अभिमन्यौ हते बाले द्रौपद्यास्तनयेषु च। धृष्टद्युम्ने विराटे च द्रुपदे च महीपतौ ॥१२-२७-१॥
abhimanyau hate bāle draupadyāstanayeṣu ca। dhṛṣṭadyumne virāṭe ca drupade ca mahīpatau॥12-27-1॥

When the young Abhimanyu was slain, and also the sons of Draupadī, as well as Dhṛṣṭadyumna, Virāṭa, Drupada, and the king, [were killed].
वसुषेणे च धर्मज्ञे धृष्टकेतौ च पार्थिवे। तथान्येषु नरेन्द्रेषु नानादेश्येषु संयुगे ॥१२-२७-२॥
vasuṣeṇe ca dharmajñe dhṛṣṭaketau ca pārthive। tathānyeṣu narendreṣu nānādeśyeṣu saṃyuge ॥12-27-2॥

न विमुञ्चति मां शोको ज्ञातिघातिनमातुरम्। राज्यकामुकमत्युग्रं स्ववंशोच्छेदकारकम् ॥१२-२७-३॥
na vimuñcati māṃ śoko jñātighātinamāturam। rājyakāmukamatyugraṃ svavaṃśocchedakārakam ॥12-27-3॥

Sorrow, which is the destroyer of relatives, afflicts me, who desires the kingdom, is very fierce, and causes the destruction of my own lineage, does not leave me.
यस्याङ्के क्रीडमानेन मया वै परिवर्तितम्। स मया राज्यलुब्धेन गाङ्गेयो विनिपातितः ॥१२-२७-४॥
yasyāṅke krīḍamānena mayā vai parivartitam। sa mayā rājyalubdhena gāṅgeyo vinipātitaḥ ॥12-27-4॥

He, on whose lap I played and whom I turned over, that Gāṅgeya (Bhīṣma), by me, desirous of the kingdom, was caused to fall.
यदा ह्येनं विघूर्णन्तमपश्यं पार्थसायकैः। कम्पमानं यथा वज्रैः प्रेक्षमाणं शिखण्डिनम् ॥१२-२७-५॥
yadā hy enaṃ vighūrṇantam apaśyaṃ pārthasāyakaiḥ। kampamānaṃ yathā vajraiḥ prekṣamāṇaṃ śikhaṇḍinam ॥12-27-5॥

(When indeed him reeling I saw by Arjuna's arrows, trembling as by thunderbolts, beholding Śikhaṇḍin.)
When I saw him reeling from Arjuna's arrows, trembling as if struck by thunderbolts, and Śikhaṇḍin watching him.
जीर्णं सिंहमिव प्रांशुं नरसिंहं पितामहम्। कीर्यमाणं शरैस्तीक्ष्णैर्दृष्ट्वा मे व्यथितं मनः ॥१२-२७-६॥
jīrṇaṃ siṃham iva prāṃśuṃ narasiṃhaṃ pitāmaham। kīryamāṇaṃ śaraiḥ tīkṣṇaiḥ dṛṣṭvā me vyathitaṃ manaḥ ॥12-27-6॥

(Having seen my grandfather, Narasimha, tall like a worn-out lion, being struck with sharp arrows, my mind was disturbed.)
When I saw my grandfather Narasimha, tall and lion-like though aged, being assailed by sharp arrows, my mind was deeply troubled.
प्राङ्मुखं सीदमानं च रथादपच्युतं शरैः। घूर्णमानं यथा शैलं तदा मे कश्मलोऽभवत् ॥१२-२७-७॥
prāṅmukhaṃ sīdamānaṃ ca rathād apacyutaṃ śaraiḥ। ghūrṇamānaṃ yathā śailaṃ tadā me kaśmalo'bhavat ॥12-27-7॥

(Facing east, sinking and not fallen from the chariot, struck by arrows, reeling like a mountain, then faintness arose in me.)
As I faced east, sinking and yet not fallen from the chariot, struck by arrows and reeling like a mountain, then faintness overcame me.
यः स बाणधनुष्पाणिर्योधयामास भार्गवम्। बहून्यहानि कौरव्यः कुरुक्षेत्रे महामृधे ॥१२-२७-८॥

