उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ गान्धारि मा च शोके मनः कृथाः। तवैव ह्यपराधेन कुरवो निधनं गताः ॥११-२६-१॥
uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha gāndhāri mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ। tavaiva hyaparādhena kuravo nidhanaṃ gatāḥ ॥11-26-1॥

(Arise, arise, O Gandhari, do not make your mind (remain) in grief; for indeed, by your offence, the Kurus have gone to destruction.)
Arise, arise, O Gandhari! Do not let your mind dwell in grief; for it is by your own offence that the Kurus have met their destruction.
या त्वं पुत्रं दुरात्मानमीर्षुमत्यन्तमानिनम्। दुर्योधनं पुरस्कृत्य दुष्कृतं साधु मन्यसे ॥११-२६-२॥
yā tvaṃ putraṃ durātmānam īrṣumaty antamāninam। duryodhanaṃ puraskṛtya duṣkṛtaṃ sādhu manyase ॥11-26-2॥

(Who, you, your son, wicked-souled, envious, arrogant, Duryodhana, having set forth, evil-doer, as good, you consider.)
You consider your son Duryodhana, who is wicked-souled, envious, and arrogant, having set forth an evil-doer, as good.
निष्ठुरं वैरपरुषं वृद्धानां शासनातिगम्। कथमात्मकृतं दोषं मय्याधातुमिहेच्छसि ॥११-२६-३॥
niṣṭhuraṃ vairaparuṣaṃ vṛddhānāṃ śāsanātigam। katham ātmakṛtaṃ doṣaṃ mayy ādhātum ihecchasi ॥11-26-3॥

(Cruel, hostile-harsh, transgressing the command of elders—how do you wish to place here upon me a fault that is self-caused?)
How do you wish to attribute to me here a fault that is cruel, harsh, and a transgression of the elders' command, when it is self-caused?
मृतं वा यदि वा नष्टं योऽतीतमनुशोचति। दुःखेन लभते दुःखं द्वावनर्थौ प्रपद्यते ॥११-२६-४॥
mṛtaṃ vā yadi vā naṣṭaṃ yo'tītam anuśocati। duḥkhena labhate duḥkhaṃ dvāvanarthau prapadyate ॥11-26-4॥
[मृतम् (mṛtam) - dead; वा (vā) - or; यदि (yadi) - if; वा (vā) - or; नष्टम् (naṣṭam) - lost; यः (yaḥ) - who; अतीतम् (atītam) - past; अनुशोचति (anuśocati) - grieves; दुःखेन (duḥkhena) - with sorrow; लभते (labhate) - obtains; दुःखम् (duḥkham) - sorrow; द्वौ (dvau) - two; अनर्थौ (anarthau) - misfortunes; प्रपद्यते (prapadyate) - attains;]
(Who grieves for what is dead or lost, or for the past, obtains sorrow with sorrow, attains two misfortunes.)
Whoever grieves for what is dead, lost, or past, only gains more sorrow and falls into twofold misfortune.
तपोर्थीयं ब्राह्मणी धत्त गर्भं; गौर्वोढारं धावितारं तुरङ्गी। शूद्रा दासं पशुपालं तु वैश्या; वधार्थीयं त्वद्विधा राजपुत्री ॥११-२६-५॥
taporthīyaṃ brāhmaṇī dhatta garbhaṃ; gaurvoḍhāraṃ dhāvitāraṃ turaṅgī. śūdrā dāsaṃ paśupālaṃ tu vaiśyā; vadhārthīyaṃ tvadvidhā rājaputrī ॥11-26-5॥

(The brāhmaṇa woman bears a womb for the sake of austerity; the cow (bears) a draught animal, the mare (bears) a runner. The śūdra woman (bears) a servant, the vaiśya woman (bears) a herdsman; but a princess like you (bears) for the purpose of killing.)
A brāhmaṇa woman gives birth for the sake of austerity, a cow gives birth to a draught animal, a mare gives birth to a runner. A śūdra woman gives birth to a servant, a vaiśya woman to a herdsman; but a princess like you is born for the purpose of destruction.

