magnasya vyasane kṛcchre kiṃ śreyaḥ puruṣasya hi। bandhunaśe mahīpāla rājyanaśe'pi vā punaḥ ॥12-220-1॥

O king, when a man is immersed in calamity and difficulty, what benefit can there be for him, whether he loses his relatives or even his kingdom again?
त्वं हि नः परमो वक्ता लोकेऽस्मिन्भरतर्षभ। एतद्भवन्तं पृच्छामि तन्मे वक्तुमिहार्हसि ॥१२-२२०-२॥
tvaṃ hi naḥ paramo vaktā loke'smin bharatarṣabha। etad bhavantaṃ pṛcchāmi tan me vaktum ihārhasi ॥12-220-2॥

O king, for one who is separated from sons, wives, pleasures, and wealth, and who is immersed in great calamity, fortitude is the most beneficial.
धैर्येण युक्तस्य सतः शरीरं न विशीर्यते। आरोग्याच्च शरीरस्य स पुनर्विन्दते श्रियम् ॥१२-२२०-४॥
dhairyeṇa yuktasya sataḥ śarīraṃ na viśīryate। ārogyācca śarīrasya sa punarvindate śriyam ॥12-220-4॥

The body of a virtuous person endowed with courage does not perish. Through bodily health, he regains prosperity.
यस्य राज्ञो नरास्तात सात्त्विकीं वृत्तिमास्थिताः। तस्य स्थैर्यं च धैर्यं च व्यवसायश्च कर्मसु ॥१२-२२०-५॥

tamairāvatamūrdhasthaṃ prekṣya devagaṇairvṛtam। surendramindraṃ daityendro na śuśoca na vivyathe ॥12-220-12॥

दैत्य न व्यथसे शौर्यादथ वा वृद्धसेवया। तपसा भावितत्वाद्वा सर्वथैतत्सुदुष्करम् ॥१२-२२०-१४॥
daitya na vyathase śauryād atha vā vṛddhasevayā| tapasā bhāvitatvād vā sarvathaitat suduṣkaram ॥12-220-14॥

श्रैष्ठ्यं प्राप्य स्वजातीनां भुक्त्वा भोगाननुत्तमान्। हृतस्वबलराज्यस्त्वं ब्रूहि कस्मान्न शोचसि ॥१२-२२०-१६॥

After attaining supremacy among your own people and enjoying the highest pleasures, now that your strength and kingdom have been taken away, tell me, why do you not grieve?
ईश्वरो हि पुरा भूत्वा पितृपैतामहे पदे। तत्त्वमद्य हृतं दृष्ट्वा सपत्नैः किं न शोचसि ॥१२-२२०-१७॥
īśvaro hi purā bhūtvā pitṛpaitāmahe pade। tattvam adya hṛtaṃ dṛṣṭvā sapatnaiḥ kiṃ na śocasi ॥12-220-17॥

Once you were indeed the lord, occupying the position of your father and grandfather; now, seeing that position taken away by rivals, why do you not grieve?
बद्धश्च वारुणैः पाशैर्वज्रेण च समाहतः। हृतदारो हृतधनो ब्रूहि कस्मान्न शोचसि ॥१२-२२०-१८॥
baddhaś ca vāruṇaiḥ pāśair vajreṇa ca samāhataḥ। hṛtadāro hṛtadhano brūhi kasmān na śocasi॥12-220-18॥

You are bound by Varuṇa's nooses and struck by the thunderbolt; your wife and wealth have been taken away—tell me, why do you not grieve?
भ्रष्टश्रीर्विभवभ्रष्टो यन्न शोचसि दुष्करम्। त्रैलोक्यराज्यनाशे हि कोऽन्यो जीवितुमुत्सहेत् ॥१२-२२०-१९॥

(One whose fortune is lost, whose wealth is lost—that you do not grieve is difficult. Indeed, in the destruction of the sovereignty of the three worlds, who else would be able to live?)
It is difficult not to grieve when one has lost both fortune and wealth. Truly, when the sovereignty of all three worlds is destroyed, who else could endure to live?
एतच्चान्यच्च परुषं ब्रुवन्तं परिभूय तम्। श्रुत्वा सुखमसम्भ्रान्तो बलिर्वैरोचनोऽब्रवीत् ॥१२-२२०-२०॥

अशक्तः पूर्वमासीस्त्वं कथञ्चिच्छक्ततां गतः। कस्त्वदन्य इमा वाचः सुक्रूरा वक्तुमर्हति ॥१२-२२०-२२॥

यस्तु शत्रोर्वशस्थस्य शक्तोऽपि कुरुते दयाम्। हस्तप्राप्तस्य वीरस्य तं चैव पुरुषं विदुः ॥१२-२२०-२३॥
yastu śatrorvaśasthasya śakto'pi kurute dayām। hastaprāptasya vīrasya taṃ caiva puruṣaṃ viduḥ ॥12-220-23॥

मा च ते भूत्स्वभावोऽयं मया दैवतपुङ्गव। ईश्वरः सर्वभूतानां विक्रमेण जितो बलात् ॥१२-२२०-२५॥

अहमासं यथाद्य त्वं भविता त्वं यथा वयम्। मावमंस्था मया कर्म दुष्कृतं कृतमित्युत ॥१२-२२०-२७॥
aham āsaṃ yathā adya tvaṃ bhavitā tvaṃ yathā vayam। mā avamaṃsthā mayā karma duṣkṛtaṃ kṛtam iti uta ॥12-220-27॥

(Indeed, a person attains happiness and sorrow in turn. In turn, O Śakra, you have attained the state of Indra, not by action.)
A person experiences both happiness and sorrow in succession. In the same way, O Śakra, you have attained the position of Indra not through your actions.
कालः काले नयति मां त्वां च कालो नयत्ययम्। तेनाहं त्वं यथा नाद्य त्वं चापि न यथा वयम् ॥१२-२२०-२९॥
kālaḥ kāle nayati māṃ tvāṃ ca kālo nayatyayam। tenāhaṃ tvaṃ yathā nādya tvaṃ cāpi na yathā vayam ॥12-220-29॥

na vidyā na tapo dānaṃ na mitrāṇi na bāndhavāḥ। śaknuvanti paritrātuṃ naraṃ kālena pīḍitam ॥12-220-31॥

Neither knowledge, nor austerity, nor charity, nor friends, nor relatives can save a man who is afflicted by fate.
नागामिनमनर्थं हि प्रतिघातशतैरपि। शक्नुवन्ति प्रतिव्योढुमृते बुद्धिबलान्नराः ॥१२-२२०-३२॥
nāgāminamanarthaṃ hi pratighātaśatairapi। śaknuvanti prativyoḍhumṛte buddhibalānnarāḥ ॥12-220-32॥

(Not the future misfortune indeed, even by hundreds of obstacles, are able to be withstood without the strength of intellect by men.)
Men cannot withstand future misfortune, even with hundreds of obstacles, unless they have the strength of intellect.
पर्यायैर्हन्यमानानां परित्राता न विद्यते। इदं तु दुःखं यच्छक्र कर्ताहमिति मन्यते ॥१२-२२०-३३॥
paryāyair hanyamānānāṃ paritrātā na vidyate। idaṃ tu duḥkhaṃ yac chakra kartāham iti manyate ॥12-220-33॥

