kiṁ nu te mārutastāta prītimānatha vā suhṛt। tvāṁ rakṣati sadā yena vane'smin pavano dhruvam ॥12-150-10॥

Is it that your son of the wind, dear one, is affectionate or a friend? Surely, it is by him that you are always protected in this forest.
विवान्हि पवनः स्थानाद्वृक्षानुच्चावचानपि। पर्वतानां च शिखराण्याचालयति वेगवान् ॥१२-१५०-११॥
vivān hi pavanaḥ sthānād vṛkṣān uccāvacān api। parvatānāṃ ca śikharāṇi ācalayati vegavān ॥12-150-11॥

शोषयत्येव पातालं विवान्गन्धवहः शुचिः। ह्रदांश्च सरितश्चैव सागरांश्च तथैव ह ॥१२-१५०-१२॥

त्वां संरक्षेत पवनः सखित्वेन न संशयः। तस्माद्बहलशाखोऽसि पर्णवान्पुष्पवानपि ॥१२-१५०-१३॥
tvāṃ saṃrakṣeta pavanaḥ sakhitvena na saṃśayaḥ। tasmādbahalaśākho'si parṇavānpuṣpavānapi ॥12-150-13॥

(You may be protected by the wind by friendship, there is no doubt; therefore, you are one with many branches, possessed of leaves, and also possessed of flowers.)

इदं च रमणीयं ते प्रतिभाति वनस्पते। यदिमे विहगास्तात रमन्ते मुदितास्त्वयि ॥१२-१५०-१४॥
idaṃ ca ramaṇīyaṃ te pratibhāti vanaspate। yadime vihagāstāta ramante muditāstvayi ॥12-150-14॥

(This and beautiful to you appears, O tree; if these birds, dear one, delight joyful in you.)
O tree, this place also appears beautiful to you, for these birds, dear one, are joyfully delighting in you.
एषां पृथक्समस्तानां श्रूयते मधुरः स्वरः। पुष्पसंमोदने काले वाशतां सुमनोहरम् ॥१२-१५०-१५॥
eṣāṃ pṛthaksamastānāṃ śrūyate madhuraḥ svaraḥ। puṣpasaṃmodane kāle vāśatāṃ sumanoharam ॥12-150-15॥
[एषां (eṣām) - of these; पृथक् (pṛthak) - separately; समस्तानाम् (samastānām) - of all; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; मधुरः (madhuraḥ) - sweet; स्वरः (svaraḥ) - sound; पुष्पसंमोदने (puṣpasaṃmodane) - in the fragrance of flowers; काले (kāle) - at the time; वाशताम् (vāśatām) - of the cries; सुमनोहरम् (sumanoharam) - very delightful;]

तथेमे मुदिता नागाः स्वयूथकुलशोभिनः। घर्मार्तास्त्वां समासाद्य सुखं विन्दन्ति शल्मले ॥१२-१५०-१६॥
tatheme muditā nāgāḥ svayūthakulaśobhinaḥ। gharmārtāstvāṃ samāsādya sukhaṃ vindanti śalmale ॥12-150-16॥
[तथा (tathā) - thus; इमे (ime) - these; मुदिताः (muditāḥ) - gladdened; नागाः (nāgāḥ) - serpents; स्व (sva) - their own; यूथ (yūtha) - herd; कुल (kula) - group; शोभिनः (śobhinaḥ) - adorned; घर्मार्ताः (gharmārtāḥ) - afflicted by heat; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; समासाद्य (samāsādya) - having approached; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; विन्दन्ति (vindanti) - find; शल्मले (śalmale) - on the silk-cotton tree;]
(Thus these gladdened serpents, adorned with their own herd and group, afflicted by heat, having approached you, find happiness on the silk-cotton tree.)
Thus, these joyful serpents, shining among their own groups, scorched by the heat, come to you and find comfort on the silk-cotton tree.
तथैव मृगजातीभिरन्याभिरुपशोभसे। तथा सार्थाधिवासैश्च शोभसे मेरुवद्द्रुम ॥१२-१५०-१७॥
tathaiva mṛgajātībhir anyābhir upaśobhase। tathā sārthādhivāsaiś ca śobhase meruvad druma ॥12-150-17॥

