शरीराद्विप्रमुक्तं हि सूक्ष्मभूतं शरीरिणम्। कर्मभिः परिपश्यन्ति शास्त्रोक्तैः शास्त्रचेतसः ॥१२-२४५-१॥
śarīrād vipramuktaṃ hi sūkṣmabhūtaṃ śarīriṇam। karmabhiḥ paripaśyanti śāstroktaiḥ śāstracetasaḥ ॥12-245-1॥
[शरीरात् (śarīrāt) - from the body; विप्रमुक्तं (vipramuktam) - completely released; हि (hi) - indeed; सूक्ष्मभूतं (sūkṣmabhūtam) - subtle being; शरीरिणम् (śarīriṇam) - the embodied one; कर्मभिः (karmabhiḥ) - by actions; परिपश्यन्ति (paripaśyanti) - they perceive; शास्त्रोक्तैः (śāstroktaiḥ) - as stated in the śāstra; शास्त्रचेतसः (śāstracetasaḥ) - those whose minds are on the śāstra;]
(From the body, the completely released, indeed, subtle being, the embodied one; by actions, they perceive, as stated in the śāstra, those whose minds are on the śāstra.)
Those whose minds are fixed on the śāstra perceive, by actions as stated in the śāstra, the subtle being—the embodied one—who is indeed completely released from the body.
यथा मरीच्यः सहिताश्चरन्ति; गच्छन्ति तिष्ठन्ति च दृश्यमानाः। देहैर्विमुक्ता विचरन्ति लोकां; स्तथैव सत्त्वान्यतिमानुषाणि ॥१२-२४५-२॥
yathā marīcyaḥ sahitāś caranti; gacchanti tiṣṭhanti ca dṛśyamānāḥ। dehair vimuktā vicaranti lokān; tathaiva sattvāny atimānuṣāṇi ॥12-245-2॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; मरीच्यः (marīcyaḥ) - rays (of light); सहिताः (sahitāḥ) - together; चरन्ति (caranti) - move; गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; तिष्ठन्ति (tiṣṭhanti) - stand; च (ca) - and; दृश्यमानाः (dṛśyamānāḥ) - being seen; देहैः (dehaiḥ) - from bodies; विमुक्ताः (vimuktāḥ) - freed; विचरन्ति (vicaranti) - move about; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; तथा (tathā) - so; एव (eva) - indeed; सत्त्वानि (sattvāni) - beings; अतिमानुषाणि (atimānuṣāṇi) - superhuman;]
(Just as rays (of light), together, move, go, stand, and are seen; freed from bodies, move about worlds; so indeed beings superhuman.)
Just as rays of light, moving together, go, stand, and are seen, so too, when freed from their bodies, do superhuman beings move about the worlds.
प्रतिरूपं यथैवाप्सु तापः सूर्यस्य लक्ष्यते। सत्त्ववांस्तु तथा सत्त्वं प्रतिरूपं प्रपश्यति ॥१२-२४५-३॥
pratirūpaṃ yathaivāpsu tāpaḥ sūryasya lakṣyate। sattvavāṃstu tathā sattvaṃ pratirūpaṃ prapaśyati ॥12-245-3॥
[प्रतिरूपं (pratirūpaṃ) - reflection; यथा (yathā) - just as; एव (eva) - indeed; अप्सु (apsu) - in water; तापः (tāpaḥ) - heat; सूर्यस्य (sūryasya) - of the sun; लक्ष्यते (lakṣyate) - is perceived; सत्त्ववान् (sattvavān) - one possessing purity; तु (tu) - but; तथा (tathā) - in the same way; सत्त्वं (sattvaṃ) - purity; प्रतिरूपं (pratirūpaṃ) - reflection; प्रपश्यति (prapaśyati) - clearly perceives;]
(Reflection just as indeed in water heat of the sun is perceived; one possessing purity but in the same way purity reflection clearly perceives.)
Just as the heat of the sun is perceived as a reflection in water, so too does a person of purity clearly perceive the reflection of purity.
