अहो धर्मिष्ठता तात वृत्रस्यामिततेजसः। यस्य विज्ञानमतुलं विष्णोर्भक्तिश्च तादृशी ॥१२-२७२-१॥
aho dharmiṣṭhatā tāta vṛtrasyāmitatejasaḥ। yasya vijñānam atulaṃ viṣṇor bhaktiś ca tādṛśī ॥12-272-1॥

(Indeed, O dear, the state of being most righteous of Vṛtra of immeasurable brilliance, whose knowledge is incomparable and whose devotion to Viṣṇu is such.)
O dear, how righteous was Vṛtra of immeasurable brilliance! His knowledge was incomparable, and his devotion to Viṣṇu was of the highest kind.
दुर्विज्ञेयमिदं तात विष्णोरमिततेजसः। कथं वा राजशार्दूल पदं तज्ज्ञातवानसौ ॥१२-२७२-२॥
durvijñeyam idaṃ tāta viṣṇor amitatejasaḥ। kathaṃ vā rājaśārdūla padaṃ taj jñātavān asau ॥12-272-2॥

O dear one, this is difficult to comprehend regarding Viṣṇu of immeasurable splendor. O tiger among kings, how did he come to know that state?
भवता कथितं ह्येतच्छ्रद्दधे चाहमच्युत। भूयस्तु मे समुत्पन्ना बुद्धिरव्यक्तदर्शनात् ॥१२-२७२-३॥
bhavatā kathitaṃ hy etac chraddadhe cāham acyuta। bhūyas tu me samutpannā buddhir avyaktadarśanāt ॥12-272-3॥

O Acyuta, what you have spoken, I do indeed believe. Yet, my understanding has again arisen from perceiving the unmanifest.
कथं विनिहतो वृत्रः शक्रेण भरतर्षभ। धर्मिष्ठो विष्णुभक्तश्च तत्त्वज्ञश्च पदान्वये ॥१२-२७२-४॥
kathaṁ vinihato vṛtraḥ śakreṇa bharatarṣabha। dharmiṣṭho viṣṇubhaktaśca tattvajñaśca padānvaye ॥12-272-4॥

एतन्मे संशयं ब्रूहि पृच्छतो भरतर्षभ। वृत्रस्तु राजशार्दूल यथा शक्रेण निर्जितः ॥१२-२७२-५॥

O bull among the Bharatas, tell me this doubt as I ask you. O tiger among kings, how was Vṛtra conquered by Śakra (Indra)?
यथा चैवाभवद्युद्धं तच्चाचक्ष्व पितामह। विस्तरेण महाबाहो परं कौतूहलं हि मे ॥१२-२७२-६॥
yathā caivābhavadyuddhaṃ taccācakṣva pitāmaha। vistareṇa mahābāho paraṃ kautūhalaṃ hi me ॥12-272-6॥

O grandsire, please tell me in detail how the battle happened, for I, O mighty-armed one, have great curiosity about it.

