Bhīṣma said.
एवमुक्त्वा तु राजेन्द्र शल्मलिं ब्रह्मवित्तमः। नारदः पवने सर्वं शल्मलेर्वाक्यमब्रवीत् ॥१२-१५१-१॥
evam-uktvā tu rājendra śalmaliṃ brahmavittamaḥ। nāradaḥ pavane sarvaṃ śalmalervākyam abravīt ॥12-151-1॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्त्वा (uktvā) - having spoken; तु (tu) - but; राजेन्द्र (rājendra) - O king; शल्मलिं (śalmaliṃ) - to Śalmali; ब्रह्मवित्तमः (brahmavittamaḥ) - the foremost knower of Brahman; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; पवने (pavane) - to the wind; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; शल्मलेः (śalmaleḥ) - of Śalmali; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - words; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Thus having spoken, but O king, to Śalmali, the foremost knower of Brahman, Nārada to the wind all of Śalmali's words spoke.)
Having thus spoken to Śalmali, O king, the foremost knower of Brahman, Nārada narrated all of Śalmali's words to the wind.
हिमवत्पृष्ठजः कश्चिच्छल्मलिः परिवारवान्। बृहन्मूलो बृहच्छाखः स त्वां वायोऽवमन्यते ॥१२-१५१-२॥
himavatpṛṣṭhajaḥ kaścićchalmalīḥ parivāravān। bṛhanmūlo bṛhacchākhaḥ sa tvāṃ vāyo'vamanyate ॥12-151-2॥
[हिमवत्-पृष्ठ-जः (himavat-pṛṣṭha-jaḥ) - born on the back of the Himalaya; कश्चित्-शल्मलिः (kaścit-śalmaliḥ) - some silk-cotton tree; परिवारवान् (parivāravān) - having attendants; बृहत्-मूलः (bṛhat-mūlaḥ) - with large roots; बृहत्-शाखः (bṛhat-śākhaḥ) - with large branches; सः (saḥ) - he; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - O Vāyu; अवमन्यते (avamanyate) - disregards;]
(Born on the back of the Himalaya, some silk-cotton tree, having attendants, with large roots, with large branches, he disregards you, O Vāyu.)
A certain silk-cotton tree, born on the slopes of the Himalaya, surrounded by its kin, with great roots and branches, now dares to disregard you, O Vāyu.
बहून्याक्षेपयुक्तानि त्वामाह वचनानि सः। न युक्तानि मया वायो तानि वक्तुं त्वयि प्रभो ॥१२-१५१-३॥
bahūnyākṣepayuktāni tvāmāha vacanāni saḥ। na yuktāni mayā vāyo tāni vaktuṃ tvayi prabho ॥12-151-3॥
[बहूनि (bahūni) - many; आक्षेपयुक्तानि (ākṣepayuktāni) - filled with reproach; त्वाम् (tvām) - to you; आह (āha) - said; वचनानि (vacanāni) - words; सः (saḥ) - he; न (na) - not; युक्तानि (yuktāni) - proper; मया (mayā) - by me; वायो (vāyo) - O Vāyu; तानि (tāni) - those; वक्तुम् (vaktum) - to speak; त्वयि (tvayi) - to you; प्रभो (prabho) - O lord;]
(Many words filled with reproach he said to you; not proper by me, O Vāyu, those to speak to you, O lord.)
He spoke many reproachful words to you; O Vāyu, it was not proper for me to say those things to you, O lord.