(In the same way, you are adorned by other species of deer and by others; likewise, you shine by the inhabitants of the caravan, O tree, like Meru.)
Just as you are adorned by other species of deer and others, so too you shine with the inhabitants of the caravan, O tree, like Mount Meru.
ब्राह्मणैश्च तपःसिद्धैस्तापसैः श्रमणैरपि। त्रिविष्टपसमं मन्ये तवायतनमेव ह ॥१२-१५०-१८॥
brāhmaṇaiś ca tapaḥsiddhais tāpasaiḥ śramaṇair api। triviṣṭapasamaṃ manye tavāyatanam eva ha ॥12-150-18॥
[ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; तपःसिद्धैः (tapaḥsiddhaiḥ) - by those perfected in austerity; तापसैः (tāpasaiḥ) - by ascetics; श्रमणैः (śramaṇaiḥ) - by monks; अपि (api) - also; त्रिविष्टपसमम् (triviṣṭapasamam) - equal to heaven; मन्ये (manye) - I consider; तव (tava) - your; आयतनम् (āyatanam) - abode; एव (eva) - indeed; ह (ha) - certainly;]
(By Brāhmaṇas and by those perfected in austerity, by ascetics, by monks also, equal to heaven, I consider your abode indeed certainly.)
I truly consider your abode, which is revered by Brāhmaṇas, perfected ascetics, and monks, to be equal to heaven.
बन्धुत्वादथ वा सख्याच्छल्मले नात्र संशयः। पालयत्येव सततं भीमः सर्वत्रगोऽनिलः ॥१२-१५०-१९॥
bandhutvād atha vā sakhyāc chalmale nātra saṃśayaḥ। pālayaty eva satataṃ bhīmaḥ sarvatrago'nilaḥ॥12-150-19॥
[बन्धुत्वात् (bandhutvāt) - from kinship; अथ (atha) - or; वा (vā) - or; सख्यात् (sakhyāt) - from friendship; छल्मले (chalmale) - with deceit; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; पालयति (pālayati) - protects; एव (eva) - indeed; सततम् (satatam) - always; भीमः (bhīmaḥ) - Bhima; सर्वत्रगः (sarvatragaḥ) - who goes everywhere; अनिलः (anilaḥ) - the wind;]
(From kinship or or from friendship with deceit, here there is no doubt; Bhima, the wind who goes everywhere, indeed always protects.)

