Pancharatra-Ext and Core: Yudhishthira asks Krishna as to why Ashwatthama was able to cause such destruction, including the killing of the very powerful Dhrushtadyumna. Krishna responds by narrating how Ashwatthama sought refuge under Lord Shiva and Lord Shiva's glory.

(When all the armies had been slain in the night battle by those three chariots, lamenting, King Yudhishthira said this to Dasharha (Krishna).)
When all the armies had been destroyed in the night battle by those three charioteers, the grieving King Yudhishthira spoke these words to Dasharha (Krishna).
कथं नु कृष्ण पापेन क्षुद्रेणाक्लिष्टकर्मणा। द्रौणिना निहताः सर्वे मम पुत्रा महारथाः ॥१०-१७-२॥

(How indeed, O Kṛṣṇa, by the sinful, petty, effortless-acting (one), by the son of Droṇa, were all my sons, the great warriors, killed?)
O Kṛṣṇa, how is it that all my sons, the great warriors, have been killed by the sinful and petty son of Droṇa, whose actions were effortless?
तथा कृतास्त्रा विक्रान्ताः सहस्रशतयोधिनः। द्रुपदस्यात्मजाश्चैव द्रोणपुत्रेण पातिताः ॥१०-१७-३॥
tathā kṛtāstrā vikrāntāḥ sahasraśatayodhinaḥ। drupadasyātmajāścaiva droṇaputreṇa pātitāḥ ॥10-17-3॥

(Thus, having used weapons, the valiant warriors of thousands and hundreds, the sons of Drupada also indeed, were slain by the son of Drona.)

यस्य द्रोणो महेष्वासो न प्रादादाहवे मुखम्। तं जघ्ने रथिनां श्रेष्ठं धृष्टद्युम्नं कथं नु सः ॥१०-१७-४॥

(He whose Droṇa, the great archer, did not give a face-to-face encounter in battle—how indeed did he kill that best of chariot-warriors, Dhṛṣṭadyumna?)
How did he, whose Droṇa, the great archer, did not face him in battle, manage to kill Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the best of chariot-warriors?
किं नु तेन कृतं कर्म तथायुक्तं नरर्षभ। यदेकः शिबिरं सर्वमवधीन्नो गुरोः सुतः ॥१०-१७-५॥
kiṁ nu tena kṛtaṁ karma tathāyuktaṁ nararṣabha। yad ekaḥ śibiraṁ sarvam avadhīn no guroḥ sutaḥ ॥10-17-5॥

(What indeed was that deed thus performed by him, O best of men, that alone the son of our teacher destroyed the entire camp?)
O best of men, what was that act performed by him, by which the son of our teacher alone destroyed our entire camp?

नूनं स देवदेवानामीश्वरेश्वरमव्ययम्। जगाम शरणं द्रौणिरेकस्तेनावधीद्बहून् ॥१०-१७-६॥
nūnaṃ sa devadevānām īśvareśvaram avyayam। jagāma śaraṇaṃ drauṇir ekas tenāavadhīd bahūn ॥10-17-6॥
[नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; स (sa) - he; देवदेवानाम् (devadevānām) - of the gods of gods; ईश्वरेश्वरम् (īśvareśvaram) - the lord of lords; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - imperishable; जगाम (jagāma) - went; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; द्रौणिः (drauṇiḥ) - Aśvatthāman; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; तेन (tena) - by him; अवधीद् (avadhīt) - killed; बहून् (bahūn) - many;]
(Indeed, he, Aśvatthāman, alone went for refuge to the imperishable lord of lords of the gods of gods; by him, many were killed.)
Indeed, Aśvatthāman alone sought refuge in the imperishable lord of lords, the supreme among the gods; by his act, many were slain.
प्रसन्नो हि महादेवो दद्यादमरतामपि। वीर्यं च गिरिशो दद्याद्येनेन्द्रमपि शातयेत् ॥१०-१७-७॥
prasanno hi mahādevo dadyādamaratām api। vīryaṃ ca giriśo dadyād yena indram api śātayet ॥10-17-7॥

