कथं व्यासस्य धर्मात्मा शुको जज्ञे महातपाः। सिद्धिं च परमां प्राप्तस्तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१२-३१०-१॥
kathaṁ vyāsasya dharmātmā śuko jajñe mahātapāḥ। siddhiṁ ca paramāṁ prāptas tan me brūhi pitāmaha ॥12-310-1॥

O grandsire, tell me how Śuka, the righteous-souled son of Vyāsa, who was a great ascetic, was born and attained the highest perfection. (12-310-1)
कस्यां चोत्पादयामास शुकं व्यासस्तपोधनः। न ह्यस्य जननीं विद्म जन्म चाग्र्यं महात्मनः ॥१२-३१०-२॥
kasyāṁ cotpādayāmāsa śukaṁ vyāsastapodhanaḥ। na hyasya jananīṁ vidma janma cāgryaṁ mahātmanaḥ ॥12-310-2॥
[कस्यां (kasyām) - in whom (woman); च (ca) - and; उत्पादयामास (utpādayāmāsa) - produced; caused to be born; शुकं (śukam) - Śuka (name); व्यासः (vyāsaḥ) - Vyāsa (sage); तपोधनः (tapodhanaḥ) - rich in austerity; ascetic; न (na) - not; हि (hi) - indeed; अस्य (asya) - his; जननीं (jananīm) - mother; विद्म (vidma) - we know; जन्म (janma) - birth; च (ca) - and; आग्र्यं (āgryaṁ) - excellent; foremost; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one;]
(In whom and produced Śuka Vyāsa ascetic; not indeed his mother we know, birth and excellent of the great-souled one.)
We do not know in which woman the ascetic Vyāsa produced Śuka, nor do we know the mother or the excellent birth of that great-souled one. (12-310-2)
कथं च बालस्य सतः सूक्ष्मज्ञाने गता मतिः। यथा नान्यस्य लोकेऽस्मिन्द्वितीयस्येह कस्यचित् ॥१२-३१०-३॥
kathaṁ ca bālasya sataḥ sūkṣmajñāne gatā matiḥ। yathā nānyasya loke'smindvitīyasyeha kasyacit ॥12-310-3॥
[कथं (kathaṁ) - how; च (ca) - and; बालस्य (bālasya) - of the child; सतः (sataḥ) - of the existent; सूक्ष्मज्ञाने (sūkṣmajñāne) - in subtle knowledge; गता (gatā) - gone; मतिः (matiḥ) - mind; यथा (yathā) - as; न (na) - not; अन्यस्य (anyasya) - of another; लोके (loke) - in the world; अस्मिन् (asmin) - in this; द्वितीयस्य (dvitīyasya) - of a second; इह (iha) - here; कस्यचित् (kasyacit) - of anyone;]
(How and of the child of the existent in subtle knowledge gone mind; as not of another in the world in this of a second here of anyone.)
How did the mind of the child, who exists, go into subtle knowledge? As in this world, there is not anyone else here who is a second. (12-310-3)
एतदिच्छाम्यहं श्रोतुं विस्तरेण महाद्युते। न हि मे तृप्तिरस्तीह शृण्वतोऽमृतमुत्तमम् ॥१२-३१०-४॥
etadicchāmyahaṃ śrotuṃ vistareṇa mahādyute। na hi me tṛptirastīha śṛṇvato'mṛtamuttamam ॥12-310-4॥

(This I desire I to hear in detail, O greatly radiant one; not indeed to me satisfaction is here, of (me) hearing nectar supreme.)
