अध्यर्धगुणमाहुर्यं बले शौर्ये च माधव। पित्रा त्वया च दाशार्ह दृप्तं सिंहमिवोत्कटम् ॥११-२०-१॥
adhyardhaguṇam āhur yaṃ bale śaurye ca mādhava। pitrā tvayā ca dāśārha dṛptaṃ siṃham ivotkaṭam ॥11-20-1॥
[अध्यर्धगुणम् (adhyardhaguṇam) - increased by half in quality; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; यम् (yam) - which; बले (bale) - in strength; शौर्ये (śaurye) - in heroism; च (ca) - and; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava; पित्रा (pitrā) - by (your) father; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; च (ca) - and; दाशार्ह (dāśārha) - O descendant of the Daśārhas; दृप्तम् (dṛptam) - proud; सिंहम् (siṃham) - lion; इव (iva) - like; उत्कटम् (utkaṭam) - fierce;]
(They say that which is increased by half in quality, O Mādhava, in strength and heroism, by your father and by you, O descendant of the Daśārhas, (is) proud, like a fierce lion.)

यो बिभेद चमूमेको मम पुत्रस्य दुर्भिदाम्। स भूत्वा मृत्युरन्येषां स्वयं मृत्युवशं गतः ॥११-२०-२॥
yo bibheda camūm-eko mama putrasya durbhidām। sa bhūtvā mṛtyuranyeṣāṃ svayaṃ mṛtyuvaśaṃ gataḥ ॥11-20-2॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; बिभेद (bibheda) - broke; चमूम् (camūm) - army; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; मम (mama) - my; पुत्रस्य (putrasya) - son's; दुर्भिदाम् (durbhidām) - difficult to break; सः (saḥ) - he; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; अन्येषाम् (anyeṣām) - of others; स्वयम् (svayam) - himself; मृत्युवशं (mṛtyuvaśam) - under the control of death; गतः (gataḥ) - went;]
(Who alone broke the army, difficult to break, of my son; he, having become death of others, himself went under the control of death.)
He who alone broke through the army, difficult to break, of my son—he, who became the death of others, himself has now gone under the sway of death.
तस्योपलक्षये कृष्ण कार्ष्णेरमिततेजसः। अभिमन्योर्हतस्यापि प्रभा नैवोपशाम्यति ॥११-२०-३॥
tasyopalakṣaye kṛṣṇa kārṣṇeramitatejasaḥ। abhimanyorhatasya api prabhā naiva upaśāmyati ॥11-20-3॥

(Of him I perceive, O Kṛṣṇa, of the son of Kṛṣṇa of immeasurable splendor, even though Abhimanyu is slain, his radiance does not indeed subside.)
O Kṛṣṇa, I perceive that even though Abhimanyu, the son of Kṛṣṇa of immeasurable splendor, has been slain, his radiance does not fade away.
एषा विराटदुहिता स्नुषा गाण्डीवधन्वनः। आर्ता बाला पतिं वीरं शोच्या शोचत्यनिन्दिता ॥११-२०-४॥
eṣā virāṭaduhitā snuṣā gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ। ārtā bālā patiṃ vīraṃ śocyā śocyatyaninditā ॥11-20-4॥

(This (girl), Virāṭa's daughter, the daughter-in-law of the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow, afflicted, young, for her husband, the hero, worthy of lamentation, laments, blameless.)
This is Virāṭa's daughter, the daughter-in-law of the wielder of the Gāṇḍīva bow; afflicted and young, the blameless girl laments for her heroic husband, who is worthy of lamentation.
तमेषा हि समासाद्य भार्या भर्तारमन्तिके। विराटदुहिता कृष्ण पाणिना परिमार्जति ॥११-२०-५॥
tameṣā hi samāsādya bhāryā bhartāram-antike। virāṭa-duhitā kṛṣṇa pāṇinā parimārjati ॥11-20-5॥

