अथ वृक्षस्य शाखायां विहङ्गः ससुहृज्जनः। दीर्घकालोषितो राजंस्तत्र चित्रतनूरुहः ॥१२-१४२-१॥
atha vṛkṣasya śākhāyāṃ vihaṅgaḥ sasuhr̥jjanaḥ। dīrghakāloṣito rājaṃstatra citratanūruhaḥ ॥12-142-1॥
[अथ (atha) - now; then; वृक्षस्य (vṛkṣasya) - of the tree; शाखायाम् (śākhāyām) - on the branch; विहङ्गः (vihaṅgaḥ) - bird; ससुहृज्जनः (sasuhr̥jjanaḥ) - with friendly people; with companions; दीर्घकालोषितः (dīrghakāloṣitaḥ) - having dwelt for a long time; राजन् (rājan) - O king; तत्र (tatra) - there; चित्रतनूरुहः (citratanūruhaḥ) - with a wondrous body of feathers; remarkable-bodied bird;]
(Now, on the branch of the tree, a bird with friendly companions, having dwelt for a long time, O king, there (was) a bird with a wondrous body of feathers.)
Then, O king, on the branch of the tree, there was a bird with friendly companions, who had lived there for a long time, and had a remarkable body of feathers.
तस्य काल्यं गता भार्या चरितुं नाभ्यवर्तत। प्राप्तां च रजनीं दृष्ट्वा स पक्षी पर्यतप्यत ॥१२-१४२-२॥
tasya kālyaṃ gatā bhāryā carituṃ nābhyavartata। prāptāṃ ca rajanīṃ dṛṣṭvā sa pakṣī paryatapyata ॥12-142-2॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; काल्यं (kālyam) - in the morning; गता (gatā) - gone; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; चरितुं (caritum) - to wander; न (na) - not; अभ्यवर्तत (abhyavartata) - returned; प्राप्तां (prāptām) - arrived; च (ca) - and; रजनीं (rajanīm) - night; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; स (sa) - he; पक्षी (pakṣī) - bird; पर्यतप्यत (paryatapyata) - was tormented;]
(Of him in the morning gone wife to wander not returned. Arrived and night having seen he bird was tormented.)
In the morning, his wife went out to wander and did not return. When he saw that night had arrived, the bird was tormented.
वातवर्षं महच्चासीन्न चागच्छति मे प्रिया। किं नु तत्कारणं येन साद्यापि न निवर्तते ॥१२-१४२-३॥
vātavarṣaṃ mahaccāsīn na cāgacchati me priyā। kiṃ nu tatkāraṇaṃ yena sādyāpi na nivartate ॥12-142-3॥
[वातवर्षम् (vātavarṣam) - wind and rain; (vāta - wind; varṣa - rain; -am - accusative singular neuter;) महत् (mahat) - great; (mahat - great;) आसीत् (āsīt) - was; (āsīt - was;) न (na) - not; (na - not;) च (ca) - and; (ca - and;) आगच्छति (āgacchati) - comes; (āgacchati - comes;) मे (me) - to me; (me - to me;) प्रिया (priyā) - beloved; (priyā - beloved;) किम् (kim) - what; (kim - what;) नु (nu) - indeed; (nu - indeed;) तत् (tat) - that; (tat - that;) कारणम् (kāraṇam) - cause; (kāraṇam - cause;) येन (yena) - by which; (yena - by which;) सा (sā) - she; (sā - she;) अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; (adyāpi - even today;) न (na) - not; (na - not;) निवर्तते (nivartate) - returns; (nivartate - returns;);]
(Wind and rain was great, and my beloved does not come to me. What indeed is that cause by which even today she does not return?)
There was a great storm of wind and rain, and my beloved has not come to me. What could be the reason that even today she has not returned?
अपि स्वस्ति भवेत्तस्याः प्रियाया मम कानने। तया विरहितं हीदं शून्यमद्य गृहं मम ॥१२-१४२-४॥
api svasti bhavet tasyāḥ priyāyā mama kānane। tayā virahitaṃ hīdaṃ śūnyam adya gṛhaṃ mama ॥12-142-4॥
[अपि (api) - indeed; स्वस्ति (svasti) - well-being; भवेत् (bhavet) - may it be; तस्याः (tasyāḥ) - of her; प्रियायाः (priyāyāḥ) - beloved; मम (mama) - my; कानने (kānane) - in the forest; तया (tayā) - by her; विरहितं (virahitaṃ) - bereft; हि (hi) - indeed; इदं (idaṃ) - this; शून्यम् (śūnyam) - empty; अद्य (adya) - today; गृहम् (gṛham) - house; मम (mama) - my;]
(Indeed, may there be well-being for her, my beloved, in the forest. By her being bereft, indeed, this house of mine is empty today.)
Indeed, may my beloved have well-being in the forest. Because she is absent, my house feels empty today.