तच्छ्रुत्वा वासुदेवस्य पुनरुक्तं वचोऽप्रियम्। तूष्णीं बभूव गान्धारी शोकव्याकुललोचना ॥११-२६-६॥
tacchrutvā vāsudevasya punaruktaṃ vaco'priyam। tūṣṇīṃ babhūva gāndhārī śokavyākulalocanā ॥11-26-6॥

(Having heard that repeated unpleasant speech of Vāsudeva, Gāndhārī, her eyes agitated by grief, became silent.)
When Gāndhārī heard that repeated unpleasant speech of Vāsudeva, her eyes filled with grief, she became silent.
धृतराष्ट्रस्तु राजर्षिर्निगृह्याबुद्धिजं तमः। पर्यपृच्छत धर्मात्मा धर्मराजं युधिष्ठिरम् ॥११-२६-७॥
dhṛtarāṣṭras tu rājarṣir nigṛhyābuddhijaṃ tamaḥ। paryapṛcchata dharmātmā dharmarājaṃ yudhiṣṭhiram ॥11-26-7॥
[धृतराष्ट्रः (dhṛtarāṣṭraḥ) - Dhritarashtra; (name of the king) तु (tu) - but; राजर्षिः (rājarṣiḥ) - royal sage; निगृह्य (nigṛhya) - having restrained; अबुद्धिजं (abuddhijam) - arising from lack of wisdom; तमः (tamaḥ) - darkness; पर्यपृच्छत् (paryapṛcchat) - asked thoroughly; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; धर्मराजम् (dharmarājam) - Dharmaraja (Yudhishthira); युधिष्ठिरम् (yudhiṣṭhiram) - Yudhishthira;]
(Dhritarashtra, but the royal sage, having restrained the darkness arising from lack of wisdom, the righteous-souled (one) thoroughly asked Dharmaraja Yudhishthira.)
But King Dhritarashtra, the royal sage, having controlled the darkness born of ignorance, righteously questioned Dharmaraja Yudhishthira.
जीवतां परिमाणज्ञः सैन्यानामसि पाण्डव। हतानां यदि जानीषे परिमाणं वदस्व मे ॥११-२६-८॥
jīvatāṃ parimāṇajñaḥ sainyānāmasi pāṇḍava। hatānāṃ yadi jānīṣe parimāṇaṃ vadasva me ॥11-26-8॥
[जीवतां (jīvatām) - of the living; परिमाणज्ञः (parimāṇajñaḥ) - knower of the number; सैन्यानाम् (sainyānām) - of the armies; असि (asi) - you are; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; हतानाम् (hatānām) - of the slain; यदि (yadi) - if; जानीषे (jānīṣe) - you know; परिमाणम् (parimāṇam) - the number; वदस्व (vadasva) - tell; मे (me) - to me;]
(O Pāṇḍava, you are the knower of the number of the living armies. If you know the number of the slain, tell it to me.)
O Pāṇḍava, you know the number of the living soldiers in the armies. If you know the number of those who have been slain, please tell me.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

दशायुतानामयुतं सहस्राणि च विंशतिः। कोट्यः षष्टिश्च षट्चैव येऽस्मिन्राजमृधे हताः ॥११-२६-९॥
daśāyutānām ayutaṃ sahasrāṇi ca viṃśatiḥ। koṭyaḥ ṣaṣṭiś ca ṣaṭ caiva ye 'smin rājamṛdhe hatāḥ ॥11-26-9॥
[दशायुतानाम् (daśāyutānām) - of ten ayutas (hundred-thousands); अयुतम् (ayutam) - ten thousand; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; च (ca) - and; विंशतिः (viṃśatiḥ) - twenty; कोट्यः (koṭyaḥ) - crores (ten millions); षष्टिः (ṣaṣṭiḥ) - sixty; च (ca) - and; षट् (ṣaṭ) - six; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; ये (ye) - who; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; राजमृधे (rājamṛdhe) - royal battle; हताः (hatāḥ) - were slain;]
(Of ten ayutas, ten thousand, and thousands, and twenty; crores, sixty and six indeed, who in this royal battle were slain.)
Ten ayutas, ten thousand, thousands, and twenty; sixty-six crores and six as well—these were slain in this royal battle.
अलक्ष्याणां तु वीराणां सहस्राणि चतुर्दश। दश चान्यानि राजेन्द्र शतं षष्टिश्च पञ्च च ॥११-२६-१०॥
alakṣyāṇāṃ tu vīrāṇāṃ sahasrāṇi caturdaśa। daśa cānyāni rājendra śataṃ ṣaṣṭiśca pañca ca ॥11-26-10॥
[अलक्ष्याणां (alakṣyāṇām) - of the invisible; तु (tu) - but; वीराणां (vīrāṇām) - of heroes; सहस्राणि (sahasrāṇi) - thousands; चतुर्दश (caturdaśa) - fourteen; दश (daśa) - ten; च (ca) - and; अन्यानि (anyāni) - others; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; शतम् (śatam) - hundred; षष्टिः (ṣaṣṭiḥ) - sixty; च (ca) - and; पञ्च (pañca) - five; च (ca) - and;]
(Of the invisible but of heroes fourteen thousands, ten and others, O king, hundred, sixty and five and.)
O king, there were fourteen thousand invisible heroes, and also ten others, one hundred, sixty, and five.
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच॥