रथेनेन्द्रः प्रयातो वै सार्धं सुरगणैः पुरा। ददर्शाथाग्रतो वृत्रं विष्ठितं पर्वतोपमम् ॥१२-२७२-७॥
rathenendraḥ prayāto vai sārdhaṃ suragaṇaiḥ purā। dadarśāthāgrato vṛtraṃ viṣṭhitaṃ parvatopamam ॥12-272-7॥
[रथेन (rathena) - by the chariot; इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; प्रयातः (prayātaḥ) - departed; वै (vai) - indeed; सार्धं (sārdham) - together with; सुरगणैः (suragaṇaiḥ) - with the groups of gods; पुरा (purā) - formerly; ददर्श (dadarśa) - he saw; अथ (atha) - then; अग्रतः (agrataḥ) - in front; वृत्रं (vṛtram) - Vṛtra; विष्ठितं (viṣṭhitam) - stationed; पर्वत-उपमम् (parvata-upamam) - mountain-like;]
(By the chariot Indra departed indeed together with the groups of gods formerly. Then he saw in front Vṛtra stationed, mountain-like.)
Once, Indra departed in his chariot together with the hosts of gods. Then, in front of him, he saw Vṛtra stationed, resembling a mountain.
योजनानां शतान्यूर्ध्वं पञ्चोच्छ्रितमरिंदम। शतानि विस्तरेणाथ त्रीण्येवाभ्यधिकानि तु ॥१२-२७२-८॥
yojanānāṃ śatāny ūrdhvaṃ pañcocchritam ariṃdama। śatāni vistareṇātha trīṇy evābhyadhikāni tu॥12-272-8॥
[योजनानाम् (yojanānām) - of yojanas; (yojana = a measure of distance); शतानि (śatāni) - hundreds; (of); ऊर्ध्वम् (ūrdhvam) - upwards; पञ्च (pañca) - five; उच्छ्रितम् (ucchritam) - elevated; raised; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies; शतानि (śatāni) - hundreds; (of); विस्तरेण (vistareṇa) - in breadth; अथ (atha) - then; त्रीणि (trīṇi) - three; एव (eva) - indeed; अभ्यधिकानि (abhyadhikāni) - exceeding; तु (tu) - but;]
(Of yojanas, hundreds upwards, five raised, O subduer of enemies; hundreds in breadth then three indeed exceeding but.)
O subduer of enemies, it is five hundred yojanas high; and in breadth, it exceeds by three hundred yojanas.
तत्प्रेक्ष्य तादृशं रूपं त्रैलोक्येनापि दुर्जयम्। वृत्रस्य देवाः सन्त्रस्ता न शान्तिमुपलेभिरे ॥१२-२७२-९॥
tatprekṣya tādṛśaṃ rūpaṃ trailokyenāpi durjayam। vṛtrasya devāḥ santrastā na śāntimupalebhire ॥12-272-9॥
[तत् (tat) - that; प्रेक्ष्य (prekṣya) - having seen; तादृशम् (tādṛśam) - such; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; त्रैलोक्येन (trailokyena) - by the three worlds; अपि (api) - even; दुर्जयम् (durjayam) - difficult to conquer; वृत्रस्य (vṛtrasya) - of Vṛtra; देवाः (devāḥ) - the gods; सन्त्रस्ता (santrastā) - terrified; न (na) - not; शान्तिम् (śāntim) - peace; उपलेभिरे (upalebhire) - obtained;]
(Having seen that such form of Vṛtra, difficult to conquer even by the three worlds, the gods, terrified, did not obtain peace.)
When the gods saw Vṛtra's form, so formidable that even the three worlds could not overcome it, they were seized with terror and found no peace.
शक्रस्य तु तदा राजन्नूरुस्तम्भो व्यजायत। भयाद्वृत्रस्य सहसा दृष्ट्वा तद्रूपमुत्तमम् ॥१२-२७२-१०॥
śakrasya tu tadā rājann ūrustambho vyajāyata। bhayād vṛtrasya sahasā dṛṣṭvā tad rūpam uttamam ॥12-272-10॥
[शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; (Indra); तु (tu) - but; तदा (tadā) - then; राजन् (rājan) - O king; ऊरुस्तम्भः (ūrustambhaḥ) - thigh-pillar; (thigh); व्यजायत (vyajāyata) - manifested; (appeared); भयात् (bhayāt) - from fear; वृत्रस्य (vṛtrasya) - of Vṛtra; सहसा (sahasā) - suddenly; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; तत् (tat) - that; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - excellent; (supreme);]
(But then, O king, Śakra's thigh-pillar appeared, from fear of Vṛtra, suddenly, having seen that excellent form.)
But then, O king, Indra's thigh appeared suddenly out of fear of Vṛtra, upon seeing that supreme form.
ततो नादः समभवद्वादित्राणां च निस्वनः। देवासुराणां सर्वेषां तस्मिन्युद्ध उपस्थिते ॥१२-२७२-११॥
tato nādaḥ samabhavad vāditrāṇāṃ ca nisvanaḥ। devāsurāṇāṃ sarveṣāṃ tasmin yuddha upasthite ॥12-272-11॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; नादः (nādaḥ) - sound; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; वादित्राणाम् (vāditrāṇām) - of musical instruments; च (ca) - and; निस्वनः (nisvanaḥ) - resounding; देव-असुराणाम् (deva-asurāṇām) - of gods and asuras; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; युद्ध (yuddha) - battle; उपस्थिते (upasthite) - when present;]
(Then a sound arose, the resounding of musical instruments, of all the gods and asuras, when that battle was present.)
Then, as the battle commenced, the sound of musical instruments and the resounding cries of all the gods and asuras arose.
अथ वृत्रस्य कौरव्य दृष्ट्वा शक्रमुपस्थितम्। न सम्भ्रमो न भीः काचिदास्था वा समजायत ॥१२-२७२-१२॥
atha vṛtrasya kauravya dṛṣṭvā śakram-upasthitam। na sambhramo na bhīḥ kācid āsthā vā samajāyata ॥12-272-12॥
