००१. सञ्जयधृतराष्ट्रयोः संलापः॥ द्रौणिकृपकृतवर्मभिर्वनमध्यमेत्य न्यग्रोधस्याधस्तादुपवेशनम्॥ तत्र रात्रौ घूकेन बहुकाकावधदर्शिना द्रौणिना तद्वत्स्वेनापि पाण्डववधनिर्धारणम्॥ ततः कृपकृतवर्माणौ समुद्बौध्य स्वकर्तव्यकथनप्रार्थना॥(70)
001. Sañjaya and Dhṛtarāṣṭra converse. Drauṇi, Kṛpa, and Kṛtavarman arrive at the center of the forest and sit beneath a banyan tree. That night, Drauṇi, having witnessed an owl kill many crows, resolves to destroy the Pāṇḍavas in the same way. Afterwards, Kṛpa and Kṛtavarman awaken and ask about their own duties. (70)

003. Aśvatthāman, disregarding Kṛpa's advice, in the presence of Kṛpa and Kṛtavarman, made a vow at night to kill the sleeping Pāṇḍavas and Pāñcālas.

005. Kṛpa tried to stop Drauṇi by explaining that killing the sleeping was unrighteous, but Drauṇi, furious over his father's death, went to the enemy camp to kill. Out of friendship, Kṛpa, Kṛtavarma, and Śyāma followed him.
००६. अश्वत्थाम्नः शिबिरद्वारस्थमहाभूतदर्शनम्॥ भूतजिगीषया द्रौणिविसृष्टानामस्त्रशस्त्राणां भूतेन ग्रसनम्॥ ततश्चिंतातान्तश्च द्रौणेर्महादेवोपासनाध्यवसायः॥(34)
006. Aśvatthāman, standing at the camp gate, witnessed a vision of great beings. Desiring to conquer supernatural beings, the weapons and missiles released by Droṇa's son were consumed by a being. Then, overwhelmed by anxiety, Droṇa's son resolved to worship Mahādeva. (34)
००७. द्रौणिना शिवस्तुतिः॥ द्रौणेः पुरतः काञ्चनवेद्यामग्न्युद्भवः॥ द्रौणेः समीपे नानाविधभीषणभूतगणानामागमनम्॥ शिवेन आत्मनो हविष्ट्वकल्पनपूर्वकमग्नौ प्रविष्टाय द्रौणये खङ्गदानपूर्वकं तच्छरीरप्रवेशः॥पुनरश्वत्थाम्नः शिबिरगमनम्॥(67)
007. Drona's son praised Shiva. In front of him, fire arose on a golden altar. Near him, various terrifying spirits appeared. Shiva, after preparing his own offering, entered the fire and, after giving the sword, entered Drona's son's body. Afterwards, Ashvatthaman returned to the camp. (67)
००८. शिबिरद्वारे कृपकृतवर्माणौ संस्थाप्यान्तः प्रविष्टेन द्रौणिना धृष्टद्युम्नादिपाञ्चालानां द्रौपदेयादीनां च वधः॥ भयाद्वहिर्निष्क्रान्तानां कृपकृतवर्मक्ष्यां वधः॥(164)
008. Aśvatthāman, after stationing Kṛpa and Kṛtavarman at the camp gate, entered inside and killed Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the Pāñcālas, the sons of Draupadī, and others; those who fled outside in fear were also killed by Kṛpa and Kṛtavarman.
००९. द्रौणिकृपकृतवर्मभिर्दुर्योधनमेत्य शोचनम्॥ दुर्योधनम्प्रति द्रौणिना सुप्तजवधकथनम्॥ दुर्योधनेन प्राणत्यागः॥ द्रौण्यादीनां नगरगमनम्॥ सञ्जयस्य व्यासानुग्रहप्राप्तदिव्यज्ञाननाशः॥(63)
009. Drauṇi, Kṛpa, and Kṛtavarman approach Duryodhana and lament. Drauṇi narrates to Duryodhana the killing of the sleeping. Duryodhana gives up his life. Drauṇi and the others go to the city. Sañjaya loses the divine knowledge he had received by Vyāsa's grace. (63)
०१०. दैवादुर्वरितेन दृष्टद्युम्नसारथिना युधिष्ठिराय रात्रौ वृत्तशिबिरवृत्तान्तविनेदनम्॥
010. By fate and misfortune, Dṛṣṭadyumna's charioteer reported to Yudhiṣṭhira at night about the incident that had occurred in the camp.
