एवमुक्त्वा तु गान्धारी युधिष्ठिरमपृच्छत। क्व स राजेति सक्रोधा पुत्रपौत्रवधार्दिता ॥११-१५-१॥
evam-uktvā tu gāndhārī yudhiṣṭhiram-apṛcchata। kva sa rājeti sakrodhā putrapautravadhārditā ॥11-15-1॥

Having spoken thus, Gāndhārī, afflicted by the slaughter of her sons and grandsons, angrily asked Yudhiṣṭhira: "Where is that king?"
तामभ्यगच्छद्राजेन्द्रो वेपमानः कृताञ्जलिः। युधिष्ठिर इदं चैनां मधुरं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥११-१५-२॥
tām abhyagacchad rājendraḥ vepamānaḥ kṛtāñjaliḥ। yudhiṣṭhira idaṃ ca enām madhuraṃ vākyam abravīt ॥11-15-2॥

पुत्रहन्ता नृशंसोऽहं तव देवि युधिष्ठिरः। शापार्हः पृथिवीनाशे हेतुभूतः शपस्व माम् ॥११-१५-३॥

(I, Yudhiṣṭhira, your son, O goddess, am a son-slayer, cruel, worthy of curse, having become the cause in the destruction of the earth; curse me.)
O goddess, I, Yudhiṣṭhira, your son, am a cruel slayer of sons, deserving of a curse, having become the cause of the earth's destruction; therefore, curse me.
न हि मे जीवितेनार्थो न राज्येन धनेन वा। तादृशान्सुहृदो हत्वा मूढस्यास्य सुहृद्द्रुहः ॥११-१५-४॥
na hi me jīvitena arthaḥ na rājyena dhanena vā। tādṛśān suhṛdaḥ hatvā mūḍhasya asya suhṛd-druhaḥ ॥11-15-4॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; जीवितेन (jīvitena) - by life; अर्थः (arthaḥ) - purpose; न (na) - not; राज्येन (rājyena) - by kingdom; धनेन (dhanena) - by wealth; वा (vā) - or; तादृशान् (tādṛśān) - such; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; हत्वा (hatvā) - having killed; मूढस्य (mūḍhasya) - of the deluded; अस्य (asya) - of this; सुहृद्द्रुहः (suhṛd-druhaḥ) - enemy of friends;]
(Indeed, for me there is no purpose by life, nor by kingdom or by wealth; having killed such friends, of this deluded one, the enemy of friends.)
Truly, I have no desire for life, kingdom, or wealth; for, having slain such friends for the sake of this deluded enemy of friends, I find no purpose in them.
तमेवंवादिनं भीतं संनिकर्षगतं तदा। नोवाच किञ्चिद्गान्धारी निःश्वासपरमा भृशम् ॥११-१५-५॥
tam evaṃ-vādinam bhītam saṃnikarṣa-gatam tadā। na uvāca kiñcid gāndhārī niḥśvāsa-paramā bhṛśam ॥11-15-5॥

(Then, Gandhari, greatly absorbed in sighing, did not speak anything to him, who was thus speaking, frightened, and had approached.)
Then Gandhari, deeply sighing, did not say anything to him, though he was frightened, had come near, and was speaking thus.
तस्यावनतदेहस्य पादयोर्निपतिष्यतः। युधिष्ठिरस्य नृपतेर्धर्मज्ञा धर्मदर्शिनी ॥ अङ्गुल्यग्राणि ददृशे देवी पट्टान्तरेण सा ॥११-१५-६॥
tasyāvanatadehasya pādayor nipatiṣyataḥ। yudhiṣṭhirasya nṛpater dharmajñā dharmadarśinī ॥ aṅgulyagrāṇi dadṛśe devī paṭṭāntareṇa sā ॥11-15-6॥

(Of him, with bent body, falling at the feet; of Yudhishthira, the king, the knower of dharma, the perceiver of dharma; the goddess saw the tips of the fingers through the edge of the cloth, she.)
As he, with his body bent, was falling at the feet of King Yudhishthira, the knower and perceiver of dharma, the goddess saw the tips of his fingers through the edge of the cloth.
ततः स कुनकीभूतो दर्शनीयनखो नृपः। तं दृष्ट्वा चार्जुनोऽगच्छद्वासुदेवस्य पृष्ठतः ॥११-१५-७॥
tataḥ sa kunakībhūto darśanīyanakho nṛpaḥ। taṃ dṛṣṭvā cārjuno'gacchadvāsudevasya pṛṣṭhataḥ ॥11-15-7॥

