शतक्रतुरथापश्यद्बलेर्दीप्तां महात्मनः। स्वरूपिणीं शरीराद्धि तदा निष्क्रामतीं श्रियम् ॥१२-२१८-१॥
śatakratur athāpaśyad baler dīptāṃ mahātmanaḥ। svarūpiṇīṃ śarīrād dhi tadā niṣkrāmatīṃ śriyam ॥12-218-1॥
[शतक्रतु (śatakratu) - Indra; अथ (atha) - then; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - saw; बलेः (baleḥ) - of Bali; दीप्ताम् (dīptām) - shining; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; स्वरूपिणीम् (svarūpiṇīm) - in her own form; शरीरात् (śarīrāt) - from the body; हि (hi) - indeed; तदा (tadā) - then; निष्क्रामतीम् (niṣkrāmatīm) - emerging; श्रियं (śriyam) - Śrī (Goddess of Fortune);]

तां दीप्तां प्रभया दृष्ट्वा भगवान्पाकशासनः। विस्मयोत्फुल्लनयनो बलिं पप्रच्छ वासवः ॥१२-२१८-२॥

बले केयमपक्रान्ता रोचमाना शिखण्डिनी। त्वत्तः स्थिता सकेयूरा दीप्यमाना स्वतेजसा ॥१२-२१८-३॥

Who are you, standing here like an illusion, radiant with your own splendor? O beautiful-browed one, having left the lord of the Daityas, tell me the truth about this.

na mā virocano veda na mā vairocano baliḥ। āhur māṃ duḥsahety evaṃ vidhitseti ca māṃ viduḥ॥12-218-7॥

Neither Virocana nor Bali, the son of Virocana, knows me; they say I am hard to bear, and thus, those who desire to know, know me so.
भूतिर्लक्ष्मीति मामाहुः श्रीरित्येवं च वासव। त्वं मां शक्र न जानीषे सर्वे देवा न मां विदुः ॥१२-२१८-८॥
bhūtir lakṣmīti mām āhuḥ śrīr ity evaṃ ca vāsava। tvaṃ māṃ śakra na jānīṣe sarve devā na māṃ viduḥ ॥12-218-8॥

(They call me prosperity, Lakshmi, and fortune, so, O Indra. You, O Śakra, do not know me; all the gods do not know me.)
People call me prosperity, Lakshmi, and fortune, O Indra. But you, O Śakra, do not know me; nor do any of the gods know me.

kimidaṃ tvaṃ mama kṛte utāho balinaḥ kṛte। duḥsahe vijahāsyenaṃ cirasaṃvāsinī satī ॥12-218-9॥

(What is this, you, for my sake, or rather for the sake of the powerful? To the unbearable, you wish to abandon him, being a long-time dweller with (him).)
What is this—are you doing this for my sake, or for the sake of the powerful? Are you, who have long lived with him, now wishing to abandon him in this unbearable situation?

na dhātā na vidhātā māṃ vidadhāti kathañcana। kālastu śakra paryāyānmainaṃ śakrāvamanyathāḥ ॥12-218-10॥

Neither the supporter nor the creator appoints me in any way. It is Time alone, O Indra, through cycles; O Indra, do not disregard this one (me).

kathaṁ tvayā balis tyaktaḥ kimarthaṁ vā śikhaṇḍini| kathaṁ ca māṁ na jahyās tvaṁ tan me brūhi śucismite ॥12-218-11॥

(How by you Bali was abandoned, for what reason, O Śikhaṇḍinī? How also me not would you abandon, you? That to me tell, O pure-smiling one.)
O Śucismitā, tell me: How was Bali abandoned by you, for what reason, O Śikhaṇḍinī? And how is it that you would not abandon me? Please tell me that.

