ततः कदाचित्तौ राजा महात्मानौ तथागतौ। अब्रवीत्परमप्रीतः सुतेयं वरवर्णिनी ॥१२-३०-११॥
tataḥ kadācittau rājā mahātmānau tathāgatau। abravīt paramaprītaḥ sute 'yaṃ varavarṇinī ॥12-30-11॥

परमं सौम्य इत्युक्तस्ताभ्यां राजा शशास ताम्। कन्ये विप्रावुपचर देववत्पितृवच्च ह ॥१२-३०-१३॥

(Supreme gentle one, thus spoken by those two, the king ruled her. O maiden, O brāhmaṇas, serve (her) like a god and like a father indeed.)

सा तु कन्या तथेत्युक्त्वा पितरं धर्मचारिणी। यथानिदेशं राज्ञस्तौ सत्कृत्योपचचार ह ॥१२-३०-१४॥

तस्यास्तथोपचारेण रूपेणाप्रतिमेन च। नारदं हृच्छयस्तूर्णं सहसैवान्वपद्यत ॥१२-३०-१५॥
tasyās tathopacāreṇa rūpeṇāpratimena ca। nāradaṃ hṛcchayas tūrṇaṃ sahasaivānvapadyata ॥12-30-15॥

(Of her, thus by the service, by the form, by the incomparable and, Nārada, desire in the heart quickly suddenly indeed befell.)
By her service and her incomparable form, a sudden and intense desire arose in Nārada's heart.
ववृधे च ततस्तस्य हृदि कामो महात्मनः। यथा शुक्लस्य पक्षस्य प्रवृत्तावुडुराट्छनैः ॥१२-३०-१६॥
vavṛdhe ca tatasttasya hṛdi kāmo mahātmanaḥ। yathā śuklasya pakṣasya pravṛttāvuḍurāṭśanaiḥ ॥12-30-16॥
[ववृधे (vavṛdhe) - grew; increased; च (ca) - and; ततः (tataḥ) - then; from that; तस्य (tasya) - his; of him; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; कामः (kāmaḥ) - desire; love; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; यथा (yathā) - just as; like; शुक्लस्य (śuklasya) - of the bright (fortnight); पक्षस्य (pakṣasya) - of the fortnight; प्रवृत्तौ (pravṛttau) - at the beginning; उडुराट् (uḍurāṭ) - the moon; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly; gradually;]
(And then, in his heart, desire grew in the great-souled one, just as, at the beginning of the bright fortnight, the moon (grows) slowly.)

न च तं भागिनेयाय पर्वताय महात्मने। शशंस मन्मथं तीव्रं व्रीडमानः स धर्मवित् ॥१२-३०-१७॥

तपसा चेङ्गितेनाथ पर्वतोऽथ बुबोध तत्। कामार्तं नारदं क्रुद्धः शशापैनं ततो भृशम् ॥१२-३०-१८॥
tapasā ceṅgitena atha parvato 'tha bubodha tat | kāmārtaṃ nāradaṃ kruddhaḥ śaśāpa enaṃ tato bhṛśam ||12-30-18||

anyonyasya sa ākhyeya iti tad vai mṛṣā kṛtam। bhavatā vacanaṃ brahmaṃs tasmād etad vadāmy aham ॥12-30-20॥

