Core and Pancharatra: In sprite of Bhima clarifying his acts against Duryodhana and Dushasana, Gandhari asks - "both of us are old and have lost our kingdom; how is it that even a single offspring has not been left for these two blind couple".
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं तस्या भीमसेनोऽथ भीतवत्। गान्धारीं प्रत्युवाचेदं वचः सानुनयं तदा ॥११-१४-१॥
tacchrutvā vacanaṃ tasyā bhīmaseno'tha bhītavat। gāndhārīṃ pratyuvācedaṃ vacaḥ sānunayaṃ tadā ॥11-14-1॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; तस्या (tasyāḥ) - her; भीमसेनः (bhīmasenaḥ) - Bhīmasena; अथ (atha) - then; भीतवत् (bhītavat) - as if frightened; गान्धारीम् (gāndhārīm) - Gāndhārī; प्रत्युवाच (pratyuvāca) - replied; इदम् (idam) - this; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech; सानुनयम् (sānunayam) - with conciliation; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(Having heard that speech of hers, Bhīmasena then, as if frightened, replied this speech with conciliation to Gāndhārī at that time.)
When Bhīmasena heard her words, he, appearing frightened, then addressed Gāndhārī with conciliatory words.
अधर्मो यदि वा धर्मस्त्रासात्तत्र मया कृतः। आत्मानं त्रातुकामेन तन्मे त्वं क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥११-१४-२॥
adharmo yadi vā dharmastrāsāttatra mayā kṛtaḥ। ātmānaṃ trātukāmena tanme tvaṃ kṣantumarhasi ॥11-14-2॥
[अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - righteousness; त्रासात् (trāsāt) - from fear; तत्र (tatra) - there; मया (mayā) - by me; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - myself; त्रातुकामेन (trātukāmena) - desiring to protect; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - by me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; क्षन्तुम् (kṣantum) - to forgive; अर्हसि (arhasi) - are worthy (should do);]
(If unrighteousness or righteousness was done there by me out of fear, desiring to protect myself, that you should forgive me.)
If, out of fear and in the desire to protect myself, I have done either unrighteousness or righteousness there, you should forgive me for that.
न हि युद्धेन पुत्रस्ते धर्मेण स महाबलः। शक्यः केनचिदुद्यन्तुमतो विषममाचरम् ॥११-१४-३॥
na hi yuddhena putraste dharmeṇa sa mahābalaḥ। śakyaḥ kenacidudyantumato viṣamamācaram ॥11-14-3॥

(Not indeed by battle is your son, he of great strength, possible by anyone to be overcome by righteousness; therefore act unfairly.)
Indeed, your son of great strength cannot be overcome by anyone in battle through righteousness; therefore, act with unfair means.
सैन्यस्यैकोऽवशिष्टोऽयं गदायुद्धे च वीर्यवान्। मां हत्वा न हरेद्राज्यमिति चैतत्कृतं मया ॥११-१४-४॥
sainyasyaiko'vaśiṣṭo'yaṃ gadāyuddhe ca vīryavān। māṃ hatvā na haredrājyamiti caitatkṛtaṃ mayā ॥11-14-4॥
[सैन्यस्य (sainyasya) - of the army; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; अवशिष्टः (avaśiṣṭaḥ) - remaining; अयम् (ayam) - this; गदा-युद्धे (gadā-yuddhe) - in mace-battle; च (ca) - and; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful; माम् (mām) - me; हत्वा (hatvā) - having slain; न (na) - not; हरेत् (haret) - should take; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Of the army, one (is) remaining, this (man), in mace-battle and powerful; having slain me, he should not take the kingdom—thus, and this (was) done by me.)
Only one powerful warrior of the army remains in the mace-battle—this man. I have done this so that, even if he kills me, he should not take the kingdom.
राजपुत्रीं च पाञ्चालीमेकवस्त्रां रजस्वलाम्। भवत्या विदितं सर्वमुक्तवान्यत्सुतस्तव ॥११-१४-५॥
rājaputrīṃ ca pāñcālīm ekavastrāṃ rajasvalām। bhavatyā viditaṃ sarvam uktavān yat sutas tava ॥11-14-5॥