[अथ (atha) - then; वृत्रस्य (vṛtrasya) - of Vṛtra; कौरव्य (kauravya) - O descendant of Kuru; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; उपस्थितम् (upasthitam) - arrived; न (na) - not; सम्भ्रमः (sambhramaḥ) - confusion; न (na) - not; भीः (bhīḥ) - fear; काचित् (kācid) - any; आस्था (āsthā) - regard; वा (vā) - or; समजायत (samajāyata) - arose;]
(Then, O descendant of Kuru, having seen Indra arrived at Vṛtra, neither confusion nor any fear or regard arose.)
Then, O Kauravya, when Indra arrived before Vṛtra, there was neither confusion, nor any fear, nor any regard that arose.
ततः समभवद्युद्धं त्रैलोक्यस्य भयङ्करम्। शक्रस्य च सुरेन्द्रस्य वृत्रस्य च महात्मनः ॥१२-२७२-१३॥
tataḥ samabhavadyuddhaṃ trailokyasya bhayaṅkaram। śakrasya ca surendrasya vṛtrasya ca mahātmanaḥ ॥12-272-13॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; समभवत् (samabhavat) - arose; युद्धं (yuddham) - battle; त्रैलोक्यस्य (trailokyasya) - of the three worlds; भयङ्करम् (bhayaṅkaram) - terrible; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra; च (ca) - and; सुरेन्द्रस्य (surendrasya) - of the lord of the gods; वृत्रस्य (vṛtrasya) - of Vṛtra; च (ca) - and; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled;]
(Then there arose a terrible battle of the three worlds, of Śakra and the lord of the gods, and of Vṛtra, the great-souled.)
Then a dreadful battle broke out across the three worlds between Śakra, the lord of the gods, and the great-souled Vṛtra.
असिभिः पट्टिशैः शूलैः शक्तितोमरमुद्गरैः। शिलाभिर्विविधाभिश्च कार्मुकैश्च महास्वनैः ॥१२-२७२-१४॥
asibhiḥ paṭṭiśaiḥ śūlaiḥ śaktitomaramudgaraiḥ| śilābhirvividhābhiśca kārmukaiśca mahāsvanaiḥ ॥12-272-14॥
[असिभिः (asibhiḥ) - with swords; पट्टिशैः (paṭṭiśaiḥ) - with spears; शूलैः (śūlaiḥ) - with pikes; शक्ति-तोमर-मुद्गरैः (śakti-tomara-mudgaraiḥ) - with lances, javelins, and maces; शिलाभिः (śilābhiḥ) - with stones; विविधाभिः च (vividhābhiḥ ca) - and with various (other weapons); कार्मुकैः च (kārmukaiḥ ca) - and with bows; महास्वनैः (mahāsvanaiḥ) - with great sounds;]
(With swords, with spears, with pikes, with lances, javelins, and maces, with stones, and with various (other weapons), and with bows, with great sounds.)
They fought with swords, spears, pikes, lances, javelins, maces, stones, various other weapons, and bows, all producing great sounds.
अस्त्रैश्च विविधैर्दिव्यैः पावकोल्काभिरेव च। देवासुरैस्ततः सैन्यैः सर्वमासीत्समाकुलम् ॥१२-२७२-१५॥
astraiś ca vividhair divyaiḥ pāvakolkābhir eva ca। devāsurais tataḥ sainyaiḥ sarvam āsīt samākulam ॥12-272-15॥
[अस्त्रैः (astraiḥ) - by missiles; च (ca) - and; विविधैः (vividhaiḥ) - by various; दिव्यैः (divyaiḥ) - by divine; पावक-उल्काभिः (pāvaka-ulkābhiḥ) - by fire-meteors; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; देव-असुरैः (deva-asuraiḥ) - by gods and asuras; ततः (tataḥ) - then; सैन्यैः (sainyaiḥ) - by armies; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; समाकुलम् (samākulam) - confused;]
(By missiles and by various divine (weapons), by fire-meteors indeed and by gods and asuras then by armies, all was confused.)
The entire field was thrown into confusion by various divine missiles, fire-meteors, and the armies of gods and asuras.
पितामहपुरोगाश्च सर्वे देवगणास्तथा। ऋषयश्च महाभागास्तद्युद्धं द्रष्टुमागमन् ॥१२-२७२-१६॥
pitāmaha-purogāś ca sarve devagaṇās tathā | ṛṣayaś ca mahābhāgās tad yuddhaṃ draṣṭum āgaman ||12-272-16||
[पितामहपुरोगाः (pitāmaha-purogāḥ) - headed by the grandsire; च (ca) - and; सर्वे (sarve) - all; देवगणाः (devagaṇāḥ) - groups of gods; तथा (tathā) - likewise; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; च (ca) - and; महाभागाः (mahābhāgāḥ) - greatly fortunate; तत् (tat) - that; युद्धम् (yuddham) - battle; द्रष्टुम् (draṣṭum) - to see; आगमन् (āgaman) - came;]
(Headed by the grandsire and all the groups of gods likewise, and the greatly fortunate sages came to see that battle.)
All the gods, headed by the grandsire, and the greatly fortunate sages, came together to witness that battle.
विमानाग्र्यैर्महाराज सिद्धाश्च भरतर्षभ। गन्धर्वाश्च विमानाग्र्यैरप्सरोभिः समागमन् ॥१२-२७२-१७॥
vimānāgryairmahārāja siddhāśca bharatarṣabha। gandharvāśca vimānāgryairapsarobhiḥ samāgaman ॥12-272-17॥
[विमानाग्र्यैः (vimānāgryaiḥ) - by excellent aerial cars; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; सिद्धाः (siddhāḥ) - perfected beings; च (ca) - and; भरतर्षभ (bharatarṣabha) - O bull among the Bharatas; गन्धर्वाः (gandharvāḥ) - Gandharvas; च (ca) - and; विमानाग्र्यैः (vimānāgryaiḥ) - by excellent aerial cars; अप्सरोभिः (apsarobhiḥ) - with Apsarases; समागमन् (samāgaman) - came together;]
(By excellent aerial cars, O great king, the Siddhas and, O bull among the Bharatas, the Gandharvas also, by excellent aerial cars, together with Apsarases, came together.)

