atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। śaṅkhaś ca likhitaś cāstāṃ bhrātarau saṃyatavratau ॥12-24-2॥

ततः कदाचिल्लिखितः शङ्खस्याश्रममागमत्। यदृच्छयापि शङ्खोऽथ निष्क्रान्तोऽभवदाश्रमात् ॥१२-२४-४॥
tataḥ kadācillikhitaḥ śaṅkhasyāśramamāgamat। yadṛcchayāpi śaṅkho'tha niṣkrānto'bhavadāśramāt ॥12-24-4॥

सोऽभिगम्याश्रमं भ्रातुः शङ्खस्य लिखितस्तदा। फलानि शातयामास सम्यक्परिणतान्युत ॥१२-२४-५॥
so'bhigamyāśramaṃ bhrātuḥ śaṅkhasya likhitastadā। phalāni śātayāmāsa samyakpariṇatānyuta ॥12-24-5॥

Then Likhita, having come to the hermitage of his brother Śaṅkha, broke off the properly ripened fruits.
तान्युपादाय विस्रब्धो भक्षयामास स द्विजः। तस्मिंश्च भक्षयत्येव शङ्खोऽप्याश्रममागमत् ॥१२-२४-६॥
tāny upādāya visrabdho bhakṣayāmāsa sa dvijaḥ। tasmiṁś ca bhakṣayaty eva śaṅkho 'py āśramam āgamat ॥12-24-6॥

(Having taken those (objects), the twice-born (Brahmin) confidently ate. And while he was indeed eating, Śaṅkha also arrived at the hermitage.)
The Brahmin took those things and ate them confidently. While he was still eating, Śaṅkha also arrived at the hermitage.
भक्षयन्तं तु तं दृष्ट्वा शङ्खो भ्रातरमब्रवीत्। कुतः फलान्यवाप्तानि हेतुना केन खादसि ॥१२-२४-७॥

सोऽब्रवीद्भ्रातरं ज्येष्ठमुपस्पृश्याभिवाद्य च। इत एव गृहीतानि मयेति प्रहसन्निव ॥१२-२४-८॥
so'bravīdbhrātaraṃ jyeṣṭhamupaspṛśyābhivādya ca| ita eva gṛhītāni mayeti prahasanniva ॥12-24-8॥

He respectfully touched and saluted his elder brother and said, smiling, 'I have indeed taken these from here.'
तमब्रवीत्तदा शङ्खस्तीव्रकोपसमन्वितः। स्तेयं त्वया कृतमिदं फलान्याददता स्वयम् ॥ गच्छ राजानमासाद्य स्वकर्म प्रथयस्व वै ॥१२-२४-९॥
tam abravīt tadā śaṅkhaḥ tīvra-kopa-samanvitaḥ। steyaṃ tvayā kṛtam idaṃ phalāni ādadatā svayam ॥ gaccha rājānam āsādya svakarma prathayasva vai ॥12-24-9॥

(Then Śaṅkha, endowed with intense anger, said to him: "This theft has been done by you, taking these fruits yourself. Go, approach the king, and indeed proclaim your deed.")
Śaṅkha, filled with intense anger, said to him: "You have committed this theft by taking these fruits yourself. Go to the king and openly declare your action."
अदत्तादानमेवेदं कृतं पार्थिवसत्तम। स्तेनं मां त्वं विदित्वा च स्वधर्ममनुपालय ॥ शीघ्रं धारय चौरस्य मम दण्डं नराधिप ॥१२-२४-१०॥
adattādānamevedaṃ kṛtaṃ pārthivasattama। stenaṃ māṃ tvaṃ viditvā ca svadharmam-anupālaya ॥ śīghraṃ dhāraya caurasya mama daṇḍaṃ narādhipa ॥12-24-10॥

इत्युक्तस्तस्य वचनात्सुद्युम्नं वसुधाधिपम्। अभ्यगच्छन्महाबाहो लिखितः संशितव्रतः ॥१२-२४-११॥
ity-uktaḥ tasya vacanāt sudyumnaṃ vasudhādhipam | abhyagacchan mahābāho likhitaḥ saṃśitavrataḥ ||12-24-11||

(Thus having been told by his words, Likhita, firm in his vows, O mighty-armed, approached Sudyumna, the lord of the earth.)

