नमस्तस्मै भगवते देवाय प्रभविष्णवे। यस्य पृथ्वीतलं तात साकाशं बाहुगोचरम् ॥१२-२७१-१॥
namas tasmai bhagavate devāya prabhaviṣṇave। yasya pṛthvī-talaṃ tāta sākāśaṃ bāhu-gocaram ॥12-271-1॥
[नमः (namaḥ) - salutation; तस्मै (tasmai) - to him; भगवते (bhagavate) - to the divine; देवाय (devāya) - to the god; प्रभविष्णवे (prabhaviṣṇave) - to the all-powerful; यस्य (yasya) - whose; पृथ्वी (pṛthvī) - earth; तलम् (talam) - surface; तात (tāta) - O dear one; साकाशम् (sākāśam) - in the presence; बाहु (bāhu) - arm; गोचरम् (gocaram) - within the range;]
(Salutation to him, to the divine, to the god, to the all-powerful; whose earth's surface, O dear one, is within the range of his arms, in his presence.)
Salutations to that divine, the god, the all-powerful, whose reach encompasses the surface of the earth, O dear one, all within the span of his arms.
मूर्धा यस्य त्वनन्तं च स्थानं दानवसत्तम। तस्याहं ते प्रवक्ष्यामि विष्णोर्माहात्म्यमुत्तमम् ॥१२-२७१-२॥

(Head whose your endless and place O best of Dānavas; of him I to you shall declare of Viṣṇu greatness supreme.)
O best of Dānavas, whose head and place are endless, I shall declare to you the supreme greatness of Viṣṇu.

तयोः संवदतोरेवमाजगाम महामुनिः। सनत्कुमारो धर्मात्मा संशयच्छेदनाय वै ॥१२-२७१-३॥
tayoḥ saṁvadatorevamājagāma mahāmuniḥ। sanatkumāro dharmātmā saṁśayacchedanāya vai ॥12-271-3॥
[तयोः (tayoḥ) - of those two; संवदतोः (saṁvadatoḥ) - while conversing; एवम् (evam) - thus; आजगाम (ājagāma) - arrived; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage; सनत्कुमारः (sanatkumāraḥ) - Sanatkumāra; धर्मात्मा (dharmātmā) - righteous-souled; संशयच्छेदनाय (saṁśayacchedanāya) - for the removal of doubt; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Of those two, while conversing thus, the great sage Sanatkumāra, righteous-souled, indeed arrived for the removal of doubt.)
As those two were conversing in this manner, the great sage Sanatkumāra, who was righteous-souled, arrived there to resolve their doubts.
स पूजितोऽसुरेन्द्रेण मुनिनोशनसा तथा। निषसादासने राजन्महार्हे मुनिपुङ्गवः ॥१२-२७१-४॥
sa pūjito'surendreṇa muninośanasā tathā। niṣasādāsane rājanmahārhe munipuṅgavaḥ ॥12-271-4॥

तमासीनं महाप्राज्ञमुशना वाक्यमब्रवीत्। ब्रूह्यस्मै दानवेन्द्राय विष्णोर्माहात्म्यमुत्तमम् ॥१२-२७१-५॥

सनत्कुमारस्तु ततः श्रुत्वा प्राह वचोऽर्थवत्। विष्णोर्माहात्म्यसंयुक्तं दानवेन्द्राय धीमते ॥१२-२७१-६॥

शृणु सर्वमिदं दैत्य विष्णोर्माहात्म्यमुत्तमम्। विष्णौ जगत्स्थितं सर्वमिति विद्धि परन्तप ॥१२-२७१-७॥

