ततस्तेषां समस्तानामृषीणामृषिसत्तमः। ऋषभो नाम विप्रर्षिः स्मयन्निव ततोऽब्रवीत् ॥१२-१२६-१॥
tatasteṣāṃ samastānām ṛṣīṇām ṛṣi-sattamaḥ। ṛṣabho nāma vipra-ṛṣiḥ smayanniva tato'bravīt ॥12-126-1॥

पुराहं राजशार्दूल तीर्थान्यनुचरन्प्रभो। समासादितवान्दिव्यं नरनारायणाश्रमम् ॥१२-१२६-२॥

यत्र सा बदरी रम्या ह्रदो वैहायसस्तथा। यत्र चाश्वशिरा राजन्वेदान्पठति शाश्वतान् ॥१२-१२६-३॥
yatra sā badarī ramyā hṛdo vaihāyasas tathā। yatra cāśvaśirā rājan vedān paṭhati śāśvatān ॥12-126-3॥

तस्मिन्सरसि कृत्वाहं विधिवत्तर्पणं पुरा। पितॄणां देवतानां च ततोऽऽश्रममियां तदा ॥१२-१२६-४॥
tasmin sarasi kṛtvā ahaṃ vidhivat tarpaṇaṃ purā। pitṝṇāṃ devatānāṃ ca tato'āśramam iyāṃ tadā॥12-126-4॥

(They sported where those two, Nara and Nārāyaṇa sages, always (reside). Not far from there, to some hermitage for the purpose of staying, I went from there.)

ततश्चीराजिनधरं कृशमुच्चमतीव च। अद्राक्षमृषिमायान्तं तनुं नाम तपोनिधिम् ॥१२-१२६-६॥
tataś cīrājinadharaṃ kṛśam uccamatīva ca। adrākṣam ṛṣim āyāntaṃ tanuṃ nāma taponidhim ॥12-126-6॥

अन्यैर्नरैर्महाबाहो वपुषाष्टगुणान्वितम्। कृशता चापि राजर्षे न दृष्टा तादृशी क्वचित् ॥१२-१२६-७॥
anyair narair mahābāho vapuṣāṣṭaguṇānvitam। kṛśatā cāpi rājarṣe na dṛṣṭā tādṛśī kvacit ॥12-126-7॥
[अन्यैः (anyaiḥ) - by others; नरैः (naraiḥ) - by men; महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed; वपुषा (vapuṣā) - by form; अष्टगुणान्वितम् (aṣṭaguṇānvitam) - endowed with eight qualities; कृशता (kṛśatā) - leanness; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; राजर्षे (rājarṣe) - O royal sage; न (na) - not; दृष्टा (dṛṣṭā) - seen; तादृशी (tādṛśī) - such; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere;]
(O mighty-armed, by other men, a form endowed with eight qualities, and such leanness also, O royal sage, has not been seen anywhere.)
O mighty-armed one, no other men have ever seen a form endowed with eight qualities and such leanness as this, O royal sage, anywhere.
शरीरमपि राजेन्द्र तस्य कानिष्ठिकासमम्। ग्रीवा बाहू तथा पादौ केशाश्चाद्भुतदर्शनाः ॥१२-१२६-८॥
śarīram api rājeṃdra tasya kāniṣṭhikāsamam। grīvā bāhū tathā pādau keśāś cādbhutadarśanāḥ ॥12-126-8॥

शिरः कायानुरूपं च कर्णौ नेत्रे तथैव च। तस्य वाक्चैव चेष्टा च सामान्ये राजसत्तम ॥१२-१२६-९॥
śiraḥ kāyānurūpaṃ ca karṇau netre tathaiva ca। tasya vākcaiva ceṣṭā ca sāmānye rājasattama ॥12-126-9॥

(Head proportional to the body and ears, eyes likewise and; his speech and activity indeed and in general, O best of kings.)
O best of kings, the head, ears, and eyes should be proportional to the body; likewise, his speech and actions should also be generally appropriate.
दृष्ट्वाहं तं कृशं विप्रं भीतः परमदुर्मनाः। पादौ तस्याभिवाद्याथ स्थितः प्राञ्जलिरग्रतः ॥१२-१२६-१०॥
dṛṣṭvāhaṃ taṃ kṛśaṃ vipraṃ bhītaḥ paramadurmanaḥ। pādau tasyābhivādyātha sthitaḥ prāñjaliragrataḥ ॥12-126-10॥