(By turns, of those being killed, a protector does not exist. This, but, suffering, which, O Śakra, 'I am the doer'—thus, thinks.)
There is no protector for those who are being killed in turns. This suffering, O Śakra, is because one thinks, 'I am the doer.'
यदि कर्ता भवेत्कर्ता न क्रियेत कदाचन। यस्मात्तु क्रियते कर्ता तस्मात्कर्ताप्यनीश्वरः ॥१२-२२०-३४॥
yadi kartā bhavetkartā na kriyeta kadācana। yasmāttu kriyate kartā tasmātkartāpyanīśvaraḥ ॥12-220-34॥
[यदि (yadi) - if; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; भवेत् (bhavet) - were; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; न (na) - not; क्रियेत (kriyeta) - would be done; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time; यस्मात् (yasmāt) - because; तु (tu) - but; क्रियते (kriyate) - is done; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; तस्मात् (tasmāt) - therefore; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; अपि (api) - also; अनीश्वरः (anīśvaraḥ) - not independent;]
(If the doer were the doer, it would not be done at any time. But because the doer is done, therefore the doer also is not independent.)
If the agent were truly the agent, action would never occur. But since the agent is made to act, therefore the agent too is not independent.
कालेन त्वाहमजयं कालेनाहं जितस्त्वया। गन्ता गतिमतां कालः कालः कलयति प्रजाः ॥१२-२२०-३५॥
kālena tvāhamajayaṃ kālenāhaṃ jitastvayā। gantā gatimatāṃ kālaḥ kālaḥ kalayati prajāḥ ॥12-220-35॥

(O Indra, babbling with natural intellect, you perceive. Some think you have attained much superiority by your own action.)
O Indra, speaking with a natural intellect, you think you understand; some consider you to have attained great superiority by your own actions.
कथमस्मद्विधो नाम जानँल्लोकप्रवृत्तयः। कालेनाभ्याहतः शोचेन्मुह्येद्वाप्यर्थसम्भ्रमे ॥१२-२२०-३७॥
katham asmad-vidho nāma jānan loka-pravṛttayaḥ। kālena abhyāhataḥ śocet muhyet vā api artha-sambhrame ॥12-220-37॥
[कथम् (katham) - how; अस्मद्विधः (asmad-vidhaḥ) - one like me; नाम (nāma) - indeed; जानन् (jānan) - knowing; लोकप्रवृत्तयः (loka-pravṛttayaḥ) - the ways of the world; कालेन (kālena) - by time; अभ्याहतः (abhyāhataḥ) - afflicted; शोचेत् (śocet) - should grieve; मुह्येत् (muhyet) - should be deluded; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; अर्थसम्भ्रमे (artha-sambhrame) - in confusion regarding purpose;]
(How should one like me, indeed, knowing the ways of the world, afflicted by time, grieve or even be deluded in confusion regarding purpose?)
How could someone like me, who knows the ways of the world, truly grieve or become confused about purpose, even when afflicted by time?
नित्यं कालपरीतस्य मम वा मद्विधस्य वा। बुद्धिर्व्यसनमासाद्य भिन्ना नौरिव सीदति ॥१२-२२०-३८॥
nityaṃ kālaparītasya mama vā madvidhasya vā। buddhirvyasanamāsādya bhinnā nauriva sīdati ॥12-220-38॥
[नित्यं (nityaṃ) - always; कालपरीतस्य (kālaparītasya) - of one afflicted by time; मम (mama) - my; वा (vā) - or; मद्विधस्य (madvidhasya) - of one like me; वा (vā) - or; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - misfortune; आसाद्य (āsādya) - having encountered; भिन्ना (bhinnā) - broken; नौः (nauḥ) - boat; इव (iva) - like; सीदति (sīdati) - sinks;]
(Always, for one afflicted by time, for me or for one like me, the intellect, having encountered misfortune, like a broken boat, sinks.)
For one afflicted by time, whether it is me or someone like me, the intellect, when struck by misfortune, sinks like a broken boat.
अहं च त्वं च ये चान्ये भविष्यन्ति सुराधिपाः। ते सर्वे शक्र यास्यन्ति मार्गमिन्द्रशतैर्गतम् ॥१२-२२०-३९॥
ahaṃ ca tvaṃ ca ye ca anye bhaviṣyanti surādhipāḥ। te sarve śakra yāsyanti mārgam indraśatair gatam ॥12-220-39॥
[अहं (ahaṃ) - I; च (ca) - and; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; ये (ye) - who; च (ca) - and; अन्ये (anye) - others; भविष्यन्ति (bhaviṣyanti) - will become; सुराधिपाः (surādhipāḥ) - lords of the gods; ते (te) - they; सर्वे (sarve) - all; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; यास्यन्ति (yāsyanti) - will go; मार्गम् (mārgam) - path; इन्द्रशतैः (indraśataiḥ) - by hundreds of Indras; गतम् (gatam) - gone;]
(I and you and those others who will become lords of the gods, all of them, O Śakra, will go the path gone by hundreds of Indras.)
O Śakra, I, you, and all the other future lords of the gods will all follow the path that hundreds of Indras have already taken.
त्वामप्येवं सुदुर्धर्षं ज्वलन्तं परया श्रिया। काले परिणते कालः कालयिष्यति मामिव ॥१२-२२०-४०॥
tvām apy evaṃ sudurdharṣaṃ jvalantaṃ parayā śriyā। kāle pariṇate kālaḥ kālayiṣyati mām iva॥12-220-40॥
[त्वाम् (tvām) - you; (accusative singular) अपि (api) - also; एवम् (evam) - thus; सुदुर्धर्षम् (sudurdharṣam) - very difficult to assail; ज्वलन्तम् (jvalantam) - blazing; परया (parayā) - with supreme; श्रिया (śriyā) - splendor; काले (kāle) - when time; परिणते (pariṇate) - has matured; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; कालयिष्यति (kālayiṣyati) - will bring to end; माम् (mām) - me; इव (iva) - just as;]
(You also, thus very difficult to assail, blazing with supreme splendor, when time has matured, time will bring to end just as me.)
Even you, who are so difficult to overcome and blazing with supreme splendor, when the time is ripe, time will bring to an end, just as it did to me.
बहूनीन्द्रसहस्राणि दैतेयानां युगे युगे। अभ्यतीतानि कालेन कालो हि दुरतिक्रमः ॥१२-२२०-४१॥
bahūnīndrasahasrāṇi daiteyānāṃ yuge yuge। abhyatītāni kālena kālo hi duratikramaḥ ॥12-220-41॥
[बहूनि (bahūni) - many; इन्द्रसहस्राणि (indrasahasrāṇi) - Indras by the thousands; दैतेयानाम् (daiteyānām) - of the Daiteyas (demons); युगे युगे (yuge yuge) - in every age; अभ्यतीतानि (abhyatītāni) - have passed away; कालेन (kālena) - by time; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; हि (hi) - indeed; दुरतिक्रमः (duratikramaḥ) - difficult to overcome;]
(Many thousands of Indras of the Daiteyas have passed away in every age by time; for time indeed is difficult to overcome.)

