयम्। अपां पतिं प्रचक्रुर्हि विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥९-४६-९॥
samāgamya tataḥ sarve varuṇaṃ sāgarālayam। apāṃ patiṃ pracakrurhi vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā ॥9-46-9॥
[समागम्य (samāgamya) - having assembled; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सर्वे (sarve) - all; वरुणम् (varuṇam) - Varuna; सागरालयम् (sāgarālayam) - the ocean-dwelling; अपाम् (apām) - of waters; पतिम् (patim) - the lord; प्रचक्रुः (pracakruḥ) - appointed; हि (hi) - indeed; विधिदृष्टेन (vidhidṛṣṭena) - by the prescribed; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - rite;]
(Having assembled then, all appointed Varuna, the ocean-dwelling lord of waters, indeed by the prescribed rite.)
Then, having gathered, they all appointed Varuna, the lord of the ocean, according to the prescribed rites.
अभिषिच्य ततो देवा वरुणं यादसां पतिम्। जग्मुः स्वान्येव स्थानानि पूजयित्वा जलेश्वरम् ॥९-४६-१०॥
abhiṣicya tato devā varuṇaṃ yādasāṃ patim। jagmuḥ svānyeva sthānāni pūjayitvā jaleśvaram ॥9-46-10॥
[अभिषिच्य (abhiṣicya) - having anointed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; वरुणम् (varuṇam) - Varuna; यादसाम् (yādasām) - of the aquatic beings; पतिम् (patim) - the lord; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; स्वानि (svāni) - their own; एव (eva) - indeed; स्थानानि (sthānāni) - places; पूजयित्वा (pūjayitvā) - having worshipped; जलेश्वरम् (jaleśvaram) - the lord of waters;]
(Having anointed Varuna, the lord of the aquatic beings, the gods then went to their own places, having worshipped the lord of waters.)
After anointing Varuna as the lord of the aquatic beings, the gods returned to their respective abodes, paying homage to the lord of waters.
अभिषिक्तस्ततो देवैर्वरुणोऽपि महायशाः। सरितः सागरांश्चैव नदांश्चैव सरांसि च ॥ पालयामास विधिना यथा देवाञ्शतक्रतुः ॥९-४६-११॥
abhiṣiktastato devaivaruno'pi mahāyaśāḥ। saritaḥ sāgarāṃścaiva nadāṃścaiva sarāṃsi ca ॥ pālayāmāsa vidhinā yathā devāñśatakratuḥ ॥9-46-11॥
[अभिषिक्तः (abhiṣiktaḥ) - anointed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दैवैः (daivaiḥ) - by the gods; वरुणः (varuṇaḥ) - Varuna; अपि (api) - also; महायशाः (mahāyaśāḥ) - greatly renowned; सरितः (saritaḥ) - rivers; सागरान् (sāgarān) - oceans; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; नदान् (nadān) - streams; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सरांसि (sarāṃsi) - lakes; च (ca) - and; पालयामास (pālayāmāsa) - protected; विधिना (vidhinā) - according to the rule; यथा (yathā) - as; देवान् (devān) - the gods; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - Indra;]
(Then the greatly renowned Varuna, anointed by the gods, protected the rivers, oceans, streams, and lakes according to the rule, as Indra (Shatakratu) did the gods.)
Then the greatly renowned Varuna, anointed by the gods, took charge of the rivers, oceans, streams, and lakes, governing them according to the divine law, just as Indra governs the gods.
ततस्तत्राप्युपस्पृश्य दत्त्वा च विविधं वसु। अग्नितीर्थं महाप्राज्ञः स जगाम प्रलम्बहा ॥९-४६-१२॥
tatastatrāpyupaspṛśya dattvā ca vividhaṃ vasu। agnitīrthaṃ mahāprājñaḥ sa jagāma pralambahā ॥9-46-12॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; उपस्पृश्य (upaspṛśya) - having touched; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; च (ca) - and; विविधं (vividhaṃ) - various; वसु (vasu) - wealth; अग्नितीर्थं (agnitīrthaṃ) - to the sacred fire; महाप्राज्ञः (mahāprājñaḥ) - the great wise one; सः (saḥ) - he; जगाम (jagāma) - went; प्रलम्बहा (pralambahā) - the destroyer of Pralamba;]
(Then, having touched there also and having given various wealth to the sacred fire, the great wise one, the destroyer of Pralamba, went.)
Then, the great wise one, known as the destroyer of Pralamba, performed the ritual of touching the sacred waters there and offered various kinds of wealth to the sacred fire before proceeding on his journey.
नष्टो न दृश्यते यत्र शमीगर्भे हुताशनः ॥९-४६-१२॥
naṣṭo na dṛśyate yatra śamīgarbhe hutāśanaḥ ॥9-46-12॥
[नष्टः (naṣṭaḥ) - lost; न (na) - not; दृश्यते (dṛśyate) - seen; यत्र (yatra) - where; शमीगर्भे (śamīgarbhe) - in the interior of the Shami tree; हुताशनः (hutāśanaḥ) - fire;]
(Lost, not seen where in the interior of the Shami tree is the fire.)
The fire, which is lost, is not seen where it is inside the Shami tree.
लोकालोकविनाशे च प्रादुर्भूते तदानघ। उपतस्थुर्महात्मानं सर्वलोकपितामहम् ॥९-४६-१३॥
lokālokavināśe ca prādurbhūte tadānaghaḥ। upatasthurmahātmānaṃ sarvalokapitāmaham ॥9-46-13॥
[लोक (loka) - world; अलोक (aloka) - non-world; विनाशे (vināśe) - destruction; च (ca) - and; प्रादुर्भूते (prādurbhūte) - manifested; तदा (tadā) - then; अनघ (anagha) - sinless one; उपतस्थुः (upatasthuḥ) - approached; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - great soul; सर्वलोक (sarvaloka) - all worlds; पितामहम् (pitāmaham) - grandfather;]
(At the destruction of the world and non-world, when it manifested, then, O sinless one, the great souls approached the grandfather of all worlds.)

