dhṛtarāṣṭrābhyanujñātās tataste kurupuṅgavāḥ। abhyayur bhrātaraḥ sarve gāndhārīṃ sahakeśavāḥ ॥11-13-1॥

स गङ्गायामुपस्पृश्य पुण्यगन्धं पयः शुचि। तं देशमुपसम्पेदे परमर्षिर्मनोजवः ॥११-१३-४॥
sa gaṅgāyām-upaspṛśya puṇyagandhaṃ payaḥ śuci| taṃ deśam-upasamped paramarṣir-manōjavaḥ ||11-13-4||

दिव्येन चक्षुषा पश्यन्मनसानुद्धतेन च। सर्वप्राणभृतां भावं स तत्र समबुध्यत ॥११-१३-५॥

(Seeing with divine eye and with mind not arrogant, he there understood the state of all living beings.)

स स्नुषामब्रवीत्काले कल्यवादी महातपाः। शापकालमवाक्षिप्य शमकालमुदीरयन् ॥११-१३-६॥

(He, to the daughters-in-law, said at the right time, the one who speaks auspicious words, the great ascetic, having set aside the time for curse, proclaiming the time for peace.)

न कोपः पाण्डवे कार्यो गान्धारि शममाप्नुहि। रजो निगृह्यतामेतच्छृणु चेदं वचो मम ॥११-१३-७॥
na kopaḥ pāṇḍave kāryo gāndhāri śamam āpnuhi। rajo nigṛhyatām etac chṛṇu ca idaṃ vaco mama॥11-13-7॥

(Not anger towards Pāṇḍava should be done, O Gāndhārī; attain peace. Let passion be restrained; hear also this word of mine.)
O Gāndhārī, do not be angry with the Pāṇḍava; find peace. Restrain your passion and listen to these words of mine.
उक्तास्यष्टादशाहानि पुत्रेण जयमिच्छता। शिवमाशास्स्व मे मातर्युध्यमानस्य शत्रुभिः ॥११-१३-८॥
uktāsyaṣṭādaśāhāni putreṇa jayamicchatā। śivamāśāssva me mātaryudhyamānasya śatrubhiḥ ॥11-13-8॥
[शत्रुभिः (śatrubhiḥ) - with enemies;]
(Spoken by him, for eighteen days, by the son desiring victory, wish welfare for me, O mother, as I am fighting with enemies.)
O mother, for eighteen days, as your son desires victory and fights with enemies, wish welfare for me.
सा तथा याच्यमाना त्वं काले काले जयैषिणा। उक्तवत्यसि गान्धारि यतो धर्मस्ततो जयः ॥११-१३-९॥
sā tathā yācyamānā tvaṃ kāle kāle jayaiṣiṇā। uktavatyasi gāndhāri yato dharmastato jayaḥ ॥11-13-9॥
[सा (sā) - she; तथा (tathā) - thus; याच्यमाना (yācyamānā) - being entreated; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; काले (kāle) - at time; काले (kāle) - at time; जयैषिणा (jayaiṣiṇā) - by the one desiring victory; उक्तवत्यसि (uktavatyasi) - you have said; गान्धारि (gāndhāri) - O Gandhari; यतः (yataḥ) - where; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; ततः (tataḥ) - from that; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory;]
(She, thus being entreated by you at every time by the one desiring victory, you have said, O Gandhari: "Where there is righteousness, from that comes victory.")
Thus, whenever you were entreated by the one seeking victory, O Gandhari, you have always said: "Where there is righteousness, there is victory."
न चाप्यतीतां गान्धारि वाचं ते वितथामहम्। स्मरामि भाषमाणायास्तथा प्रणिहिता ह्यसि ॥११-१३-१०॥
na cāpyatītāṃ gāndhāri vācaṃ te vitathāmaham। smarāmi bhāṣamāṇāyāstathā praṇihitā hyasi ॥11-13-10॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अतीतां (atītām) - passed; (that which is) past; गान्धारि (gāndhāri) - O Gandhari; वाचं (vācam) - speech; ते (te) - your; वितथाम् (vitathām) - false; अहम् (aham) - I; स्मरामि (smarāmi) - remember; भाषमाणायाः (bhāṣamāṇāyāḥ) - (of) speaking (woman); तथा (tathā) - thus; प्रणिहिता (praṇihitā) - uttered; हि (hi) - indeed; असि (asi) - you are;]
(Not even in the past, O Gandhari, do I remember your speech as false; thus, you are indeed one whose words are uttered (truthfully) while speaking.)
O Gandhari, I do not recall your words ever being false in the past; you have always spoken with sincerity.
सा त्वं धर्मं परिस्मृत्य वाचा चोक्त्वा मनस्विनि। कोपं संयच्छ गान्धारि मैवं भूः सत्यवादिनि ॥११-१३-११॥
sā tvaṃ dharmaṃ parismṛtya vācā coktvā manasvini। kopaṃ saṃyaccha gāndhāri maivaṃ bhūḥ satyavādini॥11-13-11॥
[सा (sā) - she; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - duty; परिस्मृत्य (parismṛtya) - having thoroughly remembered; वाचा (vācā) - by speech; च (ca) - and; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; मनस्विनि (manasvini) - O strong-minded one; कोपं (kopaṃ) - anger; संयच्छ (saṃyaccha) - restrain; गान्धारि (gāndhāri) - O Gandhari; मा (mā) - do not; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; भूः (bhūḥ) - be; सत्यवादिनि (satyavādini) - O speaker of truth;]
(She, you, having thoroughly remembered duty and having spoken by speech, O strong-minded one, restrain anger, O Gandhari, do not be thus, O speaker of truth.)
She said: 'You, O Gandhari, having remembered your duty and spoken thus, O strong-minded and truthful one, restrain your anger; do not be so.'

