Core and Pancharatra: Krishna says all miseries due to war are self-caused; Yudhishthira describes how, based on the state of mind while dying, different warriors attained different worlds; Yudhishthira orders final rights for every dead body found on the battlefield.
वासुदेव उवाच॥
Vāsudeva said:
उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ गान्धारि मा च शोके मनः कृथाः। तवैव ह्यपराधेन कुरवो निधनं गताः ॥११-२६-१॥
Arise, arise, O Gandhari! Do not let your mind dwell in grief; for it is by your own offence that the Kurus have met their destruction.
या त्वं पुत्रं दुरात्मानमीर्षुमत्यन्तमानिनम्। दुर्योधनं पुरस्कृत्य दुष्कृतं साधु मन्यसे ॥११-२६-२॥
You consider your son Duryodhana, who is wicked-souled, envious, and arrogant, having set forth an evil-doer, as good.
निष्ठुरं वैरपरुषं वृद्धानां शासनातिगम्। कथमात्मकृतं दोषं मय्याधातुमिहेच्छसि ॥११-२६-३॥
How do you wish to attribute to me here a fault that is cruel, harsh, and a transgression of the elders' command, when it is self-caused?
मृतं वा यदि वा नष्टं योऽतीतमनुशोचति। दुःखेन लभते दुःखं द्वावनर्थौ प्रपद्यते ॥११-२६-४॥
Whoever grieves for what is dead, lost, or past, only gains more sorrow and falls into twofold misfortune.
तपोर्थीयं ब्राह्मणी धत्त गर्भं; गौर्वोढारं धावितारं तुरङ्गी। शूद्रा दासं पशुपालं तु वैश्या; वधार्थीयं त्वद्विधा राजपुत्री ॥११-२६-५॥
A brāhmaṇa woman gives birth for the sake of austerity, a cow gives birth to a draught animal, a mare gives birth to a runner. A śūdra woman gives birth to a servant, a vaiśya woman to a herdsman; but a princess like you is born for the purpose of destruction.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said:
तच्छ्रुत्वा वासुदेवस्य पुनरुक्तं वचोऽप्रियम्। तूष्णीं बभूव गान्धारी शोकव्याकुललोचना ॥११-२६-६॥
When Gāndhārī heard that repeated unpleasant speech of Vāsudeva, her eyes filled with grief, she became silent.
धृतराष्ट्रस्तु राजर्षिर्निगृह्याबुद्धिजं तमः। पर्यपृच्छत धर्मात्मा धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥११-२६-७॥
But King Dhritarashtra, the royal sage, having controlled the darkness born of ignorance, righteously questioned Dharmaraja Yudhishthira.
जीवतां परिमाणज्ञः सैन्यानामसि पाण्डव। हतानां यदि जानीषे परिमाणं वदस्व मे ॥११-२६-८॥
O Pāṇḍava, you know the number of the living soldiers in the armies. If you know the number of those who have been slain, please tell me.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhishthira said:
दशायुतानामयुतं सहस्राणि च विंशतिः। कोट्यः षष्टिश्च षट्चैव येऽस्मिन्राजमृधे हताः ॥११-२६-९॥
Ten ayutas, ten thousand, thousands, and twenty; sixty-six crores and six as well—these were slain in this royal battle.
अलक्ष्याणां तु वीराणां सहस्राणि चतुर्दश। दश चान्यानि राजेन्द्र शतं षष्टिश्च पञ्च च ॥११-२६-१०॥
O king, there were fourteen thousand invisible heroes, and also ten others, one hundred, sixty, and five.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
Dhṛtarāṣṭra said:
युधिष्ठिर गतिं कां ते गताः पुरुषसत्तमाः। आचक्ष्व मे महाबाहो सर्वज्ञो ह्यसि मे मतः ॥११-२६-११॥
Yudhishthira, tell me which path your noble ones have taken. O mighty-armed, you are considered all-knowing by me.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said:
यैर्हुतानि शरीराणि हृष्टैः परमसंयुगे। देवराजसमाँल्लोकान्गतास्ते सत्यविक्रमाः ॥११-२६-१२॥
Those truly valiant ones who joyfully offered their bodies in the supreme battle have attained worlds equal to that of the king of the gods.
ये त्वहृष्टेन मनसा मर्तव्यमिति भारत। युध्यमाना हताः सङ्ख्ये ते गन्धर्वैः समागताः ॥११-२६-१३॥
O Bhārata, those who fight with a joyless mind, thinking 'I must die', when killed in battle, they are joined by the Gandharvas.
ये तु सङ्ग्रामभूमिष्ठा याचमानाः पराङ्मुखाः। शस्त्रेण निधनं प्राप्ता गतास्ते गुह्यकान्प्रति ॥११-२६-१४॥
But those who, though standing on the battlefield, begged for mercy and turned away, having met death by weapon, have gone to the Guhyakas.