(Then he, having become deformed in the nails, the king worthy of being seen; having seen him, Arjuna went behind Vāsudeva.)
Then, the king, whose nails had become deformed and who was worthy of being seen, was seen by Arjuna, who then went behind Vāsudeva.
एवं सञ्चेष्टमानांस्तानितश्चेतश्च भारत। गान्धारी विगतक्रोधा सान्त्वयामास मातृवत् ॥११-१५-८॥
evaṃ sañceṣṭamānāṃs tān itaś cetaś ca bhārata। gāndhārī vigatakrodhā sāntvayāmāsa mātṛvat ॥11-15-8॥

(Thus, those moving about here and there, O Bhārata, Gāndhārī, whose anger had subsided, consoled like a mother.)
O Bhārata, seeing them moving about here and there in such a manner, Gāndhārī, her anger gone, consoled them as a mother would.
तया ते समनुज्ञाता मातरं वीरमातरम्। अभ्यगच्छन्त सहिताः पृथां पृथुलवक्षसः ॥११-१५-९॥
tayā te samanujñātā mātaraṃ vīramātaram। abhyagacchanta sahitāḥ pṛthāṃ pṛthulavakṣasaḥ ॥11-15-9॥

चिरस्य दृष्ट्वा पुत्रान्सा पुत्राधिभिरभिप्लुता। बाष्पमाहारयद्देवी वस्त्रेणावृत्य वै मुखम् ॥११-१५-१०॥
cirasya dṛṣṭvā putrānsā putrādhibhirabhiplutā। bāṣpamāhārayaddevī vastreṇāvṛtya vai mukham ॥11-15-10॥
[चिरस्य (cirasya) - after a long time; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; सा (sā) - she; पुत्राधिभिः (putrādhibhiḥ) - with grief for her sons; अभिप्लुता (abhiplutā) - overwhelmed; बाष्पम् (bāṣpam) - tears; आहारयत् (āhārayat) - shed; देवी (devī) - the lady; वस्त्रेण (vastreṇa) - with a cloth; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having covered; वै (vai) - indeed; मुखम् (mukham) - face;]
(After a long time, having seen her sons, she, overwhelmed with grief for her sons, the lady shed tears, having covered her face indeed with a cloth.)
After a long time, upon seeing her sons, she, overwhelmed with grief for them, covered her face with a cloth and shed tears.
ततो बाष्पं समुत्सृज्य सह पुत्रैस्तथा पृथा। अपश्यदेताञ्शस्त्रौघैर्बहुधा परिविक्षतान् ॥११-१५-११॥
tato bāṣpaṃ samutsṛjya saha putraistathā pṛthā। apaśyadetāñśastraughairbahudhā parivikṣatān ॥11-15-11॥

(Then, having shed tears with her sons thus, Pṛthā saw these (sons) wounded all over in many ways by showers of weapons.)

सा तानेकैकशः पुत्रान्संस्पृशन्ती पुनः पुनः। अन्वशोचन्त दुःखार्ता द्रौपदीं च हतात्मजाम् ॥ रुदतीमथ पाञ्चालीं ददर्श पतितां भुवि ॥११-१५-१२॥
sā tān ekaikaśaḥ putrān saṃspṛśantī punaḥ punaḥ। anvaśocanta duḥkhārtā draupadīṃ ca hatātmajām॥ rudatīm atha pāñcālīṃ dadarśa patitāṃ bhuvi॥11-15-12॥

(She, touching her sons one by one again and again, lamented, afflicted with grief, and Draupadī, whose sons were slain, weeping, then saw Pāñcālī fallen on the ground.)

आर्ये पौत्राः क्व ते सर्वे सौभद्रसहिता गताः। न त्वां तेऽद्याभिगच्छन्ति चिरदृष्टां तपस्विनीम् ॥ किं नु राज्येन वै कार्यं विहीनायाः सुतैर्मम ॥११-१५-१३॥
ārye pautrāḥ kva te sarve saubhadra-sahitā gatāḥ। na tvāṃ te'dyābhigacchanti ciradṛṣṭāṃ tapasvinīm॥ kiṃ nu rājyena vai kāryaṃ vihīnāyāḥ sutair mama॥11-15-13॥

(O noble lady, where have all your grandsons, together with Saubhadra, gone? They do not approach you today, the long-unseen ascetic lady. What indeed is the purpose of the kingdom for me, bereft of sons?)
O noble lady, where have all your grandsons, including Saubhadra, gone? Today, they do not come to you, who have long been unseen and are devoted to austerity. What use is the kingdom to me, now that I am bereft of my sons?
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

तां समाश्वासयामास पृथा पृथुललोचना। उत्थाप्य याज्ञसेनीं तु रुदतीं शोककर्शिताम् ॥११-१५-१४॥
tāṃ samāśvāsayāmāsa pṛthā pṛthulalocanā। utthāpya yājñasenīṃ tu rudatīṃ śokakarśitām ॥11-15-14॥

