तथा प्रयाते शिबिरं द्रोणपुत्रे महारथे। कच्चित्कृपश्च भोजश्च भयार्तौ न न्यवर्तताम् ॥१०-८-१॥
tathā prayāte śibiraṃ droṇaputre mahārathe। kaccitkṛpaśca bhojaśca bhayārtau na nyavartatām ॥10-8-1॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; प्रयाते (prayāte) - having departed; शिबिरं (śibiram) - to the camp; द्रोणपुत्रे (droṇaputre) - when the son of Droṇa; महारथे (mahārathe) - the great chariot-warrior; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; भोजः (bhojaḥ) - Bhoja; च (ca) - and; भयार्तौ (bhayārtau) - afflicted by fear; न (na) - not; न्यवर्तताम् (nyavartatām) - did (they) turn back;]
(Thus, when the son of Droṇa, the great chariot-warrior, had departed to the camp, whether Kṛpa and Bhoja, afflicted by fear, did not turn back.)
Thus, when Droṇa's son, the great chariot-warrior, had gone to the camp, did Kṛpa and Bhoja, stricken by fear, not turn back?
कच्चिन्न वारितौ क्षुद्रै रक्षिभिर्नोपलक्षितौ। असह्यमिति वा मत्वा न निवृत्तौ महारथौ ॥१०-८-२॥
kaccinna vāritau kṣudrai rakṣibhirnopalakṣitau। asahyamiti vā matvā na nivṛttau mahārathau ॥10-8-2॥
[कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; न (na) - not; वारितौ (vāritau) - turned back; क्षुद्रैः (kṣudraiḥ) - by petty; रक्षिभिः (rakṣibhiḥ) - by guards; न (na) - not; उपलक्षितौ (upalakṣitau) - noticed; असह्यम् (asahyam) - unbearable; इति (iti) - thus; वा (vā) - or; मत्वा (matvā) - thinking; न (na) - not; निवृत्तौ (nivṛttau) - turned back; महारथौ (mahārathau) - the great warriors;]
(Whether the great warriors were not turned back by petty guards, nor noticed, or thinking 'it is unbearable', did not turn back.)
Did the great warriors turn back, either because they were stopped by petty guards, or because they thought 'this is unbearable'?
कच्चित्प्रमथ्य शिबिरं हत्वा सोमकपाण्डवान्। दुर्योधनस्य पदवीं गतौ परमिकां रणे ॥१०-८-३॥
kaccit pramathya śibiraṃ hatvā somaka-pāṇḍavān। duryodhanasya padavīṃ gatau paramikāṃ raṇe ॥10-8-3॥

(Whether, having crushed the camp and slain the Somakas and Pāṇḍavas, you have gone to the supreme path of Duryodhana in battle.)
Have you, after crushing the camp and killing the Somakas and Pāṇḍavas, reached Duryodhana's supreme path in battle?
पाञ्चालैर्वा विनिहतौ कच्चिन्नास्वपतां क्षितौ। कच्चित्ताभ्यां कृतं कर्म तन्ममाचक्ष्व सञ्जय ॥१०-८-४॥
pāñcālairvā vinihatau kaccinnāsvapatāṃ kṣitau। kaccittābhyāṃ kṛtaṃ karma tanmamācakṣva sañjaya ॥10-8-4॥
[पाञ्चालैः (pāñcālaiḥ) - by the Pāñcālas; वा (vā) - or; विनिहतौ (vinihatau) - slain; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; न (na) - not; अस्वपताम् (āsvapatām) - of the sons of Āsvapati; क्षितौ (kṣitau) - on the earth; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; ताभ्याम् (tābhyām) - by those two; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; कर्म (karma) - deed; तत् (tat) - that; मम (mama) - to me; आचक्ष्व (ācakṣva) - tell; सञ्जय (sañjaya) - O Sañjaya;]
(By the Pāñcālas or slain, whether not of the sons of Āsvapati on the earth; whether by those two the deed was done, that to me tell, O Sañjaya.)
O Sañjaya, tell me whether the sons of Āsvapati have been slain by the Pāñcālas on the battlefield, or whether those two have accomplished their task.