(If Mahadeva is pleased, he may indeed grant even immortality; and Girisha may grant strength by which one may even surpass Indra.)
If Mahadeva (Shiva) is pleased, he can grant even immortality; and Girisha (Shiva) can bestow such strength that one could even surpass Indra.
वेदाहं हि महादेवं तत्त्वेन भरतर्षभ। यानि चास्य पुराणानि कर्माणि विविधान्युत ॥१०-१७-८॥
vedāhaṃ hi mahādevaṃ tattvena bharatarṣabha। yāni cāsya purāṇāni karmāṇi vividhānyuta ॥10-17-8॥
[वेद (veda) - I know; अहम् (aham) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; महादेवं (mahādevaṃ) - Mahadeva; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - in essence; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O best of the Bharatas; यानि (yāni) - which; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - his; पुराणानि (purāṇāni) - ancient; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - deeds; विविधानि (vividhāni) - various; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(I know indeed Mahadeva in essence, O best of the Bharatas; and which are his ancient various deeds indeed.)
O best of the Bharatas, I truly know Mahadeva in essence, as well as his various ancient deeds.
आदिरेष हि भूतानां मध्यमन्तश्च भारत। विचेष्टते जगच्चेदं सर्वमस्यैव कर्मणा ॥१०-१७-९॥
ādireṣa hi bhūtānāṃ madhyamantaśca bhārata। viceṣṭate jagaccedaṃ sarvamasyaiva karmaṇā ॥10-17-9॥
[आदि (ādi) - beginning; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; मध्यम् (madhyam) - middle; अन्तः (antaḥ) - end; च (ca) - and; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; विचेष्टते (viceṣṭate) - acts; जगत् (jagat) - the world; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अस्य (asya) - by his; एव (eva) - only; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - action;]
(This indeed is the beginning, middle, and end of beings, O Bhārata; and this whole world acts only by his action.)
O Bhārata, he is indeed the beginning, the middle, and the end of all beings; and this entire world moves solely by his action.
एवं सिसृक्षुर्भूतानि ददर्श प्रथमं विभुः। पितामहोऽब्रवीच्चैनं भूतानि सृज माचिरम् ॥१०-१७-१०॥
evaṃ sisṛkṣur bhūtāni dadarśa prathamaṃ vibhuḥ। pitāmaho 'bravīc cainaṃ bhūtāni sṛja māciram ॥10-17-10॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सिसृक्षुः (sisṛkṣuḥ) - desiring to create; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; प्रथमं (prathamaṃ) - first; विभुः (vibhuḥ) - the all-pervading one; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire; अब्रवीत् ('abravīt) - said; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - to him; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; सृज (sṛja) - create; मा (mā) - do not; अचिरम् (aciram) - delay; ॥१०-१७-१०॥ (॥10-17-10॥) - ;]
(Thus, desiring to create beings, the all-pervading one first saw. The grandsire said to him, "Create beings without delay.")

(Harikesa, having thus spoken, perceiver of faults among beings, performed austerity for a long time, immersed in water, the great ascetic.)
Harikesa, after saying this, who could see the faults in beings, performed austerities for a long time immersed in water, being a great ascetic.
सुमहान्तं ततः कालं प्रतीक्ष्यैनं पितामहः। स्रष्टारं सर्वभूतानां ससर्ज मनसापरम् ॥१०-१७-१२॥
sumahāntaṃ tataḥ kālaṃ pratīkṣyainaṃ pitāmahaḥ। sraṣṭāraṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ sasarja manasāparam ॥10-17-12॥
[सुमहान्तम् (sumahāntam) - very great; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कालम् (kālam) - time; प्रतीक्ष्य (pratīkṣya) - having waited; एनम् (enam) - this (one); पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - the grandsire; स्रष्टारम् (sraṣṭāram) - creator; सर्वभूतानाम् (sarvabhūtānām) - of all beings; ससर्ज (sasarja) - created; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; परम् (param) - another;]
(Then, having waited for a very great time, the grandsire created by mind another creator of all beings, this (one).)

