यदि प्राणायते वायुर्वायुरेव विचेष्टते। श्वसित्याभाषते चैव तस्माज्जीवो निरर्थकः ॥१२-१७९-१॥
yadi prāṇāyate vāyur vāyur eva viceṣṭate। śvasity ābhāṣate caiva tasmāj jīvo nirarthakaḥ ॥12-179-1॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; प्राणायते (prāṇāyate) - breathes; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; एव (eva) - indeed; विचेष्टते (viceṣṭate) - acts; श्वसिति (śvasiti) - breathes; आभाषते (ābhāṣate) - speaks; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; जीवः (jīvaḥ) - living being; निरर्थकः (nirarthakaḥ) - meaningless;]
(If wind breathes, wind indeed acts. Breathes, speaks and indeed, therefore the living being is meaningless.)
If it is merely the wind that breathes, acts, breathes, and speaks, then the living being is meaningless.
यद्यूष्मभाव आग्नेयो वह्निना पच्यते यदि। अग्निर्जरयते चैव तस्माज्जीवो निरर्थकः ॥१२-१७९-२॥
yadyūṣmabhāva āgneyo vahninā pacyate yadi। agnir jarayate caiva tasmāj jīvo nirarthakaḥ ॥12-179-2॥
[यद् (yad) - if; यूष्मभावः (yūṣmabhāvaḥ) - heat-nature; आग्नेयः (āgneyaḥ) - fiery; वह्निना (vahninā) - by fire; पच्यते (pacyate) - is cooked; यदि (yadi) - if; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; जरयते (jarayate) - consumes; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; जीवः (jīvaḥ) - living being; निरर्थकः (nirarthakaḥ) - useless;]
(If the heat-nature, fiery, is cooked by fire, if fire indeed consumes, therefore the living being is useless.)
If the fiery nature is cooked by fire, and fire indeed consumes, then the living being is rendered useless.
जन्तोः प्रमीयमाणस्य जीवो नैवोपलभ्यते। वायुरेव जहात्येनमूष्मभावश्च नश्यति ॥१२-१७९-३॥
jantoḥ pramīyamāṇasya jīvo naivopalabhyate। vāyureva jahātyenamūṣmabhāvaśca naśyati ॥12-179-3॥
[जन्तोः (jantoḥ) - of the creature; प्रमीयमाणस्य (pramīyamāṇasya) - of the one being destroyed; जीवः (jīvaḥ) - life-principle; न (na) - not; एव (eva) - indeed; उपलभ्यते (upalabhyate) - is perceived; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - air; एव (eva) - indeed; जहाति (jahāti) - leaves; एनम् (enam) - this (body); ऊष्मभावः (ūṣmabhāvaḥ) - warmth; च (ca) - and; नश्यति (naśyati) - perishes;]
(Of the creature being destroyed, the life-principle is not at all perceived. Only the air leaves this (body), and the warmth also perishes.)
When a creature is dying, the life-principle is not perceived at all. Only the air departs from the body, and its warmth is lost.
यदि वातोपमो जीवः संश्लेषो यदि वायुना। वायुमण्डलवद्दृश्यो गच्छेत्सह मरुद्गणैः ॥१२-१७९-४॥
yadi vātopamo jīvaḥ saṃśleṣo yadi vāyunā। vāyumaṇḍalavaddṛśyo gacchetsaha marudgaṇaiḥ ॥12-179-4॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; वात-उपमः (vāta-upamaḥ) - like wind; जीवः (jīvaḥ) - living being; संश्लेषः (saṃśleṣaḥ) - union; यदि (yadi) - if; वायुना (vāyunā) - by wind; वायु-मण्डलवत् (vāyu-maṇḍalavat) - like the sphere of wind; दृश्यः (dṛśyaḥ) - visible; गच्छेत् (gacchet) - should go; सह (saha) - with; मरुत्-गणैः (marut-gaṇaiḥ) - with the groups of winds;]
(If the living being is like wind, if union is by wind, (then) like the sphere of wind, (he) should go visible with the groups of winds.)
If the living being is like wind and his union is with the wind, then, like the sphere of wind, he should be seen going together with the groups of winds.