(Hear all this, O Daitya, the supreme greatness of Viṣṇu. In Viṣṇu, the whole world abides; thus know, O scorcher of foes.)
O Daitya, listen to the supreme greatness of Viṣṇu. Know, O scorcher of foes, that the entire world abides in Viṣṇu.
सृजत्येष महाबाहो भूतग्रामं चराचरम्। एष चाक्षिपते काले काले विसृजते पुनः ॥ अस्मिन्गच्छन्ति विलयमस्माच्च प्रभवन्त्युत ॥१२-२७१-८॥
sṛjaty eṣa mahābāho bhūtagrāmaṃ carācaram। eṣa cākṣipate kāle kāle visṛjate punaḥ ॥ asmin gacchanti vilayam asmāc ca prabhavanty uta ॥12-271-8॥
[सृजति (sṛjati) - creates; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (one); महाबाहो (mahābāho) - O mighty-armed (one); भूतग्रामम् (bhūtagrāmam) - the multitude of beings; चराचरम् (carācaram) - moving and unmoving; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this (one); च (ca) - and; आक्षिपते (ākṣipate) - withdraws; काले काले (kāle kāle) - from time to time; विसृजते (visṛjate) - sends forth; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अस्मिन् (asmin) - into this (one); गच्छन्ति (gacchanti) - go; विलयम् (vilayam) - to dissolution; अस्मात् (asmāt) - from this (one); च (ca) - and; प्रभवन्ति (prabhavanti) - arise; उत (uta) - indeed;]
(This (one), O mighty-armed, creates the multitude of beings, moving and unmoving. This (one) also withdraws (them) from time to time, and again sends (them) forth. Into this (one) (they) go to dissolution, and from this (one) (they) indeed arise.)
O mighty-armed one, this being creates the multitude of living and non-living entities. He also withdraws them periodically and again sends them forth. Into him they dissolve, and from him they indeed arise.
नैष दानवता शक्यस्तपसा नैव चेज्यया। सम्प्राप्तुमिन्द्रियाणां तु संयमेनैव शक्यते ॥१२-२७१-९॥
naiṣa dānavatā śakyastapasā naiva cejyayā। samprāptumindriyāṇāṃ tu saṃyamenai va śakyate॥12-271-9॥
[नैष (naiṣa) - not this; दानवता (dānavatā) - by gift; शक्यः (śakyaḥ) - possible; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; नैव (naiva) - not indeed; च (ca) - and; इज्यया (ijyayā) - by sacrifice; सम्प्राप्तुम् (samprāptum) - to be attained; इन्द्रियाणां (indriyāṇāṃ) - of the senses; तु (tu) - but; संयमेनैव (saṃyamenai va) - only by restraint; शक्यते (śakyate) - is possible;]
(Not this by gift is possible, by austerity not indeed and by sacrifice; to be attained of the senses but only by restraint is possible.)
This cannot be attained by giving gifts, nor by austerity, nor by sacrifice; it can be attained only by restraint of the senses.
बाह्ये चाभ्यन्तरे चैव कर्मणा मनसि स्थितः। निर्मलीकुरुते बुद्ध्या सोऽमुत्रानन्त्यमश्नुते ॥१२-२७१-१०॥
bāhye cābhyantare caiva karmaṇā manasi sthitaḥ। nirmalīkurute buddhyā so'mutrānantyamaśnute ॥12-271-10॥

(Situated in both the external and internal by action in the mind, he purifies (himself) by intellect; he attains the endless (eternal) there (in the hereafter).)
He who, established in both the external and internal through action in the mind, purifies himself by intellect, attains the eternal in the hereafter.
यथा हिरण्यकर्ता वै रूप्यमग्नौ विशोधयेत्। बहुशोऽतिप्रयत्नेन महतात्मकृतेन ह ॥१२-२७१-११॥
yathā hiraṇyakartā vai rūpyamagnau viśodhayet। bahuśo'tiprayatnena mahatātmakṛtena ha ॥12-271-11॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; हिरण्यकर्ता (hiraṇyakartā) - goldsmith; वै (vai) - indeed; रूप्यम् (rūpyam) - silver; अग्नौ (agnau) - in fire; विशोधयेत् (viśodhayet) - purifies; बहुशः (bahuśaḥ) - many times; अतिप्रयत्नेन (atiprayatnena) - with great effort; महतात्मकृतेन (mahatātmakṛtena) - by a great act; ह (ha) - indeed;]
(Just as a goldsmith indeed purifies silver in fire, many times, with great effort, by a great act, indeed.)