O greatly radiant one, I wish to hear this in detail; for I do not have satisfaction here, listening to the supreme nectar. (12-310-4)
माहात्म्यमात्मयोगं च विज्ञानं च शुकस्य ह। यथावदानुपूर्व्येण तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह ॥१२-३१०-५॥
māhātmyam-ātmayogaṃ ca vijñānaṃ ca śukasya ha। yathāvad-anupūrveṇa tan me brūhi pitāmaha ॥12-310-5॥

O grandsire, tell me in proper order the greatness, the union with the self, and the special knowledge of Śuka, as it truly is. (12-310-5)

न हायनैर्न पलितैर्न वित्तेन न बन्धुभिः। ऋषयश्चक्रिरे धर्मं योऽनूचानः स नो महान् ॥१२-३१०-६॥
na hāyanairna palitairna vittena na bandhubhiḥ। ṛṣayaścakrire dharmaṃ yo'nūcānaḥ sa no mahān ॥12-310-6॥
[न (na) - not; हायनैः (hāyanaiḥ) - by years; न (na) - not; पलितैः (palitaiḥ) - by grey hairs; न (na) - not; वित्तेन (vittena) - by wealth; न (na) - not; बन्धुभिः (bandhubhiḥ) - by relatives; ऋषयः (ṛṣayaḥ) - sages; चक्रिरे (cakrire) - have established; धर्मं (dharmaṃ) - dharma; यः (yaḥ) - who; अनूचानः (anūcānaḥ) - well-learned; स (sa) - he; नः (naḥ) - for us; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(Not by years, not by grey hairs, not by wealth, not by relatives; sages have established dharma—he who is well-learned, he is great for us.)
It is not by age, grey hair, wealth, or relatives that one is considered great; the sages have established that he who is well-learned in dharma is truly great for us. (12-310-6)
तपोमूलमिदं सर्वं यन्मां पृच्छसि पाण्डव। तदिन्द्रियाणि संयम्य तपो भवति नान्यथा ॥१२-३१०-७॥
tapomūlam idaṃ sarvaṃ yan māṃ pṛcchasi pāṇḍava। tad indriyāṇi saṃyamya tapo bhavati nānyathā ॥12-310-7॥
[तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; मूलम् (mūlam) - root; इदं (idaṃ) - this; सर्वम् (sarvam) - all; यत् (yat) - which; माम् (mām) - me; पृच्छसि (pṛcchasi) - you ask; पाण्डव (pāṇḍava) - O Pāṇḍava; तत् (tat) - that; इन्द्रियाणि (indriyāṇi) - senses; संयम्य (saṃyamya) - having restrained; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; भवति (bhavati) - becomes; न (na) - not; अन्यथा (anyathā) - otherwise;]
(Austerity is the root of all this which you ask me, O Pāṇḍava; that, having restrained the senses, austerity becomes, not otherwise. (12-310-7))
O Pāṇḍava, all that you ask me has austerity as its root; by restraining the senses, austerity is accomplished—never otherwise. (12-310-7)
इन्द्रियाणां प्रसङ्गेन दोषमृच्छत्यसंशयम्। संनियम्य तु तान्येव सिद्धिं प्राप्नोति मानवः ॥१२-३१०-८॥
indriyāṇāṃ prasaṅgena doṣam ṛcchaty asaṃśayam। saṃniyamya tu tān eva siddhiṃ prāpnoti mānavaḥ ॥12-310-8॥
[इन्द्रियाणां (indriyāṇām) - of the senses; प्रसङ्गेन (prasaṅgena) - by attachment; दोषम् (doṣam) - fault; ऋच्छति (ṛcchati) - attains; असंशयम् (asaṃśayam) - without doubt; संनियम्य (saṃniyamya) - having restrained; तु (tu) - but; तान् (tān) - them; एव (eva) - indeed; सिद्धिम् (siddhim) - success; प्राप्नोति (prāpnoti) - attains; मानवः (mānavaḥ) - man;]
(By attachment to the senses, one attains fault without doubt; but having restrained them indeed, a man attains success.)
