Pancharatra: Understanding Bhishma is meditating on him, Lord Krishna readies to visit him, also asks Yudhisthira to ask the most knowledgeable Bhishma about the duties pertaining to the four Vedas, the four officiating priests, the four stages of life, and the four social classes.
युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥

किमिदं परमाश्चर्यं ध्यायस्यमितविक्रम। कच्चिल्लोकत्रयस्यास्य स्वस्ति लोकपरायण ॥१२-४६-१॥
kimidaṃ paramāścaryaṃ dhyāyasyamitavikrama। kaccillokatrayasyāsya svasti lokaparāyaṇa ॥12-46-1॥
[किम् (kim) - what; इदं (idaṃ) - this; परम (parama) - supreme; आश्चर्यं (āścaryaṃ) - wonder; ध्यायस्य (dhyāyasya) - you are contemplating; अमित (amita) - immeasurable; विक्रम (vikrama) - valor; कच्चित् (kaccit) - whether; लोकत्रयस्य (lokatrayasya) - of the three worlds; अस्य (asya) - of this; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; लोक (loka) - world; परायण (parāyaṇa) - refuge;]
(What is this supreme wonder you are contemplating, O one of immeasurable valor? Is there well-being for these three worlds, O refuge of the worlds?)
What is this supreme wonder you are contemplating, O hero of immeasurable valor? Is everything well with these three worlds, O protector of all?
चतुर्थं ध्यानमार्गं त्वमालम्ब्य पुरुषोत्तम। अपक्रान्तो यतो देव तेन मे विस्मितं मनः ॥१२-४६-२॥
caturthaṃ dhyānamārgaṃ tvamālambya puruṣottama। apakrānto yato deva tena me vismitaṃ manaḥ ॥12-46-2॥
[चतुर्थम् (caturtham) - fourth; ध्यानमार्गम् (dhyānamārgam) - meditation-path; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आलम्ब्य (ālambya) - having resorted to; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣottama) - O Supreme Person; अपक्रान्तः (apakrāntaḥ) - departed; यतः (yataḥ) - because; देव (deva) - O Lord; तेन (tena) - by that; मे (me) - my; विस्मितम् (vismitam) - astonished; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(O Supreme Person, having resorted to the fourth meditation-path, because you departed, O Lord, by that my mind is astonished.)
O Supreme Person, when you resorted to the fourth path of meditation and departed, O Lord, my mind was astonished by that.
निगृहीतो हि वायुस्ते पञ्चकर्मा शरीरगः। इन्द्रियाणि च सर्वाणि मनसि स्थापितानि ते ॥१२-४६-३॥
nigṛhīto hi vāyus te pañcakarmā śarīragaḥ। indriyāṇi ca sarvāṇi manasi sthāpitāni te ॥12-46-3॥
[निगृहीतः (nigṛhītaḥ) - restrained; हि (hi) - indeed; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - breath; ते (te) - your; पञ्चकर्मा (pañcakarmā) - having five functions; शरीरगः (śarīragaḥ) - moving in the body; इन्द्रियाणि (indriyāṇi) - senses; च (ca) - and; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; मनसि (manasi) - in the mind; स्थापितानि (sthāpitāni) - placed; ते (te) - your;]
(Restrained indeed is your breath, having five functions, moving in the body; and all your senses are placed in the mind.)
Your breath, which performs five functions and moves within the body, is indeed restrained; and all your senses have been placed in your mind.
इन्द्रियाणि मनश्चैव बुद्धौ संवेशितानि ते। सर्वश्चैव गणो देव क्षेत्रज्ञे ते निवेशितः ॥१२-४६-४॥
indriyāṇi manaścaiva buddhau saṃveśitāni te। sarvaścaiva gaṇo deva kṣetrajñe te niveśitaḥ ॥12-46-4॥

