tiṣṭhate me sadā tāta kautūhalam idaṃ hṛdi. tad ahaṃ śrotum icchāmi tvattaḥ kurupitāmaha ॥12-278-1॥

कथं देवर्षिरुशना सदा काव्यो महामतिः। असुराणां प्रियकरः सुराणामप्रिये रतः ॥१२-२७८-२॥

How is it that the divine sage Uśanā, always known as Kāvya and of great intellect, acts in ways pleasing to the Asuras and is engaged in what is disagreeable to the Devas?
वर्धयामास तेजश्च किमर्थममितौजसाम्। नित्यं वैरनिबद्धाश्च दानवाः सुरसत्तमैः ॥१२-२७८-३॥
vardhayāmāsa tejaś ca kimartham amitaujasām। nityaṃ vairanibaddhāś ca dānavāḥ surasattamaiḥ ॥12-278-3॥

He caused the splendor of those with immeasurable energy to increase; for what reason are the Dānavas always bound in enmity with the best of the gods?
कथं चाप्युशना प्राप शुक्रत्वममरद्युतिः। ऋद्धिं च स कथं प्राप्तः सर्वमेतद्ब्रवीहि मे ॥१२-२७८-४॥
kathaṁ cāpy uśanā prāpa śukratvam amaradyutiḥ। ṛddhiṁ ca sa kathaṁ prāptaḥ sarvam etad bravīhi me ॥12-278-4॥

(How and also Uśanā obtained the state of Śukra, the one with the splendor of the immortals; and how he attained prosperity—tell me all this.)
How did Uśanā, the one with the splendor of the immortals, obtain the state of Śukra and attain prosperity? Tell me all this.
न याति च स तेजस्वी मध्येन नभसः कथम्। एतदिच्छामि विज्ञातुं निखिलेन पितामह ॥१२-२७८-५॥
na yāti ca sa tejasvī madhyena nabhasaḥ katham। etadicchāmi vijñātuṃ nikhilena pitāmaha ॥12-278-5॥

O grandsire, I wish to know completely how that radiant one does not go through the middle of the sky.

शृणु राजन्नवहितः सर्वमेतद्यथातथम्। यथामति यथा चैतच्छ्रुतपूर्वं मयानघ ॥१२-२७८-६॥
śṛṇu rājann-avahitaḥ sarvam etad yathā tatham। yathā-mati yathā ca etat śruta-pūrvaṃ mayā anagha ॥12-278-6॥

(Hear, O king, attentively all this as it is; as is my understanding and as I have heard this before, O sinless one.)
O king, listen attentively to all this exactly as it is; I will tell you as I understand and as I have previously heard it, O sinless one.
एष भार्गवदायादो मुनिः सत्यो दृढव्रतः। असुराणां प्रियकरो निमित्ते करुणात्मके ॥१२-२७८-७॥
eṣa bhārgavadāyādo muniḥ satyo dṛḍhavrataḥ। asurāṇāṃ priyakaro nimitte karuṇātmake ॥12-278-7॥
[एष (eṣa) - this; भार्गवदायादः (bhārgavadāyādaḥ) - descendant of Bhṛgu; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; सत्यः (satyaḥ) - truthful; दृढव्रतः (dṛḍhavrataḥ) - firm in vow; असुराणाम् (asurāṇām) - of the Asuras; प्रियकरः (priyakaraḥ) - one who does what is pleasing; निमित्ते (nimitte) - for the sake; करुणात्मके (karuṇātmake) - in the compassionate one;]
(This descendant of Bhṛgu, the sage, truthful, firm in vow, doer of what is pleasing to the Asuras, for the sake of the compassionate one.)
This sage, a descendant of Bhṛgu, steadfast in truth and firm in his vows, performed acts pleasing to the Asuras for the sake of the compassionate one.
इन्द्रोऽथ धनदो राजा यक्षरक्षोधिपः स च। प्रभविष्णुश्च कोशस्य जगतश्च तथा प्रभुः ॥१२-२७८-८॥