जानामि त्वामहं वायो सर्वप्राणभृतां वरम्। वरिष्ठं च गरिष्ठं च क्रोधे वैवस्वतं यथा ॥१२-१५१-४॥
jānāmi tvām ahaṃ vāyo sarvapraṇabhṛtāṃ varam। variṣṭhaṃ ca gariṣṭhaṃ ca krodhe vaivasvataṃ yathā ॥12-151-4॥
[जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; (from root jñā-) त्वाम् (tvām) - you; (accusative singular of tvam) अहम् (aham) - I; (nominative singular) वायो (vāyo) - O Vāyu; (vocative singular of vāyu) सर्वप्राणभृताम् (sarvapraṇabhṛtām) - of all life-bearers; (genitive plural of sarva-prāṇa-bhṛt) वरम् (varam) - the best; (accusative singular) वरिष्ठम् (variṣṭham) - the most excellent; (accusative singular, superlative of vara) च (ca) - and; गरिष्ठम् (gariṣṭham) - the heaviest; (accusative singular, superlative of guru) च (ca) - and; क्रोधे (krodhe) - in wrath; (locative singular of krodha) वैवस्वतम् (vaivasvatam) - Yama; (accusative singular, son of Vivasvat) यथा (yathā) - like; (indeclinable);]
(I know you, O Vāyu, as the best of all life-bearers; the most excellent and the heaviest, and in wrath like Vaivasvata (Yama).)
I know you, O Vāyu, as the foremost among all beings who sustain life; you are the most excellent and the mightiest, and in anger, you are like Vaivasvata (Yama), the god of death.
एवं तु वचनं श्रुत्वा नारदस्य समीरणः। शल्मलिं तमुपागम्य क्रुद्धो वचनमब्रवीत् ॥१२-१५१-५॥
evaṃ tu vacanaṃ śrutvā nāradasya samīraṇaḥ। śalmaliṃ tamupāgamya kruddho vacanamabravīt ॥12-151-5॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; तु (tu) - but; वचनं (vacanam) - speech; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; नारदस्य (nāradasya) - of Nārada; समीरणः (samīraṇaḥ) - the Wind-god; शल्मलिं (śalmaliṃ) - the Śalmali tree; तम् (tam) - him/it; उपागम्य (upāgamya) - having approached; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; वचनम् (vacanam) - speech; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - spoke;]
(Thus but speech having heard of Nārada, the Wind-god, the Śalmali tree him having approached, angry, speech spoke.)
Having thus heard Nārada's words, the Wind-god, angry, approached the Śalmali tree and spoke.
शल्मले नारदे यत्तत्त्वयोक्तं मद्विगर्हणम्। अहं वायुः प्रभावं ते दर्शयाम्यात्मनो बलम् ॥१२-१५१-६॥
śalmale nārade yat tattva-yoktaṃ mad-vigarhaṇam। ahaṃ vāyuḥ prabhāvaṃ te darśayāmy ātmano balam ॥12-151-6॥
[शल्मले (śalmale) - O Śalmali tree; (vocative); नारदे (nārade) - O Nārada; (vocative); यत् (yat) - which; (relative pronoun); तत्त्व (tattva) - truth; essence; युक्तम् (yuktam) - joined; stated; मद् (mad) - my; विगर्हणम् (vigarhaṇam) - censure; reproach; अहम् (aham) - I; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - Vāyu; (wind god); प्रभावम् (prabhāvam) - power; influence; ते (te) - your; दर्शयामि (darśayāmi) - I will show; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of myself; of my own; बलम् (balam) - strength; power;]
(O Śalmali, O Nārada, that which was stated as truth, the censure of me— I, Vāyu, will show you the power of my own strength.)
O Śalmali and Nārada, regarding the reproach of me that was declared as truth, I, Vāyu, will now show you the power of my own strength.
नाहं त्वा नाभिजानामि विदितश्चासि मे द्रुम। पितामहः प्रजासर्गे त्वयि विश्रान्तवान्प्रभुः ॥१२-१५१-७॥
nāhaṃ tvā nābhijānāmi viditaścāsi me druma। pitāmahaḥ prajāsarge tvayi viśrāntavān prabhuḥ ॥12-151-7॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वा (tvā) - you; न (na) - not; अभिजानामि (abhijānāmi) - recognize; विदितः (viditaḥ) - known; च (ca) - and; असि (asi) - are; मे (me) - to me; द्रुम (druma) - tree; पितामहः (pitāmahaḥ) - grandfather; प्रजासर्गे (prajāsarge) - at the creation of beings; त्वयि (tvayi) - in you; विश्रान्तवान् (viśrāntavān) - rested; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(Not I you not recognize, known and are to me, tree. Grandfather at the creation of beings in you rested, the lord.)
