तथैवोत्क्रममाणं तु शृणुष्वावहितो नृप। पद्भ्यामुत्क्रममाणस्य वैष्णवं स्थानमुच्यते ॥१२-३०५-१॥
tathaivotkramamāṇaṃ tu śṛṇuṣvāvahito nṛpa। padbhyām utkramamāṇasya vaiṣṇavaṃ sthānam ucyate ॥12-305-1॥
[तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; उत्क्रममाणं (utkramamāṇam) - departing; (one who is) ascending; तु (tu) - but; शृणुष्व (śṛṇuṣva) - listen; आवहितः (āvahitaḥ) - attentively; नृप (nṛpa) - O king; पद्भ्याम् (padbhyām) - by the two feet; उत्क्रममाणस्य (utkramamāṇasya) - of the one departing; वैष्णवम् (vaiṣṇavam) - of Viṣṇu; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; उच्यते (ucyate) - is said;]
(In the same way, but listen attentively, O king; by the two feet of the one departing, the place of Viṣṇu is said.)
In the same way, O king, listen attentively: it is said that when a person departs by the two feet, that is called the place of Viṣṇu. (12-305-1)
जङ्घाभ्यां तु वसून्देवानाप्नुयादिति नः श्रुतम्। जानुभ्यां च महाभागान्देवान्साध्यानवाप्नुयात् ॥१२-३०५-२॥
jaṅghābhyāṃ tu vasūndevān āpnuyād iti naḥ śrutam। jānubhyāṃ ca mahābhāgān devān sādhyān avāpnuyāt ॥12-305-2॥
[जङ्घाभ्यां (jaṅghābhyām) - by the shanks; तु (tu) - but; वसून् (vasūn) - the Vasus; देवान् (devān) - gods; आप्नुयात् (āpnuyāt) - may attain; इति (iti) - thus; नः (naḥ) - to us; श्रुतम् (śrutam) - has been heard; जानुभ्यां (jānubhyām) - by the knees; च (ca) - and; महाभागान् (mahābhāgān) - the greatly fortunate; देवान् (devān) - gods; साध्यान् (sādhyān) - the Sādhyas; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - may attain;]
(By the shanks but the Vasus gods may attain, thus to us has been heard. By the knees and the greatly fortunate gods, the Sādhyas, may attain.)
It has been heard by us that by using the shanks, one may attain the Vasu gods; and by using the knees, one may attain the greatly fortunate Sādhya gods. (12-305-2)
पायुनोत्क्रममाणस्तु मैत्रं स्थानमवाप्नुयात्। पृथिवीं जघनेनाथ ऊरुभ्यां तु प्रजापतिम् ॥१२-३०५-३॥
pāyunotkramamāṇastu maitraṃ sthānam avāpnuyāt। pṛthivīṃ jaghanenātha ūrubhyāṃ tu prajāpatim ॥12-305-3॥
[पायुनः (pāyuṇaḥ) - from the anus; उत्क्रममाणः (utkramamāṇaḥ) - departing; तु (tu) - but; मैत्रम् (maitram) - of Mitra; स्थानम् (sthānam) - place; अवाप्नुयात् (avāpnuyāt) - he would attain; पृथिवीम् (pṛthivīm) - the earth; जघनेन (jaghanena) - by the buttocks; अथ (atha) - then; ऊरुभ्याम् (ūrubhyām) - by the thighs; तु (tu) - but; प्रजापतिम् (prajāpatim) - Prajāpati;]
(But departing from the anus, he would attain the place of Mitra; the earth by the buttocks, then Prajāpati by the thighs.)
But if one departs from the anus, he attains the place of Mitra; by the buttocks, the earth; and by the thighs, Prajāpati. (12-305-3)
पार्श्वाभ्यां मरुतो देवान्नासाभ्यामिन्दुमेव च। बाहुभ्यामिन्द्रमित्याहुरुरसा रुद्रमेव च ॥१२-३०५-४॥
pārśvābhyāṃ maruto devān nāsābhyām indum eva ca। bāhubhyām indram ity āhur urasā rudram eva ca ॥12-305-4॥
[पार्श्वाभ्यां (pārśvābhyām) - by the two sides; मरुतः (marutaḥ) - the Maruts; देवान् (devān) - the gods; नासाभ्याम् (nāsābhyām) - by the two nostrils; इन्दुम् (indum) - the Moon; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; बाहुभ्याम् (bāhubhyām) - by the two arms; इन्द्रम् (indram) - Indra; इति (iti) - thus; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; उरसा (urasā) - by the chest; रुद्रम् (rudram) - Rudra; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and;]
(By the two sides, the Maruts, the gods; by the two nostrils, the Moon indeed and; by the two arms, Indra, thus they say; by the chest, Rudra indeed and.)