[इन्द्रः (indraḥ) - Indra; अथ (atha) - then; धनदः (dhanadaḥ) - Kubera; राजा (rājā) - king; यक्षरक्षोधिपः (yakṣarakṣodhipaḥ) - lord of Yakṣas and Rākṣasas; सः (saḥ) - he; च (ca) - and; प्रभविष्णुः (prabhaviṣṇuḥ) - having power; च (ca) - and; कोशस्य (kośasya) - of the treasury; जगतः (jagataḥ) - of the world; च (ca) - and; तथा (tathā) - also; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - lord;]
(Indra then Kubera king lord of Yakṣas and Rākṣasas he and having power and of the treasury of the world and also lord.)
Indra, then Kubera, the king and lord of the Yakṣas and Rākṣasas, he also, being powerful, is the lord of the treasury and of the world as well.
तस्यात्मानमथाविश्य योगसिद्धो महामुनिः। रुद्ध्वा धनपतिं देवं योगेन हृतवान्वसु ॥१२-२७८-९॥
tasyātmānam athāviśya yogasiddho mahāmuniḥ। ruddhvā dhanapatiṃ devaṃ yogena hṛtavānvasu ॥12-278-9॥
[तस्य (tasya) - of him; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - self; अथ (atha) - then; आविश्य (āviśya) - having entered; योगसिद्धः (yogasiddhaḥ) - perfected in yoga; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage; रुद्ध्वा (ruddhvā) - having restrained; धनपतिम् (dhanapatim) - the lord of wealth; देवम् (devam) - the god; योगेन (yogena) - by yoga; हृतवान् (hṛtavān) - carried away; वसु (vasu) - wealth;]
(Of him, having entered the self, the great sage perfected in yoga, having restrained the lord of wealth, the god, by yoga, carried away the wealth.)
Then, the great sage, accomplished in yoga, having entered his own self, restrained the god, the lord of wealth, by yoga, and carried away the wealth.
हृते धने ततः शर्म न लेभे धनदस्तथा। आपन्नमन्युः संविग्नः सोऽभ्यगात्सुरसत्तमम् ॥१२-२७८-१०॥
hṛte dhane tataḥ śarma na lebhe dhanadas tathā। āpannamanyuḥ saṃvignaḥ so'bhagātsurasattamam ॥12-278-10॥
[हृते (hṛte) - having been taken away; धने (dhane) - wealth; ततः (tataḥ) - thereafter; शर्म (śarma) - happiness; न (na) - not; लेभे (lebhe) - obtained; धनदः (dhanadaḥ) - Kubera (the giver of wealth); तथा (tathā) - thus; आपन्नमन्युः (āpannamanyuḥ) - afflicted with anger; संविग्नः (saṃvignaḥ) - disturbed; सः (saḥ) - he; अभ्यगात् (abhyagāt) - approached; सुरसत्तमम् (surasattamam) - the best among the gods;]
(Having had his wealth taken away, thereafter Kubera did not obtain happiness; thus, afflicted with anger and disturbed, he approached the best among the gods.)
After his wealth was taken, Kubera found no happiness; troubled and angry, he went to the foremost of the gods.
निवेदयामास तदा शिवायामिततेजसे। देवश्रेष्ठाय रुद्राय सौम्याय बहुरूपिणे ॥१२-२७८-११॥
nivedayāmāsa tadā śivāyāmitatejase। devaśreṣṭhāya rudrāya saumyāya bahurūpiṇe ॥12-278-11॥
[निवेदयामास (nivedayāmāsa) - offered; तदा (tadā) - then; शिवाय (śivāya) - to Śiva; अमिततेजसे (amitatejase) - of immeasurable brilliance; देवश्रेष्ठाय (devaśreṣṭhāya) - to the best among gods; रुद्राय (rudrāya) - to Rudra; सौम्याय (saumyāya) - to the gentle one; बहुरूपिणे (bahurūpiṇe) - to the one of many forms;]
(Offered then to Śiva of immeasurable brilliance, to the best among gods, to Rudra, to the gentle one, to the one of many forms.)
Then he offered (it) to Śiva, the one of immeasurable brilliance, the foremost among gods, Rudra, the gentle one, the one of many forms.
कुबेर उवाच॥

योगात्मकेनोशनसा रुद्ध्वा मम हृतं वसु। योगेनात्मगतिं कृत्वा निःसृतश्च महातपाः ॥१२-२७८-१२॥
yogātmakenośanasā ruddhvā mama hṛtaṃ vasu। yogenātmagatiṃ kṛtvā niḥsṛtaśca mahātapāḥ ॥12-278-12॥
[योगात्मकेन (yogātmakena) - by one whose nature is yoga; उशनसा (uśanasā) - by Uśanas (Śukra); रुद्ध्वा (ruddhvā) - having restrained; मम (mama) - my; हृतम् (hṛtam) - stolen; वसु (vasu) - wealth; योगेन (yogena) - by yoga; आत्मगतिम् (ātmagatim) - the movement of the self; कृत्वा (kṛtvā) - having made; निःसृतः (niḥsṛtaḥ) - departed; च (ca) - and; महातपाः (mahātapāḥ) - the great ascetic;]
(By one whose nature is yoga, by Uśanas, having restrained, my stolen wealth; by yoga, having made the movement of the self, the great ascetic departed and.)
Uśanas, whose nature is yoga, having restrained and taken my stolen wealth, departed by means of yoga after making his soul's movement; the great ascetic thus left.
भीष्म उवाच॥

