Bhīṣma said.
ततो गते शाकुनिके कपोती प्राह दुःखिता। संस्मृत्य भर्तारमथो रुदती शोकमूर्छिता ॥१२-१४४-१॥
tato gate śākunike kapotī prāha duḥkhitā। saṃsmṛtya bhartāramatho rudatī śokamūrcchitā ॥12-144-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; गते (gate) - having gone; शाकुनिके (śākunike) - the bird-catcher; कपोती (kapotī) - the female dove; प्राह (prāha) - spoke; दुःखिता (duḥkhitā) - distressed; संस्मृत्य (saṃsmṛtya) - having remembered; भर्तारम् (bhartāram) - her husband; अथ (atha) - then; रुदती (rudatī) - weeping; शोकमूर्छिता (śokamūrcchitā) - faint with grief;]
(Then, after the bird-catcher had gone, the female dove, distressed, spoke. Having remembered her husband, then, weeping, faint with grief.)
After the bird-catcher departed, the sorrowful female dove, recalling her husband, spoke while weeping and overcome with grief.
नाहं ते विप्रियं कान्त कदाचिदपि संस्मरे। सर्वा वै विधवा नारी बहुपुत्रापि खेचर ॥ शोच्या भवति बन्धूनां पतिहीना मनस्विनी ॥१२-१४४-२॥
nāhaṃ te vipriyaṃ kānta kadācidapi saṃsmare। sarvā vai vidhavā nārī bahuputrāpi khecara ॥ śocyā bhavati bandhūnāṃ patihīnā manasvinī ॥12-144-2॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; ते (te) - to you; विप्रियं (vipriyaṃ) - unpleasant; कान्त (kānta) - O beloved; कदाचित् (kadācit) - at any time; अपि (api) - even; संस्मरे (saṃsmare) - I remember; सर्वा (sarvā) - every; वै (vai) - indeed; विधवा (vidhavā) - widow; नारी (nārī) - woman; बहुपुत्रा (bahuputrā) - having many sons; अपि (api) - even; खेचर (khecara) - moving in the sky; शोच्या (śocyā) - to be pitied; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; बन्धूनाम् (bandhūnām) - of relatives; पतिहीना (patihīnā) - bereft of husband; मनस्विनी (manasvinī) - high-minded woman;]
(Not I to you unpleasant, O beloved, at any time even I remember. Every indeed widow woman, having many sons even, moving in the sky, to be pitied becomes of relatives, bereft of husband, high-minded woman.)
O beloved, I have never recalled anything unpleasant about you. Every widow, even if she has many sons or moves in the sky, is to be pitied by her relatives; a high-minded woman bereft of her husband becomes pitiable.
लालिताहं त्वया नित्यं बहुमानाच्च सान्त्विता। वचनैर्मधुरैः स्निग्धैरसकृत्सुमनोहरैः ॥१२-१४४-३॥
lālitāhaṃ tvayā nityaṃ bahumānācca sāntvitā। vacanair madhuraiḥ snigdhair asakṛt sumanoharaiḥ ॥12-144-3॥
[लालिताऽहम् (lālitā'ham) - caressed-I; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; बहुमानात् (bahumāṇāt) - from respect; च (ca) - and; सान्त्विता (sāntvitā) - consoled; वचनैः (vacanaiḥ) - by words; मधुरैः (madhuraiḥ) - sweet; स्निग्धैः (snigdhaiḥ) - affectionate; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; सुमनोहरैः (sumanoharaiḥ) - very charming;]
(I have been caressed by you always, and consoled out of respect, by words that are sweet, affectionate, repeatedly very charming.)
I have always been cherished by you, treated with respect, and comforted with words that are sweet, affectionate, and repeatedly most delightful.