न्यग्भावं परमं वायोः शल्मले त्वमुपागतः। तवाहमस्मीति सदा येन रक्षति मारुतः ॥१२-१५०-२०॥
nyagbhāvaṃ paramaṃ vāyoḥ śalmale tvamupāgataḥ। tavāhamasmīti sadā yena rakṣati mārutaḥ ॥12-150-20॥
[न्यग्भावम् (nyagbhāvam) - humility; (state of being low) परमम् (paramam) - supreme; (highest) वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of Vāyu; (wind-god) शल्मले (śalmale) - on the śalmali; (silk-cotton tree) त्वम् (tvam) - you; उपागतः (upāgataḥ) - have come; (arrived) तव (tava) - your; अहम् (aham) - I; अस्मि (asmi) - am; इति (iti) - thus; सदा (sadā) - always; येन (yena) - by whom; रक्षति (rakṣati) - protects; मारुतः (mārutaḥ) - the wind-god;]
(Humility, supreme, of Vāyu, on the śalmali, you have come. Your I am thus always, by whom protects the wind-god.)
You have come to the supreme humility of Vāyu on the śalmali tree. The wind-god always protects the one who says, 'I am yours.'
न तं पश्याम्यहं वृक्षं पर्वतं वापि तं दृढम्। यो न वायुबलाद्भग्नः पृथिव्यामिति मे मतिः ॥१२-१५०-२१॥
na taṃ paśyāmyahaṃ vṛkṣaṃ parvataṃ vāpi taṃ dṛḍham। yo na vāyu-balād-bhagnaḥ pṛthivyām-iti me matiḥ ॥12-150-21॥
[न (na) - not; तं (taṃ) - that; पश्यामि (paśyāmi) - I see; अहम् (aham) - I; वृक्षं (vṛkṣaṃ) - tree; पर्वतं (parvataṃ) - mountain; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; तं (taṃ) - that; दृढम् (dṛḍham) - firm; यः (yaḥ) - who; न (na) - not; वायुबलात् (vāyu-balāt) - by the force of wind; भग्नः (bhagnaḥ) - broken; पृथिव्याम् (pṛthivyām) - on earth; इति (iti) - thus; मे (me) - my; मतिः (matiḥ) - opinion;]
(Not that I see, I, tree, mountain, or even that firm (object); who not by the force of wind is broken on earth—thus is my opinion.)
I do not see any tree or mountain or anything else on earth so firm that it is not broken by the force of the wind; this is my opinion.
त्वं पुनः कारणैर्नूनं शल्मले रक्ष्यसे सदा। वायुना सपरीवारस्तेन तिष्ठस्यसंशयम् ॥१२-१५०-२२॥
tvaṃ punaḥ kāraṇair nūnaṃ śalmale rakṣyase sadā। vāyunā saparīvāras tena tiṣṭhasi asaṃśayam ॥12-150-22॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; कारणैः (kāraṇaiḥ) - by causes; by reasons; नूनम् (nūnam) - certainly; शल्मले (śalmale) - on the silk-cotton tree; रक्ष्यसे (rakṣyase) - are protected; सदा (sadā) - always; वायुना (vāyunā) - by the wind; सपरीवारः (saparīvāraḥ) - with your family; तेन (tena) - by him; by that; तिष्ठसि (tiṣṭhasi) - you remain; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt;]
(You again are certainly protected by causes always on the silk-cotton tree; by the wind, with your family, by that, you remain without doubt.)

(Not to me is Vāyu a friend, O Brāhmaṇa, nor a relative, nor to me a well-wisher. Parameṣṭhī likewise, not indeed, by whom Mānila protects.)

मम तेजोबलं वायोर्भीममपि हि नारद। कलामष्टादशीं प्राणैर्न मे प्राप्नोति मारुतः ॥१२-१५०-२४॥
mama tejobalaṃ vāyorbhīmamapi hi nārada। kalāmaṣṭādaśīṃ prāṇairna me prāpnoti mārutaḥ ॥12-150-24॥
[मम (mama) - my; तेजोबलं (tejobalam) - splendor-strength; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of Vāyu; भीमम् (bhīmam) - terrible; अपि (api) - even; हि (hi) - indeed; नारद (nārada) - O Nārada; कलाम् (kalām) - a sixteenth part; अष्टादशीं (aṣṭādaśīm) - eighteenth; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - with vital energies; न (na) - not; मे (me) - my; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; मारुतः (mārutaḥ) - the Wind-god;]
(My splendor-strength, O Nārada, even the terrible (strength) of Vāyu, indeed, with (all his) vital energies, the Wind-god does not attain even to the eighteenth sixteenth part of mine.)

(The supreme wind, coming, was restrained by me by force, breaking trees, mountains, and whatever else also anything.)

स मया बहुशो भग्नः प्रभञ्जन्वै प्रभञ्जनः। तस्मान्न बिभ्ये देवर्षे क्रुद्धादपि समीरणात् ॥१२-१५०-२६॥
sa mayā bahuśo bhagnaḥ prabhañjanvai prabhañjanaḥ। tasmānna bibhye devarṣe kruddhādapi samīraṇāt ॥12-150-26॥
[स (sa) - he; मया (mayā) - by me; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; भग्नः (bhagnaḥ) - broken; प्रभञ्जन् (prabhañjan) - breaker; वै (vai) - indeed; प्रभञ्जनः (prabhañjanaḥ) - the breaker; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; न (na) - not; बिभ्ये (bibhye) - I fear; देवर्षे (devarṣe) - O divine sage; क्रुद्धात् (kruddhāt) - from the angry; अपि (api) - even; समीरणात् (samīraṇāt) - from the wind;]
(He by me many times broken breaker indeed breaker. Therefore not I fear, O divine sage, even from the angry wind.)