तानि सूक्ष्माणि सत्त्वस्था विमुक्तानि शरीरतः। स्वेन तत्त्वेन तत्त्वज्ञाः पश्यन्ति नियतेन्द्रियाः ॥१२-२४५-४॥
tāni sūkṣmāṇi sattvasthā vimuktāni śarīrataḥ। svena tattvena tattvajñāḥ paśyanti niyatendriyāḥ ॥12-245-4॥

(Those subtle ones, situated in sattva, liberated from the body, by their own principle, the knowers of the principle with controlled senses see.)
The knowers of the principle, whose senses are controlled, see those subtle entities, established in sattva and liberated from the body, by their own principle.
स्वपतां जाग्रतां चैव सर्वेषामात्मचिन्तितम्। प्रधानद्वैधयुक्तानां जहतां कर्मजं रजः ॥१२-२४५-५॥
svapatāṃ jāgratāṃ caiva sarveṣām ātmacintitam। pradhānadvaidhayuktānāṃ jahatāṃ karmajaṃ rajaḥ ॥12-245-5॥
[स्वपताम् (svapatām) - of those who are sleeping; जाग्रताम् (jāgratām) - of those who are awake; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; आत्मचिन्तितम् (ātmacintitam) - thought by the self; प्रधानद्वैधयुक्तानाम् (pradhānadvaidhayuktānām) - of those endowed with the duality of the primordial matter; जहताम् (jahatām) - of those who have abandoned; कर्मजम् (karmajam) - born of action; रजः (rajaḥ) - passion (rajas);]
(The passion (rajas) born of action, of those who are sleeping, of those who are awake, and indeed of all, thought by the self, of those endowed with the duality of the primordial matter, of those who have abandoned.)
The rajas (passion) arising from action, whether in those who sleep or those who are awake, in all beings, as conceived by the self, and in those associated with the duality of primordial matter, is abandoned.
यथाहनि तथा रात्रौ यथा रात्रौ तथाहनि। वशे तिष्ठति सत्त्वात्मा सततं योगयोगिनाम् ॥१२-२४५-६॥
yathāhani tathā rātrau yathā rātrau tathāhani। vaśe tiṣṭhati sattvātmā satataṃ yogayoginām ॥12-245-6॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; अहनि (ahani) - in the day; तथा (tathā) - so; रात्रौ (rātrau) - in the night; यथा (yathā) - just as; रात्रौ (rātrau) - in the night; तथा (tathā) - so; अहनि (ahani) - in the day; वशे (vaśe) - under control; तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati) - remains; सत्त्वात्मा (sattvātmā) - one whose self is purity; सततं (satataṃ) - always; योगयोगिनाम् (yogayoginām) - of the yogis practicing yoga;]
(Just as in the day, so in the night; just as in the night, so in the day; under control remains one whose self is purity, always, of the yogis practicing yoga.)
For the yogis practicing yoga, one whose self is pure remains always under control, experiencing no difference between day and night.
तेषां नित्यं सदानित्यो भूतात्मा सततं गुणैः। सप्तभिस्त्वन्वितः सूक्ष्मैश्चरिष्णुरजरामरः ॥१२-२४५-७॥
teṣāṃ nityaṃ sadānityo bhūtātmā satataṃ guṇaiḥ| saptabhistvanvitaḥ sūkṣmaiścariṣṇurajarāmaraḥ ॥12-245-7॥
[तेषां (teṣām) - of them; नित्यं (nityam) - eternal; सदा (sadā) - always; अनित्यः (anityaḥ) - impermanent; भूतात्मा (bhūtātmā) - the self of beings; सततं (satataṃ) - constantly; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - by qualities; सप्तभिः (saptabhiḥ) - by seven; तु (tu) - but; अन्वितः (anvitaḥ) - endowed; सूक्ष्मैः (sūkṣmaiḥ) - with subtle; चरिष्णुः (cariṣṇuḥ) - moving; अजर (ajara) - ageless; अमरः (amaraḥ) - immortal;]
(Of them, the eternal, always impermanent, the self of beings, constantly by qualities, by seven but endowed, with subtle, moving, ageless, immortal.)