यदि सा रक्तनेत्रान्ता चित्राङ्गी मधुरस्वरा। अद्य नाभ्येति मे कान्ता न कार्यं जीवितेन मे ॥१२-१४२-५॥
yadi sā raktanetrāntā citrāṅgī madhurasvarā। adya nābhyeti me kāntā na kāryaṃ jīvitena me ॥12-142-5॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; सा (sā) - she; रक्तनेत्रान्ता (raktanetrāntā) - having red eye-corners; चित्राङ्गी (citrāṅgī) - having variegated limbs; मधुरस्वरा (madhurasvarā) - sweet-voiced; अद्य (adya) - today; न (na) - not; अभ्येति (abhyeti) - comes near; मे (me) - to me; कान्ता (kāntā) - beloved; न (na) - not; कार्यं (kāryaṃ) - purpose; जीवितेन (jīvitena) - with life; मे (me) - for me;]
(If she, with red eye-corners, variegated limbs, and sweet voice, does not come near me today, my beloved, then there is no purpose for me with life.)
If my beloved, who has red eye-corners, variegated limbs, and a sweet voice, does not come to me today, then my life has no purpose.
पतिधर्मरता साध्वी प्राणेभ्योऽपि गरीयसी। सा हि श्रान्तं क्षुधार्तं च जानीते मां तपस्विनी ॥१२-१४२-६॥
patidharmaratā sādhvī prāṇebhyo'pi garīyasī। sā hi śrāntaṃ kṣudhārtaṃ ca jānīte māṃ tapasvinī ॥12-142-6॥
[पतिधर्मरता (patidharmaratā) - engaged in the duties of a wife; साध्वी (sādhvī) - virtuous woman; प्राणेभ्यः (prāṇebhyaḥ) - than life-breaths; अपि (api) - even; गरीयसी (garīyasī) - more weighty; सा (sā) - she; हि (hi) - indeed; श्रान्तम् (śrāntam) - tired; क्षुधार्तम् (kṣudhārtam) - afflicted by hunger; च (ca) - and; जानीते (jānīte) - knows; माम् (mām) - me; तपस्विनी (tapasvinī) - ascetic woman;]
(A virtuous woman engaged in the duties of a wife is more weighty even than life-breaths. She indeed, the ascetic woman, knows me when I am tired and afflicted by hunger.)
A virtuous wife devoted to her husband's duties is more precious than life itself. Such an ascetic woman truly knows me, even when I am weary and hungry.
अनुरक्ता हिता चैव स्निग्धा चैव पतिव्रता। यस्य वै तादृशी भार्या धन्यः स मनुजो भुवि ॥१२-१४२-७॥
anuraktā hitā caiva snigdhā caiva pativratā। yasya vai tādṛśī bhāryā dhanyaḥ sa manujo bhuvi॥12-142-7॥
[अनुरक्ता (anuraktā) - deeply attached; हिता (hitā) - beneficial; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; स्निग्धा (snigdhā) - affectionate; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; पतिव्रता (pativratā) - devoted to husband; यस्य (yasya) - whose; वै (vai) - indeed; तादृशी (tādṛśī) - such; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; धन्यः (dhanyaḥ) - blessed; स (sa) - he; मनुजः (manujaḥ) - man; भुवि (bhuvi) - on earth;]
(Deeply attached, beneficial, and indeed affectionate, and indeed devoted to husband; whose indeed such wife, blessed, he, man, on earth.)
A man on earth whose wife is deeply attached, beneficial, affectionate, and devoted to her husband is truly blessed.
भार्या हि परमो नाथः पुरुषस्येह पठ्यते। असहायस्य लोकेऽस्मिँल्लोकयात्रासहायिनी ॥१२-१४२-८॥
bhāryā hi paramo nāthaḥ puruṣasyeha paṭhyate। asahāyasya loke'smiñlokayātrāsahāyinī ॥12-142-8॥
[भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; हि (hi) - indeed; परमः (paramaḥ) - supreme; नाथः (nāthaḥ) - protector; पुरुषस्य (puruṣasya) - of a man; इह (iha) - here; पठ्यते (paṭhyate) - is said; असहायस्य (asahāyasya) - of the helpless; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; लोकयात्रा (lokayātrā) - journey of life; सहायिनी (sahāyinī) - helper (feminine);]
(Wife indeed supreme protector of a man here is said; of the helpless in the world in this journey of life helper (feminine).)
It is said that the wife is indeed the supreme protector of a man here; for the helpless, in this world, she is the helper in the journey of life.
तथा रोगाभिभूतस्य नित्यं कृच्छ्रगतस्य च। नास्ति भार्यासमं किञ्चिन्नरस्यार्तस्य भेषजम् ॥१२-१४२-९॥
tathā rogābhibhūtasya nityaṃ kṛcchragatasya ca। nāsti bhāryāsamaṃ kiñcin narasyārtasya bheṣajam ॥12-142-9॥
[तथा (tathā) - in that way; रोग-अभिभूतस्य (roga-abhibhūtasya) - of one afflicted by disease; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; कृच्छ्र-गतस्य (kṛcchra-gatasya) - of one fallen into distress; च (ca) - and; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; भार्या-समं (bhāryā-samaṃ) - equal to a wife; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; नरस्य (narasya) - for a man; आर्तस्य (ārtasya) - afflicted; भेषजम् (bheṣajam) - remedy;]
(In that way, for one afflicted by disease, always, for one fallen into distress and, there is not anything equal to a wife as a remedy for an afflicted man.)
