स्तुतं स्तुत्यं स्तूयमानममोघं चर्मवाससम्। विलोहितं नीलकण्ठमपृक्तं दुर्निवारणम् ॥१०-७-६॥

imāṃ cāpy āpadaṃ ghorāṃ tarāmy adya sudustarām। sarvabhūtopahāreṇa yakṣye'haṃ śucinā śucim ॥10-7-12॥

(This terrible calamity, which is very difficult to cross, I will cross today. By offering all beings, I will worship the pure one with purity.)

इति तस्य व्यवसितं ज्ञात्वा त्यागात्मकं मनः। पुरस्तात्काञ्चनी वेदिः प्रादुरासीन्महात्मनः ॥१०-७-१३॥

तस्यां वेद्यां तदा राजंश्चित्रभानुरजायत। द्यां दिशो विदिशः खं च ज्वालाभिरभिपूरयन् ॥१०-७-१४॥

(In that altar then, O king, Citrabhanu (the Sun) was born, filling the sky, the directions, the intermediate directions, and the space with flames.)

काकवक्त्राः प्लवमुखाः शुकवक्त्रास्तथैव च। महाजगरवक्त्राश्च हंसवक्त्राः सितप्रभाः ॥१०-७-१७॥
kākavaktrāḥ plavamukhāḥ śukavaktrās tathaiva ca। mahājagaravaktrāś ca haṃsavaktrāḥ sitaprabhāḥ ॥10-7-17॥
[काकवक्त्राः (kākavaktrāḥ) - those with crow faces; प्लवमुखाः (plavamukhāḥ) - those with the faces of aquatic birds; शुकवक्त्राः (śukavaktrāḥ) - those with parrot faces; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; महाजगरवक्त्राः (mahājagaravaktrāḥ) - those with the faces of great serpents; च (ca) - and; हंसवक्त्राः (haṃsavaktrāḥ) - those with swan faces; सितप्रभाः (sitaprabhāḥ) - having white radiance;]
(Those with crow faces, those with the faces of aquatic birds, those with parrot faces, likewise and those with the faces of great serpents and those with swan faces, having white radiance.)

दार्वाघाटमुखाश्चैव चाषवक्त्राश्च भारत। कूर्मनक्रमुखाश्चैव शिशुमारमुखास्तथा ॥१०-७-१८॥
dārvāghāṭamukhāścaiva cāṣavaktrāśca bhārata। kūrmanakramukhāścaiva śiśumāramukhāstathā ॥10-7-18॥
[दार्व-अघाट-मुखाः (dārva-aghāṭa-mukhāḥ) - those with wooden mortar faces; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; चाष-वक्त्राः (cāṣa-vaktrāḥ) - those with heron faces; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; कूर्म-नक्र-मुखाः (kūrma-nakra-mukhāḥ) - those with tortoise and crocodile faces; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शिशुमार-मुखाः (śiśumāra-mukhāḥ) - those with porpoise faces; तथा (tathā) - also;]
(Those with wooden mortar faces and those with heron faces, O Bhārata, those with tortoise and crocodile faces and those with porpoise faces also.)
O Bhārata, there were also beings with faces like wooden mortars, herons, tortoises, crocodiles, and porpoises.
महामकरवक्त्राश्च तिमिवक्त्रास्तथैव च। हरिवक्त्राः क्रौञ्चमुखाः कपोतेभमुखास्तथा ॥१०-७-१९॥
mahāmakaravaktrāś ca timivaktrās tathaiva ca। harivaktrāḥ krauñcamukhāḥ kapotebhamukhās tathā ॥10-7-19॥
[महामकरवक्त्राः (mahāmakaravaktrāḥ) - with great makara (sea-monster) faces; च (ca) - and; तिमिवक्त्राः (timivaktrāḥ) - with whale faces; तथैव (tathaiva) - likewise; च (ca) - and; हरिवक्त्राः (harivaktrāḥ) - with lion faces; क्रौञ्चमुखाः (krauñcamukhāḥ) - with heron faces; कपोतेभमुखाः (kapotebhamukhāḥ) - with pigeon and elephant faces; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(With great makara (sea-monster) faces and whale faces likewise, and lion faces, heron faces, pigeon and elephant faces so.)

