ते हत्वा सर्वपाञ्चालान्द्रौपदेयांश्च सर्वशः। अगच्छन्सहितास्तत्र यत्र दुर्योधनो हतः ॥१०-९-१॥
te hatvā sarvapāñcālāndraupadeyāṃś ca sarvaśaḥ। agacchansahitās tatra yatra duryodhano hataḥ ॥10-9-1॥
[ते (te) - they; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; सर्वपाञ्चालान् (sarvapāñcālān) - all the Pāñcālas; द्रौपदेयान् (draupadeyān) - the sons of Draupadī; च (ca) - and; सर्वशः (sarvaśaḥ) - entirely; अगच्छन् (agacchan) - they went; सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; तत्र (tatra) - there; यत्र (yatra) - where; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; हतः (hataḥ) - was slain;]
(They, having slain all the Pāñcālas and the sons of Draupadī entirely, went together there where Duryodhana was slain.)
Having killed all the Pāñcālas and the sons of Draupadī, they all together went to the place where Duryodhana lay slain.
गत्वा चैनमपश्यंस्ते किञ्चित्प्राणं नराधिपम्। ततो रथेभ्यः प्रस्कन्द्य परिवव्रुस्तवात्मजम् ॥१०-९-२॥
gatvā cainam apaśyaṃs te kiñcit prāṇaṃ narādhipam। tato rathebhyaḥ praskandya parivavrur tavātmajam ॥10-9-2॥

(Having gone, and him they saw, some life in the king. Then from the chariots, having jumped down, they surrounded your son.)
After going there, they saw that the king still had some life left. Then, getting down from their chariots, they surrounded your son.
तं भग्नसक्थं राजेन्द्र कृच्छ्रप्राणमचेतसम्। वमन्तं रुधिरं वक्त्रादपश्यन्वसुधातले ॥१०-९-३॥
taṃ bhagnasakthaṃ rājendra kṛcchraprāṇamacetasam। vamantaṃ rudhiraṃ vaktrādapaśyan vasudhātale ॥10-9-3॥

वृतं समन्ताद्बहुभिः श्वापदैर्घोरदर्शनैः। शालावृकगणैश्चैव भक्षयिष्यद्भिरन्तिकात् ॥१०-९-४॥
vṛtaṃ samantād bahubhiḥ śvā-padaiḥ ghora-darśanaiḥ। śālā-vṛka-gaṇaiś caiva bhakṣayiṣyadbhir antikāt ॥10-9-4॥

निवारयन्तं कृच्छ्रात्ताञ्श्वापदान्सञ्चिखादिषून्। विवेष्टमानं मह्यां च सुभृशं गाढवेदनम् ॥१०-९-५॥
nivārayantaṃ kṛcchrāttāñśvāpadān sañcikhādiśūn। viveṣṭamānaṃ mahyāṃ ca subhṛśaṃ gāḍhavedanam ॥10-9-5॥

तं शयानं महात्मानं भूमौ स्वरुधिरोक्षितम्। हतशिष्टास्त्रयो वीराः शोकार्ताः पर्यवारयन् ॥ अश्वत्थामा कृपश्चैव कृतवर्मा च सात्वतः ॥१०-९-६॥

(Him lying, the great-souled, on the ground, moistened with his own blood, the three surviving heroes, afflicted with grief, surrounded: Aśvatthāmā, Kṛpa, and indeed Kṛtavarmā, the Sātvata.)
The three surviving heroes—Aśvatthāmā, Kṛpa, and Kṛtavarmā—grief-stricken, surrounded the great-souled one lying on the ground, soaked in his own blood.
तैस्त्रिभिः शोणितादिग्धैर्निःश्वसद्भिर्महारथैः। शुशुभे संवृतो राजा वेदी त्रिभिरिवाग्निभिः ॥१०-९-७॥
tais tribhiḥ śoṇitādigdhair niḥśvasadbhir mahārathaiḥ। śuśubhe saṁvṛto rājā vedī tribhir ivāgnibhiḥ॥10-9-7॥