समेतं पार्थिवं क्षत्रं वाराणस्यां नदीसुतः। कन्यार्थमाह्वयद्वीरो रथेनैकेन संयुगे ॥१२-२७-९॥
sametaṃ pārthivaṃ kṣatraṃ vārāṇasyāṃ nadīsutaḥ। kanyārthamāhvayadvīro rathenaikena saṃyuge ॥12-27-9॥

(The son of the river (Bhīṣma), having assembled the kings and kṣatriyas in Varanasi, for the sake of the maiden, the hero challenged (them) with a single chariot in battle.)
Bhīṣma, the son of the river, gathered the kings and kṣatriyas in Varanasi and, for the maiden's sake, valiantly challenged them all to battle alone with his chariot.
येन चोग्रायुधो राजा चक्रवर्ती दुरासदः। दग्धः शस्त्रप्रतापेन स मया युधि घातितः ॥१२-२७-१०॥
yena cogrāyudho rājā cakravartī durāsadaḥ। dagdhaḥ śastrapratāpena sa mayā yudhi ghātitaḥ॥12-27-10॥

स्वयं मृत्युं रक्षमाणः पाञ्चाल्यं यः शिखण्डिनम्। न बाणैः पातयामास सोऽर्जुनेन निपातितः ॥१२-२७-११॥
svayaṃ mṛtyuṃ rakṣamāṇaḥ pāñcālyaṃ yaḥ śikhaṇḍinam। na bāṇaiḥ pātayāmāsa so'rjunena nipātitaḥ ॥12-27-11॥

He, who protected himself from death and did not bring down Śikhaṇḍin, the son of Drupada, with arrows, was struck down by Arjuna.
यदैनं पतितं भूमावपश्यं रुधिरोक्षितम्। तदैवाविशदत्युग्रो ज्वरो मे मुनिसत्तम ॥ येन संवर्धिता बाला येन स्म परिरक्षिताः ॥१२-२७-१२॥
yadainaṃ patitaṃ bhūmāvapaśyaṃ rudhirokṣitam। tadaivāviśadatyugro jvaro me munisattama ॥ yena saṃvardhitā bālā yena sma parirakṣitāḥ ॥12-27-12॥

(Which him fallen on the ground I saw, smeared with blood; then indeed entered very fierce fever my, O best of sages. By whom nourished (were) children, by whom indeed (were) protected.)
O best of sages, when I saw him fallen on the ground, smeared with blood, at that very moment a very fierce fever entered me. The one by whom the children were nourished, by whom indeed they were protected.
स मया राज्यलुब्धेन पापेन गुरुघातिना। अल्पकालस्य राज्यस्य कृते मूढेन घातितः ॥१२-२७-१३॥
sa mayā rājyalubdhena pāpena gurughātinā। alpakālasya rājyasya kṛte mūḍhena ghātitaḥ ॥12-27-13॥

(He by me, by one greedy for kingdom, by the sinful, by the slayer of the teacher, for the sake of a kingdom of short duration, by the deluded, was slain.)
He was slain by me, a sinful, deluded slayer of my teacher, greedy for the kingdom, for the sake of a kingdom that would last only a short time.
आचार्यश्च महेष्वासः सर्वपार्थिवपूजितः। अभिगम्य रणे मिथ्या पापेनोक्तः सुतं प्रति ॥१२-२७-१४॥
ācāryaś ca maheṣvāsaḥ sarva-pārthiva-pūjitaḥ। abhigamya raṇe mithyā pāpena uktaḥ sutaṃ prati ॥12-27-14॥