पारावतमुखाश्चैव मद्गुवक्त्रास्तथैव च। पाणिकर्णाः सहस्राक्षास्तथैव च शतोदराः ॥१०-७-२०॥
pārāvatamukhāś caiva madguvaktrās tathaiva ca। pāṇikarṇāḥ sahasrākṣās tathaiva ca śatodarāḥ ॥10-7-20॥

निर्मांसाः कोकवक्त्राश्च श्येनवक्त्राश्च भारत। तथैवाशिरसो राजन्नृक्षवक्त्राश्च भीषणाः ॥१०-७-२१॥
nirmāṃsāḥ kokavaktrāś ca śyenavaktrāś ca bhārata। tathaivāśiraso rājann ṛkṣavaktrāś ca bhīṣaṇāḥ ॥10-7-21॥

(Having obtained eightfold prosperity, those who do not go to astonishment, of whom the Lord Hara is always astonished by the actions.)
Those who, even after attaining eightfold prosperity, are not amazed—such people are those whose actions always astonish Lord Hara (Śiva).
मनोवाक्कर्मभिर्भक्तैर्नित्यमाराधितश्च यैः। मनोवाक्कर्मभिर्भक्तान्पाति पुत्रानिवौरसान् ॥१०-७-४२॥
manovāk-karmabhir bhaktair nityam ārādhitaś ca yaiḥ। manovāk-karmabhir bhaktān pāti putrān iv aurasān ॥10-7-42॥
[मना (manaḥ) - mind; वाक् (vāk) - speech; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; भक्तैः (bhaktaiḥ) - by devotees; नित्यम् (nityam) - always; आराधितः (ārādhitaḥ) - worshipped; च (ca) - and; यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; मना (manaḥ) - mind; वाक् (vāk) - speech; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; भक्तान् (bhaktān) - devotees; पाति (pāti) - protects; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; इव (iva) - like; औरसान् (aurasān) - born from one's own body;]
(By those devotees by mind, speech, and actions, who always worship (Him), He protects the devotees by mind, speech, and actions, like sons born from one's own body.)
He, who is always worshipped by devotees through mind, speech, and actions, protects such devotees just as one would protect one's own sons born from oneself.
पिबन्तोऽसृग्वसास्त्वन्ये क्रुद्धा ब्रह्मद्विषां सदा। चतुर्विंशात्मकं सोमं ये पिबन्ति च नित्यदा ॥१०-७-४३॥
pibanto'sṛg-vasās tv anye kruddhā brahma-dviṣāṃ sadā। catur-viṃśātmakam somaṃ ye pibanti ca nityadā ॥10-7-43॥

(Drinking, blood-clad, but others, angry, of the haters of Brahman, always. The Soma consisting of twenty-four, who drink and always.)
But others, always angry and blood-clad, who are haters of Brahman, always drink the Soma consisting of twenty-four.
श्रुतेन ब्रह्मचर्येण तपसा च दमेन च। ये समाराध्य शूलाङ्कं भवसायुज्यमागताः ॥१०-७-४४॥
śrutena brahmacaryeṇa tapasā ca damena ca। ye samārādhya śūlāṅkaṃ bhavasāyujyamāgatāḥ ॥10-7-44॥

(By the Veda, by celibacy, by austerity and by self-control, those who, having worshipped well the one marked with the trident, have attained union with Bhava (Śiva).)

यैरात्मभूतैर्भगवान्पार्वत्या च महेश्वरः। सह भूतगणान्भुङ्क्ते भूतभव्यभवत्प्रभुः ॥१०-७-४५॥

(By whom, with his own beings, the Lord Maheshvara, together with Pārvatī, enjoys the hosts of beings, the Lord of past, future, and present.)
Maheshvara, accompanied by Pārvatī and his own beings, enjoys the company of all beings as the Lord of past, present, and future.
नानाविचित्रहसितक्ष्वेडितोत्क्रुष्टगर्जितैः। संनादयन्तस्ते विश्वमश्वत्थामानमभ्ययुः ॥१०-७-४६॥
nānā-vicitra-hasita-kṣveḍita-utkruṣṭa-garjitaiḥ। saṃnādayantaḥ te viśvam aśvatthāmānam abhyayuḥ ॥10-7-46॥
[नाना (nānā) - various; विचित्र (vicitra) - wonderful; हसित (hasita) - laughter; क्ष्वेडित (kṣveḍita) - whistling; उत्क्रुष्ट (utkruṣṭa) - loud; गर्जितैः (garjitaiḥ) - roarings; संनादयन्तः (saṃnādayantaḥ) - resounding; ते (te) - they; विश्वम् (viśvam) - the whole world; अश्वत्थामानम् (aśvatthāmānam) - Aśvatthāman; अभ्ययुः (abhyayuḥ) - approached;]
(With various wonderful laughter, whistling, loud roarings, resounding, they approached Aśvatthāman, making the whole world resound.)