श्लेषो यदि च वातेन यदि तस्मात्प्रणश्यति। महार्णवविमुक्तत्वादन्यत्सलिलभाजनम् ॥१२-१७९-५॥
śleṣo yadi ca vātena yadi tasmāt praṇaśyati। mahārṇavavimuktatvād anyat salilabhājanam ॥12-179-5॥
[श्लेषः (śleṣaḥ) - adhesion; यदि (yadi) - if; च (ca) - and; वातेन (vātena) - by wind; यदि (yadi) - if; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; प्रणश्यति (praṇaśyati) - is destroyed; महार्णव (mahārṇava) - great ocean; विमुक्तत्वात् (vimuktatvāt) - from being free; अन्यत् (anyat) - another; सलिलभाजनम् (salilabhājanam) - water vessel;]
(Adhesion, if by wind, if therefore is destroyed. From being free of the great ocean, another water vessel.)
If adhesion is destroyed by the wind, then, being free from the great ocean, it becomes another water vessel.
कूपे वा सलिलं दद्यात्प्रदीपं वा हुताशने। प्रक्षिप्तं नश्यति क्षिप्रं यथा नश्यत्यसौ तथा ॥१२-१७९-६॥
kūpe vā salilaṃ dadyāt pradīpaṃ vā hutāśane। prakṣiptaṃ naśyati kṣipraṃ yathā naśyaty asau tathā॥12-179-6॥
[कूपे (kūpe) - in a well; वा (vā) - or; सलिलं (salilaṃ) - water; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - one may give; प्रदीपं (pradīpaṃ) - a lamp; वा (vā) - or; हुताशने (hutāśane) - in fire; प्रक्षिप्तं (prakṣiptaṃ) - thrown; नश्यति (naśyati) - is destroyed; क्षिप्रं (kṣipraṃ) - quickly; यथा (yathā) - just as; नश्यति (naśyati) - perishes; असौ (asau) - this; तथा (tathā) - so;]
(In a well or water one may give, a lamp or in fire; thrown is destroyed quickly, just as this perishes, so.)
Just as water poured into a well or a lamp thrown into fire is quickly destroyed, so too does this perish.
पञ्चसाधारणे ह्यस्मिञ्शरीरे जीवितं कुतः। येषामन्यतरत्यागाच्चतुर्णां नास्ति सङ्ग्रहः ॥१२-१७९-७॥
pañcasādhāraṇe hy asmiñ śarīre jīvitaṃ kutaḥ। yeṣām anyataratyāgāc caturṇāṃ nāsti saṅgrahaḥ ॥12-179-7॥
[पञ्चसाधारणे (pañcasādhāraṇe) - in the five common (elements); हि (hi) - indeed; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; शरीरे (śarīre) - body; जीवितं (jīvitaṃ) - life; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; येषाम् (yeṣām) - of which; अन्यतरत्यागात् (anyataratyāgāt) - from the abandonment of any one; चतुर्णाम् (caturṇām) - of the four; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; सङ्ग्रहः (saṅgrahaḥ) - combination;]
(In the five common (elements), indeed, in this body, from where is life? Of which, from the abandonment of any one of the four, there is no combination.)
In this body composed of five common elements, how can there be life? If any one of the four is abandoned, there is no combination (no life remains).
नश्यन्त्यापो ह्यनाहाराद्वायुरुच्छ्वासनिग्रहात्। नश्यते कोष्ठभेदात्खमग्निर्नश्यत्यभोजनात् ॥१२-१७९-८॥
naśyanty āpo hy anāhārād vāyur ucchvāsa-nigrahāt। naśyate koṣṭha-bhedāt kham agnir naśyaty abhojanāt॥12-179-8॥
[नश्यन्ति (naśyanti) - perish; आपः (āpaḥ) - waters; हि (hi) - indeed; अनाहारात् (anāhārāt) - from lack of food; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - air; उच्छ्वास (ucchvāsa) - exhalation; निग्रहात् (nigrahāt) - from restraint; नश्यते (naśyate) - perishes; कोष्ठभेदात् (koṣṭha-bhedāt) - from rupture of the cavity; खम् (kham) - space; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; नश्यति (naśyati) - perishes; अभोजनात् (abhojanāt) - from not eating;]
(Waters perish indeed from lack of food; air (perishes) from restraint of exhalation; fire in the space perishes from rupture of the cavity; (and) from not eating.)