सर्वे दाक्षायणीपुत्राः प्राजापत्या महाबलाः। ज्वलन्तः प्रतपन्तश्च कालेन प्रतिसंहृताः ॥१२-२२०-६२॥
sarve dākṣāyaṇīputrāḥ prājāpatyā mahābalāḥ। jvalantaḥ pratapantaś ca kālena pratisaṃhṛtāḥ ॥12-220-62॥
[सर्वे (sarve) - all; दाक्षायणीपुत्राः (dākṣāyaṇīputrāḥ) - sons of Dākṣāyaṇī; प्राजापत्या (prājāpatyā) - descendants of Prajāpati; महाबलाः (mahābalāḥ) - of great strength; ज्वलन्तः (jvalantaḥ) - blazing; प्रतपन्तः (pratapantaḥ) - burning; च (ca) - and; कालेन (kālena) - by time; प्रतिसंहृताः (pratisaṃhṛtāḥ) - withdrawn;]
(All the sons of Dākṣāyaṇī, descendants of Prajāpati, of great strength, blazing, burning, and by time withdrawn.)
All the mighty sons of Dākṣāyaṇī, descendants of Prajāpati, who were blazing and burning, were ultimately withdrawn by time.
त्वं चैवेमां यदा भुक्त्वा पृथिवीं त्यक्ष्यसे पुनः। न शक्ष्यसि तदा शक्र नियन्तुं शोकमात्मनः ॥१२-२२०-६३॥
tvaṃ caivemāṃ yadā bhuktvā pṛthivīṃ tyakṣyase punaḥ। na śakṣyasi tadā śakra niyantuṃ śokamātmanaḥ ॥12-220-63॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; इमां (imām) - this; यदा (yadā) - when; भुक्त्वा (bhuktvā) - having enjoyed; पृथिवीं (pṛthivīṃ) - the earth; त्यक्ष्यसे (tyakṣyase) - you will abandon; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; न (na) - not; शक्ष्यसि (śakṣyasi) - you will be able; तदा (tadā) - then; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; नियन्तुम् (niyantum) - to restrain; शोकम् (śokam) - sorrow; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of yourself;]
(You and indeed this, when having enjoyed the earth, you will abandon again; not will you then, O Śakra, be able to restrain the sorrow of yourself.)
O Śakra, when you have enjoyed this earth and must abandon it again, then you will not be able to restrain your own sorrow.
मुञ्चेच्छां कामभोगेषु मुञ्चेमं श्रीभवं मदम्। एवं स्वराज्यनाशे त्वं शोकं सम्प्रसहिष्यसि ॥१२-२२०-६४॥
muñcechchhāṃ kāmabhogeṣu muñcemaṃ śrībhavaṃ madam। evaṃ svarājyanāśe tvaṃ śokaṃ samprasahiṣyasi ॥12-220-64॥
[मुञ्च (muñca) - abandon; let go; इच्छाम् (icchām) - desire; wish; कामभोगेषु (kāmabhogeṣu) - in sensual enjoyments; मुञ्च (muñca) - abandon; let go; इमम् (imam) - this; श्रीभवम् (śrībhavam) - prosperity-born; मदम् (madam) - pride; arrogance; एवं (evaṃ) - thus; in this way; स्वराज्यनाशे (svarājyanāśe) - in the loss of own kingdom; त्वम् (tvam) - you; शोकम् (śokam) - sorrow; सम्प्रसहिष्यसि (samprasahiṣyasi) - you will endure; you will bear;]
(Abandon desire for sensual enjoyments, abandon this prosperity-born pride. Thus, in the loss of your own kingdom, you will endure sorrow.)
Give up desire for sensual pleasures and this pride born of prosperity. In this way, when you lose your own kingdom, you will be able to bear the sorrow.
शोककाले शुचो मा त्वं हर्षकाले च मा हृषः। अतीतानागते हित्वा प्रत्युत्पन्नेन वर्तय ॥१२-२२०-६५॥
śokakāle śuco mā tvaṃ harṣakāle ca mā hṛṣaḥ। atītānāgate hitvā pratyutpannena vartaya ॥12-220-65॥
[शोककाले (śokakāle) - in the time of sorrow; शुचः (śucaḥ) - grieve; मा (mā) - do not; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; हर्षकाले (harṣakāle) - in the time of joy; च (ca) - and; मा (mā) - do not; हृषः (hṛṣaḥ) - rejoice; अतीतानागते (atītānāgate) - past and future; हित्वा (hitvā) - having abandoned; प्रत्युत्पन्नेन (pratyutpannena) - with the present; वर्तय (vartaya) - conduct yourself;]
(In the time of sorrow, do not grieve, you; in the time of joy, also do not rejoice. Having abandoned the past and future, conduct yourself with the present.)
Do not grieve in times of sorrow, nor exult in times of joy. Let go of the past and the future, and live in the present.
मां चेदभ्यागतः कालः सदायुक्तमतन्द्रितम्। क्षमस्व नचिरादिन्द्र त्वामप्युपगमिष्यति ॥१२-२२०-६६॥
māṃ ced abhyāgataḥ kālaḥ sadāyuktam atandritam। kṣamasva nacirād indra tvām api upagamiṣyati ॥12-220-66॥
[माम् (mām) - me; चेत् (cet) - if; अभ्यागतः (abhyāgataḥ) - has come; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; सदा (sadā) - always; युक्तम् (yuktam) - engaged; अतन्द्रितम् (atandritam) - untiring; क्षमस्व (kṣamasva) - forgive; न (na) - not; चिरात् (cirāt) - after a long time; इन्द्र (indra) - O Indra; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अपि (api) - also; उपगमिष्यति (upagamiṣyati) - will approach;]
(If time, always engaged and untiring, has come to me, forgive, O Indra; not after a long time, it will approach you also.)
If the destined time, ever engaged and untiring, has come to me, forgive me, O Indra; before long, it will come to you as well.
त्रासयन्निव देवेन्द्र वाग्भिस्तक्षसि मामिह। संयते मयि नूनं त्वमात्मानं बहु मन्यसे ॥१२-२२०-६७॥
trāsayanniva devendra vāgbhistakṣasi mām iha। saṃyate mayi nūnaṃ tvam ātmānaṃ bahu manyase॥12-220-67॥
[त्रासयन् (trāsayan) - causing fear; इव (iva) - as if; देवेंद्र (devendra) - O Indra of the gods; वाग्भिः (vāgbhiḥ) - with words; तक्षसि (takṣasi) - you are tormenting; माम् (mām) - me; इह (iha) - here; संयते (saṃyate) - in the restrained; मयि (mayi) - in me; नूनम् (nūnam) - indeed; त्वम् (tvam) - you; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - yourself; बहु (bahu) - much; मन्यसे (manyase) - you consider;]
(As if causing fear, O Indra of the gods, with words you are tormenting me here; in the restrained me, indeed, you consider yourself much.)
O Indra of the gods, you seem to be tormenting me here with words as if to frighten me; since I am self-restrained, you surely think highly of yourself.
कालः प्रथममायान्मां पश्चात्त्वामनुधावति। तेन गर्जसि देवेन्द्र पूर्वं कालहते मयि ॥१२-२२०-६८॥
kālaḥ prathamam āyān māṃ paścāt tvām anudhāvati। tena garjasi devendra pūrvaṃ kāla-hate mayi ॥12-220-68॥
[कालः (kālaḥ) - time; प्रथमम् (prathamam) - first; आयान् (āyān) - having come; माम् (mām) - me; पश्चात् (paścāt) - after; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; अनुधावति (anudhāvati) - pursues; तेन (tena) - by him; गर्जसि (garjasi) - you roar; देवेन्द्र (devendra) - O Indra of the gods; पूर्वम् (pūrvam) - before; कालहते (kāla-hate) - struck down by time; मयि (mayi) - when I;]
(Time first came to me, after (that) pursues you. By him you roar, O Indra of the gods, before (when) I was struck down by time.)
Time first approached me, and then pursues you. Because of that, O Indra of the gods, you boast now, but earlier, when I was struck down by time.
को हि स्थातुमलं लोके क्रुद्धस्य मम संयुगे। कालस्तु बलवान्प्राप्तस्तेन तिष्ठसि वासव ॥१२-२२०-६९॥