कन्दरेषु च शैलानां नदीनां निर्झरेषु च। द्रुमाग्रेषु च रम्येषु रमिताहं त्वया प्रिय ॥१२-१४४-४॥
kandareṣu ca śailānāṃ nadīnāṃ nirjhareṣu ca। drumāgreṣu ca ramyeṣu ramitāhaṃ tvayā priya ॥12-144-4॥
[कन्दरेषु (kandareṣu) - in the caves; च (ca) - and; शैलानां (śailānāṃ) - of the mountains; नदीनां (nadīnāṃ) - of the rivers; निर्झरेषु (nirjhareṣu) - in the waterfalls; च (ca) - and; द्रुमाग्रेषु (drumāgreṣu) - on the tops of trees; च (ca) - and; रम्येषु (ramyeṣu) - in the delightful (places); रमिता (ramitā) - enjoyed; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; प्रिय (priya) - dear;]
(In the caves and of the mountains, of the rivers and in the waterfalls, on the tops of trees and in the delightful (places), I, dear, was enjoyed by you.)
My dear, I was enjoyed by you in the caves of the mountains, in the rivers and waterfalls, on the tops of trees, and in all delightful places.
आकाशगमने चैव सुखिताहं त्वया सुखम्। विहृतास्मि त्वया कान्त तन्मे नाद्यास्ति किञ्चन ॥१२-१४४-५॥
ākāśagamane caiva sukhitāhaṃ tvayā sukham। vihṛtāsmi tvayā kānta tanme nādyāsti kiñcana ॥12-144-5॥
[आकाशगमने (ākāśagamane) - in going to the sky; (ākāśa - sky; gamana - going; e - in) च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सुखिता (sukhitā) - happy; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; विहृता (vihṛtā) - enjoyed; अस्मि (asmi) - am; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; कान्त (kānta) - beloved; तत् (tat) - that; मे (me) - to me; न (na) - not; अद्य (adya) - today; अस्ति (asti) - is; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything;]
(In going to the sky and indeed, I am happy by you, happiness enjoyed am by you, beloved, that to me not today is anything.)
In going to the sky, I have been happy with you, and I have enjoyed happiness with you, beloved; today, I have nothing left.
मितं ददाति हि पिता मितं माता मितं सुतः। अमितस्य तु दातारं भर्तारं का न पूजयेत् ॥१२-१४४-६॥
mitaṃ dadāti hi pitā mitaṃ mātā mitaṃ sutaḥ। amitasya tu dātāraṃ bhartāraṃ kā na pūjayet ॥12-144-6॥
[मितं (mitaṃ) - measured; limited; ददाति (dadāti) - gives; हि (hi) - indeed; पिता (pitā) - father; मितं (mitaṃ) - measured; limited; माता (mātā) - mother; मितं (mitaṃ) - measured; limited; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; अमितस्य (amitasya) - of the unlimited; of the boundless; तु (tu) - but; दातारं (dātāraṃ) - giver; भर्तारं (bhartāraṃ) - supporter; husband; का (kā) - who; what woman; न (na) - not; पूजयेत् (pūjayet) - should worship; should honor;]
(Measured gives indeed father, measured mother, measured son. Of the unlimited but giver, supporter, who not should worship?)
A father gives in measure, a mother gives in measure, a son gives in measure. But who would not honor the giver and supporter of the unlimited?"
नास्ति भर्तृसमो नाथो न च भर्तृसमं सुखम्। विसृज्य धनसर्वस्वं भर्ता वै शरणं स्त्रियाः ॥१२-१४४-७॥
nāsti bhartṛ-samo nātho na ca bhartṛ-samaṃ sukham। visṛjya dhana-sarvasvaṃ bhartā vai śaraṇaṃ striyāḥ ॥12-144-7॥
[नास्ति (nāsti) - is not; भर्तृसमः (bhartṛ-samaḥ) - like the husband; नाथः (nāthaḥ) - protector; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; भर्तृसमम् (bhartṛ-samam) - like the husband; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; विसृज्य (visṛjya) - having abandoned; धनसर्वस्वम् (dhana-sarvasvam) - all wealth; भर्ता (bhartā) - husband; वै (vai) - indeed; शरणम् (śaraṇam) - refuge; स्त्रियाः (striyāḥ) - of a woman;]
(There is no protector like the husband, nor happiness like the husband. Having abandoned all wealth, indeed, the husband is the refuge of a woman.)