Your son has spoken everything about Panchali, the princess, who was in a single garment and menstruating, as you already know.
सुयोधनमसङ्गृह्य न शक्या भूः ससागरा। केवला भोक्तुमस्माभिरतश्चैतत्कृतं मया ॥११-१४-६॥
suyodhanamasaṅgṛhya na shakyā bhūḥ sasāgarā। kevalā bhoktum asmābhir ataś caitat kṛtaṃ mayā ॥11-14-6॥

(Without securing Suyodhana, the earth with oceans cannot possibly be enjoyed by us alone; therefore, this has been done by me.)
Therefore, because the earth with its oceans cannot be enjoyed by us alone without securing Suyodhana, I have done this.
तच्चाप्यप्रियमस्माकं पुत्रस्ते समुपाचरत्। द्रौपद्या यत्सभामध्ये सव्यमूरुमदर्शयत् ॥११-१४-७॥
taccāpyapriyam asmākaṃ putras te samupācarat। draupadyā yat sabhāmadhye savyamūrum adarśayat ॥11-14-7॥

(That also unpleasant to us, your son performed; by Draupadī, which in the midst of the assembly, the left thigh he showed.)
Your son also did that which was unpleasant to us; in the midst of the assembly, he showed his left thigh to Draupadī.
तत्रैव वध्यः सोऽस्माकं दुराचारोऽम्ब ते सुतः। धर्मराजाज्ञया चैव स्थिताः स्म समये तदा ॥११-१४-८॥
tatraiva vadhyaḥ so'smākaṃ durācāro'mba te sutaḥ। dharmarājājñayā caiva sthitāḥ sma samaye tadā ॥11-14-8॥

(There itself, to be slain is he, our wicked (one), O mother, your son. By the command of Dharmarāja and indeed, we remained at the time then.)
O mother, your son, who is wicked, was to be slain there itself; by the command of Dharmarāja, we indeed remained at that time.
वैरमुद्धुक्षितं राज्ञि पुत्रेण तव तन्महत्। क्लेशिताश्च वने नित्यं तत एतत्कृतं मया ॥११-१४-९॥
vairam uddhukṣitaṃ rājñi putreṇa tava tan mahat| kleśitāś ca vane nityaṃ tata etat kṛtaṃ mayā ||11-14-9||

(Enmity inflamed, O queen, by your son, that great (one); afflicted and always in the forest, therefore, this was done by me.)
O queen, your son inflamed great enmity; being always afflicted in the forest, therefore, I have done this.
वैरस्यास्य गतः पारं हत्वा दुर्योधनं रणे। राज्यं युधिष्ठिरः प्राप्तो वयं च गतमन्यवः ॥११-१४-१०॥
vairasyāsya gataḥ pāraṃ hatvā duryodhanaṃ raṇe। rājyaṃ yudhiṣṭhiraḥ prāpto vayaṃ ca gatamanyavaḥ ॥11-14-10॥

(Of enmity of him gone to the end, having slain Duryodhana in battle, the kingdom Yudhishthira has obtained, we also with anger gone.)
Having slain Duryodhana in battle, Yudhishthira has obtained the kingdom, the enmity is ended, and we too are now free from anger.

न तस्यैष वधस्तात यत्प्रशंससि मे सुतम्। कृतवांश्चापि तत्सर्वं यदिदं भाषसे मयि ॥११-१४-११॥
na tasya eṣa vadhas tāta yat praśaṃsasi me sutam। kṛtavāṃś ca api tat sarvam yad idaṃ bhāṣase mayi ॥11-14-11॥

[हताश्वे (hatāśve) - with the horse (chariot) destroyed; नकुले (nakule) - Nakula; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; वृषसेनेन (vṛṣasenaena) - by Vṛṣasena; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; अपिबः (apibaḥ) - you drank; शोणितं (śoṇitaṃ) - blood; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; दुःशासनशरीरजम् (duḥśāsanaśarīrajam) - arisen from Duḥśāsana's body;]
(With the horse (chariot) destroyed, Nakula, that which by Vṛṣasena, O Bhārata, you drank blood in battle arisen from Duḥśāsana's body.)
O Bhārata, when Nakula's chariot was destroyed by Vṛṣasena, you drank the blood that came from Duḥśāsana's body on the battlefield.
सद्भिर्विगर्हितं घोरमनार्यजनसेवितम्। क्रूरं कर्माकरोः कस्मात्तदयुक्तं वृकोदर ॥११-१४-१३॥
sadbhir vigarhitaṃ ghoram anārya-jana-sevitam। krūraṃ karma akaroḥ kasmāt tad ayuktaṃ vṛkodara ॥11-14-13॥
[सद्भिः (sadbhih) - by the virtuous; विगर्हितं (vigarhitam) - condemned; घोरं (ghoram) - terrible; अनार्यजनसेवितम् (anārya-jana-sevitam) - practiced by ignoble people; क्रूरं (krūram) - cruel; कर्म (karma) - action; अकरोः (akaroḥ) - you did; कस्मात् (kasmāt) - why; तत् (tat) - that; अयुक्तं (ayuktam) - improper; वृकोदर (vṛkodara) - O Vṛkodara (Bhīma);]
(By the virtuous condemned, terrible, practiced by ignoble people, cruel action you did; why that improper (action), O Vṛkodara?)
O Vṛkodara, why did you do that improper, cruel action, condemned by the virtuous and practiced by ignoble people?