ते तं शयानं सम्प्रेक्ष्य राजानमतथोचितम्। अविषह्येन दुःखेन ततस्ते रुरुदुस्त्रयः ॥१०-९-८॥
te taṃ śayānaṃ samprekṣya rājānam atathocitam। aviṣahyenaduḥkhena tataste rurudus trayaḥ ॥10-9-8॥

(They, having seen him (the king) lying in an unbefitting state, with unbearable grief, then those three wept.)
When they saw the king lying there in such an unbefitting state, the three of them were overcome with unbearable grief and wept.
ततस्ते रुधिरं हस्तैर्मुखान्निर्मृज्य तस्य ह। रणे राज्ञः शयानस्य कृपणं पर्यदेवयन् ॥१०-९-९॥
tataste rudhiraṃ hastairmukhānnirmṛjya tasya ha। raṇe rājñaḥ śayānasya kṛpaṇaṃ paryadevayan ॥10-9-9॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ते (te) - they; रुधिरम् (rudhiram) - blood; हस्तैः (hastaiḥ) - with (their) hands; मुखात् (mukhāt) - from (his) face; निर्मृज्य (nirmṛjya) - wiping; तस्य (tasya) - his; ह (ha) - indeed; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; राज्ञः (rājñaḥ) - of the king; शयानस्य (śayānasya) - lying (dead/unconscious); कृपणम् (kṛpaṇam) - pitifully; पर्यदेवयन् (paryadevayan) - lamented;]
(Then they, wiping the blood from his face with their hands, indeed, in battle, of the king lying (dead), pitifully lamented.)

न दैवस्यातिभारोऽस्ति यदयं रुधिरोक्षितः। एकादशचमूभर्ता शेते दुर्योधनो हतः ॥१०-९-१०॥
na daivasyātibhāro'sti yad ayaṃ rudhira-okṣitaḥ| ekādasa-camū-bhartā śete duryodhanaḥ hataḥ ॥10-9-10॥
[न (na) - not; दैवस्य (daivasya) - of fate; अतिभारः (atibhāraḥ) - excessive burden; अस्ति (asti) - is; यत् (yat) - that; अयम् (ayam) - this; रुधिरोक्षितः (rudhira-okṣitaḥ) - smeared with blood; एकादश (ekādaśa) - eleven; चमूभर्ता (camu-bhartā) - army-leader; शेते (śete) - lies; दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; हतः (hataḥ) - slain;]
(There is not an excessive burden on fate that this one, smeared with blood, the leader of eleven armies, Duryodhana, lies slain.)
It is not too much for fate that Duryodhana, the leader of eleven armies, lies here slain and covered in blood.
पश्य चामीकराभस्य चामीकरविभूषिताम्। गदां गदाप्रियस्येमां समीपे पतितां भुवि ॥१०-९-११॥
paśya cāmīkarābhasya cāmīkara-vibhūṣitām। gadāṃ gadāpriyasya-imāṃ samīpe patitāṃ bhuvi ॥10-9-11॥
[पश्य (paśya) - see; चामीकराभस्य (cāmīkarābhasya) - of one who resembles gold; चामीकरविभूषिताम् (cāmīkara-vibhūṣitām) - adorned with gold; गदाम् (gadām) - mace; गदाप्रियस्य (gadāpriyasya) - of the lover of the mace; इमाम् (imām) - this; समीपे (samīpe) - near; पतिताम् (patitām) - fallen; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground;]

