Vyāsa said.
भूतग्रामे नियुक्तं यत्तदेतत्कीर्तितं मया। ब्राह्मणस्य तु यत्कृत्यं तत्ते वक्ष्यामि पृच्छते ॥१२-२२६-१॥
bhūtagrāme niyuktaṃ yattadetatkīrtitaṃ mayā। brāhmaṇasya tu yatkṛtyaṃ tatte vakṣyāmi pṛcchate ॥12-226-1॥
[भूतग्रामे (bhūtagrāme) - in the aggregate of beings; नियुक्तं (niyuktaṃ) - appointed; यत् (yat) - which; तत् (tat) - that; एतत् (etat) - this; कीर्तितं (kīrtitaṃ) - declared; मया (mayā) - by me; ब्राह्मणस्य (brāhmaṇasya) - of the Brāhmaṇa; तु (tu) - but; यत् (yat) - which; कृत्यं (kṛtyaṃ) - duty; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall declare; पृच्छते (pṛcchate) - (to one who is) asking;]
(In the aggregate of beings, that which was appointed, this has been declared by me. But the duty of the Brāhmaṇa, that I shall declare to you who are asking.)
I have already described what was appointed for the aggregate of beings. Now, I shall tell you, who are asking, about the duty of the Brāhmaṇa.
जातकर्मप्रभृत्यस्य कर्मणां दक्षिणावताम्। क्रिया स्यादा समावृत्तेराचार्ये वेदपारगे ॥१२-२२६-२॥
jātakarmaprabhṛtyasya karmaṇāṃ dakṣiṇāvatām। kriyā syādā samāvṛtterācārye vedapārage ॥12-226-2॥
[जातकर्मप्रभृत्यस्य (jātakarmaprabhṛtyasya) - from birth-rites onwards; कर्मणां (karmaṇāṃ) - of rites; दक्षिणावताम् (dakṣiṇāvatām) - having fees; क्रिया (kriyā) - performance; स्यात् (syāt) - should be; आ (ā) - until; समावृत्तेः (samāvṛtteḥ) - completion of study; आचार्ये (ācārye) - in the teacher; वेदपारगे (vedapārage) - versed in the Veda;]
(From birth-rites onwards, the performance of rites having fees should be until the completion of study, in the teacher versed in the Veda.)
From the rite of birth onwards, all rituals requiring fees should be performed until the completion of study, with the teacher who is accomplished in the Veda.
अधीत्य वेदानखिलान्गुरुशुश्रूषणे रतः। गुरूणामनृणो भूत्वा समावर्तेत यज्ञवित् ॥१२-२२६-३॥
adhītya vedānakhilānguruśuśrūṣaṇe rataḥ। gurūṇāmanṛṇo bhūtvā samāvarteta yajñavit ॥12-226-3॥
[अधीत्य (adhītya) - having studied; वेदान् (vedān) - the Vedas; अखिलान् (akhilān) - all; गुरुशुश्रूषणे (guruśuśrūṣaṇe) - in service to the teacher; रतः (rataḥ) - engaged; गुरूणाम् (gurūṇām) - of the teachers; अनृणः (anṛṇaḥ) - not indebted; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; समावर्तेत (samāvarteta) - should graduate; यज्ञवित् (yajñavit) - knower of sacrifice;]
(Having studied all the Vedas, engaged in service to the teacher, having become not indebted to the teachers, the knower of sacrifice should graduate.)
After studying all the Vedas and serving the teacher with devotion, and having discharged all debts to the teachers, the knower of sacrifice should graduate.
आचार्येणाभ्यनुज्ञातश्चतुर्णामेकमाश्रमम्। आ विमोक्षाच्छरीरस्य सोऽनुतिष्ठेद्यथाविधि ॥१२-२२६-४॥
ācāryeṇābhyanujñātaś caturṇām ekam āśramam। ā vimokṣāc charīrasya so'nutiṣṭhed yathāvidhi ॥12-226-4॥
[आचार्येण (ācāryeṇa) - by the teacher; अभ्यनुज्ञातः (abhyanujñātaḥ) - having been permitted; चतुर्णाम् (caturṇām) - of the four; एकम् (ekam) - one; आश्रमम् (āśramam) - āśrama; आ (ā) - until; विमोक्षात् (vimokṣāt) - from the liberation; शरीरस्य (śarīrasya) - of the body; सः (saḥ) - he; अनुतिष्ठेत् (anutiṣṭhet) - should observe; यथाविधि (yathāvidhi) - according to rule;]
(Having been permitted by the teacher, he should observe one of the four āśramas until the liberation from the body, according to rule.)