Seeing that emaciated brāhmaṇa, I, overcome with fear and deep distress, saluted his feet and then stood before him with joined palms.
निवेद्य नाम गोत्रं च पितरं च नरर्षभ। प्रदिष्टे चासने तेन शनैरहमुपाविशम् ॥१२-१२६-११॥
nivedya nāma gotraṃ ca pitaraṃ ca nararṣabha। pradiṣṭe cāsane tena śanair aham upāviśam ॥12-126-11॥

ततः स कथयामास कथा धर्मार्थसंहिताः। ऋषिमध्ये महाराज तत्र धर्मभृतां वरः ॥१२-१२६-१२॥

तस्मिंस्तु कथयत्येव राजा राजीवलोचनः। उपायाज्जवनैरश्वैः सबलः सावरोधनः ॥१२-१२६-१३॥

smaran putram araṇye vai naṣṭam paramadurmanāḥ। bhūridyumna-pitā dhīmān raghu-śreṣṭhaḥ mahā-yaśāḥ॥12-126-14॥

(Remembering his son lost in the forest indeed, extremely distressed, the father of Bhūridyumna, the wise, the best of the Raghu dynasty, of great fame.)
Extremely distressed, the wise and illustrious Raghu, father of Bhūridyumna, kept remembering his son who was lost in the forest.
इह द्रक्ष्यामि तं पुत्रं द्रक्ष्यामीहेति पार्थिवः। एवमाशाकृतो राजंश्चरन्वनमिदं पुरा ॥१२-१२६-१५॥

(Here I shall see that son, 'I shall see here'—thus the king, thus filled with hope, O king, wandering this forest formerly.)
The king, filled with hope, used to wander this forest in former times, thinking, 'Here I shall see that son; I shall see him here.'
दुर्लभः स मया द्रष्टुं नूनं परमधार्मिकः। एकः पुत्रो महारण्ये नष्ट इत्यसकृत्तदा ॥१२-१२६-१६॥
durlabhaḥ sa mayā draṣṭuṃ nūnaṃ paramadhārmikaḥ। ekaḥ putro mahāraṇye naṣṭa ityasakṛttadā ॥12-126-16॥
[दुर्लभः (durlabhaḥ) - difficult to obtain; स (sa) - he; मया (mayā) - by me; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; परमधार्मिकः (paramadhārmikaḥ) - supremely righteous; एकः (ekaḥ) - one; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; महारण्ये (mahāraṇye) - in the great forest; नष्टः (naṣṭaḥ) - lost; इति (iti) - thus; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He, difficult to obtain, by me to see, indeed, supremely righteous; one son in the great forest lost, thus repeatedly then.)
That supremely righteous one, my only son, who is difficult to find, is lost in the great forest—I have said this again and again at that time.
दुर्लभः स मया द्रष्टुमाशा च महती मम। तया परीतगात्रोऽहं मुमूर्षुर्नात्र संशयः ॥१२-१२६-१७॥
durlabhaḥ sa mayā draṣṭum āśā ca mahatī mama। tayā parīta-gātraḥ ahaṃ mumūrṣuḥ na atra saṃśayaḥ ॥12-126-17॥

(He is difficult to obtain by me to see; hope also great my; by that with body afflicted I desiring to die; not here doubt.)
He is very difficult for me to see, and my hope is great; because of that, with my body afflicted, I am desiring to die—there is no doubt about it.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा स भगवांस्तनुर्मुनिवरोत्तमः। अवाक्षिरा ध्यानपरो मुहूर्तमिव तस्थिवान् ॥१२-१२६-१८॥
etat-śrutvā sa bhagavāṁs tanur munivarottamaḥ। avākśirā dhyānaparo muhūrtam iva tasthivān ॥12-126-18॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; स (sa) - he; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; तनुः (tanuḥ) - body; मुनिवर (munivara) - best of sages; उत्तमः (uttamaḥ) - excellent; अवाक् (avāk) - downward; शिरा (śirā) - head; ध्यानपरः (dhyānaparaḥ) - absorbed in meditation; मुहूर्तम् (muhūrtam) - for a moment; इव (iva) - as if; तस्थिवान् (tasthivān) - stood;]
(Having heard this, he, the venerable one, the excellent-bodied best of sages, with head bent downward, absorbed in meditation, stood as if for a moment.)
Hearing this, the venerable sage of excellent form stood for a moment with his head bowed, deeply absorbed in meditation.
तमनुध्यान्तमालक्ष्य राजा परमदुर्मनाः। उवाच वाक्यं दीनात्मा मन्दं मन्दमिवासकृत् ॥१२-१२६-१९॥
tam anudhyāntam ālakṣya rājā paramadurmanāḥ। uvāca vākyaṃ dīnātmā mandaṃ mandam ivāsakṛt ॥12-126-19॥
[तम् (tam) - him; अनुध्यान्तम् (anudhyāntam) - reflecting upon; आलक्ष्य (ālakṣya) - having observed; राजा (rājā) - the king; परमदुर्मनाः (paramadurmanāḥ) - extremely distressed in mind; उवाच (uvāca) - said; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - words; दीनात्मा (dīnātmā) - with a dejected soul; मन्दम् (mandam) - slowly; मन्दम् (mandam) - slowly; इव (iva) - as if; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly;]
(Having observed him reflecting, the king, extremely distressed in mind, with a dejected soul, said words slowly, slowly, as if repeatedly.)