(The senses, and the mind indeed, are entered into your intellect; and indeed, O divine one, all the group is placed in your knower of the field.)
O divine one, all your senses, mind, and intellect are established in your knower of the field.
नेङ्गन्ति तव रोमाणि स्थिरा बुद्धिस्तथा मनः। स्थाणुकुड्यशिलाभूतो निरीहश्चासि माधव ॥१२-४६-५॥
neṅganti tava romāṇi sthirā buddhis tathā manaḥ। sthāṇukuḍyaśilābhūto nirīhaś cāsi mādhava ॥12-46-5॥
[नेङ्गन्ति (neṅganti) - do not move; तव (tava) - your; रोमाणि (romāṇi) - hairs; स्थिरा (sthirā) - steady; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; तथा (tathā) - likewise; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; स्थाणु (sthāṇu) - like a pillar; कुड्य (kuḍya) - wall; शिला (śilā) - stone; भूतः (bhūtaḥ) - become; निरीहः (nirīhaḥ) - inactive; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; माधव (mādhava) - O Mādhava;]
(Your hairs do not move; your intellect and mind are steady likewise; you have become like a pillar, wall, and stone, inactive, and you are, O Mādhava.)
O Mādhava, your hairs do not stand on end, your intellect and mind remain steady; you have become like a pillar, a wall, or a stone, and are without initiative.
यथा दीपो निवातस्थो निरिङ्गो ज्वलतेऽच्युत। तथासि भगवन्देव निश्चलो दृढनिश्चयः ॥१२-४६-६॥
yathā dīpo nivātastho niriṅgo jvalate'cyuta। tathāsi bhagavandeva niścalo dṛḍhaniścayaḥ ॥12-46-6॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; दीपः (dīpaḥ) - lamp; निवातस्थः (nivātasthaḥ) - placed in windless place; निरिङ्गः (niriṅgaḥ) - without flickering; ज्वलते (jvalate) - burns; अच्युत (acyuta) - O Acyuta; तथा (tathā) - so; असि (asi) - you are; भगवन् (bhagavan) - O Lord; देव (deva) - O God; निश्चलः (niścalaḥ) - unmoving; दृढनिश्चयः (dṛḍhaniścayaḥ) - firm in resolve;]
(Just as a lamp placed in a windless place, without flickering, burns, O Acyuta, so are you, O Lord, O God, unmoving, firm in resolve.)
Just as a lamp burns steadily in a windless place without flickering, O Acyuta, so you, O Lord, O God, are unwavering and firm in your resolve.
यदि श्रोतुमिहार्हामि न रहस्यं च ते यदि। छिन्धि मे संशयं देव प्रपन्नायाभियाचते ॥१२-४६-७॥
yadi śrotum ihārhāmi na rahasyaṃ ca te yadi। chindhi me saṃśayaṃ deva prapannāyābhiyācate ॥12-46-7॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; श्रोतुम् (śrotum) - to hear; इह (iha) - here; अर्हामि (arhāmi) - I am worthy; न (na) - not; रहस्यं (rahasyaṃ) - secret; च (ca) - and; ते (te) - your; यदि (yadi) - if; छिन्धि (chindhi) - cut; मे (me) - my; संशयं (saṃśayaṃ) - doubt; देव (deva) - O divine one; प्रपन्नाय (prapannāya) - to one who has taken refuge; अभियाचते (abhiyācate) - who is earnestly requesting;]
(If I am worthy to hear here, and if your secret is not (to be withheld), cut my doubt, O divine one, for one who has taken refuge and is earnestly requesting.)
If I am worthy to hear it here, and if your secret is not to be withheld, O divine one, dispel my doubt for I am one who has taken refuge and am earnestly requesting.
त्वं हि कर्ता विकर्ता च त्वं क्षरं चाक्षरं च हि। अनादिनिधनश्चाद्यस्त्वमेव पुरुषोत्तम ॥१२-४६-८॥
tvaṃ hi kartā vikartā ca tvaṃ kṣaraṃ cākṣaraṃ ca hi। anādinidhanaścādyastvameva puruṣottama ॥12-46-8॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; कर्ता (kartā) - creator; विकर्ता (vikartā) - transformer; च (ca) - and; त्वम् (tvam) - you; क्षरम् (kṣaram) - perishable; च (ca) - and; अक्षरम् (akṣaram) - imperishable; च (ca) - and; हि (hi) - indeed; अनादिनिधनः (anādinidhanaḥ) - without beginning or end; च (ca) - and; आद्यः (ādyaḥ) - the primal one; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - alone; पुरुषोत्तम (puruṣottama) - supreme person;]
(You indeed are the creator, the transformer, and you are the perishable and the imperishable indeed. Without beginning or end and the primal one, you alone are the supreme person.)
You are truly the creator and transformer; you are both the perishable and the imperishable. You are without beginning or end, the primal one; you alone are the Supreme Person.
त्वत्प्रपन्नाय भक्ताय शिरसा प्रणताय च। ध्यानस्यास्य यथातत्त्वं ब्रूहि धर्मभृतां वर ॥१२-४६-९॥
tvat-prapannāya bhaktāya śirasā praṇatāya ca। dhyānasya asya yathā-tattvaṃ brūhi dharma-bhṛtām vara ॥12-46-9॥
[त्वत् (tvat) - from you; प्रपन्नाय (prapannāya) - to one who has surrendered; भक्ताय (bhaktāya) - to the devoted; शिरसा (śirasā) - with the head; प्रणताय (praṇatāya) - to one who has bowed; च (ca) - and; ध्यानस्य (dhyānasya) - of meditation; अस्य (asya) - of this; यथा (yathā) - as; तत्त्वम् (tattvam) - the true nature; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; धर्मभृताम् (dharma-bhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वर (vara) - O best; ॥१२-४६-९॥ (॥12-46-9॥) - ॥12-46-9॥;]
(To one who has surrendered to you, to the devoted, to one who has bowed with the head, and (O best of the upholders of dharma), tell the true nature of this meditation as it is.)
O best of the upholders of dharma, to one who has surrendered to you, who is devoted and has bowed his head, please explain the true nature of this meditation as it truly is.
वैशम्पायन उवाच॥
vaiśampāyana uvāca॥