After being permitted by the teacher, one should properly observe one of the four āśramas until the body is liberated.
प्रजासर्गेण दारैश्च ब्रह्मचर्येण वा पुनः। वने गुरुसकाशे वा यतिधर्मेण वा पुनः ॥१२-२२६-५॥
prajāsargeṇa dāraiś ca brahmacaryeṇa vā punaḥ। vane gurusakāśe vā yatidharmeṇa vā punaḥ ॥12-226-5॥

(By creation of progeny, by wives, and by celibacy, or again; in the forest, in the presence of the teacher, or by the conduct of an ascetic, or again.)
One may achieve the goal either by creating progeny, through married life, by practicing celibacy, or again; in the forest, in the presence of a teacher, or by following the path of an ascetic, or again.
गृहस्थस्त्वेव सर्वेषां चतुर्णां मूलमुच्यते। तत्र पक्वकषायो हि दान्तः सर्वत्र सिध्यति ॥१२-२२६-६॥
gṛhasthas tveva sarveṣāṃ caturṇāṃ mūlam ucyate। tatra pakvakāṣāyo hi dāntaḥ sarvatra sidhyati॥12-226-6॥
[गृहस्थः (gṛhasthaḥ) - householder; तु (tu) - but; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वेषां (sarveṣām) - of all; चतुर्णां (caturṇām) - of the four; मूलम् (mūlam) - root; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said; तत्र (tatra) - there; पक्वकषायः (pakvakāṣāyaḥ) - one whose passions are ripened; हि (hi) - indeed; दान्तः (dāntaḥ) - self-restrained; सर्वत्र (sarvatra) - everywhere; सिध्यति (sidhyati) - succeeds;]
(The householder indeed is said to be the root of all four (orders). There, one whose passions are ripened, who is indeed self-restrained, succeeds everywhere.)
The householder is regarded as the foundation of all four orders. There, one whose passions are matured and who is self-controlled, succeeds everywhere.
प्रजावाञ्श्रोत्रियो यज्वा मुक्तो दिव्यैस्त्रिभिरृणैः। अथान्यानाश्रमान्पश्चात्पूतो गच्छति कर्मभिः ॥१२-२२६-७॥

[प्रजावान् (prajāvān) - having progeny; श्रोत्रियः (śrotriyaḥ) - versed in the Vedas; यज्वा (yajvā) - performer of sacrifices; मुक्तः (muktaḥ) - freed; दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) - by divine; त्रिभिः (tribhiḥ) - three; ऋणैः (ṛṇaiḥ) - debts; अथ (atha) - then; अन्यान् (anyān) - other; आश्रमान् (āśramān) - āśramas; पश्चात् (paścāt) - after; पूतः (pūtaḥ) - purified; गच्छति (gacchati) - goes; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions;]
(Having progeny, versed in the Vedas, performer of sacrifices, freed from the three divine debts, then, after being purified by actions, goes to the other āśramas.)
One who has progeny, is learned in the Vedas, and performs sacrifices, after being freed from the three divine debts, then, purified by actions, proceeds to the other āśramas.
यत्पृथिव्यां पुण्यतमं विद्यास्थानं तदावसेत्। यतेत तस्मिन्प्रामाण्यं गन्तुं यशसि चोत्तमे ॥१२-२२६-८॥
yat-pṛthivyāṃ puṇyatamaṃ vidyāsthānaṃ tadāvaset। yateta tasmin prāmāṇyaṃ gantuṃ yaśasi cottame ॥12-226-8॥
[यत् (yat) - which; पृथिव्यां (pṛthivyāṃ) - on earth; पुण्यतमं (puṇyatamam) - most meritorious; विद्यास्थानं (vidyāsthānam) - place of knowledge; तत् (tat) - that; आवसेत् (āvaset) - should reside; यतेत (yateta) - should strive; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; प्रामाण्यं (prāmāṇyam) - authenticity; गन्तुम् (gantum) - to attain; यशसि (yaśasi) - in fame; च (ca) - and; उत्तमे (uttame) - supreme;]
(Which on earth is the most meritorious place of knowledge, there one should reside; one should strive in that for authenticity and to attain supreme fame.)