दुर्लभं किं नु विप्रर्षे आशायाश्चैव किं भवेत्। ब्रवीतु भगवानेतद्यदि गुह्यं न तन्मयि ॥१२-१२६-२०॥
durlabhaṃ kiṃ nu viprarṣe āśāyāścaiva kiṃ bhavet। bravītu bhagavānetadyadi guhyaṃ na tanmayi॥12-126-20॥

(What is difficult to obtain, indeed, O best of Brāhmaṇas? And what may be the hope? Let the venerable one speak this, if it is not a secret to me.)
O best of Brāhmaṇas, what is truly difficult to obtain? And what may be the nature of hope? Let the venerable one tell me this, if it is not a secret.
महर्षिर्भगवांस्तेन पूर्वमासीद्विमानितः। बालिशां बुद्धिमास्थाय मन्दभाग्यतयात्मनः ॥१२-१२६-२१॥
maharṣir bhagavāṁs tena pūrvam āsīd vimāṇitaḥ। bāliśāṁ buddhim āsthāya mandabhāgyatayātmanaḥ ॥12-126-21॥

अपृच्छंश्चैव ते तत्र राजानमपराजितम्। प्रयोजनमिदं सर्वमाश्रमस्य प्रवेशनम् ॥१२-१२६-२६॥

evamukte tu vacane rājñā muniradhomukhaḥ। tūṣṇīmevābhavattatra na ca pratyuktavānnṛpam ॥12-126-29॥

स हि तेन पुरा विप्रो राज्ञा नात्यर्थमानितः। आशाकृशं च राजेन्द्र तपो दीर्घं समास्थितः ॥१२-१२६-३०॥
sa hi tena purā vipro rājñā nātyarthamāṇitaḥ। āśākṛśaṃ ca rājendra tapo dīrghaṃ samāsthitaḥ ॥12-126-30॥

(Of hope what thinness and what here on earth difficult to obtain; let the venerable one speak this truth indeed, one who sees the essence of dharma and artha.)
What is the thinness of hope, and what is difficult to obtain here on earth? Let the venerable one, who truly understands dharma and artha, declare this truth.

संशयस्तु महाप्राज्ञ सञ्जातो हृदये मम। तन्मे सत्तम तत्त्वेन वक्तुमर्हसि पृच्छतः ॥१२-१२६-३७॥
saṃśayastu mahāprājña sañjāto hṛdaye mama। tanme sattama tattvena vaktumarhasi pṛcchataḥ ॥12-126-37॥
[संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; तु (tu) - but; महाप्राज्ञ (mahāprājña) - O greatly wise one; सञ्जातः (sañjātaḥ) - has arisen; हृदये (hṛdaye) - in (my) heart; मम (mama) - my; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; सत्तम (sattama) - O best one; तत्त्वेन (tattvena) - truly; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought; पृच्छतः (pṛcchataḥ) - (as I am) asking;]
(But, O greatly wise one, a doubt has arisen in my heart; that, O best one, you ought truly to speak to me as I am asking.)

(From you, what more insignificant thing indeed should the revered one say this? If a secret is not to you, O brāhmaṇa, in this world, what indeed is unattainable?)
What could the revered one say that is more insignificant than what you know? O brāhmaṇa, if there is no secret for you in this world, then what indeed is unattainable?