सुद्युम्नस्त्वन्तपालेभ्यः श्रुत्वा लिखितमागतम्। अभ्यगच्छत्सहामात्यः पद्भ्यामेव नरेश्वरः ॥१२-२४-१२॥
sudyumnas tv antapālebhyaḥ śrutvā likhitam āgatam। abhyagacchat sahāmātyaḥ padbhyām eva nareśvaraḥ ॥12-24-12॥

तमब्रवीत्समागत्य स राजा ब्रह्मवित्तमम्। किमागमनमाचक्ष्व भगवन्कृतमेव तत् ॥१२-२४-१३॥
tam abravīt samāgatya sa rājā brahmavittamam। kim āgamanam ācakṣva bhagavan kṛtam eva tat ॥12-24-13॥

(Him said having approached, he, the king, the foremost knower of Brahman: "What arrival, tell, O venerable one, done indeed that.")
Having approached him, the king, foremost knower of Brahman, said: "O venerable one, tell what is the reason for your arrival; that indeed has been done."
एवमुक्तः स विप्रर्षिः सुद्युम्नमिदमब्रवीत्। प्रतिश्रौषि करिष्येति श्रुत्वा तत्कर्तुमर्हसि ॥१२-२४-१४॥

(Thus addressed, the sage among Brāhmaṇas said this to Sudyumna: "You have promised, 'I shall do.' Having heard thus, you ought to do that.")
Thus spoken to, the sage among Brāhmaṇas said this to Sudyumna: "You have promised, 'I shall do.' Therefore, having heard this, you should do that."
अनिसृष्टानि गुरुणा फलानि पुरुषर्षभ। भक्षितानि मया राजंस्तत्र मां शाधि माचिरम् ॥१२-२४-१५॥
anisṛṣṭāni guruṇā phalāni puruṣarṣabha। bhakṣitāni mayā rājan tatra māṃ śādhi mā-ciram ॥12-24-15॥

प्रमाणं चेन्मतो राजा भवतो दण्डधारणे। अनुज्ञायामपि तथा हेतुः स्याद्ब्राह्मणर्षभ ॥१२-२४-१६॥
pramāṇaṃ cenmato rājā bhavato daṇḍadhāraṇe। anujñāyāmapi tathā hetuḥ syādbrāhmaṇarṣabha ॥12-24-16॥
[प्रमाणम् (pramāṇam) - evidence; चेत् (cet) - if; मतः (mataḥ) - regarded; राजा (rājā) - king; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - by you; दण्डधारणे (daṇḍadhāraṇe) - in the wielding of punishment; अनुज्ञायाम् (anujñāyām) - in permission; अपि (api) - even; तथा (tathā) - so; हेतुः (hetuḥ) - reason; स्यात् (syāt) - may be; ब्राह्मणर्षभ (brāhmaṇarṣabha) - O best of Brāhmaṇas;]
(If evidence is regarded by you, O king, in the wielding of punishment, even in permission so the reason may be, O best of Brāhmaṇas.)
O best of Brāhmaṇas, if you, O king, consider evidence in the wielding of punishment, then even in granting permission, there may be a reason.
स भवानभ्यनुज्ञातः शुचिकर्मा महाव्रतः। ब्रूहि कामानतोऽन्यांस्त्वं करिष्यामि हि ते वचः ॥१२-२४-१७॥
sa bhavān abhyanujñātaḥ śucikarmā mahāvrataḥ। brūhi kāmān ato'nyāṃs tvaṃ kariṣyāmi hi te vacaḥ॥12-24-17॥

(He, you, having been permitted, pure in deeds, great vow-holder, speak desires from here, others, you, I shall do, indeed, your word.)
O noble one, you who are pure in deeds and steadfast in great vows, having been permitted, speak of any other desires you have; I shall indeed fulfill your word.

