युधिष्ठिर उवाच॥
Yudhiṣṭhira said.
क्लिश्यमानेषु भूतेषु तैस्तैर्भावैस्ततस्ततः। दुर्गाण्यतितरेद्येन तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१२-१११-१॥
O grandsire, tell me that means by which one may overcome the various difficulties that arise among beings afflicted by different conditions.
भीष्म उवाच॥
Bhīṣma said.
आश्रमेषु यथोक्तेषु यथोक्तं ये द्विजातयः। वर्तन्ते संयतात्मानो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-२॥
Those twice-born who live in the prescribed āśramas as instructed, with self-control, overcome difficulties.
ये दम्भान्न जपन्ति स्म येषां वृत्तिश्च संवृता। विषयांश्च निगृह्णन्ति दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-३॥
Those who do not recite out of hypocrisy, whose conduct is restrained, and who restrain sense-objects, they cross over difficulties.
वासयन्त्यतिथीन्नित्यं नित्यं ये चानसूयकाः। नित्यं स्वाध्यायशीलाश्च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-४॥
Those who always welcome guests, are ever free from envy, and are always devoted to self-study, they overcome all difficulties.
मातापित्रोश्च ये वृत्तिं वर्तन्ते धर्मकोविदाः। वर्जयन्ति दिवास्वप्नं दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-५॥
Those who are well-versed in dharma, who follow the conduct of their mother and father and avoid sleeping during the day, overcome all difficulties.
स्वेषु दारेषु वर्तन्ते न्यायवृत्तेष्वृतावृतौ। अग्निहोत्रपराः सन्तो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-६॥
Those who conduct themselves with their own wives, in righteousness and truth, devoted to Agnihotra, such good people overcome difficulties.
ये न लोभान्नयन्त्यर्थान्राजानो रजसावृताः। विषयान्परिरक्षन्तो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-७॥
Kings who, not driven by greed, protect their domains while enveloped by passion, are able to overcome great difficulties.
आहवेषु च ये शूरास्त्यक्त्वा मरणजं भयम्। धर्मेण जयमिच्छन्तो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-८॥
Those heroes who, in battle, abandon the fear that comes from death and seek victory through righteousness, are the ones who overcome even the greatest obstacles.
ये पापानि न कुर्वन्ति कर्मणा मनसा गिरा। निक्षिप्तदण्डा भूतेषु दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-९॥
Those who neither commit sins by action, mind, or speech, and who have renounced inflicting punishment on beings, cross over all difficulties.
ये वदन्तीह सत्यानि प्राणत्यागेऽप्युपस्थिते। प्रमाणभूता भूतानां दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१०॥
Those who speak the truth even at the risk of their lives, and who become an authority for others, overcome all difficulties.
अनध्यायेषु ये विप्राः स्वाध्यायं नैव कुर्वते। तपोनित्याः सुतपसो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-११॥
Brāhmaṇas who refrain from self-study during prohibited times, but are always devoted to great austerity, overcome all difficulties.
कर्माण्यकुहकार्थानि येषां वाचश्च सूनृताः। येषामर्थाश्च साध्वर्था दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१२॥
Those whose actions are free from deceit, whose words are truthful, and whose purposes are righteous, they overcome difficulties.
ये तपश्च तपस्यन्ति कौमारब्रह्मचारिणः। विद्यावेदव्रतस्नाता दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१३॥
Those who practice austerity and celibacy from youth, and who are initiated in the vow of knowledge and the Veda, overcome all difficulties.
ये च संशान्तरजसः संशान्ततमसश्च ये। सत्ये स्थिता महात्मानो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१४॥
Those whose passion and darkness are completely calmed, who are established in truth, those great souls cross over all difficulties.
येषां न कश्चित्त्रसति त्रसन्ति न च कस्यचित्। येषामात्मसमो लोको दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१५॥
Those from whom no one is afraid, and who themselves do not fear anyone; for whom the world is like themselves, they overcome all difficulties.