ko hi sthātum alaṃ loke kruddhasya mama saṃyuge। kālas tu balavān prāptas tena tiṣṭhasi vāsava ॥12-220-69॥
[कः (kaḥ) - who; हि (hi) - indeed; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to stand; अलम् (alam) - capable; लोके (loke) - in the world; क्रुद्धस्य (kruddhasya) - of the enraged; मम (mama) - my; संयुगे (saṃyuge) - in battle; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; तु (tu) - but; बलवान् (balavān) - powerful; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - has arrived; तेन (tena) - therefore; तिष्ठसि (tiṣṭhasi) - you stand; वासव (vāsava) - O Vāsava (Indra);]
(Who indeed is capable to stand in the world against my enraged self in battle? But time, being powerful, has arrived; therefore, you stand, O Vāsava.)
Who in this world can stand against me when I am enraged in battle? Yet, O Vāsava, it is because the powerful force of time has arrived that you are able to stand.
यत्तद्वर्षसहस्रान्तं पूर्णं भवितुमर्हति। यथा मे सर्वगात्राणि नस्वस्थानि हतौजसः ॥१२-२२०-७०॥
yattad-varṣa-sahasrāntaṃ pūrṇaṃ bhavitum arhati। yathā me sarva-gātrāṇi na sva-sthāni hata-ojasaḥ ॥12-220-70॥
[यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; वर्षसहस्रान्तम् (varṣa-sahasrāntam) - at the end of a thousand years; पूर्णम् (pūrṇam) - complete; भवितुम् (bhavitum) - to become; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; यथा (yathā) - just as; मे (me) - my; सर्वगात्राणि (sarva-gātrāṇi) - all limbs; न (na) - not; स्वस्थानि (sva-sthāni) - in their own place; हतौजसः (hata-ojasaḥ) - with strength destroyed;]
(Which, that, at the end of a thousand years, complete, to become, deserves; just as my all limbs not in their own place, with strength destroyed.)
That which deserves to be completed at the end of a thousand years, just as all my limbs, with their strength destroyed, are not in their own place.
अहमैन्द्रच्च्युतः स्थानात्त्वमिन्द्रः प्रकृतो दिवि। सुचित्रे जीवलोकेऽस्मिन्नुपास्यः कालपर्ययात् ॥१२-२२०-७१॥
aham aindraś cyutaḥ sthānāt tvam indraḥ prakṛto divi। sucitre jīvaloke'smin upāsyaḥ kālaparyayāt ॥12-220-71॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; ऐन्द्रात् (aindrāt) - from Indra's (position); च्युतः (cyutaḥ) - fallen; स्थानात् (sthānāt) - from position; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; प्रकृतः (prakṛtaḥ) - appointed; दिवि (divi) - in heaven; सुचित्रे (sucitre) - well-adorned; जीवलोके (jīvaloke) - in the world of living beings; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; उपास्यः (upāsyaḥ) - to be worshipped; कालपर्ययात् (kālaparyayāt) - by the change of time;]
(I, fallen from Indra's position, you, Indra, appointed in heaven; in this well-adorned world of living beings, to be worshipped by the change of time.)
I have fallen from the position of Indra, and you have been appointed as Indra in heaven; in this beautiful world of living beings, you are to be worshipped as time changes.
किं हि कृत्वा त्वमिन्द्रोऽद्य किं हि कृत्वा च्युता वयम्। कालः कर्ता विकर्ता च सर्वमन्यदकारणम् ॥१२-२२०-७२॥
kiṁ hi kṛtvā tvam indro 'dya kiṁ hi kṛtvā cyutā vayam। kālaḥ kartā vikartā ca sarvam anyad akāraṇam ॥12-220-72॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; हि (hi) - indeed; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; त्वम् (tvam) - you; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; अद्य (adya) - today; किं (kiṁ) - what; हि (hi) - indeed; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; च्युता (cyutā) - fallen; वयम् (vayam) - we; कालः (kālaḥ) - Time; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; विकर्ता (vikartā) - transformer; च (ca) - and; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; अकारणम् (akāraṇam) - without cause;]
(What indeed having done, you, Indra, today? What indeed having done, fallen we? Time is the doer and transformer and all else is without cause.)
What have you done today, Indra? What have we done to fall? Time is the doer and transformer; everything else is without cause.
नाशं विनाशमैश्वर्यं सुखदुःखे भवाभवौ। विद्वान्प्राप्यैवमत्यर्थं न प्रहृष्येन्न च व्यथेत् ॥१२-२२०-७३॥
nāśaṃ vināśam-aiśvaryaṃ sukha-duḥkhe bhava-abhavau। vidvān prāpya evaṃ atyarthaṃ na prahṛṣyet na ca vyathet॥12-220-73॥
[नाशम् (nāśam) - destruction; विनाशम् (vināśam) - annihilation; ऐश्वर्यम् (aiśvaryam) - prosperity; सुखदुःखे (sukha-duḥkhe) - pleasure and pain; भवाभवौ (bhava-abhavau) - existence and non-existence; विद्वान् (vidvān) - the wise person; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; एवम् (evam) - thus; अत्यर्थम् (atyartham) - excessively; न (na) - not; प्रहृष्येत् (prahṛṣyet) - should rejoice; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; व्यथेत् (vyathet) - should be distressed;]
(Destruction, annihilation, prosperity, pleasure and pain, existence and non-existence—having obtained these thus, the wise person should not excessively rejoice nor be distressed.)
A wise person, upon encountering destruction, annihilation, prosperity, pleasure and pain, or existence and non-existence, should neither be excessively elated nor distressed.
त्वमेव हीन्द्र वेत्थास्मान्वेदाहं त्वां च वासव। विकत्थसे मां किं बद्धं कालेन निरपत्रप ॥१२-२२०-७४॥
tvam-eva hīndra vetthāsmān vedāhaṃ tvāṃ ca vāsava। vikatthase māṃ kiṃ baddhaṃ kālena nirapatrapa ॥12-220-74॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - surely; इन्द्र (indra) - Indra; वेत्थ (vettha) - know; अस्मान् (asmān) - us; वेद (veda) - know; अहम् (aham) - I; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; च (ca) - and; वासव (vāsava) - Vāsava (another name for Indra); विकत्थसे (vikatthase) - you boast; माम् (mām) - me; किम् (kim) - why; बद्धम् (baddham) - bound; कालेन (kālena) - by time; निरपत्रप (nirapatrapa) - shameless one;]
(You indeed, O Indra, surely know us; I know you also, O Vāsava. You boast to me—why, shameless one, (when I am) bound by time?)
You, Indra, truly know us; I also know you, O Vāsava. Why do you boast to me, shameless one, when I am bound by time?
त्वमेव हि पुरा वेत्थ यत्तदा पौरुषं मम। समरेषु च विक्रान्तं पर्याप्तं तन्निदर्शनम् ॥१२-२२०-७५॥
tvam eva hi purā vettha yat tadā pauruṣaṃ mama। samareṣu ca vikrāntaṃ paryāptaṃ tan-nidarśanam ॥12-220-75॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; हि (hi) - for; पुरा (purā) - formerly; वेत्थ (vettha) - you know; यत् (yat) - that which; तदा (tadā) - at that time; पौरुषम् (pauruṣam) - manliness; मम (mama) - my; समरेषु (samareṣu) - in battles; च (ca) - and; विक्रान्तम् (vikrāntam) - valiant; पर्याप्तम् (paryāptam) - sufficient; तत् (tat) - that; निदर्शनम् (nidarśanam) - proof;]