तस्मिन्प्रयाते शिबिरं द्रोणपुत्रे महात्मनि। कृपश्च कृतवर्मा च शिबिरद्वार्यतिष्ठताम् ॥१०-८-५॥
tasmin prayāte śibiraṃ droṇaputre mahātmani। kṛpaś ca kṛtavarmā ca śibiradvāry atiṣṭhatām ॥10-8-5॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; प्रयाते (prayāte) - having departed; शिबिरम् (śibiram) - camp; द्रोणपुत्रे (droṇaputre) - Drona's son; महात्मनि (mahātmani) - the great-souled; कृपः (kṛpaḥ) - Kṛpa; च (ca) - and; कृतवर्मा (kṛtavarmā) - Kṛtavarmā; च (ca) - and; शिबिरद्वारि (śibiradvāri) - at the gate of the camp; अतिष्ठताम् (atiṣṭhatām) - stood;]
(When Drona's son, the great-souled, had departed for the camp, Kṛpa and Kṛtavarmā stood at the gate of the camp.)
After Drona's noble son left for the camp, Kṛpa and Kṛtavarmā remained standing at the entrance.
अश्वत्थामा तु तौ दृष्ट्वा यत्नवन्तौ महारथौ। प्रहृष्टः शनकै राजन्निदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१०-८-६॥
aśvatthāmā tu tau dṛṣṭvā yatnavantau mahārathau। prahṛṣṭaḥ śanakai rājan idaṃ vacanam abravīt ॥10-8-6॥
[अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Aśvatthāman; तु (tu) - but; तौ (tau) - those two; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; यत्नवन्तौ (yatnavantau) - diligent; महारथौ (mahārathau) - great chariot-warriors; प्रहृष्टः (prahṛṣṭaḥ) - delighted; शनकैः (śanakaiḥ) - slowly; राजन् (rājan) - O king; इदं (idaṃ) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Aśvatthāman but those two having seen, diligent, great chariot-warriors, delighted, slowly, O king, this speech said:)
But Aśvatthāman, seeing those two great and diligent chariot-warriors, delighted, slowly said this speech, O king.
यत्तौ भवन्तौ पर्याप्तौ सर्वक्षत्रस्य नाशने। किं पुनर्योधशेषस्य प्रसुप्तस्य विशेषतः ॥१०-८-७॥
yattau bhavantau paryāptau sarvakṣatrasya nāśane। kiṃ punaryodhaśeṣasya prasuptasya viśeṣataḥ ॥10-8-7॥
[यत् (yat) - as; तौ (tau) - those two; भवन्तौ (bhavantau) - you both are; पर्याप्तौ (paryāptau) - sufficient; सर्वक्षत्रस्य (sarvakṣatrasya) - of all the Kṣatriyas; नाशने (nāśane) - for destruction; किं (kiṃ) - what; पुनः (punaḥ) - then; योधशेषस्य (yodhaśeṣasya) - of the remaining warriors; प्रसुप्तस्य (prasuptasya) - who are asleep; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(As you both are sufficient for the destruction of all the Kṣatriyas, what then (to speak) especially of the remaining warriors who are asleep?)
Since you both are enough to destroy all the Kṣatriyas, how much more so the remaining sleeping warriors?
अहं प्रवेक्ष्ये शिबिरं चरिष्यामि च कालवत्। यथा न कश्चिदपि मे जीवन्मुच्येत मानवः ॥१०-८-८॥
ahaṃ pravekṣye śibiraṃ cariṣyāmi ca kālavat। yathā na kaścidapi me jīvanmucyeta mānavaḥ ॥10-8-8॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; प्रवेक्ष्ये (pravekṣye) - shall enter; शिबिरं (śibiram) - camp; चरिष्यामि (cariṣyāmi) - shall move about; च (ca) - and; कालवत् (kāla-vat) - like Time (Death); यथा (yathā) - so that; न (na) - not; कश्चिदपि (kaścid api) - any one at all; मे (me) - by me; जीवन् (jīvan) - living; मुच्येत (mucyeta) - may escape; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man;]
(I shall enter the camp and move about like Time (Death), so that not even a single living man may escape from me.)
I will enter the camp and move about like Death itself, ensuring that not a single living man escapes me.
इत्युक्त्वा प्राविशद्द्रौणिः पार्थानां शिबिरं महत्। अद्वारेणाभ्यवस्कन्द्य विहाय भयमात्मनः ॥१०-८-९॥
ity uktvā prāviśad drauṇiḥ pārthānāṃ śibiraṃ mahat। advāreṇābhyavaskandya vihāya bhayam ātmanaḥ ॥10-8-9॥
[इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; प्राविशत् (prāviśat) - entered; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - the son of Droṇa; पार्थानाम् (pārthānām) - of the sons of Pṛthā (the Pāṇḍavas); शिबिरम् (śibiram) - camp; महत् (mahat) - great; अद्वारेण (advāreṇa) - by a side entrance; अभ्यवस्कन्द्य (abhyavaskandya) - having leapt in; विहाय (vihāya) - abandoning; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself;]
(Thus having spoken, the son of Droṇa entered the great camp of the sons of Pṛthā by a side entrance, having leapt in, abandoning fear of himself.)
Having said this, Droṇa's son entered the great camp of the Pāṇḍavas through a side entrance, casting aside his own fear.
स प्रविश्य महाबाहुरुद्देशज्ञश्च तस्य ह। धृष्टद्युम्नस्य निलयं शनकैरभ्युपागमत् ॥१०-८-१०॥
sa praviśya mahābāhuruddeśajñaś ca tasya ha | dhṛṣṭadyumnasya nilayaṃ śanakair abhyupāgamat ||10-8-10||
[स (sa) - he; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; महाबाहुः (mahābāhuḥ) - the mighty-armed; उद्देशज्ञः (uddeśajñaḥ) - knower of the place; च (ca) - and; तस्य (tasya) - his; ह (ha) - indeed; धृष्टद्युम्नस्य (dhṛṣṭadyumnasya) - of Dhṛṣṭadyumna; निलयम् (nilayam) - abode; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; अभ्युपागमत् (abhyupāgamat) - approached;]
(He, having entered, the mighty-armed, knower of the place, and his indeed, the abode of Dhṛṣṭadyumna, slowly approached.)
He, the mighty-armed and knower of the place, slowly entered and approached the abode of Dhṛṣṭadyumna.
ते तु कृत्वा महत्कर्म श्रान्ताश्च बलवद्रणे। प्रसुप्ता वै सुविश्वस्ताः स्वसैन्यपरिवारिताः ॥१०-८-११॥
te tu kṛtvā mahatkarma śrāntāś ca balavadraṇe। prasuptā vai suviśvastāḥ svasainyaparivāritāḥ ॥10-8-11॥
[ते (te) - they; तु (tu) - but; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; महत् (mahat) - great; कर्म (karma) - deed; श्रान्ताः (śrāntāḥ) - exhausted; च (ca) - and; बलवत् (balavat) - in a mighty; रणे (raṇe) - battle; प्रसुप्ताः (prasuptāḥ) - fallen asleep; वै (vai) - indeed; सुविश्वस्ताः (suviśvastāḥ) - completely at ease; स्व (sva) - their own; सैन्य (sainya) - army; परिवारिताः (parivāritāḥ) - surrounded;]
(They but having done a great deed, exhausted and in a mighty battle, indeed fell asleep, completely at ease, surrounded by their own army.)
But after performing a great feat and being exhausted in the fierce battle, they fell asleep, completely at ease, surrounded by their own army.
अथ प्रविश्य तद्वेश्म धृष्टद्युम्नस्य भारत। पाञ्चाल्यं शयने द्रौणिरपश्यत्सुप्तमन्तिकात् ॥१०-८-१२॥

(Then, having entered that mansion of Dhṛṣṭadyumna, O Bhārata, the son of Droṇa saw Pāñcālya sleeping on the bed nearby.)