They say that the Maruts, the gods, are represented by the two sides; the Moon by the two nostrils; Indra by the two arms; and Rudra by the chest. (12-305-4)
ग्रीवायास्तमृषिश्रेष्ठं नरमाप्नोत्यनुत्तमम्। विश्वेदेवान्मुखेनाथ दिशः श्रोत्रेण चाप्नुयात् ॥१२-३०५-५॥
grīvāyās tam ṛṣiśreṣṭhaṃ naram āpnoty anuttamam। viśvedevān mukhena atha diśaḥ śrotreṇa ca āpnuyāt ॥12-305-5॥
[ग्रीवायाः (grīvāyāḥ) - of the neck; तम् (tam) - him; ऋषिश्रेष्ठम् (ṛṣiśreṣṭham) - best among sages; नरम् (naram) - man; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; अनुत्तमम् (anuttamam) - unsurpassed; विश्वेदेवान् (viśvedevān) - all the gods; मुखेन (mukhena) - by the mouth; अथ (atha) - then; दिशः (diśaḥ) - directions; श्रोत्रेण (śrotreṇa) - by the ear; च (ca) - and; आप्नुयात् (āpnuyāt) - may attain;]
(Of the neck, him, best among sages, man attains unsurpassed; all the gods by the mouth then directions by the ear and may attain.)
A man who is the best among sages attains the unsurpassed through the neck; by the mouth, he attains all the gods, and by the ear, he may attain the directions. (12-305-5)
घ्राणेन गन्धवहनं नेत्राभ्यां सूर्यमेव च। भ्रूभ्यां चैवाश्विनौ देवौ ललाटेन पितॄनथ ॥१२-३०५-६॥
ghrāṇena gandhavahanaṃ netrābhyāṃ sūryameva ca। bhrūbhyāṃ caivāśvinau devau lalāṭena pitṝnatha ॥12-305-6॥
[घ्राणेन (ghrāṇena) - by the nose; गन्धवहनं (gandhavahanam) - carrying of fragrance; नेत्राभ्यां (netrābhyāṃ) - by the two eyes; सूर्यम् (sūryam) - the Sun; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; भ्रूभ्यां (bhrūbhyāṃ) - by the two eyebrows; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; अश्विनौ (aśvinau) - the two Aśvin gods; देवौ (devau) - the two gods; ललाटेन (lalāṭena) - by the forehead; पितॄन् (pitṝn) - the ancestors; अथ (atha) - then;]
(By the nose, carrying of fragrance; by the two eyes, the Sun indeed and; by the two eyebrows, and indeed the two Aśvin gods; by the forehead, the ancestors then.)
By the nose is the carrying of fragrance; by the two eyes, the Sun; by the two eyebrows, the two Aśvin gods; and by the forehead, the ancestors. (12-305-6)
ब्रह्माणमाप्नोति विभुं मूर्ध्ना देवाग्रजं तथा। एतान्युत्क्रमणस्थानान्युक्तानि मिथिलेश्वर ॥१२-३०५-७॥
brahmāṇam āpnoti vibhuṃ mūrdhnā devāgrajaṃ tathā। etāni utkramaṇa-sthānāni uktāni mithileśvara ॥12-305-7॥
[ब्रह्माणम् (brahmāṇam) - the Absolute; the Supreme Brahman; आप्नोति (āpnoti) - attains; reaches; विभुम् (vibhum) - the all-pervading; the omnipresent; मूर्ध्ना (mūrdhnā) - by the head; with the head; देव-अग्रजम् (deva-agrajam) - the elder of the gods; elder brother of the gods; तथा (tathā) - thus; in the same way; एतानि (etāni) - these; उत्क्रमण-स्थानानि (utkramaṇa-sthānāni) - places of departure; places of passing on; उक्तानि (uktāni) - have been stated; have been said; मिथिलेश्वर (mithileśvara) - O lord of Mithila;]
(The Absolute is attained, the all-pervading, by the head, the elder of the gods, thus. These places of departure have been stated, O lord of Mithila.)