(Of each other, he is to be told thus; that indeed was done falsely by you. O Brāhmaṇa, therefore, this I say, I.)
He is to be described as belonging to each other; that was indeed falsely done by you. Therefore, O Brāhmaṇa, I say this.
न हि कामं प्रवर्तन्तं भवानाचष्ट मे पुरा। सुकुमार्यां कुमार्यां ते तस्मादेष शपाम्यहम् ॥१२-३०-२१॥
na hi kāmaṃ pravartantaṃ bhavān ācaṣṭa me purā। sukumāryāṃ kumāryāṃ te tasmād eṣa śapāmy aham ॥12-30-21॥
[न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; प्रवर्तन्तम् (pravartantam) - arising; भवान् (bhavān) - you; आचष्ट (ācaṣṭa) - spoke; मे (me) - to me; पुरा (purā) - formerly; सुकुमार्यां (sukumāryām) - in the delicate maiden; कुमार्यां (kumāryām) - in the maiden; ते (te) - your; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; शपामि (śapāmi) - I swear; अहम् (aham) - I;]
(Not indeed desire arising you spoke to me formerly. In the delicate maiden, in the maiden, your, therefore, this I swear I.)
You never told me before about any desire arising. Therefore, regarding your delicate maiden, I now swear this.
ब्रह्मवादी गुरुर्यस्मात्तपस्वी ब्राह्मणश्च सन्। अकार्षीः समयभ्रंशमावाभ्यां यः कृतो मिथः ॥१२-३०-२२॥
brahmavādī gururyasmāttapasvī brāhmaṇaśca san। akāṛṣīḥ samayabhraṃśamāvābhyāṃ yaḥ kṛto mithaḥ ॥12-30-22॥
[ब्रह्मवादी (brahmavādī) - one who speaks of Brahman; गुरुः (guruḥ) - teacher; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because of whom; तपस्वी (tapasvī) - ascetic; ब्राह्मणः (brāhmaṇaḥ) - brāhmaṇa; च (ca) - and; सन् (san) - being; अकार्षीः (akārṣīḥ) - you did; समयभ्रंशम् (samayabhraṃśam) - violation of agreement; आवाभ्याम् (āvābhyām) - by both of us; यः (yaḥ) - which; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - was done; मिथः (mithaḥ) - mutually;]
(One who speaks of Brahman, the teacher, because of whom, being an ascetic and a brāhmaṇa, you did the violation of agreement by both of us, which was done mutually.)
Because you, being a brāhmaṇa, an ascetic, and a teacher who speaks of Brahman, have mutually committed a violation of our agreement.
शप्स्ये तस्मात्सुसङ्क्रुद्धो भवन्तं तं निबोध मे। सुकुमारी च ते भार्या भविष्यति न संशयः ॥१२-३०-२३॥
śapsye tasmātsusaṅkruddho bhavantaṃ taṃ nibodha me। sukumārī ca te bhāryā bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ ॥12-30-23॥
[शप्स्ये (śapsye) - I shall curse; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; सुसङ्क्रुद्धः (susaṅkruddhaḥ) - very enraged; भवन्तम् (bhavantaṃ) - you; तम् (tam) - him; निबोध (nibodha) - know; मे (me) - from me; सुकुमारी (sukumārī) - delicate woman; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(I shall curse; therefore, very enraged, you, him, know from me. Delicate woman and your wife will be, not doubt.)
Therefore, being very enraged, I shall curse him—know this from me. Your wife will be a delicate woman; there is no doubt about it.
वानरं चैव कन्या त्वां विवाहात्प्रभृति प्रभो। संद्रक्ष्यन्ति नराश्चान्ये स्वरूपेण विनाकृतम् ॥१२-३०-२४॥
vānaraṃ caiva kanyā tvāṃ vivāhātprabhṛti prabho| sandrakṣyanti narāścānye svarūpeṇa vinākṛtam ||12-30-24||

(The monkey and indeed the maiden, you, from (the time of) marriage, O lord, men and others will observe, deprived of (your) true form.)
O lord, from the time of your marriage, men and others will see the monkey and the maiden (you) without your true form.
स तद्वाक्यं तु विज्ञाय नारदः पर्वतात्तदा। अशपत्तमपि क्रोधाद्भागिनेयं स मातुलः ॥१२-३०-२५॥
sa tadvākyaṃ tu vijñāya nāradaḥ parvatāttadā। aśapat tam api krodhād bhāgineyaṃ sa mātulaḥ ॥12-30-25॥