सत्ये स्थितास्मि दाने च व्रते तपसि चैव हि। पराक्रमे च धर्मे च पराचीनस्ततो बलिः ॥१२-२१८-१२॥
satye sthitāsmi dāne ca vrate tapasi caiva hi। parākrame ca dharme ca parācīnastato baliḥ ॥12-218-12॥
[सत्ये (satye) - in truth; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - established; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; दाने (dāne) - in giving; च (ca) - and; व्रते (vrate) - in vow; तपसि (tapasi) - in austerity; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - surely; पराक्रमे (parākrame) - in valor; च (ca) - and; धर्मे (dharme) - in righteousness; च (ca) - and; पराचीनः (parācīnaḥ) - ancient; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore; बलिः (baliḥ) - Bali;]
(In truth established I am, in giving and in vow, in austerity indeed surely, in valor and in righteousness and ancient therefore Bali.)
I am established in truth, in charity, in vows, and in austerity indeed; in valor and in righteousness as well, therefore Bali is ancient.
ब्रह्मण्योऽयं सदा भूत्वा सत्यवादी जितेन्द्रियः। अभ्यसूयद्ब्राह्मणान्वै उच्छिष्टश्चास्पृशद्घृतम् ॥१२-२१८-१३॥
brahmaṇyo'yaṃ sadā bhūtvā satyavādī jitendriyaḥ। abhyasūyadbrāhmaṇānvai ucchiṣṭaścāspṛśadghṛtam ॥12-218-13॥
[ब्रह्मण्यः (brahmaṇyaḥ) - devoted to Brahman; spirit of sacred knowledge; अयम् (ayam) - this (person); सदा (sadā) - always; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; सत्यवादी (satyavādī) - speaker of truth; जितेन्द्रियः (jitendriyaḥ) - one who has conquered the senses; अभ्यसूयत् (abhyasūyat) - envied; bore ill-will; ब्राह्मणान् (brāhmaṇān) - Brāhmaṇas; वै (vai) - indeed; उच्छिष्टः (ucchiṣṭaḥ) - defiled by remnants (of food); च (ca) - and; अस्पृशत् (aspṛśat) - did not touch; घृतम् (ghṛtam) - clarified butter;]
(Devoted to Brahman, this (person), always having become, speaker of truth, one who has conquered the senses, envied Brāhmaṇas indeed, defiled by remnants (of food), and did not touch clarified butter.)
Although always devoted to Brahman, truthful, and self-controlled, he envied Brāhmaṇas, and being defiled by food remnants, did not touch clarified butter.
यज्ञशीलः पुरा भूत्वा मामेव यजतेत्ययम्। प्रोवाच लोकान्मूढात्मा कालेनोपनिपीडितः ॥१२-२१८-१४॥
yajñaśīlaḥ purā bhūtvā māmeva yajatetayam। provāca lokānmūḍhātmā kālenopanipīḍitaḥ ॥12-218-14॥
[यज्ञशीलः (yajñaśīlaḥ) - one whose nature is sacrifice; पुरा (purā) - formerly; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; माम् (mām) - me; एव (eva) - only; यजते (yajate) - worships; इति (iti) - thus; अयम् (ayam) - this one; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; मूढात्मा (mūḍhātmā) - deluded soul; कालेन (kālena) - by time; उपनिपीडितः (upanipīḍitaḥ) - oppressed;]
(One whose nature is sacrifice, formerly having become, me only worships, thus this one said, worlds, deluded soul, by time, oppressed.)
This deluded soul, who was formerly devoted to sacrifice, said to the worlds, 'He worships only me,' being oppressed by time.
अपाकृता ततः शक्र त्वयि वत्स्यामि वासव। अप्रमत्तेन धार्यास्मि तपसा विक्रमेण च ॥१२-२१८-१५॥
apākṛtā tataḥ śakra tvayi vatsyāmi vāsava। apramattena dhāryāsmi tapasā vikrameṇa ca ॥12-218-15॥

(Removed then, O Śakra, in you I shall dwell, O Vāsava. By the vigilant, I am to be borne by austerity and by prowess.)
O Śakra, when the obstacles are removed, I shall dwell with you, O Vāsava. I am to be sustained by the vigilant through austerity and valor.

asti devamanuṣyeṣu sarvabhūteṣu vā pumān। yastvāmeko viṣahituṃ śaknuyāt kamalālaye ॥12-218-16॥
[अस्ति (asti) - there is; देव (deva) - god; मनुष्येषु (manuṣyeṣu) - among men; सर्वभूतेषु (sarvabhūteṣu) - among all beings; वा (vā) - or; पुमान् (pumān) - man; यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; विषहितुम् (viṣahitum) - to withstand; शक्नुयात् (śaknuyāt) - is able; कमलालये (kamalālaye) - O Kamalālayā (O abode of Lakṣmī, i.e., Viṣṇu);]
(There is (asti) a god (deva) among men (manuṣyeṣu), or (vā) a man (pumān) among all beings (sarvabhūteṣu), who (yaḥ), O Kamalālaye (O abode of Lakṣmī), alone (ekaḥ) is able (śaknuyāt) to withstand (viṣahitum) you (tvām).)
O Kamalālaye, is there any god among men, or any man among all beings, who alone is able to withstand you?

Neither god, nor gandharva, nor asura, nor even rākṣasa—there is no one, O Purandara, who alone is capable of overcoming me.