संस्तुवन्तो महादेवं भाः कुर्वाणाः सुवर्चसः। विवर्धयिषवो द्रौणेर्महिमानं महात्मनः ॥१०-७-४७॥

जिज्ञासमानास्तत्तेजः सौप्तिकं च दिदृक्षवः। भीमोग्रपरिघालातशूलपट्टिशपाणयः ॥ घोररूपाः समाजग्मुर्भूतसङ्घाः समन्ततः ॥१०-७-४८॥

(Those who would cause fear even to the three worlds by their very sight, looking at them, the mighty one did not feel distress.)
The mighty one, even when looking at those who could instill fear in the three worlds by their mere presence, did not feel any distress.
अथ द्रौणिर्धनुष्पाणिर्बद्धगोधाङ्गुलित्रवान्। स्वयमेवात्मनात्मानमुपहारमुपाहरत् ॥१०-७-५०॥
atha drauṇir dhanuṣ-pāṇir baddha-godhāṅgulitravān। svayam eva ātmanā ātmānam upahāram upāharat ॥10-7-50॥

(Then Drauṇi, with bow in hand, wearing a leather finger-guard, himself indeed, by himself, offered himself as an offering.)

धनूंषि समिधस्तत्र पवित्राणि शिताः शराः। हविरात्मवतश्चात्मा तस्मिन्भारत कर्मणि ॥१०-७-५१॥

[धनूंषि (dhanuṃṣi) - bows; समिधः (samidhaḥ) - fuel-sticks; तत्र (tatra) - there; पवित्राणि (pavitrāṇi) - purifiers; शिताः (śitāḥ) - sharp; शराः (śarāḥ) - arrows; हविः (haviḥ) - offering; आत्मवतः (ātmavataḥ) - of the self-possessed; च (ca) - and; आत्मा (ātmā) - self; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; कर्मणि (karmaṇi) - in the act;]
(Bows, fuel-sticks there, purifiers, sharp arrows, offering, of the self-possessed, and self, in that, O Bhārata, in the act.)
O Bhārata, in that act, bows are the fuel-sticks, arrows are the sharp purifiers, the offering is the self of the self-possessed.
ततः सौम्येन मन्त्रेण द्रोणपुत्रः प्रतापवान्। उपहारं महामन्युरथात्मानमुपाहरत् ॥१०-७-५२॥
tataḥ saumyena mantreṇa droṇaputraḥ pratāpavān। upahāraṃ mahāmanyur athātmānam upāharat ॥10-7-52॥

(In you, all beings (exist); in all beings, you indeed are. The oneness of the qualities of the primordials indeed abides in you.)

सर्वभूताशय विभो हविर्भूतमुपस्थितम्। प्रतिगृहाण मां देव यद्यशक्याः परे मया ॥१०-७-५७॥
sarvabhūtāśaya vibho havirbhūtam-upasthitam। pratigṛhāṇa māṃ deva yady-aśakyāḥ pare mayā ॥10-7-57॥

(O indweller of all beings, O all-pervading one, having become the offering, presented, accept me, O Lord, that which is impossible by others, by me.)
O Lord, indweller of all beings, all-pervading one, I have presented myself as the offering. Please accept me, O Lord, for what is impossible for others has been accomplished by me.
इत्युक्त्वा द्रौणिरास्थाय तां वेदीं दीप्तपावकाम्। सन्त्यक्तात्मा समारुह्य कृष्णवर्त्मन्युपाविशत् ॥१०-७-५८॥
ity uktvā drauṇir āsthāya tāṃ vedīṃ dīptapāvakām। santyaktātmā samāruhya kṛṣṇavartmany upāviśat ॥10-7-58॥

(Thus having spoken, the son of Droṇa, having ascended that altar blazing with fire, having renounced his life, having mounted, sat down on the black path.)

तमूर्ध्वबाहुं निश्चेष्टं दृष्ट्वा हविरुपस्थितम्। अब्रवीद्भगवान्साक्षान्महादेवो हसन्निव ॥१०-७-५९॥

(Having seen him with raised arms, motionless, and the oblation presented, the venerable Mahadeva, directly, said, as if smiling.)

सत्यशौचार्जवत्यागैस्तपसा नियमेन च। क्षान्त्या भक्त्या च धृत्या च बुद्ध्या च वचसा तथा ॥१०-७-६०॥
satyaśaucārjavatyāgaistapasā niyamena ca| kṣāntyā bhaktyā ca dhṛtyā ca buddhyā ca vacasā tathā ॥10-7-60॥

(As is proper, I have been worshipped by Kṛṣṇa, whose actions are effortless. Therefore, there is no one more beloved to me than Kṛṣṇa.)
Kṛṣṇa, whose actions are effortless, has worshipped me properly. Therefore, there is no one dearer to me than Kṛṣṇa.
कुर्वता तस्य संमानं त्वां च जिज्ञासता मया। पाञ्चालाः सहसा गुप्ता मायाश्च बहुशः कृताः ॥१०-७-६२॥