(He, having understood that speech, Nārada then from Parvata, out of anger, cursed him also, the nephew, he the maternal uncle.)
Nārada, having understood those words, then, being angry, cursed his nephew Parvata, he being the maternal uncle.
तपसा ब्रह्मचर्येण सत्येन च दमेन च। युक्तोऽपि धर्मनित्यश्च न स्वर्गवासमाप्स्यसि ॥१२-३०-२६॥
tapasā brahmacaryeṇa satyena ca damena ca। yukto'pi dharmanityaśca na svargavāsamāpsyasi ॥12-30-26॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; ब्रह्मचर्येण (brahmacaryeṇa) - by celibacy; सत्येन (satyena) - by truth; च (ca) - and; दमेन (damena) - by self-restraint; च (ca) - and; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - engaged; अपि (api) - even; धर्मनित्यः (dharmanityaḥ) - always devoted to dharma; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; स्वर्गवासम् (svargavāsam) - residence in heaven; आप्स्यसि (āpsyasi) - you will attain;]
(By austerity, by celibacy, by truth, and by self-restraint, even if engaged and always devoted to dharma, you will not attain residence in heaven.)

तौ तु शप्त्वा भृशं क्रुद्धौ परस्परममर्षणौ। प्रतिजग्मतुरन्योन्यं क्रुद्धाविव गजोत्तमौ ॥१२-३०-२७॥
tau tu śaptvā bhṛśaṃ kruddhau parasparam amarṣaṇau। pratijagmatur anyonyaṃ kruddhāv iva gajottamau॥12-30-27॥
[तौ (tau) - those two; तु (tu) - but; शप्त्वा (śaptvā) - having cursed; भृशं (bhṛśam) - intensely; क्रुद्धौ (kruddhau) - angry; परस्परम् (parasparam) - each other; अमर्षणौ (amarṣaṇau) - intolerant; प्रतिजग्मतुः (pratijagmatuh) - approached; अन्योन्यम् (anyonyaṃ) - one another; क्रुद्धौ (kruddhau) - angry; इव (iva) - like; गजोत्तमौ (gajottamau) - best of elephants;]
(Those two but having cursed intensely, angry, intolerant of each other, approached one another, angry like best of elephants.)
But those two, having fiercely cursed each other, both intolerant and enraged, approached one another like two mighty elephants in anger.
पर्वतः पृथिवीं कृत्स्नां विचचार महामुनिः। पूज्यमानो यथान्यायं तेजसा स्वेन भारत ॥१२-३०-२८॥
parvataḥ pṛthivīṃ kṛtsnāṃ vicacāra mahāmuniḥ। pūjyamāno yathānyāyaṃ tejasā svena bhārata ॥12-30-28॥
[पर्वतः (parvataḥ) - mountain; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - earth (accusative); कृत्स्नां (kṛtsnāṃ) - entire; विचचार (vicacāra) - wandered; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage; पूज्यमानः (pūjyamānaḥ) - being honored; यथान्यायं (yathānyāyaṃ) - according to propriety; तेजसा (tejasā) - by (his) splendor; स्वेन (svena) - his own; भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata;]
(The mountain, the entire earth, wandered, the great sage; being honored, according to propriety, by his own splendor, O Bhārata.)
O Bhārata, the great sage, being honored everywhere, wandered the entire earth like a mountain, according to propriety, by his own splendor.
अथ तामलभत्कन्यां नारदः सृञ्जयात्मजाम्। धर्मेण धर्मप्रवरः सुकुमारीमनिन्दिताम् ॥१२-३०-२९॥
atha tāmalabhatkanyāṃ nāradaḥ sṛñjayātmajām। dharmeṇa dharmapravaraḥ sukumārīmaninditām ॥12-30-29॥
[अथ (atha) - then; ताम् (tām) - her; अलभत् (alabhat) - obtained; कन्यां (kanyāṃ) - maiden; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; सृञ्जयात्मजाम् (sṛñjayātmajām) - daughter of Sṛñjaya; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; धर्मप्रवरः (dharmapravaraḥ) - the foremost in righteousness; सुकुमारीम् (sukumārīm) - delicate maiden; अनिन्दिताम् (aninditām) - blameless;]
(Then Nārada, the foremost in righteousness, obtained her, the daughter of Sṛñjaya, a delicate and blameless maiden, by righteousness.)
Then Nārada, the most virtuous, righteously obtained the delicate and blameless maiden, the daughter of Sṛñjaya.
सा तु कन्या यथाशापं नारदं तं ददर्श ह। पाणिग्रहणमन्त्राणां प्रयोगादेव वानरम् ॥१२-३०-३०॥
sā tu kanyā yathā-śāpaṃ nāradaṃ taṃ dadarśa ha। pāṇigrahaṇa-mantrāṇāṃ prayogād eva vānarām ॥12-30-30॥
[सा (sā) - she; तु (tu) - but; कन्या (kanyā) - maiden; यथा (yathā) - as; शापं (śāpaṃ) - curse; नारदं (nāradaṃ) - Nārada; तं (taṃ) - him; ददर्श (dadarśa) - saw; ह (ha) - indeed; पाणिग्रहणमन्त्राणां (pāṇigrahaṇa-mantrāṇāṃ) - of the marriage mantras; प्रयोगात् (prayogāt) - from the application; एव (eva) - indeed; वानरम् (vānarām) - monkey;]
(She but the maiden as (per) curse Nārada him saw indeed. From the application of the marriage mantras indeed (he became) a monkey.)
But that maiden, as per the curse, saw Nārada as a monkey, indeed, due to the application of the marriage mantras.
सुकुमारी च देवर्षिं वानरप्रतिमाननम्। नैवावमन्यत तदा प्रीतिमत्येव चाभवत् ॥१२-३०-३१॥
sukumārī ca devarṣiṃ vānarapratimānanam। naivāvamanyata tadā prītimatyeva cābhavat ॥12-30-31॥
[सुकुमारी (sukumārī) - delicate maiden; च (ca) - and; देवर्षिं (devarṣiṃ) - divine sage; वानरप्रतिमाननम् (vānarapratimānanam) - monkey-like appearance; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; अवमन्यत (avamanyata) - despised; तदा (tadā) - then; प्रीतिमति (prītimati) - full of affection; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(The delicate maiden and the divine sage with monkey-like appearance, did not indeed despise then; full of affection indeed and became.)
The delicate maiden did not despise the divine sage with the monkey-like appearance at that time; rather, she became full of affection.
उपतस्थे च भर्तारं न चान्यं मनसाप्यगात्। देवं मुनिं वा यक्षं वा पतित्वे पतिवत्सला ॥१२-३०-३२॥
upatasthe ca bhartāraṃ na cānyaṃ manasāpyagāt। devaṃ muniṃ vā yakṣaṃ vā patitve pativatsalā ॥12-30-32॥