एतच्छ्रुत्वा ततः क्रुद्धो महायोगी महेश्वरः। संरक्तनयनो राजञ्शूलमादाय तस्थिवान् ॥१२-२७८-१३॥
etat-śrutvā tataḥ kruddho mahāyogī maheśvaraḥ। saṁrakta-nayano rājan śūlam ādāya tasthivān ॥12-278-13॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; श्रुत्वा (śrutvā) - having heard; ततः (tataḥ) - then; क्रुद्धः (kruddhaḥ) - angry; महायोगी (mahāyogī) - great yogi; महेश्वरः (maheśvaraḥ) - great lord; संरक्तनयनः (saṁrakta-nayanaḥ) - with bloodshot eyes; राजन् (rājan) - O king; शूलम् (śūlam) - trident; आदाय (ādāya) - having taken; तस्थिवान् (tasthivān) - stood;]
(This having heard, then angry, the great yogi, the great lord, with bloodshot eyes, O king, having taken the trident, stood.)
O king, having heard this, the great yogi, the great lord Maheśvara, became angry, his eyes reddened, and he stood holding his trident.
क्वास्वौ क्वासाविति प्राह गृहीत्वा परमायुधम्। उशना दूरतस्तस्य बभौ ज्ञात्वा चिकीर्षितम् ॥१२-२७८-१४॥
kvāsvau kvāsāvitip rāha gṛhītvā paramāyudham। uśanā dūratastasya babhau jñātvā cikīrṣitam ॥12-278-14॥
[क्व (kva) - where; अस्वौ (asvau) - are they; क्व (kva) - where; आसा (āsā) - is she; इति (iti) - thus; प्राह (prāha) - said; गृहीत्वा (gṛhītvā) - having taken; परमायुधम् (paramāyudham) - supreme weapon; उशना (uśanā) - Uśanā (Śukra); दूरतः (dūrataḥ) - from a distance; तस्य (tasya) - his; बभौ (babhau) - shone; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; चिकीर्षितम् (cikīrṣitam) - intended action;]
(Where are they? Where is she?—thus (he) said, having taken the supreme weapon. Uśanā, from a distance, shone, having known his intended action.)
He said, "Where are they? Where is she?"—having taken up the supreme weapon. Uśanā (Śukra), knowing his intention, shone from afar.
स महायोगिनो बुद्ध्वा तं रोषं वै महात्मनः। गतिमागमनं वेत्ति स्थानं वेत्ति ततः प्रभुः ॥१२-२७८-१५॥
sa mahāyogino buddhvā taṃ roṣaṃ vai mahātmanaḥ। gatim-āgamanaṃ vetti sthānaṃ vetti tataḥ prabhuḥ ॥12-278-15॥
[स (sa) - he; महायोगिनः (mahāyoginaḥ) - of the great yogin; बुद्ध्वा (buddhvā) - having understood; तं (tam) - that; रोषं (roṣam) - anger; वै (vai) - indeed; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one; गतिम् (gatim) - movement; आगमनम् (āgamanam) - approach; वेत्ति (vetti) - knows; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; वेत्ति (vetti) - knows; ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(He, having understood that anger of the great-souled great yogin, indeed, knows the movement and approach, knows the place, then the lord.)
He, the lord, having perceived that anger of the great-souled great yogin, indeed knows the movement and arrival, and knows the place as well.
सञ्चिन्त्योग्रेण तपसा महात्मानं महेश्वरम्। उशना योगसिद्धात्मा शूलाग्रे प्रत्यदृश्यत ॥१२-२७८-१६॥
sañcintyogreṇa tapasā mahātmānaṃ maheśvaram। uśanā yogasiddhātmā śūlāgre pratyadṛśyata ॥12-278-16॥
[सञ्चिन्त्य (sañcintya) - having contemplated; उग्रेण (ugreṇa) - with intense; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; महात्मानम् (mahātmānam) - the great-souled; महेश्वरम् (maheśvaram) - the great lord; उशना (uśanā) - Uśanā (Śukra); योगसिद्धात्मा (yogasiddhātmā) - whose self is perfected in yoga; शूलाग्रे (śūlāgre) - at the tip of the trident; प्रत्यदृश्यत (pratyadṛśyata) - was seen;]
(Having contemplated the great-souled great lord with intense austerity, Uśanā, whose self is perfected in yoga, was seen at the tip of the trident.)
Uśanā, perfected in yoga, beheld the great-souled Lord Maheśvara at the tip of the trident after deep contemplation and austerity.
विज्ञातरूपः स तदा तपःसिद्धेन धन्विना। ज्ञात्वा शूलं च देवेशः पाणिना समनामयत् ॥१२-२७८-१७॥
vijñātarūpaḥ sa tadā tapaḥsiddhena dhanvinā। jñātvā śūlaṃ ca deveśaḥ pāṇinā samanāmayat ॥12-278-17॥
[विज्ञातरूपः (vijñātarūpaḥ) - having a known form; स (sa) - he; तदा (tadā) - then; तपःसिद्धेन (tapaḥsiddhena) - by one perfected in austerity; धन्विना (dhanvinā) - by the bowman; ज्ञात्वा (jñātvā) - having known; शूलं (śūlam) - the spear; च (ca) - and; देवेशः (deveśaḥ) - the lord of the gods; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - with his hand; समनामयत् (samanāmayat) - aligned;]
(Having a known form, he then, by the bowman perfected in austerity, having known the spear, and the lord of the gods with his hand aligned (it).)
Then, having assumed a known form, he, the lord of the gods, with his own hand, aligned the spear, having recognized it, by the bowman perfected in austerity.
आनतेनाथ शूलेन पाणिनामिततेजसा। पिनाकमिति चोवाच शूलमुग्रायुधः प्रभुः ॥१२-२७८-१८॥
ānatena atha śūlena pāṇinā amita-tejasā। pinākam iti ca uvāca śūlam ugrayudhaḥ prabhuḥ ॥12-278-18॥
[आनतेन (ānatena) - by the bowed; by the bent; by the one who is bowed; अथ (atha) - then; शूलेन (śūlena) - with the spear; with the trident; पाणिना (pāṇinā) - by the hand; अमिततेजसा (amita-tejasā) - by the immeasurable brilliance; by the one of boundless energy; पिनाकम् (pinākam) - Pinaka (the bow of Shiva); इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; उवाच (uvāca) - said; शूलम् (śūlam) - the spear; the trident; उग्रायुधः (ugrayudhaḥ) - the one with fierce weapons; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(By the bowed, then, with the spear by the hand of immeasurable brilliance, "Pinaka," thus also said the lord with fierce weapons, the spear.)
Then, the lord with fierce weapons, holding the spear in his hand with immeasurable brilliance, said, "Pinaka."
पाणिमध्यगतं दृष्ट्वा भार्गवं तमुमापतिः। आस्यं विवृत्य ककुदी पाणिं सम्प्राक्षिपच्छनैः ॥१२-२७८-१९॥
pāṇimadhyagataṃ dṛṣṭvā bhārgavaṃ tamumāpatiḥ। āsyaṃ vivṛtya kakudī pāṇiṃ samprākṣipacchanaiḥ ॥12-278-19॥
[पाणि (pāṇi) - hand; मध्य (madhya) - middle; गतं (gataṃ) - gone; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; भार्गवं (bhārgavaṃ) - Bhārgava (descendant of Bhṛgu, i.e., Paraśurāma); तम् (tam) - him; उमापतिः (umāpatiḥ) - Umāpati (Śiva, consort of Umā); आस्यं (āsyaṃ) - mouth; विवृत्य (vivṛtya) - having opened; ककुदी (kakudī) - Kakudī (name of a finger); पाणिं (pāṇiṃ) - hand; सम्प्राक्षिपत् (samprākṣipat) - inserted; शनैः (śanaiḥ) - slowly;]
(Having seen Bhārgava (Paraśurāma) with his hand in the middle, Umāpati (Śiva) opened his mouth and slowly inserted the Kakudī finger and hand.)

