Bhīṣma said.
ततस्तं लुब्धकः पश्यन्कृपयाभिपरिप्लुतः। कपोतमग्नौ पतितं वाक्यं पुनरुवाच ह ॥१२-१४३-१॥
tatas taṃ lubdhakaḥ paśyan kṛpayābhipariplutaḥ। kapotam agnau patitaṃ vākyaṃ punar uvāca ha ॥12-143-1॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; तं (taṃ) - him; लुब्धकः (lubdhakaḥ) - the hunter; पश्यन् (paśyan) - seeing; कृपया (kṛpayā) - with compassion; अभिपरिप्लुतः (abhipariplutaḥ) - overwhelmed; कपोतम् (kapotam) - the pigeon; अग्नौ (agnau) - in the fire; पतितम् (patitam) - fallen; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; उवाच (uvāca) - spoke; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then, seeing him, the hunter, overwhelmed with compassion, again spoke these words as the pigeon had fallen into the fire, indeed.)
Then, seeing the pigeon fallen into the fire, the hunter, overwhelmed with compassion, again spoke these words.
किमीदृशं नृशंसेन मया कृतमबुद्धिना। भविष्यति हि मे नित्यं पातकं हृदि जीवतः ॥१२-१४३-२॥
kimīdṛśaṃ nṛśaṃsena mayā kṛtamabuddhinā। bhaviṣyati hi me nityaṃ pātakaṃ hṛdi jīvataḥ ॥12-143-2॥
[किम् (kim) - what; ईदृशं (īdṛśam) - such; नृशंसेन (nṛśaṃsena) - by the cruel one; मया (mayā) - by me; कृतम् (kṛtam) - done; अबुद्धिना (abuddhinā) - unwisely; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; नित्यं (nityam) - always; पातकं (pātakam) - sin; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; जीवत: (jīvataḥ) - while living;]
(What such (act) by the cruel one by me done unwisely will indeed to me always sin in the heart while living.)
What is this act, such as this, done unwisely by me, the cruel one? Indeed, for me, sin will always remain in my heart while I live.
स विनिन्दन्नथात्मानं पुनः पुनरुवाच ह। धिङ्मामस्तु सुदुर्बुद्धिं सदा निकृतिनिश्चयम् ॥ शुभं कर्म परित्यज्य योऽहं शकुनिलुब्धकः ॥१२-१४३-३॥
sa vinindann athātmānaṃ punaḥ punar uvāca ha। dhiṅ mām astu sudurbuddhiṃ sadā nikṛtiniścayam ॥ śubhaṃ karma parityajya yo'haṃ śakunilubdhakaḥ ॥12-143-3॥
[स (sa) - he; विनिन्दन् (vinindan) - blaming; अथ (atha) - then; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - himself; पुनः पुनः (punaḥ punaḥ) - again and again; उवाच (uvāca) - said; ह (ha) - indeed; धिङ् (dhiṅ) - fie; माम् (mām) - me; अस्तु (astu) - let it be; सुदुर्बुद्धिम् (sudurbuddhim) - very evil-minded; सदा (sadā) - always; निकृति-निश्चयम् (nikṛti-niścayam) - wickedness-resolved; शुभम् (śubham) - auspicious; कर्म (karma) - action; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - abandoning; यः (yaḥ) - who; अहम् (aham) - I; शकुनि-लुब्धकः (śakuni-lubdhakaḥ) - bird-hunter;]
(He, blaming himself again and again, then indeed said: 'Fie upon me, let it be so, (I am) very evil-minded, always resolved on wickedness. Abandoning auspicious action, I who am a bird-hunter.')
He repeatedly blamed himself and then said: 'Fie upon me! Let it be so—I am truly of very evil mind, always intent on wickedness. Having abandoned good deeds, I am a bird-hunter.'
