अथ यो विजिगीषेत क्षत्रियः क्षत्रियं युधि। कस्तस्य धर्म्यो विजय एतत्पृष्टो ब्रवीहि मे ॥१२-९६-१॥
atha yo vijigīṣeta kṣatriyaḥ kṣatriyaṃ yudhi। kas tasya dharmyo vijaya etat pṛṣṭo bravīhi me ॥12-96-1॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; यः (yaḥ) - who; विजिगीषेत (vijigīṣeta) - desires to conquer; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a Kshatriya; क्षत्रियं (kṣatriyaṃ) - (another) Kshatriya; युधि (yudhi) - in battle; कः (kaḥ) - who; तस्य (tasya) - his; धर्म्यः (dharmyaḥ) - righteous; in accordance with dharma; विजयः (vijayaḥ) - victory; एतत् (etat) - this; पृष्टः (pṛṣṭaḥ) - asked; ब्रवीहि (bravīhi) - tell; speak; मे (me) - to me;]
(Now, who, desiring to conquer, a Kshatriya, (another) Kshatriya, in battle; who, his, righteous, victory; this, asked, tell, to me.)
Now, if a Kshatriya wishes to conquer another Kshatriya in battle, whose victory is righteous? Tell me this, as I ask you.

ससहायोऽसहायो वा राष्ट्रमागम्य भूमिपः। ब्रूयादहं वो राजेति रक्षिष्यामि च वः सदा ॥१२-९६-२॥
sasahāyo'sahāyo vā rāṣṭram āgamya bhūmipaḥ। brūyād ahaṃ vo rājeti rakṣiṣyāmi ca vaḥ sadā॥12-96-2॥
[ससहायः (sasahāyaḥ) - with allies; असहायः (asahāyaḥ) - without allies; वा (vā) - or; राष्ट्रम् (rāṣṭram) - kingdom; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; भूमिपः (bhūmipaḥ) - king; ब्रूयात् (brūyāt) - should say; अहम् (aham) - I; वः (vaḥ) - to you; राजा (rājā) - king; इति (iti) - thus; रक्षिष्यामि (rakṣiṣyāmi) - I will protect; च (ca) - and; वः (vaḥ) - you; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(With allies or without allies, having come to the kingdom, the king should say: "I am your king," and "I will always protect you.")
Whether with or without allies, upon entering the kingdom, the king should declare to the people: "I am your king and I will always protect you."
मम धर्म्यं बलिं दत्त किं वा मां प्रतिपत्स्यथ। ते चेत्तमागतं तत्र वृणुयुः कुशलं भवेत् ॥१२-९६-३॥
mama dharmyaṃ baliṃ datta kiṃ vā māṃ pratipatsyatha। te cettamāgataṃ tatra vṛṇuyuḥ kuśalaṃ bhavet ॥12-96-3॥
[मम (mama) - my; of me; धर्म्यं (dharmyaṃ) - righteous; in accordance with dharma; बलिं (baliṃ) - offering; tribute; दत्त (datta) - given; offered; किं (kiṃ) - what; whether; वा (vā) - or; मां (māṃ) - me; to me; प्रतिपत्स्यथ (pratipatsyatha) - will accept; will receive; ते (te) - they; चेत् (cet) - if; तम् (tam) - him; that one; आगतं (āgataṃ) - arrived; come; तत्र (tatra) - there; वृणुयुः (vṛṇuyuḥ) - would choose; would select; कुशलं (kuśalaṃ) - welfare; well-being; भवेत् (bhavet) - would be; would become;]
(My righteous offering given, what or will you accept me? If they would choose him who has come there, welfare would be.)
If my righteous offering has been given, will you accept me or not? If they choose the one who has come there, then welfare would result.
ते चेदक्षत्रियाः सन्तो विरुध्येयुः कथञ्चन। सर्वोपायैर्नियन्तव्या विकर्मस्था नराधिप ॥१२-९६-४॥
te ced akṣatriyāḥ santo virudhyeyuḥ kathañcana। sarvopāyair niyantavyā vikarmasthā narādhipa ॥12-96-4॥
[ते (te) - they; चेत् (cet) - if; अक्षत्रियाः (akṣatriyāḥ) - non-Kṣatriyas; सन्तः (santaḥ) - being; विरुध्येयुः (virudhyeyuḥ) - would oppose; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way; सर्वोपायैः (sarvopāyaiḥ) - by all means; नियन्तव्याः (niyantavyāḥ) - must be restrained; विकर्मस्थाः (vikarmasthāḥ) - engaged in improper acts; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; ॥१२-९६-४॥ (॥12-96-4॥) - ;]
(They, if being non-Kṣatriyas, would oppose in any way, by all means must be restrained, engaged in improper acts, O king.)