(The teacher and great archer, honored by all kings, having approached in battle, was falsely addressed by the wicked towards the son.)
The teacher, a great archer honored by all kings, was approached in battle and falsely accused by the wicked in front of his son.
तन्मे दहति गात्राणि यन्मां गुरुरभाषत। सत्यवाक्यो हि राजंस्त्वं यदि जीवति मे सुतः ॥ सत्यं मा मर्शयन्विप्रो मयि तत्परिपृष्टवान् ॥१२-२७-१५॥
tanme dahati gātrāṇi yanmāṃ gururabhāṣata। satyavākyo hi rājaṃstvaṃ yadi jīvati me sutaḥ ॥ satyaṃ mā marśayanvipro mayi tatparipṛṣṭavān ॥12-27-15॥
[तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; दहति (dahati) - burns; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - me; गुरुः (guruḥ) - the teacher; अभाषत (abhāṣata) - spoke; सत्यवाक्यः (satyavākyaḥ) - truth-speaking; हि (hi) - indeed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; त्वम् (tvam) - you; यदि (yadi) - if; जीवति (jīvati) - lives; मे (me) - my; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; माम् (mām) - me; मर्शयन् (marśayan) - considering; विप्रः (vipraḥ) - the sage; मयि (mayi) - to me; तत् (tat) - that; परिपृष्टवान् (paripṛṣṭavān) - asked thoroughly;]
(That which the teacher spoke to me burns my limbs. Indeed, O king, you are truth-speaking; if my son lives. The sage, considering the truth, thoroughly asked me that.)
What my teacher said to me burns my body. O king, if my son is alive, then you are truly a man of your word. The sage, reflecting on the truth, questioned me about it.
कुञ्जरं चान्तरं कृत्वा मिथ्योपचरितं मया। सुभृशं राज्यलुब्धेन पापेन गुरुघातिना ॥१२-२७-१६॥
kuñjaraṃ cāntaraṃ kṛtvā mithyopacaritaṃ mayā। subhṛśaṃ rājyalubdhena pāpena gurughātinā ॥12-27-16॥
[कुञ्जरम् (kuñjaram) - elephant; च (ca) - and; अन्तरम् (antaram) - interval; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsely; उपचरितम् (upacaritam) - treated; मया (mayā) - by me; सुभृशम् (subhṛśam) - excessively; राज्यलुब्धेन (rājyalubdhena) - by one greedy for kingdom; पापेन (pāpena) - by the sinful; गुरुघातिना (gurughātinā) - by the slayer of the teacher;]
(Elephant and interval having made, falsely treated by me, excessively by one greedy for kingdom, by the sinful, by the slayer of the teacher.)
I, excessively greedy for the kingdom, sinful, and a slayer of my teacher, made a false interval with the elephant.
सत्यकञ्चुकमास्थाय मयोक्तो गुरुराहवे। अश्वत्थामा हत इति कुञ्जरे विनिपातिते ॥ कान्नु लोकान्गमिष्यामि कृत्वा तत्कर्म दारुणम् ॥१२-२७-१७॥
satyakañcukam āsthāya mayokto gurur āhave। aśvatthāmā hata iti kuñjare vinipātite ॥ kān nu lokān gamiṣyāmi kṛtvā tat karma dāruṇam ॥12-27-17॥
[सत्यकञ्चुकम् (satyakañcukam) - truth as armor; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having assumed; मया (mayā) - by me; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - was said; गुरुः (guruḥ) - the teacher; आहवे (āhave) - in battle; अश्वत्थामा (aśvatthāmā) - Aśvatthāmā; हतः (hataḥ) - is slain; इति (iti) - thus; कुञ्जरे (kuñjare) - the elephant; विनिपातिते (vinipātite) - having been felled; कान् (kān) - which; नु (nu) - indeed; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; गमिष्यामि (gamiṣyāmi) - shall I attain; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; तत् (tat) - that; कर्म (karma) - deed; दारुणम् (dāruṇam) - terrible;]
(Having assumed truth as armor, by me it was said in battle to the teacher: 'Aśvatthāmā is slain,' thus, when the elephant was felled. Which worlds indeed shall I attain, having done that terrible deed?)
Having taken truth as my armor, I told the teacher in battle, 'Aśvatthāmā is slain,' when the elephant was killed. What worlds will I reach, having committed that dreadful act?
अघातयं च यत्कर्णं समरेष्वपलायिनम्। ज्येष्ठं भ्रातरमत्युग्रं को मत्तः पापकृत्तमः ॥१२-२७-१८॥
aghātayaṃ ca yat-karṇaṃ samareṣv-apalāyinam। jyeṣṭhaṃ bhrātaram-atyugraṃ ko mattaḥ pāpakṛttamaḥ ॥12-27-18॥
[अघातयम् (aghātayam) - not having killed; च (ca) - and; यत्कर्णम् (yat-karṇam) - that Karṇa; समरेषु (samareṣu) - in battles; अपलायिनम् (apalāyinam) - not fleeing; ज्येष्ठम् (jyeṣṭham) - eldest; भ्रातरम् (bhrātaram) - brother; अत्युग्रम् (atyugram) - very fierce; कः (kaḥ) - who; मत्तः (mattaḥ) - than me; पापकृत्-तमः (pāpakṛttamaḥ) - most sinful;]
(And not having killed that Karṇa, who does not flee in battles, the eldest and very fierce brother—who is more sinful than me?)
And not having slain that Karṇa, who never flees in battle, my eldest and most formidable brother—who could be more sinful than I am?
अभिमन्युं च यद्बालं जातं सिंहमिवाद्रिषु। प्रावेशयमहं लुब्धो वाहिनीं द्रोणपालिताम् ॥१२-२७-१९॥
abhimanyuṃ ca yad bālaṃ jātaṃ siṃham ivādriṣu। prāveśayam ahaṃ lubdho vāhinīṃ droṇa-pālitām ॥12-27-19॥