Similarly, for a man who is always afflicted by disease or distress, there is no remedy equal to a wife.
नास्ति भार्यासमो बन्धुर्नास्ति भार्यासमा गतिः। नास्ति भार्यासमो लोके सहायो धर्मसाधनः ॥१२-१४२-१०॥
nāsti bhāryāsamo bandhur nāsti bhāryāsamā gatiḥ। nāsti bhāryāsamo loke sahāyo dharmasādhanaḥ ॥12-142-10॥
[नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; समः (samaḥ) - equal; बन्धुः (bandhuḥ) - relative; नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; समा (samā) - equal; गतिः (gatiḥ) - refuge; नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; समः (samaḥ) - equal; लोके (loke) - in the world; सहायः (sahāyaḥ) - helper; धर्म (dharma) - righteousness; साधनः (sādhanaḥ) - means;]
(There is no relative equal to the wife; there is no refuge equal to the wife. There is no helper in the world equal to the wife as a means for righteousness.)
There is no relative like the wife; there is no support like the wife. In this world, there is no helper for the pursuit of righteousness equal to the wife.
एवं विलपतस्तस्य द्विजस्यार्तस्य तत्र वै। गृहीता शकुनघ्नेन भार्या शुश्राव भारतीम् ॥१२-१४२-११॥
evaṃ vilapatastasya dvijasyārtasya tatra vai। gṛhītā śakunaghnena bhāryā śuśrāva bhāratīm ॥12-142-11॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विलपतः (vilapataḥ) - lamenting; तस्य (tasya) - of him; द्विजस्य (dvijasya) - of the twice-born; आर्तस्य (ārtasya) - of the afflicted; तत्र (tatra) - there; वै (vai) - indeed; गृहीता (gṛhītā) - seized; शकुनघ्नेन (śakunaghnena) - by the bird-killer; भार्या (bhāryā) - wife; शुश्राव (śuśrāva) - heard; भारतीम् (bhāratīm) - the speech;]
(Thus, as he, the afflicted twice-born, was lamenting there indeed, the wife, seized by the bird-killer, heard the speech.)
As the afflicted twice-born was lamenting in that place, the wife who had been seized by the bird-killer heard his words.
न सा स्त्रीत्यभिभाषा स्याद्यस्या भर्ता न तुष्यति। अग्निसाक्षिकमप्येतद्भर्ता हि शरणं स्त्रियः ॥१२-१४२-१२॥
na sā strīty abhibhāṣā syād yasyā bhartā na tuṣyati। agnisākṣikam apy etad bhartā hi śaraṇaṃ striyaḥ ॥12-142-12॥
[न (na) - not; सा (sā) - she; स्त्री (strī) - woman; इति (iti) - thus; अभिभाषा (abhibhāṣā) - designation; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; यस्या (yasyā) - whose; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; न (na) - not; तुष्यति (tuṣyati) - is pleased; अग्नि (agni) - fire; साक्षिकम् (sākṣikam) - witnessed; अपि (api) - even; एतत् (etat) - this; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; हि (hi) - indeed; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; स्त्रियः (striyaḥ) - of a woman;]
(Not she 'woman' thus designation should be whose husband is not pleased. Even if this is witnessed by fire, the husband indeed is the refuge of a woman.)
She should not be called a 'woman' whose husband is not pleased with her. Even if the marriage is witnessed by fire, the husband is indeed the refuge of a woman.
इति सञ्चिन्त्य दुःखार्ता भर्तारं दुःखितं तदा। कपोती लुब्धकेनाथ यत्ता वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१२-१४२-१३॥
iti sañcintya duḥkhārtā bhartāraṃ duḥkhitaṃ tadā। kapotī lubdhakenātha yattā vacanamabravīt ॥12-142-13॥
[इति (iti) - thus; सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having considered; दुःखार्ता (duḥkhārtā) - afflicted by sorrow; भर्तारं (bhartāram) - husband; दुःखितं (duḥkhitam) - distressed; तदा (tadā) - then; कपोती (kapotī) - the female dove; लुब्धकेन (lubdhakena) - by the hunter; अथ (atha) - then; यत्ता (yattā) - prepared; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Thus, having considered, afflicted by sorrow, her husband distressed, then the female dove, by the hunter, then, prepared, speech spoke.)
Thus, having thought in this way, the sorrowful dove, seeing her husband distressed, then, being prepared, spoke these words to the hunter.