क्षौमावदाते महति स्पर्ध्यास्तरणसंवृते। माल्यप्रवरसंयुक्ते धूपैश्चूर्णैश्च वासिते ॥१०-८-१३॥
kṣaumāvadāte mahati spardhyāstaraṇasaṃvṛte। mālyapravarasaṃyukte dhūpaiś cūrṇaiś ca vāsite ॥10-8-13॥
[क्षौम-अवदाते (kṣauma-avadāte) - with linen (cloth) spread out, white; महति (mahati) - great; स्पर्ध्या-आस्तरण-संवृते (spardhyā-āstaraṇa-saṃvṛte) - covered with a splendid carpet; माल्य-प्रवर-संयुक्ते (mālya-pravara-saṃyukte) - adorned with excellent garlands; धूपैः (dhūpaiḥ) - with incense; चूर्णैः च (cūrṇaiḥ ca) - and with powders; वासिते (vāsite) - perfumed;]
(With white linen spread out, covered with a splendid carpet, adorned with excellent garlands, perfumed with incense and powders.)
The place was spread with white linen, covered by a splendid carpet, decorated with the finest garlands, and perfumed with incense and fragrant powders.
तं शयानं महात्मानं विस्रब्धमकुतोभयम्। प्राबोधयत पादेन शयनस्थं महीपते ॥१०-८-१४॥
taṃ śayānaṃ mahātmānaṃ visrabdhamakutobhayam। prābodhayata pādena śayanasthaṃ mahīpate ॥10-8-14॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; शयानं (śayānam) - lying; महात्मानं (mahātmānam) - great-souled; विस्रब्धम् (visrabdham) - confident; अकुतोभयम् (akutobhayam) - fearless; प्राबोधयत् (prābodhayat) - awakened; पादेन (pādena) - with (his) foot; शयनस्थम् (śayanastham) - lying on the bed; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king;]
(Him lying, great-souled, confident, fearless, (he) awakened with (his) foot, lying on the bed, O king.)
O king, he awakened that great-souled, confident, and fearless one, who was lying on the bed, with his foot.
स बुद्ध्वा चरणस्पर्शमुत्थाय रणदुर्मदः। अभ्यजानदमेयात्मा द्रोणपुत्रं महारथम् ॥१०-८-१५॥
sa buddʰvā caraṇasparśam utthāya raṇadurmadaḥ। abhyajānad ameyātmā droṇaputraṃ mahāratham ॥10-8-15॥
[स (sa) - he; बुद्ध्वा (buddhvā) - having understood; चरणस्पर्शम् (caraṇasparśam) - touching the feet; उत्थाय (utthāya) - having risen; रणदुर्मदः (raṇadurmadaḥ) - arrogant in battle; अभ्यजानत् (abhyajānata) - approached; अमेयात्मा (ameyātmā) - of immeasurable soul; द्रोणपुत्रम् (droṇaputram) - the son of Droṇa; महारथम् (mahāratham) - the great chariot-warrior;]
(He, having understood, touching the feet, having risen, arrogant in battle, approached the son of Droṇa, the great chariot-warrior, of immeasurable soul.)
Having realized, he, proud in battle, rose after touching the feet and approached Droṇa's son, the mighty chariot-warrior of immeasurable spirit.
तमुत्पतन्तं शयनादश्वत्थामा महाबलः। केशेष्वालम्ब्य पाणिभ्यां निष्पिपेष महीतले ॥१०-८-१६॥
tam utpatantaṃ śayanād aśvatthāmā mahābalaḥ। keśeṣv ālambya pāṇibhyāṃ niṣpipeṣa mahītale ॥10-8-16॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उत्पतन्तम् (utpatantam) - rising; शयनात् (śayanāt) - from the bed; अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Aśvatthāmā; महाबलः (mahābalaḥ) - the mighty; केशेषु (keśeṣu) - by the hair; आलम्ब्य (ālambya) - having seized; पाणिभ्याम् (pāṇibhyām) - with (his) hands; निष्पिपेष (niṣpipeṣa) - crushed; महीतले (mahītale) - on the ground;]
(Aśvatthāmā, the mighty, having seized him rising from the bed by the hair with (his) hands, crushed (him) on the ground.)
The mighty Aśvatthāmā seized him by the hair as he rose from the bed and crushed him to the ground.
स बलात्तेन निष्पिष्टः साध्वसेन च भारत। निद्रया चैव पाञ्चाल्यो नाशकच्चेष्टितुं तदा ॥१०-८-१७॥
sa balāttena niṣpiṣṭaḥ sādhvasena ca bhārata। nidrayā caiva pāñcālyo nāśakacceṣṭituṃ tadā ॥10-8-17॥
[स (sa) - he; बलात् (balāt) - by force; तेन (tena) - by him; निष्पिष्टः (niṣpiṣṭaḥ) - crushed; साध्वसेन (sādhvasena) - by fear; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; निद्रया (nidrayā) - by sleep; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पाञ्चाल्यः (pāñcālyaḥ) - the son of Pāñcālī; न (na) - not; अशकत् (aśakat) - was able; चेष्टितुं (ceṣṭitum) - to move; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He, by force, by him crushed, by fear and, O Bhārata, by sleep and indeed, the son of Pāñcālī, not was able to move then.)
O Bhārata, at that time, the son of Pāñcālī, crushed by him with force, fear, and sleep, was unable to move.
तमाक्रम्य तदा राजन्कण्ठे चोरसि चोभयोः। नदन्तं विस्फुरन्तं च पशुमारममारयत् ॥१०-८-१८॥
tamākramya tadā rājan-kaṇṭhe corasi cobhayoḥ| nadantaṃ visphurantaṃ ca paśumāramamārayat||10-8-18||
[तम् (tam) - him; आक्रम्य (ākramya) - having attacked; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कण्ठे (kaṇṭhe) - on the neck; च (ca) - and; उरसि (urasi) - on the chest; च (ca) - and; उभयोः (ubhayoḥ) - on both; नदन्तं (nadantam) - roaring; विस्फुरन्तं (visphurantam) - struggling; च (ca) - and; पशुम् (paśum) - the animal; आरम् (āram) - at once; अमारयत् (amārayat) - killed;]
(Having attacked him then, O king, on the neck and on the chest, on both, roaring and struggling, the animal he killed at once.)
O king, then, having attacked him on both the neck and chest as he roared and struggled, he killed the animal at once.
तुदन्नखैस्तु स द्रौणिं नातिव्यक्तमुदाहरत्। आचार्यपुत्र शस्त्रेण जहि मा मा चिरं कृथाः ॥ त्वत्कृते सुकृताँल्लोकान्गच्छेयं द्विपदां वर ॥१०-८-१९॥
tudannakhaistu sa drauṇiṃ nātivyaktaṃudāharat। ācāryaputra śastreṇa jahi mā mā ciraṃ kṛthāḥ ॥ tvatkṛte sukṛtāṃllokāngaccheyaṃ dvipadāṃ vara ॥10-8-19॥
[तुदन्-अखैः-तु (tudan-akhaiḥ-tu) - with striking nails, indeed; सः (saḥ) - he; द्रौणिं (drauṇim) - Drona's son; न-अति-व्यक्तम्-उदाहरत् (na-ati-vyaktam-udāharat) - not very clearly spoke; आचार्य-पुत्र (ācārya-putra) - O teacher's son; शस्त्रेण (śastreṇa) - with weapon; जहि (jahi) - slay; मा-मा-चिरम्-कृथाः (mā-mā-ciram-kṛthāḥ) - do not, do not delay; त्वत्-कृते (tvat-kṛte) - for your sake; सुकृतान्-लोकान् (sukṛtān-lokān) - the virtuous worlds; गच्छेयम् (gaccheyam) - may I go; द्विपदां-वर (dvipadāṃ-vara) - O best of men;]
(With striking nails indeed, he did not very clearly speak to Drona's son: "O teacher's son, slay (me) with a weapon, do not, do not delay. For your sake, may I go to the virtuous worlds, O best of men.")
With his nails digging in, he spoke indistinctly to Drona's son: "O teacher's son, kill me with your weapon, do not delay. For your sake, O best of men, may I attain the virtuous worlds."
तस्याव्यक्तां तु तां वाचं संश्रुत्य द्रौणिरब्रवीत्। आचार्यघातिनां लोका न सन्ति कुलपांसन ॥ तस्माच्छस्त्रेण निधनं न त्वमर्हसि दुर्मते ॥१०-८-२०॥
tasyāvyaktāṃ tu tāṃ vācaṃ saṃśrutya drauṇir abravīt। ācāryaghātināṃ lokā na santi kulapāṃsana ॥ tasmāc chastreṇa nidhanaṃ na tvam arhasi durmate ॥10-8-20॥
[तस्य (tasya) - his; अव्यक्तां (avyaktām) - indistinct; तु (tu) - but; तां (tām) - that; वाचं (vācam) - speech; संश्रुत्य (saṃśrutya) - having heard; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Aśvatthāma; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; आचार्यघातिनां (ācāryaghātinām) - of teacher-slayers; लोका (lokā) - worlds; न (na) - not; सन्ति (santi) - exist; कुलपांसन (kulapāṃsana) - O defiler of the family; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; शस्त्रेण (śastreṇa) - by weapon; निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - death; न (na) - not; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अर्हसि (arhasi) - deserve; दुर्मते (durmate) - O evil-minded one;]
(But having heard his indistinct speech, Aśvatthāma said: 'Worlds do not exist for teacher-slayers, O defiler of the family. Therefore, you do not deserve death by weapon, O evil-minded one.')
But when Aśvatthāma heard his indistinct words, he said: 'Those who slay their teacher have no place in the worlds, O defiler of the family. Therefore, O evil-minded one, you do not deserve an honorable death by weapon.'
एवं ब्रुवाणस्तं वीरं सिंहो मत्तमिव द्विपम्। मर्मस्वभ्यवधीत्क्रुद्धः पादाष्ठीलैः सुदारुणैः ॥१०-८-२१॥