Vaiśampāyana said:
ततः स्वगोचरे न्यस्य मनो बुद्धीन्द्रियाणि च। स्मितपूर्वमुवाचेदं भगवान्वासवानुजः ॥१२-४६-१०॥
tataḥ svagocare nyasya mano buddhīndriyāṇi ca। smitapūrvam uvācedaṃ bhagavān vāsavānujaḥ ॥12-46-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; स्वगोचरे (svagocare) - in his own sphere; न्यस्य (nyasya) - having placed; मन् (manas) - mind; बुद्धि (buddhi) - intellect; इन्द्रियाणि (indriyāṇi) - senses; च (ca) - and; स्मितपूर्वम् (smitapūrvam) - with a smile beforehand; उवाच (uvāca) - said; इदं (idaṃ) - this; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; वासवानुजः (vāsavānujaḥ) - the younger brother of Vāsava (Indra);]
(Then, having placed mind, intellect, and senses in his own sphere, with a smile beforehand, the revered one, the younger brother of Vāsava, said this.)
Then, the revered younger brother of Vāsava (Indra), having composed his mind, intellect, and senses in his own domain, spoke these words with a gentle smile.
शरतल्पगतो भीष्मः शाम्यन्निव हुताशनः। मां ध्याति पुरुषव्याघ्रस्ततो मे तद्गतं मनः ॥१२-४६-११॥
śaratalpagato bhīṣmaḥ śāmyanniva hutāśanaḥ। māṃ dhyāti puruṣavyāghrastato me tadgataṃ manaḥ ॥12-46-11॥
[शरतल्पगतः (śaratalpagataḥ) - gone to a bed of arrows; भीष्मः (bhīṣmaḥ) - Bhishma; शाम्यन् (śāmyan) - calming; इव (iva) - as if; हुताशनः (hutāśanaḥ) - fire; माम् (mām) - me; ध्याति (dhyāti) - meditates; पुरुषव्याघ्रः (puruṣavyāghraḥ) - tiger among men; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; मे (me) - my; तत् (tat) - that; गतं (gataṃ) - gone; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(Bhishma, gone to a bed of arrows, calming as if fire, meditates on me, O tiger among men; therefore, my mind has gone to him.)
Bhishma, lying on his bed of arrows and calming like a dying fire, is meditating on me, O tiger among men; therefore, my mind is with him.
यस्य ज्यातलनिर्घोषं विस्फूर्जितमिवाशनेः। न सहेद्देवराजोऽपि तमस्मि मनसा गतः ॥१२-४६-१२॥
yasya jyātalanirghoṣaṃ visphūrjitam ivāśaneḥ। na saheddēvarājo'pi tam asmi manasā gataḥ॥12-46-12॥
[यस्य (yasya) - of whom; ज्यातलनिर्घोषं (jyātala-nirghoṣam) - the twang of the bowstring; विस्फूर्जितम् (visphūrjitam) - the thunderous sound; इव (iva) - like; आशनेः (āśaneḥ) - of the thunderbolt; न (na) - not; सहेत् (sahet) - could withstand; देवराजः (devarājaḥ) - the king of the gods; अपि (api) - even; तम् (tam) - him; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; मनसा (manasā) - in mind; गतः (gataḥ) - gone;]
(Of whom the twang of the bowstring is like the thunderous sound of the thunderbolt; not even the king of the gods could withstand him; I am gone to him in mind.)
The one whose bowstring's twang resounds like the thunderbolt's roar—even the king of the gods could not withstand him; my mind has already gone to him.
येनाभिद्रुत्य तरसा समस्तं राजमण्डलम्। ऊढास्तिस्रः पुरा कन्यास्तमस्मि मनसा गतः ॥१२-४६-१३॥
yenābhidrutya tarasā samastaṃ rājamaṇḍalam। ūḍhāstisraḥ purā kanyāstamasmi manasā gataḥ ॥12-46-13॥
[येन (yena) - by whom; अभिद्रुत्य (abhidrutya) - having rushed at; तरसा (tarasā) - with speed; समस्तं (samastam) - entire; राजमण्डलम् (rājamaṇḍalam) - royal circle; ऊढाः (ūḍhāḥ) - carried away; तिस्रः (tisraḥ) - three (feminine); पुरा (purā) - formerly; कन्याः (kanyāḥ) - maidens; तम् (tam) - him; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; मनसा (manasā) - in mind; गतः (gataḥ) - gone;]