(She attended to her husband and did not go, even in mind, to another—whether god, sage, or yakṣa—in husbandhood, devoted to her husband.)
She served her husband faithfully and, even in thought, did not consider any other—be it god, sage, or yakṣa—as her husband, being devoted to her husband.
ततः कदाचिद्भगवान्पर्वतोऽनुससार ह। वनं विरहितं किञ्चित्तत्रापश्यत्स नारदम् ॥१२-३०-३३॥
tataḥ kadācid bhagavān parvato'nusasāra ha। vanaṃ virahitaṃ kiñcit tatrāpaśyat sa nāradam ॥12-30-33॥

(Then at some time the venerable Parvata indeed followed. In the forest, somewhat devoid, there he saw Nārada.)

(Then, having saluted, Parvata spoke to Nārada: "You, O lord, may grant favor for me for the command of heaven.")
Then, after offering his salutations, Parvata said to Nārada: "O lord, please bestow your favor upon me so that I may receive the command of heaven."
तमुवाच ततो दृष्ट्वा पर्वतं नारदस्तदा। कृताञ्जलिमुपासीनं दीनं दीनतरः स्वयम् ॥१२-३०-३५॥
tamuvāca tato dṛṣṭvā parvataṃ nāradastadā। kṛtāñjalimupāsīnaṃ dīnaṃ dīnataraḥ svayam ॥12-30-35॥