Among them, the Self of beings is eternal, yet always impermanent, constantly associated with qualities, endowed with seven subtle (principles), ever moving, ageless, and immortal.
मनोबुद्धिपराभूतः स्वदेहपरदेहवित्। स्वप्नेष्वपि भवत्येष विज्ञाता सुखदुःखयोः ॥१२-२४५-८॥
manobuddhiparābhūtaḥ svadehaparadehavit| svapneṣvapi bhavatyeṣa vijñātā sukhaduḥkhayoḥ ||12-245-8||
[मनोबुद्धि (manobuddhi) - mind and intellect; पराभूतः (parābhūtaḥ) - overcome; defeated; स्वदेह (svadeha) - one's own body; परदेह (paradeha) - another's body; वित् (vit) - knower; possessor; स्वप्नेषु (svapneṣu) - in dreams; अपि (api) - even; also; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; is; एष (eṣa) - this (one); विज्ञाता (vijñātā) - knower; perceiver; सुखदुःखयोः (sukhaduḥkhayoḥ) - of pleasure and pain;]
(Overcome by mind and intellect, the knower of one's own and another's body, even in dreams, this one becomes the perceiver of pleasure and pain.)
Even when overcome by mind and intellect, the one who knows both his own and others' bodies becomes, even in dreams, the perceiver of pleasure and pain.
तत्रापि लभते दुःखं तत्रापि लभते सुखम्। क्रोधलोभौ तु तत्रापि कृत्वा व्यसनमर्छति ॥१२-२४५-९॥
tatrāpi labhate duḥkhaṃ tatrāpi labhate sukham। krodhalobhau tu tatrāpi kṛtvā vyasanam arcchati ॥12-245-9॥
[तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; लभते (labhate) - obtains; दुःखं (duḥkham) - suffering; तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; लभते (labhate) - obtains; सुखम् (sukham) - happiness; क्रोध (krodha) - anger; लोभौ (lobhau) - and greed; तु (tu) - but; तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having done; व्यसनम् (vyasanam) - misfortune; अर्छति (arcchati) - attains;]
(There also obtains suffering, there also obtains happiness. But having done anger and greed there also, attains misfortune.)
Even there, one experiences both suffering and happiness. But if one succumbs to anger and greed even there, one meets with misfortune.
प्रीणितश्चापि भवति महतोऽर्थानवाप्य च। करोति पुण्यं तत्रापि जाग्रन्निव च पश्यति ॥१२-२४५-१०॥
prīṇitaś cāpi bhavati mahato'rthānavāpya ca। karoti puṇyaṃ tatrāpi jāgrann iva ca paśyati ॥12-245-10॥
[प्रीणितः (prīṇitaḥ) - pleased; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; महतः (mahataḥ) - of the great; अर्थान् (arthān) - objects; अनवाप्य (anavāpya) - not having obtained; च (ca) - and; करोति (karoti) - does; पुण्यम् (puṇyam) - merit; तत्र (tatra) - there; अपि (api) - also; जाग्रन् (jāgran) - awake; इव (iva) - as if; च (ca) - and; पश्यति (paśyati) - sees;]
(Pleased and also becomes, of the great objects not having obtained and, does merit there also, awake as if and sees.)
Even without obtaining great objects, one who is pleased also performs meritorious acts there, and, as if awake, perceives them.
तमेवमतितेजोंशं भूतात्मानं हृदि स्थितम्। तमोरजोभ्यामाविष्टा नानुपश्यन्ति मूर्तिषु ॥१२-२४५-११॥
tamevaṁ atitejoṁśaṁ bhūtātmānaṁ hṛdi sthitam। tamorajobhyām āviṣṭā nānupaśyanti mūrtiṣu ॥12-245-11॥
[तम् (tam) - him; एवम् (evam) - thus; अति-तेजः-अंशम् (ati-tejaḥ-aṁśam) - exceedingly-radiant-part; भूत-आत्मानम् (bhūta-ātmānam) - elemental-self; हृदि (hṛdi) - in the heart; स्थितम् (sthitam) - abiding; तमस्-रजः-भ्याम् (tamas-rajaḥ-bhyām) - by darkness and passion; आविष्टाः (āviṣṭāḥ) - overpowered; न (na) - not; अनुपश्यन्ति (anupaśyanti) - perceive; मूर्तिषु (mūrtiṣu) - in forms;]
(Him, thus, the exceedingly radiant part, the elemental self, abiding in the heart, overpowered by darkness and passion, do not perceive in forms.)