तद्वज्जातिशतैर्जीवः शुध्यतेऽल्पेन कर्मणा। यत्नेन महता चैवाप्येकजातौ विशुध्यते ॥१२-२७१-१२॥
tadvajjātiśatairjīvaḥ śudhyate'lpena karmaṇā। yatnena mahatā caivāpyekajātau viśudhyate ॥12-271-12॥
[तद्वत् (tadvat) - in that manner; जातिशतैः (jātiśataiḥ) - by hundreds of births; जीवः (jīvaḥ) - the living being; शुध्यते (śudhyate) - is purified; अल्पेन (alpena) - by little; कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; यत्नेन (yatnena) - by effort; महता (mahatā) - by great; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अपि (api) - even; एकजातौ (ekajātau) - in one birth; विशुध्यते (viśudhyate) - is completely purified;]
(In that manner, by hundreds of births, the living being is purified by little action; by great effort indeed even in one birth, is completely purified.)
Just as, over hundreds of births, a living being is gradually purified by small actions, so too, with great effort, one can become completely purified even in a single birth.
लीलयाल्पं यथा गात्रात्प्रमृज्यादात्मनो रजः। बहु यत्नेन महता दोषनिर्हरणं तथा ॥१२-२७१-१३॥
līlayālpaṃ yathā gātrāt pramṛjyād ātmano rajaḥ। bahu yatnena mahatā doṣa-nirharaṇaṃ tathā ॥12-271-13॥
[लीलया (līlayā) - with ease; अल्पं (alpaṃ) - a little; यथा (yathā) - just as; गात्रात् (gātrāt) - from the body; प्रमृज्यात् (pramṛjyāt) - should wipe off; आत्मनः (ātmanaḥ) - of oneself; रजः (rajaḥ) - dust; बहु (bahu) - much; यत्नेन (yatnena) - with effort; महता (mahatā) - great; दोष-निर्हरणं (doṣa-nirharaṇaṃ) - removal of faults; तथा (tathā) - in the same way;]
(With ease, just as one should wipe off a little dust from one's body, in the same way, the removal of faults (requires) much great effort.)
Just as one can easily wipe a little dust from the body, so too, the removal of great faults requires much effort.
यथा चाल्पेन माल्येन वासितं तिलसर्षपम्। न मुञ्चति स्वकं गन्धं तद्वत्सूक्ष्मस्य दर्शनम् ॥१२-२७१-१४॥
yathā cālpena mālyena vāsitaṃ tilasarṣapam। na muñcati svakaṃ gandhaṃ tadvatsūkṣmasya darśanam ॥12-271-14॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; अल्पेन (alpena) - by little; माल्येन (mālyena) - by a garland; वासितं (vāsitaṃ) - perfumed; तिलसर्षपम् (tilasarṣapam) - sesame or mustard seed; न (na) - not; मुञ्चति (muñcati) - releases; स्वकं (svakaṃ) - its own; गन्धं (gandhaṃ) - fragrance; तद्वत् (tadvat) - so also; सूक्ष्मस्य (sūkṣmasya) - of the subtle; दर्शनम् (darśanam) - perception;]
(Just as a sesame or mustard seed, even when perfumed with a little garland, does not release its own fragrance, so also is the perception of the subtle.)

तदेव बहुभिर्माल्यैर्वास्यमानं पुनः पुनः। विमुञ्चति स्वकं गन्धं माल्यगन्धेऽवतिष्ठति ॥१२-२७१-१५॥

(That indeed, being perfumed by many garlands again and again, releases its own fragrance; in the scent of garlands it remains.)
That (object), though repeatedly perfumed by many garlands, continually emits its own fragrance and persists with the scent of the garlands.
एवं जातिशतैर्युक्तो गुणैरेव प्रसङ्गिषु। बुद्ध्या निवर्तते दोषो यत्नेनाभ्यासजेन वै ॥१२-२७१-१६॥
evaṃ jātiśatairyukto guṇaireva prasaṅgiṣu| buddhyā nivartate doṣo yatnenābhyāsajena vai ॥12-271-16॥
[एवं (evaṃ) - thus; जाति-शतैः (jāti-śataiḥ) - by hundreds of births; युक्तः (yuktaḥ) - endowed; गुणैः (guṇaiḥ) - with qualities; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रसङ्गिषु (prasaṅgiṣu) - in attachments; बुद्ध्या (buddhyā) - by intellect; निवर्तते (nivartate) - is turned away; दोषः (doṣaḥ) - fault; यत्नेन (yatnena) - by effort; अभ्यासजेन (abhyāsajena) - arising from practice; वै (vai) - indeed;]
(Thus, endowed with hundreds of births, with qualities indeed in attachments, by intellect the fault is turned away by effort arising from practice indeed.)
Thus, even when one is endowed with hundreds of births and qualities in attachments, the fault is removed by intellect and by effort born of practice.
कर्मणा स्वेन रक्तानि विरक्तानि च दानव। यथा कर्मविशेषांश्च प्राप्नुवन्ति तथा शृणु ॥१२-२७१-१७॥
karmaṇā svena raktāni viraktāni ca dānava। yathā karmaviśeṣāṃśca prāpnuvanti tathā śṛṇu ॥12-271-17॥
[कर्मणा (karmaṇā) - by action; by deed; स्वेन (svena) - by one's own; by his own; रक्तानि (raktāni) - attached; fond; विरक्तानि (viraktāni) - dispassionate; detached; च (ca) - and; दानव (dānava) - O Dānava; O demon; यथा (yathā) - as; just as; कर्मविशेषान् (karmaviśeṣān) - particular actions; special deeds; च (ca) - and; प्राप्नुवन्ति (prāpnuvanti) - they obtain; they attain; तथा (tathā) - so; in that way; शृणु (śṛṇu) - hear; listen;]
(By action, by one's own, attached, detached, and, O Dānava, as, particular actions, and, they obtain, so, hear.)
O Dānava, beings become attached or detached by their own actions. Just as they attain particular results according to their actions, so listen.
यथा च सम्प्रवर्तन्ते यस्मिंस्तिष्ठन्ति वा विभो। तत्तेऽनुपूर्व्या व्याख्यास्ये तदिहैकमनाः शृणु ॥१२-२७१-१८॥
yathā ca sampravartante yasmiṃstiṣṭhanti vā vibho। tatte'nupūrvyā vyākhyāsyē tadihaikamanāḥ śṛṇu ॥12-271-18॥
[यथा (yathā) - as; in what manner; च (ca) - and; सम्प्रवर्तन्ते (sampravartante) - proceed; are set in motion; यस्मिन् (yasmin) - in which; wherein; तिष्ठन्ति (tiṣṭhanti) - stand; remain; वा (vā) - or; विभो (vibho) - O mighty one; तत् (tat) - that; ते (te) - to you; अनुपूर्व्या (anupūrvyā) - in sequence; in order; व्याख्यास्ये (vyākhyāsyē) - I shall explain; तत् (tat) - that; इह (iha) - here; एकमनाः (ekamanāḥ) - with one mind; attentively; शृणु (śṛṇu) - listen; १२-२७१-१८ (12-271-18) - 12-271-18;]