छन्द्यमानोऽपि ब्रह्मर्षिः पार्थिवेन महात्मना। नान्यं वै वरयामास तस्माद्दण्डादृते वरम् ॥१२-२४-१८॥
chandyamāno'pi brahmarṣiḥ pārthivena mahātmanā। nānyaṃ vai varayāmāsa tasmāddaṇḍādṛte varam ॥12-24-18॥
[छन्द्यमानः (chandyamānaḥ) - being requested; अपि (api) - even; ब्रह्मर्षिः (brahmarṣiḥ) - the Brahmarṣi; पार्थिवेन (pārthivena) - by the king; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled; न (na) - not; अन्यं (anyaṃ) - other; वै (vai) - indeed; वरयामास (varayāmāsa) - chose; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - than that; दण्डात् (daṇḍāt) - from Daṇḍa; ऋते (ṛte) - except; वरम् (varam) - boon;]
(Even though being requested, the Brahmarṣi by the great-souled king did not choose any boon other than Daṇḍa.)
Even when entreated by the noble king, the Brahmarṣi chose no boon other than Daṇḍa.
ततः स पृथिवीपालो लिखितस्य महात्मनः। करौ प्रच्छेदयामास धृतदण्डो जगाम सः ॥१२-२४-१९॥
tataḥ sa pṛthivīpālo likhitasya mahātmanaḥ। karau pracchedayāmāsa dhṛtadaṇḍo jagāma saḥ ॥12-24-19॥

Then the king, upholding justice, ordered the hands of the noble Likhita to be cut off and departed.
स गत्वा भ्रातरं शङ्खमार्तरूपोऽब्रवीदिदम्। धृतदण्डस्य दुर्भुद्धेर्भगवन्क्षन्तुमर्हसि ॥१२-२४-२०॥
sa gatvā bhrātaraṃ śaṅkham ārtarūpo 'bravīd idam। dhṛtadaṇḍasya durbuddher bhagavan kṣantum arhasi ॥12-24-20॥

(He, having gone to his brother Śaṅkha in a distressed form, said this: 'O venerable one, you ought to forgive Dhṛtadaṇḍa, the evil-minded.' 12-24-20.)
He went to his brother Śaṅkha, appearing distressed, and said: 'O venerable one, you should forgive Dhṛtadaṇḍa, who is evil-minded.' 12-24-20.

न कुप्ये तव धर्मज्ञ न च दूषयसे मम। धर्मस्तु ते व्यतिक्रान्तस्ततस्ते निष्कृतिः कृता ॥१२-२४-२१॥
na kupye tava dharmajña na ca dūṣayase mama। dharmastu te vyatikrāntastataste niṣkṛtiḥ kṛtā ॥12-24-21॥
[न (na) - not; कुप्ये (kupye) - I am angry; तव (tava) - your; धर्मज्ञ (dharmajña) - knower of dharma; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; दूषयसे (dūṣayase) - you defile; मम (mama) - me; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; तु (tu) - but; ते (te) - your; व्यतिक्रान्तः (vyatikrāntaḥ) - transgressed; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; ते (te) - your; निष्कृतिः (niṣkṛtiḥ) - atonement; कृता (kṛtā) - has been done;]
(Not I am angry, O knower of dharma, nor do you defile me. But your dharma has been transgressed; therefore, your atonement has been done.)
I am not angry with you, O knower of dharma, nor have you wronged me. But your dharma has been transgressed; therefore, your atonement has been performed.
स गत्वा बाहुदां शीघ्रं तर्पयस्व यथाविधि। देवान्पितॄनृषींश्चैव मा चाधर्मे मनः कृथाः ॥१२-२४-२२॥
sa gatvā bāhudāṃ śīghraṃ tarpayasva yathāvidhi। devān pitṝn ṛṣīṃś caiva mā cādharmē manaḥ kṛthāḥ ॥12-24-22॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; बाहुदां (bāhudām) - Bāhudā (name of a river); शीघ्रं (śīghram) - quickly; तर्पयस्व (tarpayasva) - satisfy (with offerings); यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to the rule; देवान् (devān) - the gods; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - the ancestors; ऋषीन् (ṛṣīn) - the sages; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; मा (mā) - do not; च (ca) - and; अधर्मे (adharme) - in unrighteousness; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - make;]
(He, having gone to the Bāhudā quickly, satisfy (with offerings) according to the rule the gods, the ancestors, and the sages indeed; and do not make your mind (engage) in unrighteousness.)
Go quickly to the Bāhudā river and, as prescribed, offer oblations to the gods, ancestors, and sages; and do not let your mind dwell on unrighteousness.
व्यास उवाच॥
vyāsa uvāca॥

तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा शङ्खस्य लिखितस्तदा। अवगाह्यापगां पुण्यामुदकार्थं प्रचक्रमे ॥१२-२४-२३॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā śaṅkhasya likhitas tadā। avagāhyāpagāṃ puṇyām udakārthaṃ pracakrame ॥12-24-23॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; तत् (tat) - that; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; शङ्खस्य (śaṅkhasya) - of Śaṅkha; लिखितः (likhitaḥ) - Likhita; तदा (tadā) - then; अवगाह्य (avagāhya) - having entered; आपगाम् (āpagām) - river; पुण्याम् (puṇyām) - holy; उदकार्थम् (udakārtham) - for water; प्रचक्रमे (pracakrame) - he began;]
(Having heard those words of him, Likhita, then, having entered the holy river for water, began.)
After hearing those words from him, Likhita then entered the holy river to fetch water.
प्रादुरास्तां ततस्तस्य करौ जलजसंनिभौ। ततः स विस्मितो भ्रातुर्दर्शयामास तौ करौ ॥१२-२४-२४॥
prādurāstāṃ tatas tasya karau jalajasaṃnibhau। tataḥ sa vismito bhrātur darśayāmāsa tau karau ॥12-24-24॥
[प्रादुरास्तां (prādurāstāṃ) - became manifest; appeared; ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; तस्य (tasya) - his; करौ (karau) - hands; (dual); जलजसंनिभौ (jalajasaṃnibhau) - like lotuses; resembling lotuses; (dual); ततः (tataḥ) - then; thereafter; स (sa) - he; विस्मितः (vismitaḥ) - astonished; amazed; भ्रातुः (bhrātuḥ) - of (his) brother; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; caused to be seen; तौ (tau) - those two; (dual, referring to hands); करौ (karau) - hands; (dual);]
(Became manifest then his hands like lotuses; then he, astonished, to his brother showed those two hands.)
Then his hands, resembling lotuses, appeared; then, astonished, he showed those two hands to his brother.
ततस्तमब्रवीच्छङ्खस्तपसेदं कृतं मया। मा च तेऽत्र विशङ्का भूद्दैवमेव विधीयते ॥१२-२४-२५॥
tatas tam abravīc chaṅkhas tapasedaṃ kṛtaṃ mayā। mā ca te'tra viśaṅkā bhūd daivam eva vidhīyate ॥12-24-25॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तम् (tam) - him; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; शङ्खः (śaṅkhaḥ) - Śaṅkha; तपसे (tapase) - for austerity; इदं (idaṃ) - this; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; मया (mayā) - by me; मा (mā) - do not; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - to you; अत्र (atra) - here; विशङ्का (viśaṅkā) - doubt; भूत् (bhūt) - let be; दैवम् (daivam) - fate; एव (eva) - indeed; विधीयते (vidhīyate) - is ordained;]
(Then Śaṅkha said to him: "This was done by me for austerity. Do not have any doubt here; indeed, only fate is ordained.")

kiṁ nu nāhaṁ tvayā pūtaḥ pūrvameva mahādyute। yasya te tapaso vīryam īdṛśaṁ dvijasattama ॥12-24-26॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; पूतः (pūtaḥ) - purified; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; एव (eva) - indeed; महाद्युते (mahādyute) - O greatly radiant one; यस्य (yasya) - whose; ते (te) - your; तपसः (tapasaḥ) - of austerity; वीर्यम् (vīryam) - power; ईदृशम् (īdṛśam) - such; द्विजसत्तम (dvijasattama) - O best of twice-born;]
(What indeed, was I not purified by you before, O greatly radiant one? Whose austerity has such power, O best of twice-born.)
O best of twice-born, O greatly radiant one, was I not already purified by you before, whose austerity possesses such power?
शङ्ख उवाच॥