Look at this mace, adorned with gold, belonging to the one who loves the mace, lying here on the ground.
इयमेनं गदा शूरं न जहाति रणे रणे। स्वर्गायापि व्रजन्तं हि न जहाति यशस्विनम् ॥१०-९-१२॥
iyam enaṃ gadā śūraṃ na jahāti raṇe raṇe। svargāyāpi vrajantaṃ hi na jahāti yaśasvinam ॥10-9-12॥
[इयम् (iyam) - this (feminine); एनम् (enaṃ) - him; गदा (gadā) - mace; शूरम् (śūram) - hero; न (na) - not; जहाति (jahāti) - abandons; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; स्वर्गाय (svargāya) - for heaven; अपि (api) - even; व्रजन्तम् (vrajantam) - one going; हि (hi) - indeed; न (na) - not; जहाति (jahāti) - abandons; यशस्विनम् (yaśasvinam) - the glorious one;]
(This mace does not abandon this hero in battle after battle; even when going to heaven, indeed, it does not abandon the glorious one.)
This mace never leaves this hero in any battle; even when he goes to heaven, it does not forsake the glorious one.
पश्येमां सह वीरेण जाम्बूनदविभूषिताम्। शयानां शयने धर्मे भार्यां प्रीतिमतीमिव ॥१०-९-१३॥
paśyemāṃ saha vīreṇa jāmbūnadavibhūṣitām। śayānāṃ śayane dharme bhāryāṃ prītimatīmiva ॥10-9-13॥

यो वै मूर्धावसिक्तानामग्रे यातः परन्तपः। स हतो ग्रसते पांसून्पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥१०-९-१४॥
yo vai mūrdhāvasiktānām agre yātaḥ parantapaḥ। sa hato grasate pāṃsūn paśya kālasya paryayam ॥10-9-14॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; मूर्धावसिक्तानाम् (mūrdhāvasiktānām) - of those who have been anointed on the head; अग्रे (agre) - in front; यातः (yātaḥ) - has gone; परन्तपः (parantapaḥ) - O scorcher of foes; सः (saḥ) - he; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; ग्रसते (grasate) - devours; पांसून् (pāṃsūn) - dust; पश्य (paśya) - see; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; पर्ययम् (paryayam) - the change;]
(Who indeed has gone in front of those anointed on the head, O scorcher of foes, he, being killed, devours dust. See the change of time.)
O scorcher of foes, whoever has gone ahead of those anointed on the head, he, when slain, eats dust. See how time brings change.
येनाजौ निहता भूमावशेरत पुरा द्विषः। स भूमौ निहतः शेते कुरुराजः परैरयम् ॥१०-९-१५॥
yenājau nihatā bhūmāvaśerata purā dviṣaḥ। sa bhūmau nihataḥ śete kururājaḥ parairayam ॥10-9-15॥
[येन (yena) - by whom; अजौ (ajau) - in battle; निहता (nihataḥ) - were slain; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; अशेरत (aśerata) - lay; पुरा (purā) - formerly; द्विषः (dviṣaḥ) - enemies; सः (saḥ) - he; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; निहतः (nihataḥ) - slain; शेते (śete) - lies; कुरुराजः (kururājaḥ) - the king of the Kurus; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; अयम् (ayam) - this;]
(By whom in battle the enemies were slain and formerly lay on the ground, he, the king of the Kurus, now lies slain on the ground by others, this one.)
He who once slew his enemies in battle and made them lie on the ground, this king of the Kurus now lies slain on the ground himself, struck down by others.
भयान्नमन्ति राजानो यस्य स्म शतसङ्घशः। स वीरशयने शेते क्रव्याद्भिः परिवारितः ॥१०-९-१६॥
bhayān namanti rājāno yasya sma śatasaṅghaśaḥ। sa vīraśayane śete kravyādbhiḥ parivāritaḥ ॥10-9-16॥
[भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; नमन्ति (namanti) - bow; राजानः (rājānaḥ) - kings; यस्य (yasya) - of whom; स्म (sma) - indeed; शतसङ्घशः (śatasaṅghaśaḥ) - by hundreds of groups; सः (saḥ) - he; वीरशयने (vīraśayane) - on the hero's bed (battlefield); शेते (śete) - lies; क्रव्याद्भिः (kravyādbhiḥ) - by flesh-eaters; परिवारितः (parivāritaḥ) - surrounded;]
(From fear, kings by hundreds of groups bow to whom indeed; he lies on the hero's bed (battlefield), surrounded by flesh-eaters.)
He, whom even hundreds of kings bow to out of fear, now lies on the battlefield, surrounded by flesh-eating beasts.
उपासत नृपाः पूर्वमर्थहेतोर्यमीश्वरम्। धिक्सद्यो निहतः शेते पश्य कालस्य पर्ययम् ॥१०-९-१७॥
upāsata nṛpāḥ pūrvam artha-hetor yam īśvaram। dhik sadyo nihataḥ śete paśya kālasya paryayam ॥10-9-17॥
[उपासत (upāsata) - worshipped; नृपाः (nṛpāḥ) - kings; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - formerly; अर्थहेतोः (artha-hetoḥ) - for the sake of wealth; यम् (yam) - Yama; ईश्वरम् (īśvaram) - the lord; धिक् (dhik) - shame; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; निहतः (nihataḥ) - killed; शेते (śete) - lies; पश्य (paśya) - see; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; पर्ययम् (paryayam) - the turn;]
(The kings formerly worshipped Yama, the lord, for the sake of wealth. Shame! He now lies killed immediately. See the turn of time.)
The kings once worshipped Yama, the lord of death, for the sake of wealth. But now, shame! He lies slain in an instant. Behold the turn of fate and time.