शल्मले विपरीतं ते दर्शनं नात्र संशयः। न हि वायोर्बलेनास्ति भूतं तुल्यबलं क्वचित् ॥१२-१५०-२७॥
śalmale viparītaṃ te darśanaṃ nātra saṃśayaḥ। na hi vāyorbalenāsti bhūtaṃ tulyabalaṃ kvacit ॥12-150-27॥
[शल्मले (śalmale) - on the śalmali (silk-cotton) tree; विपरीतं (viparītaṃ) - opposite; reversed; ते (te) - your; दर्शनं (darśanaṃ) - appearance; sight; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of the wind; बलेन (balena) - by strength; अस्ति (asti) - there is; भूतं (bhūtaṃ) - being; creature; तुल्यबलं (tulyabalaṃ) - equal in strength; क्वचित् (kvacit) - anywhere;]
(On the śalmali tree, your appearance is opposite; there is no doubt here. Indeed, by the strength of the wind, there is no being anywhere equal in strength.)

[यत् (yat) - whatever; हि (hi) - indeed; किञ्चित् (kiñcit) - anything; इह (iha) - here; प्राणि (prāṇi) - living being; शल्मले (śalmale) - on the silk-cotton tree; चेष्टते (ceṣṭate) - moves; भुवि (bhuvi) - on the earth; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Wind (god); चेष्टा (ceṣṭā) - movement; प्राणकरः (prāṇakaraḥ) - life-giver; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord;]
(Whatever indeed here any living being moves on the silk-cotton tree or on the earth, everywhere the revered Wind, the lord, is the movement and life-giver.)

एष चेष्टयते सम्यक्प्राणिनः सम्यगायतः। असम्यगायतो भूयश्चेष्टते विकृतो नृषु ॥१२-१५०-३०॥
eṣa ceṣṭayate samyak-prāṇinaḥ samyag-āyataḥ। asamyag-āyato bhūyaś ceṣṭate vikṛto nṛṣu ॥12-150-30॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; चेष्टयते (ceṣṭayate) - acts; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; प्राणिनः (prāṇinaḥ) - of the living being; सम्यग् (samyag) - properly; आयतः (āyataḥ) - extended; असम्यग् (asamyag) - improperly; आयतः (āyataḥ) - extended; भूयः (bhūyaḥ) - again; चेष्टते (ceṣṭate) - acts; विकृतः (vikṛtaḥ) - distorted; नृषु (nṛṣu) - among men;]
(This acts properly for the living being who is properly extended. For one who is not properly extended, it acts again, distorted among men.)

sa tvam evaṃ-vidhaṃ vāyuṃ sarva-sattva-bhṛtāṃ varam। na pūjayasi pūjyaṃ taṃ kim anyad buddhi-lāghavāt ॥12-150-31॥
[स (sa) - he; त्वम् (tvam) - you; एवंविधं (evaṃ-vidham) - such; वायुम् (vāyum) - Vāyu; सर्वसत्त्वभृताम् (sarva-sattva-bhṛtām) - of all beings the supporter; वरम् (varam) - the best; न (na) - not; पूजयसि (pūjayasi) - you worship; पूज्यम् (pūjyam) - the worshipful; तम् (tam) - him; किम् (kim) - why; अन्यत् (anyat) - else; बुद्धिलाघवात् (buddhi-lāghavāt) - out of lack of understanding;]
(He, you (do) not worship such Vāyu, the best among the supporters of all beings, the worshipful one—him. Why else (is this) except out of lack of understanding?)