By attachment to the senses, one certainly incurs faults; but by restraining them, a person attains success. (12-310-8)
अश्वमेधसहस्रस्य वाजपेयशतस्य च। योगस्य कलया तात न तुल्यं विद्यते फलम् ॥१२-३१०-९॥
aśvamedhasahasrasya vājapeyaśatasya ca। yogasya kalayā tāta na tulyaṃ vidyate phalam ॥12-310-9॥
[अश्वमेधसहस्रस्य (aśvamedhasahasrasya) - of a thousand horse-sacrifices; वाजपेयशतस्य (vājapeyaśatasya) - of a hundred Vājapeya sacrifices; च (ca) - and; योगस्य (yogasya) - of yoga; कलया (kalayā) - by a fraction; तात (tāta) - O dear one; न (na) - not; तुल्यं (tulyaṃ) - equal; विद्यते (vidyate) - exists; फलम् (phalam) - fruit;]
(Of a thousand horse-sacrifices, of a hundred Vājapeya sacrifices, and, by a fraction of yoga, O dear one, not equal fruit exists.)
O dear one, the fruit of a thousand horse-sacrifices and a hundred Vājapeya sacrifices is not equal to even a fraction of yoga. (12-310-9)
अत्र ते वर्तयिष्यामि जन्मयोगफलं यथा। शुकस्याग्र्यां गतिं चैव दुर्विदामकृतात्मभिः ॥१२-३१०-१०॥
atra te vartayiṣyāmi janmayogaphalaṃ yathā। śukasyāgryāṃ gatiṃ caiva durvidāmakṛtātmabhiḥ ॥12-310-10॥
[अत्र (atra) - here; ते (te) - to you; वर्तयिष्यामि (vartayiṣyāmi) - I shall relate; जन्म (janma) - birth; योग (yoga) - union; फलं (phalaṃ) - fruit; यथा (yathā) - as; शुकस्य (śukasya) - of Śuka; आग्र्यां (āgryāṃ) - supreme; गतिं (gatiṃ) - state; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; दुर्विदाम् (durvidām) - by those difficult to know; अकृतात्मभिः (akṛtātmabhiḥ) - by those whose selves are unpurified;]
(Here to you I shall relate the fruit of the union of birth as (it is), and indeed the supreme state of Śuka, by those difficult to know, by those whose selves are unpurified. (12-310-10))

मेरुशृङ्गे किल पुरा कर्णिकारवनायुते। विजहार महादेवो भीमैर्भूतगणैर्वृतः ॥१२-३१०-११॥
meruśṛṅge kila purā karṇikāravanāyute। vijahāra mahādevo bhīmairbhūtaganairvṛtaḥ ॥12-310-11॥
[मेरुशृङ्गे (meruśṛṅge) - on the peak of Meru; किल (kila) - indeed; पुरा (purā) - formerly; कर्णिकारवनायुते (karṇikāravanāyute) - endowed with a forest of karṇikāra trees; विजहार (vijahāra) - wandered; महादेवः (mahādevaḥ) - the great god; भीमैः (bhīmaiḥ) - with terrible; भूतगणैः (bhūtaganaiḥ) - with hosts of spirits; वृतः (vṛtaḥ) - surrounded;]
(On the peak of Meru, indeed, formerly, endowed with a forest of karṇikāra trees, wandered the great god, with terrible hosts of spirits, surrounded.)
Long ago, on the summit of Meru, which was covered with a forest of karṇikāra trees, the great god Mahadeva wandered, surrounded by fearsome hosts of spirits. (12-310-11)
शैलराजसुता चैव देवी तत्राभवत्पुरा। तत्र दिव्यं तपस्तेपे कृष्णद्वैपायनः प्रभुः ॥१२-३१०-१२॥
śailarājasutā caiva devī tatrābhavat purā। tatra divyaṃ tapas tepe kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ prabhuḥ ॥12-310-12॥
[शैलराजसुता (śailarājasutā) - daughter of the king of mountains; च (ca) - and; एव (eva) - indeed; देवी (devī) - goddess; तत्र (tatra) - there; अभवत् (abhavat) - became; पुरा (purā) - formerly; तत्र (tatra) - there; दिव्यम् (divyam) - divine; तपः (tapas) - austerity; तेपे (tepe) - performed; कृष्णद्वैपायनः (kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ) - Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord;]
(daughter of the king of mountains and indeed goddess there became formerly. There divine austerity performed Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana the lord.)