Waters perish from lack of nourishment; air perishes from restraint of breath; fire in the body perishes from rupture of the cavity; and all perish from not eating.
व्याधिव्रणपरिक्लेशैर्मेदिनी चैव शीर्यते। पीडितेऽन्यतरे ह्येषां सङ्घातो याति पञ्चधा ॥१२-१७९-९॥
vyādhi-vraṇa-parikleśair medinī caiva śīryate। pīḍite'nyatare hyeṣāṃ saṅghāto yāti pañcadhā॥12-179-9॥
[व्याधि (vyādhi) - disease; व्रण (vraṇa) - wound; परिक्लेशैः (parikleśaiḥ) - by torments; मेदिनी (medinī) - the earth; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शीर्यते (śīryate) - is decayed; पीडिते (pīḍite) - when afflicted; अन्यतरे (anyatare) - either one; हि (hi) - indeed; एषाम् (eṣām) - of these; सङ्घातः (saṅghātaḥ) - the aggregate; याति (yāti) - goes; पञ्चधा (pañcadhā) - into fivefold; ॥१२-१७९-९॥ (॥12-179-9॥) - (verse number; no meaning);]
(By diseases, wounds, and torments, the earth indeed is decayed. When either one of these is afflicted, the aggregate indeed goes into fivefold.)
The earth is worn away by diseases, wounds, and torments. When either of these is afflicted, the whole aggregate is divided into five parts.
तस्मिन्पञ्चत्वमापन्ने जीवः किमनुधावति। किं वेदयति वा जीवः किं शृणोति ब्रवीति वा ॥१२-१७९-१०॥
tasmin pañcatvam āpanne jīvaḥ kim anudhāvati। kiṃ vedayati vā jīvaḥ kiṃ śṛṇoti bravīti vā ॥12-179-10॥
[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; पञ्चत्वम् (pañcatvam) - state of dissolution (death); आपन्ने (āpanne) - having attained; जीवः (jīvaḥ) - the living being; किम् (kim) - what; अनुधावति (anudhāvati) - pursues; किम् (kim) - what; वेदयति (vedayati) - perceives; वा (vā) - or; जीवः (jīvaḥ) - the living being; किम् (kim) - what; शृणोति (śṛṇoti) - hears; ब्रवीति (bravīti) - speaks; वा (vā) - or;]
(In that (state) having attained dissolution, what does the living being pursue? What does the living being perceive or what does he hear or speak?)
When dissolution has occurred, what does the living being pursue? What does he perceive, or what does he hear or say?
एषा गौः परलोकस्थं तारयिष्यति मामिति। यो दत्त्वा म्रियते जन्तुः सा गौः कं तारयिष्यति ॥१२-१७९-११॥
eṣā gauḥ paralokasthaṃ tārayiṣyati mām iti। yo dattvā mriyate jantuḥ sā gauḥ kaṃ tārayiṣyati ॥12-179-11॥
[एषा (eṣā) - this (feminine); गौः (gauḥ) - cow; परलोकस्थं (paralokastham) - situated in the other world; तारयिष्यति (tārayiṣyati) - will cause to cross; माम् (mām) - me; इति (iti) - thus; यो (yo) - who; दत्त्वा (dattvā) - having given; म्रियते (mriyate) - dies; जन्तुः (jantuḥ) - creature; सा (sā) - that (feminine); गौः (gauḥ) - cow; कं (kaṃ) - whom; तारयिष्यति (tārayiṣyati) - will cause to cross;]
(This cow, situated in the other world, will cause me to cross—thus. The creature who, having given (the cow), dies, that cow—whom will she cause to cross?)
"This cow will help me cross over to the next world." But if a creature dies after giving away the cow, whom will that cow help to cross over?