परश्रिया न तप्यन्ते ये सन्तः पुरुषर्षभाः। ग्राम्यादन्नान्निवृत्ताश्च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१६॥
The best of men, who are not troubled by another's wife, who are virtuous, and who abstain from coarse food, overcome all difficulties.
सर्वान्देवान्नमस्यन्ति सर्वान्धर्मांश्च शृण्वते। ये श्रद्दधाना दान्ताश्च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१७॥
Those who have faith and self-restraint, who bow to all gods and listen to all dharmas, they cross over all difficulties.
ये न मानितमिच्छन्ति मानयन्ति च ये परम्। मान्यमाना न मन्यन्ते दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१८॥
Those who do not seek honour for themselves, who honour others, and who, even when honoured, do not become proud, they overcome all difficulties.
ये श्राद्धानि च कुर्वन्ति तिथ्यां तिथ्यां प्रजार्थिनः। सुविशुद्धेन मनसा दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-१९॥
Those who, desiring progeny, perform śrāddha rites on the proper lunar days with a very pure mind, overcome all difficulties.
ये क्रोधं नैव कुर्वन्ति क्रुद्धान्संशमयन्ति च। न च कुप्यन्ति भृत्येभ्यो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-२०॥
Those who never give rise to anger, who pacify those who are angry, and who do not get angry with their servants, overcome all difficulties.
मधु मांसं च ये नित्यं वर्जयन्तीह मानवाः। जन्मप्रभृति मद्यं च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-२१॥
Those humans who always avoid honey, meat, and liquor from birth cross over difficulties.
यात्रार्थं भोजनं येषां सन्तानार्थं च मैथुनम्। वाक्सत्यवचनार्थाय दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-२२॥
Those whose food is for travel, whose sexual union is for progeny, and whose speech is for truthfulness, they overcome all difficulties.
ईश्वरं सर्वभूतानां जगतः प्रभवाप्ययम्। भक्ता नारायणं ये च दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-२३॥
Nārāyaṇa is the lord, the origin and dissolution of all beings in the world; the devotees who worship Nārāyaṇa cross over all difficulties.
य एष रक्तपद्माक्षः पीतवासा महाभुजः। सुहृद्भ्राता च मित्रं च सम्बन्धी च तवाच्युतः ॥१२-१११-२४॥
This one, who has eyes like red lotuses, wears yellow garments, is mighty-armed, is your friend, brother, companion, and relative—Acyuta (Krishna).
य इमान्सकलाँल्लोकांश्चर्मवत्परिवेष्टयेत्। इच्छन्प्रभुरचिन्त्यात्मा गोविन्दः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥१२-१११-२५॥
Govinda, the Supreme Person, whose nature is inconceivable, is the Lord who, if He so desires, could wrap all these worlds as easily as one would wrap them in leather.
स्थितः प्रियहिते जिष्णोः स एष पुरुषर्षभ। राजंस्तव च दुर्धर्षो वैकुण्ठः पुरुषोत्तमः ॥१२-१११-२६॥
O king, this Vaikuṇṭha, the supreme person, who is unassailable, stands established in what is dear and beneficial to the victorious one, and is your own.
य एनं संश्रयन्तीह भक्त्या नारायणं हरिम्। ते तरन्तीह दुर्गाणि न मेऽत्रास्ति विचारणा ॥१२-१११-२७॥
Those who take refuge in Nārāyaṇa Hari here with devotion, they cross over all difficulties here; I have no doubt about this.
दुर्गातितरणं ये च पठन्ति श्रावयन्ति च। पाठयन्ति च विप्रेभ्यो दुर्गाण्यतितरन्ति ते ॥१२-१११-२८॥
Those who recite, make others hear, and teach the means of overcoming difficulties to the Brāhmaṇas, themselves overcome difficulties.
इति कृत्यसमुद्देशः कीर्तितस्ते मयानघ। सन्तरेद्येन दुर्गाणि परत्रेह च मानवः ॥१२-१११-२९॥
Thus, O sinless one, I have declared to you the enumeration of duties, by which a man may overcome difficulties both here and in the next world.