आहुस्त्वां राजशार्दूल मुख्यं सर्वधनुष्मताम्। धनाध्यक्षोपमं युद्धे शिष्यं सङ्कर्षणस्य ह ॥१०-९-१९॥
āhus tvāṃ rājaśārdūla mukhyaṃ sarvadhanuṣmatām। dhanādhyakṣopamaṃ yuddhe śiṣyaṃ saṅkarṣaṇasya ha ॥10-9-19॥
[आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; राजशार्दूल (rājaśārdūla) - O tiger among kings; मुख्यम् (mukhyam) - chief; सर्वधनुष्मताम् (sarvadhanuṣmatām) - of all bowmen; धनाध्यक्षोपमम् (dhanādhyakṣopamam) - like the lord of wealth; युद्धे (yuddhe) - in battle; शिष्यं (śiṣyam) - disciple; सङ्कर्षणस्य (saṅkarṣaṇasya) - of Sankarshana; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(They say you, O tiger among kings, are the chief of all bowmen, like the lord of wealth in battle, the disciple of Sankarshana indeed.)
They say that you, O best of kings, are the foremost among all archers, like the lord of wealth in battle, and indeed the disciple of Sankarshana.
कथं विवरमद्राक्षीद्भीमसेनस्तवानघ। बलिनः कृतिनो नित्यं स च पापात्मवान्नृप ॥१०-९-२०॥
kathaṃ vivaram adrākṣīd bhīmasenas tavānagha। balinaḥ kṛtino nityaṃ sa ca pāpātmavān nṛpa ॥10-9-20॥
[कथं (katham) - how; विवरम् (vivaram) - the cave; अद्राक्षीत् (adrākṣīt) - did see; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; तव (tava) - your; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; बलिनः (balinaḥ) - of the strong; कृतिनः (kṛtinaḥ) - of the accomplished; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; स (sa) - he; च (ca) - and; पापात्मवान् (pāpātmavān) - wicked-souled; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(How did Bhīmasena see the cave, O sinless one? Of the strong and accomplished, he always, and also the wicked-souled, O king.)
O sinless one, how did Bhīmasena discover the cave? Among the strong and accomplished, he always stood out, and so did the wicked-souled, O king.
कालो नूनं महाराज लोकेऽस्मिन्बलवत्तरः। पश्यामो निहतं त्वां चेद्भीमसेनेन संयुगे ॥१०-९-२१॥
kālo nūnaṃ mahārāja loke'smin balavattaraḥ। paśyāmo nihataṃ tvāṃ ced bhīmasenena saṃyuge ॥10-9-21॥
[कालः (kālaḥ) - time; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; बलवत्तरः (balavattaraḥ) - stronger; पश्यामः (paśyāmaḥ) - we see; निहतम् (nihatam) - slain; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; चेत् (cet) - if; भीमसेनेन (bhīmasenena) - by Bhimasena; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle;]
(Time indeed, O great king, is stronger in this world; we see you slain by Bhimasena in battle, if (it is so).)
O great king, truly, time is the most powerful force in this world; if it is so, we see you slain by Bhimasena in battle.