(Nārada then, having seen Parvata at that time, with joined palms, seated, dejected, himself even more dejected, said to him.)
Seeing Parvata sitting with joined palms, looking dejected, Nārada, who himself was even more dejected, spoke to him.
त्वयाहं प्रथमं शप्तो वानरस्त्वं भविष्यसि। इत्युक्तेन मया पश्चाच्छप्तस्त्वमपि मत्सरात् ॥ अद्यप्रभृति वै वासं स्वर्गे नावाप्स्यसीति ह ॥१२-३०-३६॥
tvayāhaṃ prathamaṃ śapto vānarastvaṃ bhaviṣyasi। ityuktena mayā paścācchaptastvamapi matsarāt ॥ adyaprabhr̥ti vai vāsaṃ svarge nāvāpsyasīti ha ॥12-30-36॥
[त्वया (tvayā) - by you; अहम् (aham) - I; प्रथमम् (prathamam) - first; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; वानरः (vānaraḥ) - monkey; त्वम् (tvam) - you; भविष्यसि (bhaviṣyasi) - will become; इति (iti) - thus; उक्तेन (uktena) - having been said; मया (mayā) - by me; पश्चात् (paścāt) - afterwards; शप्तः (śaptaḥ) - cursed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; मत्सरात् (matsarāt) - from envy; अद्यप्रभृति (adyaprabhr̥ti) - from today onwards; वै (vai) - indeed; वासम् (vāsaṃ) - residence; स्वर्गे (svarge) - in heaven; न (na) - not; अवाप्स्यसि (avāpsyasi) - you will obtain; इति (iti) - thus; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(By you I was first cursed, (that) you will become a monkey. Thus, having been said by me, afterwards you also were cursed from envy: 'From today onwards, indeed, residence in heaven you will not obtain,' thus indeed.)
You first cursed me, saying, 'You will become a monkey.' In response, out of envy, I also cursed you: 'From today onwards, you will not obtain residence in heaven.'
तव नैतद्धि सदृशं पुत्रस्थाने हि मे भवान्। निवर्तयेतां तौ शापमन्योऽन्येन तदा मुनी ॥१२-३०-३७॥
tava na etad dhi sadṛśaṃ putrasthāne hi me bhavān। nivartayetāṃ tau śāpam anyo'nyena tadā munī ॥12-30-37॥
[तव (tava) - of you; न (na) - not; एतत् (etat) - this; हि (hi) - indeed; सदृशम् (sadṛśam) - befitting; पुत्रस्थाने (putrasthāne) - in the place of a son; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; भवान् (bhavān) - you (honorific); निवर्तयेताम् (nivartayetām) - should cause to be withdrawn (dual); तौ (tau) - those two; शापम् (śāpam) - curse; अन्यः (anyaḥ) - one (the other); अन्येन (anyena) - by the other; तदा (tadā) - then; मुनी (munī) - O sage;]
(Of you, this indeed is not befitting; in the place of a son, indeed, to me, you (are). Those two should cause the curse to be withdrawn by one by the other then, O sage.)
This is not befitting of you; you are like a son to me. Let those two withdraw the curse from each other then, O sage.
श्रीसमृद्धं तदा दृष्ट्वा नारदं देवरूपिणम्। सुकुमारी प्रदुद्राव परपत्यभिशङ्कया ॥१२-३०-३८॥
śrīsamṛddhaṃ tadā dṛṣṭvā nāradaṃ devarūpiṇam। sukumārī pradudrāva parapatyabhiśaṅkayā ॥12-30-38॥
[श्रीसमृद्धम् (śrīsamṛddham) - prosperous; endowed with fortune; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; नारदम् (nāradam) - Nārada; देवरूपिणम् (devarūpiṇam) - having the form of a deva; divine in appearance; सुकुमारी (sukumārī) - the delicate girl; प्रदुद्राव (pradudrāva) - ran away; fled; परपत्यभिशङ्कया (parapatyabhiśaṅkayā) - with suspicion of another's husband; fearing another's husband;]
(Having seen the prosperous (one), then Nārada, divine in form, the delicate girl fled, with suspicion of another's husband.)