Formerly, the goddess, daughter of the king of mountains, became present there. There, the lord Kṛṣṇadvaipāyana performed divine austerity. (12-310-12)
योगेनात्मानमाविश्य योगधर्मपरायणः। धारयन्स तपस्तेपे पुत्रार्थं कुरुसत्तम ॥१२-३१०-१३॥
yogenātmānam āviśya yogadharmaparāyaṇaḥ। dhārayan tapastepe putrārthaṃ kurusattama ॥12-310-13॥
[योगेन (yogena) - by yoga; आत्मानम् (ātmānam) - the self; आविश्य (āviśya) - having entered; योगधर्मपरायणः (yogadharmaparāyaṇaḥ) - devoted to the duty of yoga; धारयन् (dhārayan) - sustaining; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; तेपे (tepe) - practiced; पुत्रार्थम् (putrārtham) - for the sake of a son; कुरुसत्तम (kurusattama) - O best of the Kurus;]
(By yoga, having entered the self, devoted to the duty of yoga, sustaining austerity, he practiced for the sake of a son, O best of the Kurus.)

अग्नेर्भूमेरपां वायोरन्तरिक्षस्य चाभिभो। वीर्येण संमितः पुत्रो मम भूयादिति स्म ह ॥१२-३१०-१४॥
agnerbhūmerapāṃ vāyorantarikṣasya cābhibho। vīryeṇa saṃmitaḥ putro mama bhūyāditi sma ha ॥12-310-14॥
[अग्नेः (agneḥ) - of Agni; भूमेः (bhūmeḥ) - of earth; अपां (apāṃ) - of waters; वायोः (vāyoḥ) - of Vāyu; अन्तरिक्षस्य (antarikṣasya) - of the atmosphere; च (ca) - and; अभिभो (abhibho) - O mighty one; वीर्येण (vīryeṇa) - by strength; संमितः (saṃmitaḥ) - measured; पुत्रः (putraḥ) - son; मम (mama) - my; भूयात् (bhūyāt) - may become; इति (iti) - thus; स्म (sma) - indeed; ह (ha) - verily;]
(Of Agni, of earth, of waters, of Vāyu, of the atmosphere, and O mighty one, by strength measured, son my may become thus indeed verily.)
May my son, measured by the strength of Agni, earth, waters, Vāyu, and the atmosphere, O mighty one, indeed become so. (12-310-14)
सङ्कल्पेनाथ सोऽनेन दुष्प्रापेणाकृतात्मभिः। वरयामास देवेशमास्थितस्तप उत्तमम् ॥१२-३१०-१५॥
saṅkalpenātha so'nena duṣprāpeṇākṛtātmabhiḥ। varayāmāsa deveśamāsthitas tapa uttamam ॥12-310-15॥
[सङ्कल्पेन (saṅkalpena) - by resolve; अथ (atha) - then; सः (saḥ) - he; अनेन (anena) - by this; दुष्प्रापेण (duṣprāpeṇa) - difficult to attain; अकृतात्मभिः (akṛtātmabhiḥ) - by those whose selves are not mastered; वरयामास (varayāmāsa) - chose; देवेशम् (deveśam) - the lord of the gods; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having undertaken; तपः (tapaḥ) - austerity; उत्तमम् (uttamam) - supreme;]
(By resolve, then, he, by this, difficult to attain by those whose selves are not mastered, chose the lord of the gods, having undertaken supreme austerity.)