पीड्यमानाः परैर्ये तु हीयमाना निरायुधाः। ह्रीनिषेधा महात्मानः परानभिमुखा रणे ॥११-२६-१५॥
Those great-souled ones, though oppressed by others, reduced and weaponless, devoid of modesty, still faced the enemy in battle.
छिद्यमानाः शितैः शस्त्रैः क्षत्रधर्मपरायणाः। गतास्ते ब्रह्मसदनं हता वीराः सुवर्चसः ॥११-२६-१६॥
The heroes of great splendour, devoted to the warrior's duty, though cut down by sharp weapons, have attained the abode of Brahman.
ये तत्र निहता राजन्नन्तरायोधनं प्रति। यथा कथञ्चित्ते राजन्सम्प्राप्ता उत्तरान्कुरून् ॥११-२६-१७॥
O king, those who were slain there in the battle against the hostile army, somehow, O king, have reached the northern Kurus.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
Dhritarashtra said:
केन ज्ञानबलेनैवं पुत्र पश्यसि सिद्धवत्। तन्मे वद महाबाहो श्रोतव्यं यदि वै मया ॥११-२६-१८॥
O son, by what power of knowledge do you see thus, like a perfected being? O mighty-armed, tell me that, if indeed it is fit to be heard by me.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhishthira said:
निदेशाद्भवतः पूर्वं वने विचरता मया। तीर्थयात्राप्रसङ्गेन सम्प्राप्तोऽयमनुग्रहः ॥११-२६-१९॥
Before your command, while I was wandering in the forest, this favor has come to me by the occasion of pilgrimage.
देवर्षिर्लोमशो दृष्टस्ततः प्राप्तोऽस्म्यनुस्मृतिम्। दिव्यं चक्षुरपि प्राप्तं ज्ञानयोगेन वै पुरा ॥११-२६-२०॥
The divine sage Lomasha appeared; then I regained my memory. I also obtained divine sight through the union with knowledge, indeed, long ago.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥
Dhṛtarāṣṭra said:
येऽत्रानाथा जनस्यास्य सनाथा ये च भारत। कच्चित्तेषां शरीराणि धक्ष्यन्ति विधिपूर्वकम् ॥११-२६-२१॥
O Bhārata, whether the bodies of those here, both those without protector and those with protector among these people, will be consumed according to the prescribed rites.
न येषां सन्ति कर्तारो न च येऽत्राहिताग्नयः। वयं च कस्य कुर्यामो बहुत्वात्तात कर्मणः ॥११-२६-२२॥
Those among whom there are no doers, nor those here who have not kindled the sacred fire—O dear, for whom should we act, considering the multitude of actions?
यान्सुपर्णाश्च गृध्राश्च विकर्षन्ति ततस्ततः। तेषां तु कर्मणा लोका भविष्यन्ति युधिष्ठिर ॥११-२६-२३॥
O Yudhiṣṭhira, those whom the divine birds and vultures drag away here and there, for them, worlds will be determined by their actions.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
Vaiśampāyana said:
एवमुक्तो महाप्राज्ञः कुन्तीपुत्रो युधिष्ठिरः। आदिदेश सुधर्माणं धौम्यं सूतं च सञ्जयम् ॥११-२६-२४॥
Thus, when addressed in this way, the wise Yudhishthira, son of Kuntī, gave instructions to Sudharmāṇa, Dhaumya, the charioteer, and Sanjaya.
विदुरं च महाबुद्धिं युयुत्सुं चैव कौरवम्। इन्द्रसेनमुखांश्चैव भृत्यान्सूतांश्च सर्वशः ॥११-२६-२५॥
Vidura, the wise minister, the highly intelligent one, Yuyutsu, and the Kaurava, as well as Indrasena and others, all the servants and charioteers.
भवन्तः कारयन्त्वेषां प्रेतकार्याणि सर्वशः। यथा चानाथवत्किञ्चिच्छरीरं न विनश्यति ॥११-२६-२६॥
You all should have the funeral rites for these performed in every way, so that not even a single body, like that of one without a protector, is left to perish.
शासनाद्धर्मराजस्य क्षत्ता सूतश्च सञ्जयः। सुधर्मा धौम्यसहित इन्द्रसेनादयस्तथा ॥११-२६-२७॥
By the order of Dharmarāja, the charioteer, Sūta, Sañjaya, Sudharmā along with Dhaumya, and Indrasena and others likewise (acted accordingly).
चन्दनागुरुकाष्ठानि तथा कालीयकान्युत। घृतं तैलं च गन्धांश्च क्षौमाणि वसनानि च ॥११-२६-२८॥
Sandalwood, aloeswood, black aloe pieces, clarified butter, oil, fragrances, linen cloths, and garments.
समाहृत्य महार्हाणि दारूणां चैव सञ्चयान्। रथांश्च मृदितांस्तत्र नानाप्रहरणानि च ॥११-२६-२९॥
He gathered together very valuable heaps of wood, as well as the remains of crushed chariots and various weapons there.