स तु प्रविष्ट उशना कोष्ठं माहेश्वरं प्रभुः। व्यचरच्चापि तत्रासौ महात्मा भृगुनन्दनः ॥१२-२७८-२०॥
sa tu praviṣṭa uśanā koṣṭhaṃ māheśvaraṃ prabhuḥ। vyacaraccāpi tatrāsau mahātmā bhṛgunandanaḥ ॥12-278-20॥
[स (sa) - he; तु (tu) - but; प्रविष्ट (praviṣṭa) - entered; उशना (uśanā) - Uśanā (Śukra); कोष्ठं (koṣṭham) - chamber; माहेश्वरं (māheśvaram) - of Maheśvara (Śiva); प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; व्यचरत् (vyacarat) - moved about; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; तत्र (tatra) - there; असौ (asau) - that (person); महात्मा (mahātmā) - great-souled; भृगुनन्दनः (bhṛgunandanaḥ) - descendant of Bhṛgu; ॥१२-२७८-२०॥ (॥12-278-20॥) - ;]
(He but entered Uśanā the chamber of Maheśvara the lord; moved about and also there that great-souled descendant of Bhṛgu.)
But Uśanā (Śukra), the great-souled descendant of Bhṛgu, entered the chamber of Maheśvara (Śiva) and moved about there.

किमर्थं व्यचरद्राजन्नुशना तस्य धीमतः। जठरे देवदेवस्य किं चाकार्षीन्महाद्युतिः ॥१२-२७८-२१॥

(For what reason did Uśanā, O king, move about for that wise one? In the belly of the god of gods, what also did the greatly radiant one do?)
O king, for what reason did Uśanā (Śukra), the wise one, move about? And what did the greatly radiant one do in the belly of the god of gods?