अन्यस्यापि न पातव्यं रुधिरं किं पुनः स्वकम्। यथैवात्मा तथा भ्राता विशेषो नास्ति कश्चन ॥११-१४-१४॥
anyasyāpi na pātavyaṃ rudhiraṃ kiṃ punaḥ svakam। yathaivātmā tathā bhrātā viśeṣo nāsti kaścana ॥11-14-14॥

(Of another also, not to be shed blood; what again one's own? Just as indeed self, so brother; distinction does not exist any.)
One should not shed another's blood, much less one's own. Just as the self, so is the brother; there is no distinction whatsoever.
रुधिरं न व्यतिक्रामद्दन्तोष्ठं मेऽम्ब मा शुचः। वैवस्वतस्तु तद्वेद हस्तौ मे रुधिरोक्षितौ ॥११-१४-१५॥
rudhiraṃ na vyatikrāmad dantoṣṭhaṃ me 'mba mā śucaḥ। vaivasvatastu tad veda hastau me rudhirokṣitau ॥11-14-15॥
[रुधिरं (rudhiraṃ) - blood; न (na) - not; व्यतिक्रामत् (vyatikrāmat) - has crossed; दन्तोष्ठं (dantoṣṭham) - teeth and lips; मे (me) - my; अम्ब (amba) - mother; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; वैवस्वतः (vaivasvataḥ) - Yama; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - that; वेद (veda) - knows; हस्तौ (hastau) - hands; मे (me) - my; रुधिरोक्षितौ (rudhirokṣitau) - smeared with blood;]
(Blood has not crossed my teeth and lips, mother, do not grieve. But Yama knows that, my hands are smeared with blood.)

हताश्वं नकुलं दृष्ट्वा वृषसेनेन संयुगे। भ्रातॄणां सम्प्रहृष्टानां त्रासः सञ्जनितो मया ॥११-१४-१६॥
hatāśvaṃ nakulaṃ dṛṣṭvā vṛṣasenaena saṃyuge. bhrātṝṇāṃ samprahṛṣṭānāṃ trāsaḥ sañjanito mayā ॥11-14-16॥
[हताश्वम् (hatāśvam) - having lost horses; नकुलम् (nakulam) - Nakula; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; वृषसेनेन (vṛṣasenaena) - by Vṛṣasena; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; भ्रातॄणाम् (bhrātṝṇām) - of the brothers; सम्प्रहृष्टानाम् (samprahṛṣṭānām) - greatly rejoicing; त्रासः (trāsaḥ) - fear; सञ्जनितः (sañjanitaḥ) - was produced; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Having seen Nakula, whose horses were slain by Vṛṣasena in battle, fear was produced by me in the greatly rejoicing brothers.)
When I saw Nakula, whose horses had been killed by Vṛṣasena in battle, I caused fear among my brothers, who were greatly rejoicing.
केशपक्षपरामर्शे द्रौपद्या द्यूतकारिते। क्रोधाद्यदब्रुवं चाहं तच्च मे हृदि वर्तते ॥११-१४-१७॥
keśapakṣaparāmarśe draupadyā dyūtakārite। krodhādyadabruvaṃ cāhaṃ tacca me hṛdi vartate ॥11-14-17॥

