ततो राजा पाण्डुसुतो नारदं प्रत्यभाषत। भगवञ्श्रोतुमिच्छामि सुवर्णष्ठीविसम्भवम् ॥१२-३१-१॥
tato rājā pāṇḍusuto nāradaṃ pratyabhāṣata। bhagavañchrotumicchāmi suvarṇaṣṭhīvisambhavam ॥12-31-1॥

एवमुक्तः स च मुनिर्धर्मराजेन नारदः। आचचक्षे यथा वृत्तं सुवर्णष्ठीविनं प्रति ॥१२-३१-२॥

एवमेतन्महाराज यथायं केशवोऽब्रवीत्। कार्यस्यास्य तु यच्छेषं तत्ते वक्ष्यामि पृच्छतः ॥१२-३१-३॥
evam etan mahārāja yathā ayaṃ keśavaḥ abravīt। kāryasya asya tu yat śeṣam tat te vakṣyāmi pṛcchataḥ ॥12-31-3॥

(Thus this, O great king, as this Keśava spoke: Of this task, but what remains, that to you I shall speak, (as you are) asking.)
O great king, it is just as Keśava has spoken. But as you are asking, I shall tell you what remains to be done in this task.
अहं च पर्वतश्चैव स्वस्रीयो मे महामुनिः। वस्तुकामावभिगतौ सृञ्जयं जयतां वरम् ॥१२-३१-४॥
ahaṃ ca parvataścaiva svasrīyo me mahāmuniḥ। vastukāmāvabhigatau sṛñjayaṃ jayatāṃ varam ॥12-31-4॥

(I and Parvata indeed, my maternal cousin, the great sage, both desiring an object, having approached Sṛñjaya, the best of the victorious.)

तत्र सम्पूजितौ तेन विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा। सर्वकामैः सुविहितौ निवसावोऽस्य वेश्मनि ॥१२-३१-५॥
tatra sampūjitau tena vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā। sarvakāmaiḥ suvihitau nivasāvo'sya veśmani ॥12-31-5॥

(There, both honored by him with the act prescribed by rule, well-provided with all desires, let us dwell in his house.)
There, having been duly honored by him according to prescribed rites and with all desires fulfilled, let us reside in his house.
व्यतिक्रान्तासु वर्षासु समये गमनस्य च। पर्वतो मामुवाचेदं काले वचनमर्थवत् ॥१२-३१-६॥
vyatikrāntāsu varṣāsu samaye gamanasya ca। parvato māmuvācedaṃ kāle vacanamarthavat॥12-31-6॥
[व्यतिक्रान्तासु (vyatikrāntāsu) - having passed; (in) the elapsed; वर्षासु (varṣāsu) - in the years; in the rainy seasons; समये (samaye) - at the time; गमनस्य (gamanasya) - of going; of departure; च (ca) - and; पर्वतः (parvataḥ) - the mountain; माम् (mām) - to me; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदं (idaṃ) - this; काले (kāle) - at the time; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; statement; अर्थवत् (arthavat) - meaningful; significant;]
(Having passed the years, at the time of departure, the mountain said this meaningful statement to me at the time.)
When the years had passed and it was time to depart, the mountain spoke these meaningful words to me.
आवामस्य नरेन्द्रस्य गृहे परमपूजितौ। उषितौ समये ब्रह्मंश्चिन्त्यतामत्र साम्प्रतम् ॥१२-३१-७॥
āvāmasya narendrasya gṛhe paramapūjitau। uṣitau samaye brahmaṃścintyatāmatra sāmpratam ॥12-31-7॥

We two have been greatly honored and have stayed in this king's house; O Brahman, let us now consider what should be done here at this time.
ततोऽहमब्रुवं राजन्पर्वतं शुभदर्शनम्। सर्वमेतत्त्वयि विभो भागिनेयोपपद्यते ॥१२-३१-८॥
tato'ham abruvaṃ rājan parvataṃ śubhadarśanam। sarvam etat tvayi vibho bhāgineya upapadyate ॥12-31-8॥