(By whom, having rushed at with speed, the entire royal circle (was overcome); three maidens were formerly carried away; to him I am gone in mind.)
He, by whom the entire royal circle was swiftly overcome and who once carried away three maidens, to him my mind has gone.
त्रयोविंशतिरात्रं यो योधयामास भार्गवम्। न च रामेण निस्तीर्णस्तमस्मि मनसा गतः ॥१२-४६-१४॥
trayoviṃśatirātraṃ yo yodhayāmāsa bhārgavam। na ca rāmeṇa nistīrṇastamasmi manasā gataḥ ॥12-46-14॥
[त्रयोविंशति-रात्रम् (trayoviṃśati-rātram) - twenty-three nights; यः (yaḥ) - who; योधयामास (yodhayāmāsa) - fought; भार्गवम् (bhārgavam) - Bhārgava (Paraśurāma); न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; रामेण (rāmeṇa) - by Rāma; निस्तीर्णः (nistīrṇaḥ) - overcome; तम् (tam) - him; अस्मि (asmi) - am; मनसा (manasā) - in mind; गतः (gataḥ) - gone;]
(Who fought Bhārgava for twenty-three nights, and I am not one who has overcome him by Rāma, I have gone in mind.)
I fought Bhārgava (Paraśurāma) for twenty-three nights, but I have not overcome him by Rāma; in my mind, I have departed from that.
यं गङ्गा गर्भविधिना धारयामास पार्थिवम्। वसिष्ठशिष्यं तं तात मनसास्मि गतो नृप ॥१२-४६-१५॥
yaṃ gaṅgā garbhavidhinā dhārayāmāsa pārthivam। vasiṣṭhaśiṣyaṃ taṃ tāta manasāsmi gato nṛpa ॥12-46-15॥
[यं (yaṃ) - whom; गङ्गा (gaṅgā) - Gaṅgā; गर्भविधिना (garbhavidhinā) - by the process of conception; धारयामास (dhārayāmāsa) - bore; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - the king; वसिष्ठशिष्यं (vasiṣṭhaśiṣyam) - disciple of Vasiṣṭha; तं (taṃ) - him; तात (tāta) - O father; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; गतः (gataḥ) - gone; नृप (nṛpa) - O king;]
(Whom Gaṅgā by the process of conception bore, the king, disciple of Vasiṣṭha, him, O father, with the mind I am gone, O king.)
O father, my mind has gone to him whom Gaṅgā bore by the process of conception, the king, the disciple of Vasiṣṭha, O king.
दिव्यास्त्राणि महातेजा यो धारयति बुद्धिमान्। साङ्गांश्च चतुरो वेदांस्तमस्मि मनसा गतः ॥१२-४६-१६॥
divyāstrāṇi mahātejā yo dhārayati buddhimān। sāṅgāṃśca caturo vedāṃstamasmi manasā gataḥ ॥12-46-16॥
[दिव्य-अस्त्राणि (divya-astrāṇi) - divine weapons; महातेजा (mahātejā) - of great brilliance; यः (yaḥ) - who; धारयति (dhārayati) - bears; बुद्धिमान् (buddhimān) - intelligent; साङ्गान् (sāṅgān) - with limbs (auxiliaries); च (ca) - and; चतुरः (caturaḥ) - four; वेदान् (vedān) - Vedas; तम् (tam) - him; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; गतः (gataḥ) - gone;]
(The intelligent one who bears divine weapons, of great brilliance, and the four Vedas with their auxiliaries—him I have reached with my mind.)
I have mentally approached the wise one who possesses divine weapons of great brilliance and who has mastered the four Vedas along with their auxiliaries.
रामस्य दयितं शिष्यं जामदग्न्यस्य पाण्डव। आधारं सर्वविद्यानां तमस्मि मनसा गतः ॥१२-४६-१७॥
rāmasya dayitaṃ śiṣyaṃ jāmadagnyasya pāṇḍava। ādhāraṃ sarvavidyānāṃ tamasmi manasā gataḥ ॥12-46-17॥
[रामस्य (rāmasya) - of Rāma; दयितं (dayitaṃ) - beloved; शिष्यं (śiṣyaṃ) - disciple; जामदग्न्यस्य (jāmadagnyasya) - of Jāmadagnya; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; आधारं (ādhāraṃ) - support; सर्वविद्यानां (sarvavidyānāṃ) - of all knowledges; तम् (tam) - him; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; गतः (gataḥ) - gone;]