[कुर्वता (kurvatā) - by doing; तस्य (tasya) - his; संमानं (saṁmānaṁ) - honor; त्वां (tvāṁ) - you; च (ca) - and; जिज्ञासता (jijñāsatā) - by wishing to know; मया (mayā) - by me; पाञ्चालाः (pāñcālāḥ) - the Pāñcālas; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; गुप्ता (guptā) - protected; मायाः (māyāḥ) - magical arts; च (ca) - and; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; कृताः (kṛtāḥ) - were done;]
(By doing his honor and by wishing to know you by me, the Pāñcālas were suddenly protected and magical arts were done many times.)
By honoring him and out of my desire to know you, I have often protected the Pāñcālas suddenly and performed many magical feats.
कृतस्तस्यैष संमानः पाञ्चालान्रक्षता मया। अभिभूतास्तु कालेन नैषामद्यास्ति जीवितम् ॥१०-७-६३॥
kṛtastasyaiṣa saṃmānaḥ pāñcālān rakṣatā mayā। abhibhūtāstu kālena naiṣām adyāsti jīvitam ॥10-7-63॥
[कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; तस्य (tasya) - for him; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; संमानः (saṃmānaḥ) - honor; पाञ्चालान् (pāñcālān) - the Pāñcālas; रक्षता (rakṣatā) - by protecting; मया (mayā) - by me; अभिभूताः (abhibhūtāḥ) - overpowered; तु (tu) - but; कालेन (kālena) - by time; न (na) - not; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; अद्य (adya) - today; अस्ति (asti) - there is; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
(This honor for him was done by me by protecting the Pāñcālas. But overpowered by time, today there is no life of these.)
This honor was done for him by me in protecting the Pāñcālas. But now, overpowered by time, none of them remain alive today.
एवमुक्त्वा महेष्वासं भगवानात्मनस्तनुम्। आविवेश ददौ चास्मै विमलं खड्गमुत्तमम् ॥१०-७-६४॥
evam-uktvā maheṣvāsaṃ bhagavān-ātmanaḥ-tanum। āviveśa dadau ca asmai vimalaṃ khaḍgam-uttamam ॥10-7-64॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; महेष्वासम् (maheṣvāsaṃ) - to the great archer; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the Lord; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - his own; तनुम् (tanum) - body; आविवेश (āviveśa) - entered; ददौ (dadau) - gave; च (ca) - and; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; विमलम् (vimalaṃ) - pure; खड्गम् (khaḍgam) - sword; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent;]
(Thus having spoken to the great archer, the Lord entered his own body and gave to him a pure and excellent sword.)

अथाविष्टो भगवता भूयो जज्वाल तेजसा। वर्ष्मवांश्चाभवद्युद्धे देवसृष्टेन तेजसा ॥१०-७-६५॥
athāviṣṭo bhagavatā bhūyo jajvāla tejasā। varṣmavāṃścābhavadyuddhe deva-sṛṣṭena tejasā ॥10-7-65॥
[अथ (atha) - then; आविष्टः (āviṣṭaḥ) - possessed; भगवता (bhagavatā) - by the Lord; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; जज्वाल (jajvāla) - blazed; तेजसा (tejasā) - with splendor; वर्ष्मवान् (varṣmavān) - the mighty-bodied; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; देवसृष्टेन (deva-sṛṣṭena) - created by the gods; तेजसा (tejasā) - with splendor;]
(Then, possessed by the Lord, again he blazed with splendor. The mighty-bodied one also became (so) in battle with the splendor created by the gods.)

तमदृश्यानि भूतानि रक्षांसि च समाद्रवन्। अभितः शत्रुशिबिरं यान्तं साक्षादिवेश्वरम् ॥१०-७-६६॥
tamadṛśyāni bhūtāni rakṣāṃsi ca samādravan। abhitaḥ śatruśibiraṃ yāntaṃ sākṣādiveśvaram ॥10-7-66॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अदृश्यानि (adṛśyāni) - invisible; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; रक्षांसि (rakṣāṃsi) - rākṣasas (demons); च (ca) - and; समाद्रवन् (samādravan) - ran together; अभितः (abhitaḥ) - around; शत्रुशिबिरम् (śatruśibiram) - enemy camp; यान्तम् (yāntam) - approaching; साक्षात् (sākṣāt) - directly; इव (iva) - as if; ईश्वरम् (īśvaram) - the Lord;]
(Invisible beings and rākṣasas ran together around him, who was approaching the enemy camp, as if (he were) the Lord Himself.)
Invisible beings and demons rushed about him as he approached the enemy camp, as if he were the Lord Himself.