(Then I spoke, O king, "The mountain is auspicious-looking. All this, O mighty one, O son of a sister, befits you.")
Then I said, O king, "This auspicious-looking mountain and everything here is fitting for you, O mighty one, O son of a sister."
वरेण छन्द्यतां राजा लभतां यद्यदिच्छति। आवयोस्तपसा सिद्धिं प्राप्नोतु यदि मन्यसे ॥१२-३१-९॥
vareṇa chand-yatāṃ rājā labhatāṃ yadyad icchati। āvayos tapasā siddhiṃ prāpnvotu yadi manyase॥12-31-9॥
[वरेण (vareṇa) - by a boon; छन्द्यतां (chandyatām) - let (him) be pleased; राजा (rājā) - the king; लभतां (labhatām) - let (him) obtain; यद्यद् (yadyad) - whatever; इच्छति (icchati) - he desires; आवयोः (āvayoḥ) - of us two; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; सिद्धिं (siddhiṃ) - success; प्राप्नोतु (prāpnvotu) - let (him) attain; यदि (yadi) - if; मन्यसे (manyase) - you think;]
(By a boon let the king be pleased, let him obtain whatever he desires. Of us two, by austerity, let him attain success, if you think (so).)
Let the king be gratified by a boon and obtain whatever he wishes. If you think fit, let him attain success by our austerity.
तत आहूय राजानं सृञ्जयं शुभदर्शनम्। पर्वतोऽनुमतं वाक्यमुवाच मुनिपुङ्गवः ॥१२-३१-१०॥
tata āhūya rājānaṃ sṛñjayaṃ śubhadarśanam। parvato'numataṃ vākyamuvāca munipuṅgavaḥ ॥12-31-10॥

(Then, having summoned King Sṛñjaya of auspicious appearance, Parvata, the eminent sage, spoke words to Anumata.)
Then Parvata, the eminent sage, called King Sṛñjaya, who was of auspicious appearance, and spoke to Anumata.
प्रीतौ स्वो नृप सत्कारैस्तव ह्यार्जवसम्भृतैः। आवाभ्यामभ्यनुज्ञातो वरं नृवर चिन्तय ॥१२-३१-११॥
prītau svo nṛpa satkāraistava hyārjavasambhṛtaiḥ। āvābhyāmabhyanujñāto varaṃ nṛvara cintaya ॥12-31-11॥
[प्रीतौ (prītau) - in affection; in love; स्वः (svaḥ) - your own; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; सत्कारैः (satkāraiḥ) - with honors; तव (tava) - your; हि (hi) - indeed; आर्जवसम्भृतैः (ārjavasambhṛtaiḥ) - accompanied by sincerity; आवाभ्याम् (āvābhyām) - by both of us; अभ्यनुज्ञातः (abhyanujñātaḥ) - permitted; approved; वरम् (varam) - a boon; wish; नृवर (nṛvara) - O best of kings; चिन्तय (cintaya) - consider; think;]
(In affection, your own, O king, with honors, your, indeed, accompanied by sincerity, by both of us, permitted, a boon, O best of kings, consider.)
O best of kings, in affection, with honors of your own, indeed accompanied by sincerity, you have been permitted by both of us; consider a boon.
देवानामविहिंसायां यद्भवेन्मानुषक्षमम्। तद्गृहाण महाराज पूजार्हो नौ मतो भवान् ॥१२-३१-१२॥
devānām avihiṁsāyāṁ yad bhaven mānuṣa-kṣamam। tad gṛhāṇa mahārāja pūjārho nau mato bhavān॥12-31-12॥
[देवानाम् (devānām) - of the gods; अविहिंसायाम् (avihiṁsāyām) - in non-injury; यत् (yat) - which; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; मानुषक्षमम् (mānuṣa-kṣamam) - fit for a human; तत् (tat) - that; गृहाण (gṛhāṇa) - accept; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; पूजार्हः (pūjārhaḥ) - worthy of worship; नः (naḥ) - by us; मतः (mataḥ) - is considered; भवान् (bhavān) - yourself;]
(Of the gods in non-injury which may be fit for a human, that accept, O great king; worthy of worship by us is considered yourself.)
O great king, whatever among the non-injurious offerings to the gods is suitable for a human, please accept that; you are considered by us as worthy of worship.
सृञ्जय उवाच॥