(Of Rāma, the beloved disciple of Jāmadagnya, O Pāṇḍava, the support of all knowledges, him I am gone to with the mind.)
O Pāṇḍava, I have mentally reached him who is the beloved disciple of Rāma, of Jāmadagnya, and the support of all knowledge.
एकीकृत्येन्द्रियग्रामं मनः संयम्य मेधया। शरणं मामुपागच्छत्ततो मे तद्गतं मनः ॥१२-४६-१८॥
ekīkṛtyendriyagrāmaṃ manaḥ saṃyamya medhayā। śaraṇaṃ māmupāgacchattato me tadgataṃ manaḥ ॥12-46-18॥
[एकीकृत्य (ekīkṛtya) - having united; इन्द्रियग्रामं (indriyagrāmam) - the group of senses; मनः (manaḥ) - mind; संयम्य (saṃyamya) - having restrained; मेधया (medhayā) - by intelligence; शरणं (śaraṇam) - refuge; माम् (mām) - me; उपागच्छत् (upāgacchat) - approached; ततः (tataḥ) - then; मे (me) - my; तद्गतं (tadgatam) - absorbed in that; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(Having united the group of senses and the mind, having restrained (them) by intelligence, (he) approached me as refuge; then my mind was absorbed in that.)
Having controlled his senses and mind by intelligence, he sought refuge in me; then my mind became absorbed in him.
स हि भूतं च भव्यं च भवच्च पुरुषर्षभ। वेत्ति धर्मभृतां श्रेष्ठस्ततो मे तद्गतं मनः ॥१२-४६-१९॥
sa hi bhūtaṃ ca bhavyaṃ ca bhavacca puruṣarṣabha। vetti dharmabhṛtāṃ śreṣṭhastato me tadgataṃ manaḥ ॥12-46-19॥
[स (sa) - he; हि (hi) - indeed; भूतं (bhūtaṃ) - past; च (ca) - and; भव्यं (bhavyaṃ) - future; च (ca) - and; भवत् (bhavat) - present; च (ca) - and; पुरुषर्षभ (puruṣarṣabha) - bull among men; वेत्ति (vetti) - knows; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtāṃ) - of the upholders of dharma; श्रेष्ठः (śreṣṭhaḥ) - the best; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; मे (me) - my; तत् (tat) - to him; गतं (gataṃ) - gone; मनः (manaḥ) - mind;]
(He indeed past and future and present and bull among men knows, of the upholders of dharma the best; therefore my to him gone mind.)
He, O bull among men, indeed knows the past, the future, and the present, being the best among the upholders of dharma; therefore, my mind has gone to him.
तस्मिन्हि पुरुषव्याघ्रे कर्मभिः स्वैर्दिवं गते। भविष्यति मही पार्थ नष्टचन्द्रेव शर्वरी ॥१२-४६-२०॥
tasmin hi puruṣavyāghre karmabhiḥ svair divaṃ gate। bhaviṣyati mahī pārtha naṣṭacandreva śarvarī ॥12-46-20॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; हि (hi) - indeed; पुरुषव्याघ्रे (puruṣavyāghre) - O tiger among men; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; स्वैः (svaiḥ) - by his own; दिवं (divaṃ) - to heaven; गते (gate) - having gone; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; मही (mahī) - the earth; पार्थ (pārtha) - O Pārtha; नष्टचन्द्रा (naṣṭacandrā) - with the moon lost; इव (iva) - like; शर्वरी (śarvarī) - the night;]
(In that (time), indeed, O tiger among men, when he has gone to heaven by his own actions, O Pārtha, the earth will become like the night with the moon lost.)
O Pārtha, when that tiger among men has gone to heaven by his own actions, the earth will become like a night bereft of the moon.
तद्युधिष्ठिर गाङ्गेयं भीष्मं भीमपराक्रमम्। अभिगम्योपसङ्गृह्य पृच्छ यत्ते मनोगतम् ॥१२-४६-२१॥
tadyudhiṣṭhira gāṅgeyaṃ bhīṣmaṃ bhīmaparākramam। abhigamyopasaṅgṛhya pṛccha yatte manogatam ॥12-46-21॥