bhagavan nābhyasūyāmi naitān icchāmi naśyataḥ। putraśokena tu balān mano vihvalatīva me ॥11-13-12॥
[भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; न (na) - not; अभ्यसूयामि (abhyasūyāmi) - I am envious; न (na) - not; एतान् (etān) - these; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I wish; नश्यतः (naśyataḥ) - perishing; पुत्रशोकेन (putraśokena) - by grief for my son; तु (tu) - but; बलात् (balāt) - by force; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; विह्वलतीव (vihvalatīva) - seems agitated; मे (me) - my;]
(O Lord, I am not envious, I do not wish these (to perish); but by the force of grief for my son, my mind seems agitated.)
O Lord, I do not bear ill will, nor do I wish these to perish; but my mind is overwhelmed by the force of grief for my son.
यथैव कुन्त्या कौन्तेया रक्षितव्यास्तथा मया। यथैव धृतराष्ट्रेण रक्षितव्यास्तथा मया ॥११-१३-१३॥
yathaiva kuntyā kaunteyā rakṣitavyās tathā mayā। yathaiva dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rakṣitavyās tathā mayā ॥11-13-13॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; कुन्त्या (kuntyā) - by Kuntī; कौन्तेयाः (kaunteyāḥ) - the sons of Kuntī; रक्षितव्याः (rakṣitavyāḥ) - to be protected; तथा (tathā) - so; मया (mayā) - by me; यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; धृतराष्ट्रेण (dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa) - by Dhṛtarāṣṭra; रक्षितव्याः (rakṣitavyāḥ) - to be protected; तथा (tathā) - so; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Just as indeed by Kuntī the sons of Kuntī are to be protected, so by me; just as indeed by Dhṛtarāṣṭra they are to be protected, so by me.)
Just as the sons of Kuntī are to be protected by Kuntī, so also by me; just as they are to be protected by Dhṛtarāṣṭra, so also by me.
दुर्योधनापराधेन शकुनेः सौबलस्य च। कर्णदुःशासनाभ्यां च वृत्तोऽयं कुरुसङ्क्षयः ॥११-१३-१४॥
duryodhanāparādhena śakuneḥ saubalasya ca। karṇaduḥśāsanābhyāṃ ca vṛtto'yaṃ kurusaṅkṣayaḥ ॥11-13-14॥