नृशंसस्य ममाद्यायं प्रत्यादेशो न संशयः। दत्तः स्वमांसं ददता कपोतेन महात्मना ॥१२-१४३-४॥
nṛśaṁsasya mamādyāyaṁ pratyādeśo na saṁśayaḥ। dattaḥ svamāṁsaṁ dadatā kapotena mahātmanā ॥12-143-4॥
[नृशंसस्य (nṛśaṁsasya) - of the cruel one; मम (mama) - my; अद्य (adya) - today; अयम् (ayam) - this; प्रत्यादेशः (pratyādeśaḥ) - retribution; न (na) - not; संशयः (saṁśayaḥ) - doubt; दत्तः (dattaḥ) - given; स्वमांसम् (svamāṁsam) - own flesh; ददता (dadatā) - by giving; कपोतेन (kapotena) - by the pigeon; महात्मना (mahātmanā) - by the great-souled one;]
(Of the cruel one, my, today, this retribution, not doubt; given own flesh by giving by the pigeon by the great-souled one.)
Today, this is certainly the retribution for me, the cruel one; there is no doubt. The great-souled pigeon has given his own flesh.
सोऽहं त्यक्ष्ये प्रियान्प्राणान्पुत्रदारं विसृज्य च। उपदिष्टो हि मे धर्मः कपोतेनातिधर्मिणा ॥१२-१४३-५॥
so'haṃ tyakṣye priyān prāṇān putradāraṃ visṛjya ca। upadiṣṭo hi me dharmaḥ kapotena atidharmiṇā ॥12-143-5॥
[सः (saḥ) - he; अहम् (aham) - I; त्यक्ष्ये (tyakṣye) - shall abandon; प्रियान् (priyān) - dear (ones); प्राणान् (prāṇān) - lives; पुत्रदारम् (putradāram) - son and wife; विसृज्य (visṛjya) - having given up; च (ca) - and; उपदिष्टः (upadiṣṭaḥ) - instructed; हि (hi) - indeed; मे (me) - to me; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; कपोतेन (kapotena) - by the pigeon; अतिधर्मिणा (atidharmiṇā) - by the supremely righteous;]
(He, I shall abandon dear lives, son and wife, having given up and; instructed indeed to me dharma by the pigeon by the supremely righteous.)
Therefore, I shall abandon my dear life, son, and wife, having given them up, for I have indeed been instructed in dharma by the supremely righteous pigeon.
अद्य प्रभृति देहं स्वं सर्वभोगैर्विवर्जितम्। यथा स्वल्पं जलं ग्रीष्मे शोषयिष्याम्यहं तथा ॥१२-१४३-६॥
adya prabhṛti dehaṃ svaṃ sarvabhogair vivarjitam। yathā svalpaṃ jalaṃ grīṣme śoṣayiṣyāmy ahaṃ tathā ॥12-143-6॥
[अद्य (adya) - today; प्रभृति (prabhṛti) - from now on; देहं (dehaṃ) - body; स्वं (svaṃ) - my own; सर्वभोगैः (sarvabhogaiḥ) - by all enjoyments; विवर्जितम् (vivarjitam) - deprived; यथा (yathā) - just as; स्वल्पं (svalpaṃ) - little; जलं (jalaṃ) - water; ग्रीष्मे (grīṣme) - in summer; शोषयिष्यामि (śoṣayiṣyāmi) - I will dry up; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(Today from now on, my own body deprived by all enjoyments, just as little water in summer I will dry up, I so.)
From today onwards, I will deprive my body of all enjoyments, just as little water dries up in the summer.
क्षुत्पिपासातपसहः कृशो धमनिसन्ततः। उपवासैर्बहुविधैश्चरिष्ये पारलौकिकम् ॥१२-१४३-७॥
kṣutpipāsātapasahaḥ kṛśo dhmanisantataḥ। upavāsairbahuvidhaiścariṣye pāralaukikam ॥12-143-7॥
[क्षुत् (kṣut) - hunger; पिपासा (pipāsā) - thirst; तपसहः (tapasahaḥ) - enduring austerity; कृशः (kṛśaḥ) - emaciated; धमनि (dhamani) - vein; सन्ततः (santataḥ) - pervaded; उपवासैः (upavāsaiḥ) - by fasts; बहुविधैः (bahuvidhaiḥ) - of many kinds; चरिष्ये (cariṣye) - I shall practice; पारलौकिकम् (pāralaukikam) - otherworldly (spiritual);]
(Hunger, thirst, enduring austerity, emaciated, pervaded by veins; by fasts of many kinds, I shall practice the otherworldly (spiritual).)