(Abhimanyu and who (was) a boy, born like a lion among mountains; I, greedy, caused (him) to enter the army protected by Droṇa.)
I, driven by desire, sent Abhimanyu, who was just a boy but born like a lion among mountains, into the army guarded by Droṇa.
तदाप्रभृति बीभत्सुं न शक्नोमि निरीक्षितुम्। कृष्णं च पुण्डरीकाक्षं किल्बिषी भ्रूणहा यथा ॥१२-२७-२०॥
tadāprabhṛti bībhatsuṃ na śaknomi nirīkṣitum। kṛṣṇaṃ ca puṇḍarīkākṣaṃ kilbiṣī bhrūṇahā yathā ॥12-27-20॥
[तदा (tadā) - then; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from that time; बीभत्सुम् (bībhatsum) - terrible; न (na) - not; शक्नोमि (śaknomi) - I am able; निरीक्षितुम् (nirīkṣitum) - to look at; कृष्णं (kṛṣṇam) - Kṛṣṇa; च (ca) - and; पुण्डरीकाक्षम् (puṇḍarīkākṣam) - lotus-eyed; किल्बिषी (kilbiṣī) - sinful; भ्रूणहा (bhrūṇahā) - killer of an embryo; यथा (yathā) - like;]
(Then from that time, the terrible one, I am not able to look at; Kṛṣṇa and the lotus-eyed one, sinful like a killer of an embryo.)
From that time, I have not been able to look at the terrible Kṛṣṇa, the lotus-eyed one, feeling sinful like a killer of an embryo.
द्रौपदीं चाप्यदुःखार्हां पञ्चपुत्रविनाकृताम्। शोचामि पृथिवीं हीनां पञ्चभिः पर्वतैरिव ॥१२-२७-२१॥
draupadīṃ cāpyaduḥkhārhāṃ pañcaputravinākṛtām। śocāmi pṛthivīṃ hīnāṃ pañcabhiḥ parvatairiva ॥12-27-21॥
[द्रौपदीम् (draupadīm) - Draupadī (accusative singular); च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अदुःखार्हाम् (aduḥkhārhām) - not deserving of sorrow; पञ्चपुत्रविनाकृताम् (pañcaputravinākṛtām) - deprived of five sons; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth (accusative singular); हीनाम् (hīnām) - bereft; पञ्चभिः (pañcabhiḥ) - by five; पर्वतैः (parvataiḥ) - mountains; इव (iva) - like;]
(I grieve for Draupadī also, who does not deserve sorrow, deprived of her five sons; I grieve for the earth, bereft of five mountains, as it were.)
I grieve for Draupadī, who did not deserve such sorrow and was deprived of her five sons; I also grieve for the earth, now bereft of her five heroes, like mountains lost from the land.
सोऽहमागस्करः पापः पृथिवीनाशकारकः। आसीन एवमेवेदं शोषयिष्ये कलेवरम् ॥१२-२७-२२॥
so'ham āgaskaraḥ pāpaḥ pṛthivīnāśakārakaḥ। āsīna evamevedaṃ śoṣayiṣye kalevaram ॥12-27-22॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; आगस्करः (āgaskaraḥ) - offender; पापः (pāpaḥ) - sinner; पृथिवी-नाश-कारकः (pṛthivī-nāśa-kārakaḥ) - earth-destruction-causer; आसीन् (āsīn) - sitting; एवम्-एव (evam-eva) - just so; इदं (idaṃ) - this; शोषयिष्ये (śoṣayiṣye) - I will dry up; कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body;]
(He I offender sinner earth-destruction-causer sitting just so this I will dry up body.)