अतिष्ठन्मारुताहारः शतं किल समाः प्रभुः। आराधयन्महादेवं बहुरूपमुमापतिम् ॥१२-३१०-१६॥
atiṣṭhan mārutāhāraḥ śataṃ kila samāḥ prabhuḥ। ārādhayan mahādevaṃ bahurūpam umāpatim ॥12-310-16॥
[अतिष्ठत् (atiṣṭhat) - remained; मारुताहारः (mārutāhāraḥ) - subsisting on air; शतम् (śatam) - hundred; किल (kila) - indeed; समाः (samāḥ) - years; प्रभुः (prabhuḥ) - the lord; आराधयन् (ārādhayan) - worshipping; महादेवं (mahādevaṃ) - Mahadeva; बहुरूपम् (bahurūpam) - of many forms; उमापतिम् (umāpatim) - the husband of Uma;]
(The lord, subsisting on air, remained indeed for a hundred years, worshipping Mahadeva, the many-formed, the husband of Uma.)

तत्र ब्रह्मर्षयश्चैव सर्वे देवर्षयस्तथा। लोकपालाश्च लोकेशं साध्याश्च वसुभिः सह ॥१२-३१०-१७॥
tatra brahmarṣayaś caiva sarve devarṣayas tathā। lokapālāś ca lokeśaṃ sādhyāś ca vasubhiḥ saha ॥12-310-17॥

आदित्याश्चैव रुद्राश्च दिवाकरनिशाकरौ। मरुतो मारुतश्चैव सागराः सरितस्तथा ॥१२-३१०-१८॥
ādityāś caiva rudrāś ca divākara-niśākarau। maruto mārutaś caiva sāgarāḥ saritas tathā ॥12-310-18॥

[तस्मिन् (tasmin) - in that; दिव्ये (divye) - divine; वने (vane) - forest; रम्ये (ramye) - beautiful; देवदेवर्षिसङ्कुले (devadevarṣi-saṅkule) - filled with gods and divine sages; आस्थितः (āsthitaḥ) - having undertaken; परमं (paramam) - supreme; योगम् (yogam) - yoga; ऋषिः (ṛṣiḥ) - sage; पुत्रार्थम् (putrārtham) - for the sake of a son; उद्यतः (udyataḥ) - engaged;]
(In that divine, beautiful forest filled with gods and divine sages, the sage, having undertaken supreme yoga, engaged for the sake of a son.)
In that beautiful and divine forest, crowded with gods and divine sages, the sage undertook supreme yoga, intent on obtaining a son. (12-310-21)
न चास्य हीयते वर्णो न ग्लानिरुपजायते। त्रयाणामपि लोकानां तदद्भुतमिवाभवत् ॥१२-३१०-२२॥
na cāsya hīyate varṇo na glānirupajāyate। trayāṇāmapi lokānāṃ tadadbhutamivābhavat ॥12-310-22॥
[न (na) - not; च (ca) - and; अस्य (asya) - of him; हीयते (hīyate) - is diminished; वर्णः (varṇaḥ) - complexion; न (na) - not; ग्लानिः (glāniḥ) - weakness; उपजायते (upajāyate) - arises; त्रयाणाम् (trayāṇām) - of the three; अपि (api) - even; लोकानाम् (lokānām) - of the worlds; तत् (tat) - that; अद्भुतम् (adbhutam) - wonder; इव (iva) - as if; अभवत् (abhavat) - became;]
(Not and of him is diminished complexion, not weakness arises; of the three even worlds that wonder as if became.)