पुरा सोऽन्तर्जलगतः स्थाणुभूतो महाव्रतः। वर्षाणामभवद्राजन्प्रयुतान्यर्बुदानि च ॥१२-२७८-२२॥
purā so'ntarjalagataḥ sthāṇubhūto mahāvrataḥ। varṣāṇāmabhavad rājann prayutānyarbudāni ca ॥12-278-22॥
[पुरा (purā) - formerly; सः (saḥ) - he; अन्तर्जलगतः (antarjalagataḥ) - entered into water; स्थाणुभूतः (sthāṇubhūtaḥ) - became motionless; महाव्रतः (mahāvrataḥ) - great vow-holder; वर्षाणाम् (varṣāṇām) - of years; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; राजन् (rājan) - O king; प्रयुतानि (prayutāni) - tens of millions; अर्बुदानि (arbudāni) - hundreds of millions; च (ca) - and;]
(Formerly, he entered into water, became motionless, a great vow-holder; O king, tens of millions and hundreds of millions of years passed.)
Long ago, he entered the water and stood motionless, observing a great vow; O king, countless millions and hundreds of millions of years passed.
उदतिष्ठत्तपस्तप्त्वा दुश्चरं स महाह्रदात्। ततो देवातिदेवस्तं ब्रह्मा समुपसर्पत ॥१२-२७८-२३॥
udatiṣṭhattapastaptvā duścaraṃ sa mahāhradāt। tato devātidevastaṃ brahmā samupasarpata ॥12-278-23॥
[उदतिष्ठत् (udatiṣṭhat) - rose up; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तप्त्वा (taptvā) - having performed; दुश्चरम् (duścaram) - difficult to practice; सः (saḥ) - he; महाह्रदात् (mahāhradāt) - from the great lake; ततः (tataḥ) - then; देवातिदेवः (devātidevaḥ) - the god above the gods; तम् (tam) - him; ब्रह्मा (brahmā) - Brahmā; समुपसर्पत् (samupasarpata) - approached;]
(He rose up, having performed austerity difficult to practice, from the great lake. Then the god above the gods, Brahmā, approached him.)
He rose from the great lake after performing severe austerities. Then Brahmā, the god above all gods, approached him.
तपोवृद्धिमपृच्छच्च कुशलं चैनमव्ययम्। तपः सुचीर्णमिति च प्रोवाच वृषभध्वजः ॥१२-२७८-२४॥
tapovṛddhim apṛcchac ca kuśalaṃ ca enam avyayam। tapaḥ sucīrṇam iti ca provāca vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ ॥12-278-24॥
[तपः-वृद्धिम् (tapaḥ-vṛddhim) - asceticism-growth; अपृच्छत् (apṛcchat) - asked; च (ca) - and; कुशलम् (kuśalam) - welfare; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - him; अव्ययम् (avyayam) - imperishable; तपः (tapaḥ) - asceticism; सु-चीर्णम् (su-cīrṇam) - well-performed; इति (iti) - thus; च (ca) - and; प्रोवाच (provāca) - said; वृषभध्वजः (vṛṣabhadhvajaḥ) - the Bull-bannered (Śiva);]
(He asked about the growth of asceticism and also (about) his imperishable welfare; and (he) said, "The asceticism is well-performed," thus spoke the Bull-bannered (Śiva).)
He inquired about the progress of asceticism and his imperishable welfare, and said, "Your asceticism is well-performed," thus spoke Śiva, the Bull-bannered one.
तत्संयोगेन वृद्धिं चाप्यपश्यत्स तु शङ्करः। महामतिरचिन्त्यात्मा सत्यधर्मरतः सदा ॥१२-२७८-२५॥
tatsaṃyogena vṛddhiṃ cāpyapaśyatsa tu śaṅkaraḥ। mahāmatiracintyātmā satyadharmarataḥ sadā ॥12-278-25॥
[तत् (tat) - that; संयोगेन (saṃyogena) - by union; वृद्धिं (vṛddhiṃ) - increase; च (ca) - and; अपि (api) - also; अपश्यत् (apaśyat) - he saw; सः (saḥ) - he; तु (tu) - but; शङ्करः (śaṅkaraḥ) - Śaṅkara; महामतिः (mahāmatiḥ) - great-minded; अचिन्त्यात्मा (acintyātmā) - of inconceivable nature; सत्यधर्मरतः (satyadharmarataḥ) - delighting in true dharma; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(That by union increase and also he saw; he but Śaṅkara, great-minded, of inconceivable nature, delighting in true dharma, always.)