Those who are overpowered by darkness and passion do not perceive, in forms, that exceedingly radiant elemental self abiding in the heart.
शास्त्रयोगपरा भूत्वा स्वमात्मानं परीप्सवः। अनुच्छ्वासान्यमूर्तीनि यानि वज्रोपमान्यपि ॥१२-२४५-१२॥
śāstrayogaparā bhūtvā svamātmānaṃ parīpsavaḥ। anucchvāsānyamūrtīni yāni vajropamānyapi ॥12-245-12॥
[शास्त्र (śāstra) - scripture; योग (yoga) - union; परा (parā) - supreme; भूत्वा (bhūtvā) - having become; स्वम् (svam) - own; आत्मानं (ātmānaṃ) - self; परीप्सवः (parīpsavaḥ) - desiring to obtain; अनुच्छ्वासानि (anucchvāsāni) - breathless; अमूर्तीनि (amūrtīni) - formless; यानि (yāni) - which; वज्र (vajra) - diamond; उपमानि (upamāni) - like; अपि (api) - even;]
(Having become devoted to the supreme union with scripture, desiring to obtain their own self, breathless, formless, which are even like diamonds.)
Having become devoted to the supreme union with scripture, desiring to realize their own self, they are breathless and formless, which are even like diamonds.
पृथग्भूतेषु सृष्टेषु चतुर्ष्वाश्रमकर्मसु। समाधौ योगमेवैतच्छाण्डिल्यः शममब्रवीत् ॥१२-२४५-१३॥
pṛthagbhūteṣu sṛṣṭeṣu caturṣvāśramakarmasu। samādhau yogamevaitacchāṇḍilyaḥ śamamabravīt ॥12-245-13॥
[पृथग्भूतेषु (pṛthagbhūteṣu) - in the distinct beings; सृष्टेषु (sṛṣṭeṣu) - in the created ones; चतुर्षु (caturṣu) - in the four; आश्रमकर्मसु (āśramakarmasu) - in the duties of the āśramas; समाधौ (samādhau) - in concentration; योगम् (yogam) - union; एव (eva) - indeed; एतत् (etat) - this; शाण्डिल्यः (śāṇḍilyaḥ) - Śāṇḍilya; शमम् (śamam) - tranquility; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said;]
(In the distinct beings, in the created ones, in the four duties of the āśramas, in concentration, union indeed—this Śāṇḍilya said is tranquility.)
Śāṇḍilya declared that tranquility is nothing but union (yoga) in concentration, whether among distinct beings, created entities, or in the four āśrama duties.
विदित्वा सप्त सूक्ष्माणि षडङ्गं च महेश्वरम्। प्रधानविनियोगस्थः परं ब्रह्माधिगच्छति ॥१२-२४५-१४॥
viditvā sapta sūkṣmāṇi ṣaḍ-aṅgaṃ ca maheśvaram। pradhāna-viniyoga-sthaḥ paraṃ brahmādhigacchati ॥12-245-14॥
[विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; सप्त (sapta) - seven; सूक्ष्माणि (sūkṣmāṇi) - subtle (things); षडङ्गं (ṣaḍ-aṅgam) - six limbs; च (ca) - and; महेश्वरम् (maheśvaram) - the great Lord; प्रधानविनियोगस्थः (pradhāna-viniyoga-sthaḥ) - situated in the principal application; परं (param) - supreme; ब्रह्म (brahma) - Brahman; अधिगच्छति (adhigacchati) - attains;]
(Having known the seven subtle (things), the six limbs, and the great Lord, one situated in the principal application attains the supreme Brahman.)
By knowing the seven subtle principles, the six limbs, and the great Lord, one who is established in the principal application attains the supreme Brahman.