ततोऽन्तरिक्षमावृत्य वृत्रो धर्मभृतां वरः। अश्मवर्षेण देवेन्द्रं पर्वतात्समवाकिरत् ॥१२-२७२-१८॥
tato'ntarikṣam āvṛtya vṛtro dharmabhṛtāṃ varaḥ। aśmavarṣeṇa devendraṃ parvatāt samavākirat ॥12-272-18॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; अन्तरिक्षम् (antarikṣam) - the sky; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having covered; वृत्रः (vṛtraḥ) - Vṛtra; धर्मभृताम् (dharmabhṛtām) - of the upholders of dharma; वरः (varaḥ) - the best; अश्मवर्षेण (aśmavarṣeṇa) - with a shower of stones; देवेन्द्रम् (devendram) - Indra, lord of the gods; पर्वतात् (parvatāt) - from the mountain; समवाकिरत् (samavākirat) - he completely covered;]
(Then, having covered the sky, Vṛtra, the best of the upholders of dharma, with a shower of stones, completely covered Indra, lord of the gods, from the mountain.)
Then Vṛtra, the foremost among the upholders of dharma, covered the sky and, from the mountain, showered stones upon Indra, lord of the gods.
ततो देवगणाः क्रुद्धाः सर्वतः शस्त्रवृष्टिभिः। अश्मवर्षमपोहन्त वृत्रप्रेरितमाहवे ॥१२-२७२-१९॥
tato devagaṇāḥ kruddhāḥ sarvataḥ śastravṛṣṭibhiḥ। aśmavarṣam apohanta vṛtrapreritam āhave ॥12-272-19॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवगणाः (devagaṇāḥ) - the groups of gods; क्रुद्धाः (kruddhāḥ) - angry; सर्वतः (sarvataḥ) - from all sides; शस्त्रवृष्टिभिः (śastravṛṣṭibhiḥ) - with showers of weapons; अश्मवर्षम् (aśmavarṣam) - the shower of stones; अपोहन्त (apohanta) - drove away; वृत्रप्रेरितम् (vṛtrapreritam) - set in motion by Vṛtra; आहवे (āhave) - in battle;]
(Then the groups of gods, angry, from all sides with showers of weapons, drove away the shower of stones set in motion by Vṛtra in battle.)
Then, enraged, the hosts of gods from all sides repelled the stone shower unleashed by Vṛtra in the battle.
वृत्रश्च कुरुशार्दूल महामायो महाबलः। मोहयामास देवेन्द्रं मायायुद्धेन सर्वतः ॥१२-२७२-२०॥