I, being that offender, sinner, and destroyer of the earth, sitting just so, will dry up this body.
प्रायोपविष्टं जानीध्वमद्य मां गुरुघातिनम्। जातिष्वन्यास्वपि यथा न भवेयं कुलान्तकृत् ॥१२-२७-२३॥
prāyopaviṣṭaṃ jānīdhvam adya māṃ gurughātinam। jātiṣv anyāsv api yathā na bhaveyaṃ kulāntakṛt ॥12-27-23॥
[प्रायोपविष्टम् (prāyopaviṣṭam) - one who has sat down for fasting unto death; जानीध्वम् (jānīdhvam) - you all know; अद्य (adya) - today; माम् (mām) - me; गुरुघातिनम् (gurughātinam) - killer of the teacher; जातिषु (jātiṣu) - in births; अन्यासु (anyāsu) - other; अपि (api) - even; यथा (yathā) - so that; न (na) - not; भवेयम् (bhaveyam) - I may become; कुलान्तकृत् (kulāntakṛt) - destroyer of the family;]
(Know me today as one who has sat down for fasting unto death, as a killer of the teacher. So that even in other births I may not become a destroyer of the family.)
Today, know me as one who has undertaken a fast unto death, as the slayer of my teacher, so that I may never become a destroyer of the family, even in future births.
न भोक्ष्ये न च पानीयमुपयोक्ष्ये कथञ्चन। शोषयिष्ये प्रियान्प्राणानिहस्थोऽहं तपोधन ॥१२-२७-२४॥
na bhokṣye na ca pānīyam-upayokṣye kathañcana। śoṣayiṣye priyān prāṇān iha stho'haṃ tapodhana ॥12-27-24॥
[न (na) - not; भोक्ष्ये (bhokṣye) - I will eat; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; पानीयम् (pānīyam) - water; उपयोक्ष्ये (upayokṣye) - I will use; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; शोषयिष्ये (śoṣayiṣye) - I will dry up; प्रियान् (priyān) - dear; प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; इह (iha) - here; स्थः (sthaḥ) - standing; अहम् (aham) - I; तपोधन (tapodhana) - O ascetic rich in austerity;]
(Not I will eat, not and water I will use in any way. I will dry up dear lives here standing I O ascetic rich in austerity.)
O ascetic, I will neither eat nor use water in any way. Standing here, I will dry up my dear life-breaths.
यथेष्टं गम्यतां काममनुजाने प्रसाद्य वः। सर्वे मामनुजानीत त्यक्ष्यामीदं कलेवरम् ॥१२-२७-२५॥
yathezṭaṃ gamyatāṃ kāmamanujāne prasādya vaḥ। sarve māmanujānīta tyakṣyāmīdaṃ kalevaram ॥12-27-25॥
[यथेष्टम् (yathezṭam) - as desired; गम्यताम् (gamyatām) - let it be gone; कामम् (kāmam) - indeed; अनुजाने (anujāne) - I permit; प्रसाद्य (prasādya) - having propitiated; वः (vaḥ) - you (all); सर्वे (sarve) - all; माम् (mām) - me; अनुजानीत (anujānīta) - permit; त्यक्ष्यामि (tyakṣyāmi) - I shall abandon; इदम् (idam) - this; कलेवरम् (kalevaram) - body;]
(As desired, let it be gone; indeed, I permit, having propitiated you (all). All (of you) permit me; I shall abandon this body.)
Go as you wish; I grant you permission after propitiating you. All of you, please permit me; I shall give up this body.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥

Vaiśampāyana said.
तमेवंवादिनं पार्थं बन्धुशोकेन विह्वलम्। मैवमित्यब्रवीद्व्यासो निगृह्य मुनिसत्तमः ॥१२-२७-२६॥
tam evaṃ-vādinaṃ pārthaṃ bandhu-śokena vihvalam। maivam ity abravīd vyāso nigṛhya muni-sattamaḥ ॥12-27-26॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एवं-वादिनम् (evaṃ-vādinam) - thus-speaking; पार्थम् (pārtham) - Pārtha (Arjuna); बन्धु-शोकेन (bandhu-śokena) - by grief for relatives; विह्वलम् (vihvalam) - distressed; मैवम् (maivam) - not so; इति (iti) - thus; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; निगृह्य (nigṛhya) - restraining; मुनि-सत्तमः (muni-sattamaḥ) - the best among sages;]
(Him, thus speaking, Pārtha, distressed by grief for relatives; 'Not so'—thus said Vyāsa, restraining (him), the best among sages.)
Seeing Arjuna, overwhelmed by grief for his relatives and speaking thus, Vyāsa, the best among sages, restrained him and said, 'Not so.'
अतिवेलं महाराज न शोकं कर्तुमर्हसि। पुनरुक्तं प्रवक्ष्यामि दिष्टमेतदिति प्रभो ॥१२-२७-२७॥
ativelaṃ mahārāja na śokaṃ kartum arhasi। punaruktaṃ pravakṣyāmi diṣṭam etad iti prabho ॥12-27-27॥
[अतिवेलं (ativelaṃ) - excessively; beyond proper time; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; न (na) - not; शोकं (śokaṃ) - grief; कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; पुनरुक्तं (punaruktaṃ) - repeated; said again; प्रवक्ष्यामि (pravakṣyāmi) - I shall speak; दिष्टम् (diṣṭam) - ordained; destined; एतत् (etat) - this; इति (iti) - thus; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(O great king, you ought not to indulge in excessive grief. I shall again speak this which is ordained, O lord, thus.)
O great king, do not grieve excessively. I will again explain this which is destined, O lord.
संयोगा विप्रयोगाश्च जातानां प्राणिनां ध्रुवम्। बुद्बुदा इव तोयेषु भवन्ति न भवन्ति च ॥१२-२७-२८॥
saṃyogā viprayogāś ca jātānāṃ prāṇināṃ dhruvam। budbudā iva toyeṣu bhavanti na bhavanti ca ॥12-27-28॥
[संयोगाः (saṃyogāḥ) - unions; विप्रयोगाः (viprayogāḥ) - separations; च (ca) - and; जातानाम् (jātānām) - of the born; प्राणिनाम् (prāṇinām) - of living beings; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - certain; बुद्बुदाः (budbudāḥ) - bubbles; इव (iva) - like; तोयेषु (toyeṣu) - in waters; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - arise; न (na) - not; भवन्ति (bhavanti) - arise; च (ca) - and;]
(Unions and separations of the born living beings are certain; like bubbles in waters, they arise and do not arise.)
The unions and separations of living beings who are born are inevitable; just as bubbles appear and disappear in water, so too do these connections come and go.
सर्वे क्षयान्ता निचयाः पतनान्ताः समुच्छ्रयाः। संयोगा विप्रयोगान्ता मरणान्तं हि जीवितम् ॥१२-२७-२९॥
sarve kṣayāntā nicayāḥ patanāntāḥ samucchrayāḥ। saṃyogā viprayogāntā maraṇāntaṃ hi jīvitam ॥12-27-29॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; क्षयान्ता (kṣayāntāḥ) - ending in decay; निचयाः (nicayāḥ) - accumulations; पतनान्ताः (patanāntāḥ) - ending in fall; समुच्छ्रयाः (samucchrayāḥ) - risings; संयोगाः (saṃyogāḥ) - unions; विप्रयोगान्ताः (viprayogāntāḥ) - ending in separation; मरणान्तम् (maraṇāntam) - ending in death; हि (hi) - indeed; जीवितम् (jīvitam) - life;]
(All accumulations end in decay; all risings end in fall; all unions end in separation; life indeed ends in death.)
All gatherings end in decay, all risings end in a fall, all unions end in separation, and life indeed ends in death.