नापराध्यति बीभत्सुर्न च पार्थो वृकोदरः। नकुलः सहदेवो वा नैव जातु युधिष्ठिरः ॥११-१३-१५॥
nāparādhyati bībhatsur na ca pārtho vṛkodaraḥ। nakulaḥ sahadevo vā naiva jātu yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ॥11-13-15॥

(Not does Bībhatsu (Arjuna) commit an offense, nor Pārtha (Arjuna) and Vṛkodara (Bhīma); Nakula, Sahadeva or not at all ever Yudhiṣṭhira.)
Neither Bībhatsu (Arjuna), nor Pārtha (Arjuna), nor Vṛkodara (Bhīma), nor Nakula, nor Sahadeva, nor ever Yudhiṣṭhira commit any offense.
युध्यमाना हि कौरव्याः कृन्तमानाः परस्परम्। निहताः सहिताश्चान्यैस्तत्र नास्त्यप्रियं मम ॥११-१३-१६॥
yudhyamānā hi kauravyāḥ kṛntamānāḥ parasparam। nihatāḥ sahitāś cānyais tatra nāsty apriyaṃ mama ॥11-13-16॥

(Fighting indeed the Kauravas, cutting down each other, slain together and by others there, not is unpleasant to me.)
As the Kauravas fight and cut each other down, being slain together and by others, there is nothing unpleasant to me in that.
यत्तु कर्माकरोद्भीमो वासुदेवस्य पश्यतः। दुर्योधनं समाहूय गदायुद्धे महामनाः ॥११-१३-१७॥
yattu karmākarodbhīmo vāsudevasya paśyataḥ। duryodhanaṃ samāhūya gadāyuddhe mahāmanāḥ ॥11-13-17॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तु (tu) - but; कर्म (karma) - action; अकरोत् (akarot) - did; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; वासुदेवस्य (vāsudevasya) - of Vāsudeva; पश्यतः (paśyataḥ) - while watching; दुर्योधनम् (duryodhanam) - Duryodhana; समाहूय (samāhūya) - having summoned; गदायुद्धे (gadāyuddhe) - in mace-combat; महामनाः (mahāmanāḥ) - the great-minded (one);]
(But the action which Bhima did, having summoned Duryodhana to mace-combat, while Vāsudeva was watching, the great-minded (one).)
But the great-minded Bhima, having summoned Duryodhana to mace-combat while Vāsudeva was watching, performed that deed.
शिक्षयाभ्यधिकं ज्ञात्वा चरन्तं बहुधा रणे। अधो नाभ्यां प्रहृतवांस्तन्मे कोपमवर्धयत् ॥११-१३-१८॥
śikṣayābhyadhikaṃ jñātvā carantaṃ bahudhā raṇe। adho nābhyāṃ prahṛtavāṃstanme kopamavardhayat ॥11-13-18॥

(Having known (him) as superior by skill, moving in many ways in battle, (he) having struck below at the navel, that increased my anger.)

कथं नु धर्मं धर्मज्ञैः समुद्दिष्टं महात्मभिः। त्यजेयुराहवे शूराः प्राणहेतोः कथञ्चन ॥११-१३-१९॥
kathaṁ nu dharmaṁ dharmajñaiḥ samuddiṣṭaṁ mahātmabhiḥ। tyajeyurāhave śūrāḥ prāṇahetoḥ kathañcana ॥11-13-19॥

(How indeed would the heroes, in any way, abandon in battle the dharma declared by the knowers of dharma and great souls, for the sake of life?)
How could the brave ever abandon, in battle and for the sake of their own lives, the duty declared by the wise and the great souls?
