पार्थिवं धातुमाश्रित्य शारीरोऽग्निः कथं भवेत्। अवकाशविशेषेण कथं वर्तयतेऽनिलः ॥१२-१७८-१॥
pārthivaṃ dhātumāśritya śārīro'gnḥ kathaṃ bhavet। avakāśaviśeṣeṇa kathaṃ vartayate'nilaḥ ॥12-178-1॥

वायोर्गतिमहं ब्रह्मन्कीर्तयिष्यामि तेऽनघ। प्राणिनामनिलो देहान्यथा चेष्टयते बली ॥१२-१७८-२॥
vāyorgatimahaṃ brahmankīrtayiṣyāmi te'nagha। prāṇināmanilo dehānyathā ceṣṭayate balī ॥12-178-2॥
[वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of the wind; गतिम् (gatim) - movement; अहम् (aham) - I; ब्रह्मन् (brahman) - O Brahman; कीर्तयिष्यामि (kīrtayiṣyāmi) - shall describe; ते (te) - to you; अनघ (anagha) - O sinless one; प्राणिनाम् (prāṇinām) - of living beings; अनिलः (anilaḥ) - the wind; देहानि (dehāni) - bodies; अथ (atha) - then; चेष्टयते (ceṣṭayate) - moves; बली (balī) - the powerful one;]
(Of the wind the movement I, O Brahman, shall describe to you, O sinless one. Of living beings the wind the bodies then moves, the powerful one.)
O Brahman, I shall describe to you the movement of the wind, O sinless one. The powerful wind moves the bodies of living beings.
श्रितो मूर्धानमग्निस्तु शरीरं परिपालयन्। प्राणो मूर्धनि चाग्नौ च वर्तमानो विचेष्टते ॥१२-१७८-३॥

स जन्तुः सर्वभूतात्मा पुरुषः स सनातनः। मनो बुद्धिरहङ्कारो भूतानि विषयाश्च सः ॥१२-१७८-४॥
sa jantuḥ sarvabhūtātmā puruṣaḥ sa sanātanaḥ। mano buddhirahaṅkāro bhūtāni viṣayāśca saḥ ॥12-178-4॥

(He, the creature, the self of all beings, the person, he is eternal. Mind, intellect, ego, elements, objects and he.)

एवं त्विह स सर्वत्र प्राणेन परिपाल्यते। पृष्ठतश्च समानेन स्वां स्वां गतिमुपाश्रितः ॥१२-१७८-५॥

वस्तिमूलं गुदं चैव पावकं च समाश्रितः। वहन्मूत्रं पुरीषं चाप्यपानः परिवर्तते ॥१२-१७८-६॥
vastimūlaṃ gudaṃ caiva pāvakaṃ ca samāśritaḥ। vahanmūtraṃ purīṣaṃ cāpyapānaḥ parivartate ॥12-178-6॥

(The apāna (downward-moving vital air), having resorted to the base of the bladder, the anus, and indeed the digestive fire, carrying urine and feces, also moves about.)

प्रयत्ने कर्मणि बले य एकस्त्रिषु वर्तते। उदान इति तं प्राहुरध्यात्मविदुषो जनाः ॥१२-१७८-७॥
prayatne karmaṇi bale ya ekastriṣu vartate। udāna iti taṃ prāhuradhyātmaviduṣo janāḥ ॥12-178-7॥
[प्रयत्ने (prayatne) - in effort; कर्मणि (karmaṇi) - in action; बले (bale) - in strength; यः (yaḥ) - who; एकस्त्रिषु (ekastriṣu) - one in the three; वर्तते (vartate) - abides; उदान (udāna) - udāna (vital air); इति (iti) - thus; तम् (tam) - him; प्राहुः (prāhuḥ) - they call; अध्यात्मविदुषः (adhyātmaviduṣaḥ) - knowers of the self; जनाः (janāḥ) - people;]
(In effort, in action, in strength, who abides as one in the three, him the knowers of the self call 'udāna'.)

सन्धिष्वपि च सर्वेषु संनिविष्टस्तथानिलः। शरीरेषु मनुष्याणां व्यान इत्युपदिश्यते ॥१२-१७८-८॥
sandhiṣv api ca sarveṣu saṃniviṣṭas tathānilaḥ। śarīreṣu manuṣyāṇāṃ vyāna ity upadiśyate ॥12-178-8॥
[सन्धिषु (sandhiṣu) - in the joints; अपि (api) - also; च (ca) - and; सर्वेषु (sarveṣu) - in all; संनिविष्टः (saṃniviṣṭaḥ) - entered; तथा (tathā) - likewise; अनिलः (anilaḥ) - wind; शरीरेषु (śarīreṣu) - in the bodies; मनुष्याणाम् (manuṣyāṇām) - of men; व्यानः (vyānaḥ) - Vyāna; इति (iti) - thus; उपदिश्यते (upadiśyate) - is taught;]
(In the joints also and in all, entered likewise the wind; in the bodies of men, Vyāna thus is taught.)
It is taught that the wind called Vyāna, having entered all the joints and the entire body, is present in the bodies of men.
धातुष्वग्निस्तु विततः समानेन समीरितः। रसान्धातूंश्च दोषांश्च वर्तयन्नवतिष्ठति ॥१२-१७८-९॥
dhātuṣv agnis tu vitataḥ samānena samīritaḥ। rasān dhātūṃś ca doṣāṃś ca vartayan navatiṣṭhati ॥12-178-9॥