तस्य वक्त्रमुपाघ्राय सौभद्रस्य यशस्विनी। विबुद्धकमलाकारं कम्बुवृत्तशिरोधरम् ॥११-२०-६॥
tasya vaktram upāghrāya saubhadrasya yaśasvinī। vibuddha-kamalākāraṃ kambuvṛtta-śirodharam ॥11-20-6॥

काम्यरूपवती चैषा परिष्वजति भामिनी। लज्जमाना पुरेवैनं माध्वीकमदमूर्छिता ॥११-२०-७॥
kāmyarūpavatī caiṣā pariṣvajati bhāminī। lajjamānā pureva enaṃ mādhvīkamadamūrcchitā ॥11-20-7॥

तस्य क्षतजसंदिग्धं जातरूपपरिष्कृतम्। विमुच्य कवचं कृष्ण शरीरमभिवीक्षते ॥११-२०-८॥
tasya kṣataja-saṃdigdhaṃ jātarūpa-pariṣkṛtam। vimucya kavacaṃ kṛṣṇa śarīram abhivīkṣate ॥11-20-8॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; क्षतज (kṣataja) - blood; संदिग्धं (saṃdigdham) - smeared; जातरूप (jātarūpa) - gold; परिष्कृतम् (pariṣkṛtam) - adorned; विमुच्य (vimucya) - having removed; कवचं (kavacam) - armor; कृष्ण (kṛṣṇa) - Kṛṣṇa; शरीरम् (śarīram) - body; अभिवीक्षते (abhivīkṣate) - looks at;]

अवेक्षमाणा तं बाला कृष्ण त्वामभिभाषते। अयं ते पुण्डरीकाक्ष सदृशाक्षो निपातितः ॥११-२०-९॥
avekṣamāṇā taṃ bālā kṛṣṇa tvām abhibhāṣate। ayaṃ te puṇḍarīkākṣa sadṛśākṣo nipātitaḥ ॥11-20-9॥

(Observing him, the girl speaks to you, O Kṛṣṇa: "This one, O lotus-eyed, with eyes like yours, has been struck down.")
Seeing him, the girl said to you, O Kṛṣṇa: "This one, O lotus-eyed, whose eyes resemble yours, has been struck down."
बले वीर्ये च सदृशस्तेजसा चैव तेऽनघ। रूपेण च तवात्यर्थं शेते भुवि निपातितः ॥११-२०-१०॥
bale vīrye ca sadṛśastejasā caiva te'nagha। rūpeṇa ca tavātyarthaṃ śete bhuvi nipātitaḥ ॥11-20-10॥
[बले (bale) - in strength; वीर्ये (vīrye) - in heroism; च (ca) - and; सदृशः (sadṛśaḥ) - equal; तेजसा (tejasā) - in brilliance; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ते (te) - to you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - in form; च (ca) - and; तव (tava) - your; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - exceedingly; शेते (śete) - lies; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the ground; निपातितः (nipātitaḥ) - struck down;]
(In strength, in heroism, and in brilliance, he is equal to you, O sinless one; and in form, he lies exceedingly (beautiful), struck down on the ground.)