When the delicate girl saw the prosperous Nārada, who appeared divine, she fled, fearing he was another's husband.
तां पर्वतस्ततो दृष्ट्वा प्रद्रवन्तीमनिन्दिताम्। अब्रवीत्तव भर्तैष नात्र कार्या विचारणा ॥१२-३०-३९॥
tāṃ parvatas tato dṛṣṭvā pradravantīm aninditām। abravīt tava bharta eṣa nātra kāryā vicāraṇā ॥12-30-39॥
[ताम् (tām) - her; पर्वतः (parvataḥ) - the mountain; ततः (tataḥ) - then; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; प्रद्रवन्तीम् (pradravantīm) - running away; अनिन्दिताम् (aninditām) - blameless; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; तव (tava) - your; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; कार्या (kāryā) - should be done; विचारणा (vicāraṇā) - deliberation;]
(Her, the mountain then having seen running away, blameless, said: "This is your husband; here, no deliberation should be done.")
The mountain, seeing the blameless woman running away, said: "This is your husband; there is no need for deliberation here."
ऋषिः परमधर्मात्मा नारदो भगवान्प्रभुः। तवैवाभेद्यहृदयो मा ते भूदत्र संशयः ॥१२-३०-४०॥
ṛṣiḥ paramadharmātmā nārado bhagavānprabhuḥ। tavaivābhedyahṛdayo mā te bhūdatra saṃśayaḥ ॥12-30-40॥
[ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - seer; परमधर्मात्मा (paramadharmātmā) - one whose essence is supreme dharma; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord; तव (tava) - your; एव (eva) - indeed; अभेद्य (abhedya) - impenetrable; हृदयः (hṛdayaḥ) - heart; मा (mā) - do not; ते (te) - to you; भूत् (bhūt) - let there be; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(The seer whose essence is supreme dharma, Nārada, the revered lord; your heart is indeed impenetrable; let there not be doubt here for you.)
The sage Nārada, whose nature is of supreme righteousness, the revered lord, said: "Your heart is truly impenetrable; let there be no doubt about this for you."
सानुनीता बहुविधं पर्वतेन महात्मना। शापदोषं च तं भर्तुः श्रुत्वा स्वां प्रकृतिं गता ॥ पर्वतोऽथ ययौ स्वर्गं नारदोऽथ ययौ गृहान् ॥१२-३०-४१॥
sānunītā bahuvidhaṃ parvatena mahātmanā। śāpadoṣaṃ ca taṃ bhartuḥ śrutvā svāṃ prakṛtiṃ gatā ॥ parvato'tha yayau svargaṃ nārado'tha yayau gṛhān ॥12-30-41॥

(Led along the peak of many kinds by the great-souled mountain, and having heard that curse-defect of her husband, she went to her own nature. The mountain then went to heaven, Nārada then went to the houses.)

प्रत्यक्षकर्मा सर्वस्य नारदोऽयं महानृषिः। एष वक्ष्यति वै पृष्टो यथा वृत्तं नरोत्तम ॥१२-३०-४२॥
pratyakṣakarmā sarvasya nārado'yaṃ mahānṛṣiḥ। eṣa vakṣyati vai pṛṣṭo yathā vṛttaṃ narottama ॥12-30-42॥
[प्रत्यक्षकर्मा (pratyakṣakarmā) - one whose actions are evident; सर्वस्य (sarvasya) - of all; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; अयम् (ayam) - this; महान् (mahān) - great; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; एषः (eṣaḥ) - he; वक्ष्यति (vakṣyati) - will speak; वै (vai) - indeed; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - when asked; यथा (yathā) - as; वृत्तम् (vṛttam) - happened; नरोत्तम (narottama) - O best of men;]
(One whose actions are evident, of all, Nārada, this great sage, he will speak indeed when asked, as happened, O best of men.)
O best of men, this great sage Nārada, whose actions are evident to all, will indeed tell (you) what happened when asked.