I do not recognize you, but you are known to me, O tree. At the creation of beings, my grandfather, the lord, rested in you.
तस्य विश्रमणादेव प्रसादो यः कृतस्तव। रक्ष्यसे तेन दुर्बुद्धे नात्मवीर्याद्द्रुमाधम ॥१२-१५१-८॥
tasya viśramaṇādeva prasādo yaḥ kṛtastava| rakṣyase tena durbuddhe nātmavīryāddrumādhama ||12-151-8||
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; विश्रमणात् (viśramaṇāt) - from resting; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रसादः (prasādaḥ) - favor; यः (yaḥ) - which; कृतः (kṛtaḥ) - done; तव (tava) - for you; रक्ष्यसे (rakṣyase) - you are protected; तेन (tena) - by that; दुर्बुद्धे (durbuddhe) - O wicked-minded; न (na) - not; आत्मवीर्यात् (ātmavīryāt) - by own strength; द्रुमाधम (drumādhama) - O lowest of trees;]
(Of him, indeed from resting, the favor which is done for you, by that you are protected, O wicked-minded, not by own strength, O lowest of trees.)
The favor done for you by his resting alone protects you, O wicked-minded one, not your own strength, O lowest of trees.
यन्मा त्वमवजानीषे यथान्यं प्राकृतं तथा। दर्शयाम्येष आत्मानं यथा मामवभोत्स्यसे ॥१२-१५१-९॥
yanmā tvam avajānīṣe yathānyaṃ prākṛtaṃ tathā। darśayāmyeṣa ātmānaṃ yathā mām avabhotsyase ॥12-151-9॥
[यत् (yat) - which; मा (mā) - me; त्वम् (tvam) - you; अवजानीषे (avajānīṣe) - (you) disregard; यथा (yathā) - as; अन्यम् (anyam) - another; प्राकृतम् (prākṛtam) - ordinary; तथा (tathā) - so; दर्शयामि (darśayāmi) - I show; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; यथा (yathā) - so that; माम् (mām) - me; अवभोत्स्यसे (avabhotsyase) - (you) will understand;]
(Which me you disregard as another ordinary (person), so I show this self so that you will understand me.)
Because you have disregarded me as an ordinary person, I will now reveal my true self to you so that you may understand who I truly am.
एवमुक्तस्ततः प्राह शल्मलिः प्रहसन्निव। पवन त्वं वने क्रुद्धो दर्शयात्मानमात्मना ॥१२-१५१-१०॥
evam-uktas-tataḥ prāha śalmaliḥ prahasann-iva। pavana tvaṃ vane kruddho darśayātmānam-ātmanā ॥12-151-10॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्राह (prāha) - said; शल्मलिः (śalmaliḥ) - the silk-cotton tree; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; पवन (pavana) - O wind; त्वम् (tvaṃ) - you; वने (vane) - in the forest; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; दर्शय (darśaya) - show; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - yourself; आत्मना (ātmanā) - by yourself;]
(Thus having been spoken, then the silk-cotton tree, as if smiling, said: O wind, you, angry in the forest, show yourself by yourself.)
Thus addressed, the silk-cotton tree, as if smiling, said: "O Wind, if you are angry in the forest, show your true self by your own power."
मयि वै त्यज्यतां क्रोधः किं मे क्रुद्धः करिष्यसि। न ते बिभेमि पवन यद्यपि त्वं स्वयम्प्रभुः ॥१२-१५१-११॥
mayi vai tyajyatāṃ krodhaḥ kiṃ me kruddhaḥ kariṣyasi। na te bibhemi pavana yadyapi tvaṃ svayamprabhuḥ ॥12-151-11॥
[मयि (mayi) - in me; वै (vai) - indeed; त्यज्यताम् (tyajyatām) - let be abandoned; क्रोधः (krodhaḥ) - anger; किं (kiṃ) - what; मे (me) - to me; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; करिष्यसि (kariṣyasi) - will you do; न (na) - not; ते (te) - of you; बिभेमि (bibhemi) - I fear; पवन (pavana) - O Wind; यद्यपि (yadyapi) - even though; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; स्वयम्प्रभुः (svayamprabhuḥ) - self-lord;]
(In me indeed let anger be abandoned; what will you do to me being angry? I do not fear you, O Wind, even though you are self-lord.)