सुखं दुःखान्तमालस्यं दाक्ष्यं दुःखं सुखोदयम्। भूतिः श्रीर्ह्रीर्धृतिः सिद्धिर्नादक्षे निवसन्त्युत ॥१२-२७-३०॥
sukhaṃ duḥkhāntam ālasyaṃ dākṣyaṃ duḥkhaṃ sukhodayam। bhūtiḥ śrīr hrīr dhṛtiḥ siddhir nādakṣe nivasanty uta॥12-27-30॥
[सुखं (sukham) - happiness; दुःखान्तम् (duḥkhāntam) - end of sorrow; आलस्यं (ālasyaṃ) - laziness; दाक्ष्यं (dākṣyam) - dexterity; दुःखं (duḥkham) - sorrow; सुखोदयम् (sukhodayam) - rise of happiness; भूतिः (bhūtiḥ) - prosperity; श्रीः (śrīḥ) - fortune; ह्रीः (hrīḥ) - modesty; धृतिः (dhṛtiḥ) - fortitude; सिद्धिः (siddhiḥ) - success; न (na) - not; अदक्षे (adakṣe) - in the incompetent; निवसन्ति (nivasanti) - reside; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(Happiness is the end of sorrow, laziness is dexterity, sorrow is the rise of happiness. Prosperity, fortune, modesty, fortitude, and success do not reside in the incompetent indeed.)
Happiness comes at the end of sorrow; laziness is the opposite of dexterity; sorrow leads to the rise of happiness. Prosperity, fortune, modesty, fortitude, and success never dwell in the incompetent.
नालं सुखाय सुहृदो नालं दुःखाय दुर्हृदः। न च प्रज्ञालमर्थेभ्यो न सुखेभ्योऽप्यलं धनम् ॥१२-२७-३१॥
nālaṃ sukhāya suhṛdo nālaṃ duḥkhāya durhṛdaḥ। na ca prajñālamarthebhyo na sukhebhyo'pyalaṃ dhanam ॥12-27-31॥
[न (na) - not; अलम् (alam) - sufficient; enough; सुखाय (sukhāya) - for happiness; सुहृदः (suhṛdaḥ) - friends; good-hearted ones; न (na) - not; अलम् (alam) - sufficient; enough; दुःखाय (duḥkhāya) - for sorrow; दुर्हृदः (durhṛdaḥ) - evil-hearted ones; bad-hearted ones; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; प्रज्ञा (prajñā) - wisdom; discernment; अलम् (alam) - sufficient; enough; अर्थेभ्यः (arthebhyaḥ) - for objects; for wealth; न (na) - not; सुखेभ्यः (sukhebhyaḥ) - for pleasures; for happiness; अपि (api) - even; अलम् (alam) - sufficient; enough; धनम् (dhanam) - wealth;]
(Not enough for happiness are friends; not enough for sorrow are evil-hearted ones. Nor is wisdom sufficient for objects, nor is wealth sufficient even for pleasures.)
Friends alone are not enough for happiness, nor are evil-hearted people alone enough for sorrow. Wisdom alone is not sufficient for gaining objects, nor is wealth alone sufficient even for happiness.
यथा सृष्टोऽसि कौन्तेय धात्रा कर्मसु तत्कुरु। अत एव हि सिद्धिस्ते नेशस्त्वमात्मना नृप ॥१२-२७-३२॥
yathā sṛṣṭo'si kaunteya dhātrā karmasu tat kuru। ata eva hi siddhis te neśas tvam ātmanā nṛpa ॥12-27-32॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in the manner; as created; as ordained; सृष्टः (sṛṣṭaḥ) - created; formed; असि (asi) - you are; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; धात्रा (dhātrā) - by the Creator; by the ordainer; कर्मसु (karmasu) - in actions; in duties; तत् (tat) - that; कुरु (kuru) - do; perform; अतः (ataḥ) - therefore; hence; एव (eva) - indeed; certainly; हि (hi) - for; indeed; सिद्धिः (siddhiḥ) - success; accomplishment; ते (te) - your; for you; न (na) - not; ईशः (īśaḥ) - master; lord; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by oneself; by your own self; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(As you have been created, O son of Kunti, by the Creator, so act in your duties. Therefore, indeed, success is yours; you are not the master by your own self, O king.)
O son of Kunti, act in accordance with how you have been created by the Creator, in your duties. Therefore, success will be yours; you are not the master by your own self, O king.