(That, O Yudhiṣṭhira, having approached and having saluted Bhishma, son of Ganga, of mighty prowess, ask what is in your mind.)
O Yudhiṣṭhira, approach and salute Bhishma, the son of Ganga and of mighty prowess, and ask him whatever is in your mind.
चातुर्वेद्यं चातुर्होत्रं चातुराश्रम्यमेव च। चातुर्वर्ण्यस्य धर्मं च पृच्छैनं पृथिवीपते ॥१२-४६-२२॥
cāturvedyaṃ cāturhotraṃ cāturāśramyameva ca। cāturvarṇyasya dharmaṃ ca pṛcchainaṃ pṛthivīpate ॥12-46-22॥

(Ask him about the duties relating to the four Vedas, the four hotṛ priests, the four āśramas, and the four varṇas, O lord of the earth.)
O king, ask him about the duties pertaining to the four Vedas, the four officiating priests, the four stages of life, and the four social classes.
तस्मिन्नस्तमिते भीष्मे कौरवाणां धुरन्धरे। ज्ञानान्यल्पीभविष्यन्ति तस्मात्त्वां चोदयाम्यहम् ॥१२-४६-२३॥
tasminnastamite bhīṣme kauravāṇāṃ dhurandhare। jñānānyalpībhaviṣyanti tasmāttvāṃ codayāmyaham ॥12-46-23॥