अत्यन्तसुकुमारस्य राङ्कवाजिनशायिनः। कच्चिदद्य शरीरं ते भूमौ न परितप्यते ॥११-२०-११॥
atyantasukumārasya rāṅkavājinaśāyinaḥ। kaccidadya śarīraṃ te bhūmau na paritapyate ॥11-20-11॥
[अत्यन्त (atyanta) - excessively; thoroughly; सुकुमारस्य (sukumārasya) - of the very tender; delicate; राङ्क (rāṅka) - of the mendicant; वाजिन (vājina) - horse; steed; शायिनः (śāyinaḥ) - one who lies (on); कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; surely; अद्य (adya) - today; शरीरं (śarīraṃ) - body; ते (te) - your; भूमौ (bhūmau) - on the ground; न (na) - not; परितप्यते (paritapyate) - is tormented; is afflicted;]
(Of the excessively tender one, who lies on the mendicant's horse, is your body today not tormented on the ground?)
Is your body, so exceedingly delicate and accustomed to resting on the mendicant's horse, not suffering today as you lie on the ground?
मातङ्गभुजवर्ष्माणौ ज्याक्षेपकठिनत्वचौ। काञ्चनाङ्गदिनौ शेषे निक्षिप्य विपुलौ भुजौ ॥११-२०-१२॥
mātaṅga-bhuja-varṣmāṇau jyākṣepa-kaṭhinatvacau। kāñcana-aṅgadinau śeṣe nikṣipya vipulau bhujau ॥11-20-12॥
[मातङ्ग (mātaṅga) - elephant; भुज (bhuja) - arm; वर्ष्माणौ (varṣmāṇau) - having the form; ज्या (jyā) - bowstring; क्षेप (kṣepa) - drawing; कठिन (kaṭhina) - hard; त्वचौ (tvacau) - skin; काञ्चन (kāñcana) - gold; अङ्गदिनौ (aṅgadinau) - with armlets; शेषे (śeṣe) - on the bed; निक्षिप्य (nikṣipya) - having placed; विपुलौ (vipulau) - broad; भुजौ (bhujau) - arms;]

(Having exerted in many ways, certainly, you, as if one who sleeps comfortably from fatigue, do not indeed address me, who is thus lamenting and afflicted.)
Though you have exerted yourself in many ways and now seem to sleep soundly from fatigue, you do not speak to me, who am thus lamenting and afflicted.
आर्यामार्य सुभद्रां त्वमिमांश्च त्रिदशोपमान्। पितॄन्मां चैव दुःखार्तां विहाय क्व गमिष्यसि ॥११-२०-१४॥
āryām ārya subhadrāṃ tvam imāṃś ca tridaśopamān | pitṝn māṃ caiva duḥkhārtāṃ vihāya kva gamiṣyasi ||11-20-14||

(The noble lady, O noble one, Subhadrā, you, and these equal to the gods, the ancestors, me indeed afflicted by sorrow, abandoning (all these), where will you go?)

तस्य शोणितसंदिग्धान्केशानुन्नाम्य पाणिना। उत्सङ्गे वक्त्रमाधाय जीवन्तमिव पृच्छति ॥ स्वस्रीयं वासुदेवस्य पुत्रं गाण्डीवधन्वनः ॥११-२०-१५॥
tasya śoṇitasandigdhān keśān unnāmya pāṇinā। utsaṅge vaktram ādhāya jīvantam iva pṛcchati॥ svasrīyaṃ vāsudevasya putraṃ gāṇḍīvadhanvanaḥ॥ 11-20-15॥

(Of him, having lifted the blood-smeared hairs with (his) hand, having placed (his) face on (his) lap, as if living, he asks the sister's son of Vāsudeva, the son of the wielder of Gāṇḍīva.)

कथं त्वां रणमध्यस्थं जघ्नुरेते महारथाः। धिगस्तु क्रूरकर्तॄंस्तान्कृपकर्णजयद्रथान् ॥११-२०-१६॥
kathaṁ tvāṁ raṇamadhyasthaṁ jaghnuretē mahārathāḥ। dhigastu krūrakartṝṁstānkṛpakarṇajayadrathān ॥11-20-16॥

(How did these great chariot-warriors strike you, standing in the midst of battle? Shame be upon those cruel-doers, Kṛpa, Karṇa, and Jayadratha.)
How could these great warriors, Kṛpa, Karṇa, and Jayadratha, attack you in the midst of battle? Shame on such cruel men.
द्रोणद्रौणायनी चोभौ यैरसि व्यसनीकृतः। रथर्षभाणां सर्वेषां कथमासीत्तदा मनः ॥११-२०-१७॥
droṇadrauṇāyanī cobhau yair asi vyasanīkṛtaḥ। ratharṣabhāṇāṃ sarveṣāṃ katham āsīt tadā manaḥ ॥11-20-17॥