(Thus he, the hero, having slain him, then attacked others. Indeed, O king, here and there the great chariot-warriors, sleeping, trembling, and shaking, he subdued like animals in the sacrifice.)

ये त्वजाग्रत कौरव्य तेऽपि शब्देन मोहिताः। निरीक्ष्यमाणा अन्योन्यं द्रौणिं दृष्ट्वा प्रविव्यथुः ॥१०-८-४२॥
ye tv ajāgrata kauravya te'pi śabdena mohitāḥ. nirīkṣyamāṇā anyonyaṃ drauṇiṃ dṛṣṭvā pravivyathuḥ ॥10-8-42॥
[ये (ye) - who; तु (tu) - but; अजाग्रत (ajāgrata) - not-awake; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O Kaurava; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; शब्देन (śabdena) - by the sound; मोहिताः (mohitāḥ) - deluded; निरीक्ष्यमाणा (nirīkṣyamāṇā) - while observing; अन्योन्यं (anyonyaṃ) - each other; द्रौणिं (drauṇiṃ) - Drauni (Aśvatthāma); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; प्रविव्यथुः (pravivyathuḥ) - were agitated;]
(Those who, O Kaurava, were not awake, they also, deluded by the sound, while observing each other, having seen Drauni, were agitated.)
O Kaurava, those who were not alert were also deluded by the sound; seeing Drauni, they looked at each other and became agitated.
तद्रूपं तस्य ते दृष्ट्वा क्षत्रियाः शत्रुकर्शनाः। राक्षसं मन्यमानास्तं नयनानि न्यमीलयन् ॥१०-८-४३॥
tadrūpaṃ tasya te dṛṣṭvā kṣatriyāḥ śatrukarśanāḥ। rākṣasaṃ manyamānās taṃ nayanāni nyamīlayan ॥10-8-43॥
[तत् (tat) - that; रूपं (rūpaṃ) - form; तस्य (tasya) - his; ते (te) - your; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; क्षत्रियाः (kṣatriyāḥ) - the warriors; शत्रुकर्शनाः (śatrukarśanāḥ) - tormentors of enemies; राक्षसं (rākṣasaṃ) - demon-like; मन्यमानाः (manyamānāḥ) - thinking; तम् (tam) - him; नयनानि (nayanāni) - eyes; न्यमीलयन् (nyamīlayan) - closed;]
(Having seen that form of his, the warriors, tormentors of enemies, thinking him to be a demon, closed their eyes.)
When the warriors, who were tormentors of enemies, saw that form of his, they thought him to be a demon and closed their eyes.
स घोररूपो व्यचरत्कालवच्छिबिरे ततः। अपश्यद्द्रौपदीपुत्रानवशिष्टांश्च सोमकान् ॥१०-८-४४॥
sa ghorarūpo vyacarat kālavaj chibire tataḥ। apaśyad draupadī-putrān avaśiṣṭāṃś ca somakān ॥10-8-44॥
[स (sa) - he; घोररूपः (ghorarūpaḥ) - terrible-form; व्यचरत् (vyacarat) - moved about; कालवत् (kālavāt) - like Time (death); छिबिरे (chibire) - in the camp; ततः (tataḥ) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; द्रौपदीपुत्रान् (draupadī-putrān) - the sons of Draupadī; अवशिष्टान् (avaśiṣṭān) - remaining; च (ca) - and; सोमकान् (somakān) - the Somakas (allies of the Pandavas);]
(He, of terrible form, moved about like Time (death) in the camp then. He saw the sons of Draupadī and the remaining Somakas.)
He, in a terrifying form, roamed the camp like Death itself. Then he saw the sons of Draupadī and the surviving Somakas.
तेन शब्देन वित्रस्ता धनुर्हस्ता महारथाः। धृष्टद्युम्नं हतं श्रुत्वा द्रौपदेया विशां पते ॥ अवाकिरञ्शरव्रातैर्भारद्वाजमभीतवत् ॥१०-८-४५॥