(I indeed will place you according to (my) power, according to (my) strength. But let there not be my transgression, indeed, always, O Lakṣmī, in your presence.)
O Lakṣmī, I will indeed place you as per my ability and strength, but let me never transgress in your presence.
भूमिरेव मनुष्येषु धारणी भूतभाविनी। सा ते पादं तितिक्षेत समर्था हीति मे मतिः ॥१२-२१८-२१॥
bhūmir eva manuṣyeṣu dhāraṇī bhūtabhāvinī। sā te pādaṃ titikṣeta samarthā hīti me matiḥ॥12-218-21॥

(Earth indeed among men (is) the supporter, producer of beings. She should endure your foot, (being) capable, indeed—thus (is) my opinion.)
The earth, truly the supporter and producer of beings among men, should be able to bear your foot—this is my opinion.

(Waters indeed among men are flowing attendants. Let them endure your foot; enough, let the waters endure.)
The waters, truly, are the flowing attendants among men. Let them bear your foot; let the waters be able to endure it.

(In which the gods and sacrifices, in which the Vedas are established, the third foot, Agni, your well-supported, will uphold.)
That third step of yours, Agni, in which the gods and sacrifices and the Vedas are established, will be well supported and upheld by you.

(Those who indeed are virtuous among men, devoted to Brahman, speakers of truth—they, they should sufficiently endure the step; the virtuous to endure.)
Those among men who are virtuous, devoted to Brahman, and speakers of truth—such persons should be able to endure every hardship; it is the nature of the virtuous to endure.

(This my placed foot, which is established among the good. Thus, O Śakra, envelop me, who is placed among beings.)
This is my foot, which I have set among the virtuous. In this way, O Śakra, surround me, who is established among beings.

bhūtānāmiha vai yastvā mayā vinihitāṃ satīm। upahanyātsa me dviṣyāttathā śṛṇvantu me vacaḥ ॥12-218-29॥
[भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; इह (iha) - here; वै (vai) - indeed; यः (yaḥ) - who; त्वा (tvā) - you; मया (mayā) - by me; विनिहिताम् (vinihitām) - appointed; सतीम् (satīm) - existing; उपहन्यात् (upahanyāt) - should harm; सः (saḥ) - he; मे (me) - my; द्विष्यात् (dviṣyāt) - should become an enemy; तथा (tathā) - thus; शृण्वन्तु (śṛṇvantu) - let them hear; मे (me) - my; वचः (vacaḥ) - speech;]
(Of beings here indeed who you by me appointed existing should harm, he should become my enemy; thus let them hear my speech.)
Whoever among beings here should harm you, who have been appointed by me and are existing, he should become my enemy; thus let all hear my words.

ततस्त्यक्तः श्रिया राजा दैत्यानां बलिरब्रवीत्। यावत्पुरस्तात्प्रतपेत्तावद्वै दक्षिणां दिशम् ॥१२-२१८-३०॥
tatas tyaktaḥ śriyā rājā daityānāṃ balir abravīt। yāvat purastāt pratapet tāvad vai dakṣiṇāṃ diśam ॥12-218-30॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; त्यक्तः (tyaktaḥ) - abandoned; श्रिया (śriyā) - by prosperity; राजा (rājā) - king; दैत्यानाम् (daityānām) - of the Daityas; बलिः (baliḥ) - Bali; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; पुरस्तात् (purastāt) - in the east; प्रतपेत् (pratapet) - shines; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; वै (vai) - indeed; दक्षिणाम् (dakṣiṇām) - southern; दिशम् (diśam) - direction;]
(Then, abandoned by prosperity, the king of the Daityas, Bali, said: "As long as it shines in the east, so long indeed (let us go to) the southern direction.")
Then, when prosperity had left him, King Bali of the Daityas said: "As long as it shines in the east, let us proceed to the southern direction."
पश्चिमां तावदेवापि तथोदीचीं दिवाकरः। तथा मध्यंदिने सूर्यो अस्तमेति यदा तदा ॥ पुनर्देवासुरं युद्धं भावि जेतास्मि वस्तदा ॥१२-२१८-३१॥
paścimāṃ tāvadevāpi tathodīcīṃ divākaraḥ। tathā madhyaṃdine sūryo astameti yadā tadā ॥ punardevāsuraṃ yuddhaṃ bhāvi jetāsmi vastadā ॥12-218-31॥
[पश्चिमां (paścimām) - western; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; एव (eva) - indeed; अपि (api) - also; तथा (tathā) - likewise; उदीचीं (udīcīm) - northern; दिवाकरः (divākaraḥ) - sun; तथा (tathā) - thus; मध्यंदिने (madhyaṃdine) - at midday; सूर्यः (sūryaḥ) - sun; अस्तमेति (astameti) - sets; यदा (yadā) - when; तदा (tadā) - then; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; देवासुरं (devāsuraṃ) - gods and demons; युद्धं (yuddhaṃ) - battle; भावि (bhāvi) - about to happen; जेतास्मि (jetāsmi) - I will be the conqueror; वः (vaḥ) - of you; तदा (tadā) - then;]
(The sun indeed remains in the west for so long, likewise in the north; thus at midday the sun sets when it is time. Again, when the battle of gods and demons is about to happen, then I will be the conqueror of you.)
Just as the sun stays in the west for a time and then in the north, and at midday sets when the time comes, so too, when the battle between gods and demons is about to occur, then I will be your conqueror.
सर्वाँल्लोकान्यदादित्य एकस्थस्तापयिष्यति। तदा देवासुरे युद्धे जेताहं त्वां शतक्रतो ॥१२-२१८-३२॥
sarvāṃllokānyadāditya ekasthastāpayiṣyati। tadā devāsure yuddhe jetāhaṃ tvāṃ śatakrato ॥12-218-32॥