(Droṇa and the son of Droṇa, both, by whom you are afflicted with calamity—of all the best among chariot-warriors, how was the mind then?)
How was the mind of all the foremost chariot-warriors then, when you were afflicted by both Droṇa and the son of Droṇa?
बालं त्वां परिवार्यैकं मम दुःखाय जघ्नुषाम्। कथं नु पाण्डवानां च पाञ्चालानां च पश्यताम् ॥ त्वं वीर निधनं प्राप्तो नाथवान्सन्ननाथवत् ॥११-२०-१८॥
bālaṃ tvāṃ parivāryaikaṃ mama duḥkhāya jaghnuṣām| kathaṃ nu pāṇḍavānāṃ ca pāñcālānāṃ ca paśyatām ॥ tvaṃ vīra nidhanaṃ prāpto nāthavān sannanāthavat ॥11-20-18॥

(Having surrounded you, a child, alone, for my sorrow, of those who have slain. How indeed, while the Pāṇḍavas and the Pāñcālas are watching, you, O hero, have attained death, being one with a protector, like one without a protector.)

How does the heroic Pāṇḍava, the tiger among men, continue to live after seeing you slain, as if without protector, amidst the lamentations of many?
न राज्यलाभो विपुलः शत्रूणां वा पराभवः। प्रीतिं दास्यति पार्थानां त्वामृते पुष्करेक्षण ॥११-२०-२०॥

(Not the great gain of kingdom or the defeat of enemies will give joy to the sons of Pṛthā without you, O lotus-eyed one.)
O lotus-eyed one, without you, neither the great gain of kingdom nor the defeat of enemies will bring joy to the sons of Pṛthā.
तव शस्त्रजिताँल्लोकान्धर्मेण च दमेन च। क्षिप्रमन्वागमिष्यामि तत्र मां प्रतिपालय ॥११-२०-२१॥
tava śastrajitāṁllokāndharmeṇa ca damena ca। kṣipram anvāgamiṣyāmi tatra māṁ pratipālaya ॥11-20-21॥
[तव (tava) - your; शस्त्रजितान् (śastrajitān) - conquered by weapons; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; च (ca) - and; दमेन (damena) - by self-restraint; च (ca) - and; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; अन्व्-आगमिष्यामि (anv-āgamiṣyāmi) - I shall follow after; तत्र (tatra) - there; माम् (mām) - me; प्रतिपालय (pratipālaya) - wait for;]
(Your worlds conquered by weapons, by righteousness and by self-restraint, I shall quickly follow after; there, wait for me.)
I will quickly follow you to those worlds you have conquered by weapons, righteousness, and self-restraint; wait for me there.
दुर्मरं पुनरप्राप्ते काले भवति केनचित्। यदहं त्वां रणे दृष्ट्वा हतं जीवामि दुर्भगा ॥११-२०-२२॥
durmaraṃ punaraprāpte kāle bhavati kenacit। yadahaṃ tvāṃ raṇe dṛṣṭvā hataṃ jīvāmi durbhagā ॥11-20-22॥