By the head, one attains the Supreme Brahman, the all-pervading, the elder of the gods, in this way. These places of departure have been described, O lord of Mithila. (12-305-7)
अरिष्टानि तु वक्ष्यामि विहितानि मनीषिभिः। संवत्सरवियोगस्य सम्भवेयुः शरीरिणः ॥१२-३०५-८॥
ariṣṭāni tu vakṣyāmi vihitāni manīṣibhiḥ। saṃvatsaraviyogasya sambhaveyuḥ śarīriṇaḥ ॥12-305-8॥
[अरिष्टानि (ariṣṭāni) - inauspicious signs; तु (tu) - but; वक्ष्यामि (vakṣyāmi) - I shall state; विहितानि (vihitāni) - prescribed; मनीषिभिः (manīṣibhiḥ) - by the wise; संवत्सरवियोगस्य (saṃvatsaraviyogasya) - of the separation for a year; सम्भवेयुः (sambhaveyuḥ) - may arise; शरीरिणः (śarīriṇaḥ) - for the embodied (person);]
(But I shall state the inauspicious signs prescribed by the wise, which may arise for the embodied (person) in the event of separation for a year.)
But now I will describe the inauspicious signs, as prescribed by the wise, which may arise for a person when there is a separation lasting a year. (12-305-8)
योऽरुन्धतीं न पश्येत दृष्टपूर्वां कदाचन। तथैव ध्रुवमित्याहुः पूर्णेन्दुं दीपमेव च ॥ खण्डाभासं दक्षिणतस्तेऽपि संवत्सरायुषः ॥१२-३०५-९॥
yo'rundhatīṃ na paśyet dṛṣṭapūrvāṃ kadācana। tathaiva dhruvamityāhuḥ pūrṇenduṃ dīpameva ca ॥ khaṇḍābhāsaṃ dakṣiṇataste'pi saṃvatsarāyuṣaḥ ॥12-305-9॥
[यः (yaḥ) - who; अरुन्धतीम् (arundhatīm) - Arundhatī (star); न (na) - not; पश्येत् (paśyet) - may see; दृष्टपूर्वाम् (dṛṣṭapūrvām) - previously seen; कदाचन (kadācana) - at any time; तथा (tathā) - in that way; एव (eva) - indeed; ध्रुवम् (dhruvam) - Dhruva (Pole Star); इति (iti) - thus; आहुः (āhuḥ) - they say; पूर्णेन्दुम् (pūrṇendum) - full moon; दीपम् (dīpam) - lamp; एव (eva) - indeed; च (ca) - and; खण्डाभासम् (khaṇḍābhāsam) - fragmented appearance; दक्षिणतः (dakṣiṇataḥ) - from the south; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; संवत्सरायुषः (saṃvatsarāyuṣaḥ) - of one whose lifespan is a year;]
(Who Arundhatī not may see previously seen at any time; in that way indeed Dhruva thus they say; full moon lamp indeed and; fragmented appearance from the south they also of one whose lifespan is a year; (12-305-9))
Whoever, having previously seen Arundhatī, cannot see her at any time, likewise, they say the same about Dhruva, the full moon, and even a lamp; if these appear fragmented from the south, it is said to indicate a lifespan of one year. (12-305-9)
परचक्षुषि चात्मानं ये न पश्यन्ति पार्थिव। आत्मच्छायाकृतीभूतं तेऽपि संवत्सरायुषः ॥१२-३०५-१०॥
paracakṣuṣi cātmānaṁ ye na paśyanti pārthiva। ātmacchāyākṛtībhūtaṁ te'pi saṁvatsarāyuṣaḥ ॥12-305-10॥
[परचक्षुषि (paracakṣuṣi) - in another's eye; च (ca) - and; आत्मानं (ātmānaṁ) - self; ये (ye) - who; न (na) - not; पश्यन्ति (paśyanti) - see; पार्थिव (pārthiva) - O king; आत्मच्छायाकृतीभूतं (ātmacchāyākṛtībhūtaṁ) - having become the form of the shadow of the self; ते (te) - they; अपि (api) - also; संवत्सरायुषः (saṁvatsarāyuṣaḥ) - having the lifespan of a year;]
(In another's eye and the self who do not see, O king, having become the form of the shadow of the self, they also are of a year's lifespan.)