एवमेतन्मया कार्यं नाहं दण्डधरस्तव। स च पूतो नरपतिस्त्वं चापि पितृभिः सह ॥१२-२४-२७॥
evam etan mayā kāryaṃ nāhaṃ daṇḍadharas tava| sa ca pūto narapatis tvaṃ cāpi pitṛbhiḥ saha ॥12-24-27॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; एतत् (etat) - this; मया (mayā) - by me; कार्यं (kāryam) - to be done; न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; दण्डधरः (daṇḍadharaḥ) - bearer of the staff (punisher); तव (tava) - your; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; पूतः (pūtaḥ) - purified; नरपतिः (narapatiḥ) - king; त्वम् (tvam) - you; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; पितृभिः (pitṛbhiḥ) - with ancestors; सह (saha) - together;]
(Thus, this is not to be done by me; I am not your punisher. He, the king, is purified, and you also together with your ancestors.)
Therefore, this is not my duty; I am not your punisher. The king is purified, and you too, along with your ancestors.

स राजा पाण्डवश्रेष्ठ श्रेष्ठो वै तेन कर्मणा। प्राप्तवान्परमां सिद्धिं दक्षः प्राचेतसो यथा ॥१२-२४-२८॥
sa rājā pāṇḍavaśreṣṭha śreṣṭho vai tena karmaṇā। prāptavān paramāṃ siddhiṃ dakṣaḥ prācetaso yathā ॥12-24-28॥
[स (sa) - he; राजा (rājā) - king; पाण्डवश्रेष्ठ (pāṇḍavaśreṣṭha) - best among the Pāṇḍavas; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - excellent; वै (vai) - indeed; तेन (tena) - by that; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; प्राप्तवान् (prāptavān) - attained; परमां (paramāṃ) - supreme; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - perfection; दक्षः (dakṣaḥ) - Dakṣa; प्राचेतसः (prācetasaḥ) - son of Pracetas; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(He, the king, best among the Pāṇḍavas, indeed by that action attained supreme perfection, as Dakṣa, the son of Pracetas.)
He, the king, foremost among the Pāṇḍavas, by that very action attained the highest perfection, just as Dakṣa, the son of Pracetas, did.
एष धर्मः क्षत्रियाणां प्रजानां परिपालनम्। उत्पथेऽस्मिन्महाराज मा च शोके मनः कृथाः ॥१२-२४-२९॥
eṣa dharmaḥ kṣatriyāṇāṃ prajānāṃ paripālanam। utpathe'smin mahārāja mā ca śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ ॥12-24-29॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; क्षत्रियाणाम् (kṣatriyāṇām) - of the kṣatriyas; प्रजानाम् (prajānām) - of the subjects; परिपालनम् (paripālanam) - protection; उत्पथे (utpathe) - in adversity; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; मा (mā) - do not; च (ca) - and; शोके (śoke) - in grief; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; कृथाः (kṛthāḥ) - make;]
(This is the duty of kṣatriyas: the protection of the subjects. In this adversity, O great king, do not make your mind (fall) into grief and sorrow.)
The duty of kṣatriyas is to protect their subjects. O great king, do not let your mind be overcome by grief in this adversity.
भ्रातुरस्य हितं वाक्यं शृणु धर्मज्ञसत्तम। दण्ड एव हि राजेन्द्र क्षत्रधर्मो न मुण्डनम् ॥१२-२४-३०॥
bhrāturasya hitaṃ vākyaṃ śṛṇu dharmajñasattama। daṇḍa eva hi rājendra kṣatradharmo na muṇḍanam ॥12-24-30॥

(Listen to the beneficial speech of his brother, O best knower of dharma. Indeed, O king, punishment is the duty of a kṣatriya, not shaving (of the head).)