(All the worlds, when the Sun in one place will heat, then in the battle of gods and asuras, I am the conqueror of you, O Śatakratu.)
When the Sun scorches all the worlds from one place, then, O Śatakratu, in the battle between gods and asuras, I will conquer you.

brahmaṇāsmi samādiṣṭo na hantavyo bhavāniti। tena te'haṃ bale vajraṃ na vimuñcāmi mūrdhani ॥12-218-33॥
[ब्रह्मणा (brahmaṇā) - by Brahmā; अस्मि (asmi) - I am; समादिष्टः (samādiṣṭaḥ) - well-instructed; न (na) - not; हन्तव्यः (hantavyaḥ) - to be killed; भवान् (bhavān) - you; इति (iti) - thus; तेन (tena) - therefore; ते (te) - to you; अहम् (aham) - I; बले (bale) - in battle; वज्रम् (vajram) - the thunderbolt; न (na) - not; विमुञ्चामि (vimuñcāmi) - I release; मूर्धनि (mūrdhani) - on (your) head;]
(By Brahmā I am well-instructed: 'You are not to be killed.' Therefore, to you, in battle, I do not release the thunderbolt on (your) head.)
I have been well-instructed by Brahmā that you are not to be killed. Therefore, I do not hurl the thunderbolt at your head in battle.
यथेष्टं गच्छ दैत्येन्द्र स्वस्ति तेऽस्तु महासुर। आदित्यो नावतपिता कदाचिन्मध्यतः स्थितः ॥१२-२१८-३४॥
yatheṣṭaṃ gaccha daityendra svasti te'stu mahāsura। ādityo nāvatapitā kadācinmadhyataḥ sthitaḥ ॥12-218-34॥

(As you wish, go, O lord of the Daityas; well-being to you, O great Asura. The Sun has never scorched from the middle.)

(Established indeed is the time of this (world) before, certainly by Svayambhū; unceasingly this (time) moves around, protecting creatures by truth.)
The time for this world was indeed established long ago by Svayambhū; this time moves unceasingly, protecting all creatures by the power of truth.
अयनं तस्य षण्मासा उत्तरं दक्षिणं तथा। येन संयाति लोकेषु शीतोष्णे विसृजन्रविः ॥१२-२१८-३६॥
ayanaṃ tasya ṣaṇmāsā uttaraṃ dakṣiṇaṃ tathā। yena saṃyāti lokeṣu śītoṣṇe visṛjan raviḥ ॥12-218-36॥
[अयनम् (ayanam) - course; movement; तस्य (tasya) - of him; of it; षण्मासाः (ṣaṇmāsāḥ) - six months; उत्तरम् (uttaram) - northern; दक्षिणम् (dakṣiṇam) - southern; तथा (tathā) - likewise; so; येन (yena) - by which; by whom; संयाति (saṃyāti) - moves; goes together; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in the worlds; शीतोष्णे (śītoṣṇe) - cold and heat; विसृजन् (visṛjan) - emitting; sending forth; रविः (raviḥ) - the Sun;]
(The course of him is six months, northern and southern likewise; by which the Sun, moving in the worlds, emits cold and heat.)
The Sun's path consists of six months each in the northern and southern directions; by this movement, the Sun brings about cold and heat in the worlds.