हन्त वक्ष्यामि ते श्रेयः श्रुत्वा च कुरु तत्तथा। शरणागतसन्त्राता भव कान्त विशेषतः ॥१२-१४२-१४॥
hanta vakṣyāmi te śreyaḥ śrutvā ca kuru tattathā। śaraṇāgatasantrātā bhava kānta viśeṣataḥ ॥12-142-14॥
[हन्त (hanta) - indeed; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall say; ते (te) - to you; श्रेयः (śreyaḥ) - the best; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; च (ca) - and; कुरु (kuru) - do; तत्तथा (tattathā) - that thus; शरणागतसन्त्राता (śaraṇāgatasantrātā) - protector of those who have sought refuge; भव (bhava) - become; कान्त (kānta) - O beloved; विशेषतः (viśeṣataḥ) - especially;]
(Indeed, I shall say to you the best; having heard, and do that thus. Become especially the protector of those who have sought refuge, O beloved.)
Indeed, I will tell you what is best; after hearing, do exactly that. O beloved, especially become the protector of those who have sought refuge.
एष शाकुनिकः शेते तव वासं समाश्रितः। शीतार्तश्च क्षुधार्तश्च पूजामस्मै प्रयोजय ॥१२-१४२-१५॥
eṣa śākunikaḥ śete tava vāsaṃ samāśritaḥ। śītārtaś ca kṣudhārtaś ca pūjām asmai prayojaya ॥12-142-15॥
[एष (eṣa) - this (man); शाकुनिकः (śākunikaḥ) - bird-catcher; शेते (śete) - lies; तव (tava) - your; वासं (vāsaṃ) - dwelling; समाश्रितः (samāśritaḥ) - having taken refuge; शीतार्तः (śītārtaḥ) - afflicted by cold; च (ca) - and; क्षुधार्तः (kṣudhārtaḥ) - afflicted by hunger; च (ca) - and; पूजाम् (pūjām) - honor; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; प्रयोजय (prayojaya) - cause to be offered;]
(This bird-catcher lies having taken refuge in your dwelling; afflicted by cold and afflicted by hunger; cause honor to be offered to him.)
This bird-catcher, having taken refuge in your dwelling, lies here afflicted by cold and hunger; therefore, offer him hospitality.
यो हि कश्चिद्द्विजं हन्याद्गां वा लोकस्य मातरम्। शरणागतं च यो हन्यात्तुल्यं तेषां च पातकम् ॥१२-१४२-१६॥
yo hi kaścid dvijaṃ hanyād gāṃ vā lokasya mātaram | śaraṇāgataṃ ca yo hanyāt tulyaṃ teṣāṃ ca pātakam ||12-142-16||
[यः (yaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; द्विजम् (dvijam) - a twice-born; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; गाम् (gām) - a cow; वा (vā) - or; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; मातरम् (mātaram) - the mother; शरणागतम् (śaraṇāgatam) - one who has taken refuge; च (ca) - and; यः (yaḥ) - who; हन्यात् (hanyāt) - would kill; तुल्यम् (tulyam) - equal; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; च (ca) - and; पातकम् (pātakam) - sin;]
(Who indeed anyone would kill a twice-born, or a cow, or the mother of the world; and who would kill one who has taken refuge, equal is the sin of them.)
Whoever kills a twice-born, a cow, the mother of the world, or one who has sought refuge—the sin of all these is considered equal.
यास्माकं विहिता वृत्तिः कापोती जातिधर्मतः। सा न्याय्यात्मवता नित्यं त्वद्विधेनाभिवर्तितुम् ॥१२-१४२-१७॥
yāsmākaṃ vihitā vṛttiḥ kāpotī jātidharmataḥ। sā nyāyyātmavatā nityaṃ tvadvidhenābhivartitum ॥12-142-17॥
[यास्माकं (yāsmākam) - of us; विहिता (vihitā) - ordained; वृत्तिः (vṛttiḥ) - livelihood; कापोती (kāpotī) - of a female pigeon; जातिधर्मतः (jātidharmataḥ) - by the law of the species; सा (sā) - that; न्याय्य (nyāyya) - just; आत्मवता (ātmavatā) - by one possessing self-control; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; त्वद्विधेन (tvadvidhena) - by one like you; अभिवर्तितुम् (abhivartitum) - to be followed;]
(The livelihood ordained for us, that of a female pigeon, by the law of the species, that is just, is always to be followed by one possessing self-control, by one like you.)
The way of life ordained for us as female pigeons, according to the law of our species, is just and should always be followed by one like you, who possesses self-control.
यस्तु धर्मं यथाशक्ति गृहस्थो ह्यनुवर्तते। स प्रेत्य लभते लोकानक्षयानिति शुश्रुम ॥१२-१४२-१८॥
yastu dharmaṃ yathāśakti gṛhastho hyanuvartate। sa pretya labhate lokānakṣayāniti śuśruma ॥12-142-18॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - but; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - duty; यथा (yathā) - according to; शक्ति (śakti) - ability; गृहस्थः (gṛhasthaḥ) - householder; हि (hi) - indeed; अनुवर्तते (anuvartate) - follows; सः (saḥ) - he; प्रेत्य (pretya) - having departed; लभते (labhate) - obtains; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अक्षयान् (akṣayān) - imperishable; इति (iti) - thus; शुश्रुम (śuśruma) - we have heard;]
(But who, the duty according to ability, the householder indeed follows, he having departed obtains worlds imperishable, thus we have heard.)