अग्निः प्रनष्टो भगवान्कारणं च न विद्महे। सर्वलोकक्षयो मा भूत्सम्पादयतु नोऽनलम् ॥९-४६-१४॥
agniḥ pranaṣṭo bhagavān kāraṇaṃ ca na vidmahe। sarvalokakṣayo mā bhūt sampādayatu no'nalam ॥9-46-14॥
[अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; प्रनष्टः (pranaṣṭaḥ) - lost; भगवान् (bhagavān) - Lord; कारणम् (kāraṇam) - reason; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; विद्महे (vidmahe) - we know; सर्वलोकक्षयः (sarvalokakṣayaḥ) - destruction of all worlds; मा (mā) - not; भूत् (bhūt) - be; सम्पादयतु (sampādayatu) - may accomplish; नः (naḥ) - our; अनलम् (analam) - fire;]
(The fire is lost, O Lord, and we do not know the reason. Let there not be destruction of all worlds; may our fire be accomplished.)

किमर्थं भगवानग्निः प्रनष्टो लोकभावनः। विज्ञातश्च कथं देवैस्तन्ममाचक्ष्व तत्त्वतः ॥९-४६-१५॥
kimarthaṃ bhagavānagniḥ pranaṣṭo lokabhāvanaḥ। vijñātaśca kathaṃ devaistanmamācakṣva tattvataḥ ॥9-46-15॥
[किमर्थम् (kimartham) - for what reason; भगवान् (bhagavān) - O Lord; अग्निः (agniḥ) - Agni; प्रनष्टः (pranaṣṭaḥ) - disappeared; लोकभावनः (lokabhāvanaḥ) - protector of the world; विज्ञातः (vijñātaḥ) - known; च (ca) - and; कथम् (katham) - how; दैवैः (devaiḥ) - by the gods; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - to me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; तत्त्वतः (tattvataḥ) - truly;]
(For what reason did Lord Agni, the protector of the world, disappear? And how was he known by the gods? Tell me that truly.)