(You indeed formerly know that which at that time (was) my manliness; and in battles, (my) valiant (deeds are) sufficient proof of that.)
You yourself know well my former manliness; my valor in battles is sufficient proof of that.
आदित्याश्चैव रुद्राश्च साध्याश्च वसुभिः सह। मया विनिर्जिताः सर्वे मरुतश्च शचीपते ॥१२-२२०-७६॥
ādityāś caiva rudrāś ca sādhyāś ca vasubhiḥ saha। mayā vinirjitāḥ sarve marutaś ca śacīpate ॥12-220-76॥
[आदित्याः (ādityāḥ) - the Ādityas; (solar deities) च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; रुद्राः (rudrāḥ) - the Rudras; (storm deities) च (ca) - and; साध्याः (sādhyāḥ) - the Sādhyas; (a class of deities) च (ca) - and; वसुभिः (vasubhiḥ) - with the Vasus; (elemental deities) सह (saha) - together with; मया (mayā) - by me; विनिर्जिताः (vinirjitāḥ) - completely conquered; सर्वे (sarve) - all; मरुतः (marutaḥ) - the Maruts; (wind deities) च (ca) - and; शचीपते (śacīpate) - O lord of Śacī; (epithet of Indra);]
(The Ādityas and indeed the Rudras and the Sādhyas and together with the Vasus, all have been completely conquered by me, and the Maruts, O lord of Śacī.)
O lord of Śacī, all the Ādityas, Rudras, Sādhyas, Vasus, and Maruts have been completely conquered by me.
त्वमेव शक्र जानासि देवासुरसमागमे। समेता विबुधा भग्नास्तरसा समरे मया ॥१२-२२०-७७॥
tvam-eva śakra jānāsi devāsurasamāgame। sametā vibudhā bhagnās-tarasā samare mayā ॥12-220-77॥
[त्वम् (tvam) - you; एव (eva) - indeed; शक्र (śakra) - Śakra (Indra, O Indra); जानासि (jānāsi) - know; देव (deva) - gods; असुर (asura) - asuras (demons); समागमे (samāgame) - in the coming together (battle); समेता (sametā) - assembled; विबुधा (vibudhā) - the wise (gods); भग्नाः (bhagnāḥ) - broken, defeated; तरसा (tarasā) - by force; समरे (samare) - in battle; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(You indeed, O Śakra, know (that) in the coming together of gods and asuras, the assembled gods were defeated by force in battle by me.)
You alone, O Indra, know that in the battle between gods and asuras, the assembled gods were forcefully defeated by me in the fight.
पर्वताश्चासकृत्क्षिप्ताः सवनाः सवनौकसः। सटङ्कशिखरा घोराः समरे मूर्ध्नि ते मया ॥१२-२२०-७८॥
parvatāś cāsakṛt kṣiptāḥ savanāḥ savanaukasaḥ. saṭaṅkaśikharā ghorāḥ samare mūrdhni te mayā ॥12-220-78॥
[पर्वताः (parvatāḥ) - mountains; च (ca) - and; असकृत् (asakṛt) - repeatedly; क्षिप्ताः (kṣiptāḥ) - hurled; सवनाः (savanāḥ) - with peaks; सवनौकसः (savanaukasaḥ) - inhabitants of the peaks; सटङ्कशिखराः (saṭaṅkaśikharāḥ) - with jagged summits; घोराः (ghorāḥ) - terrible; समरे (samare) - in battle; मूर्ध्नि (mūrdhni) - on the head; ते (te) - your; मया (mayā) - by me;]
(Mountains and repeatedly hurled, with peaks, inhabitants of the peaks, with jagged summits, terrible, in battle, on your head, by me.)
Mountains with jagged and terrible summits, along with their inhabitants, were repeatedly hurled by me in battle upon your head.
किं नु शक्यं मया कर्तुं यत्कालो दुरतिक्रमः। न हि त्वां नोत्सहे हन्तुं सवज्रमपि मुष्टिना ॥१२-२२०-७९॥
kiṁ nu śakyaṁ mayā kartuṁ yat kālo duratikramaḥ। na hi tvāṁ notsahe hantuṁ savajram api muṣṭinā॥12-220-79॥
[किं (kiṁ) - what; नु (nu) - indeed; शक्यं (śakyaṁ) - possible; मया (mayā) - by me; कर्तुं (kartuṁ) - to do; यत् (yat) - which; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; दुरतिक्रमः (duratikramaḥ) - hard to transgress; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; त्वाम् (tvām) - you; न (na) - not; उत्सहे (utsahe) - am able; हन्तुं (hantuṁ) - to kill; सवज्रम् (savajram) - with thunderbolt; अपि (api) - even; मुष्टिना (muṣṭinā) - with fist;]
(What indeed is possible for me to do, since time is hard to transgress? Indeed, I am not able to kill you even with a thunderbolt, with my fist.)
What can I possibly do, since time cannot be overcome? Truly, I am not able to kill you, even with a thunderbolt or with my fist.
न तु विक्रमकालोऽयं क्षमाकालोऽयमागतः। तेन त्वा मर्षये शक्र दुर्मर्षणतरस्त्वया ॥१२-२२०-८०॥
na tu vikramakālo'yaṃ kṣamākālo'yamāgataḥ। tena tvā marṣaye śakra durmarṣaṇatarastvayā ॥12-220-80॥
[न (na) - not; तु (tu) - but; विक्रमकालः (vikramakālaḥ) - time of valor; अयम् (ayam) - this; क्षमा (kṣamā) - forbearance; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; अयम् (ayam) - this; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has come; तेन (tena) - by that; त्वा (tvā) - you; मर्षये (marṣaye) - I forgive; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; दुर्मर्षणतरः (durmarṣaṇataraḥ) - more difficult to forgive; त्वया (tvayā) - by you;]
(Not but time of valor this, forbearance time this has come. By that, you I forgive, O Śakra, more difficult to forgive by you.)
But this is not the time for valor; this is the time for forbearance. Therefore, I forgive you, O Śakra, though you are even more difficult to forgive.
त्वं मा परिणते काले परीतं कालवह्निना। नियतं कालपाशेन बद्धं शक्र विकत्थसे ॥१२-२२०-८१॥
tvaṃ mā pariṇate kāle parītaṃ kālavahninā। niyataṃ kālapāśena baddhaṃ śakra vikatthase ॥12-220-81॥
[त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; मा (mā) - not; परिणते (pariṇate) - having elapsed; काले (kāle) - in time; परीतम् (parītam) - overcome; कालवह्निना (kālavahninā) - by the fire of time; नियतं (niyataṃ) - certainly; कालपाशेन (kālapāśena) - by the noose of time; बद्धम् (baddham) - bound; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; विकत्थसे (vikatthase) - you boast;]
(You, not when time has elapsed, overcome by the fire of time, certainly by the noose of time bound, O Śakra, you boast.)
O Śakra, you boast even though, when time has passed, you are overcome and bound by the fire and noose of time.
अयं स पुरुषः श्यामो लोकस्य दुरतिक्रमः। बद्ध्वा तिष्ठति मां रौद्रः पशुं रशनया यथा ॥१२-२२०-८२॥
ayaṃ sa puruṣaḥ śyāmo lokasya duratikramaḥ। baddhvā tiṣṭhati māṃ raudraḥ paśuṃ raśanayā yathā ॥12-220-82॥
[अयं (ayaṃ) - this; स (sa) - he; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; श्यामः (śyāmaḥ) - dark; लोकस्य (lokasya) - of the world; दुरतिक्रमः (duratikramaḥ) - hard to overcome; बद्ध्वा (baddhvā) - having bound; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - stands; माम् (mām) - me; रौद्रः (raudraḥ) - fierce; पशुम् (paśum) - beast; रशनया (raśanayā) - with a rope; यथा (yathā) - as;]