But the householder who follows his duty according to his ability, he, after death, attains imperishable worlds — thus we have heard.
स त्वं सन्तानवानद्य पुत्रवानपि च द्विज। तत्स्वदेहे दयां त्यक्त्वा धर्मार्थौ परिगृह्य वै ॥ पूजामस्मै प्रयुङ्क्ष्व त्वं प्रीयेतास्य मनो यथा ॥१२-१४२-१९॥
sa tvaṃ santānavān adya putravān api ca dvija। tat svadehe dayāṃ tyaktvā dharmārthau parigṛhya vai ॥ pūjām asmai prayuṅkṣva tvaṃ prīyetāsya mano yathā ॥12-142-19॥
[स (sa) - he; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; सन्तानवान् (santānavān) - having progeny; अद्य (adya) - today; पुत्रवान् (putravān) - having sons; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; द्विज (dvija) - twice-born (Brahmin); तत् (tat) - that; स्वदेहे (svadehe) - in your own body; दयाम् (dayām) - compassion; त्यक्त्वा (tyaktvā) - having abandoned; धर्मार्थौ (dharmārthau) - dharma and artha; परिगृह्य (parigṛhya) - having taken up; वै (vai) - indeed; पूजाम् (pūjām) - worship; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; प्रयुङ्क्ष्व (prayuṅkṣva) - you should perform; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; प्रीयेत (prīyeta) - may be pleased; अस्य (asya) - his; मनो (mano) - mind; यथा (yathā) - as; १२-१४२-१९ (12-142-19) - 12-142-19;]
(He, you, having progeny today, having sons also and, O twice-born, that in your own body, having abandoned compassion, having taken up dharma and artha indeed, worship to him you should perform, you, may his mind be pleased as (desired).)
Therefore, O twice-born, you, who today have progeny and sons, abandoning compassion for your own body and upholding dharma and artha, should perform worship for him so that his mind may be pleased as desired.
इति सा शकुनी वाक्यं क्षारकस्था तपस्विनी। अतिदुःखान्विता प्रोच्य भर्तारं समुदैक्षत ॥१२-१४२-२०॥
iti sā śakunī vākyaṃ kṣārakasthā tapasvinī। atiduḥkhānvitā procya bhartāraṃ samudaikṣata ॥12-142-20॥
[इति (iti) - thus; सा (sā) - she; शकुनी (śakunī) - the bird; वाक्यं (vākyaṃ) - words; क्षारकस्था (kṣārakasthā) - standing on the salt-pan; तपस्विनी (tapasvinī) - the ascetic woman; अतिदुःखान्विता (atiduḥkhānvitā) - afflicted with great sorrow; प्रोच्य (procya) - having spoken; भर्तारं (bhartāraṃ) - her husband; समुदैक्षत (samudaikṣata) - looked at;]
(Thus she, the bird, the ascetic woman standing on the salt-pan, afflicted with great sorrow, having spoken words, looked at her husband.)
Thus, the ascetic woman, like a bird standing on the salt-pan, deeply afflicted, spoke these words and looked at her husband.
स पत्न्या वचनं श्रुत्वा धर्मयुक्तिसमन्वितम्। हर्षेण महता युक्तो बाष्पव्याकुललोचनः ॥१२-१४२-२१॥
sa patnyā vacanaṃ śrutvā dharmayuktisamanvitam। harṣeṇa mahatā yukto bāṣpavyākulalocanaḥ ॥12-142-21॥

तं वै शाकुनिकं दृष्ट्वा विधिदृष्टेन कर्मणा। पूजयामास यत्नेन स पक्षी पक्षिजीविनम् ॥१२-१४२-२२॥
taṃ vai śākunikaṃ dṛṣṭvā vidhidṛṣṭena karmaṇā। pūjayāmāsa yatnena sa pakṣī pakṣijīvinam ॥12-142-22॥

(Him indeed the fowler having seen, by action prescribed by rule, honored with effort, he (the) bird (honored) the bird-living (fowler).)

उवाच च स्वागतं ते ब्रूहि किं करवाण्यहम्। सन्तापश्च न कर्तव्यः स्वगृहे वर्तते भवान् ॥१२-१४२-२३॥

(Said and welcome to you, speak what shall I do, I. Distress and not should be done; in own house exists you.)
He said, "Welcome to you! Tell me, what shall I do? You should not be distressed; you are in your own house."
तद्ब्रवीतु भवान्क्षिप्रं किं करोमि किमिच्छसि। प्रणयेन ब्रवीमि त्वां त्वं हि नः शरणागतः ॥१२-१४२-२४॥
tadbravītu bhavān kṣipraṃ kiṃ karomi kim icchasi। praṇayena bravīmi tvāṃ tvaṃ hi naḥ śaraṇāgataḥ ॥12-142-24॥

(That let you say quickly what I do, what you desire. With affection I say to you, you indeed are our one who has taken refuge.)
