स वै क्षारकमादाय द्विजान्हत्वा वने सदा। चकार विक्रयं तेषां पतङ्गानां नराधिप ॥१२-१४१-१३॥
sa vai kṣārakam ādāya dvijān hatvā vane sadā। cakāra vikrayaṃ teṣāṃ pataṅgānāṃ narādhipa ॥12-141-13॥

एवं तु वर्तमानस्य तस्य वृत्तिं दुरात्मनः। अगमत्सुमहान्कालो न चाधर्ममबुध्यत ॥१२-१४१-१४॥
evaṃ tu vartamānasya tasya vṛttiṃ durātmanaḥ। agamatsumahānkālo na cādharmamabudhyata ॥12-141-14॥

तस्य भार्यासहायस्य रममाणस्य शाश्वतम्। दैवयोगविमूढस्य नान्या वृत्तिररोचत ॥१२-१४१-१५॥
tasya bhāryāsahāyasya ramamāṇasya śāśvatam। daivayogavimūḍhasya nānyā vṛttirarocata ॥12-141-15॥

tato dhārākule loke sambhramannaṣṭacētanaḥ। śītārttastad vanaṃ sarvam ākulēnāntarātmanā ॥12-141-19॥

पक्षिणो वातवेगेन हता लीनास्तदाभवन्। मृगाः सिंहा वराहाश्च स्थलान्याश्रित्य तस्थिरे ॥१२-१४१-२१॥
pakṣiṇo vātavegena hatā līnāstadābhavan। mṛgāḥ siṃhā varāhāśca sthalānyāśritya tasthire ॥12-141-21॥

महतावातवर्षेण त्रासितास्ते वनौकसः। भयार्ताश्च क्षुधार्ताश्च बभ्रमुः सहिता वने ॥१२-१४१-२२॥
mahatā vātavarṣeṇa trāsitās te vanaukasaḥ। bhayārtāś ca kṣudhārtāś ca babhramuḥ sahitā vane ॥12-141-22॥

(Frightened by the great wind and rain, those forest-dwellers, afflicted by fear and afflicted by hunger, wandered together in the forest.)
Driven by the great storm of wind and rain, those forest-dwellers, terrified and hungry, wandered together through the forest.
स तु शीतहतैर्गात्रैर्जगामैव न तस्थिवान्। सोऽपश्यद्वनषण्डेषु मेघनीलं वनस्पतिम् ॥१२-१४१-२३॥
sa tu śītahatair gātrair jagāmaiva na tasthivān। so'paśyad vanaṣaṇḍeṣu meghanīlaṃ vanaspatim ॥12-141-23॥

(He but with cold-stricken limbs went indeed, not stood. He saw in forest-groves a cloud-dark tree.)

ताराढ्यं कुमुदाकारमाकाशं निर्मलं च ह। मेघैर्मुक्तं नभो दृष्ट्वा लुब्धकः शीतविह्वलः ॥१२-१४१-२४॥

दिशोऽवलोकयामास वेलां चैव दुरात्मवान्। दूरे ग्रामनिवेशश्च तस्माद्देशादिति प्रभो ॥ कृतबुद्धिर्वने तस्मिन्वस्तुं तां रजनीं तदा ॥१२-१४१-२५॥
diśo'valokayāmāsa velāṃ caiva durātmavān। dūre grāmaniveśaś ca tasmād deśād iti prabho ॥ kṛtabuddhir vane tasmin vastuṃ tāṃ rajanīṃ tadā ॥12-141-25॥

(He, the wicked-minded one, indeed observed the directions and the boundary. O lord, the village settlement was at a distance from that region, thus. Having made up his mind, then, he stayed that night there in the forest.)

सोऽञ्जलिं प्रयतः कृत्वा वाक्यमाह वनस्पतिम्। शरणं यामि यान्यस्मिन्दैवतानीह भारत ॥१२-१४१-२६॥
so'ñjaliṃ prayataḥ kṛtvā vākyam āha vanaspatim। śaraṇaṃ yāmi yāny asmin daivatāniha bhārata ॥12-141-26॥

(He, having made (his) palms joined with devotion, said speech to the tree: "I go for refuge to those deities which are here in this, O Bhārata.")