O king, if those who are not Kṣatriyas in any way oppose and engage in improper acts, they must be restrained by all means.
अशक्तं क्षत्रियं मत्वा शस्त्रं गृह्णात्यथापरः। त्राणायाप्यसमर्थं तं मन्यमानमतीव च ॥१२-९६-५॥
aśaktaṃ kṣatriyaṃ matvā śastraṃ gṛhṇāty athāparaḥ। trāṇāyāpy asamarthaṃ taṃ manyamānam atīva ca ॥12-96-5॥
[अशक्तम् (aśaktam) - incapable; powerless; क्षत्रियम् (kṣatriyam) - the kṣatriya; warrior; मत्वा (matvā) - having considered; having thought; शस्त्रम् (śastram) - weapon; गृह्णाति (gṛhṇāti) - takes; seizes; अथ (atha) - then; and then; अपरः (aparaḥ) - another; the other; त्राणाय (trāṇāya) - for protection; for saving; अपि (api) - even; also; असमर्थम् (asamartham) - incapable; not able; तम् (tam) - him; that one; मन्यमानः (manyamānaḥ) - thinking; considering; अतीव (atīva) - exceedingly; very much; च (ca) - and;]
(Having considered the kṣatriya as incapable, another then takes up the weapon, thinking him even for protection as incapable, and exceedingly so.)
Thinking the kṣatriya to be powerless, another takes up the weapon, believing him to be utterly incapable even for protection.

(Now, if a Kṣatriya king approaches a Kṣatriya, how is he to be fought against? That tell me, grandfather.)
Now, O grandfather, if a Kṣatriya king approaches another Kṣatriya, tell me how he should be opposed in battle.

नासंनद्धो नाकवचो योद्धव्यः क्षत्रियो रणे। एक एकेन वाच्यश्च विसृजस्व क्षिपामि च ॥१२-९६-७॥
nāsaṁnaddho nākavaco yoddhavyaḥ kṣatriyo raṇe। eka ekena vācyaś ca visṛjasva kṣipāmi ca ॥12-96-7॥
[न (na) - not; असंनद्धः (asaṁnaddhaḥ) - unarmored; न (na) - not; अवचः (akavacaḥ) - without armor; योद्धव्यः (yoddhavyaḥ) - to be fought; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - warrior; रणे (raṇe) - in battle; एक (eka) - one; एकेन (ekena) - by one; वाच्यः (vācyaḥ) - to be told; च (ca) - and; विसृजस्व (visṛjasva) - release; क्षिपामि (kṣipāmi) - I throw; च (ca) - and;]
(Not unarmored, not without armor, to be fought is the warrior in battle. One by one is to be told, and release, I throw and.)
A warrior should not be fought if he is unarmored or without armor in battle. Each should be addressed one by one; now release, I am about to throw.
स चेत्संनद्ध आगच्छेत्संनद्धव्यं ततो भवेत्। स चेत्ससैन्य आगच्छेत्ससैन्यस्तमथाह्वयेत् ॥१२-९६-८॥
sa cetsamnaddha āgacchetsamnaddhavyaṃ tato bhavet। sa cetsasainya āgacchetsasainyastamathāhvayet ॥12-96-8॥
[स (sa) - he; चेत् (cet) - if; संनद्धः (saṃnaddhaḥ) - armed; आगच्छेत् (āgacchet) - should come; संनद्धव्यम् (saṃnaddhavyam) - should be armed; ततः (tataḥ) - then; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; स (sa) - he; चेत् (cet) - if; सैन्यः (sainyaḥ) - with army; आगच्छेत् (āgacchet) - should come; सैन्यः (sainyaḥ) - with army; तम् (tam) - him; अथ (atha) - then; आह्वयेत् (āhvayet) - should challenge;]
(He, if armed, should come, then should be armed. He, if with army, should come, then with army should challenge him.)
If he comes armed, then he should be met armed. If he comes with an army, then he should be challenged with an army.