Please tell me quickly what I should do, what you desire. I say this to you with affection, for you have indeed sought our refuge.
शरणागतस्य कर्तव्यमातिथ्यमिह यत्नतः। पञ्चयज्ञप्रवृत्तेन गृहस्थेन विशेषतः ॥१२-१४२-२५॥
śaraṇāgatasya kartavyam ātithyam iha yatnataḥ। pañcayajñapravṛttena gṛhasthena viśeṣataḥ॥12-142-25॥

पञ्चयज्ञांस्तु यो मोहान्न करोति गृहाश्रमी। तस्य नायं न च परो लोको भवति धर्मतः ॥१२-१४२-२६॥
pañcayajñāṃstu yo mohānna karoti gṛhāśramī। tasya nāyaṃ na ca paro loko bhavati dharmataḥ ॥12-142-26॥

(But the householder who, out of delusion, does not perform the five sacrifices, for him neither this world nor the other world exists according to dharma.)
But if a householder, out of delusion, does not perform the five daily sacrifices, then according to dharma, neither this world nor the next belongs to him.
तद्ब्रूहि त्वं सुविस्रब्धो यत्त्वं वाचा वदिष्यसि। तत्करिष्याम्यहं सर्वं मा त्वं शोके मनः कृथाः ॥१२-१४२-२७॥
tadbrūhi tvaṃ suvisrabdho yat tvaṃ vācā vadiṣyasi। tat kariṣyāmi ahaṃ sarvaṃ mā tvaṃ śoke manaḥ kṛthāḥ॥12-142-27॥

(That speak you very confident what you by speech will say; that I will do all; do not you in grief mind make.)
Speak out confidently whatever you say; I will do all that. Do not let your mind be overcome by grief.
तस्य तद्वचनं श्रुत्वा शकुनेर्लुब्धकोऽब्रवीत्। बाधते खलु मा शीतं हिमत्राणं विधीयताम् ॥१२-१४२-२८॥
tasya tadvacanaṃ śrutvā śakuner lubdhako'bravīt। bādhate khalu mā śītaṃ himatrāṇaṃ vidhīyatām ॥12-142-28॥

(Of him that speech having heard, of the bird the hunter said: "It indeed afflicts me, the cold; let protection from snow be arranged.")
Hearing those words of the bird, the hunter said: "This cold is truly troubling me; please arrange some protection from the snow."
एवमुक्तस्ततः पक्षी पर्णान्यास्तीर्य भूतले। यथाशुष्काणि यत्नेन ज्वलनार्थं द्रुतं ययौ ॥१२-१४२-२९॥
evam-uktas-tataḥ pakṣī parṇāny-āstīrya bhūtale | yathā-śuṣkāṇi yatnena jvalanārthaṃ drutaṃ yayau ॥12-142-29॥

(Thus, having been spoken, then the bird, having spread leaves on the ground, as dry (leaves), with effort, for the purpose of burning, quickly went.)
Thus addressed, the bird then spread dry leaves on the ground with effort and quickly went to fetch fire.
स गत्वाङ्गारकर्मान्तं गृहीत्वाग्निमथागमत्। ततः शुष्केषु पर्णेषु पावकं सोऽभ्यदीदिपत् ॥१२-१४२-३०॥
sa gatvāṅgārakarmāntaṃ gṛhītvāgnimathāgamat। tataḥ śuṣkeṣu parṇeṣu pāvakaṃ so'bhyadīdipat ॥12-142-30॥
[स (sa) - he; गत्वा (gatvā) - having gone; अङ्गारकर्मान्तम् (aṅgārakarmāntam) - to the place of charcoal work; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; अग्निमथ (agnimatha) - fire-stick; आगमत् (āgamat) - came; ततः (tataḥ) - then; शुष्केषु (śuṣkeṣu) - in the dry; पर्णेषु (parṇeṣu) - leaves; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire; सः (saḥ) - he; अभ्यदीदिपत् (abhyadīdipat) - kindled; ॥१२-१४२-३०॥ (॥12-142-30॥) - (verse number);]
(He, having gone to the place of charcoal work and having taken the fire-stick, came. Then, in the dry leaves, he kindled the fire.)
He went to the place where charcoal was made, took the fire-stick, and returned. Then he kindled the fire among the dry leaves.
सुसंदीप्तं महत्कृत्वा तमाह शरणागतम्। प्रतापय सुविस्रब्धं स्वगात्राण्यकुतोभयः ॥१२-१४२-३१॥
susandīptaṃ mahatkṛtvā tam āha śaraṇāgatam। pratāpaya suvisrabdhaṃ svagātrāṇy akutobhayaḥ ॥12-142-31॥
[सुसंदीप्तम् (susandīptam) - well-ignited; महत् (mahat) - great; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; तम् (tam) - him; आह (āha) - said; शरणागतम् (śaraṇāgatam) - who had sought refuge; प्रतापय (pratāpaya) - cause to blaze; सुविस्रब्धम् (suvisrabdham) - very confidently; स्वगात्राणि (svagātrāṇi) - one's own limbs; अकुतोभयः (akutobhayaḥ) - one who has no fear from anywhere;]
(Having made (it) well-ignited and great, he said to him who had sought refuge: "Cause your own limbs to blaze very confidently, being fearless from anywhere.")