Let anger towards me be abandoned indeed; what can you do to me by being angry? I do not fear you, O Wind, even though you are your own master.
इत्येवमुक्तः पवनः श्व इत्येवाब्रवीद्वचः। दर्शयिष्यामि ते तेजस्ततो रात्रिरुपागमत् ॥१२-१५१-१२॥
ityevamuktaḥ pavanaḥ śva ityevābravīdvacaḥ। darśayiṣyāmi te tejas tato rātrirupāgamat ॥12-151-12॥
[इति (iti) - thus; एवम् (evam) - in this manner; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been spoken; पवनः (pavanaḥ) - the Wind (god); श्व (śva) - tomorrow; इति (iti) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; वचः (vacaḥ) - words; दर्शयिष्यामि (darśayiṣyāmi) - I will show; ते (te) - to you; तेजः (tejas) - splendor; ततः (tataḥ) - then; रात्रिः (rātriḥ) - night; उपागमत् (upāgamat) - approached;]
(Thus having been spoken, the Wind (god) said these words: "Tomorrow, indeed, I will show you the splendor." Then night approached.)
Thus addressed, the Wind (god) said: "Tomorrow, I will show you the splendor." Then night fell.
अथ निश्चित्य मनसा शल्मलिर्वातकारितम्। पश्यमानस्तदात्मानमसमं मातरिश्वनः ॥१२-१५१-१३॥
atha niścitya manasā śalmalir-vātakāritam। paśyamānas-tad-ātmānam-asamaṃ mātariśvanaḥ ॥12-151-13॥
[अथ (atha) - then; निश्चित्य (niścitya) - having ascertained; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; शल्मलिः (śalmaliḥ) - the silk-cotton tree; वातकारितम् (vātakāritam) - caused by the wind; पश्यमानः (paśyamānaḥ) - seeing; तत् (tat) - that; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; असमम् (asamaṃ) - unequal; मातरिश्वनः (mātariśvanaḥ) - the wind-god;]
(Then, having ascertained with the mind the silk-cotton tree caused by the wind, seeing that self as unequal, the wind-god.)
Then, having determined in his mind the silk-cotton tree shaken by the wind, the wind-god, seeing that self as unequal, (acted thus).
नारदे यन्मया प्रोक्तं पवनं प्रति तन्मृषा। असमर्थो ह्यहं वायोर्बलेन बलवान्हि सः ॥१२-१५१-१४॥
nārade yanmayā proktaṃ pavanaṃ prati tanmṛṣā। asamartho hyahaṃ vāyorbalena balavānhi saḥ ॥12-151-14॥
[नारदे (nārade) - O Nārada; यत् (yat) - which; मया (mayā) - by me; प्रोक्तं (proktaṃ) - spoken; पवनं (pavanaṃ) - to Vāyu; प्रति (prati) - towards; तत् (tat) - that; मृषा (mṛṣā) - false; असमर्थः (asamarthaḥ) - incapable; हि (hi) - indeed; अहम् (aham) - I; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of Vāyu; बलेन (balena) - by strength; बलवान् (balavān) - strong; हि (hi) - indeed; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(O Nārada, that which was spoken by me to Vāyu is false; indeed, I am incapable by strength of Vāyu, for he is indeed strong.)
O Nārada, what I told Vāyu was untrue; I am truly powerless compared to Vāyu's strength, for he is indeed powerful.