स चेन्निकृत्या युध्येत निकृत्या तं प्रयोधयेत्। अथ चेद्धर्मतो युध्येद्धर्मेणैव निवारयेत् ॥१२-९६-९॥
sa cennikṛtyā yudhyeta nikṛtyā taṃ prayodhayet। atha ceddharmato yudhyeddharmeṇaiva nivārayet ॥12-96-9॥
[स (sa) - he; चेत् (cet) - if; निकृत्या (nikṛtyā) - by deceit; युध्येत (yudhyeta) - should fight; निकृत्या (nikṛtyā) - by deceit; तं (taṃ) - him; प्रयोधयेत् (prayodhayet) - should oppose; अथ (atha) - but; चेत् (cet) - if; धर्मतः (dharmataḥ) - righteously; युध्येत् (yudhyet) - should fight; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - with righteousness; एव (eva) - only; निवारयेत् (nivārayet) - should restrain;]
(He, if by deceit should fight, by deceit him should oppose. But if righteously should fight, with righteousness only should restrain.)
If he fights deceitfully, he should be opposed by deceit; but if he fights righteously, he should be restrained only by righteousness.
नाश्वेन रथिनं यायादुदियाद्रथिनं रथी। व्यसने न प्रहर्तव्यं न भीताय जिताय च ॥१२-९६-१०॥
nāśvena rathinaṃ yāyādudiyādrathinaṃ rathī। vyasane na prahartavyaṃ na bhītāya jitāya ca ॥12-96-10॥
[न (na) - not; अश्वेन (aśvena) - with a horse; रथिनं (rathinam) - charioteer; यायात् (yāyāt) - should go; उदियात् (udiyāt) - should ascend; रथिनं (rathinam) - charioteer; रथी (rathī) - chariot-warrior; वयसने (vyasane) - in distress; न (na) - not; प्रहर्तव्यं (prahartavyaṃ) - should strike; न (na) - not; भीताय (bhītāya) - to the frightened; जिताय (jitāya) - to the conquered; च (ca) - and;]
(Not with a horse should a charioteer go, should ascend a charioteer a chariot-warrior. In distress, one should not strike, not to the frightened, to the conquered and.)
A chariot-warrior should not proceed with a charioteer who is without a horse, nor should he ascend such a charioteer. In times of distress, one should not strike at the frightened or the conquered.
नेषुर्लिप्तो न कर्णी स्यादसतामेतदायुधम्। जयार्थमेव योद्धव्यं न क्रुध्येदजिघांसतः ॥१२-९६-११॥
neṣur lipto na karṇī syād asatām etad āyudham। jayārtham eva yoddhavyaṃ na krudhye dajighāṃsataḥ ॥12-96-11॥
[नेषुः (neṣuḥ) - arrow; (missile; weapon;) लिप्तः (liptaḥ) - smeared; (covered;) न (na) - not; कर्णी (karṇī) - ear-shaped (part of arrow); स्यात् (syāt) - should be; असताम् (asatām) - of the wicked; एतत् (etat) - this; आयुधम् (āyudham) - weapon; जयार्थम् (jayārtham) - for the sake of victory; एव (eva) - only; योद्धव्यम् (yoddhavyam) - should be fought; न (na) - not; क्रुध्येत् (krudhyet) - should get angry; अजिघांसतः (ajighāṃsataḥ) - towards one not wishing to harm;]
(The arrow should not be smeared, nor should it have an ear-shaped part; this is the weapon of the wicked. One should fight only for the sake of victory, not get angry at one who does not wish to harm.)
One should not use arrows smeared or with ear-shaped parts, as such weapons belong to the wicked. Fight only for victory, and do not become angry with those who do not wish to harm.
साधूनां तु मिथोभेदात्साधुश्चेद्व्यसनी भवेत्। सव्रणो नाभिहन्तव्यो नानपत्यः कथञ्चन ॥१२-९६-१२॥
sādhūnāṃ tu mithobhedātsādhuścedvyasanī bhavet। savraṇo nābhihantavyo nānapatyaḥ kathañcana ॥12-96-12॥
[साधूनाम् (sādhūnām) - of the virtuous; तु (tu) - but; मिथः (mithaḥ) - mutual; भेदात् (bhedāt) - from division; साधुः (sādhuḥ) - a virtuous person; चेत् (cet) - if; व्यसनी (vyasanī) - afflicted; भवेत् (bhavet) - should become; सव्रणः (savraṇaḥ) - wounded; न (na) - not; अभिहन्तव्यः (abhihantavyaḥ) - should be struck; न (na) - not; अनपत्यः (anapatyaḥ) - childless; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
(But if, due to mutual division, a virtuous person should become afflicted, a wounded one should not be struck, nor a childless one in any way.)