तस्य वृत्रार्दितस्याथ मोह आसीच्छतक्रतोः। रथन्तरेण तं तत्र वसिष्ठः समबोधयत् ॥१२-२७२-२१॥
tasya vṛtrārditasyātha moha āsīcchatakratoḥ। rathantareṇa taṃ tatra vasiṣṭhaḥ samabodhayat ॥12-272-21॥

(Then the son of Aṅgiras, prosperous, and those supreme sages, having seen the valiant act of Vṛtra, having approached the great lord, said for the purpose of Vṛtra's destruction, with the desire for the welfare of the worlds.)
Then, the prosperous son of Aṅgiras and the supreme sages, having witnessed Vṛtra's valor, approached the great lord and spoke, seeking the destruction of Vṛtra for the welfare of all worlds.

(Then the divine splendor, having become fever, of the lord of the world, entered the very terrible Vṛtra, the foremost of Daityas, at that time.)
Then, the divine energy of the Lord, having assumed the form of fever, entered into the dreadful Vṛtra, the chief among the Daityas, at that moment.
विष्णुश्च भगवान्देवः सर्वलोकाभिपूजितः। ऐन्द्रं समाविशद्वज्रं लोकसंरक्षणे रतः ॥१२-२७२-३१॥

eṣa vṛtro mahāñśakra balena mahatā vṛtaḥ। viśvātmā sarvagaścaiva bahumāyaśca viśrutaḥ ॥12-272-34॥

(This Vṛtra, O Śakra, is enveloped by great strength. The soul of all, all-pervading indeed, possessing much illusion and famous.)

तदेनमसुरश्रेष्ठं त्रैलोक्येनापि दुर्जयम्। जहि त्वं योगमास्थाय मावमंस्थाः सुरेश्वर ॥१२-२७२-३५॥
tadenamasuraśreṣṭhaṃ trailokyenāpi durjayam। jahi tvaṃ yogamāsthāya māvamaṃsthāḥ sureśvara ॥12-272-35॥

(That him, best among Asuras, by the three worlds even difficult to conquer, slay you, yoga having resorted to, do not despise, O lord of the gods.)

अनेन हि तपस्तप्तं बलार्थममराधिप। षष्टिं वर्षसहस्राणि ब्रह्मा चास्मै वरं ददौ ॥१२-२७२-३६॥
anena hi tapas taptaṃ balārtham amarādhipa। ṣaṣṭiṃ varṣasahasrāṇi brahmā cāsmai varaṃ dadau ॥12-272-36॥
[अनेन (anena) - by this; हि (hi) - indeed; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तप्तं (taptaṃ) - was performed; बलार्थम् (balārtham) - for the sake of strength; अमराधिप (amarādhipa) - O lord of the immortals; षष्टिं (ṣaṣṭiṃ) - sixty; वर्षसहस्राणि (varṣasahasrāṇi) - thousand years; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; च (ca) - and; अस्मै (asmai) - to him; वरं (varaṃ) - boon; ददौ (dadau) - gave;]
(By this indeed, austerity was performed for the sake of strength, O lord of the immortals. For sixty thousand years, Brahmā also gave a boon to him.)

महत्त्वं योगिनां चैव महामायत्वमेव च। महाबलत्वं च तथा तेजश्चाग्र्यं सुरेश्वर ॥१२-२७२-३७॥
mahatvaṃ yogināṃ caiva mahāmāyatvameva ca। mahābalatvaṃ ca tathā tejaścāgryaṃ sureśvara ॥12-272-37॥

(Greatness of yogins and indeed the state of great illusion and the state of great strength and likewise splendor and excellence, O lord of the gods.)
O lord of the gods, greatness, supreme illusion, immense strength, splendor, and excellence are attributes of yogins.
एतद्वै मामकं तेजः समाविशति वासव। वृत्रमेनं त्वमप्येवं जहि वज्रेण दानवम् ॥१२-२७२-३८॥
etad vai māmakaṃ tejaḥ samāviśati vāsava। vṛtram enaṃ tvam api evaṃ jahi vajreṇa dānavam ॥12-272-38॥

(This indeed my energy enters, O Vāsava. Vṛtra, this one, you also thus slay with the thunderbolt, the demon.)