सोऽब्रवीत्पितरं दृष्ट्वा गिरिशं मग्नमम्भसि। यदि मे नाग्रजस्त्वन्यस्ततः स्रक्ष्याम्यहं प्रजाः ॥१०-१७-१३॥
so'bravīt pitaraṃ dṛṣṭvā giriśaṃ magnam ambhasi। yadi me nāgrajas tv anyas tataḥ srakṣyāmy ahaṃ prajāḥ ॥10-17-13॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पितरम् (pitaraṃ) - to the father; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; गिरिशम् (giriśam) - Giriśa (Śiva); मग्नम् (magnam) - immersed; अम्भसि (ambhasi) - in water; यदि (yadi) - if; मे (me) - to me; न (na) - not; अग्रजः (agrajaḥ) - elder brother; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - another; ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्रक्ष्यामि (srakṣyāmi) - I will create; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - beings;]
(He said to the father, having seen Giriśa immersed in water: If to me there is not an elder brother, you are another; then I will create beings.)
He, seeing Giriśa (Śiva) immersed in water, said to his father: "If I do not have an elder brother, and you are someone else, then I myself will create beings."
तमब्रवीत्पिता नास्ति त्वदन्यः पुरुषोऽग्रजः। स्थाणुरेष जले मग्नो विस्रब्धः कुरु वै कृतिम् ॥१०-१७-१४॥
tam abravīt pitā nāsti tvad anyaḥ puruṣaḥ agrajaḥ। sthāṇuḥ eṣaḥ jale magnah visrabdhaḥ kuru vai kṛtim ॥10-17-14॥
[तम् (tam) - to him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; पिता (pitā) - the father; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; त्वत् (tvat) - than you; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - other; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; अग्रजः (agrajaḥ) - elder brother; स्थाणुः (sthāṇuḥ) - Sthāṇu (Śiva); एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; जले (jale) - in the water; मग्नः (magnaḥ) - immersed; विस्रब्धः (visrabdhaḥ) - confidently; कुरु (kuru) - do; वै (vai) - indeed; कृतिम् (kṛtim) - the act;]
(To him, the father said: There is no other man elder than you. This Sthāṇu (Śiva) is immersed in the water. Confidently, indeed, do the act.)
The father said to him, "There is no one older than you. This Sthāṇu (Śiva) is immersed in the water. Go ahead and perform the act with confidence."
स भूतान्यसृजत्सप्त दक्षादींस्तु प्रजापतीन्। यैरिमं व्यकरोत्सर्वं भूतग्रामं चतुर्विधम् ॥१०-१७-१५॥
sa bhūtānyasṛjatsapta dakṣādīṃstu prajāpatīn। yairimaṃ vyakarotsarvaṃ bhūtagrāmaṃ caturvidham ॥10-17-15॥
[स (sa) - he; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; असृजत् (asṛjat) - created; सप्त (sapta) - seven; दक्षादीन् (dakṣādīn) - Daksha and others; तु (tu) - but; प्रजापतीन् (prajāpatīn) - Prajapatis; यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; इमम् (imam) - this; व्यकरोत् (vyakarot) - was diversified; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; भूतग्रामम् (bhūtagrāmam) - the multitude of beings; चतुर्विधम् (caturvidham) - of four kinds;]
(He created beings, the seven Prajapatis beginning with Daksha, by whom this entire multitude of beings of four kinds was diversified.)

(They, just created, hungry, all creatures, at Prajapati, desiring to eat, O king, suddenly rushed then.)

स भक्ष्यमाणस्त्राणार्थी पितामहमुपाद्रवत्। आभ्यो मां भगवान्पातु वृत्तिरासां विधीयताम् ॥१०-१७-१७॥
sa bhakṣyamāṇastrāṇārthī pitāmahamupādravat। ābhyo māṃ bhagavānpātu vṛttirāsāṃ vidhīyatām ॥10-17-17॥

(He, being eaten and seeking protection, approached the grandsire. From them, may the Lord protect me; may the livelihood of these be arranged.)

ततस्ताभ्यो ददावन्नमोषधीः स्थावराणि च। जङ्गमानि च भूतानि दुर्बलानि बलीयसाम् ॥१०-१७-१८॥
tatastābhyo dadāv annam oṣadhīḥ sthāvarāṇi ca| jaṅgamāni ca bhūtāni durbalāni balīyasām ॥10-17-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; ताभ्यः (tābhyaḥ) - to them; ददौ (dadau) - gave; अन्नम् (annam) - food; ओषधीः (oṣadhīḥ) - herbs; स्थावराणि (sthāvarāṇi) - immobile beings; च (ca) - and; जङ्गमानि (jaṅgamāni) - mobile beings; च (ca) - and; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - creatures; दुर्बलानि (durbalāni) - the weak; बलीयसाम् (balīyasām) - for the strong;]
(Then to them he gave food, herbs, immobile beings and mobile beings, creatures, the weak for the strong.)

[विहित-अन्नाः (vihita-annāḥ) - having prescribed food; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - subjects; ताः तु (tāḥ tu) - they indeed; जग्मुः (jagmuḥ) - went; तुष्टाः (tuṣṭāḥ) - satisfied; यथा-आगतम् (yathā-āgatam) - as they had come; ततः (tataḥ) - then; ववृधिरे (vavṛdhire) - grew; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रीतिमत्यः (prītimatyaḥ) - full of joy; स्व-योनिषु (sva-yoniṣu) - in their own origins;]
(Having received the prescribed food, the subjects, satisfied, went back as they had come. Then, O king, they grew, full of joy, in their own origins.)