His complexion is not diminished, nor does any weakness arise in him; for all three worlds, that became as if a wonder. (12-310-22)
जटाश्च तेजसा तस्य वैश्वानरशिखोपमाः। प्रज्वलन्त्यः स्म दृश्यन्ते युक्तस्यामिततेजसः ॥१२-३१०-२३॥
jaṭāś ca tejasā tasya vaiśvānarashikhopamāḥ। prajvalantyaḥ sma dṛśyante yuktasyāmitatejasaḥ ॥12-310-23॥
[जटाः (jaṭāḥ) - matted locks; च (ca) - and; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; तस्य (tasya) - his; वैश्वानरशिखोपमाः (vaiśvānarashikhopamāḥ) - like the flames of fire; प्रज्वलन्त्यः (prajvalantyaḥ) - blazing; स्म (sma) - indeed; दृश्यन्ते (dṛśyante) - were seen; युक्तस्य (yuktasya) - of the one endowed; अमिततेजसः (amitatejasaḥ) - of immeasurable brilliance;]
(The matted locks and by brilliance his like the flames of fire blazing indeed were seen of the one endowed with immeasurable brilliance.)
His matted locks, blazing with brilliance, appeared like the flames of fire; they were seen on the one endowed with immeasurable radiance. (12-310-23)
मार्कण्डेयो हि भगवानेतदाख्यातवान्मम। स देवचरितानीह कथयामास मे सदा ॥१२-३१०-२४॥
mārkaṇḍeyo hi bhagavānetadākhyātavān mama। sa devacaritānīha kathayāmāsa me sadā ॥12-310-24॥
[मार्कण्डेयः (mārkaṇḍeyaḥ) - Markandeya; (proper name); हि (hi) - indeed; भगवान् (bhagavān) - the revered one; एतत् (etat) - this; आख्यातवान् (ākhyātavān) - has narrated; मम (mama) - to me; सः (saḥ) - he; देवचरितानि (devacaritāni) - divine deeds; इह (iha) - here; कथयामास (kathayāmāsa) - has recounted; मे (me) - to me; सदा (sadā) - always;]
(Markandeya indeed the revered one this has narrated to me. He divine deeds here has recounted to me always.)
Markandeya, the revered sage, has indeed narrated this to me. He has always recounted the divine deeds here to me. (12-310-24)
ता एताद्यापि कृष्णस्य तपसा तेन दीपिताः। अग्निवर्णा जटास्तात प्रकाशन्ते महात्मनः ॥१२-३१०-२५॥
tā etādyāpi kṛṣṇasya tapasā tena dīpitāḥ। agnivarṇā jaṭāstāta prakāśante mahātmanaḥ ॥12-310-25॥
[ता (tā) - those (feminine plural); एता (etā) - these (feminine plural); अद्यापि (adyāpi) - even today; कृष्णस्य (kṛṣṇasya) - of Kṛṣṇa; तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity; तेन (tena) - by him; दीपिताः (dīpitāḥ) - illuminated; अग्निवर्णा (agnivarṇā) - having the color of fire; जटाः (jaṭāḥ) - matted locks; तात (tāta) - O dear one; प्रकाशन्ते (prakāśante) - shine; महात्मनः (mahātmanaḥ) - of the great-souled one;]
(Those, these even today, of Kṛṣṇa, by austerity, by him, illuminated; having the color of fire, matted locks, O dear one, shine, of the great-souled one.)
O dear one, even today, those matted locks of the great-souled Kṛṣṇa, illuminated by his austerity, shine with the color of fire. (12-310-25)
एवंविधेन तपसा तस्य भक्त्या च भारत। महेश्वरः प्रसन्नात्मा चकार मनसा मतिम् ॥१२-३१०-२६॥
evaṃvidhena tapasā tasya bhaktyā ca bhārata। maheśvaraḥ prasannātmā cakāra manasā matim ॥12-310-26॥
[एवंविधेन (evaṃvidhena) - by such (evaṃ) kind (vidha) means (ena); तपसा (tapasā) - by austerity (tapas); तस्य (tasya) - of him (tasya); भक्त्या (bhaktyā) - by devotion (bhakti); च (ca) - and (ca); भारत (bhārata) - O Bhārata; महेश्वरः (maheśvaraḥ) - the great lord (maheśvara); प्रसन्नात्मा (prasannātmā) - with pleased mind (prasanna-ātmā); चकार (cakāra) - did (cakāra); मनसा (manasā) - with the mind (manasā); मतिम् (matim) - resolve (mati);]
(By such kind of austerity, by his devotion and, O Bhārata, the great lord, with a pleased mind, made a resolve with his mind.)