मारुतो बलवान्नित्यं यथैनं नारदोऽब्रवीत्। अहं हि दुर्बलोऽन्येभ्यो वृक्षेभ्यो नात्र संशयः ॥१२-१५१-१५॥
māruto balavān nityaṃ yathainaṃ nārado'bravīt। ahaṃ hi durbalo'nyebhyo vṛkṣebhyo nātra saṃśayaḥ ॥12-151-15॥
[मारुतः (mārutaḥ) - the wind; (son of Marut); बलवान् (balavān) - strong; powerful; नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; constantly; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; एनम् (enam) - him; this one; नारदः (nāradaḥ) - Nārada; (the sage Narada); अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; spoke; अहम् (aham) - I; हि (hi) - indeed; surely; दुर्बलः (durbalaḥ) - weak; feeble; अन्येभ्यः (anyebhyaḥ) - than others; वृक्षेभ्यः (vṛkṣebhyaḥ) - than the trees; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; in this; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt; uncertainty;]
(The wind is always strong, as Nārada said of him. I am indeed weaker than others, than the trees; there is no doubt about this.)
The wind is always powerful, as Nārada said. As for me, I am certainly weaker than others, weaker than the trees; there is no doubt about it.
किं तु बुद्ध्या समो नास्ति मम कश्चिद्वनस्पतिः। तदहं बुद्धिमास्थाय भयं मोक्ष्ये समीरणात् ॥१२-१५१-१६॥
kiṁ tu buddhyā samo nāsti mama kaścid vanaspatiḥ। tad ahaṁ buddhim āsthāya bhayaṁ mokṣye samīraṇāt॥12-151-16॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; तु (tu) - but; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; समः (samaḥ) - equal; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; मम (mama) - for me; कश्चित् (kaścit) - any; वनस्पतिः (vanaspatiḥ) - tree; तत् (tat) - therefore; अहम् (aham) - I; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - intellect; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having resorted to; भयम् (bhayam) - fear; मोक्ष्ये (mokṣye) - I shall free; समीरणात् (samīraṇāt) - from the wind;]
(What but by intellect equal there is not for me any tree. Therefore I, having resorted to intellect, fear I shall free from the wind.)
But there is no tree equal to my intellect. Therefore, I will rely on my intellect and free myself from the fear of the wind.
यदि तां बुद्धिमास्थाय चरेयुः पर्णिनो वने। अरिष्टाः स्युः सदा क्रुद्धात्पवनान्नात्र संशयः ॥१२-१५१-१७॥
yadi tāṃ buddhim āsthāya careyuḥ parṇino vane। ariṣṭāḥ syuḥ sadā kruddhāt pavanān nātra saṃśayaḥ ॥12-151-17॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; ताम् (tām) - that; बुद्धिम् (buddhim) - intellect; आस्थाय (āsthāya) - having adopted; चरेयुः (careyuḥ) - they should act; पर्णिनः (parṇinaḥ) - leaf-eaters; वने (vane) - in the forest; अरिष्टाः (ariṣṭāḥ) - unharmed; स्युः (syuḥ) - they would be; सदा (sadā) - always; क्रुद्धात् (kruddhāt) - from the enraged; पवनात् (pavanāt) - from the wind; न (na) - not; अत्र (atra) - here; संशयः (saṃśayaḥ) - doubt;]
(If, having adopted that intellect, the leaf-eaters should act in the forest, they would always be unharmed from the enraged wind; here, there is no doubt.)
If the leaf-eaters in the forest act with that wisdom, they will always be safe from the angry wind; there is no doubt about this.
तेऽत्र बाला न जानन्ति यथा नैनान्समीरणः। समीरयेत सङ्क्रुद्धो यथा जानाम्यहं तथा ॥१२-१५१-१८॥
te'tra bālā na jānanti yathā nainānsamīraṇaḥ। samīrayeta saṅkruddho yathā jānāmyahaṃ tathā ॥12-151-18॥
[ते (te) - they; अत्र (atra) - here; बाला (bālā) - children; (or) immature ones; न (na) - not; जानन्ति (jānanti) - know; यथा (yathā) - as; न (na) - not; एनान् (enān) - these (them); समीरणः (samīraṇaḥ) - wind; समीरयेत् (samīrayet) - would blow; सङ्क्रुद्धः (saṅkruddhaḥ) - very angry; यथा (yathā) - as; जानामि (jānāmi) - I know; अहम् (aham) - I; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(They here (are) children, do not know as the wind does not (know) these; (if) the wind, being very angry, would blow as I know, so (it would be).)