One should reside in that place on earth which is the most meritorious for knowledge; one should strive there for authenticity and for attaining the highest fame.
तपसा वा सुमहता विद्यानां पारणेन वा। इज्यया वा प्रदानैर्वा विप्राणां वर्धते यशः ॥१२-२२६-९॥
tapasā vā sumahatā vidyānāṃ pāraṇena vā। ijyayā vā pradānairvā viprāṇāṃ vardhate yaśaḥ ॥12-226-9॥
[तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; वा (vā) - or; सुमहता (sumahatā) - by great (means); विद्यानां (vidyānāṃ) - of knowledges; पारणेन (pāraṇena) - by recitation; वा (vā) - or; इज्यया (ijyayā) - by worship; वा (vā) - or; प्रदानैः (pradānaiḥ) - by gifts; वा (vā) - or; विप्राणां (viprāṇām) - of Brāhmaṇas; वर्धते (vardhate) - increases; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame;]
(By austerity or by great (means) of knowledges, by recitation or by worship or by gifts, the fame of Brāhmaṇas increases.)
The fame of Brāhmaṇas grows through austerity, great knowledge, recitation, worship, or giving gifts.
यावदस्य भवत्यस्मिँल्लोके कीर्तिर्यशस्करी। तावत्पुण्यकृताँल्लोकाननन्तान्पुरुषोऽश्नुते ॥१२-२२६-१०॥
yāvad asya bhavati asmin loke kīrtiḥ yaśaskarī। tāvat puṇyakṛtām lokān anantān puruṣaḥ aśnute ॥12-226-10॥
[यावत् (yāvat) - as long as; अस्य (asya) - of him; भवति (bhavati) - there is; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; लोके (loke) - world; कीर्तिः (kīrtiḥ) - fame; यशस्करी (yaśaskarī) - bestowing glory; तावत् (tāvat) - so long; पुण्यकृताम् (puṇyakṛtām) - of the doers of merit; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; अनन्तान् (anantān) - endless; पुरुषः (puruṣaḥ) - a person; अश्नुते (aśnute) - attains;]
(As long as there is fame bestowing glory of him in this world, so long a person attains the endless worlds of the doers of merit.)
As long as his glorious fame endures in this world, a person enjoys the endless worlds attained by the meritorious.
अध्यापयेदधीयीत याजयेत यजेत च। न वृथा प्रतिगृह्णीयान्न च दद्यात्कथञ्चन ॥१२-२२६-११॥
adhyāpayedadhīyīta yājayet yajeta ca। na vṛthā pratigṛhṇīyān na ca dadyāt kathañcana ॥12-226-11॥
[अध्यापयेत् (adhyāpayet) - he should cause to be taught; अधीयीत (adhīyīta) - he should study; याजयेत् (yājayet) - he should cause to perform sacrifice; यजेत् (yajeta) - he should sacrifice; च (ca) - and; न (na) - not; वृथा (vṛthā) - in vain; प्रतिगृह्णीयात् (pratigṛhṇīyāt) - he should accept (gifts); न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - he should give; कथञ्चन (kathañcana) - in any way;]
(He should cause to be taught, should study, should cause to perform sacrifice, and should sacrifice; he should not accept (gifts) in vain, nor should he give in any way.)
He should teach, study, officiate at sacrifices, and perform sacrifices; he should not accept gifts in vain, nor should he give them in any way.