प्रीतौ भवन्तौ यदि मे कृतमेतावता मम। एष एव परो लाभो निर्वृत्तो मे महाफलः ॥१२-३१-१३॥
prītau bhavantau yadi me kṛtam etāvatā mama। eṣa eva paro lābho nirvṛtto me mahāphalaḥ ॥12-31-13॥
[प्रीतौ (prītau) - in affection; in love; भवन्तौ (bhavantau) - you both are; यदि (yadi) - if; मे (me) - to me; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; एतावता (etāvatā) - by this much; मम (mama) - my; एष (eṣa) - this; एव (eva) - indeed; परः (paraḥ) - supreme; लाभः (lābhaḥ) - gain; निर्वृत्तः (nirvṛttaḥ) - accomplished; मे (me) - for me; महाफलः (mahāphalaḥ) - great fruit;]
(In affection you both are; if to me done by this much my. This indeed supreme gain accomplished for me great fruit.)
If you both are affectionate to me, then by this alone my purpose is fulfilled; this indeed is the greatest gain and the highest fruit for me.
नारद उवाच॥

तमेवंवादिनं भूयः पर्वतः प्रत्यभाषत। वृणीष्व राजन्सङ्कल्पो यस्ते हृदि चिरं स्थितः ॥१२-३१-१४॥
tam evaṃvādinam bhūyaḥ parvataḥ pratyabhāṣata। vṛṇīṣva rājan saṅkalpo yas te hṛdi ciraṃ sthitaḥ ॥12-31-14॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एवं-वादिनम् (evaṃ-vādinam) - thus-speaking; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; पर्वतः (parvataḥ) - the mountain; प्रत्यभाषत (pratyabhāṣata) - addressed; वृणीष्व (vṛṇīṣva) - choose; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सङ्कल्पः (saṅkalpaḥ) - wish; यः (yaḥ) - which; ते (te) - your; हृदि (hṛdi) - in (the) heart; चिरम् (ciram) - for a long time; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - remained;]
(The mountain again addressed him who was thus-speaking: "Choose, O king, the wish which has remained in your heart for a long time.")
The mountain again spoke to him who had spoken thus: "O king, choose the wish that has long remained in your heart."
सृञ्जय उवाच॥

अभीप्सामि सुतं वीरं वीर्यवन्तं दृढव्रतम्। आयुष्मन्तं महाभागं देवराजसमद्युतिम् ॥१२-३१-१५॥
abhīpsāmi sutaṃ vīraṃ vīryavantaṃ dṛḍhavratam। āyuṣmantaṃ mahābhāgaṃ devarājasamadyutim ॥12-31-15॥
[अभीप्सामि (abhīpsāmi) - I desire; I wish; सुतं (sutaṃ) - son; child; वीरं (vīraṃ) - heroic; brave; वीर्यवन्तं (vīryavantaṃ) - possessing strength; powerful; दृढव्रतम् (dṛḍhavratam) - firm in vow; resolute in resolve; आयुष्मन्तं (āyuṣmantaṃ) - long-lived; endowed with life; महाभागं (mahābhāgaṃ) - greatly fortunate; highly blessed; देवराजसमद्युतिम् (devarājasamadyutim) - having brilliance like the king of gods (Indra); । (।) - ॥१२-३१-१५॥ (॥12-31-15॥) -;]
(I desire a son, heroic, possessing strength, firm in vow, long-lived, greatly fortunate, having brilliance like the king of gods (Indra).)
I wish for a son who is heroic, strong, resolute in his vows, long-lived, greatly fortunate, and radiant like Indra, the king of the gods.
पर्वत उवाच॥

(mountain said;)
The mountain said:
भविष्यत्येष ते कामो न त्वायुष्मान्भविष्यति। देवराजाभिभूत्यर्थं सङ्कल्पो ह्येष ते हृदि ॥१२-३१-१६॥
bhaviṣyatyeṣa te kāmo na tvāyuṣmānbhaviṣyati। devarājābhibhūtyarthaṃ saṅkalpo hyeṣa te hṛdi ॥12-31-16॥

(This desire of yours will be, but you will not be long-lived. Indeed, this resolve for the purpose of conquering Indra is in your heart.)
Your desire will be fulfilled, but you will not live long. Indeed, this resolve to conquer Indra is in your heart.
सुवर्णष्ठीवनाच्चैव स्वर्णष्ठीवी भविष्यति। रक्ष्यश्च देवराजात्स देवराजसमद्युतिः ॥१२-३१-१७॥
suvarṇaṣṭhīvanāccaiva svarṇaṣṭhīvī bhaviṣyati। rakṣyaśca devarājāts sa devarājasamadyutiḥ ॥12-31-17॥
[सुवर्ण (suvarṇa) - gold; ष्ठीवनात् (ṣṭhīvanāt) - from spitting; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; स्वर्णष्ठीवी (svarṇaṣṭhīvī) - golden spittle; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; रक्ष्यः (rakṣyaḥ) - to be protected; च (ca) - and; देवराजात् (devarājāt) - from the king of gods; सः (saḥ) - he; देवराजसमद्युतिः (devarājasamadyutiḥ) - having brilliance equal to the king of gods;]
(And from the spitting of gold, indeed, golden spittle will become. And he, to be protected by the king of gods, will have brilliance equal to the king of gods.)
From the spitting of gold, golden spittle will be produced. He, protected by the king of gods, will possess a brilliance equal to that of the king of gods.
नारद उवाच॥