भूतग्रामे विवृद्धे तु तुष्टे लोकगुरावपि। उदतिष्ठज्जलाज्ज्येष्ठः प्रजाश्चेमा ददर्श सः ॥१०-१७-२०॥

bahurūpāḥ prajā dṛṣṭvā vivṛddhāḥ svena tejasā। cukrodha bhagavān rudro liṅgaṃ svaṃ cāpyavidhyat ॥10-17-21॥

(Having seen the creatures of many forms grown by his own splendor, the Lord Rudra became angry and also pierced his own linga.)

तत्प्रविद्धं तदा भूमौ तथैव प्रत्यतिष्ठत। तमुवाचाव्ययो ब्रह्मा वचोभिः शमयन्निव ॥१०-१७-२२॥

किं कृतं सलिले शर्व चिरकालं स्थितेन ते। किमर्थं चैतदुत्पाट्य भूमौ लिङ्गं प्रवेरितम् ॥१०-१७-२३॥
kiṃ kṛtaṃ salile śarva cirakālaṃ sthitena te। kimarthaṃ caitadutpāṭya bhūmau liṅgaṃ praveritam ॥10-17-23॥

(What was done in the water, O Śarva, by you staying for a long time? And for what reason, having uprooted this, was the liṅga thrown on the ground?)
O Śarva, what were you doing in the water for such a long time? And why did you uproot this liṅga and throw it on the ground?
सोऽब्रवीज्जातसंरम्भस्तदा लोकगुरुर्गुरुम्। प्रजाः सृष्टाः परेणेमाः किं करिष्याम्यनेन वै ॥१०-१७-२४॥
so'bravīj jāta-saṁrambhas tadā loka-gurur gurum। prajāḥ sṛṣṭāḥ pareṇa imāḥ kiṁ kariṣyāmi anena vai ॥10-17-24॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; जात-संरम्भः (jāta-saṁrambhaḥ) - having become agitated; तदा (tadā) - then; लोकगुरुः (loka-guruḥ) - the teacher of the world; गुरुम् (gurum) - to the teacher; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures; सृष्टाः (sṛṣṭāḥ) - created; परेण (pareṇa) - by the Supreme; इमाः (imāḥ) - these; किम् (kim) - what; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - shall I do; अनेन (anena) - with this; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(He, having become agitated, then the teacher of the world said to the teacher: "Creatures have been created by the Supreme, these; what shall I do with this indeed?")
He, now agitated, the teacher of the world, said to his own teacher: "These creatures have already been created by the Supreme; what am I to do with this (creation)?"
तपसाधिगतं चान्नं प्रजार्थं मे पितामह। ओषध्यः परिवर्तेरन्यथैव सततं प्रजाः ॥१०-१७-२५॥
tapasādhigataṃ cānnaṃ prajārthaṃ me pitāmaha| oṣadhyaḥ parivarteranyathaiva satataṃ prajāḥ ॥10-17-25॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; अधिगतं (adhigatam) - obtained; च (ca) - and; अन्नं (annaṃ) - food; प्रजार्थं (prajārtham) - for the sake of progeny; मे (me) - my; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire; ओषध्यः (oṣadhyaḥ) - plants; परिवर्तेरन् (parivarteran) - should change; यथा (yathā) - as; एव (eva) - indeed; सततं (satataṃ) - always; प्रजाः (prajāḥ) - creatures;]
(O grandsire, the food obtained by austerity is for the sake of progeny; the plants should always change just as indeed the creatures (do).)
O grandsire, the food gained through austerity is meant for the welfare of progeny; let the plants always change just as all living beings do.
एवमुक्त्वा तु सङ्क्रुद्धो जगाम विमना भवः। गिरेर्मुञ्जवतः पादं तपस्तप्तुं महातपाः ॥१०-१७-२६॥
evam-uktvā tu saṅkruddho jagāma vimanā bhavaḥ। girer-muñjavataḥ pādaṃ tapas-taptuṃ mahātapāḥ॥10-17-26॥

(Thus having spoken, but enraged, dejected, Bhava (Śiva) went to the foot of Mount Muñjavat to perform austerity, the great ascetic.)
