नामृतस्येव पर्याप्तिर्ममास्ति ब्रुवति त्वयि। तस्मात्कथय भूयस्त्वं धर्ममेव पितामह ॥१२-१२७-१॥
nāmṛtasyeva paryāptirmamāsti bruvati tvayi। tasmātkathaya bhūyastvaṃ dharmameva pitāmaha ॥12-127-1॥
[नामृतस्य (nāmṛtasya) - of immortality; इव (iva) - like; पर्याप्तिः (paryāptiḥ) - sufficiency; मम (mama) - my; अस्ति (asti) - is; ब्रुवति (bruvati) - when (you) speak; त्वयि (tvayi) - by you; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; कथय (kathaya) - tell; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - more; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; धर्मम् (dharmam) - dharma; एव (eva) - only; पितामह (pitāmaha) - O grandsire;]
(Of immortality like sufficiency my is when (you) speak by you. Therefore tell more you dharma only O grandsire.)
When you speak, I feel as if I have attained the sufficiency of immortality. Therefore, O grandsire, please tell me more about dharma.

अत्राप्युदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम्। गौतमस्य च संवादं यमस्य च महात्मनः ॥१२-१२७-२॥
atrāpy udāharantīmam itihāsaṃ purātanam। gautamasya ca saṃvādaṃ yamasya ca mahātmanaḥ ॥12-127-2॥

षष्टिं वर्षसहस्राणि सोऽतप्यद्गौतमस्तपः। तमुग्रतपसं युक्तं तपसा भावितं मुनिम् ॥१२-१२७-४॥
ṣaṣṭiṃ varṣasahasrāṇi so'tapyad gautamas tapaḥ। tam ugratapasaṃ yuktaṃ tapasā bhāvitaṃ munim ॥12-127-4॥

(Sixty thousand years he Gautama performed penance. Him, endowed with severe penance, purified by penance, the sage.)
Gautama performed penance for sixty thousand years. He, the sage, was endowed with severe penance and purified by his austerities.
उपयातो नरव्याघ्र लोकपालो यमस्तदा। तमपश्यत्सुतपसमृषिं वै गौतमं मुनिम् ॥१२-१२७-५॥
upayāto naravyāghra lokapālo yamastadā। tamapaśyatsutapasamṛṣiṃ vai gautamaṃ munim ॥12-127-5॥
[उपयातः (upayātaḥ) - having approached; नरव्याघ्र (naravyāghra) - tiger among men; लोकपालः (lokapālaḥ) - guardian of the world; यमः (yamaḥ) - Yama; तदा (tadā) - then; तम् (tam) - him; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; सुतपसम् (sutapasam) - great ascetic; ऋषिं (ṛṣiṃ) - sage; वै (vai) - indeed; गौतमम् (gautamam) - Gautama; मुनिम् (munim) - sage;]
(Having approached, the tiger among men, the guardian of the world, Yama then saw him, the great ascetic, the sage, indeed Gautama the sage.)
Then Yama, the guardian of the world and tiger among men, approached and saw Gautama, the great ascetic and sage.
स तं विदित्वा ब्रह्मर्षिर्यममागतमोजसा। प्राञ्जलिः प्रयतो भूत्वा उपसृप्तस्तपोधनः ॥१२-१२७-६॥
sa taṃ viditvā brahmarṣiryamamāgatamojasā। prāñjaliḥ prayato bhūtvā upasṛptastapodhanaḥ ॥12-127-6॥
[स (sa) - he; तं (taṃ) - him; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; ब्रह्मर्षिः (brahmarṣiḥ) - the Brahmarṣi; यमम् (yamam) - Yama; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived; ओजसा (ojasā) - with energy; प्राञ्जलिः (prāñjaliḥ) - with folded hands; प्रयतः (prayataḥ) - self-controlled; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; उपसृप्तः (upasṛptaḥ) - approached; तपोधनः (tapodhanaḥ) - the ascetic (one whose wealth is austerity);]
(He, having known him, the Brahmarṣi, Yama, arrived with energy; with folded hands, having become self-controlled, the ascetic approached.)
The Brahmarṣi, realizing that Yama had arrived with great energy, became self-controlled, folded his hands, and the ascetic approached.
तं धर्मराजो दृष्ट्वैव नमस्कृत्य नरर्षभम्। न्यमन्त्रयत धर्मेण क्रियतां किमिति ब्रुवन् ॥१२-१२७-७॥
taṃ dharmarājo dṛṣṭvaiva namaskṛtya nararṣabham। nyamantraya ta dharmeṇa kriyatāṃ kimiti bruvan ॥12-127-7॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; धर्मराजः (dharmarājaḥ) - Dharmarāja; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; एव (eva) - indeed; नमस्कृत्य (namaskṛtya) - having bowed; नरर्षभम् (nararṣabham) - bull among men; न्यमन्त्रयत् (nyamantrayat) - addressed; धर्मेण (dharmeṇa) - with righteousness; क्रियताम् (kriyatām) - let it be done; किम् (kim) - what; इति (iti) - thus; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - saying;]
(Him Dharmarāja, having seen indeed, having bowed to the bull among men, addressed with righteousness: "Let it be done, what?" thus saying.)
Dharmarāja, upon seeing him, bowed to the bull among men and, with righteousness, addressed him, saying: "What should be done?"