०११. मकुलेन युधिष्ठिरसमोषं प्रति द्रौपथानयनम्॥ द्रौपद्या द्रौणिमस्तकमणिहरणचोदितेन भीमेन नकुलसारथिना रथेन द्रौणिवभ्राय प्रस्थानम्॥ (32)
011. Nakula, along with Yudhishthira, set out to bring Draupadi's sons. At Draupadi's urging, after the theft of the jewel from Drona's head, Bhima, with Nakula as his charioteer, departed by chariot towards Ashvatthama.
०१२. द्रौणिजिघांसया भीमे प्रतिगते कृष्णेन युधिष्ठिरम्प्रति द्रौणिदौश्शील्यादिकथनपूर्वकं भीमस्य ततो रक्षणीयत्वकथनम्॥
012. After Bhima returned due to Drona's son's murderous intent, Krishna, having first described Drona's son's wickedness to Yudhishthira, then spoke about the necessity of protecting Bhima.
०१३. कृष्णादिभिर्भागीरथीतीरे व्याससमीपसमासीनद्रौणिदर्शनम्॥
013. Kṛṣṇa and others, seated near Vyāsa on the bank of the Bhāgīrathī, saw Droṇa's son (Aśvatthāman).
०१४. अर्जुनेन कृष्णाज्ञया द्रौण्यस्त्रप्रत्यस्त्रप्रयोगः॥
014. At Krishna's command, Arjuna used a counter-weapon against the weapon of Drona's son.
०१५. अर्जुनेन व्यासनारदभावानुरोधेन स्वप्रयुक्तब्रह्मशिरोस्त्रप्रतिसंहारः॥ कृष्णेनाश्वत्थामानं प्रति उत्तरागर्भे ऐषीकास्त्रपातेऽपि मृतशिशोः स्वेन समुज्जीवनप्रतिज्ञा॥ ब्रह्मचर्याभावादस्रप्रतिसंहारासमर्थेन द्रौणिना व्यासकृष्णावनादृस्य पाण्वगर्भेष्वैषीकास्त्रोत्सर्जनम्॥
015. Arjuna, at the request of Vyāsa and Nārada, withdrew the Brahmaśiras weapon he had launched. Kṛṣṇa, even when Aśvatthāmā cast the missile at Uttara's unborn child, vowed to revive the dead child by his own power. The son of Droṇa, unable to withdraw the weapon due to lack of celibacy and disregarding the protection of Vyāsa and Kṛṣṇa, released the missile at the Pāṇḍava fetuses.
०१६. कृष्णेन स्ववचनोल्लङ्घनेनास्त्रप्रयोक्तुरश्वत्थाम्नः शापदानां व्यासेन तदनुमोदनं च॥ भीमेन द्रौणिमस्तकमणिदा नेन द्रौपदीसमाश्वासनम्॥ युधिष्ठिरेण द्रौपदीवचनात्स्वमस्तके तन्मणिधारणम्॥ (33)
016. Kṛṣṇa, by breaking his own promise, and Vyāsa, by approving the curse given to Aśvatthāman, and Bhīma, by taking the jewel from Droṇa's son's head, comforted Draupadī; Yudhiṣṭhira, following Draupadī's words, wore that jewel on his own head.
०१७. युधिष्ठिरेण द्रौणेरेकस्य बहुमारणशक्तिप्रश्ने कृष्णेन रुद्रप्रसादादित्युक्त्वा रुद्रमहिमकथनम्॥ (26)
017. Yudhishthira asked Krishna about Ashvatthama's ability to kill many at once, and Krishna, saying it was by Rudra's grace, narrated the greatness of Rudra.