याज्यतः शिष्यतो वापि कन्यया वा धनं महत्। यद्यागच्छेद्यजेद्दद्यान्नैकोऽश्नीयात्कथञ्चन ॥१२-२२६-१२॥
yājyataḥ śiṣyato vāpi kanyayā vā dhanaṃ mahat। yadyāgacched yajed dadyān naiko'śnīyāt kathaṃcana ॥12-226-12॥
[याज्यतः (yājyataḥ) - from one who is to be sacrificed for; शिष्यतः (śiṣyataḥ) - from a disciple; वा (vā) - or; अपि (api) - even; कन्यया (kanyayā) - by a maiden; वा (vā) - or; धनं (dhanaṃ) - wealth; महत् (mahat) - great; यदि (yadi) - if; आगच्छेत् (āgacchet) - should come; यजेत् (yajet) - should sacrifice; दद्यात् (dadyāt) - should give; न (na) - not; एकः (ekaḥ) - alone; अश्नीयात् (aśnīyāt) - should eat; कथञ्चन (kathaṃcana) - in any way;]
(From one who is to be sacrificed for, from a disciple, or even by a maiden, or great wealth—if it should come, one should sacrifice, should give; one should not eat alone in any way.)
If great wealth comes from one who is to be sacrificed for, from a disciple, or from a maiden, one should use it for sacrifice or charity; one should never consume it alone in any way.
गृहमावसतो ह्यस्य नान्यत्तीर्थं प्रतिग्रहात्। देवर्षिपितृगुर्वर्थं वृद्धातुरबुभुक्षताम् ॥१२-२२६-१३॥
gṛham āvasato hy asya nānyat tīrthaṃ pratigrahāt। devarṣipitṛgurvarthaṃ vṛddhāturabubhukṣatām ॥12-226-13॥
[गृहम् (gṛham) - house; आवसतः (āvasataḥ) - of the resident; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - of him; न (na) - not; अन्यत् (anyat) - other; तीर्थम् (tīrtham) - sacred place; प्रतिग्रहात् (pratigrahāt) - than the receiving (of gifts); देव (deva) - for the gods; ऋषि (ṛṣi) - for the sages; पितृ (pitṛ) - for the ancestors; गुरु (guru) - for the teachers; अर्थम् (artham) - for the sake of; वृद्ध (vṛddha) - for the aged; अतुर (atura) - for the sick; अभुभुक्षताम् (abubhukṣatām) - for the hungry;]
(For one residing in a house, indeed, for him, there is no other sacred place than the receiving (of gifts) for the sake of gods, sages, ancestors, teachers, the aged, the sick, and the hungry.)
For a householder, there is no greater sacred act than accepting gifts for the sake of the gods, sages, ancestors, teachers, the aged, the sick, and the hungry.
अन्तर्हिताभितप्तानां यथाशक्ति बुभूषताम्। द्रव्याणामतिशक्त्यापि देयमेषां कृतादपि ॥१२-२२६-१४॥
antarhitābhitaptānāṃ yathāśakti bubhūṣatām। dravyāṇāmatiśaktyāpi deyameṣāṃ kṛtādapi ॥12-226-14॥
[अन्तर्हित (antarhita) - hidden; अभितप्तानां (abhitaptānāṃ) - of those who are greatly afflicted; यथा (yathā) - according to; शक्ति (śakti) - ability; बुभूषताम् (bubhūṣatām) - of those who wish to live; द्रव्याणाम् (dravyāṇām) - of wealth; अतिशक्त्या (atiśaktyā) - beyond one's capacity; अपि (api) - even; देयम् (deyam) - should be given; एषाम् (eṣām) - to these; कृतात् (kṛtāt) - even from what is earned; अपि (api) - even;]
(To those hidden and greatly afflicted, who wish to live, wealth should be given according to ability, and even beyond one's capacity, even from what is earned.)

अर्हतामनुरूपाणां नादेयं ह्यस्ति किञ्चन। उच्चैःश्रवसमप्यश्वं प्रापणीयं सतां विदुः ॥१२-२२६-१५॥

[अर्हताम् (arhatām) - of the worthy; अनुरूपाणाम् (anurūpāṇām) - befitting; न (na) - not; अदेयम् (adeyam) - not to be given; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्ति (asti) - there is; किञ्चन (kiñcana) - anything; उच्चैःश्रवसम् (uccaiḥśravasam) - Uccaiḥśravas (the divine horse); अपि (api) - even; अश्वम् (aśvam) - horse; प्रापणीयम् (prāpaṇīyam) - to be obtained; सताम् (satām) - of the good; विदुः (viduḥ) - they know;]
(Of the worthy, befitting, there is indeed nothing not to be given; even Uccaiḥśravas, the horse, is to be obtained, the good know.)