Emaciated by hunger, thirst, and austerities, my veins standing out, I will undertake many kinds of fasts and pursue spiritual practices.
अहो देहप्रदानेन दर्शितातिथिपूजना। तस्माद्धर्मं चरिष्यामि धर्मो हि परमा गतिः ॥ दृष्टो हि धर्मो धर्मिष्ठैर्यादृशो विहगोत्तमे ॥१२-१४३-८॥
aho dehapradānena darśitātithipūjanā। tasmāddharmaṃ cariṣyāmi dharmo hi paramā gatiḥ ॥ dṛṣṭo hi dharmo dharmiṣṭhairyādṛśo vihagottame ॥12-143-8॥
[अहो (aho) - indeed; देह-प्रदानेन (deha-pradānena) - by the giving of the body; दर्शित (darśita) - shown; अतिथि-पूजना (atithi-pūjanā) - guest-honoring; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - duty; चरिष्यामि (cariṣyāmi) - I shall practice; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; हि (hi) - indeed; परमा (paramā) - supreme; गतिः (gatiḥ) - goal; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; हि (hi) - indeed; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - duty; धर्मिष्ठैः (dharmiṣṭhaiḥ) - by the righteous; यादृशः (yādṛśaḥ) - such as; विहग-उत्तमे (vihaga-uttame) - O best of birds;]
(Indeed, by the giving of the body, guest-honoring has been shown. Therefore, I shall practice duty; duty indeed is the supreme goal. Duty has indeed been seen by the righteous, such as this, O best of birds.)
Indeed, by offering one's own body, the honoring of a guest has been demonstrated. Therefore, I will follow dharma, for dharma is truly the highest goal. Dharma has been witnessed in this way by the righteous, O best of birds.
एवमुक्त्वा विनिश्चित्य रौद्रकर्मा स लुब्धकः। महाप्रस्थानमाश्रित्य प्रययौ संशितव्रतः ॥१२-१४३-९॥
evam-uktvā viniścitya raudra-karmā sa lubdhakaḥ। mahāprasthānam āśritya prayayau saṃśita-vrataḥ ॥12-143-9॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; विनिश्चित्य (viniścitya) - having resolved; रौद्रकर्मा (raudra-karmā) - one of fierce deeds; स (sa) - he; लुब्धकः (lubdhakaḥ) - the hunter; महाप्रस्थानम् (mahāprasthānam) - great departure; आश्रित्य (āśritya) - having resorted to; प्रययौ (prayayau) - departed; संशितव्रतः (saṃśita-vrataḥ) - firm in vow;]
(Thus, having spoken and resolved, the hunter of fierce deeds, having resorted to the great departure, departed, firm in vow.)
Thus, having spoken and made up his mind, the fierce hunter, firm in his vow, set out on the great journey.
ततो यष्टिं शलाकाश्च क्षारकं पञ्जरं तथा। तांश्च बद्धा कपोतान्स सम्प्रमुच्योत्ससर्ज ह ॥१२-१४३-१०॥
tato yaṣṭiṃ śalākāś ca kṣārakaṃ pañjaraṃ tathā। tāṃś ca baddhā kapotāṃs sampramucyotsasarja ha ॥12-143-10॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; यष्टिम् (yaṣṭim) - stick; शलाकाः (śalākāḥ) - rods; च (ca) - and; क्षारकम् (kṣārakam) - alkali; पञ्जरम् (pañjaram) - cage; तथा (tathā) - also; तान् (tān) - them; च (ca) - and; बद्धान् (baddhān) - bound; कपोतान् (kapotān) - pigeons; सम्प्रमुच्य (sampramucya) - having completely released; उत्ससर्ज (utsasarja) - he let go; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Then the stick, rods, alkali, and also the cage; having completely released those bound pigeons, he indeed let them go.)
Then he took the stick, rods, alkali, and the cage; and having freed the bound pigeons, he let them go.