वयमेव त्रयो राजन्गच्छन्तं परमां गतिम्। यद्वै त्वां नानुगच्छामस्तेन तप्स्यामहे वयम् ॥१०-९-३९॥

Indeed, O best of Kurus, we shall live in sorrow on this earth; for us, deprived by you, O king, how can there be peace, how can there be happiness?
गत्वैतांस्तु महाराज समेत्य त्वं महारथान्। यथाश्रेष्ठं यथाज्येष्ठं पूजयेर्वचनान्मम ॥१०-९-४२॥
gatvaitāṃstu mahārāja sametya tvaṃ mahārathān। yathāśreṣṭhaṃ yathājyeṣṭhaṃ pūjayervacanān mama ॥10-9-42॥
[गत्व (gatvā) - having gone; एतान् (etān) - these; तु (tu) - but; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; समेत्य (sametya) - having assembled; त्वम् (tvam) - you; महारथान् (mahārathān) - great chariot-warriors; यथा (yathā) - as; श्रेष्ठम् (śreṣṭham) - the best; यथा (yathā) - as; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - the eldest; पूजयेः (pūjayeḥ) - you should honor; वचनात् (vacanāt) - by the word; मम (mama) - of mine;]
(But having gone to these, O great king, and having assembled the great chariot-warriors, you should honor them as the best and as the eldest, according to my word.)
O great king, after going to these and gathering the great chariot-warriors, you should honor them according to my instructions, giving precedence to the best and the eldest.
आचार्यं पूजयित्वा च केतुं सर्वधनुष्मताम्। हतं मयाद्य शंसेथा धृष्टद्युम्नं नराधिप ॥१०-९-४३॥
ācāryaṃ pūjayitvā ca ketuṃ sarvadhanuṣmatām। hataṃ mayādya śaṃsethā dhṛṣṭadyumnaṃ narādhipa ॥10-9-43॥

tathā pūrvagatān anyān svargaṃ pārthivasattamān। asmad-vākyāt pariṣvajya pṛcchethās tvam anāmayam ॥10-9-45॥

(Thus, having embraced the other best of kings who have gone before to heaven, from my words, you should ask them about their well-being.)
In this way, from my words, you should embrace the other noble kings who have departed to heaven and inquire about their well-being.
इत्येवमुक्त्वा राजानं भग्नसक्थमचेतसम्। अश्वत्थामा समुद्वीक्ष्य पुनर्वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१०-९-४६॥
ityevamuktvā rājānaṃ bhagnasakthamacetasaṃ। aśvatthāmā samudvīkṣya punar vacanam abravīt ॥10-9-46॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; राजानम् (rājānam) - the king; भग्नसक्थम् (bhagnasaktham) - with broken thigh; अचेतसम् (acetasaṃ) - unconscious; अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Aśvatthāmā; समुद्वीक्ष्य (samudvīkṣya) - having looked at; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; वचनम् (vacanam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(Thus having spoken to the king, who was unconscious with a broken thigh, Aśvatthāmā, having looked (at him), again spoke words.)
After saying this to the king, who was unconscious and had a broken thigh, Aśvatthāmā looked at him and spoke again.
दुर्योधन जीवसि चेद्वाचं श्रोत्रसुखां शृणु। सप्त पाण्डवतः शेषा धार्तराष्ट्रास्त्रयो वयम् ॥१०-९-४७॥

(Duryodhana, if you are alive, hear words pleasing to the ear: Of the sons of Pandu, seven remain; of the sons of Dhritarashtra, we three.)
Duryodhana, if you are still alive, listen to these pleasant words: Seven sons of Pandu remain, and of the sons of Dhritarashtra, only we three are left.
ते चैव भ्रातरः पञ्च वासुदेवोऽथ सात्यकिः। अहं च कृतवर्मा च कृपः शारद्वतस्तथा ॥१०-९-४८॥