(By that sound, the great chariot-warriors with bows in hand, frightened, having heard that Dhṛṣṭadyumna was slain, O lord of kings, the sons of Draupadī fearlessly showered Bhāradvāja (Aśvatthāma) with showers of arrows.)
O lord of kings, when the great chariot-warriors with bows in hand heard that Dhṛṣṭadyumna was slain by that sound, the sons of Draupadī, undaunted, showered Aśvatthāma (the son of Bhāradvāja) with volleys of arrows.
ततस्तेन निनादेन सम्प्रबुद्धाः प्रभद्रकाः। शिलीमुखैः शिखण्डी च द्रोणपुत्रं समार्दयन् ॥१०-८-४६॥
tatas tena ninādena samprabuddhāḥ prabhadrakāḥ। śilīmukhaiḥ śikhaṇḍī ca droṇaputraṃ samārdayan ॥10-8-46॥

(Then, by that sound, awakened, the Prabhadrakas, with arrows, Śikhaṇḍī and attacked the son of Droṇa.)
Then, awakened by that sound, the Prabhadrakas and Śikhaṇḍī attacked the son of Droṇa with arrows.
भारद्वाजस्तु तान्दृष्ट्वा शरवर्षाणि वर्षतः। ननाद बलवन्नादं जिघांसुस्तान्सुदुर्जयान् ॥१०-८-४७॥
bhāradvājastu tāndṛṣṭvā śaravarṣāṇi varṣataḥ। nanāda balavannādaṃ jighāṃsustānsudurjayān ॥10-8-47॥

(Bharadvaja but having seen them raining showers of arrows, roared a mighty sound, desiring to slay those very difficult to conquer.)
But Bharadvaja, seeing them raining showers of arrows, let out a mighty roar, wishing to slay those who were very difficult to conquer.
ततः परमसङ्क्रुद्धः पितुर्वधमनुस्मरन्। अवरुह्य रथोपस्थात्त्वरमाणोऽभिदुद्रुवे ॥१०-८-४८॥
tataḥ paramasaṅkruddhaḥ pitur vadham anusmaran। avaruhya rathopasthāt tvaramāṇo'bhidudruve ॥10-8-48॥

(Then, extremely enraged, remembering the killing of his father, having descended from the chariot seat, hastening, he rushed towards (him).)
Then, filled with intense rage and recalling his father's death, he quickly got down from the chariot and rushed forward.
सहस्रचन्द्रं विपुलं गृहीत्वा चर्म संयुगे। खड्गं च विपुलं दिव्यं जातरूपपरिष्कृतम् ॥ द्रौपदेयानभिद्रुत्य खड्गेन व्यचरद्बली ॥१०-८-४९॥
sahasracandraṃ vipulaṃ gṛhītvā carma saṃyuge। khaḍgaṃ ca vipulaṃ divyaṃ jātarūpapariṣkṛtam ॥ draupadeyānabhidrutya khaḍgena vyacaradbali ॥10-8-49॥
[सहस्रचन्द्रम् (sahasracandram) - thousand-moon-like; विपुलम् (vipulam) - large; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; चर्म (carma) - shield; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; खड्गम् (khaḍgam) - sword; च (ca) - and; विपुलम् (vipulam) - large; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; जातरूपपरिष्कृतम् (jātarūpapariṣkṛtam) - adorned with gold; द्रौपदेयान् (draupadeyān) - the sons of Draupadi; अभिद्रुत्य (abhidrutya) - having rushed at; खड्गेन (khaḍgena) - with the sword; व्यचरत् (vyacarat) - moved about; बली (balī) - the strong one;]
(Having taken a large, thousand-moon-like shield in battle, and a large, divine sword adorned with gold, having rushed at the sons of Draupadi, the strong one moved about with the sword.)
He took up a large shield shining like a thousand moons in the battle, and a great divine sword adorned with gold. Rushing at the sons of Draupadi, the mighty warrior moved about wielding his sword.
ततः स नरशार्दूलः प्रतिविन्ध्यं तमाहवे। कुक्षिदेशेऽवधीद्राजन्स हतो न्यपतद्भुवि ॥१०-८-५०॥
tataḥ sa naraśārdūlaḥ prativindhyaṃ tamāhave। kukṣideśe'vadhīdrājansa hato nyapatad bhuvi ॥10-8-50॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स (sa) - he; नरशार्दूलः (naraśārdūlaḥ) - tiger among men; प्रतिविन्ध्यं (prativindhyam) - Prativindhya; तम् (tam) - him; आहवे (āhave) - in battle; कुक्षिदेशे (kukṣideśe) - in the region of the abdomen; अवधीद् (avadhīt) - struck down; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सः (saḥ) - he; हतः (hataḥ) - slain; न्यपतत् (nyapatat) - fell down; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]
(Then he, the tiger among men, struck down Prativindhya in battle in the region of the abdomen, O king; he, being slain, fell down on the ground.)
Then that tiger among men struck Prativindhya in the abdomen during the battle, O king, and when he was slain, he fell to the ground.
प्रासेन विद्ध्वा द्रौणिं तु सुतसोमः प्रतापवान्। पुनश्चासिं समुद्यम्य द्रोणपुत्रमुपाद्रवत् ॥१०-८-५१॥
prāsena viddhvā drauṇiṃ tu sutasomaḥ pratāpavān। punaścāsiṃ samudyamya droṇaputramupādravat ॥10-8-51॥