(In the recollection of Draupadī's hair-tuft, caused by the dice-game, from anger, what I spoke and I, that also in my heart remains.)
The memory of Draupadī's hair being seized during the dice-game, and the words I spoke in anger then, still remain in my heart.
क्षत्रधर्माच्च्युतो राज्ञि भवेयं शास्वतीः समाः। प्रतिज्ञां तामनिस्तीर्य ततस्तत्कृतवानहम् ॥११-१४-१८॥
kṣatradharmāccyuto rājñi bhaveyaṃ śāsvatīḥ samāḥ। pratijñāṃ tāmanistīrya tatastatkṛtavānaham ॥11-14-18॥
[क्षत्रधर्मात् (kṣatradharmāt) - from the duty of a warrior; च्युतः (cyutaḥ) - fallen; राज्ञि (rājñi) - O queen; भवेयम् (bhaveyam) - I would become; शाश्वतीः (śāśvatīḥ) - eternal; समाः (samāḥ) - years; प्रतिज्ञाम् (pratijñām) - vow; ताम् (tām) - that; अनिस्तीर्य (anistīrya) - not fulfilling; ततः (tataḥ) - then; तत् (tat) - that; कृतवान् (kṛtavān) - I did; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Fallen from the duty of a warrior, O queen, I would live for eternal years, not fulfilling that vow; then, I did that.)
O queen, had I abandoned the duty of a warrior and not fulfilled that vow, I would have lived for endless years; therefore, I did that.
न मामर्हसि गान्धारि दोषेण परिशङ्कितुम्। अनिगृह्य पुरा पुत्रानस्मास्वनपकारिषु ॥११-१४-१९॥
na mām arhasi gāndhāri doṣeṇa pariśaṅkitum। anigṛhya purā putrān asmāsu anapakāriṣu ॥11-14-19॥

(You ought not, O Gāndhārī, to suspect me of fault; formerly, without restraining your sons, towards us who have not done harm.)
O Gāndhārī, you should not suspect me of any fault; in the past, without restraining your sons, you did not act against us who had done no wrong.

vṛddhasyāsya śataṃ putrān nighnaṃs tvam aparājitaḥ। kasmān na śeṣayaḥ kañcid yenālpam aparādhitam ॥11-14-20॥

You, the unconquered one, have killed a hundred sons of this old man; why do you not spare even one who has committed only a small offense?
सन्तानमावयोस्तात वृद्धयोर्हृतराज्ययोः। कथमन्धद्वयस्यास्य यष्टिरेका न वर्जिता ॥११-१४-२१॥
santānam āvayos tāta vṛddhayor hṛta-rājyayoḥ। katham andha-dvayasya asya yaṣṭiḥ ekā na varjitā ॥11-14-21॥
[सन्तानम् (santānam) - offspring; आवयोः (āvayoḥ) - of us two; तात (tāta) - O father; वृद्धयोः (vṛddhayoḥ) - of the aged; हृतराज्ययोः (hṛta-rājyayoḥ) - of those whose kingdom is taken; कथम् (katham) - how; अन्धद्वयस्य (andha-dvayasya) - of the two blind; अस्य (asya) - of this; यष्टिः (yaṣṭiḥ) - staff; एका (ekā) - one; न (na) - not; वर्जिता (varjitā) - left;]
(O father, the offspring of us two aged ones whose kingdom is taken—how is it that for these two blind ones, this one staff has not been left?)
O father, both of us are old and have lost our kingdom; how is it that even a single staff has not been left for these two blind men, our only offspring?
शेषे ह्यवस्थिते तात पुत्राणामन्तके त्वयि। न मे दुःखं भवेदेतद्यदि त्वं धर्ममाचरः ॥११-१४-२२॥
śeṣe hy avasthite tāta putrāṇām-antake tvayi। na me duḥkhaṃ bhaved etad yadi tvaṃ dharmam ācaraḥ ॥11-14-22॥
[शेषे (śeṣe) - when remaining; हि (hi) - indeed; अवस्थिते (avasthite) - being situated; तात (tāta) - O dear one; पुत्राणाम् (putrāṇām) - of the sons; अन्तके (antake) - at the end; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; एतत् (etat) - this; यदि (yadi) - if; त्वम् (tvam) - you; धर्मम् (dharmam) - righteousness; आचरः (ācaraḥ) - practice;]
(When, indeed, you remain, O dear one, at the end of the sons, in you, there would not be sorrow for me, this, if you practice righteousness.)
O dear one, if you, the last of my sons, survive and practice righteousness, then I will have no sorrow.