(They and indeed the five brothers, Vasudeva and Satyaki, I and Kritavarma and Kripa, the son of Sharadvat, also.)
They, along with the five brothers, Vasudeva (Krishna), Satyaki, myself, Kritavarma, and Kripa, the son of Sharadvat, were also present.
द्रौपदेया हताः सर्वे धृष्टद्युम्नस्य चात्मजाः। पाञ्चाला निहताः सर्वे मत्स्यशेषं च भारत ॥१०-९-४९॥
draupadeyā hatāḥ sarve dhṛṣṭadyumnasya cātmajāḥ। pāñcālā nihatāḥ sarve matsyaśeṣaṃ ca bhārata ॥10-9-49॥

(All the sons of Draupadī and the sons of Dhṛṣṭadyumna have been killed; all the Pāñcālas have been slain, and the remnant of the Matsyas too, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, all the sons of Draupadī, the sons of Dhṛṣṭadyumna, all the Pāñcālas, and the remaining Matsyas have been killed.
कृते प्रतिकृतं पश्य हतपुत्रा हि पाण्डवाः। सौप्तिके शिबिरं तेषां हतं सनरवाहनम् ॥१०-९-५०॥
kṛte pratikṛtaṃ paśya hataputrā hi pāṇḍavāḥ। sauptike śibiraṃ teṣāṃ hataṃ sanaravāhanam ॥10-9-50॥
[कृते (kṛte) - when done; प्रतिकृतं (pratikṛtam) - retaliation; पश्य (paśya) - see; हतपुत्राः (hataputrāḥ) - whose sons are slain; हि (hi) - indeed; पाण्डवाः (pāṇḍavāḥ) - the Pāṇḍavas; सौप्तिके (sauptike) - in the night attack; शिबिरं (śibiram) - camp; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; हतं (hatam) - slain; सनरवाहनम् (sanaravāhanam) - with men and vehicles;]
(When retaliation is done, see, the Pāṇḍavas, whose sons are slain, indeed, in the night attack, their camp, with men and vehicles, is slain.)
See, when retaliation is done, the Pāṇḍavas, whose sons were bereaved of their sons, have had their camp, along with men and vehicles, destroyed in the night attack.
मया च पापकर्मासौ धृष्टद्युम्नो महीपते। प्रविश्य शिबिरं रात्रौ पशुमारेण मारितः ॥१०-९-५१॥
mayā ca pāpakarmāsau dhṛṣṭadyumno mahīpate। praviśya śibiraṃ rātrau paśumāreṇa māritaḥ ॥10-9-51॥
[मया (mayā) - by me; च (ca) - and; पापकर्मा (pāpakarmā) - wicked-deed-doer; असौ (asau) - this; धृष्टद्युम्नः (dhṛṣṭadyumnaḥ) - Dhṛṣṭadyumna; महीपते (mahīpate) - O king; प्रविश्य (praviśya) - having entered; शिबिरं (śibiram) - camp; रात्रौ (rātrau) - at night; पशुमारेण (paśumāreṇa) - with the weapon for animal slaughter; मारितः (māritaḥ) - was killed;]
(By me and this wicked-deed-doer Dhṛṣṭadyumna, O king, having entered the camp at night, was killed with the weapon for animal slaughter.)
O king, it was I who killed this wicked Dhṛṣṭadyumna at night in the camp, using the weapon meant for animal slaughter.
दुर्योधनस्तु तां वाचं निशम्य मनसः प्रियाम्। प्रतिलभ्य पुनश्चेत इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१०-९-५२॥
duryodhanas tu tāṃ vācaṃ niśamya manasaḥ priyām। pratilabhya punaś cet idaṃ vacanam abravīt ॥10-9-52॥
[दुर्योधनः (duryodhanaḥ) - Duryodhana; तु (tu) - but; ताम् (tām) - that; वाचम् (vācam) - speech; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; मनसः (manasaḥ) - to the mind; प्रियाम् (priyām) - dear; प्रतिलभ्य (pratilabhya) - having regained; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; चेत (cet) - consciousness; इदम् (idam) - this; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(But Duryodhana, having heard that dear speech to his mind, having regained consciousness again, said this speech.)
But Duryodhana, after hearing those words that were dear to his heart and regaining his composure, spoke as follows.
न मेऽकरोत्तद्गाङ्गेयो न कर्णो न च ते पिता। यत्त्वया कृपभोजाभ्यां सहितेनाद्य मे कृतम् ॥१०-९-५३॥
na me'karottadgāṅgeyo na karṇo na ca te pitā। yattvayā kṛpabhojābhyāṃ sahitenādya me kṛtam ॥10-9-53॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - by me; अकरोत् (akarot) - was done; तत् (tat) - that; गाङ्गेयः (gāṅgeyaḥ) - Gāṅgeya (Bhīṣma); न (na) - not; कर्णः (karṇaḥ) - Karṇa; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; पिता (pitā) - father; यत् (yat) - which; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कृपभोजाभ्याम् (kṛpabhojābhyām) - by Kṛpa and Bhoja (Aśvatthāma and Kṛtavarman, the two warriors); सहितेन (sahitena) - together with; अद्य (adya) - today; मे (me) - to me; कृतम् (kṛtam) - has been done;]