asāraś cāsi durbuddhe kevalaṃ bahu bhāṣase। krodhādibhir avacchanno mithyā vadasi śalmale ॥12-150-32॥
[असारः (asāraḥ) - without essence; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - you are; दुर्बुद्धे (durbuddhe) - O one of poor intellect; केवलम् (kevalam) - only; बहु (bahu) - much; भाषसे (bhāṣase) - you speak; क्रोधादिभिः (krodhādibhiḥ) - by anger and others; अवच्छन्नः (avacchannaḥ) - covered; मिथ्या (mithyā) - falsely; वदसि (vadasi) - you speak; शल्मले (śalmale) - O Śalmala (addressing by name);]
(You are without essence and, O one of poor intellect, only speak much. Covered by anger and others, you speak falsely, O Śalmala.)
You are insubstantial and, O dull-witted one, you only talk excessively. Shrouded by anger and similar faults, you speak falsely, O Śalmala.
मम रोषः समुत्पन्नस्त्वय्येवं सम्प्रभाषति। ब्रवीम्येष स्वयं वायोस्तव दुर्भाषितं बहु ॥१२-१५०-३३॥
mama roṣaḥ samutpannastvayyevaṃ samprabhāṣati। bravīmyeṣa svayaṃ vāyostava durbhāṣitaṃ bahu ॥12-150-33॥
[मम (mama) - my; रोषः (roṣaḥ) - anger; समुत्पन्नः (samutpannaḥ) - arisen; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; सम्प्रभाषति (samprabhāṣati) - speaks; ब्रवीमि (bravīmi) - I say; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; स्वयम् (svayam) - myself; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of Vāyu; तव (tava) - your; दुर्भाषितम् (durbhāṣitam) - ill-spoken; बहु (bahu) - much;]
(My anger, having arisen in you, thus speaks. I myself say, O Vāyu, much of your speech is ill-spoken.)

चन्दनैः स्पन्दनैः शालैः सरलैर्देवदारुभिः। वेतसैर्बन्धनैश्चापि ये चान्ये बलवत्तराः ॥१२-१५०-३४॥
candanair spandanair śālaiḥ saralair devadārubhiḥ। vetasair bandhanaiś cāpi ye ca anye balavattarāḥ॥12-150-34॥
[चन्दनैः (candanair) - with sandalwoods; स्पन्दनैः (spandanair) - with spandanas (a type of tree); शालैः (śālaiḥ) - with śāla trees; सरलैः (saralair) - with sarala trees; देवदारुभिः (devadārubhiḥ) - with devadāru trees; वेतसैः (vetasaiḥ) - with vetasa (canes); बन्धनैः (bandhanaiḥ) - with bindings; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; ये (ye) - those who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; बलवत्तराः (balavattarāḥ) - stronger;]
(With sandalwoods, spandan trees, śāla trees, sarala trees, devadāru trees, vetasa canes, and bindings also, and those others who are stronger.)

[तैः (taiḥ) - by them; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; न (na) - not; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; दुर्बुद्धे (durbuddhe) - O one of evil mind; क्षिप्तः (kṣiptaḥ) - hurled; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Vāyu; कृतात्मभिः (kṛtātmabhiḥ) - by those of controlled self; ते (te) - they; हि (hi) - indeed; जानन्ति (jānanti) - know; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of Vāyu; च (ca) - and; बलम् (balam) - strength; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; एव (eva) - only; च (ca) - and;]
(By them and also not thus, O one of evil mind, was Vāyu hurled by those of controlled self. They indeed know the strength of Vāyu and of themselves only and.)
O evil-minded one, Vāyu was not hurled in this way by those of controlled self. For they alone truly know both Vāyu's strength and their own.
तस्मात्ते वै नमस्यन्ति श्वसनं द्रुमसत्तमाः। त्वं तु मोहान्न जानीषे वायोर्बलमनन्तकम् ॥१२-१५०-३६॥
tasmātte vai namasyanti śvasanaṃ drumasattamāḥ। tvaṃ tu mohānna jānīṣe vāyorbalamanantakam ॥12-150-36॥
[तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; ते (te) - they; वै (vai) - indeed; नमस्यन्ति (namasyanti) - bow (to); श्वसनम् (śvasanam) - wind; द्रुमसत्तमाः (drumasattamāḥ) - the best among trees; त्वम् (tvam) - you; तु (tu) - but; मोहात् (mohāt) - out of delusion; न (na) - not; जानीषे (jānīṣe) - know; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of the wind; बलम् (balam) - strength; अनन्तकम् (anantakam) - endless;]
(Therefore, they indeed bow to the wind, the best among trees; but you, out of delusion, do not know the endless strength of the wind.)