But Śaṅkara, who was great-minded, of inconceivable nature, and always delighting in true dharma, saw also the increase by that union.
स तेनाढ्यो महायोगी तपसा च धनेन च। व्यराजत महाराज त्रिषु लोकेषु वीर्यवान् ॥१२-२७८-२६॥
sa tenāḍhyo mahāyogī tapasā ca dhanena ca। vyarājata mahārāja triṣu lokeṣu vīryavān ॥12-278-26॥
[स (sa) - he; तेन (tena) - by him; आढ्यः (āḍhyaḥ) - wealthy; महायोगी (mahāyogī) - great yogi; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; च (ca) - and; धनेन (dhanena) - by wealth; च (ca) - and; विराजत् (vyarājata) - shone; महाराज (mahārāja) - O great king; त्रिषु (triṣu) - in three; लोकेषु (lokeṣu) - in worlds; वीर्यवान् (vīryavān) - powerful;]
(He, by him wealthy, great yogi, by austerity and by wealth, shone, O great king, in the three worlds, powerful.)
O great king, he, being wealthy and a great yogi, shone powerfully in the three worlds by his austerity and wealth.
ततः पिनाकी योगात्मा ध्यानयोगं समाविशत्। उशना तु समुद्विग्नो निलिल्ये जठरे ततः ॥१२-२७८-२७॥
tataḥ pinākī yogātmā dhyānayogaṃ samāviśat। uśanā tu samudvigno nililye jaṭhare tataḥ ॥12-278-27॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; पिनाकी (pinākī) - the wielder of Pināka (Śiva); योगात्मा (yogātmā) - whose essence is yoga; ध्यानयोगं (dhyānayogam) - the yoga of meditation; समाविशत् (samāviśat) - entered; उशना (uśanā) - Uśanā (Śukra); तु (tu) - but; समुद्विग्नः (samudvignaḥ) - agitated; निलिल्ये (nililye) - hid; जठरे (jaṭhare) - in the belly; ततः (tataḥ) - then;]
(Then Pinākī, whose essence is yoga, entered the yoga of meditation. Uśanā, but, agitated, hid in the belly then.)
Then Pinākī (Śiva), whose nature is yoga, entered into meditation. But Uśanā (Śukra), being agitated, hid himself in the belly at that time.
तुष्टाव च महायोगी देवं तत्रस्थ एव च। निःसारं काङ्क्षमाणस्तु तेजसा प्रत्यहन्यत ॥१२-२७८-२८॥
tuṣṭāva ca mahāyogī devaṃ tatrastha eva ca। niḥsāraṃ kāṅkṣamāṇas tu tejasā pratyahanyata ॥12-278-28॥
[तुष्टाव (tuṣṭāva) - praised; (from √tuṣ, to praise, to be pleased); च (ca) - and; महायोगी (mahāyogī) - the great yogi; देवम् (devaṃ) - the god; तत्रस्थ (tatrastha) - situated there; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; निःसारम् (niḥsāram) - without essence; (niḥ = without, sāra = essence); काङ्क्षमाणः (kāṅkṣamāṇaḥ) - desiring; तु (tu) - but; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; प्रत्यहन्यत (pratyahanyata) - was repelled; (from prati-√han, to strike back, to repel);]
(The great yogi praised the god and, being situated there, indeed (praised him). But desiring what was without essence, he was repelled by brilliance.)
The great yogi, standing there, praised the god. Yet, desiring what was without true essence, he was repelled by the brilliance.
उशना तु तदोवाच जठरस्थो महामुनिः। प्रसादं मे कुरुष्वेति पुनः पुनररिंदम ॥१२-२७८-२९॥
uśanā tu tadovāca jaṭharastho mahāmuniḥ। prasādaṃ me kuruṣveti punaḥ punararindama ॥12-278-29॥
[उशना (uśanā) - Uśanā; (name of a sage); तु (tu) - but; however; तदा (tadā) - then; at that time; उवाच (uvāca) - said; spoke; जठरस्थः (jaṭharasthaḥ) - situated in the belly; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - great sage; प्रसादं (prasādam) - favor; grace; मे (me) - to me; my; कुरुष्व (kuruṣva) - do; grant; इति (iti) - thus; so; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; अरिंदम (ariṃdama) - O subduer of enemies;]