तयैव सहिता चापि पुत्रैरनुगता पृथा। अभ्यगच्छत गान्धारीमार्तामार्ततरा स्वयम् ॥११-१५-१५॥
tayāiva sahitā cāpi putrair anugatā pṛthā। abhyagacchata gāndhārīm ārtām ārtatarā svayam ॥11-15-15॥

तामुवाचाथ गान्धारी सह वध्वा यशस्विनीम्। मैवं पुत्रीति शोकार्ता पश्य मामपि दुःखिताम् ॥११-१५-१६॥

(Then Gandhari said to her, together with the bride, the illustrious one: "Do not be thus, O daughter," (she said), afflicted by grief, "see me also sorrowful.")
Then Gandhari, together with the illustrious bride, said to her: "Do not be like this, my daughter; see, I too am sorrowful."
मnye लोकविनाशोऽयं कालपर्यायचोदितः। अवश्यभावी सम्प्राप्तः स्वभावाल्लोमहर्षणः ॥११-१५-१७॥
manye lokavināśo'yaṃ kālaparyāyacoditaḥ। avaśyabhāvī samprāptaḥ svabhāvallomaharṣaṇaḥ ॥11-15-17॥
[मnye (manye) - I think; लोकविनाशः (lokavināśaḥ) - destruction of the world; अयम् (ayam) - this; कालपर्यायचोदितः (kālaparyāyacoditaḥ) - impelled by the turn of time; अवश्यभावी (avaśyabhāvī) - certain to happen; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - has arrived; स्वभावात् (svabhāvāt) - by its own nature; लोमहर्षणः (lomaharṣaṇaḥ) - hair-raising; ॥११-१५-१७॥ (॥11-15-17॥) -;]
(I think this destruction of the world, impelled by the turn of time, is certain to happen; it has arrived, hair-raising by its own nature.)
I believe this destruction of the world, driven by the course of time, is inevitable; it has come, terrifying by its very nature.
इदं तत्समनुप्राप्तं विदुरस्य वचो महत्। असिद्धानुनये कृष्णे यदुवाच महामतिः ॥११-१५-१८॥
idaṃ tatsamanuprāptaṃ vidurasya vaco mahat। asiddhānunaye kṛṣṇe yaduvāca mahāmatiḥ ॥11-15-18॥

(This that was completely attained, the great speech of Vidura, in the unaccomplished conciliation to Kṛṣṇa, Yadu (the great-minded one) said:)
This is that great speech of Vidura, which was delivered by the wise one of the Yadu race to Kṛṣṇa when the conciliation had failed.
तस्मिन्नपरिहार्येऽर्थे व्यतीते च विशेषतः। मा शुचो न हि शोच्यास्ते सङ्ग्रामे निधनं गताः ॥११-१५-१९॥
tasminnaparihārye'rthe vyatīte ca viśeṣataḥ। mā śuco na hi śocyāste saṅgrāme nidhanaṃ gatāḥ ॥11-15-19॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; अपरिहार्ये (aparihārye) - inevitable; अर्थे (arthe) - situation; व्यतीते (vyatīte) - having passed; च (ca) - and; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially; मा (mā) - do not; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; शोच्याः (śocyāḥ) - to be grieved for; ते (te) - they; सङ्ग्रामे (saṅgrāme) - in battle; निधनम् (nidhanaṃ) - death; गताः (gatāḥ) - have attained;]
(In that inevitable situation, having passed especially, do not grieve; indeed, they are not to be grieved for, those who have attained death in battle.)
In that inevitable situation, especially after it has passed, do not grieve; for those who have met death in battle are not to be mourned.
यथैव त्वं तथैवाहं को वा माश्वासयिष्यति। ममैव ह्यपराधेन कुलमग्र्यं विनाशितम् ॥११-१५-२०॥
yathaiva tvaṃ tathaivāhaṃ ko vā māśvāsayiṣyati। mamaiva hyaparādhena kulamagryaṃ vināśitam ॥11-15-20॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; तथा (tathā) - so; एव (eva) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; कः (kaḥ) - who; वा (vā) - or; माम् (mām) - me; आश्वासयिष्यति (āśvāsayiṣyati) - will console; मम (mama) - my; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - for; अपराधेन (aparādhena) - by fault; कुलम् (kulam) - family; अग्र्यम् (agryam) - foremost; विनाशितम् (vināśitam) - destroyed;]
(Just as you, so indeed I; who will console me? For by my very fault, the foremost family has been destroyed.)
Just as you are, so am I; who then will console me? For it is by my own fault that the noble family has been destroyed.