(This he man dark of the world hard to overcome. Having bound stands me fierce beast with a rope as.)
This dark man, who is hard to overcome in the world, stands having bound me, fierce, like a beast with a rope.
लाभालाभौ सुखं दुःखं कामक्रोधौ भवाभवौ। वधो बन्धः प्रमोक्षश्च सर्वं कालेन लभ्यते ॥१२-२२०-८३॥
lābhālābhau sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ kāmakrodhau bhavābhavau। vadho bandhaḥ pramokṣaś ca sarvaṃ kālena labhyate॥12-220-83॥
[लाभ (lābha) - gain; अलाभौ (alābhau) - loss; सुखं (sukham) - happiness; दुःखं (duḥkham) - sorrow; काम (kāma) - desire; क्रोधौ (krodhau) - anger; भव (bhava) - existence; अभवौ (abhavau) - non-existence; वधः (vadhaḥ) - death; बन्धः (bandhaḥ) - bondage; प्रमोक्षः (pramokṣaḥ) - liberation; च (ca) - and; सर्वं (sarvaṃ) - all; कालेन (kālena) - by time; लभ्यते (labhyate) - is obtained;]
(Gain, loss, happiness, sorrow, desire, anger, existence, non-existence, death, bondage, and liberation—all are obtained by time.)
Gain and loss, happiness and sorrow, desire and anger, existence and non-existence, death, bondage, and liberation—everything is attained in time.
नाहं कर्ता न कर्ता त्वं कर्ता यस्तु सदा प्रभुः। सोऽयं पचति कालो मां वृक्षे फलमिवागतम् ॥१२-२२०-८४॥
nāhaṃ kartā na kartā tvaṃ kartā yastu sadā prabhuḥ। so'yaṃ pacati kālo māṃ vṛkṣe phalam ivāgatam ॥12-220-84॥
[न (na) - not; अहम् (aham) - I; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; न (na) - not; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; त्वम् (tvam) - you; कर्ता (kartā) - doer; यः (yaḥ) - who; तु (tu) - indeed; सदा (sadā) - always; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - master; सः (saḥ) - he; अयम् (ayam) - this; पचति (pacati) - ripens; कालः (kālaḥ) - Time; माम् (mām) - me; वृक्षे (vṛkṣe) - on the tree; फलम् (phalam) - fruit; इव (iva) - like; आगतम् (āgatam) - arrived;]
(Not I (am) the doer, not (are) you the doer; the doer is indeed always the master. He, this Time, ripens me like a fruit arrived on the tree.)
I am not the doer, nor are you; the true doer is always the supreme master. It is Time that ripens me, just as a fruit ripens on the tree when its time has come.
यान्येव पुरुषः कुर्वन्सुखैः कालेन युज्यते। पुनस्तान्येव कुर्वाणो दुःखैः कालेन युज्यते ॥१२-२२०-८५॥
yānyeva puruṣaḥ kurvansukhaiḥ kālena yujyate। punastānyeva kurvāṇo duḥkhaiḥ kālena yujyate ॥12-220-85॥
[यानि (yāni) - which; (things) एव (eva) - indeed; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - man; कुर्वन् (kurvan) - doing; सुखैः (sukhaiḥ) - with pleasures; कालेन (kālena) - by time; युज्यते (yujyate) - is joined; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; तानि (tāni) - those; एव (eva) - indeed; कुर्वाणः (kurvāṇaḥ) - doing; दुःखैः (duḥkhaiḥ) - with pains; कालेन (kālena) - by time; युज्यते (yujyate) - is joined;]
(Which indeed (things) a man doing with pleasures by time is joined. Again those indeed doing with pains by time is joined.)
Whatever actions a man performs with pleasure, in time he is united with them; again, performing those same actions, he is united with pain in time.
न च कालेन कालज्ञः स्पृष्टः शोचितुमर्हति। तेन शक्र न शोचामि नास्ति शोके सहायता ॥१२-२२०-८६॥
na ca kālena kālajñaḥ spṛṣṭaḥ śocitum arhati। tena śakra na śocāmi nāsti śoke sahāyatā ॥12-220-86॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; कालेन (kālena) - by time; कालज्ञः (kālajñaḥ) - knower of time; स्पृष्टः (spṛṣṭaḥ) - touched; शोचितुम् (śocitum) - to grieve; अर्हति (arhati) - deserves; तेन (tena) - by that; शक्र (śakra) - O Śakra; न (na) - not; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; नास्ति (nāsti) - there is not; शोके (śoke) - in grief; सहायता (sahāyatā) - help;]
(And the knower of time touched by time does not deserve to grieve. By that, O Śakra, I do not grieve; there is no help in grief.)
The one who understands time, when affected by time, should not grieve. Therefore, O Śakra, I do not grieve, for there is no assistance in grief.
यदा हि शोचतां शोको व्यसनं नापकर्षति। सामर्थ्यं शोचतो नास्ति नाद्य शोचाम्यहं ततः ॥१२-२२०-८७॥
yadā hi śocatāṃ śoko vyasanaṃ nāpakarṣati। sāmarthyaṃ śocato nāsti nādya śocāmyahaṃ tataḥ ॥12-220-87॥
[यदा (yadā) - when; हि (hi) - indeed; शोचतां (śocatām) - of those who grieve; शोकः (śokaḥ) - grief; व्यसनं (vyasanam) - calamity; न (na) - not; अपकर्षति (apakarṣati) - removes; सामर्थ्यं (sāmarthyam) - strength; शोचतः (śocataḥ) - of the one who grieves; नास्ति (nāsti) - does not exist; न (na) - not; अद्य (adya) - today; शोचामि (śocāmi) - I grieve; अहं (ahaṃ) - I; ततः (tataḥ) - therefore;]
(When indeed for those who grieve, grief does not remove calamity, strength does not exist for the one who grieves; therefore, today I do not grieve.)
When grief does not remove calamity for those who grieve, and strength does not exist for the grieving, therefore, today I do not grieve.
एवमुक्तः सहस्राक्षो भगवान्पाकशासनः। प्रतिसंहृत्य संरम्भमित्युवाच शतक्रतुः ॥१२-२२०-८८॥
evam-uktaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ bhagavān pākāśāsanaḥ। prati-saṃhṛtya saṃrambham ity-uvāca śatakratuḥ ॥12-220-88॥
[एवम् (evam) - thus; उक्तः (uktaḥ) - having been addressed; सहस्राक्षः (sahasrākṣaḥ) - thousand-eyed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; पाकशासनः (pākāśāsanaḥ) - the subduer of Pāka (Indra); प्रतिसंहृत्य (prati-saṃhṛtya) - having withdrawn; संरम्भम् (saṃrambham) - anger; इति (iti) - thus; उवाच (uvāca) - said; शतक्रतुः (śatakratuḥ) - the hundred-sacrificed (epithet of Indra);]
(Thus having been addressed, the thousand-eyed, the venerable subduer of Pāka (Indra), having withdrawn his anger, thus said, the hundred-sacrificed (Indra).)
Thus addressed, Indra, the thousand-eyed and venerable subduer of Pāka, withdrew his anger and spoke as follows.
सवज्रमुद्यतं बाहुं दृष्ट्वा पाशांश्च वारुणान्। कस्येह न व्यथेद्बुद्धिर्मृत्योरपि जिघांसतः ॥१२-२२०-८९॥
savajramudyataṃ bāhuṃ dṛṣṭvā pāśāṃś ca vāruṇān। kasyeha na vyathed buddhir mṛtyor api jighāṃsataḥ ॥12-220-89॥
[सवज्रम् (savajram) - with thunderbolt; उद्यतं (udyatam) - raised; बाहुं (bāhuṃ) - arm; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; पाशान् (pāśān) - nooses; च (ca) - and; वारुणान् (vāruṇān) - of Varuṇa; कस्य (kasya) - whose; इह (iha) - here; न (na) - not; व्यथेत् (vyathet) - would be disturbed; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - mind; मृत्युः (mṛtyuḥ) - death; अपि (api) - even; जिघांसतः (jighāṃsataḥ) - of one desiring to kill;]