(In him having set, Bhishma, the chief supporter of the Kauravas, the knowledges will become little; therefore, you I urge.)
When Bhishma, the chief pillar of the Kauravas, has departed, wisdom will diminish; therefore, I urge you.
तच्छ्रुत्वा वासुदेवस्य तथ्यं वचनमुत्तमम्। साश्रुकण्ठः स धर्मज्ञो जनार्दनमुवाच ह ॥१२-४६-२४॥
tacchrutvā vāsudevasya tathyaṃ vacanamuttamam। sāśrukaṇṭhaḥ sa dharmajño janārdanamuvāca ha ॥12-46-24॥

(Having heard that true and excellent speech of Vāsudeva, he, with a throat choked with tears, that knower of dharma, indeed said to Janārdana.)
When he heard that true and excellent speech of Vāsudeva, the dharma-knowing one, his throat choked with tears, spoke to Janārdana.
यद्भवानाह भीष्मस्य प्रभावं प्रति माधव। तथा तन्नात्र संदेहो विद्यते मम मानद ॥१२-४६-२५॥
yad bhavān āha bhīṣmasya prabhāvaṃ prati mādhava। tathā tan nātra saṃdeho vidyate mama mānada ॥12-46-25॥

(Which you said regarding the power of Bhīṣma, O Mādhava, so that, that here not doubt exists to me, O giver of honor.)
O Mādhava, what you have said about Bhīṣma's power, I have no doubt about that here, O giver of honor.
महाभाग्यं हि भीष्मस्य प्रभावश्च महात्मनः। श्रुतं मया कथयतां ब्राह्मणानां महात्मनाम् ॥१२-४६-२६॥
mahābhāgyaṃ hi bhīṣmasya prabhāvaś ca mahātmanaḥ। śrutaṃ mayā kathayatāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ mahātmanām ॥12-46-26॥

भवांश्च कर्ता लोकानां यद्ब्रवीत्यरिसूदन। तथा तदनभिध्येयं वाक्यं यादवनन्दन ॥१२-४६-२७॥
bhavāṁś ca kartā lokānāṁ yad bravīty arisūdana। tathā tad anabhidhyeyaṁ vākyaṁ yādavanandana ॥12-46-27॥

(Because the intellect made by your favor, O Mādhava, is in me, having placed you in front, we see Bhīṣma.)

(When the divine Sun has returned, he indeed will go to the worlds. Therefore, O mighty-armed, the Kaurava deserves your sight.)

tava hy ādyasya devasya kṣarasyaiva akṣarasya ca। darśanaṃ tasya lābhaḥ syāt tvaṃ hi brahmamayo nidhiḥ॥12-46-30॥
[तव (tava) - of you; हि (hi) - indeed; आद्यस्य (ādyasya) - of the first (primordial); देवस्य (devasya) - of the god; क्षरस्य (kṣarasya) - of the perishable; एव (eva) - indeed; अक्षरस्य (akṣarasya) - of the imperishable; च (ca) - and; दर्शनं (darśanam) - sight; तस्य (tasya) - of him; लाभः (lābhaḥ) - attainment; स्यात् (syāt) - would be; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; ब्रह्ममयः (brahmamayaḥ) - consisting of Brahman; निधिः (nidhiḥ) - treasure;]
(Of you indeed, of the primordial god, of the perishable indeed and of the imperishable and, the sight of him would be attainment; you indeed are the treasure consisting of Brahman.)
Truly, you are the primordial god, both the perishable and the imperishable; to see you is the highest attainment, for you are indeed the treasure composed of Brahman.
श्रुत्वैतद्धर्मराजस्य वचनं मधुसूदनः। पार्श्वस्थं सात्यकिं प्राह रथो मे युज्यतामिति ॥१२-४६-३१॥
śrutvaitaddharmarājasya vacanaṃ madhusūdanaḥ। pārśvasthaṃ sātyakiṃ prāha ratho me yujyatāmiti ॥12-46-31॥