(With the sword having struck Drona's son, but Sutasoma, the valiant, again and having raised the sword, attacked Drona's son.)
Sutasoma, the valiant, struck Drona's son with his sword, and then, raising his sword again, attacked Drona's son once more.
सुतसोमस्य सासिं तु बाहुं छित्त्वा नरर्षभः। पुनरभ्यहनत्पार्श्वे स भिन्नहृदयोऽपतत् ॥१०-८-५२॥
sutasomasya sāsiṃ tu bāhuṃ chittvā nararṣabhaḥ। punar abhyahanat pārśve sa bhinnahṛdayo'patat ॥10-8-52॥
[सुतसोमस्य (sutasomasya) - of Sutasoma; सासिं (sāsiṃ) - with sword; तु (tu) - but; बाहुं (bāhuṃ) - arm; छित्त्वा (chittvā) - having cut off; नरर्षभः (nararṣabhaḥ) - the bull among men; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अभ्यहनत् (abhyahanat) - struck; पार्श्वे (pārśve) - on the side; सः (saḥ) - he; भिन्नहृदयः (bhinna-hṛdayaḥ) - with a broken heart; अपतत् (apatat) - fell down;]
(The bull among men, having cut off the arm of Sutasoma with a sword, again struck him on the side; he, with a broken heart, fell down.)
The mighty warrior cut off Sutasoma's arm with his sword and struck him again on the side; with his heart broken, he fell to the ground.
नाकुलिस्तु शतानीको रथचक्रेण वीर्यवान्। दोर्भ्यामुत्क्षिप्य वेगेन वक्षस्येनमताडयत् ॥१०-८-५३॥
nākulistu śatānīko rathacakreṇa vīryavān। dorbhyām utkṣipya vegena vakṣasy enam atāḍayat ॥10-8-53॥
[नाकुलिः (nākuliḥ) - Nakuli; (the son of Nakula); तु (tu) - but; शतानीकः (śatānīkaḥ) - Śatānīka; (the warrior named Śatānīka); रथचक्रेण (rathacakreṇa) - with the chariot wheel; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - mighty; दोर्भ्याम् (dorbhyām) - with (his) two arms; उत्क्षिप्य (utkṣipya) - having lifted; वेगेन (vegena) - with force; वक्षसि (vakṣasi) - on the chest; एनम् (enam) - him; अताडयत् (atāḍayat) - struck;]
(But Nakuli Śatānīka, mighty, having lifted the chariot wheel with his two arms, with force, struck him on the chest.)
But the mighty Śatānīka, son of Nakula, lifted the chariot wheel with both arms and struck him forcefully on the chest.
अताडयच्छतानीकं मुक्तचक्रं द्विजस्तु सः। स विह्वलो ययौ भूमिं ततोऽस्यापाहरच्छिरः ॥१०-८-५४॥
atāḍayacchatānīkaṃ muktacakraṃ dvijastu saḥ। sa vihvalo yayau bhūmiṃ tato'syāpāharacchiraḥ ॥10-8-54॥

(Śatānīka, struck by the Brāhmaṇa with the released discus, he, distraught, went to the ground; then he (the Brāhmaṇa) removed his head.)
The Brāhmaṇa struck Śatānīka with the released discus. Śatānīka, overwhelmed, fell to the ground; then the Brāhmaṇa cut off his head.
श्रुतकर्मा तु परिघं गृहीत्वा समताडयत्। अभिद्रुत्य ततो द्रौणिं सव्ये स फलके भृशम् ॥१०-८-५५॥
śrutakarmā tu parighaṃ gṛhītvā samatāḍayat। abhidrutya tato drauṇiṃ savye sa phalake bhṛśam ॥10-8-55॥

(Śrutakarmā but, having taken the iron club, struck. Having rushed towards then Aśvatthāma on the left, he on the shield violently.)
Śrutakarmā, however, seized his iron club and struck. Then, rushing towards Aśvatthāma, he struck violently on the left side of his shield.
स तु तं श्रुतकर्माणमास्ये जघ्ने वरासिना। स हतो न्यपतद्भूमौ विमूढो विकृताननः ॥१०-८-५६॥
sa tu taṃ śrutakarmāṇamāsye jaghne varāsinā। sa hato nyapatadbhūmau vimūḍho vikṛtānanaḥ ॥10-8-56॥

(He but him who had performed Vedic rites in the mouth struck with a superior sword. He having been slain fell down on the ground, bewildered, with a distorted face.)

तेन शब्देन वीरस्तु श्रुतकीर्तिर्महाधनुः। अश्वत्थामानमासाद्य शरवर्षैरवाकिरत् ॥१०-८-५७॥

(By that sound, the hero Śrutakīrti, the great archer, having approached Aśvatthāman, covered (him) with showers of arrows.)
Hearing that sound, the heroic Śrutakīrti, a mighty archer, approached Aśvatthāman and showered him with arrows.
तस्यापि शरवर्षाणि चर्मणा प्रतिवार्य सः। सकुण्डलं शिरः कायाद्भ्राजमानमपाहरत् ॥१०-८-५८॥
tasyāpi śaravarṣāṇi carmaṇā prativārya saḥ। sakuṇḍalaṃ śiraḥ kāyādbhrajāmanamapāharat ॥10-8-58॥

(His also arrows-showers with (his) shield warding off he with earrings head from the body shining cut off.)