O king, those who do not see themselves in the eyes of others, even though they have become like the shadow of their own self, they too have a lifespan of only a year. (12-305-10)
अतिद्युतिरतिप्रज्ञा अप्रज्ञा चाद्युतिस्तथा। प्रकृतेर्विक्रियापत्तिः षण्मासान्मृत्युलक्षणम् ॥१२-३०५-११॥
atidyutiratiprajñā aprajñā cādyutistathā। prakṛtervikriyāpattiḥ ṣaṇmāsānmṛtyulakṣaṇam ॥12-305-11॥
[अतिद्युतिः (atidyutiḥ) - excessive-luster; अतिप्रज्ञा (atiprajñā) - excessive-intelligence; अप्रज्ञा (aprajñā) - lack-of-intelligence; च (ca) - and; अद्युतिः (adyutiḥ) - absence-of-luster; तथा (tathā) - likewise; प्रकृतेः (prakṛteḥ) - of-nature; विक्रियापत्तिः (vikriyāpattiḥ) - attainment-of-change; षण्मासान् (ṣaṇmāsān) - six-months; मृत्युलक्षणम् (mṛtyulakṣaṇam) - sign-of-death;]
(Excessive-luster, excessive-intelligence, lack-of-intelligence and absence-of-luster likewise; attainment-of-change of-nature for six-months is sign-of-death.)
Excessive luster, excessive intelligence, lack of intelligence, and absence of luster likewise; the occurrence of change in one's nature for six months is a sign of death. (12-305-11)
दैवतान्यवजानाति ब्राह्मणैश्च विरुध्यते। कृष्णश्यावच्छविच्छायः षण्मासान्मृत्युलक्षणम् ॥१२-३०५-१२॥
daivatāny avajānāti brāhmaṇaiś ca virudhyate। kṛṣṇaśyāvacchavicchāyaḥ ṣaṇmāsān mṛtyulakṣaṇam ॥12-305-12॥
[दैवतानि (daivatāni) - divine beings; deities; अवजानाति (avajānāti) - despises; disregards; ब्राह्मणैः (brāhmaṇaiḥ) - by Brāhmaṇas; च (ca) - and; विरुध्यते (virudhyate) - opposes; acts against; कृष्णश्यावच्छविच्छायः (kṛṣṇaśyāvacchavicchāyaḥ) - having a dark or blackish body shadow; षण्मासान् (ṣaṇmāsān) - six months; मृत्युलक्षणम् (mṛtyulakṣaṇam) - sign of death;]
(He despises divine beings, and opposes Brāhmaṇas; having a dark or blackish body shadow is a sign of death within six months.)
One who despises the gods and opposes Brāhmaṇas, and whose body casts a dark or blackish shadow, has the sign of death within six months. (12-305-12)
शीर्णनाभि यथा चक्रं छिद्रं सोमं प्रपश्यति। तथैव च सहस्रांशुं सप्तरात्रेण मृत्युभाक् ॥१२-३०५-१३॥
śīrṇanābhi yathā cakraṃ chidraṃ somaṃ prapaśyati। tathaiva ca sahasrāṃśuṃ saptarātreṇa mṛtyubhāk ॥12-305-13॥
[शीर्णनाभि (śīrṇanābhi) - with broken hub; यथा (yathā) - just as; चक्रं (cakraṃ) - wheel; छिद्रं (chidraṃ) - broken; सोमं (somaṃ) - Soma (the moon); प्रपश्यति (prapaśyati) - sees; तथैव (tathaiva) - in the same way; च (ca) - and; सहस्रांशुं (sahasrāṃśuṃ) - the thousand-rayed (the sun); सप्तरात्रेण (saptarātreṇa) - in seven nights; मृत्युभाक् (mṛtyubhāk) - one who is subject to death;]
(With broken hub just as a wheel broken Soma sees; in the same way and the thousand-rayed in seven nights one who is subject to death.)