(Having heard this speech of Dharmarāja, Madhusūdana said to Sātyaki, who was standing at the side, "Let my chariot be yoked thus.")
After hearing these words of Dharmarāja, Madhusūdana (Kṛṣṇa) said to Sātyaki, who was standing nearby, "Let my chariot be yoked."
सात्यकिस्तूपनिष्क्रम्य केशवस्य समीपतः। दारुकं प्राह कृष्णस्य युज्यतां रथ इत्युत ॥१२-४६-३२॥
sātyakistūpaniṣkramya keśavasya samīpataḥ। dārukaṃ prāha kṛṣṇasya yujyatāṃ ratha ityuta ॥12-46-32॥

स सात्यकेराशु वचो निशम्य; रथोत्तमं काञ्चनभूषिताङ्गम्। मसारगल्वर्कमयैर्विभङ्गै; र्विभूषितं हेमपिनद्धचक्रम् ॥१२-४६-३३॥
sa sātyakerāśu vaco niśamya; rathottamaṃ kāñcanabhūṣitāṅgam। masāragalvarkamayair vibhaṅgair; vibhūṣitaṃ hemapinaddhacakram ॥12-46-33॥
[स (sa) - he; सात्यकेराशु (sātyakerāśu) - to Sātyaki, quickly; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; निशम्य (niśamya) - having heard; रथोत्तमम् (rathottamam) - the best chariot; काञ्चनभूषिताङ्गम् (kāñcanabhūṣitāṅgam) - with golden-adorned body; मसारगल्वर्कमयैः (masāragalvarkamayaiḥ) - with pearl and coral-made; विभङ्गैः (vibhaṅgaiḥ) - with divisions; विभूषितम् (vibhūṣitam) - adorned; हेमपिनद्धचक्रम् (hemapinaddhacakram) - with wheels bound in gold;]
(He, having quickly heard the words of Sātyaki, (saw) the best chariot with golden-adorned body, adorned with divisions made of pearl and coral, with wheels bound in gold.)

(Having the radiance of the sun's rays, moving swiftly; adorned with various and variegated gems and jewels. Newly risen, like the sun, radiant; bearing a variegated Garuda-banner, bearing a flag.)
It shone with the brilliance of the sun's rays and moved swiftly, adorned with many kinds of variegated gems and jewels. Newly risen and radiant like the sun, it bore a flag with a variegated Garuda emblem.
सुग्रीवसैन्यप्रमुखैर्वराश्वै; र्मनोजवैः काञ्चनभूषिताङ्गैः। सुयुक्तमावेदयदच्युताय; कृताञ्जलिर्दारुको राजसिंह ॥१२-४६-३५॥
sugrīvasainyapramukhair varāśvaiḥ manojavaiḥ kāñcanabhūṣitāṅgaiḥ। suyuktam āvedayad acyutāya kṛtāñjalir dāruko rājasiṃha ॥12-46-35॥
[सुग्रीवसैन्यप्रमुखैः (sugrīvasainyapramukhaiḥ) - by the chiefs of Sugrīva's army; वराश्वैः (varāśvaiḥ) - by excellent horses; मनोजवैः (manojavaiḥ) - by those swift as the mind; काञ्चनभूषिताङ्गैः (kāñcanabhūṣitāṅgaiḥ) - with golden-adorned bodies; सयुक्तम् (suyuktam) - well-yoked; आवेदयत् (āvedayat) - he reported; अच्युताय (acyutāya) - to Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa); कृताञ्जलिः (kṛtāñjaliḥ) - with joined palms; दारुकः (dārukaḥ) - Dāruka; राजसिंह (rājasiṃha) - lion among kings;]
(By the chiefs of Sugrīva's army, by excellent horses, by those swift as the mind, with golden-adorned bodies, well-yoked, Dāruka, with joined palms, reported to Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa), O lion among kings.)
Dāruka, the lion among kings, with joined palms, reported to Acyuta (Kṛṣṇa) that the well-yoked chariot, adorned with gold and drawn by excellent horses as swift as the mind, was ready, accompanied by the chiefs of Sugrīva's army.