चिताः कृत्वा प्रयत्नेन यथामुख्यान्नराधिपान्। दाहयामासुरव्यग्रा विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा ॥११-२६-३०॥
With effort, funeral pyres were prepared for the chief kings, and unperturbed, they began to burn them according to the prescribed rites.
दुर्योधनं च राजानं भ्रातॄंश्चास्य शताधिकान्। शल्यं शलं च राजानं भूरिश्रवसमेव च ॥११-२६-३१॥
Duryodhana, the king, his brothers numbering more than a hundred, Śalya, Śala, the king, and Bhūriśravas as well.
जयद्रथं च राजानमभिमन्युं च भारत। दौःशासनिं लक्ष्मणं च धृष्टकेतुं च पार्थिवम् ॥११-२६-३२॥
O Bhārata, Jayadratha, the king, Abhimanyu, the son of Duḥśāsana, Lakṣmaṇa, Dhṛṣṭaketu, and the king (were seen).
बृहन्तं सोमदत्तं च सृञ्जयांश्च शताधिकान्। राजानं क्षेमधन्वानं विराटद्रुपदौ तथा ॥११-२६-३३॥
Great Somadatta, the Sṛñjayas, and more than a hundred others, as well as King Kṣemadhanvan, Virāṭa, and Drupada also.
शिखण्डिनं च पाञ्चाल्यं धृष्टद्युम्नं च पार्षतम्। युधामन्युं च विक्रान्तमुत्तमौजसमेव च ॥११-२६-३४॥
Śikhaṇḍin, the son of Drupada, Dhṛṣṭadyumna, the son of Pṛṣata, Yudhāmanyu, and the valiant Uttamaujas were also present.
कौसल्यं द्रौपदेयांश्च शकुनिं चापि सौबलम्। अचलं वृषकं चैव भगदत्तं च पार्थिवम् ॥११-२६-३५॥
Kausalya, the sons of Draupadī, Śakuni the son of Subala, Acala, Vṛṣaka, Bhagadatta, and the king.
कर्णं वैकर्तनं चैव सहपुत्रममर्षणम्। केकयांश्च महेष्वासांस्त्रिगर्तांश्च महारथान् ॥११-२६-३६॥
Karna, the son of Vikartana, along with his son Amarṣaṇa, the Kekayas, the great bowmen, the Trigartas, and the great chariot-warriors.
घटोत्कचं राक्षसेन्द्रं बकभ्रातरमेव च। अलम्बुसं च राजानं जलसन्धं च पार्थिवम् ॥११-२६-३७॥
Ghaṭotkaca, the king of the rākṣasas, the brother of Baka, Alambusa, the king, Jalasandha, and the prince.
अन्यांश्च पार्थिवान्राजञ्शतशोऽथ सहस्रशः। घृतधाराहुतैर्दीप्तैः पावकैः समदाहयन् ॥११-२६-३८॥
O king, others also, by the hundreds and thousands, were completely burned by blazing fires with offerings of streams of ghee.
पितृमेधाश्च केषाञ्चिदवर्तन्त महात्मनाम्। सामभिश्चाप्यगायन्त तेऽन्वशोच्यन्त चापरैः ॥११-२६-३९॥
The ancestor-rites of some of the great-souled were performed; others sang Sāman hymns, and yet others lamented them.
साम्नामृचां च नादेन स्त्रीणां च रुदितस्वनैः। कश्मलं सर्वभूतानां निशायां समपद्यत ॥११-२६-४०॥
During the night, the sound of Sāman hymns and Ṛc verses, along with the wailing of women, brought about dejection among all beings.
ते विधूमाः प्रदीप्ताश्च दीप्यमानाश्च पावकाः। नभसीवान्वदृश्यन्त ग्रहास्तन्वभ्रसंवृताः ॥११-२६-४१॥
Smokeless, blazing, and shining fires appeared in the sky, resembling planets veiled by thin clouds.
ये चाप्यनाथास्तत्रासन्नानादेशसमागताः। तांश्च सर्वान्समानाय्य राशीन्कृत्वा सहस्रशः ॥११-२६-४२॥
And also those who were without protector and those who had assembled there by command, having brought all of them together, formed them into groups by thousands.
चित्वा दारुभिरव्यग्रः प्रभूतैः स्नेहतापितैः। दाहयामास विदुरो धर्मराजस्य शासनात् ॥११-२६-४३॥
Vidura, calmly gathering abundant woods soaked with oil and heated, set the body aflame as commanded by Dharmarāja.
कारयित्वा क्रियास्तेषां कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः। धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य गङ्गामभिमुखोऽगमत् ॥११-२६-४४॥
After having the rites performed for them, King Yudhishthira of the Kurus, with Dhritarashtra at the front, proceeded toward the Ganga.