O mighty one, I shall explain to you in sequence how things proceed and in which they stand; therefore, listen here with one-pointed mind.
अनादिनिधनः श्रीमान्हरिर्नारायणः प्रभुः। स वै सृजति भूतानि स्थावराणि चराणि च ॥१२-२७१-१९॥
anādinidhanaḥ śrīmān harir nārāyaṇaḥ prabhuḥ। sa vai sṛjati bhūtāni sthāvarāṇi carāṇi ca ॥12-271-19॥
[अनादिनिधनः (anādinidhanaḥ) - without beginning or end; श्रीमान् (śrīmān) - possessed of fortune; हरिः (hariḥ) - Hari (Vishnu); नारायणः (nārāyaṇaḥ) - Nārāyaṇa; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the Lord; सः (saḥ) - he; वै (vai) - indeed; सृजति (sṛjati) - creates; भूतानि (bhūtāni) - beings; स्थावराणि (sthāvarāṇi) - immovable (beings); चराणि (carāṇi) - movable (beings); च (ca) - and;]
(The Lord Nārāyaṇa, Hari, possessed of fortune, without beginning or end, he indeed creates beings, both immovable and movable.)
The illustrious Lord Nārāyaṇa, Hari, who is without beginning or end, is the one who indeed creates all beings, both immovable and movable.
एष सर्वेषु भूतेषु क्षरश्चाक्षर एव च। एकादशविकारात्मा जगत्पिबति रश्मिभिः ॥१२-२७१-२०॥
eṣa sarveṣu bhūteṣu kṣaraś cākṣara eva ca। ekādaśa-vikārātmā jagat pibati raśmibhiḥ ॥12-271-20॥

(This, in all beings, is both perishable and imperishable indeed; having the nature of eleven modifications, the world drinks with rays.)
This principle, present in all beings, is both perishable and imperishable; possessing the nature of eleven modifications, it pervades the world through its rays.
पादौ तस्य महीं विद्धि मूर्धानं दिवमेव च। बाहवस्तु दिशो दैत्य श्रोत्रमाकाशमेव च ॥१२-२७१-२१॥
pādau tasya mahīṃ viddhi mūrdhānaṃ divam eva ca। bāhavas tu diśo daitya śrotram ākāśam eva ca ॥12-271-21॥

(At the time of dissolution, whose bodies are completely burnt, the creatures always indeed come to Brahmā; the hosts of gods whose essence is activity, all who were formerly the immortals from Brahmaloka, they also (come to Brahmā).)
At the time of cosmic dissolution, all beings whose bodies are consumed, as well as all the gods whose nature is activity, and even those who were once the immortals from Brahmaloka, all of them come to Brahmā.
प्रजाविसर्गं तु सशेषकालं; स्थानानि स्वान्येव सरन्ति जीवाः। निःशेषाणां तत्पदं यान्ति चान्ते; सर्वापदा ये सदृशा मनुष्याः ॥१२-२७१-५२॥

(Who but fallen from the world of perfected beings in order, their path go thus in succession. Living beings in the next (world), having the nature of that power and form, go to their own rule by reversal.)
But those who have fallen from the world of perfected beings, in due order, follow their path accordingly. The living beings, in the next world, assuming forms according to that power, proceed to their own destined state by reversal.

(But he who is situated on this side, who is permanent, changes at the end of a kalpa. That exceedingly strong Lord, the master, lies in the waters. The creator of clear mind moves among those eternal worlds.)