Just as, when the hub is broken, a wheel sees the broken Soma, so too, in seven nights, one who is subject to death sees the thousand-rayed (the sun). (12-305-13)
शवगन्धमुपाघ्राति सुरभिं प्राप्य यो नरः। देवतायतनस्थस्तु षड्रात्रेण स मृत्युभाक् ॥१२-३०५-१४॥
śavagandham-upāghrāti surabhiṃ prāpya yo naraḥ। devatāyatana-sthas-tu ṣaḍrātreṇa sa mṛtyubhāk ॥12-305-14॥
[शवगन्धम् (śavagandham) - corpse-odor; उपाघ्राति (upāghrāti) - smells; सुरभिम् (surabhim) - fragrant; प्राप्य (prāpya) - having obtained; यः (yaḥ) - who; नरः (naraḥ) - man; देवतायतनस्थः (devatāyatana-sthaḥ) - residing in a temple; तु (tu) - but; षड्रात्रेण (ṣaḍrātreṇa) - within six nights; सः (saḥ) - he; मृत्युभाक् (mṛtyubhāk) - subject to death;]
(Whoever, having obtained a fragrant smell, smells corpse-odor, a man residing in a temple, but within six nights, he becomes subject to death. (12-305-14))
If a man residing in a temple, after having obtained a fragrant scent, smells corpse-odor, then within six nights he becomes subject to death. (12-305-14)
कर्णनासावनमनं दन्तदृष्टिविरागिता। सञ्ज्ञालोपो निरूष्मत्वं सद्योमृत्युनिदर्शनम् ॥१२-३०५-१५॥
karṇanāsāvanamanaṃ dantadṛṣṭivirāgitā। sañjñālopo nirūṣmatvaṃ sadyomṛtyunidarśanam ॥12-305-15॥
[कर्ण (karṇa) - ear; नासा (nāsā) - nose; अवनमनं (avanamanaṃ) - bending down; दन्त (danta) - teeth; दृष्टि (dṛṣṭi) - sight; विरागिता (virāgitā) - loss of color; सञ्ज्ञा (sañjñā) - consciousness; लोपः (lopaḥ) - loss; निरूष्मत्वं (nirūṣmatvaṃ) - absence of warmth; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; मृत्यु (mṛtyu) - death; निदर्शनम् (nidarśanam) - indication;]
(Ear nose bending down, teeth sight loss of color. Consciousness loss, absence of warmth, immediate death indication (12-305-15))
The bending down of the ears and nose, loss of color in the teeth and eyes, loss of consciousness, absence of warmth, and immediate death are indications (12-305-15).
अकस्माच्च स्रवेद्यस्य वाममक्षि नराधिप। मूर्धतश्चोत्पतेद्धूमः सद्योमृत्युनिदर्शनम् ॥१२-३०५-१६॥
akasmāc ca sraved yasya vāmam akṣi narādhipa। mūrdhataś cotpatet dhūmaḥ sadyo-mṛtyu-nidarśanam ॥12-305-16॥
[अकस्मात् (akasmāt) - suddenly; without cause; च (ca) - and; स्रवेत् (sravet) - flows; oozes; यस्य (yasya) - whose; वामम् (vāmam) - left; अक्षि (akṣi) - eye; नराधिप (narādhipa) - O king; lord of men; मूर्धतः (mūrdhataḥ) - from the head; च (ca) - and; उत्पतेत् (utpatet) - arises; springs up; धूमः (dhūmaḥ) - smoke; सद्यः (sadyaḥ) - immediately; at once; मृत्यु (mṛtyu) - death; निदर्शनम् (nidarśanam) - sign; indication;]
(O king, whose left eye suddenly oozes and from whose head smoke arises, this is an immediate sign of death.)