युधिष्ठिर गतिं कां ते गताः पुरुषसत्तमाः। आचक्ष्व मे महाबाहो सर्वज्ञो ह्यसि मे मतः ॥११-२६-११॥
yudhiṣṭhira gatiṃ kāṃ te gatāḥ puruṣasattamāḥ। ācakṣva me mahābāho sarvajño hyasi me mataḥ ॥11-26-11॥

(Yudhishthira, which path have your best among men gone? Tell me, O mighty-armed, all-knowing, indeed you are regarded by me.)
Yudhishthira, tell me which path your noble ones have taken. O mighty-armed, you are considered all-knowing by me.

यैर्हुतानि शरीराणि हृष्टैः परमसंयुगे। देवराजसमाँल्लोकान्गतास्ते सत्यविक्रमाः ॥११-२६-१२॥
yair hutāni śarīrāṇi hṛṣṭaiḥ paramasaṃyuge। devarājasamāṃl lokān gatās te satyavikramāḥ ॥11-26-12॥
[यैः (yaiḥ) - by whom; हुतानि (hutāni) - offered (as sacrifice); शरीराणि (śarīrāṇi) - bodies; हृष्टैः (hṛṣṭaiḥ) - with joy; परमसंयुगे (paramasaṃyuge) - in the supreme battle; देवराजसमान् (devarājasamān) - equal to the king of gods; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; गताः (gatāḥ) - have attained; ते (te) - they; सत्यविक्रमाः (satyavikramāḥ) - truly valiant;]
(By whom the bodies were offered with joy in the supreme battle, they, truly valiant, have attained worlds equal to the king of gods.)
Those truly valiant ones who joyfully offered their bodies in the supreme battle have attained worlds equal to that of the king of the gods.
ये त्वहृष्टेन मनसा मर्तव्यमिति भारत। युध्यमाना हताः सङ्ख्ये ते गन्धर्वैः समागताः ॥११-२६-१३॥
ye tv ahṛṣṭena manasā martavyam iti bhārata। yudhyamānā hatāḥ saṅkhye te gandharvaiḥ samāgatāḥ ॥11-26-13॥
[ये (ye) - who; तु (tu) - but; अहृष्टेन (ahṛṣṭena) - with joyless; मनसा (manasā) - mind; मर्तव्यम् (martavyam) - must die; इति (iti) - thus; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; युध्यमानाः (yudhyamānāḥ) - fighting; हताः (hatāḥ) - killed; सङ्ख्ये (saṅkhye) - in battle; ते (te) - they; गन्धर्वैः (gandharvaiḥ) - by Gandharvas; समागताः (samāgatāḥ) - joined;]
(Who, but with joyless mind, thinking 'must die', O Bhārata, fighting, killed in battle, they are joined by Gandharvas.)
O Bhārata, those who fight with a joyless mind, thinking 'I must die', when killed in battle, they are joined by the Gandharvas.
ये तु सङ्ग्रामभूमिष्ठा याचमानाः पराङ्मुखाः। शस्त्रेण निधनं प्राप्ता गतास्ते गुह्यकान्प्रति ॥११-२६-१४॥
ye tu saṅgrāmabhūmiṣṭhā yācamānāḥ parāṅmukhāḥ। śastreṇa nidhanaṃ prāptā gatās te guhyakān prati ॥11-26-14॥
[ये (ye) - those; तु (tu) - but; सङ्ग्रामभूमिष्ठाः (saṅgrāmabhūmiṣṭhāḥ) - standing on the battlefield; याचमानाः (yācamānāḥ) - begging; पराङ्मुखाः (parāṅmukhāḥ) - turned away; शस्त्रेण (śastreṇa) - by weapon; निधनम् (nidhanaṃ) - death; प्राप्ताः (prāptāḥ) - attained; गताः (gatāḥ) - gone; ते (te) - they; गुह्यकान् (guhyakān) - to the Guhyakas (celestial beings); प्रति (prati) - towards;]
(Those but standing on the battlefield, begging, turned away, by weapon death attained, gone they towards the Guhyakas.)