(Uśanā but then said, the great sage situated in the belly: 'Grant favor to me,' thus again and again, O subduer of enemies.)
But Uśanā, the great sage who was situated in the belly, then said, 'Grant me your favor,' again and again, O subduer of enemies.
तमुवाच महादेवो गच्छ शिश्नेन मोक्षणम्। इति स्रोतांसि सर्वाणि रुद्ध्वा त्रिदशपुङ्गवः ॥१२-२७८-३०॥
tamuvāca mahādevo gaccha śiśnena mokṣaṇam। iti srotāṃsi sarvāṇi ruddhvā tridaśapuṅgavaḥ ॥12-278-30॥
[तम् (tam) - him; उवाच (uvāca) - said; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - Mahādeva; गच्छ (gaccha) - go; शिश्नेन (śiśnena) - with the penis; मोक्षणम् (mokṣaṇam) - release; इति (iti) - thus; स्रोतांसि (srotāṃsi) - streams; सर्वाणि (sarvāṇi) - all; रुद्ध्वा (ruddhvā) - having obstructed; त्रिदशपुङ्गवः (tridaśapuṅgavaḥ) - the chief of the gods;]
(Mahādeva said to him: Go, release with the penis. Thus, having obstructed all the streams, the chief of the gods (did so).)
Mahādeva said to him, "Go and obtain release with the penis." Thus, having blocked all the streams, the chief of the gods did so.
अपश्यमानः स द्वारं सर्वतःपिहितो मुनिः। पर्यक्रामद्दह्यमान इतश्चेतश्च तेजसा ॥१२-२७८-३१॥
apaśyamānaḥ sa dvāraṃ sarvataḥpihito muniḥ। paryakrāmad dahyamāna itaś cetaś ca tejasā ॥12-278-31॥
[अपश्यमानः (apaśyamānaḥ) - not seeing; सः (saḥ) - he; द्वारम् (dvāram) - door; सर्वतःपिहितः (sarvataḥpihitaḥ) - covered on all sides; मुनिः (muniḥ) - sage; पर्यक्रामत् (paryakrāmat) - moved around; दह्यमानः (dahyamānaḥ) - burning; इतः (itaḥ) - here; च (ca) - and; एतश्च (etaś ca) - there and; तेजसा (tejasā) - by the brilliance;]
(Not seeing, he (the) door covered on all sides, the sage moved around, burning here and there by the brilliance.)
Unable to see the door, which was covered on all sides, the sage moved about, burning here and there by the brilliance.
स विनिष्क्रम्य शिश्नेन शुक्रत्वमभिपेदिवान्। कार्येण तेन नभसो नागच्छत च मध्यतः ॥१२-२७८-३२॥
sa viniṣkramya śiśnena śukratvam abhipedivān। kāryeṇa tena nabhasaḥ nāgacchata ca madhyataḥ ॥12-278-32॥
[स (sa) - he; विनिष्क्रम्य (viniṣkramya) - having gone out; शिश्नेन (śiśnena) - with the penis; शुक्रत्वम् (śukratvam) - the state of semen; (semenhood) अभिपेदिवान् (abhipedivān) - having entered upon; (having attained) कार्येण (kāryeṇa) - by the act; तेन (tena) - by him; नभसः (nabhasaḥ) - from the sky; नागच्छत् (nāgacchat) - did not come; च (ca) - and; मध्यतः (madhyataḥ) - from the middle;]
(He, having gone out, with the penis, having attained the state of semen, by that act, by him, from the sky, did not come and from the middle.)
He went out, and with his penis, having attained the state of semen by that act, he did not come down from the sky, but from the middle.
निष्क्रान्तमथ तं दृष्ट्वा ज्वलन्तमिव तेजसा। भवो रोषसमाविष्टः शूलोद्यतकरः स्थितः ॥१२-२७८-३३॥
niṣkrāntamatha taṃ dṛṣṭvā jvalantamiva tejasā। bhavo roṣasamāviṣṭaḥ śūlodyatakaraḥ sthitaḥ ॥12-278-33॥
[निष्क्रान्तम् (niṣkrāntam) - departed; gone out; अथ (atha) - then; तम् (tam) - him; दृष्ट्वा (dṛṣṭvā) - having seen; ज्वलन्तम् (jvalantam) - blazing; shining; इव (iva) - like; as if; तेजसा (tejasā) - with brilliance; with splendor; भवः (bhavaḥ) - Bhava; Śiva; रोषसमाविष्टः (roṣasamāviṣṭaḥ) - filled with anger; शूलोद्यतकरः (śūlodyatakaraḥ) - with trident-raised hand; स्थितः (sthitaḥ) - stood; standing;]
(Then, having seen him departed, blazing as if with brilliance, Bhava (Śiva), filled with anger, stood with his hand raised with the trident.)