O king, if a person's left eye suddenly begins to ooze and smoke arises from their head, it is an immediate sign of impending death. (12-305-16)
एतावन्ति त्वरिष्टानि विदित्वा मानवोऽऽत्मवान्। निशि चाहनि चात्मानं योजयेत्परमात्मनि ॥१२-३०५-१७॥
etāvanti tvariṣṭāni viditvā mānavo''tmavān। niśi ca ahani ca ātmānam yojayet paramātmani ॥12-305-17॥
[एतावन्ति (etāvanti) - these many; त्वरिष्टानि (tvariṣṭāni) - quick actions; विदित्वा (viditvā) - having known; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - human; आत्मवान् (ātmavān) - self-possessed; निशि (niśi) - at night; च (ca) - and; अहनि (ahani) - in the day; च (ca) - and; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; योजयेत् (yojayet) - should unite; परमात्मनि (paramātmani) - in the Supreme Self;]
(Having known these many quick actions, the self-possessed human should unite the self in the Supreme Self at night and in the day.)
After understanding these many swift actions, a self-possessed person should unite his self with the Supreme Self both at night and during the day. (12-305-17)
प्रतीक्षमाणस्तत्कालं यत्कालं प्रति तद्भवेत्। अथास्य नेष्टं मरणं स्थातुमिच्छेदिमां क्रियाम् ॥१२-३०५-१८॥
pratīkṣamāṇas tatkālaṃ yatkālaṃ prati tad bhavet। athāsya neṣṭaṃ maraṇaṃ sthātum icched imāṃ kriyām ॥12-305-18॥
[प्रतीक्षमाणः (pratīkṣamāṇaḥ) - waiting; तत् (tat) - that; कालं (kālam) - time; यत् (yat) - which; कालं (kālam) - time; प्रति (prati) - towards; तत् (tat) - that; भवेत् (bhavet) - may be; अथ (atha) - then; अस्य (asya) - his; नेष्टं (neṣṭam) - not desired; मरणं (maraṇam) - death; स्थातुम् (sthātum) - to remain; इच्छेत् (icchet) - should wish; इमां (imām) - this; क्रियाम् (kriyām) - act;]
(Waiting for that time, for the time when that may be; then, if he does not desire death, he should wish to remain in this act.)
He should wait for the time when that event may occur; then, if he does not desire death, he should wish to remain engaged in this act. (12-305-18)
सर्वगन्धान्रसांश्चैव धारयेत समाहितः। तथा हि मृत्युं जयति तत्परेणान्तरात्मना ॥१२-३०५-१९॥
sarvagandhān rasāṁś caiva dhārayet samāhitaḥ। tathā hi mṛtyuṁ jayati tatpareṇāntarātmanā ॥12-305-19॥
[सर्वगन्धान् (sarvagandhān) - all fragrances; रसान् (rasān) - all tastes; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; धारयेत् (dhārayet) - should restrain; समाहितः (samāhitaḥ) - concentrated; तथा (tathā) - thus; हि (hi) - indeed; मृत्युम् (mṛtyum) - death; जयति (jayati) - conquers; तत्परेण (tatpareṇa) - by that supreme; अन्तरात्मना (antarātmanā) - by the inner self;]
(All fragrances, all tastes and indeed should restrain, concentrated; thus indeed death conquers by that supreme by the inner self.)
A concentrated person should restrain all fragrances and all tastes; thus, by that supreme inner self, he indeed conquers death. (12-305-19)
ससाङ्ख्यधारणं चैव विदित्वा मनुजर्षभ। जयेच्च मृत्युं योगेन तत्परेणान्तरात्मना ॥१२-३०५-२०॥
sasāṅkhyadhāraṇaṃ caiva viditvā manujaṛṣabha. jayecca mṛtyuṃ yogena tatpareṇāntarātmanā ॥12-305-20॥

(With Sāṅkhya and Dhāraṇā indeed having known, O best of men, and may conquer death by Yoga, by that which is supreme, by the inner self.)
O best of men, having understood Sāṅkhya and Dhāraṇā, one should conquer death through Yoga, by the supreme inner self. (12-305-20)
गच्छेत्प्राप्याक्षयं कृत्स्नमजन्म शिवमव्ययम्। शाश्वतं स्थानमचलं दुष्प्रापमकृतात्मभिः ॥१२-३०५-२१॥
gacchet prāpya akṣayam kṛtsnam ajanma śivam avyayam। śāśvatam sthānam acalam duṣprāpam akṛtātmabhiḥ ॥12-305-21॥