दुर्लभोऽप्यथ वा नास्ति योऽर्थी धृतिमिवाप्नुयात्। सुदुर्लभतरस्तात योऽर्थिनं नावमन्यते ॥१२-१२६-३९॥
durlabho'pyatha vā nāsti yo'rthī dhṛtimivāpnuyāt। sudurlabhatarastātha yo'rthinaṃ nāvamanyate ॥12-126-39॥
[दुर्लभः (durlabhaḥ) - difficult to obtain; अपि (api) - even; अथ (atha) - then; वा (vā) - or; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; यः (yaḥ) - who; अर्थी (arthī) - a supplicant; धृतिम् (dhṛtim) - steadfastness; इव (iva) - like; आप्नुयात् (āpnuyāt) - might obtain; सुदुर्लभतरः (sudurlabhataraḥ) - even more difficult to obtain; तात (tāta) - dear one; यः (yaḥ) - who; अर्थिनम् (arthinam) - a supplicant; न (na) - not; अवमन्यते (avamanyate) - despises;]
(Even one who might obtain steadfastness is difficult to find, or does not exist, who is a supplicant; dear one, even more difficult to find is he who does not despise a supplicant.)
It is rare, or perhaps impossible, to find a supplicant who attains steadfastness; dearest, rarer still is the one who does not look down upon a supplicant.
संश्रुत्य नोपक्रियते परं शक्त्या यथार्हतः। सक्ता या सर्वभूतेषु साशा कृशतरी मया ॥१२-१२६-४०॥
saṃśrutya nopakriyate paraṃ śaktyā yathārhataḥ। saktā yā sarvabhūteṣu sāśā kṛśatarī mayā ॥12-126-40॥

(A father with one son, when the son is lost or has departed likewise, who does not know the news, that hope becomes thinner by me.)
A father who has only one son, when his son is lost or has gone away, and he does not receive any news of him, his hope, as I have seen, becomes ever more frail.
प्रसवे चैव नारीणां वृद्धानां पुत्रकारिता। तथा नरेन्द्र धनिनामाशा कृशतरी मया ॥१२-१२६-४२॥
prasave caiva nārīṇāṃ vṛddhānāṃ putrakāritā। tathā narendra dhaninām āśā kṛśatarī mayā ॥12-126-42॥

(At childbirth and indeed for women, for the aged, desire for sons; likewise, O king, for the wealthy, desire is very thin by me.)
At childbirth, women and the aged have a desire for sons; likewise, O king, among the wealthy, desire is very slight, as I have observed.
ऋषभ उवाच॥

[ऋषभ (ṛṣabha) - the sage Ṛṣabha; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]
(The sage Ṛṣabha said;)
Ṛṣabha said:
एतच्छ्रुत्वा ततो राजन्स राजा सावरोधनः। संस्पृश्य पादौ शिरसा निपपात द्विजर्षभे ॥१२-१२६-४३॥
etat-śrutvā tato rājan sa rājā sāvarodhnaḥ। saṃspṛśya pādau śirasā nipapāta dvijarṣabhe ॥12-126-43॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ततः (tataḥ) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; सः (saḥ) - he; राजा (rājā) - the king; सावरोधनः (sāvarodhnaḥ) - with his women; संस्पृश्य (saṃspṛśya) - having touched; पादौ (pādau) - the feet; शिरसा (śirasā) - with (his) head; निपपात (nipapāta) - fell down; द्विजर्षभे (dvijarṣabhe) - to the best of the twice-born (brāhmaṇa);]
(Having heard this, then, O king, that king with his women, having touched the feet with (his) head, fell down to the best of the twice-born.)
O king, upon hearing this, that king, accompanied by his women, bowed down and touched the feet of the foremost brāhmaṇa with his head.

The king said.
प्रसादये त्वा भगवन्पुत्रेणेच्छामि सङ्गतिम्। वृणीष्व च वरं विप्र यमिच्छसि यथाविधि ॥१२-१२६-४४॥
prasādaye tvā bhagavanputreṇecchāmi saṅgatim। vṛṇīṣva ca varaṃ vipra yamicchasi yathāvidhi ॥12-126-44॥

(I propitiate you, O venerable one, with (my) son; I desire union. And choose, O Brāhmaṇa, the boon which you desire, according to rule.)
I respectfully approach you, O revered one, with my son, seeking union. And, O Brāhmaṇa, choose whatever boon you wish, as is proper.
ऋषभ उवाच॥