भृगोः शापाद्भृशं भीतो जातवेदाः प्रतापवान्। शमीगर्भमथासाद्य ननाश भगवांस्ततः ॥९-४६-१६॥
bhṛgoḥ śāpādbhṛśaṃ bhīto jātavedāḥ pratāpavān। śamīgarbhamathāsādya nanāśa bhagavāṃstataḥ ॥9-46-16॥
[भृगोः (bhṛgoḥ) - of Bhrigu; शापात् (śāpāt) - from curse; भृशम् (bhṛśam) - greatly; भीतः (bhītaḥ) - afraid; जातवेदाः (jātavedāḥ) - Agni; प्रतापवान् (pratāpavān) - powerful; शमीगर्भम् (śamīgarbham) - inside the Sami tree; अथ (atha) - then; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; ननाश (nanāśa) - disappeared; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the divine; ततः (tataḥ) - from there;]
(Due to Bhrigu's curse, the powerful Agni, greatly afraid, reached inside the Sami tree and then the divine disappeared from there.)
Because of Bhrigu's curse, the mighty Agni, in great fear, entered the Sami tree and then vanished from there.
प्रनष्टे तु तदा वह्नौ देवाः सर्वे सवासवाः। अन्वेषन्त तदा नष्टं ज्वलनं भृशदुःखिताः ॥९-४६-१७॥
pranaṣṭe tu tadā vahnau devāḥ sarve savāsavāḥ। anveṣanta tadā naṣṭaṃ jvalanaṃ bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ ॥9-46-17॥
[प्रनष्टे (pranaṣṭe) - when destroyed; तु (tu) - but; तदा (tadā) - then; वह्नौ (vahnau) - in the fire; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; सर्वे (sarve) - all; सवासवाः (savāsavāḥ) - with Indra; अन्वेषन्त (anveṣanta) - searched; तदा (tadā) - then; नष्टं (naṣṭaṃ) - lost; ज्वलनं (jvalanaṃ) - fire; भृशदुःखिताः (bhṛśaduḥkhitāḥ) - greatly distressed;]
(When the fire was destroyed, all the gods with Indra searched for the lost fire, greatly distressed.)
When the fire was destroyed, all the gods, including Indra, were greatly distressed and searched for the lost fire.
ततोऽग्नितीर्थमासाद्य शमीगर्भस्थमेव हि। ददृशुर्ज्वलनं तत्र वसमानं यथाविधि ॥९-४६-१८॥
tato'gnitīrthamāsādya śamīgarbhasthameva hi। dadṛśurjvalanaṃ tatra vasamānaṃ yathāvidhi ॥9-46-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अग्नितीर्थम् (agnitīrtham) - Agnitirtha; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having reached; शमीगर्भस्थम् (śamīgarbhastham) - inside the Sami tree; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - certainly; ददृशुः (dadṛśuḥ) - they saw; ज्वलनम् (jvalanam) - fire; तत्र (tatra) - there; वसमानम् (vasamānam) - residing; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - properly;]
(Then, having reached Agnitirtha, they certainly saw the fire residing properly inside the Sami tree.)

देवाः सर्वे नरव्याघ्र बृहस्पतिपुरोगमाः। ज्वलनं तं समासाद्य प्रीताभूवन्सवासवाः ॥ पुनर्यथागतं जग्मुः सर्वभक्षश्च सोऽभवत् ॥९-४६-१९॥

[देवाः (devāḥ) - gods; सर्वे (sarve) - all; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; बृहस्पतिपुरोगमाः (bṛhaspatipurogamāḥ) - led by Bṛhaspati; ज्वलनं (jvalanaṃ) - fire; तं (taṃ) - that; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - approaching; प्रीताभूवन् (prītābhūvan) - became pleased; सवासवाः (savāsavāḥ) - with Indra; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; यथागतं (yathāgatam) - as they came; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; सर्वभक्षः (sarvabhakṣaḥ) - all-devouring; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(The gods, all led by Bṛhaspati, approached the fire and became pleased with Indra. Again, as they came, they went, and he became all-devouring.)
All the gods, led by Bṛhaspati, approached the fire and were pleased with Indra. Then, they returned as they had come, and he became all-devouring.
भृगोः शापान्महीपाल यदुक्तं ब्रह्मवादिना। तत्राप्याप्लुत्य मतिमान्ब्रह्मयोनिं जगाम ह ॥९-४६-२०॥
bhṛgoḥ śāpānmahīpāla yaduktaṃ brahmavādinā। tatrāpyāplutya matimānbrahmayoniṃ jagāma ha ॥9-46-20॥
