क्लिश्यमानेषु भूतेषु तैस्तैर्भावैस्ततस्ततः। दुर्गाण्यतितरेद्येन तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१२-१११-१॥
kliśyamāneṣu bhūteṣu taistairbhāvaistatastataḥ। durgāṇyatitaredyena tanme brūhi pitāmaha ॥12-111-1॥
[क्लिश्यमानेषु (kliśyamāneṣu) - being afflicted; in those who are suffering; भूतेषु (bhūteṣu) - among beings; तैः तैः (taiḥ taiḥ) - by those various; by those respective; भावैः (bhāvaiḥ) - states; conditions; ततः ततः (tataḥ tataḥ) - from here and there; from various causes; दुर्गाणि (durgāṇi) - difficulties; obstacles; अतितरेत् (atitaret) - may cross over; may overcome; येन (yena) - by which; by whom; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; ब्रूहि (brūhi) - tell; speak; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(In beings who are afflicted, by those various states from here and there, by which one may cross over difficulties, that tell me, O grandsire.)
O grandsire, tell me that means by which one may overcome the various difficulties that arise among beings afflicted by different conditions.

āśrameṣu yathokteṣu yathoktaṃ ye dvijātayaḥ। vartante saṃyatātmāno durgāṇyatitaraṇti te ॥12-111-2॥

वासयन्त्यतिथीन्नित्यं नित्यं ये चानसूयकाः। नित्यं स्वाध्यायशीलाश्च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-४॥

मातापित्रोश्च ये वृत्तिं वर्तन्ते धर्मकोविदाः। वर्जयन्ति दिवास्वप्नं दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-५॥

स्वेषु दारेषु वर्तन्ते न्यायवृत्तेष्वृतावृतौ। अग्निहोत्रपराः सन्तो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-६॥

Those who conduct themselves with their own wives, in righteousness and truth, devoted to Agnihotra, such good people overcome difficulties.
ये न लोभान्नयन्त्यर्थान्राजानो रजसावृताः। विषयान्परिरक्षन्तो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-७॥
ye na lobhān nayanty arthān rājānaḥ rajasā āvṛtāḥ। viṣayān parirakṣantaḥ durgāṇi atitaranti te ॥12-111-7॥

(Who do not lead objects from greed, kings enveloped by passion, protecting sense-objects, they cross over fortresses.)
Kings who, not driven by greed, protect their domains while enveloped by passion, are able to overcome great difficulties.
आहवेषु च ये शूरास्त्यक्त्वा मरणजं भयम्। धर्मेण जयमिच्छन्तो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-८॥
āhaveṣu ca ye śūrās tyaktvā maraṇajaṃ bhayam | dharmeṇa jayam icchanto durgāṇy atitaranti te ॥12-111-8॥

(In battles and those heroes, having abandoned fear arising from death, desiring victory by righteousness, cross over fortresses, they.)
Those heroes who, in battle, abandon the fear that comes from death and seek victory through righteousness, are the ones who overcome even the greatest obstacles.
ये पापानि न कुर्वन्ति कर्मणा मनसा गिरा। निक्षिप्तदण्डा भूतेषु दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-९॥
ye pāpāni na kurvanti karmaṇā manasā girā। nikṣiptadaṇḍā bhūteṣu durgāṇy-atitaranti te ॥12-111-9॥

(Those who do not perform sins by action, mind, or speech, who have renounced punishment towards beings, they cross over difficulties.)
Those who neither commit sins by action, mind, or speech, and who have renounced inflicting punishment on beings, cross over all difficulties.
ये वदन्तीह सत्यानि प्राणत्यागेऽप्युपस्थिते। प्रमाणभूता भूतानां दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१०॥
ye vadantīha satyāni prāṇatyāge'pyupasthite। pramāṇabhūtā bhūtānāṃ durgāṇyatitaraṇti te ॥12-111-10॥