These here are children and do not know, just as the wind does not know them; if the wind, being very angry, were to blow as I know, so it would be.
ततो निश्चित्य मनसा शल्मलिः क्षुभितस्तदा। शाखाः स्कन्धान्प्रशाखाश्च स्वयमेव व्यशातयत् ॥१२-१५१-१९॥
tato niścitya manasā śalmaliḥ kṣubhitas tadā। śākhāḥ skandhān praśākhāś ca svayam eva vyaśātayat ॥12-151-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; निश्चित्य (niścitya) - having decided; मनसा (manasā) - with the mind; शल्मलिः (śalmaliḥ) - the silk-cotton tree; क्षुभितः (kṣubhitaḥ) - agitated; तदा (tadā) - then; शाखाः (śākhāḥ) - branches; स्कन्धान् (skandhān) - trunks; प्रशाखाः (praśākhāḥ) - sub-branches; च (ca) - and; स्वयम् (svayam) - by itself; एव (eva) - indeed; व्यशातयत् (vyaśātayat) - shook off;]
(Then, having decided with the mind, the silk-cotton tree, agitated at that time, by itself indeed shook off branches, trunks, and sub-branches.)
Then, having resolved in its mind, the agitated silk-cotton tree itself shook off its branches, trunks, and sub-branches.
स परित्यज्य शाखाश्च पत्राणि कुसुमानि च। प्रभाते वायुमायान्तं प्रत्यैक्षत वनस्पतिः ॥१२-१५१-२०॥
sa parityajya śākhāś ca patrāṇi kusumāni ca। prabhāte vāyum āyāntaṃ praty aikṣata vanaspatiḥ ॥12-151-20॥
[स (sa) - he; परित्यज्य (parityajya) - having abandoned; शाखाः (śākhāḥ) - branches; च (ca) - and; पत्राणि (patrāṇi) - leaves; कुसुमानि (kusumāni) - flowers; च (ca) - and; प्रभाते (prabhāte) - in the morning; वायुम् (vāyum) - wind; आयान्तम् (āyāntam) - approaching; प्रत्यैक्षत (praty aikṣata) - looked at; वनस्पतिः (vanaspatiḥ) - the tree;]
(He, having abandoned the branches and leaves and flowers, in the morning looked at the approaching wind, the tree.)
In the morning, the tree, having shed its branches, leaves, and flowers, looked at the approaching wind.
ततः क्रुद्धः श्वसन्वायुः पातयन्वै महाद्रुमान्। आजगामाथ तं देशं स्थितो यत्र स शल्मलिः ॥१२-१५१-२१॥
tataḥ kruddhaḥ śvasanvāyuḥ pātayanvai mahādrumāna। ājagāmātha taṃ deśaṃ sthito yatra sa śalmaliḥ ॥12-151-21॥

(Then, the angry wind, blowing, indeed causing great trees to fall, came to that place where that Śalmali tree was standing.)
Then, the furious wind, blowing violently and toppling great trees, arrived at the place where the Śalmali tree stood.
तं हीनपर्णं पतिताग्रशाखं; विशीर्णपुष्पं प्रसमीक्ष्य वायुः। उवाच वाक्यं स्मयमान एनं; मुदा युतं शल्मलिं रुग्णशाखम् ॥१२-१५१-२२॥

(Having observed him, deprived of leaves, with fallen top branches, scattered flowers, the wind, smiling, spoke words to him, to the silk-cotton tree with broken branches, endowed with joy.)
The wind, seeing the silk-cotton tree deprived of leaves, with fallen top branches and scattered flowers, joyfully and smilingly spoke these words to him, the tree with broken branches.