But if, due to mutual dissension, a virtuous person becomes afflicted, one who is wounded should not be struck, nor should a childless person be harmed in any way.
भग्नशस्त्रो विपन्नाश्वश्छिन्नज्यो हतवाहनः। चिकित्स्यः स्यात्स्वविषये प्राप्यो वा स्वगृहान्भवेत् ॥ निर्व्रणोऽपि च मोक्तव्य एष धर्मः सनातनः ॥१२-९६-१३॥
bhagnaśastro vipannāśvaś-chinnajyo hatavāhanaḥ। cikitsyaḥ syāt-svaviṣaye prāpyo vā svagṛhān-bhavet ॥ nirvraṇo'pi ca moktavya eṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ ॥12-96-13॥
[भग्नशस्त्रः (bhagnaśastraḥ) - one whose weapon is broken; विपन्नाश्वः (vipannāśvaḥ) - whose horse is lost; छिन्नज्यः (chinnajyaḥ) - whose bowstring is cut; हतवाहनः (hatavāhanaḥ) - whose vehicle is destroyed; चिकित्स्यः (cikitsyaḥ) - to be treated; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; स्वविषये (svaviṣaye) - in his own territory; प्राप्यः (prāpyaḥ) - to be brought; वा (vā) - or; स्वगृहान् (svagṛhān) - to his own home; भवेत् (bhavet) - should be; निर्व्रणः (nirvraṇaḥ) - one who is without wounds; अपि (api) - even; च (ca) - and; मोक्तव्यः (moktavyaḥ) - should be released; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - law; सनातनः (sanātanaḥ) - eternal;]
(One whose weapon is broken, whose horse is lost, whose bowstring is cut, whose vehicle is destroyed, should be treated in his own territory or should be brought to his own home. Even one who is without wounds should be released; this is the eternal law.)
A warrior whose weapon is broken, whose horse is lost, whose bowstring is cut, or whose vehicle is destroyed should be cared for in his own territory or brought to his home. Even if he is uninjured, he should be released; this is the eternal law.

tasmāddharmeṇa yoddhavyaṃ manuḥ svāyambhuvo'bravīt। satsu nityaṃ satāṃ dharmastamāsthāya na nāśayet ॥12-96-14॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by dharma; योद्धव्यम् (yoddhavyam) - should be fought; मनुः (manuḥ) - Manu; स्वायम्भुवः (svāyambhuvaḥ) - Svāyambhuva (descendant of Svayambhu); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; सत्सु (satsu) - among the good; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; सताम् (satām) - of the virtuous; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; तम् (tam) - that; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; न (na) - not; नाशयेत् (nāśayet) - should destroy;]
(Therefore, by dharma, it should be fought, Manu Svāyambhuva said. Among the good, always, the dharma of the virtuous, having resorted to that, one should not destroy.)
Therefore, Manu Svāyambhuva said that one must fight by dharma. Among the good, one should always uphold the dharma of the virtuous and, having resorted to it, never destroy it.
यो वै जयत्यधर्मेण क्षत्रियो वर्धमानकः। आत्मानमात्मना हन्ति पापो निकृतिजीवनः ॥१२-९६-१५॥
yo vai jayaty adharmeṇa kṣatriyo vardhamānakaḥ। ātmānam ātmanā hanti pāpo nikṛtijīvanaḥ ॥12-96-15॥
[यो (yaḥ) - who; वै (vai) - indeed; जयति (jayati) - conquers; अधर्मेण (adharmeṇa) - by unrighteousness; क्षत्रियः (kṣatriyaḥ) - a kṣatriya; वर्धमानकः (vardhamānakaḥ) - named Vardhamānaka; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by himself; हन्ति (hanti) - kills; पापः (pāpaḥ) - the sinful one; निकृति (nikṛti) - by deceit; जीवनः (jīvanaḥ) - living;]
(Who indeed conquers by unrighteousness, the kṣatriya named Vardhamānaka, himself by himself kills, the sinful one living by deceit.)
The kṣatriya named Vardhamānaka, who indeed conquers by unrighteous means, destroys himself by his own actions; the sinful one who lives by deceit harms himself.