Those who speak the truth even at the risk of their lives, and who become an authority for others, overcome all difficulties.
अनध्यायेषु ये विप्राः स्वाध्यायं नैव कुर्वते। तपोनित्याः सुतपसो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-११॥
anadhyāyeṣu ye viprāḥ svādhyāyaṃ naiva kurvate। taponityāḥ sutapaso durgāṇy-atitaranti te ॥12-111-11॥
[अनध्यायेषु (anadhyāyeṣu) - in times when study is prohibited; ये (ye) - those who; विप्राः (viprāḥ) - Brāhmaṇas; स्वाध्यायं (svādhyāyaṃ) - self-study (of the Veda); न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; कुर्वते (kurvate) - perform; तपोनित्याः (taponityāḥ) - always engaged in austerity; सुतपसः (sutapasaḥ) - of great austerity; दुर्गाणि (durgāṇi) - difficulties; अतितरन्ति (atitaranti) - cross over; ते (te) - they;]
(In times when study is prohibited, those Brāhmaṇas who do not at all perform self-study, but are always engaged in austerity, being of great austerity, they cross over difficulties.)
Brāhmaṇas who refrain from self-study during prohibited times, but are always devoted to great austerity, overcome all difficulties.
कर्माण्यकुहकार्थानि येषां वाचश्च सूनृताः। येषामर्थाश्च साध्वर्था दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१२॥
karmāṇyakuhakārthāni yeṣāṃ vācaśca sūnṛtāḥ। yeṣāmarthāśca sādhvarthā durgāṇyatitaranti te ॥12-111-12॥
[कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; अकुहकार्थानि (akuhakārthāni) - not having deceptive purposes; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; वाचः (vācaḥ) - words; च (ca) - and; सूनृताः (sūnṛtāḥ) - truthful; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of whom; अर्थाः (arthāḥ) - purposes; च (ca) - and; साध्वर्थाः (sādhvarthāḥ) - righteous purposes; दुर्गाणि (durgāṇi) - difficulties; अतितरन्ति (atitaranti) - cross over; ते (te) - they;]
(Actions not having deceptive purposes, of whom words also are truthful, of whom purposes also are righteous purposes, difficulties they cross over.)
Those whose actions are free from deceit, whose words are truthful, and whose purposes are righteous, they overcome difficulties.
ये तपश्च तपस्यन्ति कौमारब्रह्मचारिणः। विद्यावेदव्रतस्नाता दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१३॥
ye tapaś ca tapasyanti kaumāra-brahmacāriṇaḥ। vidyā-veda-vrata-snātā durgāṇy atitaranti te ॥12-111-13॥

Those who practice austerity and celibacy from youth, and who are initiated in the vow of knowledge and the Veda, overcome all difficulties.
ये च संशान्तरजसः संशान्ततमसश्च ये। सत्ये स्थिता महात्मानो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१४॥
ye ca saṃśāntarajasaḥ saṃśāntatamasaśca ye। satye sthitā mahātmāno durgāṇyatitaranti te ॥12-111-14॥

(Who and (those) whose passion is completely calmed, whose darkness is completely calmed and who are established in truth, the great souls, they cross over difficulties.)
Those whose passion and darkness are completely calmed, who are established in truth, those great souls cross over all difficulties.
येषां न कश्चित्त्रसति त्रसन्ति न च कस्यचित्। येषामात्मसमो लोको दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१५॥
yeṣāṃ na kaścit trasati trasanti na ca kasyacit। yeṣām ātmasamo loko durgāṇy atitaranti te ॥12-111-15॥

(Of whom no one fears, nor do they fear anyone; of whom the world is equal to oneself, they cross over difficulties.)
Those from whom no one is afraid, and who themselves do not fear anyone; for whom the world is like themselves, they overcome all difficulties.
परश्रिया न तप्यन्ते ये सन्तः पुरुषर्षभाः। ग्राम्यादन्नान्निवृत्ताश्च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१६॥
paraśriyā na tapyante ye santaḥ puruṣarṣabhāḥ। grāmyādannān nivṛttāś ca durgāṇy atitaranti te ॥12-111-16॥

सर्वान्देवान्नमस्यन्ति सर्वान्धर्मांश्च शृण्वते। ये श्रद्दधाना दान्ताश्च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१७॥
sarvāndevānnamasyanti sarvān dharmāṁś ca śṛṇvate. ye śraddadhānā dāntāś ca durgāṇy atitaranti te ॥12-111-17॥

ये श्राद्धानि च कुर्वन्ति तिथ्यां तिथ्यां प्रजार्थिनः। सुविशुद्धेन मनसा दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१९॥
ye śrāddhāni ca kurvanti tithyāṃ tithyāṃ prajārthinaḥ। suviśuddhena manasā durgāṇyatitaraṇti te ॥12-111-19॥

(Those who do not at all make anger, who pacify the angry, and who do not become angry towards servants, they cross over difficulties.)
Those who never give rise to anger, who pacify those who are angry, and who do not get angry with their servants, overcome all difficulties.
मधु मांसं च ये नित्यं वर्जयन्तीह मानवाः। जन्मप्रभृति मद्यं च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-२१॥
madhu māṁsaṁ ca ye nityaṁ varjayantīha mānavāḥ। janmaprabhṛti madyaṁ ca durgāṇyatitaraṇti te ॥12-111-21॥