After making it blaze brightly and greatly, he said to the one who had sought refuge: "Burn your own limbs with full confidence, being fearless from all sides."
स तथोक्तस्तथेत्युक्त्वा लुब्धो गात्राण्यतापयत्। अग्निप्रत्यागतप्राणस्ततः प्राह विहङ्गमम् ॥१२-१४२-३२॥
sa tathoktas tathety uktvā lubdho gātrāṇy atāpayat। agnipratyāgataprāṇas tataḥ prāha vihaṅgamam ॥12-142-32॥
[स (sa) - he; तथा (tathā) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; तथेत्य् (tathety) - 'so be it'; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; लुब्धः (lubdhaḥ) - greedy; गात्राणि (gātrāṇi) - limbs; अतापयत् (atāpayat) - tormented; अग्नि (agni) - fire; प्रत्यागत (pratyāgata) - returned; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ) - life-breath; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; विहङ्गमम् (vihaṅgamam) - the bird;]
(He, thus addressed, having said 'so be it', the greedy one tormented his limbs. With his life-breath returned by fire, then he spoke to the bird.)
Thus addressed, he replied 'so be it', and the greedy man tormented his own body. When his life was restored by the fire, he then spoke to the bird.
दत्तमाहारमिच्छामि त्वया क्षुद्बाधते हि माम्। तद्वचः स प्रतिश्रुत्य वाक्यमाह विहङ्गमः ॥१२-१४२-३३॥
dattam-āhāram-icchāmi tvayā kṣud-bādhate hi mām। tad-vacaḥ sa pratiśrutya vākyam-āha vihaṅgamaḥ ॥12-142-33॥
[दत्तम् (dattam) - given; आहारम् (āhāram) - food; इच्छामि (icchāmi) - I desire; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; क्षुद् (kṣud) - hunger; बाधते (bādhate) - afflicts; हि (hi) - indeed; माम् (mām) - me; तत् (tat) - that; वचः (vacaḥ) - word; सः (sa) - he; प्रतिश्रुत्य (pratiśrutya) - having promised; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - speech; आह (āha) - said; विहङ्गमः (vihaṅgamaḥ) - the bird;]
(Given food I desire by you, hunger indeed afflicts me. That word he having promised, speech said the bird.)
"I desire the food given by you, for hunger indeed afflicts me." Having promised that word, the bird spoke these words.
न मेऽस्ति विभवो येन नाशयामि तव क्षुधाम्। उत्पन्नेन हि जीवामो वयं नित्यं वनौकसः ॥१२-१४२-३४॥
na me'sti vibhavo yena nāśayāmi tava kṣudhām। utpannena hi jīvāmo vayaṃ nityaṃ vanaukasaḥ ॥12-142-34॥
[न (na) - not; मे (me) - to me; अस्ति (asti) - there is; विभवः (vibhavaḥ) - means (resources); येन (yena) - by which; नाशयामि (nāśayāmi) - I destroy; तव (tava) - your; क्षुधाम् (kṣudhām) - hunger; उत्पन्नेन (utpannena) - by what is obtained; हि (hi) - indeed; जीवामः (jīvāmaḥ) - we live; वयम् (vayam) - we; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; वनौकसः (vanaukasaḥ) - forest-dwellers;]
(Not to me there is means by which I destroy your hunger. By what is obtained indeed we live, we always forest-dwellers.)
I do not have the means by which I can satisfy your hunger. We forest-dwellers always live only on what we obtain.
सञ्चयो नास्ति चास्माकं मुनीनामिव कानने। इत्युक्त्वा स तदा तत्र विवर्णवदनोऽभवत् ॥१२-१४२-३५॥
sañcayo nāsti cāsmākaṃ munīnāmiva kānane। ityuktvā sa tadā tatra vivarṇavadano'bhavat ॥12-142-35॥
[सञ्चयः (sañcayaḥ) - accumulation; न (na) - not; अस्ति (asti) - is; च (ca) - and; अस्माकम् (asmākam) - our; मुनीनाम् (munīnām) - of sages; इव (iva) - like; कानने (kānane) - in the forest; इति (iti) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having said; सः (saḥ) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; तत्र (tatra) - there; विवर्णवदनः (vivarṇavadanaḥ) - with pale face; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Accumulation not is and our of sages like in the forest. Thus having said he then there with pale face became.)
There is no accumulation for us, just as for the sages in the forest. Having said this, he then became pale-faced there.