ततो भीष्मनिहन्ता तं सह सर्वैः प्रभद्रकैः। अहनत्सर्वतो वीरं नानाप्रहरणैर्बली ॥ शिलीमुखेन चाप्येनं भ्रुवोर्मध्ये समार्दयत् ॥१०-८-५९॥
tato bhīṣma-nihantā taṃ saha sarvaiḥ prabhadrakaiḥ। ahanatsarvato vīraṃ nānā-praharaṇairbalī ॥ śilīmukhena cāpyenaṃ bhruvor-madhye samārdayat ॥10-8-59॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; भीष्मनिहन्ता (bhīṣma-nihantā) - the slayer of Bhishma; तं (taṃ) - him; सह (saha) - with; सर्वैः (sarvaiḥ) - all; प्रभद्रकैः (prabhadrakaiḥ) - Prabhadrakas; अहत् (ahanat) - struck; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; वीरम् (vīram) - the hero; नानाप्रहरणैः (nānā-praharaṇaiḥ) - with various weapons; बली (balī) - the mighty one; शिलीमुखेन (śilīmukhena) - with a shilīmukha (arrow); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; एनम् (enam) - him; भ्रुवोः (bhruvoḥ) - between the eyebrows; मध्ये (madhye) - in the middle; समार्दयत् (samārdayat) - pierced; १०-८-५९ (10-8-59) - 10-8-59;]
(Then the slayer of Bhishma, along with all the Prabhadrakas, struck him, the mighty hero, from all sides with various weapons. And with a shilīmukha arrow, he also pierced him in the middle of the eyebrows.)

स तु क्रोधसमाविष्टो द्रोणपुत्रो महाबलः। शिखण्डिनं समासाद्य द्विधा चिच्छेद सोऽसिना ॥१०-८-६०॥
sa tu krodhasamāviṣṭo droṇaputro mahābalaḥ। śikhaṇḍinaṃ samāsādya dvidhā ciccheda so'sinā ॥10-8-60॥

(But he, the mighty son of Droṇa, filled with anger, having approached Śikhaṇḍin, cut him in two with the sword.)

शिखण्डिनं ततो हत्वा क्रोधाविष्टः परन्तपः। प्रभद्रकगणान्सर्वानभिदुद्राव वेगवान् ॥ यच्च शिष्टं विराटस्य बलं तच्च समाद्रवत् ॥१०-८-६१॥
śikhaṇḍinaṃ tato hatvā krodhāviṣṭaḥ parantapaḥ। prabhadrakagaṇān sarvān abhidudrāva vegavān॥ yac ca śiṣṭaṃ virāṭasya balaṃ tac ca samādravat॥10-8-61॥

(The earth became strewn, O lord, with very fierce, trampled, roaring, greatly distressed, and others crushed by elephants and horses.)

(Which was done to us, while (we were) asleep, by the demons of cruel deeds; indeed, due to the absence of the sons of Pṛthā, this slaughter was done to us.)

(Devoted to Brahman, truthful in speech, self-controlled, compassionate to all beings; nor does he kill one who is asleep, careless, has laid down arms, has joined palms, is running, or has loosened hair; Pārtha, Dhanañjaya, kills.)
Arjuna, known as Dhanañjaya and Pārtha, is devoted to Brahman, speaks the truth, is self-controlled, and compassionate to all beings; he does not kill anyone who is asleep, careless, has laid down their weapons, has joined their palms in supplication, is running away, or has loosened hair.
तदिदं नः कृतं घोरं रक्षोभिः क्रूरकर्मभिः। इति लालप्यमानाः स्म शेरते बहवो जनाः ॥१०-८-११९॥
tad idaṃ naḥ kṛtaṃ ghoraṃ rakṣobhiḥ krūrakarmabhiḥ। iti lālapyamānāḥ sma śerate bahavo janāḥ॥10-8-119॥

(That this terrible (deed) has been done to us by the demons of cruel deeds—thus, lamenting, indeed, many people lie (down).)

स्तनतां च मनुष्याणामपरेषां च कूजताम्। ततो मुहूर्तात्प्राशाम्यत्स शब्दस्तुमुलो महान् ॥१०-८-१२०॥
stanatāṃ ca manuṣyāṇāmapareṣāṃ ca kūjatām। tato muhūrtātp rāśāmyat sa śabdaḥ tumulo mahān ॥10-8-120॥

(As he had vowed, having performed that deed, the son of Droṇa, O lord, having taken the difficult path of his father, became free from fever.)

(Of such kind indeed that night, in the destruction of the Somakas, for those sleeping, for those careless, was very terrible.)

(Previously indeed, the son of Droṇa, this great chariot-warrior, did not do such a very great deed; why was he resolved in my son's victory?)
Earlier, this mighty chariot-warrior, the son of Droṇa, did not perform such a great feat; why was he so determined for my son's victory?
अथ कस्माद्धते क्षत्रे कर्मेदं कृतवानसौ। द्रोणपुत्रो महेष्वासस्तन्मे शंसितुमर्हसि ॥१०-८-१४५॥
atha kasmāddhate kṣatre karmedaṃ kṛtavānasau। droṇaputro maheṣvāsastanme śaṃsitumarhasi ॥10-8-145॥
[अथ (atha) - now; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - for what reason; धते (dhate) - in this (your) lineage; क्षत्रे (kṣatre) - in the kṣatriya (warrior) class; कर्म (karma) - action; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - has done; असौ (asau) - he; द्रोणपुत्रः (droṇaputraḥ) - the son of Droṇa; महेष्वासः (maheṣvāsaḥ) - the great archer; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; शंसितुम् (śaṃsitum) - to tell; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; ॥१०-८-१४५॥ (॥10-8-145॥) -;]
(Now, for what reason in this (your) lineage, in the kṣatriya class, has he performed this action? The son of Droṇa, the great archer—that, to me, you ought to tell.)
Now, please tell me for what reason the son of Droṇa, the great archer, performed this action in your kṣatriya lineage.

