एष वैकर्तनः शेते महेष्वासो महारथः। ज्वलितानलवत्सङ्ख्ये संशान्तः पार्थतेजसा ॥११-२१-१॥
eṣa vaikartanaḥ śete maheṣvāso mahārathaḥ। jvalitānalavat saṅkhye saṃśāntaḥ pārthatejasā ॥11-21-1॥

यं स्म पाण्डवसन्त्रासान्मम पुत्रा महारथाः। प्रायुध्यन्त पुरस्कृत्य मातङ्गा इव यूथपम् ॥११-२१-४॥

(Whom indeed, from fear of the Pāṇḍavas, my sons, the great chariot-warriors, fought, placing in front, like elephants (do) the leader of the herd.)

Just as a tiger is struck down by a lion in battle by Savyasācin (Arjuna), and just as an elephant is struck down by an intoxicated elephant, so was he struck down.
समेताः पुरुषव्याघ्र निहतं शूरमाहवे। प्रकीर्णमूर्धजाः पत्न्यो रुदत्यः पर्युपासते ॥११-२१-६॥
sametāḥ puruṣavyāghra nihataṃ śūramāhave। prakīrṇamūrdhajāḥ patnyo rudatyaḥ paryupāsate ॥11-21-6॥
[समेताः (sametāḥ) - having assembled; पुरुषव्याघ्र (puruṣavyāghra) - tiger among men; निहतं (nihataṃ) - slain; शूरम् (śūram) - hero; आहवे (āhave) - in battle; प्रकीर्णमूर्धजाः (prakīrṇamūrdhajāḥ) - with disheveled hair; पत्न्यः (patnyaḥ) - wives; रुदत्यः (rudatyaḥ) - weeping; पर्युपासते (paryupāsate) - surround;]
(Having assembled, O tiger among men, the wives with disheveled hair, weeping, surround the slain hero in battle.)

(Because of which Dharmarāja Yudhiṣṭhira, constantly disturbed, thinking, did not attain sleep for thirteen years.)

अनाधृष्यः परैर्युद्धे शत्रुभिर्मघवानिव। युगान्ताग्निरिवार्चिष्मान्हिमवानिव च स्थिरः ॥११-२१-८॥

(Not to be overcome by others in battle by enemies, like Maghavan (Indra); like the fire at the end of an age, radiant; like Himavat (the Himalaya), and firm.)

पश्य कर्णस्य पत्नीं त्वं वृषसेनस्य मातरम्। लालप्यमानाः करुणं रुदतीं पतितां भुवि ॥११-२१-१०॥

आचार्यशापोऽनुगतो ध्रुवं त्वां; यदग्रसच्चक्रमियं धरा ते। ततः शरेणापहृतं शिरस्ते; धनञ्जयेनाहवे शत्रुमध्ये ॥११-२१-११॥

(The teacher's curse certainly followed you; as a result, this earth, with the wheel at the front, is yours. Then your head was taken away by an arrow, by Dhananjaya in battle, in the midst of enemies.)

अहो धिगेषा पतिता विसञ्ज्ञा; समीक्ष्य जाम्बूनदबद्धनिष्कम्। कर्णं महाबाहुमदीनसत्त्वं; सुषेणमाता रुदती भृशार्ता ॥११-२१-१२॥

[अहो (aho) - alas; धिग् (dhig) - fie; एषा (eṣā) - this (woman); पतिता (patitā) - fallen; विसञ्ज्ञा (visañjñā) - unconscious; समीक्ष्य (samīkṣya) - having seen; जाम्बूनद (jāmbūnada) - of gold; बद्ध (baddha) - bound; निष्कम् (niṣkam) - necklace; कर्णम् (karṇam) - Karna; महाबाहु (mahābāhu) - mighty-armed; मदीन (madīna) - distressed; सत्त्वम् (sattvam) - spirit; सुषेणमाता (suṣeṇamātā) - Suṣeṇa's mother; रुदती (rudatī) - weeping; भृश (bhṛśa) - greatly; आर्ता (ārtā) - afflicted;]
(Alas, fie, this (woman) fallen, unconscious; having seen the gold-bound necklace on Karna, the mighty-armed, distressed in spirit; Suṣeṇa's mother, weeping, greatly afflicted.)

अल्पावशेषो हि कृतो महात्मा; शरीरभक्षैः परिभक्षयद्भिः। द्रष्टुं न सम्प्रीतिकरः शशीव; कृष्णश्य पक्षस्य चतुर्दशाहे ॥११-२१-१३॥
alpāvaśeṣo hi kṛto mahātmā; śarīrabhakṣaiḥ paribhakṣayadbhiḥ. draṣṭuṃ na samprītikaraḥ śaśīva; kṛṣṇaśya pakṣasya caturdaśāhe ॥11-21-13॥
[अल्प-अवशेषः (alpa-avaśeṣaḥ) - little-remains; हि (hi) - indeed; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - made; महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled one; शरीर-भक्षैः (śarīra-bhakṣaiḥ) - by body-eaters; परि-भक्षयद्भिः (pari-bhakṣayadbhiḥ) - by those who eat all around; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; न (na) - not; सम्प्रीति-करः (samprīti-karaḥ) - pleasing; शशी-इव (śaśī-iva) - like the moon; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of the dark; पक्षस्य (pakṣasya) - of the fortnight; चतुर्दश-अहे (caturdaśa-ahe) - on the fourteenth day;]
(Indeed, the great-souled one was left with little remains, having been consumed by body-eaters all around; not pleasing to see, like the moon on the fourteenth day of the dark fortnight.)