There is no protector for a woman like her husband, nor is there happiness equal to that given by the husband. Even if she gives up all her wealth, the husband alone is truly the refuge for a woman.
न कार्यमिह मे नाथ जीवितेन त्वया विना। पतिहीनापि का नारी सती जीवितुमुत्सहेत् ॥१२-१४४-८॥
na kāryam iha me nātha jīvitena tvayā vinā। patihīnā api kā nārī satī jīvitum utsahet॥12-144-8॥
[न (na) - not; कार्यं (kāryam) - purpose; इह (iha) - here; मे (me) - for me; नाथ (nātha) - O lord; जीवितेन (jīvitena) - with life; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; विना (vinā) - without; पतिहीना (patihīnā) - bereft of husband; अपि (api) - even; का (kā) - which; नारी (nārī) - woman; सती (satī) - chaste; जीवितुम् (jīvitum) - to live; उत्सहेत् (utsahet) - would be able;]
(Not is there purpose here for me, O lord, with life without you. Bereft of husband, even which woman, chaste, to live would be able?)
O lord, there is no purpose for me to live here without you. Even a chaste woman, bereft of her husband, which woman would be able to live?
एवं विलप्य बहुधा करुणं सा सुदुःखिता। पतिव्रता सम्प्रदीप्तं प्रविवेश हुताशनम् ॥१२-१४४-९॥
evaṃ vilapya bahudhā karuṇaṃ sā suduḥkhitā। pativratā sampradīptaṃ praviveśa hutāśanam ॥12-144-9॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; विलप्य (vilapya) - having lamented; बहुधा (bahudhā) - in many ways; करुणं (karuṇam) - piteously; सा (sā) - she; सुदुःखिता (suduḥkhitā) - greatly distressed; पतिव्रता (pativratā) - devoted to her husband; सम्प्रदीप्तं (sampradīptam) - blazing; प्रविवेश (praviveśa) - entered; हुताशनम् (hutāśanam) - fire;]
(Thus, having lamented in many ways piteously, she, greatly distressed, devoted to her husband, entered the blazing fire.)
Thus, after lamenting in many ways with deep sorrow, the devoted wife, overwhelmed with grief, entered the blazing fire.
ततश्चित्राम्बरधरं भर्तारं सान्वपश्यत। विमानस्थं सुकृतिभिः पूज्यमानं महात्मभिः ॥१२-१४४-१०॥
tataś citrāmbaradharaṃ bhartāraṃ sānvapaśyata। vimānasthaṃ sukṛtibhiḥ pūjyamānaṃ mahātmabhiḥ ॥12-144-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; चित्राम्बरधरं (citrāmbaradharaṃ) - wearing variegated garments; भर्तारं (bhartāram) - husband; सा (sā) - she; अन्वपश्यत् (anvapaśyat) - saw; विमानस्थं (vimānastham) - situated in an aerial car; सुकृतिभिः (sukṛtibhiḥ) - by the virtuous; पूज्यमानं (pūjyamānam) - being worshipped; महात्मभिः (mahātmabhiḥ) - by the great-souled ones;]
(Then she saw her husband, wearing variegated garments, situated in an aerial car, being worshipped by the virtuous and by the great-souled ones.)

चित्रमाल्याम्बरधरं सर्वाभरणभूषितम्। विमानशतकोटीभिरावृतं पुण्यकीर्तिभिः ॥१२-१४४-११॥

(Then the bird who had gone to heaven, joined together with his wife, honored by him through action, enjoyed there with his wife.)
Then the bird, having reached heaven, was united with his wife, honored by his deeds, and enjoyed happiness there together with her.