(Having seen the arm raised with the thunderbolt and the nooses of Varuṇa, whose mind here would not be disturbed, even of death desiring to kill?)
Who here would not have their mind shaken, seeing an arm raised with the thunderbolt and the nooses of Varuṇa, even if it were death itself seeking to slay?
सा ते न व्यथते बुद्धिरचला तत्त्वदर्शिनी। ब्रुवन्न व्यथसे स त्वं वाक्यं सत्यपराक्रम ॥१२-२२०-९०॥
sā te na vyathate buddhir acalā tattvadarśinī। bruvann vyathase sa tvaṃ vākyaṃ satyaparākrama ॥12-220-90॥
[सा (sā) - she; ते (te) - your; न (na) - not; व्यथते (vyathate) - is disturbed; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; अचला (acalā) - unwavering; तत्त्वदर्शिनी (tattvadarśinī) - perceiving reality; ब्रुवन् (bruvan) - speaking; न (na) - not; व्यथसे (vyathase) - you are disturbed; सः (saḥ) - he; त्वम् (tvam) - you; वाक्यम् (vākyam) - word; सत्यपराक्रम (satyaparākrama) - one whose valor is truth;]
(She, your intellect, not is disturbed, unwavering, perceiving reality. Speaking, not you are disturbed, he you, word, one whose valor is truth.)
That intellect of yours, unwavering and perceiving reality, is not disturbed. While speaking, you are not disturbed; you are one whose valor is truth.
हो हि विश्वासमर्थेषु शरीरे वा शरीरभृत्। कर्तुमुत्सहते लोके दृष्ट्वा सम्प्रस्थितं जगत् ॥१२-२२०-९१॥
ho hi viśvāsam artheṣu śarīre vā śarīrabhṛt। kartum utsahate loke dṛṣṭvā samprasthitaṃ jagat ॥12-220-91॥
[हो (ho) - indeed; हि (hi) - for; विश्वासम् (viśvāsam) - trust; अर्थेषु (artheṣu) - in objects; शरीरे (śarīre) - in the body; वा (vā) - or; शरीरभृत् (śarīrabhṛt) - the embodied (soul); कर्तुम् (kartum) - to do; उत्सहते (utsahate) - is able; लोके (loke) - in the world; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; सम्प्रस्थितम् (samprasthitam) - set forth; जगत् (jagat) - the world;]
(Indeed, for trust in objects, in the body, or the embodied (soul), is able to do in the world, having seen the world set forth.)
Indeed, in this world, seeing that the world is set in motion, one is able to act, whether trusting in objects, the body, or the embodied soul.
अहमप्येवमेवैनं लोकं जानाम्यशाश्वतम्। कालाग्नावाहितं घोरे गुह्ये सततगेऽक्षरे ॥१२-२२०-९२॥
aham apy evam evainaṃ lokaṃ jānāmy aśāśvatam। kālāgnāv āhitaṃ ghore guhye satatage'kṣare ॥12-220-92॥
[अहम् (aham) - I; अपि (api) - also; एवम् (evam) - thus; एव (eva) - indeed; एनम् (enam) - this; लोकम् (lokam) - world; जानामि (jānāmi) - know; अशाश्वतम् (aśāśvatam) - impermanent; काल-अग्नौ (kāla-agnau) - in the fire of time; आहितम् (āhitam) - placed; घोरे (ghore) - terrible; गुह्ये (guhye) - secret; सतत-गे (satata-ge) - constantly moving; अक्षरे (akṣare) - imperishable;]
(I also thus indeed know this world as impermanent, placed in the fire of time, in the terrible, secret, constantly moving, imperishable.)
I too know this world in the same way—as impermanent, set in the fire of time, within the terrible, secret, ever-moving imperishable.
न चात्र परिहारोऽस्ति कालस्पृष्टस्य कस्यचित्। सूक्ष्माणां महतां चैव भूतानां परिपच्यताम् ॥१२-२२०-९३॥
na cātra parihāro'sti kālaspṛṣṭasya kasyacit। sūkṣmāṇāṃ mahatāṃ caiva bhūtānāṃ paripacyatām ॥12-220-93॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अत्र (atra) - here; परिहारः (parihāraḥ) - removal; अस्ति (asti) - is; कालस्पृष्टस्य (kālaspṛṣṭasya) - of one touched by time; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of anyone; सूक्ष्माणाम् (sūkṣmāṇām) - of the subtle; महताम् (mahatām) - of the great; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; भूतानाम् (bhūtānām) - of beings; परिपच्यताम् (paripacyatām) - of those being matured;]
(And here, there is no removal for anyone touched by time; of the subtle and the great beings indeed, of those being matured.)
Here, there is no escape for anyone touched by time; both subtle and great beings, as they mature, are subject to it.
अनीशस्याप्रमत्तस्य भूतानि पचतः सदा। अनिवृत्तस्य कालस्य क्षयं प्राप्तो न मुच्यते ॥१२-२२०-९४॥
anīśasyāpramattasya bhūtāni pacataḥ sadā। anivṛttasya kālasya kṣayaṃ prāpto na mucyate ॥12-220-94॥
[अनीशस्य (anīśasya) - of one who is not a master; अप्रमत्तस्य (apramattasya) - of one who is not vigilant; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; पचतः (pacataḥ) - of one who cooks; सदा (sadā) - always; अनिवृत्तस्य (anivṛttasya) - of one who does not turn back; कालस्य (kālasya) - of time; क्षयम् (kṣayam) - destruction; प्राप्तः (prāptaḥ) - attained; न (na) - not; मुच्यते (mucyate) - is released;]
(Of one who is not a master, not vigilant, the beings are always cooked. Of time that does not turn back, when destruction is attained, one is not released.)
For one who lacks mastery and vigilance, beings are always consumed. When the irreversible time brings destruction, there is no release.
अप्रमत्तः प्रमत्तेषु कालो जागर्ति देहिषु। प्रयत्नेनाप्यतिक्रान्तो दृष्टपूर्वो न केनचित् ॥१२-२२०-९५॥
apramattaḥ pramatteṣu kālo jāgarti dehiṣu। prayatnenāpyatikrānto dṛṣṭapūrvo na kenacit ॥12-220-95॥
[अप्रमत्तः (apramattaḥ) - not-negligent; प्रमत्तेषु (pramatteṣu) - among the negligent; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; जागर्ति (jāgarti) - remains awake; देहिषु (dehiṣu) - among embodied beings; प्रयत्नेन (prayatnena) - with effort; अपि (api) - even; अतिक्रान्तः (atikrāntaḥ) - has passed; दृष्टपूर्वः (dṛṣṭapūrvaḥ) - previously seen; न (na) - not; केनचित् (kenacit) - by anyone;]
(Not-negligent among the negligent, time remains awake among embodied beings. Even with effort, the previously seen (time) has not been passed by anyone.)
Time, ever alert among the negligent embodied beings, is never overcome by anyone, no matter how much effort is made; no one has ever seen it surpassed.
पुराणः शाश्वतो धर्मः सर्वप्राणभृतां समः। कालो न परिहार्यश्च न चास्यास्ति व्यतिक्रमः ॥१२-२२०-९६॥
purāṇaḥ śāśvato dharmaḥ sarvapraṇabhṛtāṃ samaḥ। kālo na parihāryaśca na cāsyāsti vyatikramaḥ ॥12-220-96॥
[पुराणः (purāṇaḥ) - ancient; शाश्वतः (śāśvataḥ) - eternal; धर्मः (dharmaḥ) - dharma; सर्वप्राणभृतां (sarvapraṇabhṛtām) - of all living beings; समः (samaḥ) - equal; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; न (na) - not; परिहार्यः (parihāryaḥ) - avoidable; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; अस्ति (asti) - there is; व्यतिक्रमः (vyatikramaḥ) - transgression;]