O Bhārata, by such austerity and his devotion, the great Lord, with a pleased mind, made a resolve in his mind. (12-310-26)
उवाच चैनं भगवांस्त्र्यम्बकः प्रहसन्निव। एवंविधस्ते तनयो द्वैपायन भविष्यति ॥१२-३१०-२७॥
uvāca cainaṁ bhagavāṁstryambakaḥ prahasanniva। evaṁvidhaste tanayo dvaipāyana bhaviṣyati ॥12-310-27॥
[उवाच (uvāca) - said; च (ca) - and; एनम् (enam) - this (person); भगवान् (bhagavān) - the venerable; त्र्यम्बकः (tryambakaḥ) - three-eyed (Śiva); प्रहसन् (prahasan) - smiling; इव (iva) - as if; एवंविधः (evaṁvidhaḥ) - such; ते (te) - your; तनयः (tanayaḥ) - son; द्वैपायन (dvaipāyana) - Dvaipayana (Vyāsa); भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will be;]
(Said and this (person) the venerable three-eyed (Śiva) smiling as if: such your son Dvaipayana will be.)
And the venerable three-eyed Lord (Śiva), as if smiling, said to him: "Such will your son Dvaipayana be." (12-310-27)
यथा ह्यग्निर्यथा वायुर्यथा भूमिर्यथा जलम्। यथा च खं तथा शुद्धो भविष्यति सुतो महान् ॥१२-३१०-२८॥
yathā hy agnir yathā vāyur yathā bhūmir yathā jalam। yathā ca khaṃ tathā śuddho bhaviṣyati suto mahān ॥12-310-28॥
[यथा (yathā) - just as; हि (hi) - indeed; अग्निः (agniḥ) - fire; यथा (yathā) - just as; वायुः (vāyuḥ) - wind; यथा (yathā) - just as; भूमिः (bhūmiḥ) - earth; यथा (yathā) - just as; जलम् (jalam) - water; यथा (yathā) - just as; च (ca) - and; खम् (kham) - space; तथा (tathā) - so; शुद्धः (śuddhaḥ) - pure; भविष्यति (bhaviṣyati) - will become; सुतः (sutaḥ) - son; महान् (mahān) - great;]
(Just as indeed fire, just as wind, just as earth, just as water, just as and space, so pure will become son great.)
Just as fire, wind, earth, water, and space are pure, so too will the great son become pure. (12-310-28)
तद्भावभावी तद्बुद्धिस्तदात्मा तदपाश्रयः। तेजसावृत्य लोकांस्त्रीन्यशः प्राप्स्यति केवलम् ॥१२-३१०-२९॥
tadbhāvabhāvī tadbuddhis tadātmā tadapāśrayaḥ। tejasāvṛtya lokāṃs trīn yaśaḥ prāpsyati kevalam ॥12-310-29॥
[तद्भावभावी (tad-bhāva-bhāvī) - he who becomes the state of that; तद्बुद्धिः (tad-buddhiḥ) - whose intellect is that; तदात्मा (tad-ātmā) - whose self is that; तदपाश्रयः (tad-apāśrayaḥ) - who has that as support; तेजसा (tejasā) - by brilliance; आवृत्य (āvṛtya) - having enveloped; लोकान् (lokān) - worlds; त्रीन् (trīn) - three; यशः (yaśaḥ) - fame; प्राप्स्यति (prāpsyati) - will attain; केवलम् (kevalam) - only;]
(He who becomes the state of that, whose intellect is that, whose self is that, who has that as support, having enveloped the three worlds by brilliance, will attain only fame.)
He who embodies that state, whose intellect, self, and support are all that, enveloping the three worlds with brilliance, will attain only fame. (12-310-29)