For those who are worthy, nothing befitting them is to be withheld; even the horse Uccaiḥśravas should be acquired for the virtuous, as the good know.
अनुनीय तथा काव्यः सत्यसन्धो महाव्रतः। स्वैः प्राणैर्ब्राह्मणप्राणान्परित्राय दिवं गतः ॥१२-२२६-१६॥
anunīya tathā kāvyaḥ satyasanndho mahāvrataḥ। svaiḥ prāṇairbrāhmaṇaprāṇānparitrāya divaṃ gataḥ ॥12-226-16॥
[अनुनीय (anunīya) - to be followed; तथा (tathā) - likewise; काव्यः (kāvyaḥ) - Kāvya (Śukra); सत्यसन्धः (satyasandhaḥ) - truthful; महाव्रतः (mahāvrataḥ) - of great vows; स्वैः (svaiḥ) - by his own; प्राणैः (prāṇaiḥ) - lives; ब्राह्मणप्राणान् (brāhmaṇaprāṇān) - the lives of Brāhmaṇas; परित्राय (paritrāya) - to save; दिवं (divaṃ) - to heaven; गतः (gataḥ) - went;]
(To be followed likewise Kāvya (Śukra), truthful, of great vows, by his own lives, to save the lives of Brāhmaṇas, went to heaven.)
Likewise, Kāvya (Śukra), who was truthful and of great vows, gave up his own life to save the lives of Brāhmaṇas and ascended to heaven.
रन्तिदेवश्च साङ्कृत्यो वसिष्ठाय महात्मने। अपः प्रदाय शीतोष्णा नाकपृष्ठे महीयते ॥१२-२२६-१७॥
rantidevaś ca sāṅkṛtyo vasiṣṭhāya mahātmane। apaḥ pradāya śītoṣṇā nākapṛṣṭhe mahīyate ॥12-226-17॥

आत्रेयश्चन्द्रदमयोरर्हतोर्विविधं धनम्। दत्त्वा लोकान्ययौ धीमाननन्तान्स महीपतिः ॥१२-२२६-१८॥
ātreyaś candradamayor arhator vividhaṃ dhanam। dattvā lokān yayau dhīmān anantān sa mahīpatiḥ ॥12-226-18॥

(To Ātreya and Candradamaya, the venerable ones, various wealth having given, worlds endless he went, the wise, he the king.)
The wise king, having given various wealth to the venerable Ātreya and Candradamaya, went to endless worlds.
शिबिरौशीनरोऽङ्गानि सुतं च प्रियमौरसम्। ब्राह्मणार्थमुपाकृत्य नाकपृष्ठमितो गतः ॥१२-२२६-१९॥
śibirauśīnaro'ṅgāni sutaṃ ca priyamaurasam। brāhmaṇārthamupākṛtya nākapṛṣṭhamito gataḥ ॥12-226-19॥
[शिबिर (śibira) - camp; औशीनरः (auśīnaraḥ) - king Uśīnara; अङ्गानि (aṅgāni) - limbs; सुतम् (sutam) - son; च (ca) - and; प्रिय (priya) - dear; मौरसम् (maurasam) - born of the loins; ब्राह्मणार्थम् (brāhmaṇārtham) - for the sake of a Brāhmaṇa; उपाकृत्य (upākṛtya) - having offered; नाकपृष्ठम् (nākapṛṣṭham) - heaven; इतः (itaḥ) - from here; गतः (gataḥ) - has gone;]
(Camp, king Uśīnara, limbs, son and dear born of the loins, for the sake of a Brāhmaṇa, having offered, heaven, from here, has gone.)
Having offered the camp, king Uśīnara's limbs, his son and dear offspring for the sake of a Brāhmaṇa, he has departed from here to heaven.
प्रतर्दनः काशिपतिः प्रदाय नयने स्वके। ब्राह्मणायातुलां कीर्तिमिह चामुत्र चाश्नुते ॥१२-२२६-२०॥
pratardanaḥ kāśipatiḥ pradāya nayane svake। brāhmaṇāyātulāṃ kīrtimiha cāmutra cāśnute ॥12-226-20॥