तच्छ्रुत्वा सृञ्जयो वाक्यं पर्वतस्य महात्मनः। प्रसादयामास तदा नैतदेवं भवेदिति ॥१२-३१-१८॥
tacchrutvā sṛñjayo vākyaṃ parvatasya mahātmanaḥ। prasādayāmāsa tadā naitad evaṃ bhaved iti ॥12-31-18॥
[तत् (tat) - that; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; सृञ्जयः (sṛñjayaḥ) - Sṛñjaya; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; पर्वतस्य (parvatasya) - of Parvata; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; प्रसादयामास (prasādayāmāsa) - caused to be pleased; तदा (tadā) - then; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; एवम् (evam) - thus; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; इति (iti) - thus;]
(That having heard, Sṛñjaya the words of Parvata the great-souled, caused to be pleased then, "Not this thus should be" thus.)
Having heard this, Sṛñjaya, hearing the words of the great-souled Parvata, then sought to appease him, saying, "It should not be so."
आयुष्मान्मे भवेत्पुत्रो भवतस्तपसा मुने। न च तं पर्वतः किञ्चिदुवाचेन्द्रव्यपेक्षया ॥१२-३१-१९॥
āyuṣmān me bhavet putro bhavatas tapasā mune। na ca taṃ parvataḥ kiñcid uvāca indra-vyapekṣayā ॥12-31-19॥
[आयुष्मान् (āyuṣmān) - long-lived; मे (me) - to me; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; भवतः (bhavataḥ) - by you; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; मुने (mune) - O sage; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; तम् (tam) - him; पर्वतः (parvataḥ) - the mountain; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इन्द्रव्यपेक्षया (indra-vyapekṣayā) - out of regard for Indra;]
(Long-lived to me may be a son by your austerity, O sage; and the mountain did not say anything to him out of regard for Indra.)
O sage, may I have a long-lived son by your austerity; but the mountain, out of respect for Indra, did not say anything to him.
तमहं नृपतिं दीनमब्रुवं पुनरेव तु। स्मर्तव्योऽहं महाराज दर्शयिष्यामि ते स्मृतः ॥१२-३१-२०॥
tam ahaṃ nṛpatiṃ dīnam abruvaṃ punar eva tu। smartavyo'ham mahārāja darśayiṣyāmi te smṛtaḥ ॥12-31-20॥

(Him I, the distressed king, said again indeed but. To be remembered I, O great king, I will show to you, remembered.)
I spoke again to the distressed king, saying, "O great king, I must be remembered; I will show myself to you when remembered."
अहं ते दयितं पुत्रं प्रेतराजवशं गतम्। पुनर्दास्यामि तद्रूपं मा शुचः पृथिवीपते ॥१२-३१-२१॥
ahaṃ te dayitaṃ putraṃ pretarājavaśaṃ gatam। punardāsyāmi tadrūpaṃ mā śucaḥ pṛthivīpate ॥12-31-21॥
[पृथिवीपते (pṛthivīpate) - O king of the earth;]

चोदयामास वज्रं स दिव्यास्त्रं मूर्तिसंस्थितम्। व्याघ्रो भूत्वा जहीमं त्वं राजपुत्रमिति प्रभो ॥१२-३१-२७॥
codayāmāsa vajraṃ sa divyāstraṃ mūrtisaṃsthitam। vyāghro bhūtvā jahīmaṃ tvaṃ rājaputramiti prabho ॥12-31-27॥

(From there, upwards, the prince, he, golden spittoon-bearer, of great fame, mind, caused to be pleased, of the father, of the mother, and, powerful.)
After that, the powerful prince, the golden spittoon-bearer of great fame, pleased the minds of his father and mother.
कारयामास राज्यं स पितरि स्वर्गते विभुः। वर्षाणामेकशतवत्सहस्रं भीमविक्रमः ॥१२-३१-४३॥