तेषां नूनं भयान्नासौ कृतवान्कुरुनन्दन। असांनिध्याद्धि पार्थानां केशवस्य च धीमतः ॥१०-८-१४६॥
teṣāṃ nūnaṃ bhayānnāsau kṛtavān kurunandana। asāṃnidhyāddhi pārthānāṃ keśavasya ca dhīmataḥ ॥10-8-146॥
[तेषां (teṣāṃ) - of them; नूनं (nūnaṃ) - certainly; भयात् (bhayāt) - out of fear; न (na) - not; असौ (asau) - he; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - has done; कुरुनन्दन (kurunandana) - O joy of the Kurus; असांनिध्यात् (asāṃnidhyāt) - due to absence; हि (hi) - indeed; पार्थानाम् (pārthānām) - of the sons of Pṛthā; केशवस्य (keśavasya) - of Keśava; च (ca) - and; धीमतः (dhīmataḥ) - of the wise one;]
(Certainly, out of fear of them, he did not do (this), O joy of the Kurus; indeed, it was due to the absence of the sons of Pṛthā and the wise Keśava.)
O joy of the Kurus, certainly he did not do this out of fear of them; rather, it was because the sons of Pṛthā and the wise Keśava were absent.
सात्यकेश्चापि कर्मेदं द्रोणपुत्रेण साधितम्। न हि तेषां समक्षं तान्हन्यादपि मरुत्पतिः ॥१०-८-१४७॥
sātyakeś cāpi karmedaṃ droṇaputreṇa sādhitam। na hi teṣāṃ samakṣaṃ tān hanyād api marutpatiḥ ॥10-8-147॥
[सात्यकेः (sātyakeḥ) - of Satyaki; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; कर्म (karma) - deed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; द्रोणपुत्रेण (droṇaputreṇa) - by the son of Droṇa; साधितम् (sādhitam) - accomplished; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; तेषां (teṣāṃ) - in their; समक्षं (samakṣaṃ) - presence; तान् (tān) - them; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - could slay; अपि (api) - even; मरुत्पतिः (marutpatiḥ) - the lord of the winds (Indra);]
(And this deed of Satyaki also was accomplished by the son of Droṇa. Indeed, not even the lord of the winds could slay them in their presence.)
The son of Droṇa accomplished this deed against Satyaki as well. Indeed, even Indra himself could not have slain them in their presence.
एतदीदृशकं वृत्तं राजन्सुप्तजने विभो। ततो जनक्षयं कृत्वा पाण्डवानां महात्ययम् ॥ दिष्ट्या दिष्ट्येति चान्योन्यं समेत्योचुर्महारथाः ॥१०-८-१४८॥
etad-īdṛśakaṃ vṛttaṃ rājan supta-jane vibho। tato janakṣayaṃ kṛtvā pāṇḍavānāṃ mahātyayam॥ diṣṭyā diṣṭyeti cānyonyaṃ sametyo curmahārathāḥ॥10-8-148॥
[एतद्-ईदृशकं (etad-īdṛśakaṃ) - such as this; वृत्तं (vṛttam) - event; occurrence; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सुप्त-जने (supta-jane) - while people were asleep; विभो (vibho) - O lord; ततः (tataḥ) - then; जन-क्षयम् (jana-kṣayam) - destruction of people; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having caused; पाण्डवानाम् (pāṇḍavānām) - of the Pāṇḍavas; महात्ययम् (mahātyayam) - great calamity; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; दिष्ट्या (diṣṭyā) - by fortune; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyam) - to each other; समेत्य (sametya) - having met; ऊचुः (ūcuḥ) - said; महारथाः (mahārathāḥ) - the great warriors;]
(Such an event as this, O king, occurred while the people were asleep, O lord. Then, having caused the destruction of people, a great calamity befell the Pāṇḍavas. 'By fortune, by fortune,' thus, having met each other, the great warriors said:)
O king, such a thing happened while everyone was asleep, O lord. Then, after causing the destruction of people, a great disaster befell the Pāṇḍavas. The great warriors, meeting each other, said, 'By fortune, by fortune.'
पर्यष्वजत्ततो द्रौणिस्ताभ्यां च प्रतिनन्दितः। इदं हर्षाच्च सुमहदाददे वाक्यमुत्तमम् ॥१०-८-१४९॥
paryaṣvajattato drauṇistābhyāṃ ca pratinanditaḥ। idaṃ harṣācca sumahadādade vākyamuttamam ॥10-8-149॥
[पर्यष्वजत् (paryaṣvajat) - embraced; ततः (tataḥ) - then; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Drona's son (Aśvatthāman); ताभ्यां (tābhyām) - by them; च (ca) - and; प्रतिनन्दितः (pratinanditaḥ) - greeted; इदं (idaṃ) - this; हर्षात् (harṣāt) - from joy; च (ca) - and; सुमहत् (sumahat) - very great; आददे (ādade) - uttered; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
(Then Drona's son embraced them and, being greeted by them, from great joy uttered these excellent words.)
Then Aśvatthāman, Drona's son, embraced them, and after being warmly greeted, he joyfully spoke these excellent words.
पाञ्चाला निहताः सर्वे द्रौपदेयाश्च सर्वशः। सोमका मत्स्यशेषाश्च सर्वे विनिहता मया ॥१०-८-१५०॥
pāñcālā nihatāḥ sarve draupadeyāś ca sarvaśaḥ. somakā matsyaśeṣāś ca sarve vinihatā mayā ॥10-8-150॥
[पाञ्चाला (pāñcālā) - the Pāñcālas; निहताः (nihatāḥ) - have been slain; सर्वे (sarve) - all; द्रौपदेयाः (draupadeyāḥ) - the sons of Draupadī; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; सोमका (somakā) - the Somakas; मत्स्यशेषाः (matsyaśeṣāḥ) - the remaining Matsyas; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; विनिहता (vinihatā) - have been destroyed; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(The Pāñcālas have all been slain, and the sons of Draupadī entirely; the Somakas and all the remaining Matsyas have all been destroyed by me.)
All the Pāñcālas and the sons of Draupadī have been completely slain; the Somakas and all the remaining Matsyas have also been destroyed by me.
इदानीं कृतकृत्याः स्म याम तत्रैव माचिरम्। यदि जीवति नो राजा तस्मै शंसामहे प्रियम् ॥१०-८-१५१॥
idānīṃ kṛtakṛtyāḥ sma yāma tatraiva māciram। yadi jīvati no rājā tasmai śaṃsāmahe priyam ॥10-8-151॥
[इदानीं (idānīṃ) - now; कृतकृत्याः (kṛtakṛtyāḥ) - having accomplished our duty; स्म (sma) - indeed; याम (yāma) - let us go; तत्रैव (tatraiva) - there itself; मा (mā) - not; चिरम् (ciram) - for long; यदि (yadi) - if; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; नः (naḥ) - our; राजा (rājā) - king; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; शंसामहे (śaṃsāmahe) - let us report; प्रियम् (priyam) - the good news;]
(Now, having accomplished our duty indeed, let us go there itself, not for long. If our king lives, let us report the good news to him.)
Now that we have fulfilled our duty, let us go there at once and not delay. If our king is alive, let us convey the good news to him.