कर्म चैतदसाधूनामसाधुं साधुना जयेत्। धर्मेण निधनं श्रेयो न जयः पापकर्मणा ॥१२-९६-१६॥
karma caitad asādhūnām asādhuṃ sādhuṇā jayet। dharmeṇa nidhanaṃ śreyo na jayaḥ pāpakarmaṇā ॥12-96-16॥
[कर्म (karma) - action; च (ca) - and; एतत् (etat) - this; असाधूनाम् (asādhūnām) - of the unrighteous; असाधुं (asādhuṃ) - the unrighteous; साधुना (sādhuṇā) - by the righteous; जयेत् (jayet) - should conquer; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - by righteousness; निधनं (nidhanaṃ) - death; श्रेयो (śreyo) - better; न (na) - not; जयः (jayaḥ) - victory; पापकर्मणा (pāpakarmaṇā) - by evil action;]
(Action and this—of the unrighteous, the unrighteous should be conquered by the righteous; by righteousness, death is better, not victory by evil action.)
Action should be such that the unrighteous are conquered by the righteous; it is better to die righteously than to achieve victory through evil deeds.
नाधर्मश्चरितो राजन्सद्यः फलति गौरिव। मूलान्यस्य प्रशाखाश्च दहन्समनुगच्छति ॥१२-९६-१७॥
nādharmas carito rājan sadyaḥ phalati gaur iva। mūlāny asya praśākhāś ca dahann anugacchati ॥12-96-17॥
[न (na) - not; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; चरितः (caritaḥ) - performed; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; फलति (phalati) - bears fruit; गौरिव (gaur iva) - like a cow; मूलानि (mūlāni) - roots; अस्य (asya) - its; प्रशाखाः (praśākhāḥ) - branches; च (ca) - and; दहन् (dahan) - burning; अनुगच्छति (anugacchati) - follows; ॥१२-९६-१७॥ (॥12-96-17॥) -;]
(Not unrighteousness performed, O king, immediately bears fruit like a cow; burning its roots and branches, it follows.)
O king, unrighteous acts do not yield results immediately; just as when a cow is burned, its roots and branches are consumed together, so too the consequences follow in due course.
पापेन कर्मणा वित्तं लब्ध्वा पापः प्रहृष्यति। स वर्धमानः स्तेयेन पापः पापे प्रसज्जति ॥१२-९६-१८॥
pāpena karmaṇā vittaṃ labdhvā pāpaḥ prahṛṣyati। sa vardhamānaḥ steyena pāpaḥ pāpe prasajjati ॥12-96-18॥
[पापेन (pāpena) - by evil; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; वित्तं (vittaṃ) - wealth; लब्ध्वा (labdhvā) - having obtained; पापः (pāpaḥ) - the evil person; प्रहृष्यति (prahṛṣyati) - rejoices; सः (saḥ) - he; वर्धमानः (vardhamānaḥ) - growing; स्तेयेन (steyena) - by theft; पापः (pāpaḥ) - the evil person; पापे (pāpe) - in evil; प्रसज्जति (prasajjati) - becomes attached;]
(By evil action, having obtained wealth, the evil person rejoices. He, growing by theft, the evil person, becomes attached to evil.)
By evil deeds, when a wicked person acquires wealth, he rejoices. As he prospers through theft, the wicked person becomes increasingly attached to evil.
न धर्मोऽस्तीति मन्वानः शुचीनवहसन्निव। अश्रद्दधानभावाच्च विनाशमुपगच्छति ॥१२-९६-१९॥
na dharmo'stīti manvānaḥ śucīn avahasann iva। aśraddadhāna-bhāvāc ca vināśam upagacchati॥12-96-19॥
[न (na) - not; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; अस्ति (asti) - exists; इति (iti) - thus; मन्वानः (manvānaḥ) - thinking; शुचीन् (śucīn) - the pure ones; अवहसन् (avahasan) - mocking; इव (iva) - as if; अश्रद्दधानभावात् (aśraddadhāna-bhāvāt) - from the state of lack of faith; च (ca) - and; विनाशम् (vināśam) - destruction; उपगच्छति (upagacchati) - attains;]
(Not dharma exists thus thinking, the pure ones as if mocking, from the state of lack of faith and destruction attains.)
One who thinks 'there is no dharma', mocking the pure as if, and due to lack of faith, attains destruction.
स बद्धो वारुणैः पाशैरमर्त्य इव मन्यते। महादृतिरिवाध्मातः स्वकृतेन विवर्धते ॥१२-९६-२०॥