Ṛṣabha said.
अब्रवीच्च हि तं वाक्यं राजा राजीवलोचनः। सत्यमेतद्यथा विप्र त्वयोक्तं नास्त्यतो मृषा ॥१२-१२६-४५॥
abravīc ca hi taṃ vākyaṃ rājā rājīvalocanaḥ। satyam etad yathā vipra tvayoktaṃ nāsty ato mṛṣā ॥12-126-45॥
[अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke; (from √brū, to speak; past tense, 3rd person singular); च (ca) - and; हि (hi) - indeed; तं (taṃ) - that; वाक्यम् (vākyaṃ) - speech; statement; राजा (rājā) - king; राजीवलोचनः (rājīvalocanaḥ) - lotus-eyed; (rājīva = lotus, locana = eyed); सत्यं (satyaṃ) - truth; true; एतत् (etat) - this; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; विप्र (vipra) - Brāhmaṇa; sage; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; उक्तम् (uktam) - spoken; said; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; अतः (ataḥ) - from this; hence; मृषा (mṛṣā) - false; untrue;]
(And indeed the king, the lotus-eyed, spoke that statement: "This is true, O Brāhmaṇa, just as it has been spoken by you; there is nothing false in this.")
The lotus-eyed king spoke these words: "O Brāhmaṇa, what you have said is true; there is nothing false in it."
ततः प्रहस्य भगवांस्तनुर्धर्मभृतां वरः। पुत्रमस्यानयत्क्षिप्रं तपसा च श्रुतेन च ॥१२-१२६-४६॥
tataḥ prahasya bhagavāṃstanurdharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ। putramasyānayatkṣipraṃ tapasā ca śrutena ca ॥12-126-46॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रहस्य (prahasya) - having smiled; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable one; तनुः (tanuḥ) - the form; धर्मभृताम् (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; पुत्रम् (putram) - the son; अस्य (asya) - of him; अनयत् (anayat) - brought; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; च (ca) - and; श्रुतेन (śrutena) - by knowledge (of the Veda); च (ca) - and;]
(Then, having smiled, the venerable one, the form, the best of the upholders of dharma, quickly brought his son by austerity and by knowledge (of the Veda) and.)
Then, having smiled, the venerable form, the best among the upholders of dharma, quickly brought his son by means of austerity and Vedic knowledge.
तं समानाय्य पुत्रं तु तदोपालभ्य पार्थिवम्। आत्मानं दर्शयामास धर्मं धर्मभृतां वरः ॥१२-१२६-४७॥
taṃ samānāyya putraṃ tu tadopālabhya pārthivam। ātmānaṃ darśayāmāsa dharmaṃ dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ ॥12-126-47॥
[तं (taṃ) - him; समानाय्य (samānāyya) - having brought together; पुत्रं (putraṃ) - son; तु (tu) - but; तत् (tat) - then; उपालभ्य (upālabhya) - having reproached; पार्थिवम् (pārthivam) - the king; आत्मानं (ātmānaṃ) - himself; दर्शयामास (darśayāmāsa) - showed; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - righteousness; धर्मभृतां (dharmabhṛtāṃ) - of the upholders of dharma; वरः (varaḥ) - the best;]
(Having brought him, his son, but then having reproached the king, he, the best of the upholders of dharma, showed himself as righteousness.)
Having brought his son and then reproaching the king, the best among the upholders of dharma revealed himself as the embodiment of righteousness.
संदर्शयित्वा चात्मानं दिव्यमद्भुतदर्शनम्। विपाप्मा विगतक्रोधश्चचार वनमन्तिकात् ॥१२-१२६-४८॥
sandarśayitvā cātmānaṃ divyamadbhutadarśanam। vipāpmā vigatakrodhaścacāra vanamantikāt ॥12-126-48॥
[संदर्शयित्वा (sandarśayitvā) - having shown; (from root dṛś, with prefix sam-, causative, absolutive) च (ca) - and; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; अद्भुतदर्शनम् (adbhutadarśanam) - of wonderful appearance; विपाप्मा (vipāpmā) - free from sin; विगतक्रोधः (vigatakrodhaḥ) - devoid of anger; च (ca) - and; अचार (cacāra) - moved; (from root car, past tense) वनम् (vanam) - forest; अन्तिकात् (antikāt) - from the vicinity;]
(Having shown himself of divine and wonderful appearance, free from sin and devoid of anger, he moved from the vicinity of the forest.)
After revealing himself in a divine and wondrous form, free from sin and anger, he departed from the edge of the forest.
एतद्दृष्टं मया राजंस्ततश्च वचनं श्रुतम्। आशामपनयस्वाशु ततः कृशतरीमिमाम् ॥१२-१२६-४९॥
etaddṛṣṭaṃ mayā rājaṃstataśca vacanaṃ śrutam। āśām apanayasvāśu tataḥ kṛśatarīm imām ॥12-126-49॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; दृष्टं (dṛṣṭam) - seen; मया (mayā) - by me; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ततः (tataḥ) - then; च (ca) - and; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - heard; आशाम् (āśām) - hope; अपनय (apanaya) - remove; स्व (svā) - your; आशु (āśu) - quickly; ततः (tataḥ) - then; कृशतरīm (kṛśatarīm) - very weak; इमाम् (imām) - this;]
(This was seen by me, O king, and then the speech was heard. Remove your hope quickly, then this very weak (hope).)
O king, I have seen this and then heard the words. Quickly abandon this frail hope of yours.
भीष्म उवाच॥