गौश्च प्रतिग्रहीता च दाता चैव समं यदा। इहैव विलयं यान्ति कुतस्तेषां समागमः ॥१२-१७९-१२॥
gauś ca pratigrahītā ca dātā caiva samaṃ yadā। ihaiva vilayaṃ yānti kutas teṣāṃ samāgamaḥ ॥12-179-12॥
[गौः (gauḥ) - cow; च (ca) - and; प्रतिग्रहीता (pratigrahītā) - receiver; च (ca) - and; दाता (dātā) - giver; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; समम् (samam) - together; यदा (yadā) - when; इह (iha) - here; एव (eva) - indeed; विलयम् (vilayam) - dissolution; यान्ति (yānti) - go; कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; तेषाम् (teṣām) - of them; समागमः (samāgamaḥ) - union; ॥१२-१७९-१२॥ (॥12-179-12॥) - ;]
(Cow and receiver and giver and indeed together when here indeed dissolution go from where of them union;)
When the cow, the receiver, and the giver all together meet their dissolution here itself, how can there be any union among them?
विहगैरुपयुक्तस्य शैलाग्रात्पतितस्य वा। अग्निना चोपयुक्तस्य कुतः सञ्जीवनं पुनः ॥१२-१७९-१३॥
vihagairupayuktasya śailāgrātpititasya vā। agninā copayuktasya kutaḥ sañjīvanaṃ punaḥ ॥12-179-13॥
[विहगैः (vihagaiḥ) - by birds; उपयुक्तस्य (upayuktasya) - eaten; (consumed;) शैलाग्रात् (śailāgrāt) - from the mountain peak; पतितस्य (patitasya) - fallen; वा (vā) - or; अग्निना (agninā) - by fire; च (ca) - and; उपयुक्तस्य (upayuktasya) - eaten; (consumed;) कुतः (kutaḥ) - from where; सञ्जीवनम् (sañjīvanam) - revival; (restoration to life;) पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(By birds eaten, from the mountain peak fallen, or by fire and eaten, from where revival again?)
How can there be revival again for one who has been eaten by birds, fallen from the mountain peak, or consumed by fire?
छिन्नस्य यदि वृक्षस्य न मूलं प्रतिरोहति। बीजान्यस्य प्रवर्तन्ते मृतः क्व पुनरेष्यति ॥१२-१७९-१४॥
chinnasya yadi vṛkṣasya na mūlaṃ pratirohati। bījānyasya pravartante mṛtaḥ kva punareṣyati ॥12-179-14॥
[छिन्नस्य (chinnasya) - of the cut; यदि (yadi) - if; वृक्षस्य (vṛkṣasya) - of the tree; न (na) - not; मूलं (mūlam) - root; प्रतिरोहति (pratirohati) - grows again; बीजानि (bījāni) - seeds; अस्य (asya) - of it; प्रवर्तन्ते (pravartante) - proceed; मृतः (mṛtaḥ) - dead; क्व (kva) - where; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; एष्यति (eṣyati) - will come;]
(Of the cut (tree), if the root does not grow again, its seeds proceed; the dead, where will he come again?)
If the root of a cut tree does not grow again, its seeds will continue; but if one is dead, where will he return again?
बीजमात्रं पुरा सृष्टं यदेतत्परिवर्तते। मृता मृताः प्रणश्यन्ति बीजाद्बीजं प्रवर्तते ॥१२-१७९-१५॥
bījamātraṃ purā sṛṣṭaṃ yad etat parivartate। mṛtā mṛtāḥ praṇaśyanti bījād bījaṃ pravartate ॥12-179-15॥
[बीजमात्रं (bījamātram) - seed alone; only the seed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; in the beginning; सृष्टं (sṛṣṭam) - created; यत् (yat) - which; एतत् (etat) - this; परिवर्तते (parivartate) - revolves; changes; मृता (mṛtā) - dead (feminine singular); मृताः (mṛtāḥ) - dead (masculine plural); प्रणश्यन्ति (praṇaśyanti) - perish; are destroyed; बीजात् (bījāt) - from the seed; बीजं (bījam) - seed; प्रवर्तते (pravartate) - proceeds; comes forth;]
(Only the seed was formerly created, which this revolves. The dead perish, from the seed, seed proceeds.)
In the beginning, only the seed was created; this entire cycle revolves thus. The dead perish, but from the seed, another seed arises.