(It is hard to bear, when at some time again it happens that I, the unfortunate, live having seen you slain in battle by someone.)
It is unbearable for me, the unfortunate one, that I am alive after seeing you slain in battle by someone.
कामिदानीं नरव्याघ्र श्लक्ष्णया स्मितया गिरा। पितृलोके समेत्यान्यां मामिवामन्त्रयिष्यसि ॥११-२०-२३॥
kāmidānīṃ naravyāghra ślakṣṇayā smitayā girā। pitṛloke sametānyāṃ māmivāmantrayiṣyasi ॥11-20-23॥
[कामि (kāmi) - desiring; इदानीं (idānīṃ) - now; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; श्लक्ष्णया (ślakṣṇayā) - gentle; स्मितया (smitayā) - with a smile; गिरा (girā) - with speech; पितृलोके (pitṛloke) - in the world of ancestors; समेत्य (sametya) - having arrived; अन्यां (anyāṃ) - another; माम् (mām) - me; इव (iva) - like; आमन्त्रयिष्यसि (āmantrayiṣyasi) - you will address;]
(Desiring now, O tiger among men, with gentle, smiling speech, having arrived in the world of ancestors, you will address another like me.)
Now, O tiger among men, with gentle and smiling words, when you reach the world of the ancestors, you will speak to another woman like me.
नूनमप्सरसां स्वर्गे मनांसि प्रमथिष्यसि। परमेण च रूपेण गिरा च स्मितपूर्वया ॥११-२०-२४॥
nūnam apsarasāṃ svarge manāṃsi pramathiṣyasi। parameṇa ca rūpeṇa girā ca smitapūrvayā ॥11-20-24॥
[नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; अप्सरसाम् (apsarasām) - of the apsarases; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; मनांसि (manāṃsi) - minds; प्रमथिष्यसि (pramathiṣyasi) - you will agitate; परमेण (parameṇa) - with supreme; च (ca) - and; रूपेण (rūpeṇa) - beauty; गिरा (girā) - with speech; च (ca) - and; स्मितपूर्वया (smitapūrvayā) - with a prior smile;]
(Certainly, in heaven, the minds of the apsarases you will agitate with supreme beauty and with speech and with a prior smile.)
Certainly, in heaven, you will captivate the minds of the apsarases with your supreme beauty, your words, and your gentle smile.
प्राप्य पुण्यकृताँल्लोकानप्सरोभिः समेयिवान्। सौभद्र विहरन्काले स्मरेथाः सुकृतानि मे ॥११-२०-२५॥
prāpya puṇyakṛtāṃllokānapasarobhiḥ sameyivān। saubhadra viharankāle smarethāḥ sukṛtāni me ॥11-20-25॥
[प्राप्य (prāpya) - having attained; पुण्यकृताम् (puṇyakṛtām) - of the doers of merit; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अप्सरोभिः (apsarobhiḥ) - with apsarases; समेयिवान् (sameyivān) - having united; सौभद्र (saubhadra) - O son of Subhadra; विहरन् (viharān) - enjoying; काले (kāle) - at the time; स्मरेथाः (smarethāḥ) - you should remember; सुकृतानि (sukṛtāni) - good deeds; मे (me) - of mine;]
(Having attained the worlds of the doers of merit and united with apsarases, O son of Subhadra, while enjoying at that time, you should remember my good deeds.)
O son of Subhadra, when you reach the worlds of the virtuous and are united with apsarases, remember my good deeds while you enjoy there.
एतावानिह संवासो विहितस्ते मया सह। षण्मासान्सप्तमे मासि त्वं वीर निधनं गतः ॥११-२०-२६॥
etāvāniha saṃvāso vihitaste mayā saha। ṣaṇmāsānsaptame māsi tvaṃ vīra nidhanaṃ gataḥ ॥11-20-26॥

(So much here cohabitation was arranged for you by me with (me); six months, in the seventh month, you, O hero, death reached.)
This much was our time together here, arranged by me with you; after six months, in the seventh month, O hero, you met your death.
इत्युक्तवचनामेतामपकर्षन्ति दुःखिताम्। उत्तरां मोघसङ्कल्पां मत्स्यराजकुलस्त्रियः ॥११-२०-२७॥
ity-ukta-vacanām etām apakarṣanti duḥkhitām। uttarāṃ moghasaṅkalpāṃ matsyarājakulastriyaḥ ॥11-20-27॥

(Thus having spoken these words, they drag away this distressed Uttarā, whose resolve is vain, the women of the Matsya royal family.)

उत्तरामपकृष्यैनामार्तामार्ततराः स्वयम्। विराटं निहतं दृष्ट्वा क्रोशन्ति विलपन्ति च ॥११-२०-२८॥
uttarām apakṛṣya enām ārtām ārtatarāḥ svayam। virāṭam nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā krośanti vilapanti ca ॥11-20-28॥

वितुद्यमानं विहगैर्विराटमसितेक्षणाः। न शक्नुवन्ति विवशा निवर्तयितुमातुराः ॥११-२०-३०॥