मातापितृभ्यामानृण्यं किं कृत्वा समवाप्नुयात्। कथं च लोकानश्नाति पुरुषो दुर्लभाञ्शुभान् ॥१२-१२७-८॥
mātāpitṛbhyām ānṛṇyaṃ kiṃ kṛtvā samavāpnuyāt। kathaṃ ca lokān aśnāti puruṣo durlabhāñ śubhān ॥12-127-8॥
[मातापितृभ्याम् (mātāpitṛbhyām) - from mother and father; (ablative dual) आनृण्यं (ānṛṇyam) - freedom from debt; (to them) किं (kiṃ) - what; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; समवाप्नुयात् (samavāpnuyāt) - may one attain; कथं (kathaṃ) - how; च (ca) - and; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अश्नाति (aśnāti) - enjoys; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a person; दुर्लभान् (durlabhān) - difficult to obtain; शुभान् (śubhān) - auspicious; ॥१२-१२७-८॥ (॥12-127-8॥) - (verse number;);]
(From mother and father, freedom from debt—what having done may one attain? And how does a person enjoy worlds that are difficult to obtain and auspicious?)
What must one do to be free from debt to one's mother and father? And how does a person attain and enjoy those auspicious worlds that are difficult to obtain?

तपःशौचवता नित्यं सत्यधर्मरतेन च। मातापित्रोरहरहः पूजनं कार्यमञ्जसा ॥१२-१२७-९॥
tapaḥśaucavatā nityaṃ satyadharmaratena ca। mātāpitroraharahaḥ pūjanaṃ kāryamañjasā ॥12-127-9॥
[तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; शौचवता (śaucavatā) - with purity; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; सत्यधर्मरतेन (satyadharmaratena) - by one devoted to truth and righteousness; च (ca) - and; मातापित्रोः (mātāpitror) - of mother and father; अहरहः (aharahaḥ) - every day; पूजनं (pūjanam) - worship; कार्यं (kāryam) - should be done; अञ्जसा (añjasā) - properly;]
(By one who is always endowed with austerity and purity, and devoted to truth and righteousness, the worship of mother and father should be performed every day properly.)

अश्वमेधैश्च यष्टव्यं बहुभिः स्वाप्तदक्षिणैः। तेन लोकानुपाश्नाति पुरुषोऽद्भुतदर्शनान् ॥१२-१२७-१०॥
aśvamedhaiś ca yaṣṭavyaṃ bahubhiḥ svāptadakṣiṇaiḥ। tena lokān upāśnāti puruṣo 'dbhutadarśanān ॥12-127-10॥
[अश्वमेधैः (aśvamedhaiḥ) - by horse-sacrifices; च (ca) - and; यष्टव्यम् (yaṣṭavyam) - should be performed; बहुभिः (bahubhiḥ) - by many; स्वाप्तदक्षिणैः (svāptadakṣiṇaiḥ) - with acquired gifts; तेन (tena) - by that; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; उपाश्नाति (upāśnāti) - attains; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - the person; अद्भुतदर्शनान् (adbhutadarśanān) - of wonderful sights;]
(By horse-sacrifices and by many acquired gifts, it should be performed; by that, the person attains worlds of wonderful sights.)
By performing horse-sacrifices with many acquired gifts, a person attains worlds of wondrous visions.