स तत्रोक्तो महाराज ऋषभेण महात्मना। सुमित्रोऽपनयत्क्षिप्रमाशां कृशतरीं तदा ॥१२-१२६-५०॥
sa tatro'kto mahārāja ṛṣabheṇa mahātmanā। sumitro'panayatkṣipramāśāṃ kṛśatarīṃ tadā ॥12-126-50॥
[स (sa) - he; तत्र (tatra) - there; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - was addressed; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; ऋषभेण (ṛṣabheṇa) - by Ṛṣabha; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one; सुमित्रः (sumitraḥ) - Sumitra; अपनयत् (apanayat) - removed; क्षिप्रम् (kṣipram) - quickly; आशाम् (āśām) - hope; कृशतरīm् (kṛśatarīm) - very feeble; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(He was addressed there, O great king, by Ṛṣabha, the great-souled one. Sumitra quickly removed the very feeble hope then.)
There, O great king, Ṛṣabha, the great-souled one, addressed him. Then Sumitra quickly dispelled the faint hope.
एवं त्वमपि कौन्तेय श्रुत्वा वाणीमिमां मम। स्थिरो भव यथा राजन्हिमवानचलोत्तमः ॥१२-१२६-५१॥
evaṃ tvam api kaunteya śrutvā vāṇīm imāṃ mama। sthiro bhava yathā rājan himavān acalottamaḥ ॥12-126-51॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अपि (api) - also; कौन्तेय (kaunteya) - O son of Kunti; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; वाणीम् (vāṇīm) - speech; इमाम् (imām) - this; मम (mama) - my; स्थिरः (sthiraḥ) - firm; भव (bhava) - be; यथा (yathā) - as; राजन् (rājan) - O king; हिमवान् (himavān) - Himalaya; अचल-उत्तमः (acala-uttamaḥ) - the best of mountains;]
(Thus you also, O son of Kunti, having heard this my speech, be firm as the Himalaya, O king, the best of mountains.)
Therefore, O son of Kunti, after hearing these words of mine, remain steadfast like the Himalaya, O king, the foremost of mountains.
त्वं हि द्रष्टा च श्रोता च कृच्छ्रेष्वर्थकृतेष्विह। श्रुत्वा मम महाराज न सन्तप्तुमिहार्हसि ॥१२-१२६-५२॥
tvaṃ hi draṣṭā ca śrotā ca kṛcchreṣv artha-kṛteṣv iha। śrutvā mama mahārāja na santaptum ihārhasi ॥12-126-52॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हि (hi) - indeed; द्रष्टा (draṣṭā) - seer; च (ca) - and; श्रोता (śrotā) - hearer; च (ca) - and; कृच्छ्रेषु (kṛcchreṣu) - in difficulties; अर्थकृतेषु (artha-kṛteṣu) - for the sake of purpose; इह (iha) - here; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; मम (mama) - my; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; न (na) - not; सन्तप्तुम् (santaptum) - to be distressed; इह (iha) - here; अर्हसि (arhasi) - you ought;]
(You indeed are the seer and the hearer, here in difficulties and for the sake of purpose; having heard my (words), O great king, you ought not to be distressed here.)
You are truly both the observer and the listener in these difficult situations and for the sake of purpose here; having heard my words, O great king, you should not be distressed here.