But those who, though standing on the battlefield, begged for mercy and turned away, having met death by weapon, have gone to the Guhyakas.
पीड्यमानाः परैर्ये तु हीयमाना निरायुधाः। ह्रीनिषेधा महात्मानः परानभिमुखा रणे ॥११-२६-१५॥
pīḍyamānāḥ parair ye tu hīyamānā nirāyudhāḥ। hrī-niṣedhā mahātmānaḥ parān abhimukhā raṇe॥11-26-15॥
[पीड्यमानाः (pīḍyamānāḥ) - being oppressed; परैः (paraiḥ) - by others; ये (ye) - those who; तु (tu) - but; हीयमाना (hīyamānā) - being reduced; निरायुधाः (nirāyudhāḥ) - without weapons; ह्री (hrī) - modesty; निषेधाः (niṣedhāḥ) - devoid of; महात्मानः (mahātmānaḥ) - great-souled; परान् (parān) - towards others; अभिमुखाः (abhimukhāḥ) - facing; रणे (raṇe) - in battle;]
(Those who, being oppressed by others, but being reduced and weaponless, devoid of modesty, the great-souled, facing others in battle.)
Those great-souled ones, though oppressed by others, reduced and weaponless, devoid of modesty, still faced the enemy in battle.
छिद्यमानाः शितैः शस्त्रैः क्षत्रधर्मपरायणाः। गतास्ते ब्रह्मसदनं हता वीराः सुवर्चसः ॥११-२६-१६॥
chidyamānāḥ śitaiḥ śastraiḥ kṣatradharmaparāyaṇāḥ। gatās te brahmasadanaṃ hatā vīrāḥ suvarcasaḥ ॥11-26-16॥
[छिद्यमानाः (chidyamānāḥ) - being cut; शितैः (śitaiḥ) - by sharp; शस्त्रैः (śastraiḥ) - by weapons; क्षत्रधर्मपरायणाः (kṣatradharmaparāyaṇāḥ) - devoted to the duty of warriors; गताः (gatāḥ) - have gone; ते (te) - they; ब्रह्मसदनं (brahmasadanam) - to the abode of Brahman; हता (hatā) - slain; वीराः (vīrāḥ) - heroes; सुवर्चसः (suvarcasaḥ) - of great splendour;]
(Being cut by sharp weapons, devoted to the duty of warriors, they, the slain heroes of great splendour, have gone to the abode of Brahman.)
The heroes of great splendour, devoted to the warrior's duty, though cut down by sharp weapons, have attained the abode of Brahman.
ये तत्र निहता राजन्नन्तरायोधनं प्रति। यथा कथञ्चित्ते राजन्सम्प्राप्ता उत्तरान्कुरून् ॥११-२६-१७॥
ye tatra nihatā rājan-antarāyodhanaṃ prati। yathā kathaṃcit te rājan-samprāptā uttarān kurūn ॥11-26-17॥

Dhritarashtra said:
केन ज्ञानबलेनैवं पुत्र पश्यसि सिद्धवत्। तन्मे वद महाबाहो श्रोतव्यं यदि वै मया ॥११-२६-१८॥
kena jñānabalenaivaṃ putra paśyasi siddhavat। tanme vada mahābāho śrotavyaṃ yadi vai mayā ॥11-26-18॥

निदेशाद्भवतः पूर्वं वने विचरता मया। तीर्थयात्राप्रसङ्गेन सम्प्राप्तोऽयमनुग्रहः ॥११-२६-१९॥
nideśādbhavataḥ pūrvaṃ vane vicaratā mayā। tīrthayātrāprasaṅgena samprāpto'yamanugrahaḥ ॥11-26-19॥

Vidura, calmly gathering abundant woods soaked with oil and heated, set the body aflame as commanded by Dharmarāja.
कारयित्वा क्रियास्तेषां कुरुराजो युधिष्ठिरः। धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य गङ्गामभिमुखोऽगमत् ॥११-२६-४४॥
kārayitvā kriyās teṣāṃ kururājo yudhiṣṭhiraḥ। dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ puraskṛtya gaṅgām abhimukho'gamāt ॥11-26-44॥