(Not by me was that done by Gāṅgeya, not Karṇa, nor your father; which by you, together with Kṛpa and Bhoja, today to me has been done.)
Neither I, nor Bhīṣma, nor Karṇa, nor your father did what you, along with Kṛpa and Bhoja, have done to me today.
स चेत्सेनापतिः क्षुद्रो हतः सार्धं शिखण्डिना। तेन मन्ये मघवता सममात्मानमद्य वै ॥१०-९-५४॥
sa cetsenāpatiḥ kṣudro hataḥ sārdhaṃ śikhaṇḍinā। tena manye maghavatā samamātmānamadya vai ॥10-9-54॥
[स (sa) - he; चेत् (cet) - if; सेनापतिः (senāpatiḥ) - the commander; क्षुद्रः (kṣudraḥ) - low; हतः (hataḥ) - killed; सार्धं (sārdham) - together with; शिखण्डिना (śikhaṇḍinā) - by Śikhaṇḍin; तेन (tena) - by him; मन्ये (manye) - I think; मघवता (maghavatā) - with Indra; समम् (samam) - equal; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(He, if the commander, low, killed, together with Śikhaṇḍin, by him, I think, with Indra, equal, himself, today, indeed.)
If the commander, though low, has been killed together with Śikhaṇḍin, then today I think he has made himself equal to Indra indeed.
स्वस्ति प्राप्नुत भद्रं वः स्वर्गे नः सङ्गमः पुनः। इत्येवमुक्त्वा तूष्णीं स कुरुराजो महामनाः ॥ प्राणानुदसृजद्वीरः सुहृदां शोकमादधत् ॥१०-९-५५॥
svasti prāpnuta bhadraṃ vaḥ svarge naḥ saṅgamaḥ punaḥ। ityevamuktvā tūṣṇīṃ sa kururājo mahāmanāḥ ॥ prāṇānudasṛjadvīraḥ suhṛdāṃ śokamādadhat ॥10-9-55॥
[स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; प्राप्नुत (prāpnuta) - may you attain; भद्रं (bhadraṃ) - good; वः (vaḥ) - to you; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; नः (naḥ) - our; सङ्गमः (saṅgamaḥ) - meeting; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; तूष्णीं (tūṣṇīm) - silently; स (sa) - he; कुरुराजः (kururājaḥ) - the king of the Kurus; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - great-minded; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - life-breaths; उदसृजत् (udasṛjat) - released; वीरः (vīraḥ) - the hero; सुहृदां (suhṛdāṃ) - of friends; शोकम् (śokam) - grief; आदधत् (ādadhat) - causing;]
(Well-being may you attain, good to you, in heaven our meeting again. Thus having said, silently, he, the king of the Kurus, great-minded, released life-breaths, the hero, causing grief of friends.)
"May you attain well-being and good, may we meet again in heaven." Having said this, the great-minded king of the Kurus fell silent and released his life, causing grief to his friends.
तथेति ते परिष्वक्ताः परिष्वज्य च तं नृपम्। पुनः पुनः प्रेक्षमाणाः स्वकानारुरुहू रथान् ॥१०-९-५६॥
tatheti te pariṣvaktāḥ pariṣvajya ca taṃ nṛpam। punaḥ punaḥ prekṣamāṇāḥ svakān āruḥū rathān ॥10-9-56॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; इति (iti) - so; ते (te) - they; परिष्वक्ताः (pariṣvaktāḥ) - embraced; परिष्वज्य (pariṣvajya) - having embraced; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; नृपम् (nṛpam) - king; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; प्रेक्षमाणाः (prekṣamāṇāḥ) - looking at; स्वकान् (svakān) - their own; आरुरुहू (āruḥū) - ascended; रथान् (rathān) - chariots;]
(Thus, so, they embraced, having embraced, and, him, the king; again and again, looking at, their own, ascended, chariots.)
Thus, having embraced the king again and again, they looked at him and then ascended their own chariots.
इत्येवं तव पुत्रस्य निशम्य करुणां गिरम्। प्रत्यूषकाले शोकार्तः प्राधावं नगरं प्रति ॥१०-९-५७॥
ityevaṃ tava putrasya niśamya karuṇāṃ giram। pratyūṣakāle śokārtaḥ prādhāvaṃ nagaraṃ prati ॥10-9-57॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this way; तव (tava) - your; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - son's; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; करुणां (karuṇām) - piteous; गिरम् (giram) - speech; प्रत्यूषकाले (pratyūṣakāle) - at dawn; शोकार्तः (śokārtaḥ) - afflicted by grief; प्राधावम् (prādhāvam) - I ran; नगरं (nagaraṃ) - to the city; प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Thus, in this way, having heard your son's piteous speech, at dawn, afflicted by grief, I ran towards the city.)