(Ancient, eternal is dharma, equal to all living beings. Time is not avoidable, and there is no transgression of it.)
Dharma is ancient and eternal, impartial to all living beings. Time cannot be avoided, nor can its course be transgressed.
अहोरात्रांश्च मासांश्च क्षणान्काष्ठाः कला लवान्। सम्पिण्डयति नः कालो वृद्धिं वार्धुषिको यथा ॥१२-२२०-९७॥
ahorātrāṃś ca māsāṃś ca kṣaṇān kāṣṭhāḥ kalā lavān। sampiṇḍayati naḥ kālo vṛddhiṃ vārdhuṣiko yathā॥12-220-97॥
[अहोरात्रान् (ahorātrān) - days and nights; च (ca) - and; मासान् (māsān) - months; च (ca) - and; क्षणान् (kṣaṇān) - moments; काष्ठाः (kāṣṭhāḥ) - kāṣṭhas (units of time); कलाः (kalāḥ) - kalās (units of time); लवान् (lavān) - lavās (units of time); सम्पिण्डयति (sampiṇḍayati) - combines; नः (naḥ) - our; कालः (kālaḥ) - Time; वृद्धिम् (vṛddhim) - growth; वार्धुषिकः (vārdhuṣikaḥ) - old age; यथा (yathā) - just as;]
(Time combines our days and nights, months, moments, kāṣṭhas, kalās, and lavās, just as a vārdhuṣika (one who causes growth) does growth and old age.)
Time merges all our days and nights, months, moments, and the smallest units, bringing about our growth and old age, just as an agent of aging would.
इदमद्य करिष्यामि श्वः कर्तास्मीति वादिनम्। कालो हरति सम्प्राप्तो नदीवेग इवोडुपम् ॥१२-२२०-९८॥
idam-adya kariṣyāmi śvaḥ kartāsmīti vādinam। kālo harati samprāpto nadī-vega ivoḍupam॥12-220-98॥
[इदम् (idam) - this; अद्य (adya) - today; करिष्यामि (kariṣyāmi) - I will do; श्वः (śvaḥ) - tomorrow; कर्तास्मि (kartāsmi) - I am the doer; इति (iti) - thus; वादिनम् (vādinam) - one who speaks; कालः (kālaḥ) - time; हरति (harati) - takes away; सम्प्राप्तः (samprāptaḥ) - having arrived; नदीवेगः (nadī-vegaḥ) - river's current; इव (iva) - like; उडुपम् (uḍupam) - a log; ॥१२-२२०-९८॥ (॥12-220-98॥) - ॥12-220-98॥;]
(Time, having arrived, takes away the one who says, "I will do this today, I will do it tomorrow, I am the doer," just like the river's current (takes away) a log.)
Time, when it arrives, sweeps away the person who says, "I will do this today, I will do it tomorrow, I am the doer," just as the current of a river carries away a log.
इदानीं तावदेवासौ मया दृष्टः कथं मृतः। इति कालेन ह्रियतां प्रलापः श्रूयते नृणाम् ॥१२-२२०-९९॥
idānīṃ tāvadevāsaū mayā dṛṣṭaḥ kathaṃ mṛtaḥ। iti kālena hriyatāṃ pralāpaḥ śrūyate nṛṇām ॥12-220-99॥
[इदानीं (idānīṃ) - now; तावत् (tāvat) - just then; एव (eva) - indeed; असौ (asau) - he; मया (mayā) - by me; दृष्टः (dṛṣṭaḥ) - seen; कथम् (katham) - how; मृतः (mṛtaḥ) - dead; इति (iti) - thus; कालेन (kālena) - by time; ह्रियतां (hriyatām) - let it be taken away; प्रलापः (pralāpaḥ) - delirium; श्रूयते (śrūyate) - is heard; नृणाम् (nṛṇām) - of men;]
(Now just then indeed he by me seen, how dead? Thus by time let it be taken away, delirium is heard of men.)
Now, just then, it is heard among men: "He was just seen by me, how is he dead?"—such delirium is carried away by time.
नश्यन्त्यर्थास्तथा भोगाः स्थानमैश्वर्यमेव च। अनित्यमध्रुवं सर्वं व्यवसायो हि दुष्करः ॥ उच्छ्राया विनिपातान्ता भावोऽभावस्थ एव च ॥१२-२२०-१००॥
naśyantyarthāstathā bhogāḥ sthānamaiśvaryameva ca। anityamadhruvaṃ sarvaṃ vyavāsāyo hi duṣkaraḥ ॥ ucchrāyā vinipātāntā bhāvo'bhāvastha eva ca ॥12-220-100॥
[नश्यन्ति (naśyanti) - are destroyed; अर्थाः (arthāḥ) - objects; (of value;) तथा (tathā) - likewise; भोगाः (bhogāḥ) - enjoyments; स्थानम् (sthānam) - position; ऐश्वर्यम् (aiśvaryam) - prosperity; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; अनित्यम् (anityam) - impermanent; अध्रुवम् (adhruvam) - unstable; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; व्यवसायः (vyavasāyaḥ) - undertaking; हि (hi) - indeed; दुष्करः (duṣkaraḥ) - difficult; उच्छ्रायाः (ucchrāyāḥ) - risings; विनिपातान्ताः (vinipātāntāḥ) - ending in downfall; भावः (bhāvaḥ) - existence; अभावस्थः (abhāvasthaḥ) - situated in non-existence; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(Objects are destroyed; likewise enjoyments, position, and prosperity indeed and. Impermanent, unstable, all undertaking indeed difficult. Risings ending in downfall, existence situated in non-existence indeed and.)
Objects, enjoyments, position, and prosperity are all destroyed; everything is impermanent and unstable, and any undertaking is indeed difficult. All rise ends in downfall; existence itself is always accompanied by non-existence.
सा ते न व्यथते बुद्धिरचला तत्त्वदर्शिनी। अहमासं पुरा चेति मनसापि न बुध्यसे ॥१२-२२०-१०१॥
sā te na vyathate buddhiracalā tattvadarśinī। ahamāsaṃ purā ceti manasāpi na budhyase ॥12-220-101॥
[सा (sā) - she; ते (te) - your; न (na) - not; व्यथते (vyathate) - is disturbed; बुद्धिः (buddhiḥ) - intellect; अचला (acalā) - unmoving; तत्त्वदर्शिनी (tattvadarśinī) - perceiving reality; अहम् (aham) - I; आसं (āsaṃ) - was; पुरा (purā) - formerly; च (ca) - and; इति (iti) - thus; मनसा (manasā) - by mind; अपि (api) - even; न (na) - not; बुध्यसे (budhyase) - you understand;]
(She, your intellect, not is disturbed, unmoving, perceiving reality. I was formerly thus, and by mind even not you understand.)
Your intellect, which is unmoving and perceives reality, is not disturbed. You do not understand, even by your mind, that I existed formerly as such.
कालेनाक्रम्य लोकेऽस्मिन्पच्यमाने बलीयसा। अज्येष्ठमकनिष्ठं च क्षिप्यमाणो न बुध्यसे ॥१२-२२०-१०२॥
kālenākramya loke'smin pacyamāne balīyasā। ajyeṣṭham akaniṣṭhaṃ ca kṣipyamāṇo na budhyase॥12-220-102॥
[कालेन (kālena) - by time; आक्रम्य (ākramya) - having overpowered; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; पच्यमाने (pacyamāne) - being cooked (ripened, matured); बलीयसा (balīyasā) - by the stronger; अज्येष्ठम् (ajyeṣṭham) - not the eldest; अकनिष्ठम् (akaniṣṭham) - not the youngest; च (ca) - and; क्षिप्यमाणः (kṣipyamāṇaḥ) - being thrown (cast, tossed about); न (na) - not; बुध्यसे (budhyase) - you perceive;]
(By time, having overpowered, in this world, being cooked (ripened) by the stronger, not the eldest, not the youngest, and, being thrown, you do not perceive.)
Overpowered by time, in this world, as the stronger ripens (destroys) all, you are tossed about, neither the eldest nor the youngest, and you do not perceive it.
ईर्ष्याभिमानलोभेषु कामक्रोधभयेषु च। स्पृहामोहाभिमानेषु लोकः सक्तो विमुह्यति ॥१२-२२०-१०३॥
īrṣyābhimānalobheṣu kāmakrodhabhayeṣu ca। spṛhāmohābhimāneṣu lokaḥ sakto vimuhyati ॥12-220-103॥