(In the elements, fire but spread, by samāna stimulated, essences and the elements and the doṣas causing to move, remains.)
The fire present in the elements, being spread and stimulated by samāna, remains while causing the movement of essences, elements, and doṣas.
अपानप्राणयोर्मध्ये प्राणापानसमाहितः। समन्वितः स्वधिष्ठानः सम्यक्पचति पावकः ॥१२-१७८-१०॥
apānaprāṇayor madhye prāṇāpānasamāhitaḥ। samanvitaḥ svadhiṣṭhānaḥ samyak pacati pāvakaḥ ॥12-178-10॥
[अपान (apāna) - downward-breath; प्राणयोः (prāṇayoḥ) - of the vital-breaths; मध्ये (madhye) - in the midst; प्राणापान (prāṇāpāna) - vital-breath and downward-breath; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - united; समन्वितः (samanvitaḥ) - endowed; स्वधिष्ठानः (svadhiṣṭhānaḥ) - with own seat; सम्यक् (samyak) - properly; पचति (pacati) - cooks; पावकः (pāvakaḥ) - fire;]
(In the midst of apāna and prāṇa, united with prāṇa and apāna, endowed with its own seat, the fire properly cooks.)
The fire, situated between apāna and prāṇa, united with both and established in its own seat, properly digests (food).
आस्यं हि पायुसंयुक्तमन्ते स्याद्गुदसञ्ज्ञितम्। स्रोतस्तस्मात्प्रजायन्ते सर्वस्रोतांसि देहिनाम् ॥१२-१७८-११॥
āsyaṃ hi pāyusaṃyuktamante syādgudasañjñitam। srotastasmātprajāyante sarvasrotāṃsi dehinām ॥12-178-11॥

(The mouth, indeed, joined with the anus at the end, is called 'guda' (anus); from that channel arise all channels of embodied beings.)

(From the coming together of the vital energies, conjunction arises. Heat and fire—thus should it be known—which cooks the food of embodied beings.)
Conjunction arises from the union of the vital energies. The heat, known as fire, is that which cooks the food for embodied beings.
अग्निवेगवहः प्राणो गुदान्ते प्रतिहन्यते। स ऊर्ध्वमागम्य पुनः समुत्क्षिपति पावकम् ॥१२-१७८-१३॥
agnivegavahaḥ prāṇo gudānte pratihanyate। sa ūrdhvamāgamya punaḥ samutkṣipati pāvakam ॥12-178-13॥
[अग्नि (agni) - fire; वेग (vega) - speed; वहः (vahaḥ) - carrier; प्राणः (prāṇaḥ) - breath; गुदान्ते (gudānte) - at the end of the rectum; प्रतिहन्यते (pratihanyate) - is struck; सः (saḥ) - he; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; आगम्य (āgamya) - having come; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; समुत्क्षिपति (samutkṣipati) - raises up; पावकम् (pāvakam) - fire;]
(The breath, carrier of the speed of fire, is struck at the end of the rectum. He, having come upwards again, raises up the fire.)
The breath, which carries the force of fire, is checked at the end of the rectum; then, rising upwards again, it lifts the fire.
पक्वाशयस्त्वधो नाभेरूर्ध्वमामाशयः स्थितः। नाभिमध्ये शरीरस्य सर्वे प्राणाः समाहिताः ॥१२-१७८-१४॥
pakvāśayas tv adho nābher ūrdhvam āmāśayaḥ sthitaḥ। nābhimadhye śarīrasya sarve prāṇāḥ samāhitāḥ॥12-178-14॥
[पक्वाशयः (pakvāśayaḥ) - the large intestine; तु (tu) - but; अधः (adhaḥ) - below; नाभेः (nābheḥ) - of the navel; ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - above; आमाशयः (āmāśayaḥ) - the stomach; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - is situated; नाभि-मध्ये (nābhi-madhye) - in the middle of the navel; शरीरस्य (śarīrasya) - of the body; सर्वे (sarve) - all; प्राणाः (prāṇāḥ) - vital energies; समाहिताः (samāhitāḥ) - are collected;]
(The large intestine, however, is below the navel; above (the navel) is the stomach, which is situated. In the middle of the navel of the body, all the vital energies are collected.)

प्रसृता हृदयात्सर्वे तिर्यगूर्ध्वमधस्तथा। वहन्त्यन्नरसान्नाड्यो दश प्राणप्रचोदिताः ॥१२-१७८-१५॥
prasṛtā hṛdayātsarve tiryagūrdhvamadhastathā। vahantyannarasānnāḍyo daśa prāṇapracoditāḥ ॥12-178-15॥

[एष (eṣa) - this; मार्गः (mārgaḥ) - path; अथ (atha) - then; योगानाम् (yogānām) - of the yogas; येन (yena) - by which; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - they go; तत् (tat) - that; पदम् (padam) - state; जितक्लमासनाः (jitaklamāsanāḥ) - those who have conquered fatigue and seat; धीराः (dhīrāḥ) - steadfast ones; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on the head; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; आदधुः (ādadhuḥ) - placed;]
(This path then of the yogas, by which they go to that state. Those who have conquered fatigue and seat, the steadfast ones, placed the self on the head.)

(Thus, in all (beings), established in the prāṇa and apāna of embodied beings, in that (body) always the fire is situated, like (fire) contained in a vessel.)