तव पुत्रे गते स्वर्गं शोकार्तस्य ममानघ। ऋषिदत्तं प्रनष्टं तद्दिव्यदर्शित्वमद्य वै ॥१०-९-५८॥
tava putre gate svargaṃ śokārtasya mamānagha। ṛṣidattaṃ pranaṣṭaṃ taddivyadarśitvamadya vai ॥10-9-58॥
[तव (tava) - your; पुत्रे (putre) - son; गते (gate) - having gone; स्वर्गं (svargaṃ) - to heaven; शोकार्तस्य (śokārtasya) - of the one afflicted with grief; मम (mama) - my; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; ऋषिदत्तं (ṛṣidattaṃ) - given by the sage; प्रनष्टं (pranaṣṭaṃ) - lost; तत् (tat) - that; दिव्यदर्शित्वम् (divyadarśitvam) - divine vision; अद्य (adya) - today; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Your son having gone to heaven, my divine vision given by the sage, O sinless one, is lost today indeed, of the one afflicted with grief.)
O sinless one, since your son has gone to heaven, my divine vision given by the sage is lost today, as I am afflicted with grief.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

इति श्रुत्वा स नृपतिः पुत्रज्ञातिवधं तदा। निःश्वस्य दीर्घमुष्णं च ततश्चिन्तापरोऽभवत् ॥१०-९-५९॥
iti śrutvā sa nṛpatiḥ putrajñātivadhaṃ tadā। niḥśvasya dīrghamuṣṇaṃ ca tataścintāparo'bhavat ॥10-9-59॥
[इति (iti) - thus; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सः (saḥ) - he; नृपतिः (nṛpatiḥ) - the king; पुत्र (putra) - son; ज्ञाति (jñāti) - kinsmen; वधं (vadhaṃ) - slaying; तदा (tadā) - then; निःश्वस्य (niḥśvasya) - having sighed; दीर्घम् (dīrgham) - long; उष्णं (uṣṇam) - hot; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; चिन्तापरः (cintāparaḥ) - absorbed in thought; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Thus having heard, he, the king, the slaying of son and kinsmen then, having sighed long and hot, and thereafter became absorbed in thought.)
Having heard this, the king, upon learning of the killing of his son and kinsmen, sighed deeply and hotly, and then became absorbed in thought.