(He, the mighty one of terrible prowess, caused the kingdom to be ruled when his father had gone to heaven, for one hundred thousand years.)
When his father passed away, he, the mighty one of terrible prowess, ruled the kingdom for one hundred thousand years.
तत इष्ट्वा महायज्ञैर्बहुभिर्भूरिदक्षिणैः। तर्पयामास देवांश्च पितॄंश्चैव महाद्युतिः ॥१२-३१-४४॥
tata iṣṭvā mahāyajñair bahubhir bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ। tarpayāmāsa devāṃś ca pitṝṃś caiva mahādyutiḥ ॥12-31-44॥
[तत् (tat) - then; इष्ट्वा (iṣṭvā) - having worshipped; महायज्ञैः (mahāyajñaiḥ) - with great sacrifices; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - with many; भूरिदक्षिणैः (bhūridakṣiṇaiḥ) - with abundant gifts; तर्पयामास (tarpayāmāsa) - satisfied; देवान् (devān) - the gods; च (ca) - and; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - the ancestors; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; महाद्युतिः (mahādyutiḥ) - the greatly resplendent one;]
(Then, having worshipped with great sacrifices, with many abundant gifts, the greatly resplendent one satisfied the gods and the ancestors indeed.)
Then the greatly resplendent one, having performed great sacrifices with many abundant gifts, satisfied both the gods and the ancestors.
उत्पाद्य च बहून्पुत्रान्कुलसन्तानकारिणः। कालेन महता राजन्कालधर्ममुपेयिवान् ॥१२-३१-४५॥
utpādya ca bahūn putrān kulasantānakāriṇaḥ। kālena mahatā rājan kāladharmam upeyivān ॥12-31-45॥
[उत्पाद्य (utpādya) - having produced; च (ca) - and; बहून् (bahūn) - many; पुत्रान् (putrān) - sons; कुलसन्तानकारिणः (kulasantānakāriṇaḥ) - causing the continuation of the lineage; कालेन (kālena) - by time; महता (mahatā) - great; राजन् (rājan) - O king; कालधर्मम् (kāladharmam) - the law of time (death); उपेयिवान् (upeyivān) - attained;]
(Having produced many sons who caused the continuation of the lineage, and by the great time, O king, he attained the law of time (death).)
O king, after producing many sons who continued the family line, in due course of great time, he met his destined end (death).
स त्वं राजेन्द्र सञ्जातं शोकमेतन्निवर्तय। यथा त्वां केशवः प्राह व्यासश्च सुमहातपाः ॥१२-३१-४६॥
sa tvaṃ rājendra sañjātaṃ śokam etan nivartaya। yathā tvāṃ keśavaḥ prāha vyāsaś ca sumahātapāḥ ॥12-31-46॥
[स (sa) - he; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; सञ्जातं (sañjātam) - arisen; शोकम् (śokam) - sorrow; एतत् (etat) - this; निवर्तय (nivartaya) - remove; यथा (yathā) - just as; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; केशवः (keśavaḥ) - Keśava; प्राह (prāha) - said; व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa; च (ca) - and; सुमहातपाः (sumahātapāḥ) - of great austerity;]
(He, O king, remove this arisen sorrow, just as Keśava and Vyāsa of great austerity told you.)
O king, dispel this sorrow that has arisen, as Keśava and the greatly austere Vyāsa have instructed you.
पितृपैतामहं राज्यमास्थाय दुरमुद्वह। इष्ट्वा पुण्यैर्महायज्ञैरिष्टाँल्लोकानवाप्स्यसि ॥१२-३१-४७॥
pitṛpaitāmahaṃ rājyam āsthāya duramudvaha | iṣṭvā puṇyair mahāyajñair iṣṭāṃl lokān avāpsyasi ॥12-31-47॥
[पितृपैतामहं (pitṛpaitāmaham) - ancestral; (of) father and grandfather; राज्यम् (rājyam) - kingdom; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having assumed; दुरमुद्वह (duramudvaha) - O bearer of heavy burden; इष्ट्वा (iṣṭvā) - having worshipped; पुण्यैः (puṇyaiḥ) - with meritorious; महायज्ञैः (mahāyajñaiḥ) - great sacrifices; इष्टान् (iṣṭān) - desired; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will attain;]
(Having assumed the ancestral kingdom, O bearer of heavy burden, having worshipped with meritorious great sacrifices, you will attain the desired worlds.)