(But when the Daitya, the great Asura, was being entered by fever, then from the joy of the gods and sages, a great sound arose.)

tato dundubhayaś caiva śaṅkhāś ca sumahāsvanāḥ। murajā ḍiṇḍimāś caiva prāvādyanta sahasraśaḥ ॥12-272-41॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; दुन्दुभयः (dundubhayaḥ) - kettle-drums; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; शङ्खाः (śaṅkhāḥ) - conch-shells; च (ca) - and; सुमहास्वनाः (sumahāsvanāḥ) - of very great sound; मुरजाः (murajāḥ) - drums; डिण्डिमाः (ḍiṇḍimāḥ) - tabors; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; प्रावाद्यन्त (prāvādyanta) - were sounded; सहस्रशः (sahasraśaḥ) - by thousands;]
(Then kettle-drums and indeed conch-shells and of very great sound, drums, tabors and indeed were sounded by thousands.)
Then thousands of kettle-drums, conch-shells, drums, and tabors of great sound were sounded together.
असुराणां तु सर्वेषां स्मृतिलोपोऽभवन्महान्। प्रज्ञानाशश्च बलवान्क्षणेन समपद्यत ॥१२-२७२-४२॥
asurāṇāṃ tu sarveṣāṃ smṛtilopo'bhavan mahān। prajñānāśaś ca balavān kṣaṇena samapadyata ॥12-272-42॥
[असुराणाम् (asurāṇām) - of the asuras; तु (tu) - but; सर्वेषाम् (sarveṣām) - of all; स्मृति-लोपः (smṛti-lopaḥ) - loss of memory; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; महान् (mahān) - great; प्रज्ञा-नाशः (prajñā-nāśaḥ) - loss of wisdom; च (ca) - and; बलवान् (balavān) - powerful; क्षणेन (kṣaṇena) - in an instant; समपद्यत (samapadyata) - befell;]
(But for all the asuras, a great loss of memory occurred; and a powerful loss of wisdom befell in an instant.)
But for all the asuras, there was a great loss of memory, and a powerful loss of wisdom overtook them instantly.
तमाविष्टमथो ज्ञात्वा ऋषयो देवतास्तथा। स्तुवन्तः शक्रमीशानं तथा प्राचोदयन्नपि ॥१२-२७२-४३॥
tamāviṣṭamatho jñātvā ṛṣayo devatāstathā। stuvantaḥ śakramīśānaṃ tathā prācodayannapi ॥12-272-43॥
[तम् (tam) - him; आविष्टम् (āviṣṭam) - possessed; अथ (atha) - then; उ (u) - indeed; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; देवताः (devatāḥ) - gods; तथा (tathā) - also; स्तुवन्तः (stuvantaḥ) - praising; शक्रम् (śakram) - Indra; ईशानम् (īśānam) - the lord; तथा (tathā) - also; प्राचोदयन् (prācodayan) - they urged; अपि (api) - also;]
(Him possessed then indeed having known, sages and gods also, praising Indra the lord also, they urged also.)
Then, having known him to be possessed, the sages and gods, praising Indra the lord, also urged him.
रथस्थस्य हि शक्रस्य युद्धकाले महात्मनः। ऋषिभिः स्तूयमानस्य रूपमासीत्सुदुर्दृशम् ॥१२-२७२-४४॥
rathasthasya hi śakrasya yuddhakāle mahātmanaḥ। ṛṣibhiḥ stūyamānasya rūpam āsīt sudurdṛśam ॥12-272-44॥
[रथस्थस्य (rathasthasya) - of the one standing on the chariot; हि (hi) - indeed; शक्रस्य (śakrasya) - of Śakra (Indra); युद्धकाले (yuddhakāle) - at the time of battle; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; ऋषिभिः (ṛṣibhiḥ) - by the sages; स्तूयमानस्य (stūyamānasya) - being praised; रूपम् (rūpam) - form; आसीत् (āsīt) - was; सुदुर्दृशम् (sudurdṛśam) - very difficult to behold;]
(Of the one standing on the chariot indeed, of Śakra, at the time of battle, of the great-souled one, by the sages being praised, the form was very difficult to behold.)