अहमप्येवमेव त्वां कुर्वाणः शल्मले रुषा। आत्मना यत्कृतं कृत्स्नं शाखानामपकर्षणम् ॥१२-१५१-२३॥

हीनपुष्पाग्रशाखस्त्वं शीर्णाङ्कुरपलाशवान्। आत्मदुर्मन्त्रितेनेह मद्वीर्यवशगोऽभवः ॥१२-१५१-२४॥

(You, with branches whose tips are deprived of flowers, possessing withered sprouts and leaves, here by your own evil counsel, became subject to my power.)
You, whose branches are deprived of flowers and whose sprouts and leaves are withered, have here, by your own misguided counsel, come under my power.
एतच्छ्रुत्वा वचो वायोः शल्मलिर्व्रीडितस्तदा। अतप्यत वचः स्मृत्वा नारदो यत्तदाब्रवीत् ॥१२-१५१-२५॥
etat-śrutvā vaco vāyoḥ śalmaliḥ vrīḍitaḥ tadā। atapyata vacaḥ smṛtvā nāradaḥ yat tadā abravīt ॥12-151-25॥

(Having heard these words of Vāyu, Śalmali then became ashamed. Remembering the words which Nārada had spoken then, he was tormented.)

एवं यो राजशार्दूल दुर्बलः सन्बलीयसा। वैरमासज्जते बालस्तप्यते शल्मलिर्यथा ॥१२-१५१-२६॥

(Thus, O tiger among kings, the weak, being with the stronger, attaches enmity; the child is tormented just as the silk-cotton tree (is scorched).)

तस्माद्वैरं न कुर्वीत दुर्बलो बलवत्तरैः। शोचेद्धि वैरं कुर्वाणो यथा वै शल्मलिस्तथा ॥१२-१५१-२७॥
tasmād vairaṃ na kurvīta durbalo balavattaraiḥ। śoced dhi vairaṃ kurvāṇo yathā vai śalmalis tathā ॥12-151-27॥

(Therefore, the weak should not make enmity with the stronger. Indeed, one who makes enmity should grieve, just as the silk-cotton tree (does).)

vairaṃ na kurvīta naro durbuddhirbuddhijīvinā। buddhirbuddhimato yāti tūleṣviva hutāśanaḥ ॥12-151-29॥
[वैरम् (vairaṃ) - enmity; न (na) - not; कुर्वीत (kurvīta) - should do; नरः (naraḥ) - man; दुर्बुद्धिः (durbuddhiḥ) - one of evil intellect; बुद्धिजीविना (buddhijīvinā) - by one living by intellect; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; बुद्धिमतः (buddhimataḥ) - of the wise; याति (yāti) - goes; तूलेषु (tūleṣu) - among cotton; इव (iva) - like; हुताशनः (hutāśanaḥ) - fire;]
(Enmity not should do man one of evil intellect by one living by intellect. Intellect of the wise goes among cotton like fire.)
A man of evil intellect should not make enmity with one who lives by intellect. The intellect of the wise moves among obstacles like fire through cotton.
न हि बुद्ध्या समं किञ्चिद्विद्यते पुरुषे नृप। तथा बलेन राजेन्द्र न समोऽस्तीति चिन्तयेत् ॥१२-१५१-३०॥
na hi buddhyā samaṃ kiñcid vidyate puruṣe nṛpa। tathā balena rājendra na samo'stīti cintayet ॥12-151-30॥

(Not indeed by intellect is anything equal found in a person, O king; likewise by strength, O king of kings, one should think that there is no equal thus.)
O king, truly, nothing in a person is equal to intellect; likewise, O king of kings, one should consider that there is no equal to strength.
तस्मात्क्षमेत बालाय जडाय बधिराय च। बलाधिकाय राजेन्द्र तद्दृष्टं त्वयि शत्रुहन् ॥१२-१५१-३१॥
tasmātkṣameta bālāya jaḍāya badhirāya ca। balādhikāya rājendra taddṛṣṭaṃ tvayi śatruhan ॥12-151-31॥