कथं नु खलु कर्तव्यमिति चिन्तापरः सदा। बभूव भरतश्रेष्ठ गर्हयन्वृत्तिमात्मनः ॥१२-१४२-३६॥
kathaṁ nu khalu kartavyam iti cintāparaḥ sadā। babhūva bharataśreṣṭha garhayan vṛttim ātmanaḥ ॥12-142-36॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; नु (nu) - indeed; खलु (khalu) - certainly; कर्तव्यम् (kartavyam) - to be done; इति (iti) - thus; चिन्तापरः (cintāparaḥ) - absorbed in thought; सदा (sadā) - always; बभूव (babhūva) - became; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; गर्हयन् (garhayan) - condemning; वृत्तिम् (vṛttim) - conduct; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of himself;]
(How indeed certainly to be done thus absorbed in thought always became O best of the Bharatas condemning conduct of himself.)
O best of the Bharatas, he was always absorbed in thought, constantly pondering 'How indeed should it be done?', condemning his own conduct.
मुहूर्ताल्लब्धसञ्ज्ञस्तु स पक्षी पक्षिघातकम्। उवाच तर्पयिष्ये त्वां मुहूर्तं प्रतिपालय ॥१२-१४२-३७॥
muhūrtāllabdhasaṃjñastu sa pakṣī pakṣighātakam। uvāca tarpayiṣye tvāṃ muhūrtaṃ pratipālaya ॥12-142-37॥

(Thus having said, with dry leaves he having kindled the sacrificial fire, endowed with great joy, the pigeon again said.)
Having spoken thus, the pigeon, filled with great joy, kindled the sacrificial fire with dry leaves and spoke again.
देवानां च मुनीनां च पितॄणां च महात्मनाम्। श्रुतपूर्वो मया धर्मो महानतिथिपूजने ॥१२-१४२-३९॥
devānāṃ ca munīnāṃ ca pitṝṇāṃ ca mahātmanām। śrutapūrvo mayā dharmo mahānatithipūjane ॥12-142-39॥

(Of the gods and of the sages and of the ancestors and of the great souls, a duty heard before by me is great in the honoring of guests.)
I have previously heard from the gods, sages, ancestors, and great souls that the highest duty is the honoring of guests.
कुरुष्वानुग्रहं मेऽद्य सत्यमेतद्ब्रवीमि ते। निश्चिता खलु मे बुद्धिरतिथिप्रतिपूजने ॥१२-१४२-४०॥
kuruṣvānugrahaṃ me'dya satyametadbravīmi te। niścitā khalu me buddhiratithipratipūjane ॥12-142-40॥

[अग्नि (agni) - fire; मध्यं (madhyaṃ) - middle; प्रविष्टं (praviṣṭaṃ) - entered; तं (taṃ) - him; लुब्धः (lubdhaḥ) - greedy; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; अथ (atha) - then; पक्षिणम् (pakṣiṇam) - bird; चिन्तयामास (cintayāmāsa) - he thought; मनसा (manasā) - with (his) mind; किम् (kim) - what; इदं (idaṃ) - this; नु (nu) - indeed; कृतं (kṛtaṃ) - done; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Having seen that bird, greedy, entered into the middle of the fire, then he thought with (his) mind: 'What indeed is this that has been done by me?')
Seeing the bird enter the midst of the fire, the greedy one thought to himself, 'What have I done?'
अहो मम नृशंसस्य गर्हितस्य स्वकर्मणा। अधर्मः सुमहान्घोरो भविष्यति न संशयः ॥१२-१४२-४३॥
aho mama nṛśaṁsasya garhitasya svakarmaṇā। adharmaḥ sumahāṅghoro bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ ॥12-142-43॥
[अहो (aho) - alas; मम (mama) - my; नृशंसस्य (nṛśaṁsasya) - of the cruel; गर्हितस्य (garhitasya) - of the condemned; स्वकर्मणा (svakarmaṇā) - by own action; अधर्मः (adharmaḥ) - unrighteousness; सुमहान् (sumahān) - very great; घोरः (ghoraḥ) - terrible; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(Alas, by my own action, of the cruel, of the condemned, unrighteousness very great and terrible will become, not (is there) doubt.)
Alas, because of my own cruel and condemned action, a very great and terrible unrighteousness will certainly arise—there is no doubt about it.
एवं बहुविधं भूरि विललाप स लुब्धकः। गर्हयन्स्वानि कर्माणि द्विजं दृष्ट्वा तथागतम् ॥१२-१४२-४४॥
evaṃ bahuvidhaṃ bhūri vilalāpa sa lubdhakaḥ। garhayan svāni karmāṇi dvijaṃ dṛṣṭvā tathāgatam ॥12-142-44॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; बहुविधं (bahuvidhaṃ) - of many kinds; भूरि (bhūri) - much; विललाप (vilalāpa) - lamented; स (sa) - he; लुब्धकः (lubdhakaḥ) - the hunter; गर्हयन् (garhayan) - blaming; स्वानि (svāni) - his own; कर्माणि (karmāṇi) - actions; द्विजं (dvijaṃ) - the twice-born (Brahmin); दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तथागतम् (tathāgatam) - thus arrived;]
(Thus, of many kinds, much, lamented, he, the hunter, blaming his own actions, having seen the twice-born thus arrived.)
Thus, the hunter lamented in many ways, blaming his own actions, upon seeing the Brahmin who had arrived in such a manner.