न्यवारयत तं देवी क्रुद्धं पशुपतिं पतिम्। पुत्रत्वमगमद्देव्या वारिते शङ्करे च सः ॥१२-२७८-३४॥
nyavārayata taṃ devī kruddhaṃ paśupatiṃ patim। putratvam-agamad-devyā vārite śaṅkare ca saḥ ॥12-278-34॥
[न्यवारयत (nyavārayata) - restrained; तं (taṃ) - him; देवी (devī) - the goddess; क्रुद्धं (kruddham) - angry; पशुपतिं (paśupatim) - Paśupati; पतिम् (patim) - the lord; पुत्रत्वम् (putratvam) - sonship; अगमत् (agamat) - attained; देव्या (devyā) - by the goddess; वारिते (vārite) - having been restrained; शङ्करे (śaṅkare) - Śaṅkara; च (ca) - and; सः (saḥ) - he;]
(The goddess restrained that angry Paśupati, the lord. He attained sonship by the goddess, having been restrained, and by Śaṅkara.)
The goddess stopped the angry Lord Paśupati. Because the goddess and Śaṅkara restrained him, he became their son.
देव्युवाच॥

[देवी (devī) - goddess; उवाच (uvāca) - said;]

The goddess said.
हिंसनीयस्त्वया नैष मम पुत्रत्वमागतः। न हि देवोदरात्कश्चिन्निःसृतो नाशमर्छति ॥१२-२७८-३५॥
hiṁsanīyastvayā naiṣa mama putratvamāgataḥ। na hi devodarāt kaścin niḥsṛto nāśam arcchati ॥12-278-35॥
[हिंसनीयः (hiṁsanīyaḥ) - to be harmed; त्वया (tvayā) - by you; न (na) - not; एषः (eṣaḥ) - this; मम (mama) - my; पुत्रत्वम् (putratvam) - sonship; आगतः (āgataḥ) - has attained; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; देवोदरात् (devodarāt) - from the belly of a god; कश्चित् (kaścit) - anyone; निःसृतः (niḥsṛtaḥ) - emerged; नाशम् (nāśam) - destruction; अर्च्छति (arcchati) - attains;]
(To be harmed by you, this one has not attained my sonship. Indeed, no one who has emerged from the belly of a god attains destruction.)
He is to be harmed by you; he has not become my son. For, indeed, no one who is born from the belly of a god meets with destruction.
भीष्म उवाच॥

tataḥ prīto'bhavaddevyāḥ prahasaṃścedamabravīt। gacchatveṣa yathākāmamiti rājān punaḥ punaḥ ॥12-278-36॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रीतः (prītaḥ) - pleased; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; देव्याः (devyāḥ) - of the queen; प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; च (ca) - and; इदम् (idam) - this; अब्रवीत् (abravīt) - said; गच्छतु (gacchatu) - let (her) go; एष (eṣa) - she; यथा (yathā) - as; कामम् (kāmam) - desire; इति (iti) - thus; राजन् (rājan) - O king; पुनः (punaḥ) - again; पुनः (punaḥ) - again;]
(Then, pleased, he became (so) at the queen, and smiling, he said this: "Let her go as she desires," O king, again and again.)
Then, being pleased with the queen, he smiled and said: "Let her go as she wishes," O king, again and again.
ततः प्रणम्य वरदं देवं देवीमुमां तथा। उशना प्राप तद्धीमान्गतिमिष्टां महामुनिः ॥१२-२७८-३७॥
tataḥ praṇamya varadaṃ devaṃ devī-mumāṃ tathā। uśanā prāpa tad dhīmān gatim iṣṭāṃ mahāmuniḥ ॥12-278-37॥
[ततः (tataḥ) - then; प्रणम्य (praṇamya) - having bowed; वरदं (varadaṃ) - the bestower of boons; देवं (devaṃ) - the god; देवीम् (devīm) - the goddess; उमाम् (umāṃ) - Umā; तथा (tathā) - also; उशना (uśanā) - Uśanā; प्राप (prāpa) - attained; तत् (tat) - that; धीमान् (dhīmān) - the wise one; गतिम् (gatim) - state; इष्टाम् (iṣṭām) - desired; महामुनिः (mahāmuniḥ) - the great sage;]
(Then, having bowed to the bestower of boons, the god, and also to the goddess Umā, Uśanā, the wise great sage, attained that desired state.)
Then Uśanā, the wise great sage, after bowing to the boon-giving god and to the goddess Umā, attained the desired state.
एतत्ते कथितं तात भार्गवस्य महात्मनः। चरितं भरतश्रेष्ठ यन्मां त्वं परिपृच्छसि ॥१२-२७८-३८॥
etat te kathitaṃ tāta bhārgavasya mahātmanaḥ। caritaṃ bharataśreṣṭha yan māṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi ॥12-278-38॥
[एतत् (etat) - this; ते (te) - to you; कथितं (kathitam) - told; तात (tāta) - O dear one; भार्गवस्य (bhārgavasya) - of Bhārgava; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled; चरितं (caritam) - deed; भरतश्रेष्ठ (bharataśreṣṭha) - O best of the Bharatas; यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - me; त्वं (tvaṃ) - you; परिपृच्छसि (paripṛcchasi) - ask thoroughly;]
(This to you has been told, O dear one, of Bhārgava, of the great-souled, the deed, O best of the Bharatas, which me you ask thoroughly.)
O best of the Bharatas, I have told you, dear one, the deeds of the great-souled Bhārgava, which you asked me about.
